COLEOPTERRA's SparkPeople Blog COLEOPTERRA's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Summer Summer has come and gone away and while it was a great one for us, I am happy to see the cooler weather and the trees starting to lose their leaves. I love cool afternoons as that is when I get out and bike or run or hike and I don't sweat like a crazy woman as much!
I also have some kick butt Keen boots that have been laying in wait by the door just waiting for the weather to change so that my feet can be comforted with each step once again...dang flip flops and hot weather took a toll... Sun, 15 Sep 2013 20:26:29 EST Feeling 10 thousand times better The flu has left the house! Yay!!
We are all back on our feet and working at 100 percent...what a relief to be back!

In other news my weight is at a stand still, not moving one way or the other, been stuck here for months now. I am pretty sure I know why and that is less activity lately, between running my son to the hockey rink after school or my daughter to music lessons after school during the week and then hockey games and tournaments on the each and every weekend since ... Wed, 23 Jan 2013 23:04:52 EST Knocked down Last weekend was a not a healthy one in this house. All four of us...both kids, hubby and myself came down with a flu/virus that absolutely kicked our butts for at least 4 days. My youngest seemed to shake it quicker than the rest of us and was back up and out to school by Tuesday. My 12 year old is still home sick with a fever and dizzy spells. Greg and I are back to work and have been all week but today is actually the first day I feel heavy head, short of breath when I walk u... Fri, 18 Jan 2013 17:40:19 EST Onward and upward Seems like lately whenever I do a blog entry I complain about my foot (Plantar Fasciitis) and due to this condition my exercise routine has been greatly affected. I used to run and was planning on doing the C25K here on SP and was in week 6 when the pain in my foot was too great and I had to fast forward a year and a half and I almost have no pain in my foot anymore and it all started when summer ended and so did flip flop season! Amazingly real foot wear and some great insoles c... Sun, 6 Jan 2013 22:23:03 EST Feeling some love for my foot It's been a year and a half since this pain in my foot I like to refer to as Plantar fasciitis found a home in my left foot. I have had more bad days than good days lately but I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

My hubby bought me a pair of Keen boots for the fall and winter months ahead and with this first snap of cold weather I slipped on my new boots and headed out into the world. To my immense surprise and growing joy I found these boots to be a little ... Tue, 6 Nov 2012 22:53:22 EST To golf or bike...that was the question We are very lucky to have many outdoor options open to us and we try to involve the kids in as many of these options as possible so tonight when we put the question to our 9 year or bike? He replied with a resounding golf. Our 11 year old daughter was babysitting so she didn't have a say this time. We packed up our clubs and headed to our home golf course...3 minutes up the mountain.
I was kinda sad about golfing instead of biking since our weekend was filled with thunder a... Tue, 26 Jun 2012 01:55:55 EST Met a new friend While on a trek up to our favourite bike trail my husband and I came across this young fella who was just looking for an easy dinner...

He wasn't too interested in us...more interested in what was in the big red dumpster.
Sat, 16 Jun 2012 20:34:02 EST It's been awhile Wow my last blog entry was in December...yikes! Although I haven't been as active here on SP I have been keeping active in my offline life. We skied through the winter months and now with Spring on its way out and Summer heading in I have gotten in a few rides on my mountain bike.
This past April we took a trip to Turks and Caicos Island and my weight before we left was 163, when I returned it was 170. So now I am struggling to lose that weight all over again...frustrating for sure bu... Mon, 4 Jun 2012 02:05:43 EST Heading to the Ski hill Thankfully I can still move after a houseful of family and way too much food around. It has been a lovely Christmas season and I have so much to be grateful for, healthy children, happy family and never having to worry about where our next meal will come from. All of this and more I am so thankful for. I can celebrate the season with both sets of parents, with all siblings on both my side and dh's side, with all my nieces and nephews and with that I realize how very blessed I am this year.... Tue, 27 Dec 2011 01:26:20 EST Weigh in success I haven't weighed in for a few weeks now since things have slowed down in the workout department and my weight hasn't really done up no down. At any rate I hopped on this morning and was happily surprised to see a 2 pound loss. Although that might be directly due to the sick feeling I had after sliding into the snowbank 211 . Wed, 23 Nov 2011 23:08:23 EST Extreme Snowfall + Icy Roads = Car in Snowbank There has been a snowfall warning for the past two days and usually that isn't a big deal to me, in fact the first night of the snowfall warning I had to coach swim practice which is straight down the mountain from our place and other than visions of sliding down the highway I really wasn't too worried. As it turned out the roads were not so great but I luckily avoided the major areas that were backed up with traffic trying to get home amid the accidents and stopped vehicles. Two hours late... Fri, 18 Nov 2011 14:29:46 EST Changes in the weather We have been trying to take advantage of warmer weather while we still can, before the snow flies. Nothing wrong with snow but it does make hiking/biking and running the trails a bit trickier...although this year I would have to take a break anyway with this stubborn heel issue.

We have been getting in some nice easy walks with the whole family so all is good in my world.

I am keeping busy he... Tue, 1 Nov 2011 19:18:28 EST Plantar Fasciitis Yes that is my diagnosis from my doctor. With the heel pain getting worse I knew I needed to talk to her about it and she confirmed what I had been dreading.

I have always been the type of person who figures when injury or pain strike they will heal or go away on its own. When I broke my knuckle a few years back I remember sitting and crying to my husband as he sat in front of me holding my broken hand and saying "look it's going to be alright I can bend my fingers so they can'... Wed, 26 Oct 2011 12:02:14 EST Getting my feet wet...literally Its been a long long time since I was considered a competitive swimmer and once that part of my life was over I walked away from it never looking back. I pretty much was burnt out and frustrated with the sport of swimming and let my bitterness take over. When I left the swim world I had a few achievements to my name, I had made the Junior National team, the National team, a Summer games team for my province, had qualified for the Olympic Trials (didn't make the team though) and I had swam ... Wed, 19 Oct 2011 16:44:07 EST A running setback As I have blogged about recently I am dealing with some sort of injury to my heel. It has it's good days and bad days but it seems to bother me the most when I run. I have tried to take a week off running but still it persists. I guess I will have to give in and make an appointment to see my doctor.

So now I am off course with my 5k walk/run program 46 .

I think that bothers me more than anything since I was doing so well and was looking forward to the Tric... Wed, 12 Oct 2011 12:00:40 EST And then came the rain I have a friend, a really dear friend who has lost over 50 pounds since last summer. She worked hard to lose those pounds by going to WW meetings, exercising everyday of the week and being smart about what she put into her body.
Last night she called me to ask if I wanted to go for a hike with her this morning after the kids were dropped off at school. I said sure I would love some company out there on the trail. So morning arrives and it's of course raining...and my friend arrives ... Wed, 5 Oct 2011 00:34:48 EST Sore mouth = not much eating Had a wisdom tooth removed this morning and the freezing is just starting to come jaw is sore and the up and down motion that goes along with eating anything seems to make it hurt more. I had a cup of chicken noodle soup for lunch and it is looking like that will be supper too.

Hopefully tomorrow will be better although I am supposed to do salt water rinses every time I eat fun fun. Oh well it was a better option than keeping that tooth, it was causing me ... Thu, 29 Sep 2011 17:17:24 EST Where did my weekend go??? Oh yeah right I remember just a blur!

Friday - kids were off school all day so the day just kinda blended into the night

Saturday - all day golf tournament with DH's work crew, up early/to bed late

Sunday - up early, m0untain bike with friends/ two separate rides

all this equals a very tired/sore/rubbing my eyes/need to sit in the hot tub for a few hours and sleep kinda feeling for this chickadee.

102 Sun, 25 Sep 2011 20:59:13 EST Hiking with my boys And those boys consist of my hubby, our son and our pooch. We took advantage of the fantastic fall weather on Sunday and headed out to a local trail that winds along the majestic Columbia River. Our daughter missed out on the hike but got her own workout during her two softball practice 20 .

Today was day one of week two of my Walk/Run program. I am still enjoying it although my heel has been bugging me but I popped in to see my friend who is a physiotherapist and he t... Tue, 20 Sep 2011 15:26:10 EST Me 3 Excuses 0 I am an exercise excuse maker, I admit it. I have days when I let everyone else in the family take control and override my original plans. The kids keep getting older and with age comes more running them around, weekends completely belong to them and that is where my exercise gets left behind.
So when I signed up for the 5K Walk/Run and Trick or Treat Trot I was not completely sure this was going to pan out but in my mind I had big plans. I had planned to start the program the first w... Thu, 15 Sep 2011 13:17:41 EST This, that and the other We are finally getting some cooler weather, yay for that, I actually had the window open while I was running on the treadmill and I kept feeling the nice cool breeze that I am used to when out biking on the trail. I don't really enjoy running on the treadmill as I find it boring but I am not ready to run the hills in my area so any and all fresh air is welcome while running in place. I just finished my 2nd workout of the 5k walk/run program and still feeling pretty good. I do have some wei... Tue, 13 Sep 2011 16:02:46 EST First Walk/Run workout done... I finally started my walk/run routine yesterday, I say finally because I have been saying I would get started once the kids were back to school and technically I did but a week later than I expected.
It felt great and I am looking forward to tomorrow's run/walk. I am also wondering just how long it will take before I can breeze through my 25 minute workout at a run?? Alright I guess I need to take it slow and be happy with what I am accomplishing before rushing into the what/where/when... Mon, 12 Sep 2011 21:08:45 EST Walking with the family Tonight we went to a Spaghetti Supper that was hosted by our community centre and I knew there would be lots of pasta available as is normally the case whenever we attend one of these functions. We live in an area with a high Italian population and pretty much every supper function is pretty much pasta based and being the pasta lover that I am, it's a win/win situation for the most part (except for my waistline). Tonight however I figured out how to combat those extra calories that were so ... Sat, 10 Sep 2011 23:54:53 EST Back to the ole grind Yes it is that time again with the kids back to routine and my sleeping in out the window...ahh I loved it while it lasted. Even so I love the routine of back to school, kids in bed early (usually) activities starting back up, friends are more accessible and the weather is cooling down or at least it is supposed to. Someone needs to send a memo to Mother Nature as she seems to have missed pushing the Fall button here...we are still getting temps in the 30's and with that kind of warmth I feel... Fri, 9 Sep 2011 11:56:57 EST My old neglected friend Yes I know it's kooky to call the scale my friend but in so many ways that is how I look at it. Whether I hate it or love is my friend.

And today I stepped on that old friend to find I had lost 4 pounds since my last weigh in which was July 6th so I am happy to say that even though it isn't a huge loss it isn't a gain...bonus!

Yes me and the scale are friends.... for now

244 Wed, 24 Aug 2011 15:52:24 EST Dropping in Summer isn't officially over yet and we do have a few more weekends left to get out there and camp so I won't say "I'm back" just yet but...

I have been trying to keep my meal plans as normal as possible between meals over a campfire, night time roasting of marshmallows to smoosh between graham wafers and chunks of chocolate (for the kids of course, not me ;) and fast food outings while shopping for groceries during our camping trips...through all of this I haven't done too badly.... Tue, 23 Aug 2011 16:45:52 EST Theme and the food Traditionally each year we take a trip to the closest theme park around which is Silverwood Theme Park
in Idaho. We meet up with Greg's sister and her crew for a few days of fun in the sun. The part that isn't as much fun is the food choices at the park, seems like everywhere I turn there is ice cream, dipping dots, waffle cakes, elephant ears, kettle corn, pop pop and more pop but very little in the way of healthy treats like frozen yogurt or f... Mon, 11 Jul 2011 16:10:22 EST As I expected Today's weigh in showed a gain...I am officially back where I started 39 . Now that I have that out of my system it's time to stop feeling sad about it and hop back on the bike, tie up my shoes for a hike and get out there with a renewed vigor.
Spark it up and Spark on!!!
67 309 67 295 67 312 67 Wed, 6 Jul 2011 13:03:42 EST Summer Vacation has arrived Well for the kids anyway! I have just spent the last week back in Saskatchewan as we took the kids to stay with their grandparents for two weeks but only one of mine stayed, our son is still not ready to spend two weeks away from home...he feels a bit sad about not being ready but I keep telling him that there is always next year.
The original plan was to meet Greg's parents halfway and make the exchange but with it being the Canada Day long weekend there wasn't alot of rooms available ... Mon, 4 Jul 2011 17:30:48 EST Need a new week After my fall on Wednesday and more biking on Thursday, the bruises and soreness really started to set in on Friday. I decided I would give the bike a rest and take to the hills on foot instead. Thankfully I am sitting here typing this but feeling a whole lot less sore and tired than I did before. Sometimes I forget I am not a teenager anymore and I am not going to just pop right back to normal when I am injured.
I have some hikes planned for this week as well as taking my son for a... Sun, 26 Jun 2011 15:46:50 EST It was bound to happen And will definitely happen again...yes I wiped out coming down the trail today...not once but twice. The first one was avoidable as I was trying to demonstrate to a friend who is new to mountain biking how to ride over a big rock...and instead of showing her how it should be done I of course took a spill and most likely scared her to death. My second wipe out happened on the last bit of downhill on the trail where it was very rocky and pebbly and my back tire just kinda slid out on me and d... Wed, 22 Jun 2011 23:38:03 EST Another Summit to see A friend suggested we take the dogs for a hike today and since I have lived in this area for years now and am only recently getting out for hikes and bike rides I thought this was the perfect opportunity to check out a trail that was new to me. It was a steep enough climb but not so much that I couldn't take the whole family along and it kept my heart rate up but the best part was the view from the ridge...beautiful. I do feel so blessed to live in an area of tremendous scenery. After taki... Thu, 16 Jun 2011 17:07:01 EST Some thunder, lots of rain, a bike and a race for home Last night we took our son out for another bike ride at his request, it was raining a wee bit and their golf lessons were canceled as well as our daughter's softball game so it was clear sailing on the biking front. I knew the rain was coming but thought we had lots of time to get up to the top and bike down before it started to pour...well let's just say I was wrong...wwwaaayyyy wrong! The first hour of the ride was fine but the last 15 minutes through the forest to home it started to pour... Tue, 14 Jun 2011 23:29:16 EST Rain rain go away I updated my facebook status with this little ditty the other day...Rain rain go away I wanted to bike Green Door today...

Green Door is a mountain bike trail near my house and we had plans to ride it this week but of course in came the rain that day and wouldn't let up until hubby's tee off time...insert eye roll even though I didn't get outdoors to exercise that day I did get in my Wii Fit time which kinda balances everything out I think. I most definitely prefer to ge... Fri, 10 Jun 2011 17:33:35 EST Looking more and more like a routine So after blogging about getting back in the mountain bike saddle (thanks Droplet for that description 20 ) I have since been out two more times with another date set for tomorrow morning. I am feeling like for the first time in a long while I am setting a healthy pace for myself.
Last night hubby and I took our son along with us for a ride (our son's first real mountain trail). We wanted to see how he would do and more importantly if he would enjoy it or if he would complain ... Tue, 7 Jun 2011 16:55:17 EST Getting back to it A couple of years ago my hubby and I decided we wanted to try mountain biking, we live in a mountainous area with many bike/hiking trails so it wasn't a stretch to think we might like it. We bought one bike and thought we would just share it, we had friends who were married and would ride with us. I would ride with my friend one night and he would ride with his on a different night and so on. It worked great until one ride he crashed and messed up the brake but instead of telling me the br... Fri, 3 Jun 2011 14:25:52 EST A new start once again Here I sit feeling happy and excited for a new week to begin. This is the week that will change my life, this is the week I will start following the exercise programs that are available to me, this is the week I will watch my blood glucose levels more closely, this is the week I will eat better, this is one great week to be me 244 Sun, 29 May 2011 13:13:33 EST
