Flat ride around Alameda and Bay Farm Island, but the wind made it like climbing hills, but you can't see "the hills" so it's relaly annoying!

Here is a picture of me at the windiest part on Bay Farm Island with San Francisco in the background.

It was so windy that the kite surfers were out in droves at Crown Memorial Beach in Alameda -- I counted 21 in the water and at least as many on shore ... Fri, 25 May 2012 00:41:12 EST Let the strength training begin! My garage is only 7' tall, so this gym barely fit -- 1/2" to spare:

Ya gotta love Craigslist -- I got this gym for $250 with an additional $70 delivery and set-up by the previous owner. It was like $1400 new and is in great shape. It's an MS-2000 by MultiSports. Given how much it is to join and go to a gym, and my track record of actually going to a gym, it's way cheaper to have my own equipment. I also ... Sat, 5 May 2012 18:56:22 EST Spring flowers! Or, as a toddler I once knew used to say, "fobbies."

By the way, many of these were taken April 29 on the "Bay Friendly Garden Tour" (no pesticides or artificial fertilizers allowed in these gardens!) and some from my walk in Piedmont on the 30th.

<... Tue, 1 May 2012 16:26:11 EST Another awesome Spring hike in the Bay Area! My friend and I walked from Alpine Lake/Dam up the Cataract Trail to some other trails to the ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Stinson Beach/Bolinas. There was about 1300' elevation gain in 2.6 miles! Total of about 5.2 miles. And the best part was I burned 1047 calories!

The lake is near the town of Fairfax in Marin County. Back in the 1990s when I lived in Marin and used to ride my bikes about 100 miles a week, I used to do a ride that was about 55 miles long that went up... It was a super hilly hike which started with steep uphills -- my heart rate was hovering around 160 until we flattened out here and there! Yay for me that I am in good enough shape to do this stuff again.

However, I found out last week, I am not in good enough shape to do Plyometrics on the P90X DVDs -- well, I did the full ... Wed, 1 Feb 2012 20:56:39 EST 2012 Starting Again Greetings!

I'm back tracking what I eat and finding motivation on SparkPeople. I gained 15 pounds sinde last March and I'm finally sick of being this way (eating too much and not enough veg/fruit and not exercising).

I've been eating super healthy (trying for at least 7 veg and fruit servings per day, plus legumes, and trying for only whole grains when eating grains) and doing treadmill for a week now. Scale is about the same, but says fat percentage down a bit, so that... Fri, 27 Jan 2012 23:43:44 EST Another hike around Lake Chabot Park This time with my friend Robert and we started at a different spot. I had planned to do an out-and-back on the less-used single-track parts of the park, but Robert said we should do the loop around the lake (which includes some paved/wide paths). We did 10.2 miles in 4 hours and 15 minutes, including rests and potty breaks. Pretty good! I'm not as tired as when I did almost the same hike a month or so ago.

Here's the route on

Mon, 17 May 2010 04:56:35 EST Hunger and fun I've been challenged this past week with being hungry a lot and wanting to eat more than I should to lose weight. I've tried having little snacks when the hunger doesn't go away after 20 minutes, and that helps, but difficult to not eat more. However, today was more normal/easier, thankfully. Maybe because it was a nice, sunny day (what we refer to as our summer here in the bay area -- pre-fog time!), and I took my friend's 8-year old to the beach park in Alameda for some kite flying, kite-su... Sat, 8 May 2010 04:32:21 EST Feels so good to be getting back in shape! A week ago I did a 9.3 mile hike, Friday I skiied for almost 5 hours, and this past Sunday I hiked 8.5 miles. I was really tired after each, but not too tired. It's so great to get out in nature and to use your body how it is meant to be used (it's meant to be physical!).

I really need to start doing the core exercises and some weights now though, to add to the mostly-walking routine. I have the PX-90 DV... Mon, 26 Apr 2010 19:40:41 EST I love my new food scale! A must-have for knowing what you put in your gullet! I did some research to buy a new DIGITAL scale and this Polder scale came out at the top of my list for features/consistency/value:

This is my old Braun scale from the 1980s, which survived the 1994 L.A. earthquake, albeit dirty with balsamic vinegar where it can't be cleaned:

<BR... Tue, 6 Apr 2010 17:24:29 EST What a gorgeous Spring day! I love being out on days like this. I did a 4.5 mile walk in the hills. There were so many flowers and a bright blue sky clean from the rain with puffy clouds here and there. Yay!

Mon, 5 Apr 2010 22:05:16 EST Sharing my smoothie recipe Don't expect it to taste like Jamba Juice! This is a great way to start the day with 2 or 3 of your fruit and veggie servings.

l.asp?recipe=1021444

I make a variety of smoothies using these three basic ingredients: Vanilla flavored Nitro-Peak Whey Protein Powder, ground flax seed, and Kirkland (or Metamucil) psyllium husk fiber (smooth texture, sugar-free, orange flavored). ... Mon, 5 Apr 2010 00:41:14 EST I ate a big brownie with walnuts for lunch! But it was from the best bakery we have in Oakland: Bakesale Betty![
] Check it out if you ever want to splurge. Especially their scones and the fried chicken sandwich (warning, that has over 1000 calories!).

I ate it slowly and savored every last little morsel. If you're going to cheat, I say make it count & do it right! And get back on track with the next meal or day... it's a lifestyle, not just a diet to lose some weight, afterall.

... Fri, 2 Apr 2010 23:03:12 EST Weigh in: a slight disappointment I only lost .4 pound this past week and I was really good with eating and exercise. But I do feel better and my clothes are fitting better, so in the end the scale doesn't matter as much as how good I feel. It'll come off eventually -- I probably need to amp up on the exercise end. Tue, 30 Mar 2010 20:06:24 EST My, oh, my! A Mai Tai has quite a few calories! This is the recipe I used tonight. Usually I use diet orgeat (almond) syrup instead of Amaretto, but my BF likes it this way.

1 oz gold rum
1 oz dark rum
1 oz orange curacao
1 oz Amaretto
3/4 oz lime juice

This adds up to about 320 calories!
