I'm relieved to report that the surgery went well, and lab reports came back negative for cancer!

While I was anxious about my dad's surgery, I didn't feel much like eating between meals, so I ended up losing weight while I was there, despite sitting a lot. Now I'm down 15 lbs on my home scale from my highest weight in mid-March! I hope to keep the momentum going! (I'm actually ... Mon, 8 Jun 2015 11:16:09 EST Back to Weight Watchers Meetings http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5918372 After many inconsistent months on Weight Watchers Online, I decided to go back to a Weight Watchers meeting last week. I was surprised to be down just a little bit from my last official WW weigh-in in January. Well, at yesterday's weigh-in I was down 2.2 lbs! That's more like it! Still such a long way to go, but it's a start. Mon, 27 Apr 2015 08:20:27 EST Starting Another Dietbet http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5779770 My sister and I decided to start another Dietbet tomorrow, and that's really helping with the mojo. I have some fresh veggies already washed and cut in the refrigerator, and I've made another grocery list for this evening's store run.

We welcome other people into the game, we've called The Thinner Winners. There's strength in numbers, much like SparkPeople.

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 16:46:15 EST Looking for Motivation http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5770375 I've lost my mojo. Has anybody seen it? *sigh*

Life's so busy, but I'm not the only busy person. I don't want to use "busy" as an excuse, but it's still a fact of life, especially right now. I'm three months away from finishing graduate school, so my free time will look much different after December 1. I don't want to let my health keep sliding between now and then, though.

So I'm looking for ways to stay motivated and make small changes. Ideas and weight loss buddies (... Sun, 31 Aug 2014 09:49:17 EST Moving On http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5661494 I'm not as grumpy about the Weight Watchers thing anymore. I started a new DietBet today, and am ready to roll! My sister and a fellow grad student are doing the same DietBet, and they'll be a great support system! Here we go! Tue, 1 Apr 2014 08:22:55 EST Frustration with Weight Watchers Sign-up http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5660866 I haven't signed up for Weight Watchers yet, and I'm already frustrated with it! Why? Because I've spent a good 30-45 minutes trying to sign up online, without any luck! For some reason, it doesn't like the address I've input to mail my monthly pass card to. I've looked at the Address help on the WW website, and tried different ways of typing in my address, like typing out the word "street" vs the abbreviation, putting the period after "St" vs leaving it off. I've also tried different web b... Mon, 31 Mar 2014 12:39:42 EST Checking In, Thinking about Weight Watchers http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5652396 I've been busy with life, work, and school since my last blog entry on my birthday, but I haven't done much about my weight. I've been holding pretty steady, not losing but not gaining either. Now that Spring is here, it feels like a new start.

Has anyone tried Weight Watchers lately, with the Simple Start plan? If so, I'd LOVE to know how you like it! Thu, 20 Mar 2014 12:13:07 EST 50th Birthday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5556966 I turned 50 today. I'm still processing this beginning of a new decade! I did weigh in today, and didn't like what I saw, but at least I know. I did weigh in a little bit less than I did on my birthday last year, so that's something.

Work today was nice. My colleagues were sweet with cards, a few gifts, and several birthday wishes. It made me feel lots better! And this evening, I'm going out to dinner with my family. It'll be my dad's first meal out since his stroke, which will be ... Wed, 4 Dec 2013 17:22:20 EST Progress on Dad http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5545933 I've really appreciated all the comments on my last post about my dad's second stroke. Thanks, everyone!

Dad was released from the hospital day before yesterday, and is now in a local rehab facility. He's getting better, but progress is so slow. Hopefully he'll make more progress in rehab! It's tough to see him like this!

Meanwhile, I'm back at work, and in my afterwork time, I'm juggling visits with Dad and graduate school. The deadlines for my last two projects are str... Wed, 20 Nov 2013 08:58:03 EST My Dad's Second Stroke http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5530530 My dad had his second stroke on Thursday night. It was mighty scary, but not because it was Halloween. He can talk a little, but can't walk or eat yet. Each day, we're hoping for a little more improvement, but the doctors and nurses tell us to be patient.

The neurologist showed my sister and me Dad's brain MRI (or CAT scan?), and it was quite sobering to be able to see not only the stroke hotspots, but also the signs of vascular damage and brain shrinkage. We're all so worried, bu... Sun, 3 Nov 2013 00:02:46 EST Starting Another DietBet on April 8 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5306153 Okay, I'm ready to start a new DietBet, Mission Slimpossible 3, starting on April 8! I've hit a plateau during this current DietBet, but being part of the game helped me stay the course better than I have before. I'm ready to jumpstart my weight loss again! Come join us at:

or search for Mission Slimpossible 3 at DietBet.com. Sun, 31 Mar 2013 10:16:23 EST Join Me for Another DietBet on Monday, March 11! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5276164 I posted a few weeks ago about starting my first DietBet, where I'd be trying to lose 4% of my starting weight in 4 weeks! A big challenge, yes, but one I decided to accept! Well, "Mission Slimpossible" wraps up on Sunday, March 10. How have I done? So far, in about 3.5 weeks, I've lost 6.6 lbs! I've had a setback or two along the way, but with the DietBet and our little team of 6, I've gotten back on track quickly and kept going. To each the 4% goal, I'll need to lose another 4.8 pounds by S... Wed, 6 Mar 2013 15:46:10 EST Starting 4-Week Challenge Next Monday to Lose 4% http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5237417 Recently, one of the Facebook pages I follow, The Anti-Jared at
https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Th
e-Anti-Jared/285102642711?fref=ts
, mentioned starting a challenge on DietBet.com. So far, the Anti-Jared's Challenge has 347 participants, and the pot is currently at $17,300! Everyone who loses at least 4% of their starting weight in 28 days will split that pot equally! Wow!

I don't remember hearing about DietBet until I read about it on Anti-Jared's page, so I... Mon, 4 Feb 2013 15:32:25 EST Back in the Water http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5225566 I went back to the pool last evening, rather than doing yesterday morning's water aerobics class. I walked 5 laps in the water, then did some exercises the PT suggested, including front, side, and back kicks holding onto the walk. It was a great workout without overdoing it. Can't wait to go back! Sun, 27 Jan 2013 12:20:53 EST Overdid Water Aerobics :-( http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5220794 Last Saturday, I did a water aerobics class that really worked me! I tried my best to keep up, because I wanted to push myself. Well, I ended up injuring my knee. How do you hurt your KNEE in water aerobics?! I thought the water would save me (and my joints) from all injuries! LOL Well, I've learned a hard lesson. My knee still hurts, but I haven't been to the dr. yet because I have a physical therapy appt in the morning anyway. I'll do what the PT recommends.

Meanwhile, I've done... Wed, 23 Jan 2013 21:48:16 EST Wake-up Call http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5213472 One of my aunts died this morning from complications from a stroke. She was a "young," thin, energetic 73, but had a heart attack a few years ago. As far as I know (and I might not), she had recovered from that. The stroke some weeks ago and the struggles since have all been so sad and tragic. For as long as she held on, I guess there was some hope of a miracle until about 3 days ago.

I have a number of health issues to work on, and this is some added inspiration to keep working ... Fri, 18 Jan 2013 19:34:19 EST Day #3 of Get Moving Challenge http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5209562 Today is the third day of the Get Moving Challenge at work. I'm tracking pedometer steps, exercise minutes, and weight loss. So far I'm doing okay, but know I can do better. One thing this challenge has reminded me is that small walk breaks can add up, and will help with my bloood sugar control and overall health.

Every two weeks, our team numbers will be consolidated, and we'll get our team rank, compared to other teams across the university. It'll be interesting to see how we do... Wed, 16 Jan 2013 08:16:52 EST End of Vacation http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5192717 This is my last day of vacation. I return to work tomorrow. It's been a really good two weeks, but I'm ready to get back into the routine, I think! I plan to go to the grocery store this afternoon and stock up on healthy things, and I plan to go to bed at a decent time tonight.

Thankfully, I just have work this coming week. School doesn't start back for me until next week. One thing at a time! Sun, 6 Jan 2013 08:45:28 EST Ordered New Pedometer Today http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5169447 I ordered a new pedometer today, and I'm looking forward to its arrival! At work today, we got word of the new employee health team competition that starts on January 14. I created the Bookworms team for the library system at the university where I work, so I'll be the team captain! Hope this will help with motivation. Mon, 17 Dec 2012 20:24:17 EST Today's Workout a Bust http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5167666 On the way into the gym this morning, I got a phone call that my dad was having some health problems. Needless to say, my workout was cut short, and I've been stressed today. Thank goodness, he and Mom are back home now, and looking to see some doctors in the week ahead. We had a good conversation this evening. Thank goodness for phones and all, since they live 600 miles away!

Considering the stress, I didn't get off track too much, food-wise. Instead, I took a nap, which I needed ... Sat, 15 Dec 2012 22:21:17 EST Turning 49 on Tuesday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5154140 I'm turning 49 this Tuesday, December 4, and have been trying to decide on a big goal to work on for my 49th year. What would I like to accomplish by my 50th birthday? What should it be? One idea I have is to weigh myself on Tuesday morning and work toward a 50 lb weight loss by December 4, 2013. Any other ideas? Sun, 2 Dec 2012 23:13:50 EST Feeling Better Today http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5131520 I had a pretty good night's sleep last night, and am feeling better today! I still have laryngitis, though. Hoping that's better soon too!

Meanwhile, I'm so wanting to run again! I had hoped to do a spring half marathon, but think I'll take it slowly and shoot to walk a 5K early next year, then work my way up. I'm looking at the Second Empire Grand Prix Series for Spring 2013. Anyone want to join me? Complete 6 out of 10 races to attend the yummy Awards Luncheon at Second Empire Re... Sun, 11 Nov 2012 12:27:49 EST Down, but Not Out http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5129246 I'm home sick again today, but feeling somewhat better. I'm working on recovering from bronchitis and sinusitis (both better), laryngitis (not better at all), and possibly pneumonia. I worked half a day yesterday, and had planned to return today, but I was worn out when I got home yesterday. So I'm resting today, in hopes that it'll speed my recovery.

Meanwhile, I've been looking at half marathon training plans for spring races, in hopes that that'll inspire me to work out consiste... Fri, 9 Nov 2012 07:48:36 EST Back on Insulin http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5080340 Now that my blood pressure is stabilized and within normal ranges, my doctor has put me back on insulin, 10 units of Lantus at night. She's being very aggressive about getting my blood sugar numbers back under control, and I know it's a good (and very important) thing, but am disappointed in myself for getting back to the point where I need insulin again. It's given me new inspiration, though, to take better care of myself, get more exercise, and eat better. Sun, 30 Sep 2012 09:12:49 EST New Blood Pressure Monitor http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5060080 At my physical last month, my doctor told me to get a blood pressure monitor and start checking it daily at home. Without any recommendations or instructions (like best time for checking blood pressure), I procrastinated, then looked on Amazon for recommendations, then procrastinated again.

I finally stopped at the CVS across the street from my apartment complex earlier this week, and looked at their selection. I pulled one off the shelf, consulted with the pharmacist about the mon... Sat, 15 Sep 2012 08:35:31 EST Yesterday's Physical http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5035652 I went to a new doctor yesterday, and got my first overall physical in ages. I had to
'fess up to being too busy to take care of myself consistently lately, with my FT job, plus grad school and other things. The numbers spoke for themselves, though, so I've "hit the reset button," and start fresh today. My new doc has me coming back in a month to see how I'm doing!

If anyone out there is looking for a buddy to lose 100+ pounds with, give me a buzz! It's easier with a buddy... Wed, 29 Aug 2012 07:54:11 EST Couch to 5K http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4770846 I decided to reboot my running program, so I started the Couch to 5K program today. I've been running on and off for several years, but this is my first attempt at the Couch to 5K. It felt good to do some running today!

W1D1 done! Sun, 4 Mar 2012 22:14:44 EST Engine 2 Diet http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4675508 I finished reading the Engine 2 Diet Book this morning, and I'm definitely inspired to eat more veggies and fruit! It's a vegan diet, really, but it sounds so doable in this book! It just so happens that Whole Foods is starting an Engine 2 28-Day Challenge on January 23, so I've signed up to be part of it. The orientation is this coming Monday, and the challenge starts the week after. They'll have weekly meetup/workshops for motivation, etc, which will be great for me! Thu, 12 Jan 2012 07:54:49 EST Biggest Loser http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4673224 I turned on The Biggest Loser last night for the first time in AGES. (I don't know that I even watched the last season at all.) I was looking for a little motivation, inspiration, and some tips. While I got one idea out of it ("when grocery shopping, think of the basket or cart as your stomach"), and was inspired by the progress made by last night's voted-off contestant (they show a clip at the end of the contestant and his/her progress from vote-off to shortly before the episode airs), I was... Wed, 11 Jan 2012 08:32:16 EST December's Weight Log Challenge http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4647960 Last month, I was able to meet my goal of weighing in and logging the number on the scales for every day of the month. December included my first final exams of graduate school early in the month, in addition to my birthday and the Christmas season. I was curious to see how it all came out at the end of the month. With yesterday's weigh-in, I ended up with a net loss of 0.2 lbs. Even though I didn't set a specific weight loss goal for the month, I was hoping it would be more than that! Still,... Sun, 1 Jan 2012 10:10:29 EST Registered for 2012 Tobacco Road Half Marathon! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4601775 Well, I decided to commit to training for the 2012 Tobacco Road Half Marathon next March! I've actually paid money for it! :-P I'm very excited, really. I haven't done much racing in 2011, and I missed the City of Oaks Half Marathon earlier this month, due to plantar fasciitis and a busy fall schedule with grad school and work. I've got a lot to work to do, in both the workout and the weight loss departments, but I really want to beat my time from the 2011 Tobacco Road Half!

Stay ... Sun, 27 Nov 2011 21:17:16 EST 2011 Goal Update http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4269915 1) I've applied and been accepted to graduate school, and I'll start in August at North Carolina Central University! I'm so excited!

2) I completed the Tobacco Road Half Marathon, but decided to sign up for the City of Oaks Half Marathon instead of the Savannah Rock and Roll Half. Still thinking about that third half marathon.

3) I've almost saved for my first semester (two classes), but don't have much socked away for my second semester yet.

4) I've read 106 ... Wed, 1 Jun 2011 12:16:04 EST Goals for 2011 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3877492 I had a great 3-mile walk in Umstead State Park this morning, as I decided to work through Hal Higdon's Half Marathon Walk Training Plan for the Tobacco Road Half Marathon. It gave me a chance to think more about my goals for this year. So far, I have:

1) Apply to and start grad school in August
2) Do at least three half marathons: Tobacco Road Half in Cary, NC, the new Rock & Roll Half in Savannah in November, and one more undecided
3) Save enough money for the first two... Sat, 1 Jan 2011 16:11:16 EST Signed up for the Tobacco Road Half Marathon! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3871008 A couple of days ago, I signed up for the Tobacco Road Half Marathon on March 20 in Cary, NC! I'm very excited about the race, and love having a goal for the new year! The course is partially on one of my favorite places to run and walk in the Triangle, and the course limit is 7 hours, so I can walk it if I need to! (I'm hoping to be able to run some of it with the new custom orthotics I'll be getting, but we'll see!) Thu, 30 Dec 2010 07:33:12 EST December Goal-5 Pounds! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3821151 A few days ago, I decided that I wanted to end the calendar year on a strong note, in hopes of carrying some momentum into the new year. My goal is to lose 5 lbs. this month, even with my birthday and various holiday gatherings. I want to be more mindful of what goes into my body without being bah humbug, though!

I need to start by getting enough sleep! I'm having some friends over tomorrow night for supper, and have had a great time planning and getting ready, but it's been such ... Fri, 3 Dec 2010 08:29:03 EST Holding Steady http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3415485 Well, my weight actually reads the same as it did last Saturday, a week ago, but I've actually lost and regained the same 1.6 lbs! Okay, that's a little frustrating, but I've got to remember that it happens, and it beats gaining for the week, I just need to keep evaluating my food and exercise, and other healthy habits. If I keep doing what I need to do, the weight loss will happen. Fri, 9 Jul 2010 17:42:45 EST Started Another 100 Day Challenge http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3400886 I'm on Day 10 of another 100 Day Challenge. I decided I needed to kickstart my diet, but I want to concentrate on healthy habits in general. This time, I'm tracking my weight, my pedometer steps, and whether or not I've drunk 64 oz of water each day for 100 days, and tracking it in a spreadsheet on Google Docs. So far, I've lost some weight, and am ahead of schedule on my steps, and have hit my water quota on all days but one.

By the way, my pedometer steps goal is to walk 1 milli... Mon, 5 Jul 2010 14:15:15 EST Wow! Atkins/Low Carb Really Works! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3098318 I had my monthly check-up yesterday with Dr. Westman, the physician (internist) who's guiding me through this new (for me) low carb way-of-eating, and I had fasting labs done to compare the blood work to when I started in January. Not only was I down about 18 lbs and 7 inches from my waist, but my blood work was amazing! Without any medications, I had the following improvements:

A1c: 7.1 to 6.3
Total Cholesterol: 246 to 193
Triglycerides: 161 to 114
LDL: 168 to 128 <... Fri, 9 Apr 2010 06:45:51 EST Race Report: 2010 Run for the Oaks 5K http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3000907 On Saturday I ran/walked my 5th road race of the year, and my 4th 5K. I was happy to hit my best 5K time of 2010, a chip time of 46:35, and a gun time of 46:51. This race also had a corporate team competition, so I recruited a couple of colleagues who signed up for the team competition with me! I really enjoyed hanging out with them before and after the race, as well as seeing fellow Sparkers Tracey and Sharon after the race too!

The team competition part wasn't well "attended," so... Mon, 15 Mar 2010 08:48:28 EST Another 5K Tomorrow http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2901592 I'm doing another 5K tomorrow, the Law Enforcement Torch Run 5K for Special Olympics in Raleigh. The weather is supposed to be beautiful (at last) tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to that! The bummer is that I've been nursing a hurting knee, probably Runner's Knee. It is getting better, but it's not running-ready yet. I'm going ahead with the 5K, though, since it's part of a winter/spring road race series that I'm trying to complete. If I do at least 7 of 8 races, I get to attend the end-of... Fri, 19 Feb 2010 11:32:48 EST Second 5K of 2010 in the Books http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2861810 On Sunday afternoon I finished my second 5K road race of the year, and am excited about improving my time over last month's 5K! Progress has been slow but steady, and now that I'm working with a running coach AND losing weight, I plan to continue down the same road (only a little faster!).

In addition to a PR for the year, I had the privilege of meeting TWO fellow sparkers, one from the Durham NC team, and another from the SparkRaleigh team, for the first time! It was a delight to... Tue, 9 Feb 2010 15:15:56 EST Second 5K of 2010 on Sunday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2846044 I'll be running my second race of the year on Sunday, and I'm both nervous and excited about it! I've had a whole month of training with the running coach, and have lost a little bit more weight since then, so I hope this will pay off. Sunday's 5K course is a little hillier than last month's 5K, and I seem to be coming down with a cold this evening, so there will be some variables. But I'm hopeful that I'll see an improvement on Sunday and a new PR for 2010!

One of the things I'm ... Fri, 5 Feb 2010 18:23:26 EST First Race of 2010 Tomorrow! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2715776 I'm running the Run for the Young 5K tomorrow, and I'm both excited and nervous about it! It's my first race since the Outer Banks Marathon (which I didn't finish because of injury) in early November, and my first 5K in several months. It's also my first race with my new running coach! We talked last night by phone about the race, and I'm going to try to do a run/walk ratio of run .5/walk .1. I'm pretty nervous about that part, but I'm going to be psyched if I can maintain that!

Fri, 8 Jan 2010 16:01:04 EST Happy New Year! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2677161 Well, I weighed in today, and updated the number on various health-related websites where I monitor my health and exercise. It felt funny to be blasting my weight "all over the web," but the actual number is "for my eyes only" on every spot. Doing that helped me to remember that the amount that I weigh is just a number, just data to help me plot my course to a healthier lifestyle. It's not a measure of my self worth, eventhough it feels like it sometimes.

I'm looking forward to se...
