DORI36's SparkPeople Blog DORI36's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Wow! I've lot a total of 52 pounds!!! I can hardly believe it. It took a year of STRUGGLING to take off 30 lbs., but only 2 months to lose the next 22, AND without struggling!!!!! How did I do it? I followed my doc's recommendations regarding foods I have an allergy or sensitivity to. That meant not eating foods such as all meats except chicken, seafood and buffalo; almost all grains except rice (no breads, sob sob but not bad once I got used to it); no dairy except for goat milk/products; no sweets or sugars or sweeteners of any... Sat, 20 Aug 2011 15:05:39 EST Diet is now even more strict!! I saw the doc yesterday, and uncovered some more restrictions...nothing too drastic except for two things:
-It's really hard to find any kind of bread I can have, even the rice breads have some ingredients I should stay away from, at least for now.
-She cut my fruit servings to one a day, and none after dinner. That's the hardest.
I love my fruit. But the sugar in fruit makes my insulin go up, which makes weight loss difficult. I guess that why I lost only 5# the first couple ... Sat, 2 Jul 2011 21:14:10 EST Allergies...........WOW! Last week I found out I have multiple allergies, causing inflammation, which in turn causes pain and makes it hard to lose weight. NO KIDDING! This past week has been an adventure in exploring new ways of cooking and eating.

I cannot have the following:
Beef or any products coming from beef, i.e., dairy
Pork, lamb, wild meat
Wheat or spelt or anything containing them
Oils or fats except for canola and sesame
Sweeteners of any kind
Starchy veggies incl... Thu, 23 Jun 2011 22:08:51 EST Low GI continues to work! I'm still losing, between one and two pounds a week, steadily and without feeling deprived. I found that my body just won't lose weight at the calories recommended by SP, so I cut them down a little bit (about 130 a day). My metabolism is SO slow, and has been slowing down ever since my late 30's. Now, more than 35 years later, I've just accepted that I can't consume as many calories as other people, and with that acceptance comes ... what??? ....maybe the motivation to eat fewer calories, sm... Sun, 11 Jul 2010 09:21:38 EST Low GI is working Less than 3 weeks on the low glycemic diet and I've lost 8 lbs. I'm thrilled. But I can see it's slowing down a little bit, and that means I have to watch portion sizes a little more closely. Lots of eating out during the last maybe that's the reason it's slowing down. It's hard to put together a LGI meal when it's a potluck and everyone brings high GI foods. I have a good friend who is finally learning I simply can't eat sugar/white flour/high fat....I'm so happy my fasting glucos... Sat, 19 Jun 2010 11:43:52 EST A good day, and then I blew it. The day was such a good one....laundry and housework in the a.m., then the gym. Painting with friends in the afternoon. By then I was really tired and drained, so I mixed a drink (actually 2) while cooking supper, and then....arghhhh.....noshed all evening on junk I didn't need, putting me way over the top of calories for the day. Okay, it was the first time in about 10 days -- I guess I should be focusing on those positive days --- and I'm getting back on track again today. But it proved to ... Wed, 10 Mar 2010 11:35:43 EST Finally, I'm back.... I've been gone too long, and after a back problem last week, realized I need to get back on track. I've wasted years, ignoring my own health. What kind of fool am I???? Tue, 2 Mar 2010 12:19:49 EST Cutting Portion Sizes is Working Lost another pound just by cutting portion sizes. Because of all the flu going around, i've cut out the gym too and I really miss it. Tue, 27 Oct 2009 16:04:14 EST Cutting Portion Sizes not so hard I thought cutting back on my portions was going to be un-doable, but I'm finding it's not so hard at all. Instead of a whole sandwich, I have a half of one. Instead of two enchiladas, I have only one. Instead of a small steak, I have 3 oz or less.

My DH's aunt-in-law was very very heavy most of her life, and then in one year (in her 80's) lost a lot of weight. I asked her one day how she did it, and she said she cut all her portions in half, and ate whatever she wanted, except onl... Wed, 21 Oct 2009 12:29:34 EST It's so depressing Between traveling and eating conference food, and a super busy schedule, I end up putting myself last, and I'm so tired by the evening that I sit in front of the TV and nosh all evening long. Gotta stop this!!!! Fri, 25 Sep 2009 12:11:26 EST I just don't feel like being at the computer today It seems I spend way too much time here. I have stacks and stacks of magazines that I haven't read, paintings to finish and new ones to start, books I haven't even opened, past due notices from the library, movies waiting, walks that need to be taken, and I could go on and on and instead, here I sit at the computer..................................
.........

so, BYE for now 24 Tue, 22 Sep 2009 15:22:08 EST Tuesday.....good day, busy but good Spent the morning at the nursing home, and that's always an interesting time. Visited with many of the residents.

Had a quick lunch, then off to the gym for 20 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes on the weight machines. I noticed that I'm going faster on the cardio than I did before walking in the hills. It may be tiring, and I do get out of breath walking and climbing the slopes, but I can tell the difference in my endurance. Rain is predicted for tomorrow, but if it holds off, I'm ... Tue, 8 Sep 2009 19:00:22 EST Another Hike......... I guess I'll have to ease up a little bit on this hiking I was all tuckered out after 30 minutes. I mean the kind of weak, sore muscles tuckered out. Tomorrow I'll do 20 minutes of intervals (12 seconds easy 8 seconds fast as possible for entire 20 minutes) on a stationary bike plus 20 minutes on the weight machines. The day after, I'll try another trek.

I find that using my new trekking poles really takes the pain out of my back while walking. 224 <B... Mon, 7 Sep 2009 16:58:45 EST Just back from a hike DH and I just came back from a hike in the foothills. I don't have a lot of stamina climbing hills at my age/weight and the altitude doesn't help. Puffing going up, using muscles in the front of my thighs I didn't know I had coming down 24

BUT we were up there hiking and taking pictures for 45 minutes 224 and I feel good now! I'm glad the foothill parking lots are as close as 5 minutes away in the car. Sun, 6 Sep 2009 13:53:44 EST So Far This Week, holding even.............. No gain, no loss so far. Not a bad week, just crazy busy so I tend to not focus enough, and today....well, lunch out with the girls (a BLT and cup of fresh fruit), the kids across the street are selling lemonade and sugar cookies (YIKES!) but can't refuse them and their entrepreneurial spirit, and then tonight we're going out to dinner at a friend's home. Tomorrow, it will have to be back on track!!! Some days seem so easy, some seem so hard and out of control!

Sat, 29 Aug 2009 18:41:02 EST Portion Sizes I gained a pound this week, and wondered why.....then I looked up "serving sizes" and was shocked to see I was eating way too much. I was counting a cup of fruit as one serving, instead of 1/2 cup. I wonder how accurate nutrition in the list of foods is when it calculates a "serving" instead of a measurable amount. Oh boy....back to the drawing board.

230 Mon, 24 Aug 2009 12:06:53 EST Most of the way through the week The numbers show I've been mostly on track this week, but I "feel" heavy. Why is that??? I'm afraid to get on the scale....I'll put it off until at least Monday, maybe longer.

Having guests for dinner tonight, so I've planned a Greek dinner: Greek shrimp with tomatoes and feta, Greek salad, brown rice and whole wheat bread for those who want it; ice cream and strawberries and blueberries for dessert. Big meal, but it fits into the food plan except lacking in fiber. I have hard tim... Sat, 22 Aug 2009 11:58:17 EST Stay focused, stay focused, stay focused........... Just talking to myself. As I said a few days ago, this is a crazy, hectic week and I'm having a hard time staying focused, and when that happens I go over the maximum calories a bit...typically 50 - 110 or so a day. 39

I've been working hard at updating my website and blog, painting, fixing my problem paintings, and now I have to do one more small fix and then enter three small paintings into an exhibit and hope they get accepted. I won't know for another month! The tensi... Thu, 20 Aug 2009 13:56:41 EST Beginning of Week 2 -- Challenges ahead This is going to be a busy week....Chiropractor appt, visit nursing home and write reports, workouts at the gym, try out my brand new trekking poles (hope my back cooperates), guests for dinner two nights this week, painting, entering three paintings into an exhibit and hope at least one gets accepted --- well, that's just the beginning.

I feel like I must be slowing down. I was reading an article yesterday in INTERNATIONAL ARTIST about a woman in NYC and what her week was like, a... Mon, 17 Aug 2009 09:14:49 EST Day 7 - Reporting on the first full week, Have to work at this harder I just calculated all the calories for the week, and found out that I went over the recommended calories by 160 FOR THE WEEK. Some days Under, some days Over. The days I went over was not because of what I ate to fill me up, but what I ate after I was full!!!

Analyzing it, those couple of cocktails a couple of times during the week and eating in front of the TV after dinner amounted to a total of 1944 absolutely unnecessary and fattening calories for the week!!!! That's more than ... Sun, 16 Aug 2009 12:23:09 EST Day 6 - Gettin' Easier I almost can't believe it, but this is getting easier. I logged what I plan to eat all day....what I thought was a "typical" day for me....and I'm way under on calories, etc., and have to figure out how to get more in! Skipping my pre-dinner cocktail(s) is a big part of it. But, we eat a little earlier than we were, and I suck on my water bottle...

246

And my energy level is way better, too! Wow!

Meanwhile, we are off to an "antique" camper show....... Sat, 15 Aug 2009 15:45:42 EST Day 4 -- Yesterday was a good is even better Yesterday ended on a high note...stayed within my plan all day.
I took a peek at the scale this morning....looks like by the end of the week I'll show a loss if I keep this up.
This a.m. I got a haircut, went to see the master gardeners about the sickly tomato plants, fixed lunch, tried on my new NB shoes, and now I'm off to the gym. When I get home I'll paint for a while and try to finish this small painting. So far it's a struggle....but I will overcome 246 Wed, 12 Aug 2009 15:51:04 EST Day 3 -- Blood Sugar Down this Morning!!!! It's hard to believe, but after only two days faithfully following this program, my blood sugar is down 30 POINTS!!!! Is this a fluke, or will it continue? I haven't weighed myself yet, waiting for Day 7, but already I'm feeling so much better.

Busy day coming up, with a meeting at the nursing home this morning and visits with some of the residents. Then lunch with the Mud Bunch (a bunch of potters) at a Mexican restaurant. I'll have to think about what will work for me....probably... Tue, 11 Aug 2009 09:33:23 EST Another Good Day A great day today. I stayed within my nutrition goals -- well, I had a little too much fiber (3 gr) and that's one area I usually struggle with. Otherwise, I stayed on track all day, exercised for 40 minutes cardio and weights, drank my fluids and then some. Hooray for a successful DAY 2!!

224 Mon, 10 Aug 2009 21:13:25 EST Getting Into the Program..... I haven't been following the program here since I joined months ago, and I was doing WW instead. Somehow that just doesn't work for me. I need something even more structured I think. I started using SP this past week, and LOVE the way it tracks everything for me, and lets me know where I stand at any moment. It's so much easier. The first few days were SHOCKING to discover how much I was eating. Now I'm starting to get into the swing of things here, and I hope to be able to stick with it. Ye... Mon, 10 Aug 2009 11:52:44 EST I'm new here....and amazed!!! I just recently found this site and am absolutely amazed at the depth of what is available -- the tools, the recipes, the people. I'll have to be careful or I'll never get anything else done 246 !!!!!

I intend to spend most of today painting...I'm doing a pastel of a southwest monsoon in the evening. It's 3/4 done....just have to fix the clouds. (For those who are not familiar with the term, here in the southwest, a monsoon is a sudden and intense rain storm. It rains on m...
