DMURPH409's SparkPeople Blog DMURPH409's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Not much left to do... Well, lots of good news this week. First of all, ALL my tests came back normal. EGD, Spirometry, CT Scan, all good. Very happy about that. I had the CT scan since my blood pressures were off from arm to arm. Still don't know why, but at least I know that there's nothing seriously wrong with me.

I have my last lifeskills class on Tuesday, I'll be going for the big blood draw too before I go to work. I need that blood work before I goto the doc on the 22nd for a surgical cleara... Sat, 12 Jul 2014 16:23:37 EST Getting closer... So this week was pretty good. I went to the pulmonologist and everything went well there. I have a spirometry test that I need to do this coming week and I don't anticipate it to be bad. I may find out that I have asthma and it will just add another medication and another thing on my medical chart.

I also had my EGD done this week, just yesterday. That was some freaky stuff. I had my father in law take me to my appointment and just as we got on the expressway, we saw 3 helicop... Sat, 28 Jun 2014 14:12:32 EST Uh oh... Not a whole lot of excitement this week. I did go see the cardiologist though. I had a quick EKG taken which was a piece of cake. My blood pressure was higher than it has been in a month. It was 160/90 where it had been around 140/80. The cardiologist took my bp in my other arm only to find that it was 190/90 there.

That's no Bueno. She said that going forward I need to request the right arm for my bp whenever it's taken. She also said I could have a partial blockage somew... Sat, 21 Jun 2014 13:02:49 EST Getting it done... Ok, it's been about 2 weeks since I last wrote but things are going along well. I've had my psych consult today and met with one of the docs. I also got a work order for what will feel like about 50% of my blood. I thought the doc was handing me some info on the surgery etc., and it was like 8 pages of blood work. Yikes! Better stock up on the water for that one.

I have also had an xray done, and finally got an appointment with a pulmonologist, and I've scheduled my endoscopy... Thu, 12 Jun 2014 18:44:00 EST Making Progress I've had a busy week this week. I had my blood work done on Tuesday. I also this week managed to schedule my visit with my cardiologist, scheduled my lifestyles classes, registered to meet with the psychologist and the nurse practitioner, and I have a call in to my regular physician to find out about a pulmonologist consult. I already have a CPAP machine so I don't know what else they'll need to do.

I am still waiting for a call from the hospital for the endoscopy. I'll give th... Sat, 31 May 2014 09:21:12 EST The Process has Begun!! So I met with the surgeon on Wednesday and he agreed that this would be a good thing. Of course he did, he wants the money! 334 We reviewed my pamphlet and he asked a few more questions. Some of which were included in the thing I filled out so it was a little annoying, but not too bad.

He took me in an exam room and gave me a quick once over, listened to my breathing and heart, made sure I had good distal pulses, really exciting stuff. He then took me back to his ... Sat, 24 May 2014 10:49:36 EST Bariatric Surgery Seminar Well, last night I attended the Bariatric Surgery Seminar at my local hospital. This was the 2nd time that I've attended one. I also went to one about 2 years ago but never followed through with the rest of the program.

The surgeon that did the seminar was the surgeon that I want to do my sleeve so it was good to be able to see his demeanor. He tried to introduce a little humor into a very serious situation and I enjoyed it. Some of the information that he provided was slightly... Wed, 21 May 2014 06:35:31 EST The quest to be sleeved!! Well, well, well... I've been away for about 2 years now. I've been a member for around 4. I've lost some weight, gained some weight, but I'm still here. I had thought about deleting my account completely and starting all over again, from scratch. I decided not to.

I felt that if I did it would be like saying that these last couple years didn't happen, like the efforts that i made were worthless. Granted I may have not lost the weight I hoped I would, but it all becomes part o... Sat, 17 May 2014 13:13:25 EST Top 10 things to look forward to when I reach my goal weight... Top 10 things to look forward to when I reach my goal weight...

Ok, so a friend of mine said that I hadn't blogged in a while which is true so here's my entry for today.

It's a silly top 10 list and I hope you get a kick out of it!

10) Taking a shower will no longer be an aerobic activity.
9) I'll actually be able to see my belly button.
8) My toes will finally be able to get some sun!
7) I won't be able to be a wind screen for my daughter... Mon, 27 Feb 2012 12:34:51 EST A cheap piece of meat... Ok... so I was REALLY pi$$ed today when I weighed myself and found that I gained like 2 pounds. I've been watching what I eat, tracking all of it, busting my ass in the gym getting like almost an hour of cardio a day and for what?? Not just a flat week, but a gain.

I'll admit my first thought was pick up the scale and throw it out the front door, but I refrained.

I got dressed, drove to the gym and put my big behind on the Arc, yes... the Arc. My arch enemy. I busted... Sat, 28 Jan 2012 09:49:37 EST The Arc Strikes Back... A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away...

I wrote a blog about the ARC machine at Planet Fitness. I confirmed that it was brutal and even possibly evil. Placed here by the evil Lord Vader to torture all of us on a path to become fit.

Well, I tried the Arc again today. This time I used the *big boy* machine that uses the arms as well as the legs. I managed to do 25 minutes and it was every bit as torturous of a machine as the one without the arms was... and then s... Thu, 26 Jan 2012 07:01:58 EST The ARC is evil!!!! Ok, so up until today I thought that the ARC was a good thing. Noah built it, animals 2 x 2, big flood, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Today I found out that the arc is NOT good but EVIL!!! I've seen people at Planet Fitness using it and they were sweating like nobody's business. For anyone that doesn't know what it is, it's sort of like an elliptical machine but even more sinister. Why??? Because it can emulate my arch enemy.... stairs! In a previous club I belonged to they had an ac... Fri, 20 Jan 2012 07:37:39 EST Awesome article!!!

ion_articles.asp?id=1366

This article was awesome (long, but awesome)! It really seemed to describe me to a tee.

I definitely have a MAJOR fatitude problem. But at least now I can work on changing it!

Enjoy!! Thu, 12 Jan 2012 06:57:02 EST My first outdoor walk this year... So today I went out and walked at Glasgow Park and it's the first time I've walked (for fitness) in quite a while. The loop is about 2.4 miles and the terrain has some small hills with the exception of the final stretch. Right at the end you'll find what I call "The Hill from Hell." It's pretty steep and when you're trying to finish up your walk the thought of tackling it is something I tried to avoid.

It was a beautiful day today although a little windy. I started strong and w... Sat, 7 Jan 2012 14:55:15 EST A little inspiration for the new year... Here's a little story I found on the internet, thought it might inspire others as it did me. As I inched my way up the path, I felt out of breath and had to turn back.
I tried to climb the mountain today. But, It was so hot outside, I thought I had better stay in my nice air-conditioned house and rest up for tomorrow's attempt.
I tried to climb the mountain today. On my journey, darkness started ... Mon, 2 Jan 2012 13:23:00 EST I'm back!! Starting over... Well, I've been pretty non-existent here for the last 3 months or so. I was very unmotivated and as a result I gained about 20 pounds back. So if I do the math that's about 6 pounds a month. Pretty sad!

On a good note though, my wife and I have started WW and I think that it will be good for both of us.

I got a recumbent bike for Christmas and I have started to use it daily. I'm trying to get around 30 minutes or so each day for now. I can't wait until the weathe... Tue, 18 Jan 2011 12:39:47 EST Wk 27 Weigh In A gain of about 2 pounds. Not liking this at all.

I don't have anyone else to blame but myself. I haven't done ANY exercise in a few weeks. I haven't been eating on plan at all. I tried to kind of self moderate without being anal retentive and logging what I eat, but I can see that I still have no self control and I'm like a druggie being thrown into a room filled with their drug of choice. My drug of choice is food!

I REALLY need to get myself back on track and get... Wed, 20 Oct 2010 08:12:25 EST Wk 26 Weigh In Down two tenths of a pound. Don't have much more to say at this point!!!! Aggravated!!! Wed, 13 Oct 2010 07:32:08 EST I jogged my 1st mile!!! I'm sooooo proud of myself! I set out today to do something that I felt was impossible... I actually jogged an entire mile for the first time in about 20 years!

Granted I was far from an olympic pace (12 min, 13 sec) but I did the whole thing without walking at all.

I can definitely do this!! Sat, 9 Oct 2010 07:26:04 EST Wk 25 Weigh In I'm down another 1.8 this week! Can't complain at all since I haven't really been doing much in the way of exercise. I've just been sticking to my calories and that's it!

I go back to my doctor today for a follow up visit and the last time I was there I weighed around 242 and now I'm at 225... down 17 pounds in about 3 months. Not bad... not where I'd like to be, but not bad at all.

I think my biggest issue currently is getting exercise. I'm not really too comfortabl... Wed, 6 Oct 2010 07:27:57 EST Wk 24 Weigh In I was quite surprised today when I weighed in. I lost 3 pounds this week! Woo-hoo!! On a scary side note... I have 66.6 pounds left to goal. Nothing like having the number of the beast as the number of pounds to go! Sheesh! Say a few Hail Mary's for me, huh?

I have been more motivated the last week than I had been the previous 4 or 5 weeks and I'm hoping that I'm back on track. I only walked/ran 1 day so I need to get the exercise ramped back up.

My family is comi... Wed, 29 Sep 2010 05:53:52 EST Great Weekend!! Had a great weekend this week! Saturday I took Mikayla to the local Build-a-Bear at the mall b/c they were promoting some new Star Wars costumes and a special edition Star Wars bear. Part of that promotion was that they had some characters there from Star Wars.

All week my daughter was wondering who they were going to have there and if they were going to have Darth Vader. The kid LOVES Darth Vader. She's 5 but she's quite the fan. I told her I wasn't sure who they were going to... Mon, 27 Sep 2010 06:59:39 EST 100 things about me...
1. I've been at eating machine the last week. I haven't logged anything at all... no walking except for on Saturday.

I watched Biggest Loser last night hoping that it would motivate me to get back on plan and at the time I was all pumped up, got up this morning and instead of exercising, I watched tv. Great start jackass!

We'll have to see how the calories go today. Not only am I going to fail my goal of 200 by December... Wed, 22 Sep 2010 05:52:48 EST What I've accomplished... Ok, so the last few weeks I've been pretty unhappy with my results. I'll admit, it's my own fault. I don't have anybody to blame but me. I didn't stick with my nutritional plans, I didn't exercise like I was and I was giving in to temptation and grazing when I was previously able to say no and walk away.

I had come pretty close to packing it in and giving up but thanks to the support from you guys I'm still gonna keep on going. I can't count how many people's pages/blogs I've l... Fri, 17 Sep 2010 07:57:44 EST Wk 22 Weigh In Hey, what do you know... another flat week!! It has been a very stressful week. Daughter got sick and we had her in the ER at AI Dupont only to be told that she had a virus. That went away in like 2 days.

Then we had her back at the Dr. on Friday and Saturday b/c now she had a runny nose and was coughing. She has asthma as well so when she starts to cough, we don't mess around we get her tush to the doctor. Dr. said it was only allergies. So she's been on like 3 medications f... Wed, 15 Sep 2010 06:00:16 EST September 11th.... It's 9 years later and I remember it like it was yesterday...

I woke up for work like I did every other day and checked my pager and found that there was a message about a plane crashing into the World Trade Center in NYC. I turned on the news and started watching the broadcasts and was shocked by what I saw.

I heard mention that it was a terrorist attack and that there was concern over how many other flights may have been hijacked. I was watching the live news broadca... Fri, 10 Sep 2010 06:23:16 EST Spreading the Spark!!! Ok, so I was getting some hot water today for my oatmeal at work and a co-worker came in and said hello. Then she said and you're on... what diet??!? I proudly said that it was a free website called I told her that it's been mentioned on several news broadcasts and that there are a lot of people doing very well with the program.

I told her how easy the site was to use and that there are security options if you don't want anyone to see your information.
<BR... Wed, 8 Sep 2010 07:38:01 EST Wk 21 Weigh In I'm down 1.8 this week. I'll take it! It's really been a struggle this week. I'm still having issues with not going back to the pots and eating more food.

I have to come to grips with the fact that food is something that your body needs to stay functioning, it's not a hobby!

Now I have sort of an idea what an addict feels like when they are battling something, it's not easy at all. But some of the best things in life aren't easy. Raising a child isn't easy, but it's... Wed, 8 Sep 2010 05:47:45 EST Wk 20 Weigh In I only lost .6 pounds... that's point 6. Ugh!!! The last few weeks have really been a struggle. Starting to get very frustrated.

The only option I have is to work harder. I'll have to try walking every day instead of every other.

I realize that it's going to take a long time to get to my goal and I'm ok with that. I have a short term goal of 200 by December and if I keep having bad weeks, I'm not going to make it and that would REALLY bother me. I'm only 29 pounds a... Wed, 1 Sep 2010 05:25:40 EST Walk to Chicago Update!! Today I added another 3 miles to my virtual 'Walk to Chicago' so I'm currently at a total of 86.66 mile. I've got another 700 or so to go, but I'll get there eventually!!

Currently I'm just outside of Crestlawn Cemetery heading West on Route 70. I kind of like this virtual walk thing... gives me a cool way to motivate myself to keep on walking just to see where my next end point is going to be.

If anyone out there is walking, running, or heck even crawling, give it a t... Thu, 26 Aug 2010 06:12:19 EST Wk 19 Weigh In Good bye 230's, and hello 220's!! I broke (barely) into the 220's today and that's the lightest I've been in about 5 years. I was down to 209 about 5 years ago before our daughter was born. The wife and I were doing weight watchers and we were loving it!. Once we found out she was pregnant, it was all over! She had cravings for mexican food like every other day, and I gotta tell ya, I wasn't going to say no to mexican food. Soooo.... all the weight came back that I lost (56 pounds) plus... Wed, 25 Aug 2010 05:50:20 EST Wk 18 Weigh In I had another flat week this week. I'm getting a little frustrated! I have nobody to blame but myself as I've been really struggling to not grab a little of this or a little of that. Those little nibbles of this or that add up! I may end up walking every day instead of every other day to try and kick start my progress. I can still make my goal of 200 by December if I average 1.9 pounds per week. I know I can do it. It's time for me to refocus and be as strong as I was in week 1.
... Wed, 18 Aug 2010 05:36:33 EST New pics!! I just updated my progress pictures... pretty happy with the results. I can definitely tell the difference between my first week and this week. I also found a pic taken almost a year ago in September on my daughter's first day of pre-school. I put it side by side with the pic I took today. I can't believe the difference! My face seems like it just melted away! Pics like this will definitely keep me going. What do you guys think? Can you tell I lost almost 40 pounds??

<img ... Sun, 15 Aug 2010 16:09:54 EST A little about me... A to Z! Fri, 13 Aug 2010 12:36:53 EST Wk 17 Weigh In Well, I ate my Pizzeria Uno Pizza and then a few days later had an ooey gooey cheesesteak and I still lost 3 pounds! Just goes to show that you CAN splurge a little here and there without sabotaging your weight loss goals.

I started walking this week and I've decided to walk inside using a dvd for now. It had been so long since I last walked that it's stayed dark. It's now 6am and it's about as light as it used to be at 515.

I don't mind too much staying inside though... Wed, 11 Aug 2010 06:06:21 EST "Walking to Chicago" I decided today that a good way to motivate me to walk as much as possible would be to try and walk enough miles that would equate to walking to Chicago. So far I've tracked about 67 miles and I've got about 700 more or so to go.

I'm also going to try and plot my progress with the help of Google Maps. I saved my first one and uploaded it to my page as the first photo. If you click on it you'll see just how far I've walked so far. I started in Bear, De, and so far I'm walking ar... Sun, 8 Aug 2010 12:09:28 EST Back in the saddle! First of all I went to the sleep apnea folks yesterday and brought along the memory card from my machine. I was very happy with the results even though I knew that I was more than the 70% compliant. I was 88% compliant and I attribute the days when I wasn't compliant to when I had the nose only mask instead of the full face. I was also told that previous to my treatment I had on average of 12 apneas per hour but with the machine its dropped to .9 per hour. That's point 9. Less than 1 an ... Sat, 7 Aug 2010 08:23:38 EST Wk 16 Weigh In Lost another 2 pounds this week and I'm back on track after a flat week. I'm surprised that I'm still losing even though I haven't done any walking in about a month.

Unfortunately I didn't make it to the lab to get my knee x-rayed. The plan is to get there today to get it done. Hopefully I can get back to walking sooner than later. I can't believe that I'm saying this, but I actually miss it. Only bad thing is that it's now still VERY dark at 515 am. I wouldn't want to wait t... Wed, 4 Aug 2010 05:52:41 EST Wk 15 Weigh In Like I said yesterday, it wasn't going to be a good week. Although I didn't lose anything, I also didn't gain anything. I was on a good streak of 8 weeks in a row with a loss so I'm not going to beat myself up over it.

Just going to get right back in the saddle and keep on trucking! I'm going today to get an xray after work to see what's going on with my knee. I'm hoping it's nothing crazy because I REALLY need to get walking again. If I can't walk like I need to walk to get m... Wed, 28 Jul 2010 05:53:56 EST Living life and loving it! I've been kinda quiet on SP for a few weeks. Recently I had an opportunity to work from home and for some reason I hadn't been involved with SP much. I logged in most of the days and spun the wheel, and I tracked a few of my meals but not all of them. I'm sure that tomorrow's pending weigh in isn't going to be pretty. But ya know what?? I've accepted that the results won't be positive and I'm ok with that. I was back to work on Monday and picked up my daily routine right where I left of... Tue, 27 Jul 2010 07:32:14 EST Wk 14 Weigh In Wow!!! What a week! I lost 3.3 pounds and I haven't been walking at all. I'll take it!!

I went back to the doctor for a follow up visit and he said that my thyroid levels were still off so he bumped my dosage up to 75 mcg from 25. He also said that my blood pressure was much better (132/68) but it's still not quite where he would like it to be so he is keeping my on Avapro but gave me some samples that also include a diuretic. I think between the diuretic and the increase in t... Wed, 21 Jul 2010 06:04:27 EST Wk 13 Weigh In I lost but not much.... I lost 1.7 pounds this week which is something to be proud of, but I was hoping for a little more. I was only about 2 pounds away fro breaking into the 230's and I missed it by .1 stinking pounds so I'll have to wait til next week to see if I break into the 230's range.

I've been pretty light on the exercise this last week or so due to my knee. It was really weird. My knee was a little tender but I decided to give the Walk Away the Pounds 4 mile a try so ... Wed, 14 Jul 2010 06:08:20 EST Wk 12 Weigh In So..... today puts me at about the 3 month mark on my journey to a healthier lifestyle. I lost 1.6 pounds this week which is much better than I thought it was going to be. I ate a fair amount of food on the 4th of July and I really expected to have a gain this week. Maybe the thyroid meds helped me out a little bit!

So total in 12 weeks I've lost 28.2 pounds. That's an average of 2.3 pounds a week which is slightly above the suggested guidelines of 1-2 pounds a week. If I keep... Wed, 7 Jul 2010 05:55:59 EST Listen up body parts!!! Ok, so I've been walking every other day for a few months now and I've been having some trouble with my right knee every once in a while for the last 2 weeks. Monday I should have walked but I didn't b/c my knee was still tender from my 3 mile walk on Saturday.

Today I got up and it was still a little tender so I only walked a mile today. A very s l o w mile which I did more just for the exercise than the time. I walked it in about 17.5 minutes. Normally if I'm walking just a... Tue, 6 Jul 2010 06:11:39 EST CPAP Night 2 Last night was the 2nd night for my CPAP machine. The first night I went to bed around 10 and kept the mask on until about 330. Not too bad for the first night!

I had cut the grass earlier that day so I was having allergy issues and I ended up sleeping with my mouth open for some of the night but at least I kept the mask on for most of the night. I did feel better in the morning though so it must have helped at least a little bit!

So last night was much better! I ... Sun, 4 Jul 2010 05:13:17 EST Week 11 Weigh In I lost another 3.6 pounds this week! Woo hoo!!! Just call me butter... cuz I'm on a roll!!

I haven't been doing anything differently, I've been staying within my calorie range and if I'm under, I'm under by a small amount, not 800 calories or anything crazy like that. I'm still walking 2 miles every other day. If it's a weekend day, then I walk 3 miles instead. I've thought about making it 4 on the weekend and not pushing the speed as much until I get a feel for how to pace my... Wed, 30 Jun 2010 06:14:29 EST New photo uploaded! I decided that I would start taking photos each month to see if I notice any progress. I just added today's photo. I'm about 9 pounds lighter than I was last month so I'm happy about that.

I can't really see much of a difference from the front on photo, but I can see a difference from the side view photo. That fat around my stomach is just a melting away! You can check out the photos on my main page. Definitely makes me want to keep on going so I can see what next month's phot... Sun, 27 Jun 2010 12:03:14 EST Sleep Apnea Study Part 2 So last night I had the 2nd part of my sleep study where they hooked my up to all the monitors again, and then fitted me with a mask that covered my nose. Then they attached it to a CPAP machine which basically blows air into my nose in order to prevent my airway from collapsing which would then in turn cause me to stop breathing.

I gotta say that it wasn't THAT uncomfortable. Of course all the wires were a pain in the neck, but the mask itself wasn't bad. I'm normally a mouth b... Thu, 24 Jun 2010 07:52:09 EST Week 10 Weigh In I've made it to week 10... Woo Hoo!!! I'm down to 246.8 this week so that's about 2 pounds from the previous week. I'm VERY happy with my results so far. To date, in 10 weeks I've lost a total of 23.2 pounds. That's slightly above the average of 2 pounds a week. I don't want to get too much higher than that since it wouldn't be healthy so I'll shoot to stay on track.

Right now, I'm ahead of plan to make it to 200 by my birthday. I REALLY hope that I get to that goal. It woul... Wed, 23 Jun 2010 06:08:02 EST
