Enjoy!

Fri, 8 Nov 2013 00:31:50 EST Purging and Bite Size Pieces It's incredible how much I have accumulated in 20 years of living in one place, combined with inheriting a bunch of stuff. I have decided that decluttering, purging and cleaning my home is my primary job until November 22. Like losing weight and getting healthy inside, decluttering and purging is a bit overwhelming. I keep reminding myself..."how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time".

One "bite" a... Wed, 6 Nov 2013 09:53:08 EST Trick or Treat 5K - done! I had a spooktacular time this morning racing in a local 5K. A small crowd of 120 dressed in costumes raced through a local park and marsh. It was walking distance from my house. Easy to get to, easy and pretty to run through, and easy to get home. I would definitely do it again. Because the most of the course runs on a trail through the marsh, there are no spectators to cheer you on for miles 2 and 3. So it's just you and the beautiful scenery around you to keep you going.

... Sat, 26 Oct 2013 10:49:05 EST Clearing out the Cobwebs and Clutter (With Halloween around the corner, I guess I've got cobwebs on my mind, thus a little fun with cobwebs in my blog).

I've been fall cleaning my home (like spring cleaning, only because it's fall, I'm calling it fall cleaning). While cleaning, I've noticed how busy the spiders have been, putting up cobwebs in a lot of the corners. The spiders are diligent and persistent. I can learn a lesson from these unwelcome creatures. If I want to achieve a goal, I need to be diligent and... Sat, 26 Oct 2013 01:19:21 EST My Skinny Rule #5 Don't skip breakfast, ever.

Breakfast - it's the meal where you break the fast of not eating since the day before. It's the meal that provides the energy needed for the day ahead. Start the day by giving your body foods that provide energy and nutrients. Eating breakfast helps jumpstart your metabolism, which is at its lowest after sleeping, and this meal provides food that will be used for energy as you go about your daily routine.

Studies show that people who ate the... When you're out to lunch or dinner and they offer you that fabulous dessert, just tell yourself that you'll eat it tomorrow and skip it today. In the late night when I'm tempted to start grazing, I tell myself that I'll e... Are you wondering how much water a day you should drink? Experts differ in their advice: 8 or 10 or 20 glasses per day, even up to one gallon a day are amounts I have seen suggested as the amount necessary to be adequa... Learn what a serving actually should look like. Yes, it takes a little time, but isn’t your health worth it? Use a measuring cup or a food scale, if you have one, try to measure your food for a week. You may be surprised at how many extra calories you are ... Sat, 7 Sep 2013 14:18:38 EST My "Skinny Rules" We are bombarded every day with advice on how to lose weight, get the body we always wanted, what food to eat, what food to avoid, etc., etc. etc. It gets overwhelming and hard to figure out what is good advice and what is bad advice. What works for one person might not work for someone else. Yet, there has to be some standard pieces of advice that are universal for anyone wanting to get healty and fit. I've been pondering this for several months, as I read through the daily Spark article... My husband keeps a coffee can on his dresser in our bedroom and we both throw our loose change in the coffee can. Last week, I decided to take the now-full can of money to the bank. Normally, I deposit the money in our checking account. But on that day, I decided to keep the money and stash it to be used later. I remember thinking “I’ll save it for a rainy day”.

Today, it rained 6 inches in about 5 hours. In the midst of the storm and unbeknownst to me, our valiant, trusty, old su... Wed, 26 Jun 2013 14:06:13 EST Triathlon update What fun! I participated in my first triathlon. This triathlon is unique for
a couple reasons. First, it's a non-intimidating event. There are no timers or
chips to wear. Completion, not competition is the goal. It's social and
cooperative. Second, instead of swimming, you kayak 1.5 miles on a lake.
Third, it's only for women and is limited to 150 women. Small but really fun.
Finally, the racers are divided into 6 flights of 25 women. Three flights e... This is a great way to set goals, so here's my stab at setting a SMART goal for the next 12 weeks.

Specific: Lose 10 pounds by August 28.

Measurable: Weigh in weekly and record my weight weekly.

Attainable: I will reach this goal by tracking my daily food intake, eating clean, working out 4-5 days/week, drinking 8 gl... Sat, 8 Jun 2013 12:40:16 EST Celebrating small changes! I am so stoked right now! I went dress shopping for a dress to wear at a wedding next weekend. I haven't purchased a new dress since 2010. When you're overweight, shopping can be a discouraging endeavor because clothes don't fit well. I looked online at a store that I like, found a dress online that I liked (at least on the model), checked online to see if my local store had it in stock in my size. I've been a size 18 for a long time, but since I've lost 17 pounds, I checked to see if t... Fri, 7 Jun 2013 17:44:38 EST Triathlon coming up in less than a week! I can't believe my triathlon is just around the corner in 6 days. This triathlon is advertised as a nonintimidating tri with only 150 women. We are broken down into 6 flights of 25 women each, with 3 of the flights starting one of the 3 race components at 8 am and 3 more flights starting at 8:15, so hopefully, it won't feel crowded . The components are 13 mile bike ride, 5K run/walk and a 1 mile kayak. I was hoping to be better prepared than I am, but at least I've been working out fai... Wed, 5 Jun 2013 01:17:20 EST Boot Camp - Big Thumbs Up I love the boot camp that I found in a town near me. I signed up for 6 weeks and am starting week 5. It has been exactly what I needed to help me gain strength, lose weight, lose inches. I will be so sad when the 6 weeks ends. I won't be continuing with it because it takes me between 1 1/2 hours and 2 hours to drive there and back. That's 2 hours of driving for 1 hour of hard work, but such good hard work. My gas budget has gone through the roof in the past four weeks. I can't afford t... Mon, 27 May 2013 22:35:10 EST Less is More Last night at dinner, my husband said, "I've noticed you're not cheating on your food...... I mean, you're really watching what you eat".

He laughed at my reply, "If I cheat on my food, I'll lose all that I've gained".

"Aren't you saying that backwards?", he asked.

"No, as I lose weight, I'm gaining in so many ways: my clothes fit better, my health is improving, I feel better, I'm giving myself longevity. It takes so long to drop the weight and only m... Fri, 10 May 2013 11:23:36 EST Boot Camp, First Triathlon, and May Motto I started a 6 week boot camp last Monday. With one week under my belt, it's been a good change for me. Each workout is about 45 minutes to an hour long. The instructors change the workout every day, utilizing a combination of cardio and strength exercises. They check your form to make sure you're doing it right, modify the exercise if it's too easy or too hard, and just keep you going. They're good about stretching and cooling down, too. While I'm doing the boot camp, it's hard and my mu... Sat, 4 May 2013 23:53:25 EST Last post on the 90 day challenge I didn't win the 3 free months membership, but I lost 10 pounds. That's still a win in my book. In my heart, I wished that I could have killed this challenge, but the reality of it is that the weight just doesn't come off quickly for me. In talking with other members of my health club, we all agreed that this challenge was generally not a positive experience because it wasn't a realistic challenge. Only one person in the entire club accomplished the goal set for them. The club "threw dow... Fri, 3 May 2013 17:10:17 EST Week 10-90 Day Challenge What a week! I was horrified to see what happened at the Boston Marathon and all the ensuing news. I was grateful to see the suspects had been caught, but still so saddened for all those whose lives were changed forever by the actions of the bombers.

I went out to dinner on Monday with my husband. I was served two stuffed peppers, ate one and took the other home and ate it Tuesday lunch. Within an hour after lunch, I was sick with food poisoning. I spent the rest of the week... Sat, 20 Apr 2013 15:49:16 EST Week 9 - 90 Day Challenge I knew at the beginning of the challenge that it would be a miracle to achieve the goals set for me by my fitness center. Most of the fitness center members that I know started the challenge on January 1 and I didn't start until February 1. I have not heard of ONE PERSON achieving the goals set for them by the fitness center. It might have been nice for the fitness center to have offered practical ways to work toward the goals, like establishing a strategy for success. Most of my fitne... Thu, 11 Apr 2013 22:35:58 EST Week 5 - 90 Day challenge I haven't been able to maintain a consistent exercise routine for the last couple weeks and it's showing in the scale. Achieving this 90 day challenge is quickly becoming an impossible dream. I have lost only 7 pounds in 5 weeks, leaving 20 pounds to go in the remaining 7 weeks. I'm not throwing in the towel and am reminding myself that 7 pounds lost is still better than no pounds lost. I'm moving in the right direction with my weight loss and am still benefiting myself physically by ... Sun, 10 Mar 2013 21:13:04 EST Highs and lows of Week 3 & 4 of my 90 day challenge I’ve had some highs and some lows in these last two weeks.

Workout highs and lows: Week 3 and 4 saw me on the road, traveling to Denver. Every time I’m in Denver, I go to Washington Park. Washington Park is a wonderful park in the city that has great paths for walking, running, biking around two small lakes. I’ve walked around Wash Park on many previous visits, but this visit was my first time to try any jogging, and the path had snow on it in a few shady spots. I was on the l... Sun, 3 Mar 2013 23:24:49 EST Week 2 of the 90 day challenge Whew! It's been a difficult week to stay on track. I think I set too many goals on SparkPeople, so I'm going to winnow back to what is most important to me in my health and fitness journey. I'm dropping the 28 day boot camp. I'm finding I get the training I need from stuff I already know, from my old fitness log, and from a couple fitness workouts through my cable on demand.

I am participating in two 5K training programs....that's probably one too many. I am practicing this... Sat, 16 Feb 2013 02:20:00 EST Tracking my food I really see the value of tracking my food. It's amazing how it adds up. A nibble here, a nibble there and all of a sudden, I have eaten 300 extra calories. By food tracking, I can more easily determine if I'm really making good choices with my food. I've also discovered that because I'm tracking my food, there are foods I've chosen not to eat because I didn't want to have to write it down, which ultimately saved me a few calories. Looking at the past week, I can see that I need to eat ... Fri, 8 Feb 2013 09:56:59 EST 90 Day Challenge: Drop my body fat 7% points or lose 28 pounds My local health club has thrown down the gauntlet with a 90 day challenge, beginning Feb. 1: Lose 28 pounds or drop my body fat 7% points within 90 days and I will receive 3 months free club membership. When I joined SP in January, I set 35 pounds as my 2013 weight loss goal. My health club's challenge looks really difficult to achieve, but I have nothing to lose in trying my health club's challenge but the weight, so I'm going for the Challenge. I feel like I'm going into my own personal B... Fri, 1 Feb 2013 00:09:08 EST Frozen Zucchini Adventure Yesterday was the third annual Frozen Zucchini 5K Snowshoe Race/Adventure. We didn't have enough snow, so it became a foot race. Our area was under a sleet/ice advisory, so I was praying that the rain/ice would hold off until the race was completed. I'm happy to say it was a good start for me for 2013. My goal was to finish in under 45 minutes, and I did by a couple minutes! I met another woman at the start line who had the same plan as me: walk some, jog some, walk some, jog some. So ... Mon, 28 Jan 2013 13:30:48 EST First 5K of 2013....brrrr! Tomorrow will be my first official 5K of 2013. It was supposed to be a snowshoe race/adventure, but we don't have enough snow, so it's a regular 5K race, in 20 degree weather. This is the third annual Frozen Zucchini Snowshoe 5K race/adventure. Adventure describes me perfectly here. I snowshoed the first year, which was my first time ever on snowshoes. They were really fun and a really good leg workout. It was amazing to see people running on the snowshoes and some of the race times w... Sat, 26 Jan 2013 16:22:59 EST Bonus Received on my Hike this week I went hiking with some friends this week. Normally, we are walking through several inches of snow, but there was only a thin hard icy layer of snow on this week's hike. We hiked through several canyons created by long-ago glaciers, walked along several creeks and rivers, and climbed a few bluffs. One big bonus on this particular hike: All the eagles, young and old that we saw as we hiked. They are majestic birds and it was so cool just to simply watch them ride the thermals and then di... Sat, 19 Jan 2013 22:45:13 EST Goals for 2013 Goal setting has never been my strong suit. I usually make my goals too big and subsequently, set myself for failure. So I'm keeping my goals short, and hopefully, attainable.

1. Lose 35 pounds. That's less than one pound a week for the year. If I can lose 35 pounds, I'll be at my normal complaining weight, and then I will set a new weight loss goal. This SparksPage is where I hope to set smaller, attainable goals that will help me achieve this goal.
2 Memorize on... Fri, 11 Jan 2013 16:08:13 EST
