I haven’t been getting enough sleep lately and I can feel it in my legs. They were tired before I even started this morning. Darn NCAA Football Bowl Games. So 20 or 21 miles will be it for today. Tonight I will be going to bed earlier, period.
Thu, 3 Jan 2013 13:01:55 EST 2013 day two http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5186686 The rain was supposed to have moved out of the area by morning, but that wasn’t the case. There was a steady drizzle for most of the ride to work, so the glasses came off in short order. It really wasn’t that bad though. Traffic wasn’t bad. There were some cars pulling into the Thomas Nelson Community College parking lot. Time for the Spring semester to begin. My thoughts drifted to the students entering their second sophomore semester. What are their plans? Who is graduating and head... Wed, 2 Jan 2013 17:54:00 EST First ride of the year. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5184882 I finished the year 2012 with 6115 miles. I managed to log the third place distance in our local ride club, Peninsula Bicycling Association (PBA). Now I look forward to 2013. Today a front was moving through which brought rain to the area. The idea was to get up and ride this morning before the front came through. When I awoke at 8 AM, I could hear that the rain had beaten me to the punch. At around noon the rain let up and so I headed out to meet for a club ride. The PBA had a ride sc... Tue, 1 Jan 2013 21:36:14 EST Still ahead http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5177996 Pulling away slowly. I am now 62 miles ahead. There are only a couple of days left for riding. A normal commute on Friday and a 50 on Saturday should do it. Thu, 27 Dec 2012 18:08:36 EST Pulling, for now http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5174826 At the beginning of this month I was 377 miles behind a club mate of mine. I was in fourth place and she was in third. Well, I have taken the lead as of today. I now have 6020 miles for the year and I am in third place by twelve miles. No time to slack off though. Jennifer can is a strong rider and won't take this lying down. The next week should be fun. Sun, 23 Dec 2012 23:51:13 EST The chase is on http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5165371 The end of the year is quickly approaching. It appears as though I will have attained most of the riding goals I have set for myself. One that I didn't get was three centuries for the year. I only rode one. That will be something to work on for next year. I did manage to get 4 metric centuries and 13 half centuries so far. I am happy with that. I have 5800 miles for the year, so the goal of 6000 is in my sights.

The challenge before me now is an attempt to catch a team mate ... Thu, 13 Dec 2012 11:00:27 EST Weather! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5154812 Today it was almost 60 degrees out on the morning commute. By the time lunch rolled around, it was 70 and I got in a nice lunchtime ride. The afternoon commute is looking to be around 70 as well. Loving it! Tomorrow it is supposed to be even nicer! Mon, 3 Dec 2012 13:51:40 EST Weighing in http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5125078 I have been doing well with the exercising portion of my weight loss strategy. I have not been doing well in maintaining control in the eating department. I dropped down to 271 by the end of April and as of this morning I am back up to 302. It didn't all come back on right away. Bit by bit, actually bite by bite, I have managed to erase most of the losses from earlier this year.

Time to refocus. Next year I will turn 50, and I have a few big rides I really want to do. Virgi... Mon, 5 Nov 2012 15:32:34 EST Getting cooler http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5121219 This morning when I check the weather, I found that it was 39 degrees. I knew I was still going to ride in, but for a moment I was questioning my own sanity. It was brisk out, but oh so beautiful. What a great morning to be alive and what a great way to enjoy it.

Last winter was my first commuting winter. It was pretty mild by our standards. I only had to wear the balaclava a couple of times. I think this winter will be a bit more challenging. I say that with a smile on my f... Fri, 2 Nov 2012 08:53:45 EST Sandy has passed http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5119025 This morning was the first ride since Friday. Saturday morning was spent preparing for Hurricane Sandy. Patching the garage roof, putting up all of the lawn furniture, cleaning gutters, and taking down our wind chimes. The rain had already showed up by the time I was done at 4:30 PM. The rest of Saturday, Sunday, and Monday was spent hunkered down in the house. There was plenty of wind and rain, but we fared ok. My heart goes out the the folks up north. It is going to take a long time ... Wed, 31 Oct 2012 11:35:39 EST Shorter Days http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5105076 Well, the days are getting shorter. I knew this was coming. Sunrise gets later each day by about a minute and the reverse is true in the evenings. I have been using the lights each morning during the commute. (head light, two taillights, and wheel lights for the front wheel) The afternoon commute has been light free until yesterday. Yesterday I had to work late. By the time I left, it was 6PM and rain clouds were rolling in. I kicked the lights on, except for the wheel lights, and rod... Fri, 19 Oct 2012 14:34:55 EST Goals met and passed, and not http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5098149 Today I passed my total bike mileage from last year. Last year I finished with 4802 and I hit 4823 for the year. 6000 is the total goal for this year and it's looking good to hit that mark.

My Spark America Fitness minutes yearly goal was 22,258. Today I hit 22,315 for the year.

I set two other riding goals for this year. I wanted three centuries and 12 half centuries on the bike. I have 14 half centuries, but only one century so far. I think I need to roll out on ... Sat, 13 Oct 2012 23:38:32 EST Summer goal http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4998448 Well, I fell short on mileage for the month of July. The goal was 660 and ended up with 610. August is another month and another chance to make the goal. Thu, 2 Aug 2012 18:40:53 EST Racing the storm http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4985189 Raced another storm home today. It was pretty much a tie. Temp of 91 and a heat index of 100 and then the wind temp drops to about 65. The best part about the approaching storm was the crazy tail wind as I got closer to home. What a rush. Tue, 24 Jul 2012 17:50:59 EST New personal best http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4981176 I got to ride with my team today(Saturday). A couple of them have trying to get me to ride on the Dismal Swamp Trail for some time, and I finally made it down there. The Dismal Swamp Trail is a section of the old US highway 17 that connects Southeast Virginia with North Carolina. It is a two lane highway that is 8.5 miles long with a turn around at the end. All that room to ride with no cars to deal with! Woot Woot!! Four of us took off at about 8 AM. We kept a 18 mph pace for the ent... Sun, 22 Jul 2012 00:22:59 EST Thursday's intervals done on Friday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4957673 I missed my ride yesterday. I had the air conditioning repair man coming to the house and had to take the car to work so I could get home quickly. They would call me at work a half an hour before they came. That really beats waiting at the house all day. Well, the AC is working well now that it has the correct coolant level. Oh yeah!

Yesterday’s intervals became today’s intervals. I rode 4 intervals of 5 minutes each, with 4-5 minutes rest between the intervals (RBI). Eac... Fri, 6 Jul 2012 09:13:12 EST late night internet http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4955634 Stayed up way to late last night watching Trans-Siberian Orchestra videos on you tube. Slept in until 9AM. Got up, made a pot of coffee and had breakfast with my wife. I caught the last hour and a half of the fourth stage of the Tour de France. So, I didn't get out for a ride today until about 12:30. I would normally have preferred to be on the road at 6 AM, but you do what you got to do. 50.52 miles this afternoon during the heat of the day. I stopped by the building I work at to refi... Wed, 4 Jul 2012 21:48:45 EST Gotta get faster. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4953534 I started my 15 week interval program today. I got started this morning later than I wanted to. The idea was to get 15-16 miles in the neighborhood before heading out on the commute. Instead of rolling out at 5:30, I didn't get going until 6:00. So I did one interval in the neighborhood, and the other two on the commute. My cruising pace was 15 mph when I started this program in January. My cruising pace is now 16 mph and my interval paces will need to increase accordingly. Today was 3... Tue, 3 Jul 2012 12:44:10 EST Getting back to serious http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4951945 This morning was very comfortable even though the humidity was rather high. It was nice to be able to get on the road again. My commuting was put on hold for two weeks while I recovered from poison ivy. I was able to get one evening and one early morning ride in during that time, but that was all. It’s good to be back. Oh yeah, I got to see a White Tail doe this morning. I tried to maintain a steady pace and not spook her. However, when I got about 100 feet from her she headed for the ... Mon, 2 Jul 2012 12:50:17 EST Finally riding again http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4939503 Well, first long ride in two weeks. I got into some pretty fierce poison ivy on the tenth. Three trips to the doctor and a ton of prescription steriods, and the body is responding nicely. I have had one early morning and one late evening ride during the last two weeks. I had to avoid the sun since the arms are still chewed up. Today I was able to use sunscreen on the arms and GET OUT AND RIDE! I rode 53 miles at a 16.4 mph pace and boy does it feel good. I will be able to start commuti... Sat, 23 Jun 2012 22:13:55 EST First century of the year http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4919201 Last Saturday was the MS 150 on Virginia's Eastern Shore. I showed up to the start later than I had wanted to. My team mates had left at 7AM and I didn't get on the road until 7:25. The team captain is a very social sort and like to chat people up at the rest stops. I knew if I could get in and out of the rest stops quickly, I could make up the time and catch up to my team. I finally caught them at the third rest stop, which doubles as the lunch area. I grabbed a quick lunch and we were... Sat, 9 Jun 2012 17:36:31 EST Night time rides http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4899463 I really love a good hard night time ride. I get to use my Monkeylectric wheel lights. There is little or no traffic to contend with. ...and I don't have to bother with sunscreen. Sun, 27 May 2012 00:06:55 EST Short break http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4893661 Took a short break this last weekend. Got to go to visit my youngest grandson for his first birthday. We had a grand time. Tue, 22 May 2012 21:40:36 EST Race with Nature http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4883391 Wow! What a way to get my intervals in. I am watching the weather radar on my computer at work. A storm has just passed over head and I have a small window of time before the next wave rolls through. I head out riding hard as ever. I had a good hard ride in to work and another at lunch time, so the legs aren't exactly fresh. It starts to rain, but the lightning and thunder are a little ways off. I seem to be riding along the edge of the storm. First it's raining and then it's not. I ... Tue, 15 May 2012 23:02:25 EST Extending the daily ride http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4877137 I have been getting 17-20 miles per day during my commutes. This week I took the bike out at lunch time for an extra 12-15 miles, 3 different times. I am trying to push my total monthly distance to a new level. If I can get 12 miles extra per day twice per week, I can add another 100 miles for the month. I'm thinking of doing core on MWF at lunch and the ride on Tuesday and Thursday. Fri, 11 May 2012 13:38:47 EST Looking good http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4867615 I got the Trucker back late yesterday afternoon. She looks brand new. They replaced all brake and shift cables, and adjusted both for proper operation. They replaces all bearings and she rolls much smoother now. They cleaned her top to bottom and she really looks great. I had them put new handlebar tape over the existing tape to provide for more cushion for the longer rides. I'm thinking that I should get this done every 5000-6000 miles instead of waiting for another 10,000. I went for... Sat, 5 May 2012 12:14:51 EST In for a tune up http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4865471 Well, it was time. The LHT has gone in for an overhaul. That bike has carried me for over 10,000 miles without so much as a broken spoke. Brian, my bike shop guy, told me I can probably get her back by Saturday. He hasn't seen her since I changed jobs in July of last year. He ordered the LHT for me in January of 2010. She came in at the end of March and the love affair was born. Our first ride was Saturday, 27 March 2010. A nice 50 miler. Well, here it is 10,000 miles later.
<B... Thu, 3 May 2012 22:24:22 EST Fresh start http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4862767 I have been riding consistently for whole year. The first three months saw some very good weight loss, but April has been different. I have not been tracking the input like I should and have been eating far more than I should. This month, I get back to the basics. No excuses! Wed, 2 May 2012 09:58:01 EST The first century (attempt) of the year. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4848905 Well, it was the century that wasn't. It was raining well before the ride began, and continued throughout the entire day. The temp started at 50 and stayed very close to that. The wind was out of the NW and was relentless. The route was one big hill after another. Other than that, it was a great day for a ride! The smiles and camaraderie were abundant. I met several new friends and had a good time. Unfortunately, the cold rain scared off many people who had signed up to ride. Many of... Mon, 23 Apr 2012 21:47:33 EST First Century coming soon! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4815420 Well, I have gone and done it. I have registered for my first Century ride this year. The ride is the Powhatan Historical Bike tour, which has 31, 62, and 100 mile routes. I have to admit that I am a little nervous. I rode my first century last year on the first day of the MS 150. I didn't decide to do the century until I was at the 60 mile rest stop. I now have the next 20 days to think about it. I have completed 3 half centuries so far this year and will probably do another one befor... Sun, 1 Apr 2012 18:21:27 EST First three months of the year http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4814201 Well, the first three months are in the book. I can say that I am happy about the results. I have ridden 1575 miles so far this year. I have gone from 305 down to 279. My speed has increased dramatically through long, hard interval training.

I am pace to reach my goal of 6000 miles for the year and 12 half centuries. My first century this year will be April 22nd with the next two during the upcoming MS 150 in June. I am actually looking at organized rides that are longer t... Sat, 31 Mar 2012 22:16:18 EST Riding in the rain http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4804488 Yesterday, I went for a fifty mile ride. Even though it rained for the last fifteen miles, it was a very enjoyable ride. I think the rain helps to make it a cleansing ride as well. There is a lot to be said about being alone with your thoughts, listening to the rain hitting your helmet. Riding in the rain can be very refreshing, besides you can only get so wet. Sun, 25 Mar 2012 20:06:24 EST Third 50 miler for the year. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4804102 Rode my third half century yesterday. Fastest one yet with an average pace of 16.26 mph. I am closing in on a half century under three hours. Sun, 25 Mar 2012 14:27:44 EST Fastest commute so far http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4798895 Rode 17.64 mph for my round trip commute today. I am so pumped! Wed, 21 Mar 2012 22:36:43 EST The morning after http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4795578 This morning, I was really feeling the effects of yesterday's yardwork and ride. I guess I over did it a bit, but after doing my core workout, everything seems to be back to normal. Mon, 19 Mar 2012 19:09:35 EST Yard work part two http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4794189 Well, the yard really needed the attention. It took me five hours to complete everything. I would be working on one thing and see something else that needed doing. Well, I still got in a good hard hour ride in the neighborhood, so all is well. Sun, 18 Mar 2012 23:46:21 EST Yard work http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4793310 mmm....do I do the yard work first, and then go for a ride? or the other way around? Sun, 18 Mar 2012 12:23:54 EST New PR for the week http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4791925 When I started the bicycle workout in the book, Ride Your Way Lean, I had an average pace for the week of 14.6 mph. This Saturday will wrap up the eleventh week of a fifteen week program designed to help me lose weight and ride faster. I weighed in this morning at 284. That is down from 305 on Jan 1. I will finish this week with an average pace of over 16 mph. I am so psyched about that. It will be fun to see just how much faster I will get as the weight continues to come off. Sat, 17 Mar 2012 11:17:26 EST New PR today http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4790947 I felt really strong this morning while riding into work. I had one 15 minute interval of 17-18 mph and four 1.5 minute intervals at 19-20 mph scheduled. It turned into a single 22 minute interval at 18-20 mph. I had an average pace of 17.6 which included stoplights and the parking lot at work. The interval training is really paying off. Fri, 16 Mar 2012 16:28:51 EST Welcome back Spring!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4787621 I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back an old friend, Spring!! Spring and I go way back. All the way back to 1963. We have had an annual get together every year since. Sometimes Spring is running a little late, however sometimes Spring is able to get here early. Either way, it is always a blessing to have Spring arrive and I look forward to our reunion each year. Welcome back Spring, let's party! Wed, 14 Mar 2012 15:56:57 EST Good hard ride http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4781063 I had 3 set of ramps to do today and I nailed all of the paces and times I wanted to? Sat, 10 Mar 2012 19:00:34 EST Warm ride home http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4776264 I really enjoyed the ride home. Temp was 65 with a strong, southerly training wind.
Wed, 7 Mar 2012 20:15:35 EST Enjoyed mycommute http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4771320 The temp was about 35 out this morning, but no wind. I had a nice mellow roll and got to see a Great Egret and a Blue Heron at the ponds. I really like to just sit and watch them hunt for fish. Mon, 5 Mar 2012 08:30:16 EST Got my interval done http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4769219 Rocked out the intervals during this afternoon. I was scheduled for 3, 15 minutes intervals at 16 mph. It turned into a 5 minute warm up and a single 88 minute interval between 16 and 18 mph. I am getting faster!! Sat, 3 Mar 2012 22:00:32 EST Rain for Saturday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4766682 Looks like rain for Saturday. I will need to get out early in the morning to get ahead of the rain. A couple of hours should do nicely. Fri, 2 Mar 2012 08:14:12 EST Fishing today http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4765614 The building I work at has small retention ponds on three sides. They are primarily for rainwater collection, however they do support a healthy population of fish. I keep an ultra light fishing rod at work for those days I want to try my hand at catching a few. At lunch time the temp was 75 degrees, no kidding. I had to get out and get some sun, whether I caught something or not. I fished for about half an hour and caught five fish. (4 bass and 1 crappie) I'd say that was a lunch hour ... Thu, 1 Mar 2012 15:16:11 EST Beat the rain http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4763196 I beat the rain in today. I got some intervals in during the commute and have a few more planned on the ride home. I looks like the ride home will be wet, but I'm not made of sugar. From my experience, once your wet you can't get much wetter. As long as there is no electrical activity, what the heck. My panniers are water proof, and for the most part so am I.

On a side note I will hit 9000 miles on the trucker very soon. It's probably time to get a tune up. Wed, 29 Feb 2012 10:48:48 EST Head winds http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4761573 Rode in today facing headwinds the whole way. This really just equates a slower ride in, but it does require more work. A friend of mine who competes in ironman triathlons refers to them as training winds. Tue, 28 Feb 2012 12:42:43 EST Cool ride in this morning http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4759242 I really do enjoy early morning rides when the temps are near freezing. What a way to wake up. Mon, 27 Feb 2012 08:28:29 EST Got the intervals done http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4758810 Well, yesterday was just to windy to get the intervals done, so I did them today. 3 sets of 15 minute ramps with a 5 minute warm up and 10 minutes rbi. Good hard ride, just what I needed. Sun, 26 Feb 2012 22:42:16 EST
