EARTHTONED84's SparkPeople Blog EARTHTONED84's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Back after being out for almost a month from a herniated disk. Hey everyone! It's been a while since I've logged onto SparkPeople! It feels nice to be back into the swing of things :) I had a strained back about two-four months ago and I kept working out and pushing myself to get fit and lose weight. I thought that I was just sleeping funny or I wasn't stretching enough before and after my workouts. I had no idea that it would become sciatic nerve pain which then escalated shortly after my spinning class I took, into a herniated disk. I was out for... Tue, 6 Nov 2012 12:05:40 EST "trusty" scale My scale is broken. I feel happy about that, yet sad. 41 39

Happy because maybe I am less and maybe I haven't truly been bouncing back and forth between the same two numbers for weeks/months.

I am happy because I might not be mental in thinking all of the hard work I've been putting forth has garnered a mere 2-4 weight loss for foreeeeverrrrrr.

Sad that my "trusty" scale is not really trusty.

Sad because now I will have t... Mon, 8 Oct 2012 11:19:01 EST I survived a spinning class and lived to tell about it! Yesterday my good friend Beth and I decided to try our hand at a spinning class at our local gym. I personally felt (maybe Beth felt the same way?) that since we had been cycling outside in the good weather, then this class might be a piece of cake...or at least a half. Let me set the stage for you. One teacher, five participants. Age ranges from 26 to 65+. Four women and one man (he was an older gentlemen sporting appropriate biking shorts). I had my heart rate monitor and ended up bur... Tue, 25 Sep 2012 13:24:13 EST Stumbled, yet again. I have fallen off the track of wellness and I am truly scared to weigh myself. Alas, it must happe. I will update tomorrow. Thu, 8 Mar 2012 12:34:36 EST My trainer kicked my ass and was smiling the whole time! Yesterday I worked out with my trainer Dan Rice (funny how his last name is a starch AND a carbohydrate). Last night we worked on chest, abs and shoulders and since I was incredibly out of it from finals and not getting enough sleep in general, (my description and his too) he made me do DOUBLE the amount of work. Let me just say I woke up sore as he|| but I was happy that I worked hard enough to be in actual pain the next day. No pain, no gain, right? HeH -.- Whoever made that quote up ... Tue, 13 Dec 2011 15:25:47 EST Making time for myself. With all the hustle and bustle going on with the holidays 443 and everyday life, it is important to take time for your self. Once a day I take time out of my day to work on myself. I have come to LOVE going to the gym 319 , blast some loud motivating music 339 into my eardrums and work out all of my frustrations 234 , agitations 101 , annoyances, sadness 39 and tiredness 102 into the workouts that fuel me to stay with ... Mon, 12 Dec 2011 11:07:24 EST I am excited for the future! I joined a new gym within the last three weeks and with the new membership comes an hour and a half trainer session. That hour and a half was well spent too! The first portion of the session was full of setting goals, understanding how the body works when we train certain muscle groups specifically in a day rather than working all of the muscles for 10-15 minutes, how classes are really meant for maintenance and can be great as fillers but its where the strength training is at to lose fat ... Wed, 30 Nov 2011 07:45:48 EST Maybe it is not so bad so long as you go at your own pace. Referring back to my previous blog post, I have decided that so far, I enjoy spinning when I am all alone in the class room going at my own pace. Last night I had planned on going to a 545 PM spinning class and was anxious the whole car ride over. It turns out I misread the class schedule and there was not a class held at that time. I had gone to a class last Sunday with a friend but I wanted to keep going even if she couldn't come. The goal was to become acclimated with the bike, with th... Sat, 26 Nov 2011 09:53:44 EST My armpits hurt and I am ok with that. I have found that I can stay in total control of what enters my stomach from 7AM-5:30PM during the work week.

Last night I went to the grocery store to pick up some things for an Asian Pear, Ricotta and Vanilla tart. I had drank about 10 cups of water throughout the day, 2 cups of tea and a 20oz of coffee so I was feeling pretty full when I got to Giant Eagle. As I am making my way throughout the store, I start to get hungry and even a little light headed. I was almost done wi... Wed, 23 Nov 2011 10:47:45 EST The idea of spinning... is so much different from the actual experience. Today I attended my second class (the first one occurred about 5 months ago). I went with a friend and we stretched, ate a good breakfast an hour before the class. We get there and this guy who obviously has been there times before helped us get situated with our bikes. I was so pumped and nervous all at the same time.

The instructor showed up, set up her music equipment and we began our journey to amazingness.

I las... Sun, 20 Nov 2011 18:33:00 EST Suggestions for upbeat music to run to! Next month (more like 1.5 weeks) I am going to be heading to Cincinnati to run in a 5K with a bunch of awesome gals! To help me get motivated and to help me keep a pretty decent pace I am making a huge list of songs to play on my iPod during the race. Does anyone have suggestions?

Hope everyone is staying cool! Don't forget to drink lots of water! Thu, 21 Jul 2011 13:58:57 EST Moving soon and need suggestions of medium sized dogs! So I have been in the process of looking around town for an apartment that is on a bus line for work downtown (whoohoo! saving $ on gas and parking fees!), safe area to go for walks and stay active, within walking distance to a grocery store and a couple of other requirements. I have found three that I feel like, at this point, I can't pass up!

A few months ago I was looking to room with a friend of mine but because of a random car issue she is no longer able to make the move :( ... Thu, 14 Jul 2011 12:56:25 EST Out of the starting gate this morning... I didn't do too hot. I hit up the Dunkin' Donuts before work and forgot to get skim milk instead of cream and forgot to get a sweetener instead of sugar. AND I caved and got a plain bagel with cream cheese instead of one of the smart breakfast sandwiches that has at least half, if not more than half, of the calories, fat and carbohydrates. I basically belly flopped this morning but I am going to make it a commitment of mine today to not let that mess up effect the rest of my day food wise... Fri, 10 Jun 2011 10:40:53 EST So here is the new plan that I am adopting as a life change... 1.) Weighing myself only ONCE every two weeks.

2.) Eat my steel cut oats for breakfast and love every minute of its sweet goodness (even though it is getting warmer and warmer, that stuff keeps me full for hours!)

3.) Drink at least 9 glasses of water. Not only does it help me keep my cravings in check, it helps me when I work out hard and need that extra boost to keep going. (today I didn't drink enough water and it affected my running :[ )

4.) Plan at least... Thu, 26 May 2011 20:52:09 EST The Biggest Loser... ALWAYS inspires me keep going! Last night I watched the finale...and let me tell you, the sky is the limit! Don't give up! It IS possible to reach all of your goals! I can't wait to get off work to hit the gym, kick some butt and take names!

Love ya'll! Wed, 25 May 2011 15:30:25 EST I hate you scale...why do you always suck me in? Since having been back to the grind of counting calories, eating cleaner, drinking more water and exercising (still working on getting better amounts of sleep), I have gained some weight. At the gym I have been alternating each work out day with upper and lower body exercises and at least 30 minutes of high intensity cardio (ex. elliptical, bike, treadmill). Yesterday I ran 2 miles for the first time and even though I know I should not have weighed myself this morning, I did and it looks l... Wed, 25 May 2011 11:08:41 EST 50 Question Survey about Moi!
1. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?
I think I may have been named after a great aunt of my mother's.

2. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?
Oh, wow, I would probably say I haven't cried in the last 2-3 months.

3. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING?
I have my days where I like my handwriting.

4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCH MEAT?
Low sodium sliced turkey. Delish! I think it tastes better than the sodium saturated kind.

5. DO YOU ... Mon, 23 May 2011 12:54:13 EST Feeling hungry after having my afternoon snack. I'm hungry even after eating an amazing healthy salad and some seaweed snacks. I have had 10+ grams of fiber so I don't understand why I am feeling hungry. bleh. Tue, 17 May 2011 15:16:32 EST Another sign that I am heading in the right direction! I haven't worn this knee length pencil skirt since last spring. I wore it today in a rush to get out of the door. What used to be tight, so tight in fact that I would have to wear it above my belly button to make it fit (!!) is now too big in the waist. I like the skirt so I might get it altered to fit my size now. What a nice little discovery!

Oh, and I have decided to do 20 push ups (girly ones) right before bed and right after I wake up as well as doing super mans to tone my... Thu, 31 Mar 2011 13:25:57 EST Dayum! I bought a new pair of dress pants for work because my old ones (Lane Bryant size 16) no longer fit properly!!! I spend half the time pulling them up! Over the weekend I decided to finally buy a new pair of pants (Does anyone else find that they kind of don't want to buy new clothes because you are still working to get more fit and thin?).

I went to Kohls (I have found some things in the past but pants wise I always have problems) to see what was on sale and see if there were a... Tue, 29 Mar 2011 11:12:45 EST Self doubt Isn't it interesting how you might have all the self confidence in the world and then something happens or you just over analyze a situation that knocks your confidence and self assurance down a couple of pegs?

I won't get into it in detail but I recently conversed with a man that works in the same building as I do. I came in over the weekend to put some hours in the office and we ended up talking. We really hit it off. We talked about work, our family and a couple of other to... Mon, 28 Mar 2011 14:15:07 EST You know those creepy people who sit there in the sauna, hot tub or the dry room.... and out right stare at you while you are swimming, trying to get some laps in. CREEPY!!!! Don't sit there and STARE at me! Do I have a sign on my head that says "please look at me while I swim"?!

I don't know about anyone else, but I hate getting into a swim suit let alone a lap swimsuit. Having an audience just makes it even more nerve wracking!

Sorry for the rant but I had to get it off my mind! Mon, 14 Feb 2011 10:21:34 EST Smooth Operation is gone :( I usually don't enjoy peanut butter as much as I have in the last two weeks. I was shopping around at Giant Eagle and took a stroll down the peanut butter isle. I found Peanut Butter and Company Smooth Operator! I love it! It has less calories, less sugar content and tastes amazing. The only downfall is that it has palm fruit oil in it (when I go grocery shopping I will look for another brand that has no extra oils added). I have been eating two tablespoons with my high fiber multi-grai... Wed, 9 Feb 2011 13:21:59 EST My bridesmaids dress has arrived!!! I am so excited to see how it fits since I ordred up about 2 dress sizes just in case. My measurements are just weird and it meant that I had three different size dresses. Soooo I went up a few just in case. I am so excited to see it!! I was just in Cincinnati for the indoor triathlon and Stacey told me it came in yesterday! I have the best luck. Should I just wait until March 5 (I will be going back down to Cinci for Stacey's Bachelorette and Bridal Shower) or should I try and see it b... Wed, 9 Feb 2011 09:34:04 EST Completed my first indoor triathlon! 237 332 312
Hey ya'll! Just got back from Cincinnati where my friend Stacey and I completed our first ever (definitely not our last) triathlon! It was so much fun!!! I am excited to attempt to do another this summer. Here is a picture of Stacey and me after we finished.

Congratul... Sun, 6 Feb 2011 21:41:22 EST The good, the bad and the best! Yesterday I kicked my own butt at the gym and I'm darn proud of it. I did my chest, back and arms and ran a mile. Now today I feel super tired *wish I could sleeeeeep* and my whole top half of my body is super sore but it's ok because I am starting to see other changes in my body!

My good friend is getting married in T-minus 86 days until the celebration! My biggest concern is slimming down my chubby face and my arms. I think with the rate I am losing weight and toning I think ... Fri, 4 Feb 2011 08:03:37 EST The little things that keep you going when you think you might fall off. Today at work I went downstairs to get some lunch because I wasn't prepared and didn't take the time out to plan ahead. In my head I'm thinking "should I get a small soup and maybe a turkey sandwich?" "Small soup and a bag of pretzels?" I was creating these combinations of things I could get to satisfy my lunch hunger. Truthfully, I was not happy that I had to order from downstairs because 1. too many distractions and temptations and 2. I have no idea what they put in what to add to my tr... Fri, 28 Jan 2011 12:53:35 EST I fell in love with running. Who knew this would happen?! Yesterday I packed my clothes for going to the gym straight after work because I just didn't feel like going home, packing then heading out again. I forgot my water bottle, my towel that I use for my glowing face and socks o.O Really??? It's not as bad as the time I forgot my workout pants though! I ended up strength training for about an hour and heading home to run outside in my neighborhood.

I just got a new shirt and leggings from Under Armour so I was excited to see if ... Thu, 27 Jan 2011 12:35:47 EST Jiggle jiggle, no? So, I am fat. I have been fat for what seems like forever. I have a lower belly bulge that is totally bleh. I like my pants/shorts to lay around my belly button area. I know, super high pants. For some reason, I feel better when my pants are higher up. Anywhoo, I have been wearing Spanx under my workout clothes because I hate it when I "jiggle jiggle" while running or doing my Jazzercise. Today I could not find my Spanx to save my life. I literally only had 5 minutes to find them bef... Wed, 26 Jan 2011 00:08:30 EST Take that, Treadmill! So lately I have been stressing over being able to complete a 5K distance. I am signed up with my cousin to participate in one in AZ during the month of March. Last week I was only able to push out a half mile (don't know if I psyched myself out?) so I did other forms of cardio to get my head back into the game. I spoke with my cousin who suggested focusing on the endurance rather than the mileage. So today I strove to running for 20 minutes. In the process of watching t.v., breathing pr... Sat, 22 Jan 2011 16:21:58 EST Carrots hate me... so I found out. I had an inkling that my tummy didn't fair so well when I ate raw carrots but today confirmed it. At first I thought it was because I ate broccoli two days ago but usually my tummy hurts and I feel bloated right afterward, not 2 days after. I pin pointed it with some "official investigations" and concluded that it was indeed the raw carrot that I had eaten in my made over tuna salad recipe. I literally only put in 1 whole carrot into the recipe. If this is a sign of what ... Tue, 18 Jan 2011 18:06:49 EST 5 years ago!! Today I weighed myself and found that I've lost 22 pounds so far which puts me at 223. I haven't been this weight in, oh, 5 years! I am so excited and motivated to continue shedding this weight and improving my life. 9 216 Mon, 17 Jan 2011 11:31:04 EST First 5K I signed up for my first 5K and I am so excited! Sat, 15 Jan 2011 16:11:38 EST With the bad can come the good? Yesterday I was supposed to grab some tea with a friend that I haven't seen in months because of our busy schedules. I was running late from getting off work later than I thought I was going to. Our other friend who we both haven't seen in a very long time dropped in as well as a surprise! We chatted, we gossiped, we caught up blah blah blah. It was decided that we go out to dinner since, of course, tea was just not enough time to chat and catch up.

Here is where it get... Sat, 15 Jan 2011 12:17:47 EST So long scale...for the next two weeks at least! This past month I have been OBSESSED with my scale and have been weighing myself almost everyday (which I know is not the way you are supposed to do it but I can't help myself!!). This has messed with my confidence in myself, confidence in what I am eating, confidence in my workouts and the overall aspect of "losing it". So I have decided to take a hiatus from the scale and just keep working out the way I am doing, eating the good-for-you foods that I have been eating and return to weigh my... Wed, 12 Jan 2011 07:53:35 EST Trying not to get discouraged. On the exercise front, I am doing well. I am working out everyday whether it is 20 minutes of elliptical, 2 hours at the gym or an hour of Jazzercise. I am FAILING at eating. I am not sure if because I am strength training and upping my cardio that I am eating too much or not enough. Right now I am eating at the higher end of my calorie range when I workout hardcore but on the days that I am doing something light I tend to eat at the lower end of my calorie range. I know that because of ... Mon, 10 Jan 2011 11:08:15 EST A great way to start the day! This morning my sister and I woke up at 630AM for an 815AM Jazzercise class. Boy, do I love going on the weekends! There were about 40 people there at one time!!!!! You can feel the energy bursting out of everyone as we burn 600+ calories in an hour! After getting back from the class I had 8 ounces of water mixed with Aria Women Protein Powder with a serving of oatmeal and a teaspoon of sugar. Tonight my sister and her boyfriend are coming over to make homemade healthy pizzas (gluten fre... Sat, 8 Jan 2011 16:05:06 EST WHY SO MUCH SODIUM?!?!?!?!?!? It baffles me that most restaurants add so much sodium to their meals. I "thought" I was getting a healthy meal at Applebee's ( Cajun Lime Tilapia with veggies...which I might add had butter on them even though I asked for nothing of that nature to touch those beautiful florets!) but just now when I was entering it into my food log, the calories are 310 but the sodium was 2000+! This ANGERS me. What the HECK? I would like to write to them as why they feel it is a "healthy meal" aka Weight... Thu, 15 Apr 2010 22:30:33 EST I cannot believe I accomplished this... Yesterday I went to the gym with a friend. I hopped on the treadmill and started walking at a 3.5 speed with a 7 incline. I eventually lowered the incline and shot the speed up to 4.5.

I just ran.

I cannot even begin to explain how relaxing it was to run! I wasn't thinking about anything, I was listening to music that pumped me up and I just stared at the back of a guy's head who was in front of me.

I pushed through the pain and the exhaustion and I kept... Thu, 15 Apr 2010 10:45:41 EST The choice is yours and yours only. I recently read a community topic on SP that asked whether or not people enjoyed their workout buddies. Many of the comments were that people didn't enjoy working out with others because it took too long, they felt their buddy couldn't keep up or vice versa, that if their buddy didn't show up that they may not workout either and etc. etc. etc.

312

Today I was really excited to workout with a friend of mine after work and I just got a text saying she was not ... Sun, 11 Apr 2010 14:18:16 EST A road bump... Yesterday I was so on track with my water intake as well as my meal and snack choices...up until 6PM. I had a half a cup of homemade chicken paprikash and let me tell you, that was a BAD decision. I haven't had a lot of milk or butter lately so maybe that is why I suddenly did not feel good and felt so tired. Today I am sticking to all of my meals and snacks. For lunch, my coworker and I were thinking of going out for lunch. This is what I am going to get. I am going to get a side salad... Thu, 19 Nov 2009 11:29:52 EST Fell off the wagon for a bit I am back and ready to reach my goal! I have signed up for the Rec center in my home town and I am finding it rather easy to work out after getting home from work. I enjoy the treadmill and the eliptical. I am slowly increasing my speed for both but I am hoping I will have the courage to run on the treadmill and not just walk. I am maintaining a 1000 calorie a day intake as well as drinking nothing but two cups of coffee a day (with splenda) and water.

I have opened new horizon... Wed, 18 Nov 2009 10:50:08 EST sleep is essential. Yesterday I got home from work and ate my horribly uncool dinner then sat down to do some reading. Well, I woke myself up with my snoring I guess because I look up and my dad is laughing at me. So I apparently walked upstairs to my room, took out my contacts...and went to bed. I woke up at 11:30 went downstairs and drank some water then went to bed, again.

My sister tells me that I talked in my sleep telling people to keep quite when they were walking past my door.... oh lord.... Fri, 10 Jul 2009 11:35:45 EST So far, so good. This is day #2 of me being serious with my goal of losing weight on SP. Today started off really well. For breakfast I had a .5 cup of old fashioned oatmeal with a smidge of sweetner and some hot mint tea with no sweetner/sugar. For a mid-morning snack I had a 100 calorie pack of dry roasted almonds. I have had 4 cups of water plus the tea. I just hope I can stick with it and not get bored of my meal choices!

Whenever I get involved with losing weight, whether here or through ... Wed, 8 Jul 2009 11:01:32 EST MEATLOAF. So it is past midnight and I just finished making my veggie meatloaf for this weeks lunches! Hopefully it will taste as good as it smells :) Having such a sudden burst of energy has got me thinking...I should definitely start planning my lunches out for work. I hope I can stay on track!

My problem areas are:

1. Portion control.
2. Late night eating.

If I can get these under control and keep active I think I will make some serious progress <em... Wed, 8 Jul 2009 00:30:18 EST Now is the time. Over the past few months I have been thinking of how my weight has effected me. Socially, personally, professionally ect. It has occurred to me that I am no longer as young as I used to be which means my already slow metabolism will soon be even slower. I am finishing up school and looking to the future but with my weight as a burden hahahahahah..... I am worried I will not be all that I can be. Self doubt is much too prevelant.

I am so excited to finally have a friend join!... Mon, 6 Jul 2009 15:58:38 EST What happened?!/ I need a walking buddy~ Four years ago I was able to lose about 40lbs through Weight Watchers and ever since then I have slowly gained the weight back. I want to be fit and look good but I also want to be healthy. Hopefully with the support of fellow SP members I can stay on the straight and narrow and rock this goal of mine!

So today I have been fairly good. For breakfast I had two pieces of rye toast with..I will admit...butter on them and I'm working on a huuuge bottle of water. I hope I can stick ... Fri, 1 May 2009 11:46:03 EST
