DEMIKIT's SparkPeople Blog DEMIKIT's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Lest You Be Concerned... I haven't disappeared entirely. In one of my last blogs, I commented that I needed to step back a little bit so that I could focus on lowering my stress level, and making my mental health my primary concern, since I felt a bit like my brain was trying to explode.

This seems a counterintuitive step, because with my job, I really need to have my head in the game in order to succeed. But I felt like it was very necessary, and so, anything that wasn't directly contributing to my men... Sat, 6 Apr 2013 10:45:52 EST Out of Town for a Few Days Just so everyone knows, I will be gone until at least Saturday. I am travelling out of town to a workshop for my job tomorrow, and won't be home until Friday. These workshops tend to be very informative, but the pace is quite intense, and they are usually very long days as well. So I don't anticipate that I will be back on SP until Saturday at the earliest.

I hope everyone has a healthy and happy rest of the week! Mon, 18 Feb 2013 18:37:55 EST Curses! Foiled Again!! So now I'm sitting in my comfy chair with my foot propped up and a bag of frozen green beans on it to try to bring down the swelling. (What? We were out of frozen peas.)

Long story short, having a tough day anyway and then dropped a heavy glass shelf on my foot.

Ever wonder what force per square inch a 3/4" thick glass shelf exerts on a foot when it is dropped lengthwise (so all of the weight is behind it, right?) from a height of a bit over two feet? Enough feel ... Thu, 14 Feb 2013 20:08:39 EST Weekly Check In 2/8/13 I am glad that I changed my goals. I have really been focusing on the exercise and have managed to work out four times this week. Three were even at the gym. Right now, I am focusing on cardio, but the gym I go to does offer some amount of training, which is included in the membership. I am going out of town for a workshop for my job week after next, so I am planning on signing up for the training when I get back. Fri, 8 Feb 2013 18:49:21 EST Backtracking and Re-Planning Sparkfriends, sometimes it is very important to know when it is time to step back, admit that you weren't quite ready for the goal you set, and reset your goals.

So here's the situation. Long story, but I am under a ton of stress right now, and it is affecting my health. Some isn't even from current things, but rather residual stress from previous concerns. Anyway, I had a moment of clarity today, and I am going to have to step back and take care of myself, and save my lofty g... Tue, 5 Feb 2013 20:04:48 EST Check In, 1/26/13 Last week, still good on tracking nutrition. Tracked six days out of seven, as planned.

Not as good on exercise. Two days out of seven, instead of the five I am aiming for. Still, not upset or anything, it is progress from the week before, and I knew going in that getting in the habit of exercising regularly is one of my biggest challenges. If I can add one day a week, I will get there all the same, and if I can get there faster, so much the better.

A little more ... Sat, 26 Jan 2013 18:51:41 EST Um, Oops. Check in for 1/19/13 Totally forgot to blog my progress on Saturday. Which is why I am not a blogger. I forget pretty regularly.

Good news and bad news from last week. The bad news is that I still didn't do well on exercise. I did exercise once last week, which is still one more time than I had been regularly, so hey! Progress!!

The good news is that the nutrition tracking is going well. Just like old times, tracking all of my food hasn't been a hard habit to get back into. Last we... Tue, 22 Jan 2013 21:36:13 EST Weekly Check In 1/12/13 So I did well with tracking my food, just like I planned. The exercise didn't go as well, partly due to some health issues (bad cold last weekend, headaches, etc.) In fact, I ended up working out only one time last week instead of five as planned.

On the bright side, that means I have plenty of room for improvement! Hahaha!

Sat, 12 Jan 2013 14:56:40 EST Mid-Week Blah Early update for the week. Was sick this past weekend, and dealing with some other stuff that has prevented me from working out much this week. As a result, I expect to meet my goal for logging my food six days this week, but I am not going to make the exercise goal. In fact, I have only worked out one day this week, instead of five. Not going to manage it today, either, but hopefully will tomorrow.

On a side note, I am really loving my new job, but it is really difficult whe... Thu, 10 Jan 2013 19:35:43 EST Weekly Check In 1/5/13 I think I mentioned in a previous blog that I track my weeks Saturday through Friday, which means that I will try to blog progress for the previous week either on Friday night or Saturday.

So last week I was really only on for tracking my nutrition Wednesday through Friday, and happily, I did. I try to be as honest as I can with my tracking, which means if you actually look at my food logs, you get to see the good, the bad, and the ugly. Wednesday and Thursday were pretty ugly.... Sat, 5 Jan 2013 10:41:45 EST Minor Adjustment I have to admit, I didn't think it through completely when I said I would start tracking my food and start working out yesterday. Food tracking is going fine, although a little appalling. (I you have looked at my nutrition logs, please keep in mind that I am holiday eating, I promise I don't eat like that regularly!!)

I run my tracking week from Saturday to Friday, with my weekly weigh-in on Saturday morning. I have been doing it that way for a very long time (a decade, maybe?... Wed, 2 Jan 2013 21:25:53 EST Happy New Years! Took a little time off from my job this week, left a little bit early on Friday and then took Monday off as well as Tuesday. This is the first real vacation that I have taken since I started the new job last April. I took Christmas Day off, but it didn't feel like a vacation at all since I worked Christmas Eve. Ah, well.

Anyway, I have really enjoyed the time off, been able to spend some time with family that I don't get to see very often because they live 10 hours away. It ha... Tue, 1 Jan 2013 16:19:59 EST Accountability I am now done with phase 1, which was simply getting my mind back on my health and fitness. I know that this sounds silly, but for me, I find that I really have to think things through for a little while before I really can get started. So I have the gym membership, been lurking on SP, been being really mindful of the good habits that I learned when I first lost the weight. Ready to move on to phase two.

On a tangent, I do believe that mentally noting your current good habits ... Sat, 29 Dec 2012 14:49:44 EST New Start I love the way that life sometimes gives you the opportunity to hit the reset button, whether it is in a minor aspect of your life, or something more far-reaching. I always believe that when you recognize that chance, it is time to take a long hard look at that part of your life, and evaluate honestly the best way to take advantage of it.

A lot of the time, when I think about the old Life Reset Button, I think about my job. There have been several times in my career when I felt... Sat, 6 Oct 2012 09:25:40 EST Avon Walk.... Check!! Well, the weekend of my Avon Walk has finally come and gone. Strange, I looked forward to it for so long it seems odd that it is over! It was a great weekend, though!

I arrived Friday night, and my nerves were absolutely jangling as I went to check in for the Walk. But check in went smoothly and quickly, and I did manage to resist spending tons of cash on some really cute t-shirts that were there!!

Saturday morning, I was up and ready for an early shuttle to the Wal... Mon, 26 Oct 2009 16:52:25 EST Behind again & Hyperventilation Ok, first, I want to say that I appreciate all the concern that you all showed in comments on my last blog. I haven't had a chance to get around and thank everyone personally, but I really appreciate it all the same. I hate going to the doctor, but I probably will, I am a bit concerned myself...

******

Second, the hyperventilation is not regarding my current health status.

It is regarding a commercial I just saw on TV. Said commercial showed a "muscle to... Tue, 29 Sep 2009 21:55:55 EST Urgh. Sick again. I have another cold, and I am very frustrated with it. I have been sick more this year than I have been perhaps in the past 5 years. I have to wonder if it is maybe related to the oven fire in March, maybe my lungs just haven't finished healing yet? I wonder if I should consider going to the doctor, to follow up, or if I should just give it more time.

I would also love to know why I just try to keep going when I have a cold, but my husband drags, and whines, and fusses, and dra... Sat, 26 Sep 2009 20:09:31 EST Feeling Better, Productive Day So I am mostly feeling better. My breathing still isn't great, but hopefully that will finish clearing up soon. I do appreciate all the comments that were left, I am behind in responding to them though since I was so worn out from everything. Ah, well, in due time. Ya'll know that I love you girls!! :)

And also, my father in law is doing well, thanks to all who prayed for us there. He has been resting at home, and has been in good spirits every time I have seen him. I supp... Sat, 12 Sep 2009 21:24:12 EST An Interesting Observation I always have thought that I have a hard time eating within my calorie range when I go over to my mother in law's house. After all, she makes some very yummy food, and excellent desserts.

But yesterday, we didn't go over there, because we were going to go today instead, to give the kids another day to get over their colds before we went. And to be honest, I didn't eat great yesterday anyway. I didn't track my food, but I didn't just blow it out, I just didn't do as well as I us... Mon, 7 Sep 2009 21:16:18 EST Missing Person? No, not really. Sorry that I have been a little scarce this week. Here is the thing... My father in law went to the hospital Monday afternoon. He was admitted with chest pains, and by Tuesday they were doing a heart cath on him. He got two stints (sp?) and was finally released yesterday. Needless to say, I did some running back and forth to the hospital, then helped him get back home and settled yesterday evening. I am just glad that he is already able to be resting and on the road to recovery.
<... Thu, 3 Sep 2009 19:44:59 EST Getting Moving Again In some ways, this has been a really crazy year. I was doing really great with my health, and several other aspects of my life, and then we had the oven fire. I guess it isn't that surprising that a minor house fire would mess me up a bit. Especially since I haven't completely emotionally healed from some other things that we have dealt with in the past couple of years. I mean, last time I got derailed like this, it was due to several family things that I just had a hard time coping with.... Fri, 28 Aug 2009 22:08:35 EST Good Weekend, Bad Habits :) It has been a great weekend so far! I had an excellent walk with my sister and my best friend yesterday, we walked 3 hours and 40 minutes. Not too bad considering I haven't been able to walk for a month! And it was humid, but it wasn't too hot, so I really enjoyed it.

After our walk, I showered up, and then hubby and I did some last minute cleaning before my mom & dad got into town. They will be here for a bit over a week, and so far we are having a great visit. We are getti... Sun, 16 Aug 2009 09:01:55 EST Vacation Special Update I am back from vacation, had a great time! And I did really well while I was gone. I did continue to track my finances, and we stayed pretty well on budget. I also get plenty of sleep, ate at least six servings of fruits and veggies a day, and drank at least 10 cups of water a day. I didn't actually read my Bible every day, but since vacation was a revival and I was in Bible school nearly every day, and church every day, I am going to count that as done.

So all in all, the onl... Sun, 26 Jul 2009 19:30:57 EST June Goals Report Card In keeping with blatantly stealing my friend's idea, here is how I did with my June goals:

Exercise Goals:
-Cardio five times a week --- F
-Strength training at least three times a week ---F

Nutrition Goals:
-Track nutrition six days a week --- D

Financial Goals:
-Track every expense in spreadsheet --- A
-Save as much as possible to put toward paying off credit card debt --- A
-Pull credit report by the end of the month --- F... Fri, 3 Jul 2009 20:02:42 EST Another Rambling Update on Me Work last week was, in some ways, a very mixed bag. On the good side, it looks like corporate is really listening to the suggestions and feedback that we are giving them on some topics and issues now. The bad news is that we had another huge layoff Thursday and Friday of last week, and I have heard that we are not done yet. I still have a job, but it is terribly saddening and wearing to see friend after friend after friend laid off, as I am sure many of you know.

All the same,... Sun, 28 Jun 2009 20:42:44 EST Stepping Back a Little Just a little update on where I am.

I have bee very very busy with work, friends & family, church, and many other things, which is why I haven't been around much. After a good deal of prayer and meditation on the matter, I have decided that my Sparkfriends are too important to me to actually leave, but I am going to step back a little bit.

What does this mean? It means that I will be dropping two teams I am on. They are both private teams, one being the Community ... Tue, 23 Jun 2009 20:07:10 EST Reality or just My Reality? A funny thing happened today. Hubby & took the kids to KFC for supper. (And before you say, I ate the grilled chicken, which is actually really tasty, and am within my calorie range for the day.)

Anyway, so I got up to get us some more napkins. And this guy turned to look at me. And his wife gave me, and him, a really dirty look for it. LOL!!!

Now, obviously, it might have been just the movement of me walking across the restaurant that caught his attention, and sh... Tue, 16 Jun 2009 21:45:42 EST M.I.A. And I am sorry about it. I have missed being here. I have been running so much this week that I just haven't had time for much of anything for me. But I am going to get back on track.

As for my June goals, we are almost to the middle of June. So far, I am doing pretty well with most goals, but I am only doing about mediocre with tracking my nutrition, and my exercise has been pretty pathetic. I mean, my nutrition is pretty good when I do track it, but that wasn't the point, ... Sat, 13 Jun 2009 21:11:02 EST "My Own Worst Enemy..." Pardon me while I rant a moment, please leave this page now if you aren't in the mood for a rant.

I have seen at least three different people tonight who have made the statement, "I am my own worst enemy." I am not necessarily contesting the truth of this statement as such, however, if you start from a negative, what do you expect you will end up with?

Yep, a negative. Is is any wonder that you might lose your motivation when you assume that you will always be figh... Sat, 6 Jun 2009 21:39:56 EST My little Vicious Cycle I guess a lot of people have some type of a health vicious cycle. And in a very real way, I am very fortunate, my vicious cycle is an easy going little thing. And she isn't hungry all the time, so that is good.

The problem is that my little vicious cycle isn't getting enough sleep. And when she can't sleep, then she doesn't want to get up in the morning to exercise. But when she doesn't exercise regularly, then she has a lot of trouble sleeping. You see our problem, I am sur... Thu, 4 Jun 2009 21:18:03 EST June Goals So, new month, new goals. And since I am trying to get back on track, I am following the example of a good friend, I am going to publicly post the goals that I am working on. I will update you on my progress at the end of the month, and set new goals.

Exercise Goals:
-Cardio five times a week
-Strength training at least three times a week

Nutrition Goals:
-Track nutrition six days a week

Financial Goals:
-Track every expense in spre... Mon, 1 Jun 2009 20:00:47 EST Eat and eat and eat until I am sick.... Okay, not really. But have you ever had one of those days where you are just so stressed that you want to eat and never stop? Right?

I am not typically an emotional eater, but the one thing that sometimes gets me mechanically eating is stress. Well, girls, stress has been unbelievable this week. I am not going into detail here, but know that I haven't been neglecting you because I don't care, I do love you girls... It is because I haven't had anything left by the time I have... Thu, 28 May 2009 21:01:35 EST I stink at Intuitive Eating So I am at goal weight, and I thought that I should try to grow up and learn to eat without logging everything into my food-log-blankie.

I am sorry, girls, but I am just not ready yet. Too much has happened over the past two months, and I am still a bit out of whack. So I just need to grow up and do what I need to do to stay healthy.

I am going to go back to logging my food every day, probably for a couple more months. Hopefully by then things will be settled down ... Wed, 20 May 2009 22:06:06 EST Good Article: Get Happy So here I was feeling overwhelmed and just generally not great. And I found that a very smart gentleman posted this on one of my teams:

s-to-get-happy-in-the-next-30-minutes-
444895/

I like it! Sleep isn't on his list, but I am going to bed shortly so I can get out of bed and get back to working out in the morning! Mon, 18 May 2009 20:48:03 EST Pleasant Weekend It was a good weekend.

Friday was a fairly quiet evening, which I always consider a victory. hahaha

Saturday morning, I had a great walk with my sisters through the backwoods of, um, urban Raleigh. Seriously, you might be surprised how much there is in the way of gorgeous nature running smack through the middle of the city. We walked for over three hours through green woods, frequently with a creek or stream running beside, and all kinds of flowers all around.
... Mon, 11 May 2009 20:26:10 EST What to do... Okay, so I am having a strange problem right now. I am learning to maintain my weight, right? So I have increased my calorie range in order to stop losing. Great!

But here is the problem: I am so used to eating a bit less, that I am having trouble eating enough. And I love me some sweets and carbs!! So at the end of the day I will think, "Hmmm, need a few more calories. Great, where are the cookies?"

I don't really think that is the right direction.
<B... Thu, 7 May 2009 21:20:28 EST Popcorn! I love popcorn! I had some tonight, and it was really good, I wanted to quickly pass on a tip that someone mentioned to me a long time ago. Instead of getting the popcorn that is loaded with butter and salt, add a shake or two of one of your favorite dried herbs to it. She suggested rosemary. Tonight I used a mix of herbs meant for fish, but I have also used basil, thyme, and several others, tasty!!

Alternately, a tablespoon of grated parmesan is only 25 calories, but adds a t... Fri, 1 May 2009 21:12:48 EST General Health Update I am sorry that I haven't posted for a while. I am finally caught up with the message boards and my emails here at SP, and that is great. I still have a bunch of stuff that I am working on catching up in my personal life, but I am making forward progress.

I am close to being completely back on track with my eating. I am not there yet with my exercising, but I will be. Honestly, I have been very tired so much lately, and I have to think that it is just stress, and recovering f... Thu, 30 Apr 2009 20:35:41 EST 25,000 and Miscellany So woo hoo!! I just reached 25,000 points!! Yay me!

And I am also starting to see the repercussions of having met goal weight: I had to increase my daily calories. It is very strange to suddenly find myself watching to be sure that I eat ENOUGH calories for the day!! And I have had several people tell me to be careful because I really don't need to lose any more. Weird. Very weird. I am also finding it challenging to add calories without just wolfing down brownies. I don... Fri, 24 Apr 2009 20:56:34 EST Reality Check, Please!! The plumbing repairs yesterday morning went quickly and smoothly, even though they were expensive. And there is very, very little still to be done on the house as far as fire cleanup/repairs go.

So! ON with life!!

Tonight I did my strength training, and I am going to bed very very shortly so I can be up in time to do some type of cardio. Haven't been able to work out for three weeks and I am ready to get started again!!

And I have been getting ready for... Tue, 14 Apr 2009 21:54:11 EST When it rains, it pours. I am sort of sick about talking about my house here.

We have roots blocking our sewer line, which will take a nice little chunk of money to fix. I suppose it is possible that our homeowners' insurance will cover that too, but I have to also wonder how many claims you can make in the course of a month and not get dropped.

Oh, and someone hit the front of my car when it was sitting in a parking lot last week. Crunched the hood, bumper, headlight. And it was just si... Mon, 13 Apr 2009 10:00:58 EST Back, and getting back to business. Past few days have been crazy. My parents are in town, and I had taken two days off from work, yesterday and today, to spend with them. But we found out that we were ready to move back into our house, so yesterday I spent the whole day unpacking. My folks and sister helped a great deal, and now we still have a bunch of unpacked boxes, but we are back in our house and it is fully functional again.

It is really nice, in fact, new vinyl & carpet, new countertops, new fridge, disp... Fri, 10 Apr 2009 20:55:58 EST Back soon, and many many thanks First, I wanted to say it again: I cannot tell you how much the support, love, and prayers that you all have sent through all of this means to me. You ladies are absolutely awesome!! I have been on pretty sporadically, and the time that I have been on I have been trying to check in on the teams that I lead. But I have been reading all the comments and goodies, usually many times over, I appreciate them so very much!! Thank you all - I love you girls!!!

Also, it sounds like I... Sun, 5 Apr 2009 20:24:20 EST Went to the doctor.... So I am still sick today, I am weak, achy, congested, and coughing, and having problems with my asthma. So hubby bullied me, or rather coerced me, into going to the doctor this afternoon.

Unfortunately, the doctor seems to agree with hubby. I have a bad virus or something. But the doctor is more concerned about my asthma, which is more out of control than it has ever been. I am now on antibiotics, plus my rescue inhaler is now a four times a day inhaler for the time being, an... Thu, 2 Apr 2009 19:59:47 EST More Fire Update, and so forth We are still in the hotel, but it sounds like we will be out within a week now. Yay!! Tomorrow, they are supposed to install the carpets and vinyl flooring, and then Friday, the new countertops will go in. Early next week, our ducts will be cleaned, and then after, they will start moving us back into our house. Then they will clean the soft furniture. The only hitch here is this strange little thing... I didn't really think about this, but a refrigerator has an air intake. And my poor ... Wed, 1 Apr 2009 21:04:14 EST Carpet, Working Out Well, our house has been repainted, and the color is lovely if I do say so myself. We have also picked the new countertops, vinyl floors, and are waiting to hear on the cabinets, if they can be fixed or if the need to be replaced. So now it is all a question of scheduling and so forth. The "hotel house" (as my three year old calls it) is a very nice hotel, but it is a bit small for four people, including two children who are exhausted because they can't sleep because this is all so very ex... Fri, 27 Mar 2009 13:37:00 EST Settled, tired, and slightly sick Finally, we are all settled into our temporary home. It is a really nice hotel, and we are even able to have my kitty here with us. The kids are still way wound up but hopefully we will all get some sleep.

The biggest downside is that I haven't figured out where or how I am going to work out yet. But you had better believe that I will find a way.

And I am sick. I have picked up a bad cold so I am not really up to working out again anyway. It feels like someone c... Tue, 24 Mar 2009 20:57:29 EST I am getting booted out of my house. We got informed late Friday, day before yesterday, as in, 4:30 in the afternoon, that the painters can be here on Tuesday. A Packrat was dropped in our driveway for our stuff, and we were called with a reservation for a suite at a local hotel, and we were told to be gone by sometime on Monday. Like, yes, tomorrow. Fortunately, the insurance people have already done the majority of the packing, and I understand that there will be another small army of them tomorrow to help finish the packin... Sun, 22 Mar 2009 20:40:33 EST Oven Fire Update First, I wanted to tell everyone thank you so much for your support and prayers. They mean a lot to me, I haven't been on much but I have read the wonderfully loving comments and goodies many times over. I will stop by everyone's pages with a more personal thanks, but I don't have much time on tonight, and may not for several more nights. But I do appreciate it, a great deal.

As far as my house goes, well, this is just a disaster. When I wrote my last blog, I had thought there... Wed, 18 Mar 2009 20:11:58 EST
