DOWNEASTLASS's SparkPeople Blog DOWNEASTLASS's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Working those abs! I got an app for those 30 day challenges - working on the abs - boy do they need working!! I just completed day three and I can really feel the muscles getting a work out. Looking forward to tomorrow's rest day, that's for sure.

Yes, the planks have really helped my back. I was worried that I was going to have problems, but now I know that I just haven't been working the stomach and back muscles like I should. Walking is wonderful, but strength stuff is necessary.

... Tue, 3 Jun 2014 19:29:07 EST Planks I've been waking up in the morning with a stiff back - it's not because the bed is bad - just thought it was a function of age. Last Monday when I got up, I thought, well why don't you do a plank and see if that helps. Well, lo and behold, it does - I do one every morning when I get out of bed. My back hasn't been hurting at all. What a difference! Mon, 2 Jun 2014 18:58:47 EST Did not do myself any favors this past week.... I guess I was getting very discouraged that despite the added exercise, there has been no change in my weight. I didn't get on the elliptical once all week and bought a full sized bag of corn chips and finished them off in two days.

I had an appointment with my nurse practitioner on Tuesday. I had had my blood drawn on Friday. My overall cholesterol was 229 -- and this is being on meds. My LDL was 110 and my HDL was 108. Now.... anything over 60 on the HDL is great.... she sai... Sun, 17 Feb 2013 18:20:13 EST Driveway and front walk all cleared out!

That's a view of my house and the truck --- the walk was shoveled out by a friend of mine (woke up at 5:30 this morning to the sound of a shovel scraping the snow off my porch!) and my snow plow guy hadn't show up yet. Got everything all cleared out by early afternoon. Snow is so pretty - just wish it didn't cause so much work!

Ended up doing elliptical work as I didn't have all that much ... Sun, 10 Feb 2013 17:50:32 EST Survived the storm! Just need to shovel out now... I thought sure I'd have racked up a slew of fitness minutes shoveling today, but the wind and snow never settled down, so I'm waiting until tomorrow to clean the walk out. So, I just finished 25 minutes on the elliptical.

We had a lot of snow and wind.... the drifts are high and the bare spots are many. So, I'll have to shovel out the two foot drift in front of the door and then the four or more foot drift at the end of the front walk. Everything else in between is bare. Strange... Sat, 9 Feb 2013 19:25:59 EST Tucked in and waiting for the storm! Stayed home from work today in anticipation of the storm. It snowed this morning - but it was light, fluffy snow - easy to take care of. Walked down to the hospital first thing to have blood taken. I have a doctor's appointment on Tuesday to go over my cholesterol readings. Then I went to the dump, because there's no way I'd ever think about going tomorrow. Stopped in at the bank and the post office too. Got a call from my dentist saying I could come in an hour early for my cleaning. ... Fri, 8 Feb 2013 21:58:27 EST Will have to hunker down in a couple of days! Right now, the weather folks are predicting a huge storm on Friday/Saturday. Well, it might be a huge storm... and then again, it might not be all that huge. Just as long as it takes this really, really cold weather away, I'll be happy.

In another to the questions about my improved eyesight -- no, I didn't have any surgery. From what my eye doctor told me, it's not all that unusual for the long distance sight to improve. I haven't really done anything different. Of course, I... Wed, 6 Feb 2013 19:45:52 EST Eyes are fine Had a checkup with the eye doctor today. My long range vision has improved so the top part of my glasses aren't doing me any good. The lower part, the reading part, could be tweaked a little, but it's really not necessary yet. My doctor suggested I go to Reny's or the pharmacy and pick up a pair of $5 reading glasses and see if I like those. I'm not sure I will -- just think I'd be constantly wondering where I put them when I wanted to read. Otherwise, I could get some new ones -- I hav... Mon, 4 Feb 2013 20:54:20 EST Ignoring the Super bowl tonight! Since the Patriots aren't playing and neither the 49ers or the Ravens have any meaning to me, I'm ignoring the game tonight. Reduced to watching a Golden Girls marathon on the Hallmark Channel!

Took a walk this morning - so didn't bother with the elliptical tonight. It was a bit chilly but not horribly cold. We got a little bit of snow last night - the kind you can sweep off the walk. Forgot to watch the news tonight to see what if we're getting any snow tonight. Still wouldn'... Sun, 3 Feb 2013 19:37:34 EST Stocked up with yarn! Downtown Belfast was having a February thaw sale today -- I tried the furniture store, looking for a table to put next to my stove - alas no luck. But I did have fun at the yarn store - everything was 20% off -- got some new needles, markers and several skeins of yarn. I like to make hats to give to our Rotary Club's 100 Fund, whic provides warm clothing, hats mittens and toys to area needy children each Christmas. I've got three done - my goal is 15... and I think I have plenty of yarn to... Sat, 2 Feb 2013 19:33:33 EST Going to be a month of doctor appointments! I just looked at my calendar and saw that I have an appointment with my eye doctor, an appointment with my dentist, an appointment with an eye specialist and an appointment with my regular doctor. And this is all in the first two weeks of February! YIKES -- well, I guess it's good to get it all out of the way in a short space of time. Then I can wait until June/July for the second batch of the year.

Haven't been doing terrific with resuming the exercising, but have done someth... Fri, 1 Feb 2013 21:10:01 EST working my way back..... Have done the elliptical twice this week - 25 minutes each time. There are two basketball games this week, and that messes up my normal evening routine... but it's fun to get out and support the local high school kids. (Our boys team plays a very quick - athletic game --- tires me out just watching them! ...wonder if that counts towards exercise at all??? Ha!)

Strange weather week - cold, cold -- now warm, warm.... and will be cold, cold again. Love winter in Maine! Wed, 30 Jan 2013 20:06:06 EST Ah, yes, the slippery slope...... You are all right - once you stop exercising, it's hard to get back on track! Despite my promises to myself to exercise this weekend, it didn't happen. Whoops..... I forget what happened yesterday, but today was Pies on Parade day in Rockland.

Well, I did get some walking in going from venue to venue, but I'm sure the calorie count of the sampling was far above the calories expended! However, it was for a good cause. All proceeds went to the area food pantry - one of the lad... Sun, 27 Jan 2013 20:27:09 EST Fell off the train for a few days.... I just haven't felt like exercising the past few days.... this will be the third day I've missed. Just am so tired.. and that, coupled with not seeing any weight loss is discouraging. So, am giving myself a few days to whine about it and will start back up over the weekend.

Had a doctor's visit at the oncologist today. There's some new protocol that even if you've passed your five year mark with a clean bill of health, the oncologist's office still wants you to come back for som... Thu, 24 Jan 2013 20:52:21 EST Snow tomorrow? Not sure if there's going to be snow tomorrow morning or not .... but wouldn't mind if it did, in all reality. Got some projects I wouldn't mind doing if I had to stay home!

Did 35 minutes on the elliptical tonight.

Had a visit from a couple former employees today. Was shocked to hear that one had had a heart attack last week .... he's only 42 years old! The doctor said that the attack was caused by his smoking. I knew smoking was bad (and I have never, ever smoked ... Mon, 21 Jan 2013 21:15:57 EST It was warmer than I expected this weekend I don't know why I thought it was going to be very cold this weekend, but fortunately it wasn't. Went out for walks both Saturday and Sunday. Yesterday's was the full hour and today was only 40 minutes. But I did get outside! I was baking a cake - it was going to take 90 minutes to bake, so I didn't want to take a chance that I wouldn't get home in time before it was done. I actually could have gone the full hour.. but didn't dare. ... the cake came out pretty good. Sadly, it ... Sun, 20 Jan 2013 22:01:51 EST Ready for the weekend! OK - day off from exercising yesterday - back on track today. Did 35 minutes on the elliptical. Too cold to be outside for a walk. It might be better tomorrow - will have to decide then what to do for exercising.

My trick of reading before bedtime instead of playing solitaire on the Kindle didn't guarantee a super good night of sleep last night. I did fall asleep fairly easily but woke up an hour or so earlier than I wanted. I think part is that the furnace is coming on more... Fri, 18 Jan 2013 19:47:40 EST It's getting colder and colder After 50 degree weather at the beginning of the week, we're going to be subject to really cold weather this weekend. Was hoping to walk outside over the weekend, but that may be put on hold.

Took the night off from exercising. Went to a basketball game at the high school. Our girls played very poorly and lost by seven or so points. I guess everyone has a night like that.

Slept well last night, which is unusual. And I think I proved the point about not using the... Thu, 17 Jan 2013 21:15:27 EST Snowy Day = Afternoon Off! It's nice working in a family business --- if the traveling is dicey, it's not a problem to leave work early. The older I get, the less I like to drive when the roads are not good. Came back to Belfast for Rotary at noon time and just stayed here. Spent the afternoon getting a lot of my Rotary records updated, so felt like I accomplished something worthwhile.

Did 35 minutes on the elliptical tonight. Didn't pick up new batteries, so used the countdown timer on the stove. Wed, 16 Jan 2013 20:19:24 EST Best way to time a workout? My elliptical has a built-in clock which keeps track of how many minutes I've exercised. Tonight the batteries were dead, so I put 35 minutes on the timer on my stove (which I can see from where I exercise). So one version goes up as I exercise and the other counts down until I'm finished. ... I'm debating in my mind which is the better incentive. On the one hand, if the timer goes up, then if I'm feeling ambitious or it's going easier than I expected, it's easier (mentally) to do more th... Tue, 15 Jan 2013 20:06:15 EST Beginning of the week.... Had a board meeting after work, so got home late. Did 35 minutes on the elliptical. Doing laundry because I forgot to do it yesterday. Aren't Mondays wonderful?!! Mon, 14 Jan 2013 21:11:56 EST Love those Patriots! Got my fill of playoff football this weekend! Was sorry to see the Seahawks lose today, but wow, what a game that was. And of course, loved watching the Patriots beat the Texans.

Went for a walk this morning - the tide was still higher than usual and I did remember to take the camera. (of course, haven't downloaded the pictures yet.... but I do have proof! .... also, saw my old harvest gold range sitting forlornly behind the store where I bought the new one.) Treyone --- not ... Sun, 13 Jan 2013 22:11:21 EST Lazy Saturday Haven't really accomplished much today - regular chores of going to the dump and doing my grocery shopping. Did take an hour's walk this morning. The tide was exceptionally high today. And of course, I had forgotten to take my camera. (the skies were grey and the snow was dirty - didn't seem like there'd be much to photograph!) I'll try to remember to go out tomorrow around high tide with my camera and hope that the tide is still higher than normal.
Sat, 12 Jan 2013 20:13:58 EST Movie night and some exercise too! I'd made plans to go to the movies tonight, so had to be efficient when I got home from work to squeeze some exercise in. I did 20 minutes on the elliptical - not my usual amount of time, but figured it was better than not doing anything at all. I made sure I took exact change to the theater so I wouldn't have any money to buy snacks.

Pat, I did reheat my dinner in the microwave. I think the problem was there was very little sauce in the dish. By the time it was refrigerated,... Thu, 10 Jan 2013 22:10:56 EST The new stove is here! My new stove was delivered today. I haven't done much more than look at it so's so pretty - who wants to mess it up?? I'm sure that this weekend it'll get a good workout, though. Looking forward to being able to clean spillovers easily and to have it level. My old one hadn't been leveled and cakes were apt to be taller on one side and when heating up oil in a pan, it always pooled down on one side. I think I'll just look at it for a day or two and enjoy!

Treyone - t... Wed, 9 Jan 2013 21:01:51 EST Basketball games are not good for me! Went to a high school basketball game tonight - as much fun as the games are, they're not good for my exercising schedule. By the time I have supper, it's time to head over to the high school and by the time I get home, it's too late to exercise. But even so, the games are fun and it's good to get out instead of staying home every evening. ... at least last night, I did get 30 minutes in on the elliptical.

Tried a new recipe last night out of Woman's Day ... or was it Family Cir... Tue, 8 Jan 2013 21:56:00 EST Sunday, Sunday Forgot to blog yesterday! ... busy day - had a pedicure in the morning - ran errands in the afternoon - watched football for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Did 35 minutes on the elliptical while watching football.

Today, I puttered around - trudged through the snow to check out a cottage that I look out for every winter. Although it only amounted to ten minutes of walking total, it should have counted for twice that at least! I was really winded from walking through d... Sun, 6 Jan 2013 20:50:16 EST It's Friday! good start to the weekend After a night off from exercising, I got back on track and did my 35 minutes on the elliptical. As I was doing that, I remembered how hard it was for me when I first started. Getting 5 minutes done was an effort -- then 10 minutes was a stretch -- then getting to 15 took some time. There's still some boredom -- much depends on what is on TV during exercise time. But there is progress with my stamina and that's a good thing.

Platnium755 - isn't it fun to shake things up with da... Fri, 4 Jan 2013 22:04:28 EST A day off from exercising... Went to a couple of basketball games tonight, so decided to forgo doing any exercising. It seems weird to look at my fitness tracker and see so very few minutes for year to date, but will work to get that number higher!

The games were fun -- both the girls and the boys' varsity got to play at home. Both games were very exciting -- the girls lost by just a few points and the boys won by three. You know, there's not much more fun on a winter night than to be at a high school gym w... Thu, 3 Jan 2013 22:21:53 EST Brrrr - good night to stay at home! I had thought about going to the movies tonight, but once I got home from work, I had no desire to go back outside. A college friend called and we had a nice long chat, until she had to go to Weight Watchers to weigh in! I just sent her a Spark People suggestion - hope she might join and use it as a supplement to her WW.

Had considered using today as a rest day, but since I didn't go to the movies, I did the elliptical -- 35 minutes - had planned to do just 25, but it wasn't to... Wed, 2 Jan 2013 20:03:09 EST 2013 is off to a good start! I took two walks today - the first one (35 minutes) was to walk down to the harbor and watch a bunch of crazy people jump into the ocean at noon. This was despite 20 degree weather, wind blowing, and lots of snow along the sides. This is nothing I would ever, ever do, but I do get a charge out of watching other people take the dip.

Later in the afternoon, my walking pal called and we went out for an hour's walk. So, I've begun 2013 with a good start. Tue, 1 Jan 2013 21:19:09 EST Darned internet connection!... lost my blog Had a nice blog written, but my connection died before I could post it and it disappeared!

Quickly - did 30 minutes on the elliptical. Didn't get to go out tonight. Am watching a Matlock marathon.

Happy New Year everyone!

Jill Mon, 31 Dec 2012 21:48:55 EST The lost is found.... drat! I hadn't stepped on the scales since last Wednesday. Was a bit disappointed that the two pounds I had lost had reappeared. Guess two and a half days at my parents' house without much exercise and more than enough Chex mix did me in. Well, will just go back and try again.

We got a lot of snow last night/this morning - seven or eight inches, I'd say. I shoveled out my walk - that was good for 25 minutes. And of course, about 15 minutes after I got that done, the snow plow came ... Sun, 30 Dec 2012 20:50:30 EST Forty minutes on the elliptical! This was a personal best for me. I planned to do my usual 25 minutes, then I was feeling okay, so when on to 30. That felt okay, so pushed to 35... still felt okay, so went onward and upwards to 40 minutes! ... some of it was guilt for eating a half a bag of tortilla chips to go with the homemade salsa that I was given for Christmas..... some was just deciding how far I could push myself!

Finally am back home. My nephews couldn't figure out how to get my laptop to work with my ... Sat, 29 Dec 2012 21:16:48 EST Quick one here... Heading down to Camden tonight to miss the storm.... Dad should be here soon to pick me and the cat up.

Got my 20 minutes in on the elliptical. Wish it had been more, but had a lot to do!

Happy Boxing day to you all!.... hoping my computer will work at my parents' house....

Jill Wed, 26 Dec 2012 16:02:47 EST Thursday's upcoming storm is messing things up Our family is not having Christmas until Friday because my nephew in Vermont works Sunday through Wednesday each week. He was planning to drive over on Thursday, we'd do the tree, dinner and everything on Friday and he'd drive back on Saturday. I would go to my parents' house on Thursday afternoon and come back Saturday morning. Well, this storm is looking to be quite nasty. I image I should go to Camden on Wednesday afternoon to avoid traveling on Thursday. So plans to go to the movies ... Tue, 25 Dec 2012 21:55:05 EST Cookies delivered - all is calm! Got a pan of lasagna cooked and delivered for neighbor's Christmas Eve dinner. Got a gazillion cookies frosted -- and delivered to five friends. Now I'm all tucked in for the night! Just me and the cat.

Did twenty-five minutes on the elliptical - had to push myself to get that done. It was so much easier last night when I was watching a football game... somehow a rerun of How I Met Your Mother doesn't hold the same interest. But I got it done and all is well.

A ... Mon, 24 Dec 2012 20:27:00 EST A comedy of errors today! Pat (Noraspat) had planned to drive over to Belfast with her husband today and meet up with me and MidCoastMoxie here for lunch. Everything was going swimmingly.... the sun was out, the roads were clear.. not a problem. Pat called when she got here and said she'd meet me at a local restaurant. I drove down and was dismayed to see a closed for the holidays sign on the door. It was then I noticed I had forgotten to bring my cell phone with me, but figured they would be right along and we co... Sun, 23 Dec 2012 21:45:03 EST It really doesn't feel like winter at all Was very lazy yesterday about writing a blog - probably because I didn't exercise.... went to a basketball game last night - the home team won, so a good evening!

Today, I did a long walk and included the BIG hill! At the end of the footbridge there is a rather steep hill to climb (there is also an alternative way that does not involve that hill), so today we climbed it. This is the third time in a week! It isn't easy and I'm usually panting by the time we get to the top, but i... Sat, 22 Dec 2012 19:18:14 EST Christmas shopping today.... I took the afternoon off so I could do some Christmas shopping. My mother and I were supposed to go, but since she hasn't been feeling well, I went on my own. I didn't go to Bangor like she and I usually do, but did go to Rockland and then came back home and did some shopping in Belfast. I still have some left to do, but most of it is done. We're not having our family Christmas until the 28th, so I do have some leeway!

I only did 20 minutes on the elliptical today - was tired f... Thu, 20 Dec 2012 20:03:22 EST Back on track... Did my 25 minutes on the elliptical tonight. Things were a little less hectic today. Mom's still having problems... she has an inflamed disc which is what started all of this last month. It hasn't been healing and this may be why she keeps having these panic attacks. She is seeing her doctor tomorrow and I hope he can help with both the disc and the panic attacks.

I hope this is a good trend --- this morning when I stepped on the scale, it finally budged off the 140 mark--- a... Wed, 19 Dec 2012 20:08:32 EST Missed another day Kind of a hectic day, so opted out of exercising tonight.

Went to my first job early to make sure the lady who fell yesterday was doing okay. She was - just a few stitches in her upper lip and she's just got a slight bruise on her hip. Wasn't limiting her mobility though, so that was good. But then....... my father had called her to make sure she was okay and he ended the call abruptly saying that my mother was in trouble. ... she has had a series of panic attacks all month a... Tue, 18 Dec 2012 21:26:19 EST Quite the afternoon! I work part time for a 92 year old woman --- she's still self-sufficient - still drives - makes her own meals, etc.... well, this afternoon, she was at the local seafood store and tripped over a rug. Fortunately, another person that works for her was with her and drove her home. She had cut her upper lip and her hip was sore, so we convinced her (after calling her doctor's office) that she ought to go to the emergency room for an x-ray. I stayed at the house with the dogs and the other gu... Mon, 17 Dec 2012 21:48:11 EST Another brisk walk Hadn't planned to go out for a walk today - was really cold when I walked up to get the Sunday paper. But my walking buddy called later this afternoon, so off we went! We didn't have the wind that we had yesterday, so it wasn't too bad. And for the second day in a row, we walked up the very steep hill that's opposite the walking bridge. I had to go very slowly, but did get to the top. We also checked out the ice rink that the city's recreation department has put up. There were some people... Sun, 16 Dec 2012 20:25:32 EST Brrrrrrrrrrrrr Went out for a long walk this morning... boy, it was cold! The wind was blowing, making the walk even colder! Fortunately, the wind was blowing in our faces on the first part of the walk, and was at our backs on the way home. The tide was very, very high and it made the bay look so very different. I love the bay, no matter what the height of the tide - each level has its own beauty.
Sat, 15 Dec 2012 21:14:09 EST Fridays are my "I don't have to exercise" days, or so it seems! Decided I could take a night off tonight. I did go to a HS basketball game, which was a very exciting one. The boys won by one point, having scored the winning basket with just four seconds to go. Lots and lots of fun!

I won't even go into what my eating habits were today! YIKES! I went out to lunch at a restaurant that make THE best French Fries and I couldn't resist. I didn't have dessert at lunch - instead opted to have the applesauce that came with my meal as my dessert. ... Fri, 14 Dec 2012 22:21:28 EST No one irritated me today --- YEAH!! Well, at least there were no emotional food triggers today!! ... sometimes, though, I look back and wonder if I'm just being a brat when things don't go the way I expected. .. Monday night's meeting - one officer said she wanted to step down, so I badgered someone who had held the office earlier into coming back onto the board. Then the person said she didn't want to step down after all. I was irritated because I got along very well with the previous officer and had looked forward to serv... Thu, 13 Dec 2012 20:27:56 EST My emotional eating trigger It's becoming evident to me that my emotional eating trigger is anger/irritation. Somebody at Rotary irritated me at lunch today and that carried through the afternoon, so tonight I'm craving sweets. (two small cookies and a couple of pieces of chocolate bark....) To counteract that, I did 25 minutes on the elliptical.

My weight is holding steady --- the only consolation is that I haven't gained anything since I've increased my activity level. Wed, 12 Dec 2012 21:44:58 EST First basketball game of the season Went to a HS basketball game tonight - always fun, even if I don't know any of the kids! ... and it's a good two hours that I'm not tempted to snack.

Came home and did twenty minutes on the elliptical. Am snacking right now on warmed up butternut squash. At least it's healthy! Tue, 11 Dec 2012 21:52:42 EST Exercised and now am watching the Pats game! Had a board meeting after work tonight - I was irritated by something that happened there and that carried through to having four cookies for dessert instead of just one. I guess my emotional eating is triggered by being p'o'ed!! So I made certain that I did 20 minutes on the elliptical tonight. Should have done more but I got started late.

One of these days I need to start adding some of the strength exercises. I always enjoyed doing Coach Nicole's 28 day challenges and was ...
