CRISPINI's SparkPeople Blog CRISPINI's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Almost ready to wrap up May! Wow, where DID it all go? The last couple of weekends have been CRA-ZY. Memorial Day weekend I stayed in town, but that Friday night I went out to see a play. Saturday I went rowing and spent half the morning hanging out and chatting with my girlfriends. Got a ton of gardening done and then went out for a lovely dinner with a different girlfriend. Sunday morning I went on a wild food identification walk - it was awesome, I can't wait to start eating the weeds! Then I had not one but T... Thu, 30 May 2013 22:49:26 EST Fun fact about protein Did you know your body can only absorb about 20 grams of protein at a time? The rest just goes right on through (lol). So it's much better and more effective to eat your protein in smaller doses throughout the day rather than all at one time.

(Still reading the "Nutrition" chapter of "Rowing Faster" haha) Thu, 9 May 2013 11:01:32 EST Food logging So I've been getting pretty spotty about my food logging lately. I know exactly why, too. Since I've been on the 7 fruit and vegetables program, I have been feeling MUCH better and I have lost some weight. So, I don't feel like I should have to log, because I know what's doing it.

I also don't much like logging. It takes up time and I feel kind of self-conscious about it. In some ways it feels like a "punishment." Like, oh, I can't manage to eat well by myself so I've insta... Wed, 8 May 2013 13:59:29 EST Acupuncture I've been going to a new acupuncturist lately for my back and I really have had some great pain relief. My back was definitely "in crisis" and she has pulled it back to "normal for me" which means, hurts most of the time but not that bad. So I am excited about that and now we are working on my old nagging chronic pain which is interesting. So I just thought I'd share a little bit about acupuncture. Here is what I have learned over the course of 15 years and three different acupuncturists.... Tue, 7 May 2013 10:55:17 EST Back in a single! So yesterday I went out to the lake and got in a single for the first time in about 8 months. A single is a one-person rowing boat but these are not "rowboats" these are racing shells - therefore they are SUPER tippy and unstable - if you do not keep your balance and keep your oars straight out you WILL flip. They are a lot like riding a bike. I have spent most of the winter rowing in team boats (doubles and quads and the eight) which are MUCH bigger and more stable. WOW was I rusty. So ... Sun, 5 May 2013 10:13:02 EST Wow, lost 5 pounds! I was feeling fat today so I hopped on the scale and what do you know, I've lost 5 pounds. How did that happen? I guess it must be from all of the freggies, that's the main thing I've done differently lately, is my attempt to get in 7 servings of fruit and veg a day, I am having problems squeezing anything else in! LOL! Lots of cooking and shopping in the produce section, along with eggs, lean meat, etc. Anyway, wow, what a great way to start off the day! If I keep this up I will be able... Thu, 2 May 2013 08:49:03 EST New Find - Seaweed Snack! So I buy a certain amount of stuff on the Amazon subscribe and save program because 1) it is cheap 2) I am shockingly lazy. And I found these:

nacks/sesame

They are 30 calories / serving -- which is 60 calories / package. And that's some TASTY stuff. They totally fit my salt/fat tooth (just like potato chips, umm). Honestly, I think they probably taste BETTER than potato chips. Although I am sure that they are... Tue, 30 Apr 2013 19:18:49 EST End of Month report + Texas State Rowing Championships. So….. my "Project Reboot" started at the end of March and ran all the way through April. I set myself a bunch of nutritional and positive habit goals like getting back on Spark, getting more veggies, more sleep, more water etc. I can't say that I EVER got to 100% of my goals every day BUT I can say that I DO feel a lot more energetic and physically healthy.

SO, I am declaring VICTORY! Yay! Project Reboot = a success! Congratulations, GO ME! LOL. Ok, it sounds silly but I t... Mon, 29 Apr 2013 13:34:06 EST Almost back on track So, since I got food poisoning on my business trip two weeks ago, last week was mostly spent trying to get caught up on all my work stuff. I feel like I am almost caught up now and have started trying to pay more attention to my healthy eating / reboot program. I have been doing really well with cooking more, especially more vegetables. Tonight I had a lovely dinner of some leftover baked potatoes - the cool purple ones, they've got to be healthy because they're purple right? LOL. And a ... Tue, 23 Apr 2013 22:19:47 EST Not five but SEVEN fruit and veg a day. So I heard something about this on the radio over the weekend and went looking for it online this morning. Sure enough, there's a new study out that we eat SEVEN servings of fruit and veg a day (now, a serving is not necessarily huge, but that's still a lot of fruit and veg.) And the study found it correlated with... HAPPINESS! That's so cool!

Linky:

0/121009102003.htm

Some of the article:
Oct. 9, 201... Mon, 22 Apr 2013 10:52:53 EST NY Times article says exercise helps your memory Researchers say that both cardio and weightlifting help your memory, both in different ways.

Which is really kinda scary because what with all the exercise I've been doing if this is HELPING I don't really want to know what my memory would be like without it! LOL!

Article here:

w-exercise-may-boost-the-brain/?src=me
&ref=general
Tue, 16 Apr 2013 21:41:41 EST Update on business trip and rowing Well. The business trip started out pretty well, with some healthy choices and even a session on the elliptical at the hotel gym, and then...

I got food poisoning.

Out-both-ends, head-in-the-toilet, horrible cramping pains, kill-me-now food poisoning.

So basically I spent the last half of the business trip in the bathroom or in bed, ignoring absolutely everything. So, that was fun and productive, and now I am completely, totally behind on absolutely ever... Mon, 15 Apr 2013 22:33:10 EST 100% today and it's THURSDAY. SWEET. Hit EVERY LAST ONE OF MY FITNESS GOALS TODAY!

Now THAT is progress.

If at first you don't succeed - KEEP ON TRYING!

I'm totally buying myself those socks. Maybe I'll buy the socks and the jersey I want and have the socks be for this two weeks and the jersey for the next two weeks. Hee! Thu, 4 Apr 2013 20:04:57 EST The two-week reboot is going OK. Regarding my long long list of healthy stuff I'm trying to do:

I'm seeing a definite pattern here where the week starts out strong, fades by the end of the week, completely craters on the weekend, and then starts out good on Monday again. So that is something I need to work on.

However, overall I think my energy levels this week are higher than last week, so I think even though I haven't ever got 100% on all my goals on any one day, things are going well. I think the... Wed, 3 Apr 2013 15:39:44 EST Kayaking and Happy Easter So, I tried kayaking yesterday with a group I found on meetup. I do not own a kayak, but the organizer rented kayaks and towed them down there for us. This is the third time I have kayaked but the first two were sort of "special occasion" kayak events i.e. I went sea kayaking once as part of an Alaskan cruise, and I did a "fireworks trip" tour kayak on the Chicago river (which is mad fun, by the way, if you ever find yourself in Chicago, you should DO IT, it's crazy).

ANYWAY, s... Sun, 31 Mar 2013 11:17:43 EST Tracking is SO helpful! OMG you guys it is only day 2 of my RE-ENERGIZE campaign and I already feel so much better (mentally) just because I am tracking my food again! It is SUPER easy to do with the Spark iPhone app - MUCH easier than it was the first time I did all the tracking, when there was no iPhone app yet. AND, just the act of tracking is helping me get back in control, i.e. eating at regular times, REAL FOOD not just a couple of crackers and some sardines! AND, it is forcing me to PLAN meals and make sur... Tue, 26 Mar 2013 22:00:07 EST Campaign: RE-ENERGIZE!!! POW! I'm feeling very low energy these days. I'm not eating very well, (I am probably not eating enough calories for the amount of working out I'm doing), I'm not taking my vitamins, and I'm not getting enough sleep. I'm still working out quite a bit, but overall, I am feeling very low and draggy. I need to go back and work on the basics. So here they are, here are my goals for the next two weeks.

DAILY GOALS:
Take a multivitamin every day.
Get at least eight hours of sle... Mon, 25 Mar 2013 11:54:25 EST Weekend goals accomplished (sort of) Went to yoga today, and also went to the grocery store and did a certain amount of shopping although I lost my list halfway through so I am not entirely sure what I have got and what I have not. Menus are not planned but I will do that shortly and I may have to go shop again. I do have to lie down a bit, though, I think I overdid it this weekend since I rowed portside yesterday which is my bad side, and then went for a quick run, and then yoga today and now my back hurts. LOL!

... Sun, 17 Mar 2013 15:09:23 EST Oops, didn't check in yesterday, so here's a quick check in for today. Thu, 14 Mar 2013 18:57:43 EST Goal progress! Goal #1: Self-Motivation - Doing well, logging on spark every day!

Goal #2: Personal Training - check, DONE!

Goal #4: In progress - doing well with that.

Next I need to work on Goal 3 and Goal 5!

Babysteps, babysteps! :) Tue, 12 Mar 2013 21:12:07 EST Happy Monday! Goals for the week. I have to admit, I like Mondays. It's another day and another fresh week to try and do GREAT THINGS in!

Looking back, I can put a big check by all of last week's goals. YAY! You know what they say, nothing succeeds like success! So now it's time for: MORE GOALS:

Goal #1: SELF-MOTIVATION - Continue to build my positive energy towards exercising and living healthy by coming to Spark every day and reading articles, getting Spark Points, blogging, posting on message boa... Mon, 11 Mar 2013 10:55:29 EST Two steps forward, one step back Ok, so I made my appointment with a Personal Trainer for Monday, so that's goals #2 and goals #3 accomplished for this week.

However, goal #1 - Motivation - has taken a big hit today. My boyfriend broke up with me last night :( and right at the moment all I want to do is sit around and eat pizza. I am not motivated to GET motivated, if you know what I mean?

Sigh. I am sure I will feel better soon. Thankfully I told a friend of mine I would come to her party tonigh... Fri, 8 Mar 2013 18:35:21 EST Motivation is building! Goal #1: Attitude Reboot In Progress!
Logged on to Spark today and hung out on the message boards and read blogs Also downloaded a bunch of Zig Ziglar podcasts and listened to them. He is kind of corny but I really enjoy his funny style. Plus, they were free. So I think I am making good progress on that goal and will continue to work on that this week.

Goal #2, done!

Goal #3, will call the personal trainer tomorrow, promise! Friday is my deadline! :)

... Wed, 6 Mar 2013 22:36:08 EST Update on this week's goals Goal #1. Revitalize my attitude towards healthy diet and fitness by logging into Spark every day for the next week and participating on the message boards at least with one post.
-- Oops, so I already blew this one by not logging in yesterday, BUT, I was at a regatta where I won silver and gold medals (YAY!) so I think I get a pass on this one - especially because I am back here today, yay!

Goal #2. Install the Spark app on my smartphone. -- DONE and CHECK

Goal #3.... Mon, 4 Mar 2013 17:04:16 EST Three years (ish) since the start of my Spark Journey! Well, there seems to be something about the spring that leads me to check in here, since I notice that my last blog was a year ago yesterday. :)

Wow, a year seems like a long time, considering how much happened last year!

I lost that last 10 pounds I wanted to lose via (1) giving up alcohol for Lent and (2) a medical issue in the spring. Nothing serious, but it made me lose the last few pounds.
Then I gained it back over Christmas, LOL. So I'm back sort-of wher... Sat, 2 Mar 2013 12:27:54 EST Treadmill desk! So I set myself up with a treadmill desk about 2 years ago but I never did it full-out with getting the monitor at the right height for my eyes. So that was uncomfortable and I didn't stick with it long. Well this week I reinvented the Treadmill Desk, Mark II, and I've gotten a good 2 hours in on it walking and working, every day. Today I think I'm going to hit 3 hours. Next week my goal is 3 to 4 hours a day.

I'm pretty stoked about the spring. I'm hoping to take off those l... Thu, 1 Mar 2012 16:39:23 EST Valentine's Day Wishes. Dear Ones,

On this Valentines Day, some of us may be incandescently in love, while others may be gnawed by the little sharp teeth of loneliness, sadness, fear and doubt. Some of us may be feeling both at the same time (and isn’t that a beautiful mess). Some of us may be just going about our day feeling none of the above. Regardless of where you are at, human relationships are tricky, love is a scary / funny / complicated thing, and it’s hard to have an ideal shoved in your face... Tue, 14 Feb 2012 09:27:59 EST Lost 40 pounds with Spark and kept it off for two years so far. Well I'm coming up on my two year Spark-iversary and although I haven't been around much lately I just wanted to poke my head back in the door and say HI to old friends and all of the New Year's Resolutioners! And send you best wishes and warm thoughts! And I wanted to share just a little bit of what has worked for me in my journey so far in hopes it will aid, encourage and inspire.

1) A healthy diet helped me take the weight off; exercise has helped me keep the weight off. <... Sun, 8 Jan 2012 15:51:15 EST M.I.A.... ooops! If there is one thing I wish I could tell everyone, EVERYONE IN THE WORLD, it would be this:

Exercise is the one thing in my day -- EVERY SINGLE DAY -- that never fails to make me feel AMAZING.

AND IT WILL DO THE SAME THING FOR YOU.

Rowing with friends on the beautiful flat lake as the sun comes up over the water. Running down my quiet neighborhood street and enjoying the evening dusk and the trees. Yoga on my DVD in my back room with a little incense burn... Sat, 10 Sep 2011 13:36:43 EST Friday rowing blog and PMP challenge entry card Today was a good day for rowing! My regular double buddy is still out sick so I met up with a rower from another club and we went out in a double. It was a lot of fun! My regular partner and I have been rowing together so much we really know each other very well, so it was interesting to row with someone else. There are all these little things that are different about the way you communicate, etc., when you are from different boathouses. Anyway, we had a good time. She is really an amaz... Fri, 9 Sep 2011 18:36:11 EST Woke up cranky this morning. LOL, that would be me, myself, not anyone I may or may not have been sleeping with. ;)

Anyhoo. I just felt tired, stiff, and sore. Sure, I have done a couple of hard days working out on the lake, so that is part of it. But a bigger part of it, I think, is that I haven't done any yoga for a like a couple of weeks -- and what with all the rowing plus the butt-in-chair-all-day-long day job, i just naturally stiffen up. SO -- went and did my yoga DVD -- and what do you know, I f... Thu, 8 Sep 2011 08:55:06 EST Thinking about making a change to my weekend routine. This morning I got back from my row .... ah... it was gorgeous out there, even if my rowing buddy was not here and I had to take a single... it was a nice flat lake and the sun came up in a zillion different shades of pink and gold. Life is good. (Contented sigh.)

ANYWAY. So I'm in the shower just kind of letting my mind wander over all the things that I had to do today and there's like a zillion personal things I want to accomplish (house, organization, my side business project... Wed, 7 Sep 2011 10:51:14 EST Dra. Ma. Oh boy there was nothin' but DRAMA at the boathouse this morning, let me tell you.

First I should explain that we have kind of an unusual setup where the boathouse is built out over the water -- it's an old house, built in the 30's -- and there are individual boat bays. Each bay has a floating dock. The docks are bungeed to the pillars inside the boathouse, and when you want to go row, you take a boat off the rack, put it on slings on the dock, take the bungee off, slide the doc... Fri, 2 Sep 2011 13:55:00 EST Tree update and other stuff! Well, the tree is gone, but it took quite a bit of doing to get it gone. Here is what a 60 ton crane looks like:

Here is a giant tree flying through the air:

Here is my new skylight! The emergency tree crew left at 11 p.m. So the situation is stable, but the tree is still there. The crane is coming this morning. LOL!

Thu, 25 Aug 2011 09:12:24 EST Hum... Interesting Development! So... okay... last week, kind of average on the food. I was doing pretty low-carb even though I didn't track. Had an okay week on the rowing, but nothing to really write home about. Did lots of yoga.

And then the weekend. A family member was visiting. She wanted Mexican food. Friday AND Saturday. So we went. Yes, I ate chips. Yes, I ate beer. My entree choices were okay, didn't have a lot of cheese, but I did eat the beans and rice. It was carb-riffic to say the least. ... Mon, 22 Aug 2011 17:18:34 EST Friday and Saturday update. Friday was a little bit of an off day for me. I got frustrated about work stuff and wound up eating too many crackers and hummus. Not the worst thing to overindulge in, I suppose, but still, it's kind of high-carb for what I've been trying to do. AND, I didn't log, either.

Saturday was better for me-- although I still didn't log, at least I ate pretty well despite that. AND, I was wickedly productive -- got lots of stuff done around the house.

AND, I finally got m... Sun, 14 Aug 2011 11:31:55 EST Holy. Freaking. Cow. After my workout this morning I got home and was dancing around listening to my iPod as I cleaned up the kitchen. (General Public, "Tenderness," and yes, I am a child of the 80s, why do you ask? hehe)

And suddenly I stopped and though -- WOW. I haven'f done this in a LONG time, like weeks or maybe even months. (Not the kitchen-cleaning! I have cleaned my kitchen! But the dancing-around-kitchen-cleaning thing! It's been freaking forever!)

All I can say is out of no... Thu, 11 Aug 2011 10:21:58 EST Check-in Wednesday Yay me, I am still logging all my food and exercise.

I've done my Yoga Challenge 1 DVD twice this week and I always feel SO INCREDIBLE when I'm done. It's ridiculous how tight my right side is, also my back, my hips and my hip flexors. I'm sure a lot of that is from rowing so much. However I have seen some good progress with only doing it twice this week, so I'm going to keep it up. I plan to get up really early tomorrow and do that before rowing! On the positive side, I am r... Wed, 10 Aug 2011 22:57:11 EST Book Review: "Why We Get Fat" All I can say about this book is, Wow. Just wow. READ IT NOW.

In a nutshell, this book says that the real reason why we get fat is: Insulin / hormone levels.

It's NOT the conventional wisdom of calories-in-calories-out. It's due to eating too much carbohydrates which causes insulin to rise which makes us store energy as fat. The solution is to eat like the Atkins diet.

I know, I know, you're thinking -- more quackery. Well. This book did quite a b... Mon, 8 Aug 2011 11:56:13 EST "The Perfect is the Enemy of the Good" Little Miss All-or-Nothing-Brain has made her appearance back in my life. So it's time to banish her and remind myself of a few things.

You don't have to stretch perfectly. You don't have to do a half hour or more of your favorite yoga poses, preferably while attired in your best yoga gear. No. Just pick your top three or four poses and do them after you work out. Because doing them imperfectly is better than not doing them at all.

You don't have to strength-trai... Sun, 7 Aug 2011 16:38:08 EST Check-in for Saturday 48 Food is logged. Overall, made good choices, calories seem a bit low maybe.
48 Exercise is logged.
48 Water is logged. Don't think I got enough. Will try harder tomorrow.

I've been reading up on overtraining and I do think that may be the problem. I am going to take tomorrow off from exercise or maybe just do some yoga.

Tomorrow's #1 priority: Making meal plans and grocery shopping for the week! Bedtime now... zzzzzZZ... Sat, 6 Aug 2011 23:28:51 EST Overtrained or undertrained or who knows what?! I'm back!

And I'm exhausted.

Long story short: One of my rowing buddies and I have decided to train for a race. In a double. Like, together. So for the last 5 weeks or so we have been going out and rowing 5 days a week. Also doing a certain amount of stationary rowing as well. We have been working with a rowing coach on form and whatnot. Anyway, I decided to row by myself this morning and when I got done I was just EXHAUSTED. And I have been feeling kind of ti... Sat, 6 Aug 2011 10:56:13 EST Whoops, where did I go? On weekends I've been taking a class about Permaculture Design, which is basically the idea of designing your landscape for maximum sustainability, so not just gardening but also edible landscaping, water management, and so on. (Permaculture = "permanent agriculture"). I've really enjoyed the class and have met lots of great new people and learned lots of great new stuff, which is wonderful, but it's also made me super busy! Oh well. It's a good thing and I'm hoping it will lead in a new d... Thu, 12 May 2011 11:59:02 EST Quick update on workouts and such This has NOT been a good week for food. Easter on Sunday (which was fabulous and delicious) and I had a fancy political dinner to go to last night. The food was great but I totally overate. I feel way bloated today, like you know the picture of a snake that's eaten an elephant and you can still see the exact outline of the elephant in the snake's belly? I feel JUST like that.

Found it! It's from "Le Pet... Thu, 28 Apr 2011 10:29:21 EST This has been a weird week I've started a short weekend class about sustainable landscape design that began last weekend; it ran Saturday, Sunday and Monday. (and again for two more weekends, after Easter). I did get out on the erg on Monday morning, but for the last three days I just couldn't get myself out there. I told myself I would go to the gym at lunch, but then of course I got busy during the day and just didn't go.

Moral of the story -- if I don't exercise first thing in the morning, it's not g... Thu, 21 Apr 2011 17:12:12 EST Realization about exercise The BF sent me an email this morning telling me that we were possibly going out to this bar / burger joint after work with a couple of his friends. My first thought? "Man, I don't want to eat any of that -- I have been working TOO HARD to mess this up with bad food choices."

Heheheh. Nice!

I think having races out there and having goals is so important! Not just to DO an event but to do WELL in an event! After all, if you are just working out to "get fit" -- well th... Fri, 15 Apr 2011 16:17:53 EST Today's training: Intervals on erg A good day today, warmed up and then did 3 1000 meter pieces on the erg. My fastest piece was 4:28, which is 2:14 per 500 meters, which is really good for me! It was pretty brutal, though, I was really tired. Nevertheless that is my fastest time yet so I am proud of it.

Have come to the conclusion it is easier for me to go hard on the erg than on the water because there is much less to think of on the erg. Mainly technique and all that about not falling in. Nevertheless if I ... Thu, 14 Apr 2011 23:24:56 EST Draft training plan So I came to the conclusion that I can't really finalize this training plan until Amanda gets back from her trip and we decide whether or not we are going to row a double together in the regatta in 6 weeks. Also there is a good "fitness assessment" in the sculling book I bought which I am thinking about doing, but haven't quite figured it all out yet. Nevertheless, I think this is a good start so I'm going to go ahead and write it down.

Monday through Friday mornings, row or erg ... Thu, 14 Apr 2011 23:20:25 EST
