Tests showed he had an irregularity in his brain which may be a tumor. He is a fine man, and my daughter's future brother-in-law. Please pray that God's healing hand touch him, and that God grant loving peace to his family. Thank you!

Brian Thu, 21 Jul 2011 23:20:17 EST An answer to a father's prayer. I have been praying for my children for the past year and a half to return to the Church. I love them all, but they haven't been faithful in their practice of the faith as they should be. My wife told me today that our eldest daughter, who is getting married in October, is returning to the Church and also getting married in the Church! I intend to say a novena in thanks for this!

Thanks be to God!

Brian 213 Tue, 15 Mar 2011 22:31:36 EST Tragedy While I was away this weekend, I heard news of a tragic car wreck near my home. This accident claimed the lives of four people, one of whom was an acquaintance. He was a fellow singer, a barbershopper who loved his art, and he was a retired school principal who found it as his calling to continue to act in that role as a "sub". He was assisting another principal who has cancer when the accident occured. Please pray for the families and friends who will feel the loss of their loved ones. ... Mon, 8 Nov 2010 12:30:06 EST Please pray! Please pray for my wife's school, as they have had a tragic loss. One of the aides was found dead in a motel room under apparently mysterious circumstances. Irregardless, this is not going to be a happy year for them. Please pray for peace for comfort for them and especially for the family. Thank you.

Brian Tue, 17 Aug 2010 21:54:38 EST Thoughts on becoming a "senior citizen". Today I turned the magic number of 55..AARP wants me in their ranks, Bob Evans will let me eat from a special menu, etc. I look on this age as a start for some reassessment of my goals. of what I want to make a better, healthier me.
As I continue on mt Spark journey, I see the changes in my lifestyle I have made, and the changes I need to make. I wish I had made the changes in my life 20 years ago, but as they say, "if wishes were horses....". I am enjoying the changes in me that ha... Then, tomorrow evening, my wife and I are going to Wolf Trap to enjoy a performance of "The Mikado"! Fri, 21 May 2010 21:10:55 EST More credit to Sparkpeople! One of the problems I was facing when I was overweight was high blood pressure. After several years of warning me, my physician finally put me on a beta blocker for the HBP. Three months ago, after losing weight, and going to the gym, he decided to take me off the meds for a trial time. This past Monday, he (the physician) was so impressed with my blood presure readings, that he decided to keep me off for another six months. The reading this week have been 122/73, 108/57, and 121/62! I... Sun, 18 Apr 2010 23:06:45 EST Prayers, please! Hi Friends! I would ask you to keep in prayer a friend of me and my wife. Thank you!

Brian Tue, 16 Mar 2010 22:28:29 EST Stage 2 I had my 6 month evaluation at the Wellness Center, and my trainer was very pleased with the progress my wife and I have made. I have added two machines to my training and upped my treadmill training. I am also going to begin the training for a 5K, possibly in October. My ribs are back to normal, and everything else is going great! A short note to all my Sparkfriends:

Thanks be to God and thanks to all you my Sparkfriends, I have made goal! This morning I weighed in at 199.8 lbs! I plan to lose about 5 more pounds to keep a buffer zone, but today is a truly happy day for me! Fri, 19 Feb 2010 09:50:39 EST OUCH!!!! and a look backward and forward on New Years. To update all my Sparkfriends, I spent New Years Eve in the ER instead of rollicking and rocking in 2010. It turns out I broke 3 ribs (7, 8, and 9) doing a relatively easy job of bringing in thegarbage cans. Bottom line, I slipped on some ice and landed broadside on one of the galvanized garbage cans. Enough of the woe-is-me...for now.
Since I joined Spark People back on March 10, my life has changed for the better. Two years ago I was probably a borderline alcoholic, frequently... Fri, 1 Jan 2010 11:25:39 EST To my friends There is an old saying, "He who has a thousand friends, has not a friend to spare." I have many friends, and many of my friends are Sparkfriends. It truly grieves me when I lose a friend, for whatever reason, and especially when I have the ability to prevent it.
We are Spark "friends". We are not Spark "strangers" or Spark "acquantainces", but friends. When we are friends, we share our victories as well as our troubles...that's what friends are for. I have seen too many of ... Thu, 5 Nov 2009 20:21:26 EST Great weekend! It has been a great weekend so far. I was able to finish a major outdoor project that was needing to be finished, had a couple of friends over for dinner last night, went to early church this morning, and had a six mile walk this afternoon. Tonight I'll go to quartet rehearsal for the first time in quite a few weeks, and it should be a good one. I have two more outside projects I need to do, but I'll get them done as time allows. Because I am eating healthier and exercising, I have a lot ... Sun, 4 Oct 2009 15:53:21 EST six-pack No, I'm not talking about a six-pack of coke. I'm not even talking about a six-pack of PBR or Bud or Miller. I'm talking about the beginning of something that I never thought I see on me..a six-pack set of abs. Do I look like Terrell Owens or some body-builder. Of course not, but SparkPeople has started me on the way to losing the" Keg" I carried around for years. I can see and feel the difference! SparkPeople has started me on a path to a newer, healthier me, both in terms of eating ... Thu, 24 Sep 2009 20:15:57 EST Gigs and food. As I stated in my status, I had two performances yesterday, both opportunities to perform and to eat my brains out. I am happy to say I did the former, but used considerable restrain in eating. The first gig was an outdoor festival in VA, where there was apple opportunity to pig out, but my lunch there was a crab cake sandwich, no tartar sauce, and some water. My Romney gig was in a church where there was plenty of great foods and snacks after the performance, but whereas I used to pig out... Sun, 20 Sep 2009 09:43:40 EST Great time! We had a great time this weekend. Last night, my son and I walked around the ramparts of Ft. Monroe, armed with a digital camera and a Digital voice recorder to catch the sights and sounds of the "spirit" world. Didn't catch much except a few insect bites, but still fun, and I got 80 minutes of walking in. Today after mass, we went down to Hampton, and caught a tour boat for a three hour tour of the the harbor, the naval yard complete with aircraft carriers and other naval vessels, and an ... Sun, 6 Sep 2009 18:30:29 EST Interesting Article I read on my MSN news page an interesting article. Under editor's picks was one entitled. "Why Do We Hate Fat People?" In this article by Kate Dailey and Abbie Ellin, they point out how pop culture and the media seem to be in an attack mode toward overweight people.
True, we should be aware of obesity and its sometime dire side effects, but too often as not, people target not the obesity, but the person instead. It is pointed out in the article that through the prejudices of our ... Sat, 29 Aug 2009 21:27:41 EST Walking again! Today was the first chance since my ER trip to get a decent walk outside. I tok a differen t route this time, but I still wondered in the back of my head whether I will have another allergic reaction. After one hour of walking, NO PROBLEMS! 104 OF course I had my new best friend, my EpiPen@, with me!

Spark ya later!

Brian Mon, 17 Aug 2009 22:10:10 EST An interesting evening Yesterday was a very interesting evening, and one I would rather not repeat. I went out for my usual walk, and on my return trip, I noticed my eyes were starting to burn. By the time I made it home, I was having trouble breathing, I was having trouble swallowing, and my eyes were tearing up bad. I went to the bathroom, and I was shocked to see myself in the mirror! I was scary enough that my wife called 911. I was transported to the hospital, administered epinephrin and benedryl intraven... Fri, 14 Aug 2009 15:53:53 EST Wellness My trip to the center today was fantastic! I had the trainers up my levels on the strength training, some with added weight, some with increased reps. and I could feel the burn, and after I was finished, I felt really good. Since joining Spark people, I have been able to incrase the tempo of my walking pace, my eating has been under control, I've been trying new recipes, and overall just feeling GOOD! 244

Spark ya later!

213

Bria... Mon, 10 Aug 2009 21:15:36 EST Getting there I am sharing this at the risk of sounding vain. When I started my Spark journey, I was not particularly fond of my body. After starting a cardio and strength training regimen, I have noticed changes in my physique that make me happy. The weight is coming off, and my body is less round, and becoming more angular. I may not have a "six-pack", but I'm no longer carrying around a "keg". Using the fitness and nutrition trackers have helped me in starting a new and healthy lifestyle!

... Thu, 6 Aug 2009 11:32:09 EST Wellness Center pt. 4 ("Whew!") We had our third appointment at the welness center today, and it was a workout! I feel okay..except for the fact that I also helped my neighbor for an hour cutting up and moving a tree that had fallen actoss our lane during last night's storm. (Ahime!) So I kinda had a double workout...from 11:00 to about 12:30 moving brush and timber, and from 1:50 to 2:45 on the machines. Needless to say, I should sleep VERY well tonight. The good news is I am seeing some improvement in my body over th... Thu, 30 Jul 2009 16:11:25 EST Wellness Center pt. 3 We went to the center today and was shown how to do training on about 7 different machines, including treadmill, stationary bike, and various weight machines. On Thursday we will receive our keys, check-in tags, and do a full workout on all the equipment we worked on today. My wife seems committed, and I know I am, so it looks like we are on our way.

Spark ya' later. 213

Brian Tue, 28 Jul 2009 18:36:00 EST Wellness Center Pt. 2 Today was part 2 of the wellness center, and today we had our measurements taken, and some vitals taken. My BP was 110/70 and my resting heart rate was 64! I was really impressed with that number! My BMI was high, but I knew that was coming, as was body to fat ratio. Tomorrow we work with a trainer to give us some idea of what we will be doing to turn our bodies and lives around. I am really looking forward to this bend in the road to a new and healthy life style!

Spark ya ... Mon, 27 Jul 2009 21:30:01 EST Wellness Center My wife and I have taken the next step in our journey by enrolling at the Wellness Center at City Hospital. We turned in our preliminary paperwork, and we go in on Monday to do the rest (payment) and get our physical tests to see where we are, where we want to go, and what we need to become healthier and more fit. I predict it will be quite an eye-opener for both of us! I am really looking forward to begin this new step in my (our) Spark journey!

Spark ya later!

Bria... Fri, 24 Jul 2009 21:09:59 EST Back Home Again I'm using the title of the John Denver hit for my blog, because I feel it is appropriate. I journeyed through parts of West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina this past weekend, and the beauty of this part of the country is simply unbelieveable. My first destination was Big Stone Gap, Va, to watch the outdoor drama "Te Trail of the Lonesome Pine", based on a novel by JohnFox Jr, who lived for a while in that town. I was even selected from the audience to be a juror inthe pl... Sun, 19 Jul 2009 23:04:55 EST Weekend road trip My wife and I are heading down to Big Stone Gap, VA to watch the outdoor drama "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" and then going down to Asheville NC to visit my in-laws for a few days. As always, eating on the road can be a challenge, but my in-laws are healthy eaters, so meals at their place should be no problem. Have a great weekend if I don't get to log in and chat.

Brian Wed, 15 Jul 2009 22:09:06 EST AARRRRRRGGHHH! I had an appointment with my doctor this morning, and it turns out that I've fractured one of the bones in my right foot. The doctor curtailed my run / walk to no more than 30 minutes a day. That limits my distance to no more than2 miles per day, for the next 4-8 weeks! 46 Needless to say...I was really bummed out! The good news was that my blood pressure and heart rate were really good, and he was really impressed with my weight loss. I guess with a little bad news comes ... Mon, 6 Jul 2009 18:45:33 EST This weekend I am spending the weekend with my son an daughter-in-law in Virginia, so my postings will be erratic at best. I am going to try to get a walk in tomorrow and then go hear the cannons at Ft Monroe sound off. Later in the evening we'll go the the firework display at the fort.
I hope everybody has a wonderful and safe 4th of July!

Brian 252 283 232 195 Fri, 3 Jul 2009 22:44:57 EST Stepping it up a notch Today I decided to add something new to my walk. On my return trip, I walked 100 steps, then jogged 25, walked 100, jogged 25, etc. Surprisingly I didn't fall down on my face and colapse after it was over. I feel good and am going to keep up this routine. Wish me luck! Tue, 30 Jun 2009 17:18:48 EST volleyball I just came back from playing volleyball with some of my school co-workers. I hadn't played in years, and I had almost forgotten how much fun it really was. It was a great way to burn off a few calories! Wed, 24 Jun 2009 13:00:03 EST Anniversary My wife and I will be celebrating 29 years of wedded bliss tomorrow, June 21. We were married in the historic St. Peter's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, WV and honeymooned at Blackwater Falls. Tomorrow we are heading to Penn Alps, MD for dinner and a night at the Stonebow Inn Bed and Breakfast near Grantsville.
We have had our ups and downs, our struggles and our joys, but I wouldn't trade these past years for anything in the world. I am sharing this with you to share my joy... Sat, 20 Jun 2009 17:11:21 EST Performing this evening! For anyone in the area of the eastern panhandle of WV, the Inwood Blue and GRay Chorus will be performing this evening at 7:00. It is a flag day presentation at the War Memorial Park in Martinsburg, and will include a program of patriotic numbers. The comedy quartet, Ricochet, will also be performing this evening. 652 Thu, 11 Jun 2009 16:05:46 EST Yeah! Today was a great day. We had a "Biggest Loser" contest at our school...and I won! 104 185 Fri, 5 Jun 2009 17:36:54 EST ACS Relay for Life Tomorrow I am doing something that may seem to most a little strange. As a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, I promised to spend the night on the roof of my school if the students raised $1200 dollars. They raised almost $1800! So tomorrow night, June 1, I am spending the night camped out on the roof of my school for a most worthy cause. If anybody would like to donate to the cause, contact Berkeley County Relay for Life, (or any local chapter). I know of too many fine educat... Sun, 31 May 2009 19:05:40 EST prayers needed Today is a sad day at my school. One of our students was killed yesterday in a truck accident. The grandfather had picked the child up at the bus stop, and according to the story, was riding in the back of the pick-up. The truck ran off the road and flipped, sending the child out of the vehicle. The crisis team is here now to help with the other students and teachers. I have her class today for music, so it will be a very difficult time. Please keep us all in your prayers. Thanks.... Wed, 20 May 2009 09:30:57 EST Son This evening my wife and I are picking up my son and his wife from Dulles Airport. It will be good to see them again, after not seeing them for 18 months. The challenge, as always, will be eating and schedules while they are with us. Everybody has different tastes, different needs, and my biggest challenge will be not drinking alcohol. (I recently gave up beer and hard liquor). Just keep us in your prayers and thoughts while they are with us. I am looking forward to the visit, and the g... Sun, 17 May 2009 17:16:55 EST Charleston. This afternoon I leave for a three day conference in Charleston. This will be the first time since I began Sparks that I don't have a lot of control on what goes in my mouth. It will be a challenge, of course, but with your thoughts and prayers, fellow Sparkers, I think I can do it. I don't know how much computer access time I will have to keep contact, so everybody have a wonderful weekend!
Brian Wed, 6 May 2009 11:34:33 EST Concert more ways than one. Our men's chorus had their annual spring concert last night, to a full house with some marvelous singing. The concert was preceded by a spaghetti supper, which in the past would have been a disaster for me. But since Sparks I have able to make better choices. I had a small portion of spagetti, meatless sauce (about 1/4 cup) and a salad with a small amount of dressing, and NO dessert. At the afterglow reception following the show, I had some decaf coffee and a light snack, and that was it... Sun, 3 May 2009 14:50:05 EST
