Mon, 1 Jan 2018 23:00:35 EST Marathon done!!! Well, it's been so long since I have been on here. I was so focused on training for the marathon that I let so many other things in my life slide. Spark was one of those things.

Last year I started training for the marathon only to injure my knee and not get to run. This year, I was much more careful and I am happy to say I was able to not only run, but beat my time from 2013!! I felt so empowered once I finished. Am I doing this again? You bet I am!! My sights are set on Philly n... Thu, 26 Oct 2017 09:02:13 EST It can be done!!! Well, it can be done. You can work at it and you can see a difference. I took a before picture of myself back in Feb 2016. Had hubby take another one where I am wearing the same shirt yesterday. Well, you see the difference.

I hope this inspires others that if you stick with it, you too will see a difference.
386 593 244 Sun, 23 Jul 2017 11:42:55 EST Sorry for my absence Sorry for my absence to my friends and to the team I am co leading. I am currently not in a very good place to do much on here. I have not forgot all of you and wish I could get back to my old self and I am confident I will. Hoping by spring to be there. Thanks to all of you who commented on my last blog. Thanks for the friendship and for sticking with me though this. I wish you all well and hope you are reaching your goals. I am thinking of all of you.

Hugs!!

Deb
Mon, 20 Feb 2017 11:37:21 EST 1 Year and still moving Well, been quite a year for me but a good one in some ways and some ways not. One year ago, on Valentine's day last year, I started back here on Spark but more serious. I was determined to make it work for me this time. And I did. But the best part is I made some great friends along the way.

So, the results are in!! I lost 15.5 pounds. I went down overall 10.5 inches. So, the clothes I couldn't fit into that were hanging in my closet, I now can fit into again. Yay!!! But, I am not... Tue, 14 Feb 2017 07:19:02 EST Game, Set and Match!! Well, as my youngest daughter used to say when she played tennis in high school, Game, Set and Match!! And she said it often, she was a pretty good tennis player.

I feel like a winner like her. I set out my goals at the beginning of the year. Only two, and two that were attainable. First was the marathon. I could have reached that if not for my darn knee!! Next year!! Second was to lose 15 pounds by years end. Well, I am happy to say I have met that one!! I met my 15 pounds loss ... Thu, 15 Dec 2016 07:09:43 EST Drink your water! Today marks the first day of the challenge I posted on the Spark CT - The Official Team page. Being one of the leaders, I am always trying to figure out ways to help others reach their goals. And be the 'resident cheerleader'. Which fits my personality because way back in the day (way back!) I was a cheerleader in high school.

It is important to drink your water daily. As I pointed out in the challenge, it has so many benefits. If you are not on the team, you can pop over and chec... Sun, 20 Nov 2016 09:27:49 EST Support The one thing I love about Spark is the support you get from others. I have made friends on here that I never dreamed I would make. Though far away, they still support me in a way I have never seen from friends that live a mile from me. Those people are not on Spark but friends I made at prior work places.

Support is so important when you are traveling down this road of weight loss. Even if it is a small gesture of saying 'keep pushing' or 'way to go', it still makes you smile and... Mon, 24 Oct 2016 08:53:05 EST Racing to my Goal!!! Was a great weekend walking for breast cancer awareness. A good workout too!! The walk wasn't on a flat course, there were hills so that was good for the legs. Hanging around Bushnell Park in Hartford gave me the desire even more to train for next years marathon which takes place there. Well, the start and finish is there.

I have worked pretty hard all year to get to my other goal, to lose 15 pounds by Dec 31st. As of this weekend, I have lost 9 pounds. The beginning of the year I... Mon, 17 Oct 2016 08:15:26 EST Small victories If you read my status on Oct 8th, you will know that I was sad because I was not able to participate in the Hartford Marathon this year. Some might say, well, there are other races. Yes, that is true, there are so many other races and there is always next year. But what made me so sad is this was one of my goals for this year. I only had two - run the marathon and lose 15 pounds by the end of the year. Both very attainable. So here we are in October, the race is over, I wasn't there so that g... Sun, 9 Oct 2016 10:40:12 EST No progress this week, but not bad because.... Well, I had no progress this week in weight loss but it isn't bad because I went to the fair earlier in the week and then out for a nice big lunch which included 2 glasses of wine yesterday. I am lucky I stayed even!! Yay me!!

I have been really tracking closely since 9/11. And as of today, I have lost 3.5 pounds. Not bad. It has been a back and forth thing, two steps forward one step back. Can be frustrating but I have to look at the big picture. And that is, I am losing and not g... Sun, 2 Oct 2016 13:42:55 EST Making Strides, Making progress and challenge started Well, I am starting off with that the Spark Connecticut team has raised $85 so far for the Making Strides of Hartford against Breast Cancer. It isn't a ton, but every bit helps in research and awareness for this disease. There is still time to join our team and walk with us on Oct. 16th. If you just want to walk, that is fine. If you just want to fundraise and not walk, that is fine too. Just make sure to click the Join Our Team button to be added. I am looking forward to this day. Walking wi... Sun, 25 Sep 2016 09:46:29 EST Making Strides of Hartford against Breast Cancer Well, been so long to blog. I was blogging mostly about my running. But, that has been put on hold due to a knee injury. That is fine, it is only a small injury that can be resolved with rest. Easy to do and not life threatening. Life threatening is breast cancer. I don't know anyone personally affected by this but I have lost people I love to other cancers. The research goes on all the time for cures for these things and there is a lot we can do to help.

I have signed up this team... Sun, 11 Sep 2016 11:46:30 EST And I made it!!! 334 So, I am so excited for getting that 14 mile run in!! Really was beginning to doubt myself at mile 12 but, I pulled it together and told myself I could do it!! I was using a patella strap but bought myself a knee sleeve and I loved that so much better. So, now for the next two weeks I do shorter runs before I go on to 16 miles. That seems almost impossible, but I have done it before so I know I can do it again!! Here is an image of me right after my run. Made Barry take one of ... Sun, 17 Jul 2016 13:01:45 EST It might only been 1 mile.... But, it was actually 1.27 miles in very thick humid air, but I did it! I ran the whole thing. And my time was as good as I would want it to be for the race. I tightened up my patella strap and started slow. All felt good, I kept going. I felt a slight twinge but, I worked through it and it quickly went away. I could have easily kept going if the air hadn't been so thick and I didn't want to push it. I will try 2 miles tomorrow and then rest Saturday and maybe try my 14 miles on Sunday. Of cou... Thu, 14 Jul 2016 10:52:48 EST Not giving up quite yet!!! Well, been a rough week with trying to do a run on Friday. I got about 2 blocks and the knee was saying 'Uh No!!!'. So, I stopped the running and continued to walk for 2 miles. Depressing as that was, it was more depressing to not be able to get that long run in this week that is on my training schedule. But, I am not giving up quite yet. I still have some time, though the window is closing, to continue to train and get to where I need to be before the race. I don't want to 'just finish'. Tha... Sun, 10 Jul 2016 14:05:45 EST Scheduled Walk, Marathon Training and What Not Well, being the co leader of the CT Team, I have been busy trying to connect with members of that team and get people excited about SP and being on the team. The other leader, Lorna and I decided that a scheduled walk might be the thing to get people charged up. So, we had our first one yesterday and it was fun. It was her, myself and one other member. Three of us, what a success I think. We had a wonderful walk at Northwest Park in Windsor and went on the Bog Trail. It was a half mile and w... Sun, 26 Jun 2016 20:26:18 EST Marathon Training - First week done Well, the first week of training is in the books! That first week is the hardest I find. I did pretty well, only missing one running day. That was due to such high winds outside. Other than that, I made all the other days. I got my first run for this week in today. A nice 5 mile run and the weather was just perfect. If the weather stays like this all summer, I won't have any trouble at all. But, even if it doesn't, the last time I trained for the marathon I trained during the hottest summer i... Mon, 13 Jun 2016 12:42:15 EST And so it begins 522 I have not blogged in a couple of weeks and that has gotten me off track. Off track for eating, off track for exercising and just everything it seems. Blogging is what really seemed to be my answer to getting back on track with everything in my life it seems. And it actually is the thing that made me some new friends a long the way. One of which I actually met up with which was so cool! So nice to meet a fellow Sparker.

I am a co-leader of a team here in CT and we ar... Mon, 6 Jun 2016 07:40:27 EST Springtime to keep you active Well, I didn't make huge strives this last week, but nothing like springtime to keep you active outdoors. I tried to keep to the goals I had given myself, but I got so wrapped up in cleaning up yards, flower and vegetable beds, I found only one day to get out and run. But, it was a good run. I really thought after a month off of not running, I would lose all I had gained. But I ran that 5.5 miles like it was nothing!! Yay me!! So, I will get out two times this week and do a run. I still have ... Mon, 23 May 2016 07:47:01 EST I need to recharge - I need some motivation Been a hard week. Cannot seem to get the motivation I had before. It could be due to the pain I have been in. I will be glad to see my doctor on Tuesday so her and I can talk about getting rid of that pain again. Unfortunately it is a condition that the drugs will last for so long then the begin to stop working so we have to change them up again. Not really a lot of fun and this week has not been fun with that.

I only kept up with my challenge part of the week and haven't done any... Sun, 15 May 2016 16:46:17 EST Back on Track and Moving Forward Well, I am back on track, and with the exception of yesterday, keeping up with logging food and water and exercising in some capacity daily. This last week it has been mostly doing my challenge which I increased sets with. And my body is feeling it!! But, that tells me my muscles are building and that I am happy about. This next week I will be beefing it up with my cardio and get back to running, walking and I am thinking on breaking out my daughters old bike she left in our garage and doing ... Sun, 8 May 2016 12:33:14 EST It's okay to forget to be here!! Well, I didn't really forget to be here. I was on vacation. Yep, wonderful vacation. I had a plan, a plan to keep up my workouts, even if only every other day. But, you what they say about the best laid plans. Ha ha. My hubby got sick first, and horrible for him to deal with that flying across the country. Just when we thought he was better and all was going well, I got sick with the same thing. That'll teach me for drinking out of his water bottle!! Ha ha.It was a 48 hour thing but the rest ... Tue, 3 May 2016 15:20:43 EST Creating Habits Well, as my SP friends on here know, I have been sorta addicted to doing challenges. I started with the 28 day boot camp challenge. I really only did that because I had started it some time ago and never finished, so I felt compelled to finally do it start to finish. So, I did and felt so good. Lost an inch or two I think and 2 pounds. So, when I finished I almost felt sad because I didn't have something to follow each day. So, I joined another one called the 30 day jumpstart your workout cha... Sun, 17 Apr 2016 15:20:30 EST What I did and didn't do I usually blog about progress from my last week, but really, there hasn't been any. Everything is the same which I expected with not doing any cardio at all. So, thought I would write about what I have done and not done in my quest here for the last 2 months to lose weight and get healthier.

First, I will tell what I have done. I started on here to really just have the tools to keep track of my food and exercise. I have done that to a half degree. It has helped. After a week I star... Sun, 10 Apr 2016 10:07:56 EST Being a tortoise isn't a bad thing! Well, being a tortoise isn't bad. I would rather be that than the hare. Why? Because slow and steady wins the race. And that is my attitude when I run races. I start off slow and keep steady so I can finish strong. And that is exactly how my weight loss is going, and that is fine. I have lost another 1 1/2 pounds this week. Funny, how in the beginning I couldn't seem to lose despite all my efforts. I am doing nothing different now than I did in the beginning but I now seem to be 'gaining grou... Sun, 3 Apr 2016 10:51:11 EST A low week ending on a high note! Well, been a low week for me. Just in a funk that I couldn't shake like in the past. Mostly low because I felt after so long I should have been making better strides in my weight loss. I continued on with my efforts, doing my daily challenge exercises. I ran only once last week which was yesterday. Had hope to do 5 miles but a pulling in my calf made me stop for fear of it turning into something worse. But, 4.3 miles isn't bad. So, the moment of truth is I lost yet another pound and an inch i... Sun, 27 Mar 2016 08:06:31 EST Discouraged Yesterday I would have blogged as I have been but I was in a depression about my inability to lose weight. Back in January I had my husband take two photos of me, front and side view so I could look at them, stay motivated and then compare down the road. Yesterday I had him take those same photos wearing the same clothes so I could hopefully see some difference and stay motivated. Well, there was no difference. It was like looking at the same photo. I log my food, I exercise, I follow challen... Mon, 21 Mar 2016 08:13:17 EST Have patience it pays off. Well, today was my log in day and the end of my 28-day boot camp and though I got frustrated at times and depressed at the weekly sight of my scale not moving, today I am happy to say it finally did!! I lost 2 pounds. May not seem like much to many considering how long I have been coming on here and really working at this, but medication plays a part in how slow this has become. So, instead of doing what I have always done in the past to lose pounds, I realized I needed to kick it up to make ... Sun, 13 Mar 2016 18:23:25 EST Frustrated but determined!! Today was my weigh in and I am frustrated that I gained back the only pound I have lost since the first of the year. But, I am determined to get this weight off and lose inches. I did lose some inches last week and this week I stayed steady so I count that as a win! I may have gained back the pound but not the inches. I am beginning my last week of the 28-day Bootcamp Challenge and I am determined to make this the week that counts and shows the change I am looking for. We have warm days ahead... Sun, 6 Mar 2016 09:18:54 EST Progress comes in many forms I was afraid to get on the scale. And as I feared, no weight loss. But, I know that you can lose one week, not another, and then lose the following week. I don't give up on that. My progress though came not in weight loss, but the loss of inches. One inch each around my belly and waist. So, that I was thankful for. So I may not have lost weight, but I did lose inches and I can see the fat on my back has gone away a little. So, another victory. Yay!!

I continue to follow the 28 day ... Sun, 28 Feb 2016 19:16:05 EST First week success!! Well, my first week back at Sparkpeople and I have success. I am following the 28-Day Bootcamp and I did well. I lost 1 pound this week. Yay! I feel more energized even after just one week. We had 60 degree weather yesterday and I decided to go for a walk. Well, that walk turned into a walk/jog. It felt great and I completed 2 miles without much trouble. Wile in that walk/jog I envisioned myself back at the Hartford Marathon I ran in 2013. Upon returning home I got online, logged my run here ... Sun, 21 Feb 2016 10:24:18 EST Been so long My last blog entry was in 2013 when I ran the Hartford Marathon. I blogged through my training then on race day. It was an experience I will never forget. And, it is one I would love to repeat.

I have gained weight due to a medical condition and one side effect of the meds I am on is weight gain. I have been trying to lose this weight with no luck so far. Started right after New Years and I have lost a total of 1/2 pound. So depressing. But, my mantra is "I will not give up". Try... Mon, 15 Feb 2016 18:16:17 EST Marathon Day!!! Well, been a month almost since my last entry. Was a hard month with my training lacking and the fact that I couldn't seem to master a 20 mile run before the race. This fact worried me considerably. I got lots of encouragement from family and friends though which did help me. The week before the race I was filled with a lot of anxiety. I had personal issues going on, my hip bursitis was acting up and the night before the race I couldn't sleep due to my right leg hurting so bad from it.
... Mon, 14 Oct 2013 09:36:58 EST Marathon Training - Week 20 I feel like I was beat up today. I had a horrible night sleep and my hip acting up so my 20 mile run today was more like 14 miles. Ugh. I was not a happy camper about that. The entire run felt just bad from the word go! I kept pushing in hopes that once I found my rhythm that the run would just fall into place. But, I never found it and I struggled the entire run. I was very disappointed.

So, I spent the entire afternoon researching 'bad runs' here on Spark and anywhere else on the... Sun, 15 Sep 2013 19:15:35 EST Marathon Training- Weeks 18 & 19 I was very much looking forward to my 20 mile run. I am not sure how I have been able to keep up with these increases since my training hasn't actually been text book. Or, followed too closely to the plan. But, I somehow have been able to. I think because I start each run with knowing I need to begin slow and work up. I may not break any records but I am able to run the distance and with the exception of the last two miles each time, not with too much problem.

I was supposed to run... Wed, 11 Sep 2013 20:51:07 EST Marathon Training - Weeks 16 &17 I hate set backs. Ugh. After my last long run, getting my training in through the week was challenging. Then, Saturday hit and my back began to spasm. I was in so much pain just walking. So, I didn't do the shorter run scheduled for last Sunday in hopes to get my back better for todays long run. Again, a week of no training except for Friday where I was able to go out and get some mileage in. Thank goodness, because I don't think todays run would have been very successful. So, I made sure to ... Sun, 25 Aug 2013 19:53:13 EST Marathon Training - Weeks 14 & 15 Had to write for both weeks because I missed last week and for good reason, I didn't run. I had a car accident and was letting my body rest before stressing it with a run. So, two weeks off and it didn't do me good but I did manage to get my run in two days ago. I did 15.5 miles. Whew. I remember a time when running for 4 minutes without stopping was a big deal! LOL Now, I run for 3 1/2 hours. Of course I take walk breaks while I take in my nutrition and water, but for the most part, I run. ... Tue, 13 Aug 2013 22:26:46 EST Marathon Training - Week 13 Well, I am a few days late on this entry but, better late than never. It wasn't a bad week for training. Got a good run in during the week, some swimming, and I got my long run of 14 miles in on Sunday. I felt good through the whole run, until the last couple miles. I am at the point of now needing two weeks of recovery after my long runs because they have become so long. But, when I do my long run, I am adding 2 miles from the last now. So, I went from 12 to 14 this time. Wasn't so bad. I hi... Tue, 30 Jul 2013 21:29:43 EST Marathon Training - Week 12 Well, a very nothing week for training. The humidity and the heat wave was too much. I mean, it just sapped the energy out of you just walking to the car from the front door. :P Now, last week with the pulled hamstring I had decided to take it easy anyhow, which I did. Gave it time to get better. It wasn't a bad pull, but enough to feel it when I would walk. But, by the end of the week I was feeling much better in that area but the heat wave kept me from doing anything. I did manage though to... Sun, 21 Jul 2013 17:27:19 EST Marathon Training - Week 11 So, a slow week for training. We did have a dry day but I woke up with a sinus headache so didn't get out for a run on the only best day of running this week. I did get my 12 mile run in today though. It was tough during the second half and I couldn't figure out why. I thought it was perhaps I didn't take my last nutrition gummies and perhaps that was why. Or I thought maybe I wasn't drinking enough water though I thought I was. I got home, did my usual stretching and then icing of my legs an... Sun, 14 Jul 2013 19:59:55 EST Marathon Training - Week 10 Well, it would be nice if the weather was better for this training. Two weeks running now of heat and humidity and no relief in sight. The only thing I keep telling myself is that with training in this weather, running in October ought to be a lot easier. Only one training run this week. That was on Thursday, and I did 6 miles. Not a bad run. Then, today I did my long run and logged in 11 miles. I am still amazed that I can actually run that far. :) And today, even with the humidity, I actual... Sun, 7 Jul 2013 20:28:37 EST Marathon Training - Week 9 So, the week began okay, but still having a hard time working in the training runs with this humidity so strong. So, I did get a run in but not as long as I wanted because the weather just did me in. So, I decided that people do run in this, so I had to read up on how they do it. So, with that research, I felt confident enough to get my long run in today outside rather than resorting to the gym's treadmill (also known to me as the 'dreadmill' because I hate to run on a treadmill). I didn't ha... Sun, 30 Jun 2013 18:42:29 EST Marathon Training - Week 8 So, not a bad week. I did get some training in though not all of it due to my schedule being thrown off with my car out of commission. Needed a ride to work so getting the full runs in was difficult. I ordered new shoes as the last ones I got didn't do well for me. I changed brands and I probably shouldn't have. Need to stick with what I know works for me. So, my new shoes arrived on Friday along with all my new running stuff like my running shorts. It is amazing how just those things can mak... Sun, 23 Jun 2013 19:34:39 EST Marathon Training - Week 7 So, not a bad week though I didn't do all my training runs. I need to work on that more especially with the increase in my long runs on Sundays. Used my new shoes today on my run but I can tell they aren't going to be the shoes for the race. Tried on some at the store, thought these felt good after jogging around the store. But, running in them has proved different. I loved my old shoes which are too broken down to use for running so I am going to see if I can find that model online to purcha... Sun, 16 Jun 2013 21:29:59 EST Marathon Training - Week 6 So, the week didn't go too bad. I managed a short run on Tuesday though it should have been 4 miles, I only got 2 1/2 done. I did do 4 miles on Wednesday. No run on Thur, Fri or Sat. But todays long run was very good and I completed 7 miles. Yay me! I have had to switch up though and I no longer carry my water bottle with the strap and now wear my hydration belt. I also tried for the first time Cliff Shots and I find that I like those better than gels. I will pick up more of those for future ... Sun, 9 Jun 2013 21:26:17 EST Marathon Training - Week 5 Well, I started out the week pretty good with a run on Tuesday of 4 miles, but, with the first heat wave of the season this week, that is where it stopped. I tried to go out on Thursday and lasted 1/4 mile and walked some before going home. Disappointing but, I know weeks will be like that. So, my goal was to make sure to at least get my long run in for the week which I did do today. Took my time, took some walk breaks and drank my water and I got in 6 miles today. Very pleased considering it... Sun, 2 Jun 2013 19:28:29 EST Marathon Training - Week 4 So, a real bust of a week. Bad weather, and no motivation. Life threw me a curve ball and I it hit me hard. Spent the weekend in PA enjoying family time. Got some renewed energy. This weeks long run was a repeat of last week so I don't feel like I have fallen behind by not doing it. Tomorrow I begin the next week. I must get my runs in if I am to make an increase on Sunday. Moving forward now and feeling good about it. Mon, 27 May 2013 22:15:04 EST Marathon Training - Week 3 So, with the week I just had, I didn't do any training. Saying goodbye to my dear friend was emotional and took a toll on my whole self. Sleepless nights and long work days kept me from doing any runs at all. But, today, my long run day, I did get up and get myself moving and did my 5 mile run today. It felt great and was something I desperately needed. My focus for this next week is to get my training runs in and get back on track.

Running - good for the soul. Something I need ri... Sun, 19 May 2013 11:37:43 EST Marathon Training - Week 2 So, considering the week I just had, I didn't do to terribly bad. I unfortunately had to deal with an untimely passing of a coworker. So the week was a very sad one for me along with the 20th anniversary of my own mother's death. So, given that, I had a few days of non running. Monday of course was rest day and Tuesday I ran 3 miles before work. Wednesday I couldn't seem to get myself moving for a run. Not feeling well that morning and tired. Thursday however I was back to myself and ran 2 m... Sun, 12 May 2013 20:13:55 EST
