CRAFTYC's SparkPeople Blog CRAFTYC's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Glad I got home from vacation when I did! Ok. I would love to have been able to stay on the coast longer, and yes, I need to blog and add some pics from our week in Galveston. It's a long drive back (around 12 hrs, with stops) and DH said if I got tired to stop and get a room. Boy, am I glad I didn't! There was weather around us, but we had clear sailing home, unpacked the car, and went to bed. Wild storms overnight - lots of lightning and rain. Woke up to a flooded yard. No surprise!

Early afternoon, decided to go to the ... Sat, 1 May 2010 18:21:58 EST Latest project - Grow Light Stand I've wanted one of these for a long time... bought the lights for it, even. Knew I needed a stand. So... decided to force the issue! That means I went ahead and planted my seed. Knew that w/ the heating mat they would be popping up before I knew it. Sure enough, 5 days later... green showing! Now I GOTTA get it in gear or I'll have weak little plants once again...
So yesterday I looked around on the net, got a couple of ideas, decided I did NOT want to make the PVC variety stand - PVC is... Sun, 7 Mar 2010 17:22:38 EST Conquering the Canny House Mouse If only mice didn't leave doodles and piddles all over the place. If only they didn't chew through walls and carry germs. If only they could find things to eat that wouldn't ruin whole packages of good food. If only they weren't so noisy at night! And if only it weren't so hard to get rid of them!!!
Thankfully, I haven't had as many invade the house this winter as I have in some winters past. One now and then, not entire families. But they are still destructive and therefore it is needfu... Tue, 23 Feb 2010 11:25:21 EST Happy New Year! Time to regroup/reboot! What makes a person just stop? I spent 10 months of the year exercising regularly, getting on Sparks on a daily basis, doing great. Doubled my goal of running a 5K competitively, and had good times doing it both times. Increased my distance... all going really well. Then in Nov I just shut down. The only things I did on a regular basis was log in, spin the wheel, and read 2 blogs a day. Didn't track anything, and unfortunately didn't run or walk on a regular basis, either. My goal was 750 aer... Fri, 1 Jan 2010 16:29:01 EST There's No Excuse for Bad Behavior! Ok. I'm venting, and it doesn't have anything to do with healthy living. Well, inferred, only...
My daughter is a member of Patriot Guard Riders. If you haven't heard of them, they are a group of motorcycle riders, many of them Vietnam Veterans, who escort, stand flag lines, and when necessary, shield family members of fallen servicemen and women from the rantings and harassment of very unChristian people who think it appropriate to intrude on the grief of a family who has lost a member ... Tue, 13 Oct 2009 19:35:55 EST What to do with a stray? Late afternoon yesterday I was in the house when I heard screaming, knocking at the door, and then a young neighbor girl burst into my house - along with her little terrier and a loose pit bull! Chaos! The girl I know is petrified of larger dogs - especially loose ones! In this case the loose pitbull was really just trying to find someone to play with - that was very quickly very obvious. Thankfully! I grabbed the pit, got the girl to move back with her dog and some neighborhood boys who also... Sat, 1 Aug 2009 10:25:55 EST Another 5K attempt... I signed up for my 1st 5K run in May. Due to a bad thunderstorm, it got postponed until today. You can read about it in a aprevious blog...
I got the emails telling me about the new date and time, and showed up to run this morning. No one else was there! I called my daughter and had her double check the date, time and place (yes, I have been known to miss-read things...) but it was correct. NOBODY else was there! Called the contact numbers I had - one was just leave a message and the oth... Sat, 27 Jun 2009 12:53:35 EST Edible Flowers One of the most beautiful salads I ever saw was strewn with edible flowers. It was so pretty, it was almost a shame to eat it! I have also enjoyed rose petal sandwiches and stuffed squash blossoms. After I found out my daylilies were edible, I did try them (kind of like eating iceberg lettuce - not a lot of flavor, but pleasant) Wandering around somewhere recently I found this website that lists a lot of different edible flowers and wanted to share!

Wed, 13 May 2009 22:24:26 EST 1st 5K - sort of... I finally entered a 5K race. I've been wanting to for quite awhile and found one that wasn't too far away and didn't cost as much as a lot of them. ($15 instead of $20, and only $5 for kids under 18) Got signed up and turned up for the race this morning. Hadn't slept real well last night - had quite a T-storm pass thru, but it was over an hour before it was time to leave. Humid, but reasonably cool - great day for an outdoor run! Arrived, and the first thing I heard was - race was cancelled d... Sat, 9 May 2009 12:33:42 EST Making Granola I'm trying something new today, in self defense. I bought a granola cereal last week and when I served myself some for breakfast - I ended up drinking an extra cup of milk to wash it down because it was SO sweet! I'm used to granolas w/ dried fruit being a bit high on the sugar grams, but this wasn't the dried fruit. I think somebody forgot to turn off the sugar spigot when they made it... I didn't have any unsweet cereals that would combine well with the granola. Some musli isn't too bad on ... Mon, 20 Apr 2009 15:49:00 EST Snow Day!
I know many of you here wouldn't be excited by snow, but it's the first decent one we've had in years! And it's not ice! Unfortunately it's so wet from the rain we got the day before that we still can't build a decent snowman, but it's been really pretty. I did get my potted plants back in since they wouldn't enjoy the snow as much as they enjoyed the 70* weather we had just a couple days ago. <img src="http://photos-ak.s... Sat, 28 Feb 2009 19:52:06 EST I Found My Poem! It's been missing for years, but I just found a copy of it tucked away in my file cabinet! It's a poem I wrote about 12 years ago while attending a ladies' Bible study. Wanted to share it. It is copywrited, so please do not use it without written permission. I hope you enjoy it!

Desert Wanderings
by (CraftyC)

Do you see him? Do you see who it is,
Coming up from the desert like a column of s... Thu, 29 Jan 2009 22:28:22 EST DH's New Diet that Really Works! (You've gotta read his story!) Yesterday I was buying a large bag of Purina dog chow at Wal-Mart, for my dog Athena, the wonder dog. I was about to check out when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think that I had an elephant?

Since I had little else to do, on impulse, I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, and that I was starting the Purina Diet again, although I probably shouldn't because I ended up in the hospital last time. On the bright side though, I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened ... Mon, 26 Jan 2009 20:49:31 EST Bedroom progress
I've been talking about it, but here are a couple pics showing what I've been doing in the bedroom. I really wish I'd taken a pic or 2 before we got started on it all, but imagine a fairly bright pink with a country heart border around the top and muddy brown colored carpet. I am SO pleased thus far! Still need to paint the inside of the closet, and make curtains. At least those shouldn't take long! Then stuff gets to start... Sat, 24 Jan 2009 14:46:31 EST DD's 'new' bedroom Today I finished cutting and installing the trim in DD's bedroom. Cleaned up my mess, and I have to say, the room looks good! Still need to paint the inside of the closet and make curtains - oh - and get her stuff moved back in! But I'm so glad to say the space is as nice as it is! I really hope to have a few minutes to take a couple pics and post at least one of them. This room is mostly lavendar, with some other purple shades and border/floor blue. It was really quite funny this evening wh... Fri, 23 Jan 2009 23:51:18 EST Continuing Concrete Floor Saga I blogged earlier about redoing the concrete floor in DD's bedroom... the saga continues. Yes, spent those hours stripping the extra epoxy, got some concrete primer, applied that and let it dry. So far so good... Then yesterday it was finally time to put down the first coat of stain. Hmm... looked a little orangy, but maybe it will dry a better color. Some things do that... The paint chip for the stain was NOT orangy and looked pretty good up against the lavender wall. Stain dries. This is no... Thu, 15 Jan 2009 16:47:28 EST Bootcamp and remodel progress Have a FEW minutes to write... Days 2 and 3 of bootcamp - did fine. Workouts pretty easy for me. Using 5# weights where those called for. Seems a good weight! Have been 'making do' since I don't have a stability ball. Today, I watched the video and I think I would really have enjoyed that workout, but it wasn't one that I could do without the ball. I hope the rest of the workouts don't require a ball...
I did keep very busy today working on DD's bedroom floor. This has to make good prog... Wed, 7 Jan 2009 18:34:52 EST New You Bootcamp Challenge Day 1 - did the video - it was really pretty easy, and I think I was doing it right! Looked on the fitness tracker and that one didn't show up - I hope they get it updated. There was 1 video w/ kickboxing, but it claimed to burn 70 cal in 10 min and I don't believe I worked that hard!

That said, the challenge for today was to update where I am starting.

Height - 5'2" Don't expect that to change!
Weight - 117 this morning - fully expect this to change, and rapidly!... Sun, 4 Jan 2009 15:05:17 EST Happy New Year! It's that time of year and a good opportunity to reflect on the past year and set some goals for the new. I've never been much of a one for 'resolutions', but setting goals is different. Last year when I first started trying to get healthier, the goal was pretty nebulous. Get Healthier. Sounds great, but what does that mean, and how do I go about it?

I started first by seeing a chiropracter for a shoulder problem I was having. Move it a certain way and it REALLY hurt. It got worke... Thu, 1 Jan 2009 21:38:09 EST Christmas Tree

I finally got enough decluttering done that I could put up our little tree. It's on top of our buffet (which hasn't been used as such...) and looking quite nice. Last year we did our big tree for the first time in several years, but I was quite happy to go back to the little one this year. It's just a nice size and simple to decorate. This is the first time I've ever used bead garland on it, but I rather like the way... Thu, 11 Dec 2008 14:17:57 EST Porch windows

Here are pics of the windows I've been talking about making custom for the back porch. We got DH the smoker right after Thanksgiving - first time I've actually been power shopping on Black Friday! Glad they had quite a few of them - when I got there with the shopping cart, there were only 2 besides the 1 my DD was sitting on! VERY glad it wasn't as ... Thu, 11 Dec 2008 14:07:26 EST Blooming Tuesday 10/28 Has it been that long since I posted a Tues bloom? Here's my favorite for today - a toad lily. Cool flowers! This and some roses are about all that's blooming right now. Tue, 28 Oct 2008 20:23:14 EST Don't let bad situations get you down today! I'm trying to make it a good day, regardless... My DH called me at 2:15 this morning, and that meant it wasn't good... He was parked at a truckstop, sleeping, and a new driver came in late, started to park in the spot next to my DH, and heavily damaged the driver's side of his truck and sleeper. The truck IS driveable, but has a hole in the sleeper. He can deliver the load he's on, and hopefully get another one that will take him up to IL where he got his truck - and they have a really good ... Wed, 15 Oct 2008 10:19:00 EST Blooming Tues Sep 23 08 I went outside with my camera this morning to see just what WAS blooming. Here are the plants that are boasting flowers. Especially vibrant are the Spider Lilies. I love the week or so that they are in bloom - so pretty! I was surprised to see the blooms on my Josee Lilac, then remembered it is supposed to rebloom! Anybody know what the bug is on the pomegranite? Weird little thing... Tue, 23 Sep 2008 12:58:35 EST New Room Sep 18 I'm working on getting the backing up on the house side wall. Ran into a glitch today as I was putting up paneling. When the studs were put up, they weren't measured quite right and there isn't a stud where I need it to be. The luan doesn't lay flat without a lot of nails - and really needs the edges secured. I got ahold of my builder and he's going to come tomorrow and add a stud where I need it. Then I can continue and finish up the back and start the shelves. It's going to be interesting... Thu, 18 Sep 2008 19:02:07 EST New Room Sep 15 No pics today, just a report... The weather was beautiful today and I did take advantage of it. Too many interruptions, so didn't get as much done as I would have liked, but I did make it past a dangerous stall point and have started cutting the sheets of microfiber board. Had to purchase a new saw because the old circular saw we had wouldn't handle it. It took a little trial and error to get the cuts the way I want them, but it will work. Tomorrow I should have the rest of the uprights cut a... Mon, 15 Sep 2008 21:14:08 EST New Room Sep 13 Ok. It's been awhile since I posted an update here. Thursday I tried to cut some of my microfiber board to get started on shelves. I knew the table saw wasn't going to be very good for that - the board is far too heavy to be pushing it along, holding it up.... and I don't own a good plywood saw with all its framework to handle such things. So... circular saw it is. But my circular saw is pretty old, and although I clamped down a board to use as a fence and keep it straight, it had SO much tro... Sat, 13 Sep 2008 15:46:22 EST Mystery Herb I've mentioned this plant before, but finally got a pic. Does anyone know what this is? If you've seen this lovely herb and know what it is, please tell me! I got it at a plant swap with our herb society, but its tag disappeared before I memorized what it was... I just know it is growing quite nicely and I'm hoping it is a perennial! Mon, 8 Sep 2008 23:00:42 EST Black Swallowtail Caterpillars Thursday afternoon I went outside to cut some parsley for a dish I was making for supper. There wasn't very much left! This pic is from Friday morning. I didn't have anything else in the garden that they would really want to eat, and given what they are, I certainly didn't want them to starve to death, so I have built them a caterpillar house and bought some parsley for them to eat. I can also look for carrot tops, dill, fennel or Queen Anne's Lace. I'm going to give some of them to families... Sat, 6 Sep 2008 22:14:55 EST New Room Sep 6 Making progress! Got the textured ceiling paint on. Took 2 days for that because I ran out of paint. And unfortunately they don't sell it in 1 gallon containers, so to finish and area about 3'x10', had to spend that nearly $30 to get $10 worth of useable paint... I will have to see if I can come up with a project for the leftover. It actually looks kind of neat painted on a wood cutout. And I'd certainly have enough of it to do a lot! But that will be later - quite a bit later as there's so m... Sat, 6 Sep 2008 22:01:09 EST New Room Sep 3 More painting today! Got all the Kilz done in my room. That was about 3 hours - actually closer to 4, but I'll just count 3... When I do ceiling paint tomorrow, I REALLY need to wear a ball cap or shower cap or something. My hair is just a little grayer than it had been... At least I don't have any big splotches left up there! Or... maybe I do still have at least one... Wed, 3 Sep 2008 15:33:27 EST New Room Sep 2 Ok, so this isn't the Craft room, but I needed to work on the porch, too. Got everything Kilz'd that wasn't vinyl siding and today got the trim painted. I'm still deciding what to do with the lower wall. The concrete is going to get stained just like my craft room, although I may try to do it in one coat instead of two so it won't be as dark as my room. Although my DH really likes the craft room floor the way it is... I only logged 2 hours on the porch today, but it was really closer to 3. I... Tue, 2 Sep 2008 20:24:16 EST New Room Aug 30 Floor detail pic... I have 3 coats of sealer down on the floor now and am letting it cure. While it was doing that, I got the yard mostly mowed. DS was supposed to, but he asked to paint instead. So he worked on the walls and the unpainted part of the ceiling in the screen porch part. DD did more of the trim part. We're using oil-based Kilz for this exterior part. Clean-up is a pain, but I'm just going to throw away the roller brush and detail brush when we're done. Not worth the effort to cl... Sat, 30 Aug 2008 21:13:17 EST New Room Aug 29 The floor is getting there on the room! After letting the stain sit yesterday and cure, I put on the first coat of sealer this morning. Tried it first with a roller brush, but that didn't work well - left behind lots of bubbles and wasn't going on evenly. So I put on a disposable glove and got an old sock - laid it down with that. Worked pretty well. I'm going to put down another coat in about an hour. Fri, 29 Aug 2008 16:13:29 EST New Room Aug 27 I did finally get my floor all stained! Actually started it yesterday, but it became quite obviouse that I was going to need to re-do some of the acid wash. So yesterday I did that and scrubbed it really well to clean it up. With that much water, it didn't dry out soon enough to finish up the first coat. Got that done this morning, and then this afternoon I put on the 2nd coat of stain. Since I didn't really feel like getting out the paint sprayer and doing all the work it would take to get i... Wed, 27 Aug 2008 22:05:41 EST New room Aug 25 Over the weekend, I did get the floor and walls cleaned in my room. That was sweeping 3x, shop vacced the walls and floor, then scrubbed the floor. All ready to go in this morning while it was reasonably cool and lay the first coat of concrete stain. Got the fan in the window so air would pull through and keep everything well ventilated. Got on the gloves, opened the can of stain that had been delivered... and there was no color! So that meant a 20 minute drive (each way) to get the stain col... Mon, 25 Aug 2008 20:14:00 EST Working on my new room Our back porch is now a room and a screen room. (in pic, it's not quite done.) The room is to be my craft room and the screen room is going to be for the grill and pleasant seating. The contractors are done today and now it's my turn to get busy. First thing is to get the concrete cleaned again. I had already acid washed it, but didn't have time to get the stain and sealants down before work started. So now it's get all that done again. If I'm cleaning the walls and floor in there for an hou... Fri, 22 Aug 2008 18:13:58 EST 4/29/08 Beautiful day today - I hope spring last a really long time this year. Fat chance! Not an exercise day, but I did get to work in my garden for awhile. Got some weeding done and a few plants out of their pots and into the soil. Still have a bunch to get into containers.
Neatest thing today - saw what I currently think was an Indigo Bunting! Such a bright blue! Hope it comes back to visit my yard again 104
Tue, 29 Apr 2008 18:55:51 EST
