DENNISBISHOP's SparkPeople Blog DENNISBISHOP's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Tucson Guess I should document our move to retirement and Tucson, AZ. My final day at the office was March 17, 2017. It was also the first day of a three day road trip from SE Michigan to our new home in Tucson. We moved into our Tucson home March 25th and it seems that we are still in the process. However, all of the big and important stuff has been completed. So, with the life change it was logical that a re-commitment to a more healthy lifestyle was in order. Actually the transformation began ... Sun, 13 Aug 2017 10:27:31 EST Thanksgiving What a great day............... to give thanks. We need this day in our lives. Thu, 24 Nov 2016 08:37:38 EST Walking, golf and yard work My primary sources of exercise this summer includes four 2.5 mile walks each week, 45 holes of golf per week (ave.) and lots of work around the house. When golfing I leave my clubs on the power cart (my partner is the driver) and I walk the course. Usually get in about 8,000 steps on a typical round of 18 holes. Lots of work around the house, getting it ready for sale this fall and we prepare to head to our Tucson, AZ retirement destination. Keeps me in shape! Sat, 6 Aug 2016 08:40:56 EST Michigan winters Michigan winters suck, especially an upcoming retiree. Can't wait to get to our retirement destination, Tucson next winter! Never, ever, give up! Fri, 4 Jul 2014 07:44:57 EST November - The official end of Michigan's Golf Season Golf has helped me big time with my exercise goals. Four hours of golf, twice a week really helps me. I will need to seriously look at a gym membership - don't want to fall back this fall... and winter. Fri, 1 Nov 2013 10:49:41 EST You have to love Vince Lombardi... he was definitely a winner. "Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while, you don't do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing." Vince Lombardi Wed, 9 Oct 2013 09:23:35 EST Slow but Sure! This permanent life style change was to be slow.... very slow... on purpose. I know very well how to lose pounds, fast and sure, only to regain them because diets, by definition are based upon short term goals with activities ending once the goal has been reached. So, with the recommendation of my doctor, this lifestyle change was to be permanent and become a repeatable habit rather than short term behavior modification. Simple and sure. It started last May, 2013 with a mid term check up in ... Tue, 8 Oct 2013 11:15:07 EST July 4th - hidden fireworks in the food. We do a July 4th feast every year. It is my wife's birthdate.. and... summer... and...the family is available for a get together and that means food and drink.
This year I need to control my portions, make healthy choices and drink more water, less wine.
Here goes....
Tue, 3 Jul 2012 11:40:55 EST Back on track! I knew it was coming, that despite my new approach and better program, a plateau was going to slow me down. And sur'n'uff, it hit me, but still it was a surprise and a dissapointment. But being here before on previous journeys that ended in success has helped me accept that plateaus are just a part of everyone's journey and to keep doing what you have been doing and maybe do a double check on your measureables to make sure they are accurate and on point. So, two weeks of no loss and now, this... Thu, 28 Jun 2012 10:58:28 EST IT'S FOR REAL THIS TIME I must admit, after so many missed re-starts with my new healthy lifestyle program I was hesitant to announce yet another start to my adventure to better health. But now, after one month of developing better eating and exercise habits and experiencing a ten pound weight loss, I am well on my way, excited about the past month and looking forward to continued success. My motivation is to look back at my reasons for wanting to change my life:
1. I want to go into a regular clothes store/de... Wed, 30 May 2012 11:39:30 EST Golf 2012 Starts Today Finally, the 2012 Michigan golf season starts today with my first round of the year. Sun, 11 Mar 2012 06:35:24 EST Golf 2012 Starts Today Finally, the 2012 Michigan golf season starts today with my first round of the year. Fri, 29 Jul 2011 14:59:17 EST Update - still holding Chocolate was my downfall but and early death was my insperation.
Hit a bump in the road, but back on track! Fri, 29 Jul 2011 14:57:56 EST Here we go again update Well, here I am, about 11 weeks into my re-start and looking back I have learned:
1. The first week is always the easiest
2. You can realize significant progress in your first month - mine was a loss of 12 lbs.
3. After two months you become very cocky and think you have it in the bag - 20 lbs lost and on a roll.
4. At 10 weeks you wonder why you have not lost any more weight and you call it a "plateau".
5. At eleven weeks you wake up and get back to work.
den... Sun, 20 Mar 2011 10:07:34 EST Here we go again - poor health and my (re)new plan. Ah yes, my disease is poor health and the symptoms are excess weight, loss of energy, inability to perform rather simple tasks and a deteriorating ego. The cure is simple... honest self analysis and a commitment to change. The tools are available and well known. The path to success has been traveled before. So, forgive yourself for letting your wheels come off and for letting poor habits seduce you into your current state of disrepair.

Use your lessons learned to give you the str... Tue, 11 Jan 2011 11:30:34 EST Golf - finally The weather has been horrible up here in Michigan for the past couple of weekends, and weekends are my golf opportunities. This weekend is no different - a poor weather forecast.... so I am leaving work early on this beautiful end to April and getting in a round with my friends at a course close to my office. I intend to walk the course to maximize the exercise!
dennyb Fri, 30 Apr 2010 06:05:06 EST The weather is nice - looking forward to exercise Today I'll take a walk,
tomorrow is a round of golf! Thu, 29 Apr 2010 07:53:30 EST Tuesday's and focus I like Tuesday's. The weekend seems long past and the next, long to come. So, my focus on my program is clear and commanding. I am albe to plan accurately for the next three days with confidence that I will not be distracted nor derailed. Food and exercise will be contolled and acurately recorded. Yep, Tuesdays are good.
dennyb Tue, 6 Apr 2010 06:29:29 EST Easter Crash It was due, and sure nuf, the crash happened.
Wine and Easter do not mix... not that well. One's guard is lowered and inhibitions go out the door - and so do nutrition plans.
Alas, I will move on, wiser and more vigilant in the future!
dennyb
Mon, 5 Apr 2010 10:07:22 EST A new golf season...... This year I am determined to use golf as a part of my exercise plan. I promise to seldom use the cart, but to walk the course as my fellow player comands the left side of the cart, bringing my clubs to my side when needed.
dennyb Wed, 31 Mar 2010 03:54:14 EST Another week, another pound The fact is, I lost a pound, despite myself.
Was caught up in meeting presentations to some Korens at the office the past two days. The meetings rolled over into lunch, which the company took care of by hiring a Korean catereer - great food, high calories. It was hard to bring my standard low cal, high nutritional, pre-made lunch in to the office, esp. with the Koreans there - eating something different than they were eating would have been an insult. Well, eveidently I am through with ... Sun, 28 Mar 2010 10:02:09 EST Back on my SP path! Busted the wall down, traveled across the plateau and now back on my weight loss track to better health. Will learn from the fall and move on.
dennyb Sat, 20 Mar 2010 16:57:01 EST With three you get eggroll Well, eathing three helpings of any entre get you a roll! Sat, 6 Mar 2010 06:32:41 EST Outdoors exercise! March's snow melt is in full throttle here in MI and it could not come at a better time. I am tired of being cooped up. I love to walk and play golf and this break in the weather is a sign that my golf days are soon to start again... and better health!
dennyb Fri, 5 Mar 2010 05:49:38 EST Nearing the end of February I bet most of the people in the country are glad to see February gone, esp. those on the east coast who are still digging out! Michigan Februarys are drab and dull with very little sunshine to enjoy. February 2010 was no exception. Motivation is tough with these conditioins... but March will bring the start of spring and renewed hope for a better environment.... and a better me!
dennyb Sat, 27 Feb 2010 09:22:01 EST Back and Ready to Rock Have not posted in awhile - but just know that I am still on my path and looking foward to postive results this week!
dennyb Tue, 23 Feb 2010 13:31:27 EST Flight to Florida delayed Delta's ph0ne robot called to say they cancelled my flight to Fla and have resceduled my departure for tomorrow. Lost one day, hope more will not be lost to this storm that is moving through Michigan!
dennyb Tue, 9 Feb 2010 12:09:21 EST Try'n to eat smart when snowed in Seems like half the country has been snowed in the past two days -- and that leads to temptations. Especially when you are a guest at the in-laws and they feel that they need to entertain you with food and snacks. So far the words "no thanks" have been working.... but I need to get out of here, and quick!!
dennyb Sat, 6 Feb 2010 10:34:24 EST A Junior Arby's is not JUNIOR! Note to myself - Junior Arby's may cost only $1.00, but it will really cost you 272 frig'n calories! So only eat one! Fri, 5 Feb 2010 14:03:27 EST Eating Healthy on the road A business trip to Cleveland today - by car. These can be my downfall but not today. Took the wife with me and staying at my inlaws home in Parma. Stopped at a tollway OASIS and found a fast food grilled chicken sandwich, wiped off the mayo best I could. Had a wedge of cantaloupe for a snack after the meeting. Dinner was my treat at the Bonefish Grille and found a nice and healthy seared AHI TUNNA with Jasmine rice and a veggie medley with a house salad and one glass of red wine.
So far... Thu, 4 Feb 2010 21:21:04 EST The man in the mirror OK, look him right in the eye and ask him "Are you doing all that you can do to be healthy?" And if the response is, hey, I want to enjoy life, the reply should be "Won't you enjoy life more by being healthy?" Wed, 3 Feb 2010 04:08:00 EST Just another day of my new life So at some time you wake up and realize that this is not a diet, it will be the way you lead your life, the rest of your life. Yep, that's me, that's today... and I am perfectly OK with that!
dennyb Tue, 2 Feb 2010 20:57:06 EST It's all how you look at the half glass of water! I was bummed - gained a pound after three weeks of losses. Got really down on myself.... the I realized, hey, I'm nine pounds lighter then when I started. I'll take a 9 pound loss any ole month! So I'm continu'n to SPARK ON!!!
dennyb Mon, 1 Feb 2010 19:59:27 EST False positives Looks like Monday's great weigh-in was false..... positive, but false. I am working my a... of just to hit the same mark this Monday! Sometimes that happens I guess.
dennyb Fri, 29 Jan 2010 20:24:43 EST Big Pay-off, great weigh-in! Was VERY surprised to see a four pound drop this past week, the third week of my re-newed SP plan. But heck, I will take it for sure. That makes for a 9 pound total weight loss for the three weeks, very commendable. But I know that these missions tend to start out like gang busters then become more challenging as time goes on. Well, not this time. I've been here before and I know what I have to do! There is too much at stake, this, the 6th decade of my life. Concentrating on fresh fruit snack...
