I ran my second marathon this past Sunday in Philadelphia. It had a completely different feel from my first one in Gettysburg. I ran both with my close friend, Caitlan who has been an unbelievable support system in my life for the past two years going through this journey.

As I ran Gettysburg, I remember feeling tough. As if it took every ounce of grit, determination, and focus to put one foot in the front of the other toward a huge goal that, at one point, had terrified me. ... When I first started losing weight, I would kind of hoard my daily calorie allotment knowing I’d end up eating a lot at night. I realized this was not the best plan so I started eating a larger breakfast, medium lunch, and an afternoon snack before a small dinner. I thought this would make me less hungry at night and therefore keep me out of the kitchen… not so much. It just seems to mean eating way more calories per day (often putti... Thu, 1 Aug 2013 22:05:37 EST My First Marathon I ran my first marathon April 28th in Gettysburg. I’ve been meaning to blog about the experience since then but I’m struggling to put words to it. There seem to be so many pieces. Eighteen months ago I was obese, inactive and generally unsatisfied with my life. I didn’t have much of a social life and I was a pretty negative person. I got involved with a Biggest Loser challenge at my job and it started the ball rolling on the journey to weight loss, a more active life and a more positive ... Mon, 22 Jul 2013 17:00:23 EST Back to Spark for Help with Last 10lbs! I guess it’s been about three months since I’ve been really active on sparkpeople. I was down nearly 60lbs and going strong. I was spending a lot of time on sparkpeople, tracking everything I ate and all my exercise, blogging regularly and was an active participate in my sparkteams.

I guess I left because I just wanted to see if I could live like a normal healthy person without thinking constantly about weight loss and the ever-important equation of calories in vs. calories out... Thu, 18 Jul 2013 11:43:02 EST 11 Days until 26.2! I'm enjoying the tapering period leading up to my first marathon. I think I actually forgot what it felt to wake up without aches and pains LoL. The running has been dialed back and my legs are feeling fresh again for the first time in months. The date of the marathon is actually on the extended forecast... But far enough out that you can't trust it yet. It's still fun to see though. The last time I was stalking the weather like this was before my wedding day lol.

Here's my week a... Wed, 17 Apr 2013 22:29:41 EST The Spirit of the Boston Marathon This morning 27,000 runners excitedly carbo-loaded, laced up, and stood in pace groups waiting to put months of training and dedication to the ultimate test... running Boston. They crossed the starting line with something to prove and a crowd to inspire. Their friends and family lined the streets to see their hard work payoff. Friends and family who had inevitably been there through past triumphs, PRs, ice baths, sweat, and tears.

Some ran Boston because it was their home town, ... Mon, 25 Mar 2013 11:45:01 EST This Week's Workout Plan Marathon training continues to build for the next two weeks. This is going to be a CRAZY busy week so I’ll keep this short and sweet.

I feel like marathon training is all-consuming. It’s like having a second job. If I'm not running, I'm planning to run to eating to run or doing laundry to run. Never mind the recovery junk (icing, getting enough sleep, stretching). The challenge isn't so much the actual running but finding the time at this point. I know I’m almost to the peak before the final taper and it will be at least a little better... Mon, 18 Mar 2013 11:33:28 EST First 16-miler/Stomach Bug/ Daily Goals The Good: I ran my first 16-miler this weekend. I purposely ran a seriously hilly route to prep for what is supposed to be a hilly marathon. I've been experimenting with liquid nutrition for the big day/ timing of drinking. I'm thinking it is going to be a combo of Gatorade and water, focusing on more in the first half. I felt super excited to finish but my hips hated me yesterday.

The Bad: I threw up post 16-miler Sunday and thought it was the Gatorade but I got sent home from w... He isn't a runner but he wanted to build up to a 5K but not do an official race. He ran with me last night and completed his first 5K! It was fun to share something I love with him and it brought me back to a year ago when I was in his place. I don't think he'll ever love running but I hope every now and then we go together.

I said I was going to set some daily goals. My eating is out of control again. I’ve got away from tracking some days (which I had been religious about for a long time). I am training for a marathon and I know that I need extra calories for that reason but the honest truth is that too frequently I’ve been eating because I’m bored, tired, or stressed. The quality of the food I’m eating is seriously lacking and I’ve returned to a lot of bad habits that I had “gotten over.” Last week, I had to take... Tue, 5 Mar 2013 16:38:19 EST Step-Back Week in Training This week I have a "step-back" week in my marathon training program so my weekend long run is shortened to give a little break, which is good because I'll be going out of town for the weekend. Here is the plan for this week:

Monday: Rest/ Dog walk
Tuesday: 3 miles
Wednesday: 7 miles
Thursday: 4 miles
Friday: Rest
Saturday/ Sunday: Crosstrain one day for 45 minutes/ Ten mile run the other day Mon, 25 Feb 2013 09:45:54 EST Workout Plan for this Week Monday: Rest day (done)
Tuesday: 3 mile run (done with new route by my office)
Wednesday: 7 mile run (done...on the treadmill...ugh)
Thursday: 4 mile run (done)
Friday: Rest (Woo Hoo!)
Saturday/ Sunday: 15 mile run one day/ 60 minutes cross training one day (done and done) Mon, 18 Feb 2013 12:13:58 EST Marathon Training Does Not Equal Eating Free For All I’m frustrated with myself. I know better, but I keep feeling like because I’m doing so much running recently, I can eat pretty much whatever I want. I haven’t been really consistent about tracking and I’m seeing the results of that on the scale. I’m going to be the only person ever to GAIN weight while training for a marathon if I don’t knock it off. I know what I need to do and just because I’ve ramped up my workouts, it doesn’t give me clearance to eat a bunch of junk. In fact BECAUSE... Thu, 31 Jan 2013 21:07:14 EST This Week's Workout Schedule Marathon training continues this week. This week is a “step-back week” in the Hal Hidgeons program so my long run is a little shorter this weekend. I’m excited about this because my legs could use a little bit of a break. This is my workout plan for the week:

Saturday: 60 minutes cross training (I’m thinking spin class but I’m not sure)
Sunday: This was supposed to be my 7 mile step back run but things got turned around due to an unexpected funeral service.
Monday: 1... Fri, 25 Jan 2013 14:57:23 EST The Reason I Run In so many areas of my life, I feel like I spin my wheels and work really hard because it’s expected. There is no positive reinforcement and very few pats on the back for “accomplishing” dishes, laundry and day to day work. After graduation, getting married, and finding a job… it feels like there are no other “events” celebrating goals or milestones, nothing else major to work toward. Enter… running.

It was never something I ever expected to love. I only started running because... Mon, 21 Jan 2013 14:58:38 EST Registered for My First Marathon!! After some encouragement from a friend and a serious 10 minute panic attack before clicking the “Submit” button, I have registered for my first full marathon. It’s happening in Gettysburg on April 28th. A friend and I are running the same race so it’s going to be an out-of-town marathon-weekend! I’m so excited!

A year ago I never thought I’d enjoy running at all, let alone be registering for a race of this distance. I’ve been kind of digesting the concept all week. It feels su... Fri, 18 Jan 2013 15:46:02 EST I'm Pickier Than A Child :-) I am a picky eater. I'm worse than a five year old child. I will spend time preparing foods with vegetables and then actually pick around them! I have been this way as long as I can remember so it has been one of my goals to actually learn to prepare and TRY new vegetables. I am a nutritionist for children for a living and counsel about picky eating A LOT. It's time to put my money where my mouth is and start following the advice I give to parents... which I admit is a little embarrassing. He... Sun, 6 Jan 2013 22:04:59 EST Workout Plan for this Week It's finally New Years Day and I'm finding myself relieved that the holiday parties are over. It will be nice not having to resist all the extra temptation event after event. It's also nice because all of a sudden EVERYBODY will be resolving to lose weight so there won't be nearly as much social pressure to eat and drink.

I'll have my official post-holiday weigh in on Thursday or Friday morning. I'll be happy if I didn't gain back 5lbs in the last month.

Here's the Pla... Tue, 1 Jan 2013 18:35:54 EST Before and "After" With Puppy Pics Just thought I'd have a little fun reflecting on what hasn't been a perfect year, but a year in which I've made more progress toward a healthy lifestyle than I thought was possible for me. This is a picture of me with Cliff when he was just 10lbs in November 2011.

Here we are today, December 2012... he now weighs about 55lbs, which is about my total weight loss thus far.
<img src=" Mon, 31 Dec 2012 16:41:42 EST How Did I Get So Turned Around?! A lot. I also have a bunch of holiday parties. Here is my workout plan and eating goals for this week.

Friday: Gym after work for "black and blue" mystery workout Friday (usually interval training). There is a little graduation party after that. I'm making sugar free cocktails. (Didn't work out because there wasn't time. Did make sugar free cocktails).

Saturday: Early AM run (7-8 miles) before getting in the car for two hours ... Thu, 20 Dec 2012 21:57:21 EST Plan for Another Holiday Party Week Challenges this week:

Tomorrow: I am making 6 dozen cookies for an office cookie swap. I will have a healthy option (cucumber salad) at hand while I'm cooking so I munch on that. I will plan into my day, one finished cookie post- baking. (This started well and ended badly. I ate my cucumber but then some batter. It could have been worse.)

Thursday: Actual office cookie swap. I will have a taste of everything but not a lot of anything. I'll do my best to track but it migh... Tue, 11 Dec 2012 20:42:20 EST Happy Freakin' Holidays! I had such good intentions for the holiday parties this weekend and it seems to have all gone awry... Quickly and badly. Friday's plan went out the window and I went WAY over my calories (mostly stupid girly drinks).

My long run never happened on Sunday, which is my most challenging workout of the week so it was a bad one to miss. We got our Christmas tree instead. I should have gone in the morning but instead I slept in (thanks to staying out late at ANOTHER work party).
<... Mon, 10 Dec 2012 21:11:44 EST Workout Plan/ Holiday Party Strategy This weekend begins the onslaught of holiday parties. This is a list of the events and my plans:

Friday Evening Office Holiday Party: I am heading right to the party from work. It's a small catered event held in an administrative conference room with more desserts that dinner options. My plan is to bring a substantial healthy option to eat at the end of the workday or in the car on the way. At the party, I'll pick a small dessert option and drink water so I have something to hold w... Wed, 5 Dec 2012 21:50:45 EST I Like A Challenge!
I have (like so many others) what seems like a hundred Christmas parties on the calendar. I have THREE office parties for my job, one for my husband's office, two friends parties, and three family parties, all before I host our own New Years Eve get-together. There are buffets, cookie swaps, restaurants, and pot lucks among them. All of this seems like a spark-nightmare.

Here's the thing though... I'm finding myself more focused I think BECAUSE of the holidays. It feels a lo... Sun, 2 Dec 2012 17:58:46 EST "Black and Blue Fridays" My gym has a “December Holiday Challenge” which is actually a lot like the Sparkpeople website, only its real life. You get points for tracking your eating, points for fitness minutes, points for attending classes, etc. You also get points for some “feel good” things for the holidays like bringing in food to donate to a local pantry. There are also bonuses you can get by doing special things, like taking a demo of a new class or participating in “Black and Blue Fridays.”

On Bla... Fri, 30 Nov 2012 09:53:24 EST Vegan Baking and Acting like a Child I have a great friend (and running buddy) who is finishing up her last semester of college in the next weekish. I decided to put together a “finals week” care package. I wanted to include a batch of cookies but she’s vegan.

I found a recipe online and went shopping. Holy Cow… is it expensive to be vegan! Maybe I just felt that because whenever you buy ingredients to make an unfamiliar recipe, you end up needing a lot of things you don’t keep on hand but seriously… $12 for unr... Thu, 29 Nov 2012 09:43:18 EST Amazing Run Tonight! It's freezing cold in the Northeast right now. We are expecting snow again within days and it's just bitter outside. I had planned a gym day with my hubby tonight but he's got a bad cold and consequently, he couldn't go to the gym or go with me to walk our 1 year old lab/pit mix (who started giving me the sad eyes after dinner).

Plans got changed. I layered up and put on Cliff's harness. He's a notorious pain in the ass on walks. History has taught me that he's kind of a puller an... Mon, 26 Nov 2012 21:51:18 EST Motivation and Forward Motion I spent this long weekend at my in laws house for the holiday. My mother in law is a successful product of weight watchers herself, which makes it easy to eat healthy at their house. She's usually great for commiserating about my newest challenge (currently, getting rid of these stubborn last few pounds) and talking about her experience with maintenance. She is also a runner and invites me along to her workout classes so it's a nice way to spend time together and focuses our attention on some... Sun, 25 Nov 2012 18:01:42 EST My Soap Box and Thanksgiving
Tomorrow is black Friday and I am a shopper! I will have all my shopping done for the season by tomorrow night. I decided this year that I will NOT shop the night of Thanksgiving. I think it's crappy that stores are openning so early this year. Thanksgiving should be a family day... Friday is for retail craziness. I used to work retail in college and I think it's unfair to the store employees too. I will be leaving at 4am tomorrow morning so I can still get a few door busters (no big ti... Thu, 22 Nov 2012 22:45:26 EST Thanksgiving Week Plan I have a few interesting challenges this week. First, this weekend we are having friends over for winery tours (and tastings) but I’ve offered to drive so that should eliminate the wine calories for the most part. Then there’s the road trip to and from the Philadelphia area for thanksgiving, I’m going to try to be prepared so I don’t have to eat drive thru food on the road. Then there’s obviously Thanksgiving Day. I’m actually not planning to track my calories that day but I am going on a... Fri, 16 Nov 2012 12:38:40 EST Almost There... No Excuses! I have re-found my discipline in the past two weeks and finally got back to where I’d been and a little lower as of yesterday. I keep reminding myself that it’s a lifestyle change, not a diet and a few “bad” weeks aren’t going to make or break me… just set me back a little on my timetable. I’m now 6.2lbs from my goal weight of 135lbs. I’m 1lb away from a healthy BMI (140lbs). I’m fired up to get to my goal before Christmas. I don’t want to take a weight loss goal into 2013 with me. I’d ... Fri, 9 Nov 2012 10:59:16 EST This Week's Goals/ November Goals This Week’s Workout Plan:

I usually have a solid plan and schedule for my workouts each week but I know this week is going to be a little more challenging. I don’t think it will be hard to get in the fitness minutes, but I’m really not sure in advance what I’ll be able to do depending upon weather, if I have a workout buddy for dark early morning runs, and when I’ll get home from out of town on Sunday. I know this week’s plan will be a little loose, but I just want to have a gene... Wed, 31 Oct 2012 14:35:20 EST Slutty Halloween Costumes My husband and I are still relatively new to our area so when a friend invited us to a Halloween costume party, we thought it would be a great way to meet people. We got the invite Friday and the party was last night. So we set out to look for costumes, which always seems like it's going to be fun until you get to the store and are reminded that the overwhelming majority of costumes available for women are whore-ific. No big deal though, I pick out something that I feel comfortable in. It... Sun, 28 Oct 2012 11:22:37 EST Craving Control & This Week's Workout Plan I've been working on changing the habit of sitting around after dinner and snacking in front of the TV. The snacks are rarely healthy, usually sugar-craving driven, and sometimes I don't feel in control and it results in mini-binges. Earlier this week, I made a to-do list of things to do instead of giving in to my cravings. It's actually been pretty effective. I'm back within my calorie range most days, I have less laundry and my insane stack of unopened mail is sorted. Win win win! I've also... Wed, 24 Oct 2012 22:43:48 EST Sugar Craving Stategy De Jour I am having a really hard time with sugar cravings in the evening after dinner. I think it’s boredom eating and it’s a junky habit so tonight… I have a plan.

Things to do Instead of Eating Junk Food:
• Fold and put away the laundry (finally)
• Go through the giant stack of mail
• Unsubscribe from unwanted e-mail lists
• Get my phone synced up to my google calendars
• Take the dog for an extra long walk
• Buy paper towels
• Plan dinner for tomor... Thu, 18 Oct 2012 14:21:10 EST New Plan for Finding Motivation! After losing 55lbs and gaining 4 back over the last couple of weeks (due to a clear lack of motivation), it’s time to re-instate some of what worked in the beginning. I’m 11lbs from my goal weight now that I’ve gained some back. At the beginning of my weight loss journey, I had a reward system that worked beautifully and my “rewards” were frequent enough that I would get something every 3(ish) weeks. I was SUPER consistent about tracking my calories. I still track but probably not as accu... Wed, 17 Oct 2012 12:58:03 EST Please Tell Me To Knock It Off!!! I'm not sure what the heck has been going on with me for the last 3-4 weeks. I'm not making any excuses for myself. I've been really off the wagon in terms of me eating and this past week, my exercise is falling off too. I know it's a mental thing but I can't put my finger on what it is exactly. I'm not feeling depressed. I'm not really up against anything new. I keep saying that I'll "get back on the wagon starting tomorrow." I've worked so hard to get this far and I'm sabatoging myself day... Tue, 16 Oct 2012 21:51:37 EST Running as a Couple? Maybe! My husband has been pretty supportive of all of my weight loss efforts, especially my running. He’s come to every race (5K, 10K, half marathon) happily. He’s not on this journey himself so sometimes it’s difficult for him to understand why I’m tired earlier at night after an early morning workout or why I can’t have a few glasses of wine on a Saturday night if I have a long run Sunday. He’s said that he’s been appreciative of my healthier cooking but I can tell he’s a little put off when ...
