FISEFTON's SparkPeople Blog FISEFTON's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Why does it seem harder at Christmas? I am now on day 2 of my Baby Steps Challenge and, to be honest, it isn't really that hard. Then again, it shouldn't be, should it? I have been on this track for a very long time, over 25 years in it shouldn't be hard. Sure, there are times when I go off track and eat what I want and don't do much exercise - holidays to Disney spring to mind - but most of the time I keep myself eating healthily and getting my exercise in. Why then, does everything seem so much harder in the run-up ... Tue, 2 Jan 2018 12:01:28 EST Starting 2018 With a Baby Steps Challenge As usual, I am ending the year more or less the same weight as I started it. As I am at goal, most of the time, and my weight is within the 5lb allowance that weight watchers gives me, I'm OK. However, I am very close to the limit of that 5lb so I need to get back down to my goal weight so I have a little bit to play with when I need it. So, with that in mind, I am going to do what I call a "Baby Steps Challenge" to start off 2018.

My Baby Steps Challenge, does exactly what it ... Sun, 31 Dec 2017 09:24:02 EST Week 1 Complete Last week I decided that it was time to get myself back in gear and shift the 5lbs which I have put on over the last 6 months or so and get out of my "I don't give a sh*t" funk.

Week 1 is now complete and I have to say that I am happy with my progress. I have had a huge weight loss this week, 3 lbs loss when I weighed in at Weight Watchers yesterday and that is the weight which is recorded on here. However, my weight loss from last Friday morning to this morning is a whopping 4... Fri, 7 Jul 2017 12:49:22 EST Spark Streaks One of the things l like about SparkPeople is having somewhere to keep track of my goals and streaks. I especially like the ones which are tracked for me, eg fitness minutes. This is especially easy to track now that I can sync my Google Fit account to my fitness tracker. All I have to do now is remember to carry my phone so that I actually track my steps! I used to have a Fitbit and synced that too.

I've been tracking my fitness on and off since I joined SP in June 2008. I've... Wed, 5 Jul 2017 14:48:17 EST Small Goals Commitment Challenge: Activity #1 Yesterday I joined the Small Goals Commitment Challenge team and today I looked at the link to Activity 1: Why do you want to be fit and healthy?

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=6354497

This is actually a really hard question for me. I mean, I've always considered myself healthy, I just feel better in myself when I am at a certain weight and level of fitness. However, after reading the post and thinking about it a bit more I ... Mon, 3 Jul 2017 14:48:29 EST Small Goals Commitment Challenge I haven't written a blog in over 3 and a half years but as I have just joined the Small Goals Commitment Challenge team I thought it would be a good time to start again.

Why did I join the team and the challenge? Because I have been in a very big slump for the past 6 or 7 months. I've just about managed to keep up my fitness (just running) but have hit a plateau with that. My weight has gone up 5 or 6 lbs and, fortunately, stuck but I know it could easily spiral out of control i... Sun, 2 Jul 2017 13:08:17 EST 2013: A Year of PBs 364 365 331 237
In my last blog I said that 2013 was a good year for weight loss and, more importantly, keeping almost all of the weight off. In this blog I'm going to look at my running and swimming.

Every year I enter a 5K run, a 10K run and the Swimathon (a 5,000m swim). 2013 was no different I entered all of those plus an extra 10K run and I started taking part in parkrun on a regular basis. For those who don't know, parkr... Wed, 1 Jan 2014 11:29:18 EST 2013: A good year From a weight loss/healthy living perspective, I had a wonderful year. Usually I start the year at around 152/153 lbs and finish maybe 1 or 2 lbs lighter. I'll have lost around 5 or 6 lbs during the year but they will have all gone back on in December.

This year is different. This year, I went back to Weight Watchers in October, having already lost about 7 lbs, and lost 3 lbs before all the parties etc started in December. I then put it all back on at my last weigh in at WW 2... Tue, 31 Dec 2013 04:34:00 EST Planning and Preparation 521 306 381
I can't believe that I haven't written on my SP blog for nearly a year. Well, actually I can. I have a personal blog on WordPress which I tend to use as it is mine and I don't have to abide by SparkPeople's T's & C's for it.

Anyway, it is that time of year when we start thinking about starting again after, in my case, giving ourselves permission to lapse a little over the Christmas period. Usually, I wait until 2 January to s... Sun, 29 Dec 2013 09:31:58 EST Here we go again! Here we are at the beginning of another year and here I am setting more goals which I may or may not achieve this year. I hope I have made them a SMART (specific, measureable, achievable, realistic and timed) and that I will actually stick to them for longer this year.

I have blogged about them on my personal blog

iting-challenge-new-years-resolutions-
doompocalypse-redux/

My goal for January is to slowly incr... Tue, 1 Jan 2013 07:44:51 EST Trip to Disneyland Paris This is a follow-up to my "I'm so excited.." thread on the Disney Lovers Around the World team. If you read that thread you will know that my husband and I planned a surprise trip to Disneyland Paris for my son's 18th birthday. Here is a quick run-down of what happened:

First, just a bit of background. My son has a learning disability so, even though he is 18, his development is around that of a 6-7 year old. Keeping this a secret from him was really hard and I nearly slipped ... Sun, 18 Nov 2012 05:26:37 EST September 30 Day Blog Challenge - Days 19 & 20 Oops! I slipped up and missed yesterday so I'm making it up today.

19. What 'unhealthy' food(s)/drink(s) do you refuse to give up? Any that you have given up completely?

I don't think I've given up any foods completely and I downright flat refuse to give up chocolate and diet coke. I don't drink tea or coffee, I don't drink alcohol and I don't smoke so chocolate and diet coke is my smoking and drinking.

We still have a takeaway at least once a month, either... Thu, 20 Sep 2012 09:14:29 EST September 30 Day Blog Challenge - Day 18 Day 18. Do you have a go-to meal for days when you have to be on the go, no time to stop to eat and no refrigeration/cooler available?

Thankfully, days where I am on the go and can't eat at home or at work are very few and far between. Unfortunately, these days they tend to sneak up on me so I can't prepare for them. However, I always have a cereal bar in my bag "just in case". If I know that we are going to be out and about I'll use a small lunchbox size coolbag and pack some ... Tue, 18 Sep 2012 10:55:28 EST September 30 Day Blog Challenge - Day 17 17. Do you have any meals/snacks that you repeat over and over? What are they?

I tend to repeat my breakfasts and lunches quite a lot.

Breakfast tends to be either porridge with a cereal topper like cinnamon apple and raisins or poached egg on toast.

If I'm at work, I'll take my own lunch and usually have either pitta bread with ham or tuna, lettuce and grated cheese or a ham and cheese spread roll. The pitta bread and roll are always wholemeal. I'll also ... Mon, 17 Sep 2012 13:06:41 EST September 30 Day Blog Challenge - Day 16 16. Do you follow an eating 'plan'? (Vegetarian, paleo, South Beach, Atkins, yada yada yada) How has this helped you live a healthier life?

I don't follow an eating plan as such. When I was young my mum was always on a diet so we never had anything high in fat or sugar in the house. That isn't to say that we never had sweets, chocolate or cake but it was rare for them to be in the house and when we had cakes or biscuits they were nearly always homemade. I took those low-fat and ... Sun, 16 Sep 2012 12:06:37 EST September 30 Day Blog Challenge - Days 14 & 15 This is it, after this blog I will finally have caught up with all of the questions. Yay!

14. What life style changes have been easier than you expected? Why do you think that was?

During term time I find it easier to stay on track for both nutrition and exercise. I think, no, I know, that is because we have a routine during term time. My son leaves home just before 8am on the school bus and I don't have to be at work until 10am so I have time to go to the gym and ei... Sat, 15 Sep 2012 12:11:49 EST September 30 Day Blog Challenge - Days 12 & 13 I'm catching up slowly, today is days 12 and 13 and tomorrow, I hope, will be 14 and 15 and I'll be all caught up :o)

12. Post a picture of your inspiration. Thinspiration if that's your thing. Fitspiration if that's what you're after. Heathspiration if that's your primary goal. He has an undiagnosed disability - learning and physical, although you can't really tell the physical so much any more - and I nee... Fri, 14 Sep 2012 11:27:47 EST September 30 Day Blog Challenge - Days 10 & 11 10. Why are you working towards the goal you talked about on Day 1? Particular health goal? Size goal? Activity goal? Vanity goal?

My goal for September was to lose 3lbs of the 5lbs which I want to lose before we go away from my son's 18th birthday at the end of October. I also wanted to re-join the gym to get back into the swing of exercising regularly.

I am currently within the normal BMI range for my height but at the very top of the normal range so I want to lose we... Thu, 13 Sep 2012 05:54:15 EST September 30 Day Blog Challenge - Days 7 to 9 7. How do you measure progress towards or maintenance? Scale weight? Body fat percentage? How your clothes fit? Other?

My first port of call for measuring progress is, always has been and always will be the scale. I know that I feel better when the scale is below 150lbs and I feel wonderful when it is under 145lbs. However, I also use my measurements as they give me a boost when I have started a new exercise programme and know that I am building more muscle and losing fat. I do... Wed, 12 Sep 2012 12:16:21 EST September 30 Day Blog Challenge - Days 4 to 6 Day 4. What are (or were) your fears about weight loss?

I've never really had any fears about weight loss and I still don't. I have never selected a goal which is too low for my height. Even at my lowest weight I was still well within the healthy BMI range and a size 10 to 12 (UK). My main fear is putting on weight because I feel really sluggish and unhealthy when my weight creeps up to towards the 11 stone (154 lb) mark. Saying that, I am a healthy BMI even at 11 stone but on... Tue, 11 Sep 2012 04:42:44 EST September 30 Day Blogging Challenge I haven't blogged on SP for ages as I usually prefer to use my personal WordPress blog so I can keep ownership of my words but the 30 Day Blogging Challenge set by TanyaP71 seemed like a good way to get back into blogging on SP. Sun, 4 Mar 2012 07:23:33 EST October 2011 - Week 1 completed I did it, I completed my first week's goal and actually did a minimum of 10 minutes exercise every day. I also lost 4lb which I would like to say was due to being really good but it wasn't really because I did a 2 day detox on Wednesday and Thursday which involved not eating much and drinking loads of water.

I am now keeping my husband company on a SlimFast type diet for 7 days as he is off to work overseas again at the end of next week and wanted to try to lose a few lbs before... Sun, 9 Oct 2011 08:22:23 EST Here we go again... Here we are again, at the beginning of another month and here I am having to start again after a break away from logging for about 8 weeks! I haven't been bad, in fact my weight went down to 10st 8.5lb at the end of August before I went on holiday. Unfortunately, my measurements didn't go down as the only exercise I'd done since the Run for All on 31 July was walking every day.

So, here I am now trying to get myself back on track and ready for the gluttony that Christmas will bri... Sat, 1 Oct 2011 07:11:39 EST Run for All 10K (with pictures) It was a lovely day today but I wish it had stayed overcast for a little bit this morning like it did yesterday. I know, we're never happy with the weather in the UK, are we? On any other day, I'd love the warm, sunny start we had to the day today but not when I had to run 10k through the streets of York.

My husband and son went with me this morning to meet a friend on the way up to the Knavesmire (York Racecourse). We got to the Knavesmire with 10 minutes to spare for me. I ha... Sun, 31 Jul 2011 12:30:22 EST Best laid plans... I had a plan for today. It was a busy day so I needed a plan to get through it. The plan was something like this:

7am - get up, get the boy up, get dressed and downstairs to make breakfast and lunches before 7.15am
7.15am - make breakfast and lunches and be ready to sit down eating breakfast by 7.30am
7.45am - get the boy back upstairs to clean teeth etc and ready for the school bus which is due at 7.55am
8am - go out for my 10k training (only a 30 minute interval ... Fri, 8 Jul 2011 12:40:12 EST Run for All Training - Week 3, Day 2 I haven't blogged on SP for weeks but thought that maybe I should. I've been blogging quite a bit on my personal and business blogs but neglecting this one. I don't know what my previous "longest streak" was.

I am now wondering how long I... Sun, 15 May 2011 06:56:50 EST Better late than never - Monthly Update April 2011 was a lovely sunny month but I really didn't do well on my weight loss/healthy living journey. After a great January, February and March I let things slide. I know why and I will explain my reasons, they are not excuses, and I take full responsibility for putting on weight in April rather than losing it. I am writing it down for all the world to read so that I am accountable for my actions.

So, April, we had school holidays - I'm always worse in school holidays than duri... Thu, 5 May 2011 11:39:50 EST April Monthly Update I didn't lose my 1lb goal for this month but I did lose some and I am still under 11 stone with a normal BMI. I also lost inches! 334

Here's how I did (weight/measurements as at 1 April 2011):

Weight: 151.75 (0.75 in March for a total of 4.25lb lost this year)
Chest: 36.5" (down 0.75" in March but still more than 1/1/11)
Waist: 29.5" (down 0.25" so back to the same as 1/1/11)
Belly: 36.75" (down 0.5" in March and down 2" since 1/1/11)
Hips... I guess it isn't too bad as I wrote my last blog last Friday so this is like a weekly up date.

I haven't done too badly although I haven't logged my food every day, I have drunk 8+ cups of water every day, I missed my freggie goal on 1 day and I have met my goal of 300... Fri, 18 Mar 2011 14:57:40 EST Lent Challenge - Days 1 and 2 I know that it is only 2 days in but I don't think I've done too badly so far. I have logged both days (even though I went under range on day 1 and over range on day 2) but that's OK, my goal was to log every day. I've also done lots of walking which is just as well as getting "formal" exercise sessions in is very hit and miss this week (and will be next week too) as my son is doing work experience meaning that I have to drop him off at 9.30am and pick him up at 2.30pm. This means that I h... Fri, 11 Mar 2011 12:40:35 EST Monthly Update - Stats 334 9 252 244 248
I am giving myself a big pat on the back this month as I exceeded my weight loss goal of 1lb for the month. I know it isn't a huge goal but for someone who has been trying to lose the last, stubborn 10-14 post-baby lbs for the last 16 years it is a realistic goal for me. My goal back in January was to reach 147lbs by the end of August in time for my 40th birthday trip to Disney in September.

Here's how I've... Thu, 10 Mar 2011 11:30:58 EST End of January 2011 Challenge Aargh! So much for blogging regularly. I started off well enough but then "life" got in the way and I decided not to make time for it.

Anyway, the January 2011 Challenge has now finished and I did OK for the first 3 1/2 weeks and then fell off track for the second half of last week. Fortunately, I managed to get under 11 stone last week and then maintained it this week. So, my weigh-in at the end of the January challenge is 153.75lbs - a loss of 2.75lbs! Considering my aim i... Mon, 31 Jan 2011 13:28:24 EST Week 2 - the weekend! I was doing so well last week for week 2 and then the weekend happened! I didn't log my food and, although I did do some exercise, I didn't do much. I was working my normal Saturday afternoon shift and then switched shifts on Sunday and was working 6.30am to 12.30pm. I eat a lot when I am working at the weekend, I know this, but I think I either ate more than usual this weekend or all the exercise I did in the week was too much for the amount of food I ate. I haven't totalled up the exerc... Mon, 17 Jan 2011 07:28:35 EST Week 2, Days 3 and 4 Wednesday and Thursday were good this week. I exercised both days and logged all my food. Stats for the two days are as follows:

Wed (day 3)
Nutrition: Logged all food, in range for all main nutrients :D
Water: 9 cups
Freggies: 3 servings
Exercise: 60 min treadmill (7.08km), 41 min walk (3.56km), ST training (1 set of 5 exercises)
Steps: 7,709 (not including treadmill)

Thur (day 4)
Nutrition: Logged all food, only in range for fat, below... Fri, 14 Jan 2011 10:46:55 EST Week 2, Day 2 Another good, hectic day yesterday. I had a workshop at HMRC (Inland Revenue) about business expenses and capital allowances in the morning, followed by blood donation in the early afternoon and finally opticians appointments for Adam and myself after school.

The workshop was good and, although I am a bookkeeper and have been doing my husband's books and tax return for 18+ years I learned stuff that I didn't know or knew the theory for but didn't understand (like depreciation). I... Wed, 12 Jan 2011 12:13:14 EST Week 2, Day 1 Here we go with week 2. Day 1 was OK as I actually managed to stay in range for all of my nutrition even though that isn't a goal for me this week.

I went to the gym in the afternoon yesterday as I had a workshop at HMRC (Inland Revenue) about tax and record keeping in the morning. The workshop was good and I actually learned something even though I have been doing my husband's books and tax returns for the past 18 years! Anyway, I could have just written yesterday off as a rest... Tue, 11 Jan 2011 15:01:41 EST Week 1, Day 7 Good day yesterday although I did go over my calorie range by about 100 calories. I wasn't worried about that though as I had done so much exercise during the week I knew I would still lose weight anyway. Here are my stats for yesterday:

Nutrition: Logged and in range for carbs, protein and fat
Exercise: 31 minute walk, 2.83km
Steps: 6,457
Water: 8 cups
Freggies: 3 servings

Weigh in this morning: 11 st 1lbs (1.5lb loss)
Mon, 10 Jan 2011 13:35:41 EST Week1, Days 3 to 6 OK, as promised, here is my update for the week so far.

I have logged every day and although I may not have been in range for all the major nutrients every day I have managed to get pretty close most days.

I have drunk 8 cups of water EVERY day this week and today (day 7) will be no exception. I am not doing so well on the freggies front though with only 2 servings for the past couple of days and averaging 3 servings for the week.

Exercise has gone well this ... Sun, 9 Jan 2011 11:22:26 EST Week 1 update I haven't had much time to get on the computer over the past couple of days and will have even less today so this is a "holding" blog to say that I haven't forgotten and I have been logging and exercising. I'll do a full blog tomorrow, I hope as next week is looking hectic until Thursday so I may not get another chance. Sat, 8 Jan 2011 05:38:13 EST Week 1, Day 2 Yesterday went well. I was hoping to go back to the gym but didn't get there. Instead of deciding not to do any exercise at all I did the cardio section of my Biggest Loser DVD and the toning workout for the Bootcamp day 3.

Results for day 2 are as follows:

Exercise: 30 minutes cardio
Bootcamp Day 3 toning workout

Steps: 4,621

Nutrition: in range for carbs, protein, carbs and fat
Water: 8 cups
Freggies: 4 Wed, 5 Jan 2011 12:35:34 EST Week 1, Day 1 15 249 411
Yesterday didn't go too badly. I logged all of my food even though I knew I'd be over the calories as we ate dinner in town and I had gammon, chips and peas. We did walk to town and back though so that was a fair chunk of exercise. I also did Day 2 of the 28 Day Bootcamp workout.

Results for day 1 are as follows:

Exercise: 70 minutes walking - 6.46km
Bootcamp Day 2 toning workout

Steps: 11,684

... Tue, 4 Jan 2011 11:43:46 EST New Year Challenge - 2011 Here we go again with a new challenge for the New Year. I have set up this challenge on the teams which I am leader or co-leader of and thought I would share it with you. Yes, traditionally 1 January is the day to make, and in my case, break resolutions for the coming year so I haven't actually made resolutions as such for years.
