EUPHRATES's SparkPeople Blog EUPHRATES's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community New BLC, New Team, New Start Well, a number of things I mentioned in my last blog didn't go as planned...and as it turns out that is a GOOD thing.

I did NOT do the Flying Pig. Which turned out to be an EXCELLENT decision, because my daughter's graduation from college was that day! SO PROUD OF MY AUTISTIC KID!

I DID do the Heartwalk with a team from work, which was comprised mostly of my family (a few ot... Thu, 8 Jun 2017 08:25:30 EST Setbacks won't get me down, bring it 2017!! I have been pondering for several months the idea of doing the Flying Pig Half Marathon this year (no need to do the full, that is crossed off the bucket list). Both because I really enjoyed it in 2012, I need fitness goals to keep me motivated, AND (mostly) the 20th anniversary of my mother's death is this May, and it just seemed appropriate to walk in her memory again (coming full circle from doing the Disney Half with Train to End Stroke in her memory with my sister in 2004). I had also th... Wed, 4 Jan 2017 06:06:41 EST Revamping Goals Honestly, it appears that I updated my goals on my Sparkpage early last month, probably at the beginning of this round of the BLC (Biggest Loser Challenge, I rejoined this round after several away from the Corral with my Midnight Mustangs).

But it's never a bad idea to shake the dust off and remember what you're are working towards.

Short term (weekly basis goals):
Go to the gym at LEAST 3 times per week, working up to 5.
Follow the 100 Pushups Challenge sch... Sat, 29 Oct 2016 12:07:38 EST It's AHA Heart Mini Time Again And I'm not going.

Seriously (SERIOUSLY!) considered heading down to the expo today and registering for the Heart Walk tomorrow, but then I remembered I have to work at 11pm tomorrow night, and I have to make smarter choices than that with my physical challenges these days. Sleep has become one of those things I have to pay attention to, since I'm working nights (and flipping the schedule around isn't as easy as it used to be). ESPECIALLY with Monday morning dates with the grandba... Sat, 12 Mar 2016 12:05:19 EST A Little Updating Is In Order - Hey, I'm a Nurse!! I graduated from my nursing program in December, and passed the NCLEX-RN exam on January 26, 2016, so I'm a full-fledged nurse now! Of course, it took a few weeks for them to transition me from working as a nursing aide at my current job into a nursing role, but I'm now 2 weeks into training and it's going pretty well. It's still weird - I find myself reacting first as an aide (i.e. when the aides ask me things, my first reaction is still "why are you asking me, go talk to the nur......oh wai... Mon, 7 Mar 2016 05:30:14 EST What Inspires me? A Reminder to Myself I realized several weeks ago that “Extreme Weight Loss” was well into a new season and I’d been missing it (thanks to changing cable/internet/phone providers – the new DVR wasn’t set up to record it! We’ve since rectified that oversight). This has actually turned out to be beneficial – now, even when I’ve already watched this week’s episode, there are still plenty of episodes I can catch up on via On Demand when I’m feeling the need for inspiration.

But before I share about the ep... Wed, 9 Sep 2015 18:05:45 EST Mixed Bag of Updates Today marks 3 weeks of successfully NOT ending my streak and logging into Sparkpeople every day! I'm pretty stoked about that (and the fact I made the decision to set up my browser so it automatically launches Sparkpeople when I first open it for the day, which has REALLY helped).

That said, it's been a mixed bag of progress. I did pretty well the first week, and moderately well the second week, but this past week has been more of a struggle. I had several "I haven't had enough sl... Sun, 6 Sep 2015 15:30:25 EST Nursing School is Hazardous to Your Health When I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and Type 2 Diabetes (wow, nearly a year ago now) I had to withdraw from school and sit out a semester from the nursing program. I chose to look at that time as being "in training to go back to school" and lost over 30 lbs (even winning a "Biggest Loser" challenge at work). I also took that time to finish the last course for my double-major and got to walk in the graduation ceremony with my classmates, even if I wasn't actually graduating as a nurs... Mon, 17 Aug 2015 23:59:37 EST For My Sparkfriends not on Facebook - GRANDBABY! Well, okay, he's not much of a "baby" anymore (he's going to end up taller than ALL of us if his 2 year old measurements are any indication). My daughter-in-lawless (and Sparkfriend PHOENIXXRISING) put these up after the family went out to play in the snow.

Reminds me of the video of the puppy that jumps into the snow and disappears...

335 Do you want to build a snowman? 335</em... See that sentence up there?
With the quotes?
THAT is what my Nurse Practitioner said to me at the end of my appointment today.
334

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and Hypertension on September 22, 2014 (and subsequently took a leave from nursing school to try and get things under control). At that time, the NP gave me 3 months (which turned into nearly 5 months before I managed to get my caboose in to get the blood work done and schedule today's ap... Tue, 17 Feb 2015 18:45:01 EST It's not a diet, it's a "live it"! My workplace has started a "Biggest Loser Challenge" - anyone who joins in pays $5, and the person who loses the biggest percentage of body weight at the end of 9 weeks gets the pot.

I've joined as an extra incentive to keep on track, but I don't expect to win (nor do I particularly care - sure, $$ is always a good thing, but I rarely win contests so I've learned not to make a big deal of such things*shrug*).

That said, I can't help but roll my eyes at some of my "comp... Thu, 5 Feb 2015 15:36:34 EST When having a UTI is a GOOD thing - A Thankful Post I've been meaning to do a follow up blog to my last entry for a while now, but life keeps getting in the way. So of course, there's tons to update by now, but I'll try to do the "short version" (those of you who've known me longer than five minutes are laughing now, but honest, I'll try).
20

When I went to the doctor on September 22nd, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure (and put on an ACE inhibitor and diuretic combination), AND was diagnosed with Type 2 Di... Thu, 27 Nov 2014 13:47:14 EST Dear Everybody - I'm Scared First of all, for anyone who has sent me PMs or poked me here, thanks! There's no way I can go back and respond, because my sparkmail is packed and overwhelming (mostly with team notices that are ridiculously out of date) so I'm just going to delete everything and start over.
347

That said, starting over is something of the theme here, as something has to change. It's bad enough I've gained 26 lbs since my last blog entry in January. That was in the very beginnin... Sun, 21 Sep 2014 15:13:53 EST Sticking a toe in the proverbial pool... So, I'm in week 4 of Nursing 102 - which means I've mostly made it through "Boot Camp" (they warned us in Nursing 101 that the first 3 weeks were the make-or-break period). And wow, they weren't kidding - I can't remember ever living with such sustained astronomical stress levels. The first week or so, the mate had to put me back together on nearly a daily basis as I panicked over assignments and impending skills assessments (none of which was helped by multiple classes being cancelled due t... Sun, 26 Jan 2014 13:30:37 EST So, I've joined the BLC again. Here, have some goals. I've got a far longer blog percolating regarding my impetus to start working on being healthy again, and news of various sorts...but THIS blog is due for points within the next 20 minutes. So you'll have to wait for the rest. :)

211

For this round (BLC22) my goal is to get back in ONEderland again. Since I started back to sparking a few weeks ago, I've gone from 216 to 209, which makes me supremely happy. My basic goal is to lose 10 lbs in the next 12 weeks... I'm having a very hard time with this.

I don't know if I can even begin to write about it.

There are something like 40 Sparkpeople participating this year - the JASR crew did themselves proud. Fri, 26 Apr 2013 20:42:59 EST You're not done 'til you're dead, and even then you can go to medical school... Or maybe...not.

A lot of you know the story of how my dad is my hero. An exceptional student in everything he did, being male he was pressured (as most men were back then) to go into the math and science field, and he got his bachelor's degree from NYU (my dad grew up in Brooklyn) in Chemical Engineering. But as he worked in that field (including serving as an engineer when he was drafted in the army during the Korean can imagine the stories of a platoon full of engineer... Sun, 24 Feb 2013 18:08:02 EST 2013 - The Year of No Excuses Okay, I know we're more than 3/4 through January and I still haven't updated my "goals for 2013" (as I'd promised in my last blog). That's largely because I've been taking things week by week lately, making small goals as I go along. And it's been working.

It's actually working really well.

301
The first week of the month, I started tracking again (and made spinning the Spark wheel every day a priority again). Just tracking, and spinning the wheel. Th... Sat, 26 Jan 2013 18:02:02 EST 2012 In Retrospect At the beginning of the year, I wrote a blog splitting the year into two parts and making a goal for each - part 1 was "Year of the B.A.M.F" and part 2 was "Year of the M.I.L.F"

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=4655782

It is not lost on me that the first part involved very specific fitness goals (training for the Flying Pig and the Warrior Dash) and the second part just involved the much more general "losing the rest o... Tue, 1 Jan 2013 13:38:39 EST It's been a busy week. :D Had the first migraine that laid me out (had to call off work) in nearly 2 years (I suspect I pushed it a little too hard that last week of class).
198

Finished the semester with my 4.0 GPA intact.
104

But the best part? And despite my vows never to see the 200s again, and the months of bouncing around in the 190s trying not to let it happen, there it is.

It could, however, have been far worse. Gods know the past 2 months I've been on a spiral of binging and comfort eating, and I haven... Sun, 11 Nov 2012 12:21:08 EST Things are kind of scary right now... Now, don't get me wrong. Life is EXCITING! I've got a solid A in three out of four classes for this term (even before taking the Algebra final tomorrow I know this, and I'm currently twitching waiting for the Chemistry grades to be posted, that's the one that's borderline and dammit I WANT that A). I met with my adviser yesterday and things are on track for me to apply to the nursing progression for the spring semester (which would mean I'd start actual nursing courses in January). I've got a... Tue, 7 Aug 2012 12:53:53 EST So...some stuff happened... Have I mentioned recently how utterly unbelievable it is to me that I've been so ridiculously crazy busy even though I'm still unemployed?

198

Which gives me pause wondering how I'll ever survive all this with work on top of it. HOWEVER, I expect the discipline of a regular schedule would lead to more organization which would then lead to better productivity, so it'll all work out. But at the moment, it totally seems like some kind of fairy tale world that I j... Tue, 10 Jul 2012 14:17:46 EST GoT: Battle For Winterfell Challenge - Week 2 Goal Update Blog Arg.

Last week's challenge was all fitness minute oriented. I've got that part down. THIS week? Food oriented. Yeah, not so much. And unfortunately, while you'd think having to focus on eating would have made me more mindful and I would have thus made better choices, it didn't seem to work that way. Our challenges were to 1) stay below our top calorie limit, 2) practice mindful eating by journaling before and after eating and 3) 5 points for each servings of freggies (only 3 can b... Tue, 5 Jun 2012 16:33:19 EST June Spark Reboot! So in my previous "funk blog" I gave myself a deadline - I could have my pity party until June 1st, at which point I'd dust myself off and get back on the Sparkpeople wagon in earnest.

Yeah, I didn't last that long. I'm in a funk, kids. Seriously.

You'd think I'd be soaring, right? I mean, my daughter and I did a full marathon at the beginning of the month. I immediately lept into nurse's aid training, and have been meeting with advisors and getting ducks in a row to start college classes at the end of June. So you'd think having not been working the last month, I'd have had PLENTY of time to blog and keep up with Sparkpeople. Yeah, not so much - between running around getting everything together that I need to have for the various school endeavors I'm working on, errands with and/or for the kids, travel and the actual TRAINING, and the fact I was without my computer for about a week, I'm ridiculously behind. I can't BELIEVE the last training blog I wrote was right after St. Patrick's Day! SO muc... Sun, 1 Apr 2012 17:59:47 EST On To Happier Things - Vacation Blog! With Pictures (lots)! And WOLVES! Well, the plan HAD been to get on the road by 7am on Thursday, but nothing ever goes according to plan when travel is involved. LOL Happily we only ran about an hour later than the goal, so we were on the road just before 8am, and really ran into NO traffic heading south (and honestly only dealt with two short slow-downs on the way home either, both of which I blame on UK...but I digress). The reason for leaving early? We were meeting up with MONETRUBY, one of my fellow Wisteria Wolves, in Kn... Tue, 27 Mar 2012 09:18:07 EST Marathon Training Catch Up Blog! So when we last left our intrepid would-be marathoners, they'd been sidelined by sickness for a week. Happily by last Wednesday I was feeling MUCHMUCHMUCH better and was ready to tackle more hills! Unhappily, my daughter was scheduled to work until 5:30 PM, and between one delay and another there was just NO way we were going to make it across town in rush hour traffic to meet up with the group on time.

What did we do? Did we scrap it for another day? Did we just knock it out on t... Tue, 20 Mar 2012 06:38:34 EST Sparking at the 35th Annual Cincinnati AHA Heartwalk! So as most of you know by now, we did NOT get the required 15 people on our team to get the Sparkpeople logo on the backs of our shirts this year, but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm of those who participated! I spent last week running around getting race packets to most of the participants, which gave me a chance to meet some WONDERFUL folks face to face! I didn't get any pictures of those running the earlier races, but a HUGE thank you and congrats should go out to REDEMILY, Michelle, Rob... Phew!
198

I wasn't sure how things were going to go, since I knew I HAD to get up super early today in order to pick up the AHA Heart Mini packets for the Sparkpeople of Cincinnati team before the Heart Association closed at 4:30 PM (tomorrow is the very last day to pick up team boxes, I wasn't able to get it last week since I was so sick). And I wasn't having a lot of success getting to sleep when I first got home. I probably managed about 5 hours before the alarm... Mon, 12 Mar 2012 22:34:32 EST Sickness Happens 234

When I left work on Wednesday, my stomach was queasy. I figured it was stress (I'd gotten my first "pop quiz" from our newest "OMG Most Important Customer EVAR!" around 7am which, though not nearly as bad as it could have been, left me shaking for a good 20 minutes and required a quick trip to the ladies room to fall apart and then put myself back together again) and even though my daughter had to work late so we'd already planned to skip the group walk that night, I... Sat, 10 Mar 2012 07:19:02 EST Group Marathon Training 10 - And the mileage increases Wow, those were SOME storms on Friday, huh? Added some excitement to Game Night with the kids, that's for sure (as the worst of the storms were hitting, I was picking up one of our cats from the vet - the kids, and our friend Jimmy who'd been invited to join in, all tried to reach me and couldn't get through - the cell towers were being bombarded by people who were checking on loved ones apparently). It didn't dampen the fun though - got to show the kids one of the DVDs I had made from one of... Mon, 5 Mar 2012 05:53:07 EST Group Marathon Training 9 - HILLS and an NSV Hills are our friends! That's what Rich (the primary walking coach) tells us, anyway. And considering The Pig is a hilly course (it's Cincinnati, not like you could really avoid hills here), it's good to practice right? Right!

But FIRST, we met up at the warehouse early for a clinic to review range of motion warm-up drills and post race stretching. I am REALLY glad we went - they went over at least 3 separate variations on stretches for each major leg muscle you want to be sure an... Thu, 1 Mar 2012 18:41:04 EST Group Marathon Training 8 - Chilly but we did it! First of all, if you're keeping track, we missed another mid-week group training run this week. Things at work came to a bit of a head on Tuesday and I worked myself into a headache that could have gone into a migraine, so I took Tuesday night off (frankly more of a mental health day than anything, though the headache could have become an issue but it mostly settled down once I'd made the decision and called my supervisor). Which under normal circumstances should have made things EASIER in te... Sat, 25 Feb 2012 12:09:05 EST Group Marathon Training 7 - We did WHAT?!? Seriously? (Picture Heavy) It was a BEAUTIFUL day for a walk when we got up bright and early on Saturday! I was READY! Picked my daughter up at 6:15 and we were at Bob Roncker's in O'Bryonville by 6:45 AM, plenty of time to check in, check things out, hit the potty and get ready to hit the road. This week they had samples of Gu for us to try so we can start experimenting on these longer training sessions to determine what works for us in terms of fueling for long distances. According to the information Rich gave us, yo... Sun, 19 Feb 2012 05:32:43 EST Discouraged Blog is Discouraged Well, okay maybe not exactly. Just hitting a wall I had hoped I wouldn't hit I guess.

So I got some news before I left work on Wednesday morning. That last hour or so of work was actually rather eventful with news from several fronts (most of which I had to keep under my hat since major announcements were happening during the day...I expect to hear ALL the fall out when I go back in Saturday night, and I don't expect it to be pretty).

But my boss called me to his offic... Thu, 16 Feb 2012 14:04:21 EST Individual Marathon Training Session 6 - Back on the horse! First of all, I want to thank all my sparkfriends for putting up with my whining yesterday. I was REALLY down most of Sunday, and knowing I had mainframe maintenance looming when I came into work just made it all that much worse. Happily the maintenance last night wasn't nearly as painful as the fiasco 2 weeks ago (though I'm not trusting that to be a trend, still too many unanswered questions going into the next one in 2 weeks for me to have a "warm fuzzy" about it).

You guys raw... Tue, 14 Feb 2012 02:05:34 EST Not A Happy Shiny Blog I feel like a slug.

No really.

I made a conscious decision to take Friday as a rest day, in anticipation of walking 11+ miles on Saturday. I was all enthusiastic about walking in the snow - I was READY!

Until a) I ended up sleeping in a lot later than usual on Friday, forgot to plug in the crockpot so dinner was late, and only remembered I needed to get to bed early once it was too late to make that happen and then b) I got up Saturday morning (after 3 hours... Mon, 13 Feb 2012 00:07:01 EST Group Marathon Training 6 - Getting In The Groove I think it's starting to gel, this whole marathon training thing. Not that I'm there or anything, I'm just finally falling into the rhythm of the process.

I was tired when I got up from my "nap" after work on Wednesday, but jazzed about getting out there to walk with the team. I'll admit, I was a little disappointed all the snow from the flurries that morning (we got about half an inch) was gone by the time I got up...oh well (from the sounds of it, we're likely to get 1-2 inches ...
