I now enjoy snorkeling and the depth of the water doesn't seem to bother me much. I tend to panic more if there are a lot of people around but if I were the only person in the ocean, I think I'd be fine. I understand my hubby's concern because if I do panic, I could drown so I've been working on spending more time in the big (deep) pool trying to get more comfortable.

Last week it occurred t... Thu, 11 Sep 2014 09:35:26 EST Time To Sink Or Swim I'm not sure what made me do it but I decided the other day to set a goal of jumping off the edge of the deep pool into the water. I even posted my goal on Facebook to hold myself accountable. I was very touched by how much support and encouragement I received after my post.

I've been working on my fear of water for awhile and have gotten to the point where I could ease myself into the water and slowly work myself up to putting my head underwater. I would swim down and back holding... Fri, 27 Jun 2014 00:28:09 EST I Went Into The "Big" (Deep) Pool! Yesterday I had an incredible accomplishment - I did my swim-ish in the "big" pool which is 8 feet deep! I planned to do my swim-ish in the inside "small" pool (only 5' deep at the deepest) like I normally do and some of the ladies I know were talking about how cold the small pool was and how warm it was in the big pool. The big pool is outside covered by a huge canvas tent and the heat was set very warm. Margaret, who is a friend from aqua class, talked me into trying to do my swim-ish outsi... Fri, 29 Mar 2013 09:04:37 EST Marathon Training Starts Today! Today is the day I start training for my first full marathon which is the end of July. I have been reading tons of material about running, strength training, nutrition, and mental preparedness. I've got my training schedule which takes into account the shorter races and relays that I have signed up for between now and then. I'm ready to get started and see how I do.

I have picked a trail marathon as my first. It's a very small race held in a beautiful park in downtown Portland. I... Mon, 18 Mar 2013 10:29:28 EST Interesting Incident At The Pool On Friday, I went to the pool for the first time since the trip with my trainer. My gym has three pools: an outdoor pool which goes up to 8 feet deep (I've never set foot in it), an indoor pool which goes up to 5 feet deep, and a kiddie pool next to it where swim lessons are held.

I was taking it easy and everything was going well until a group of about 8 kids got into the kiddie pool for their lessons. Being the last day of the session, the parents were allowed to sit in chairs o... Sun, 28 Oct 2012 10:37:29 EST My Progress At The Pool Yesterday, I met with my trainer at the pool. He had agreed to work with me on overcoming my fear of water. It was a true test of my trust and faith in him. We started slowly, just sitting on the pool steps and talking. We slowly worked our way down the steps and deeper and deeper into the water. It felt a little tough to breathe but I was doing alright.

He worked with me to lower my face into the water while holding my nose then again without holding my nose. I would try each thin... Thu, 4 Oct 2012 22:22:35 EST Heading To The Pool Today I am heading to the pool. I'm meeting my trainer there to work with him on overcoming my fear of water. I've made so much progress but I've stalled at the point of putting my head under water without holding my nose. My trainer is an ex-marine who is water-safety certified and he feels that he can help me take that next step.

I trust him completely because we have worked together a long time and he has rehabbed me from two shoulder surgeries and a serious hip injury. I keep p... Wed, 3 Oct 2012 09:23:58 EST Decision Time It's time to make a very tough decision. I'm working on overcoming a huge fear of water and I've reached a difficult point. I can now get in the water without breaking out in hives. I can do an ugly backstroke and an even uglier breaststroke as long as my head stays above water. I can even put my head under water as long as I'm holding my nose (I have goggles on since I wear contacts).

I still experience panic if I get water in my nose or mouth. It's not even that I swallow any of ... Sat, 29 Sep 2012 11:27:56 EST Best Bad Run EVER! Yesterday I left home early to pick up one of my favorite running buddies (AKASHELLY). I have been struggling lately with a huge desire to quit strength training and I was really looking forward to talking things out with her on our way down to Silver Falls State Park where we would be running. During the almost two hour drive, we talked and laughed and I was feeling much better.

We had decided to run Silver Falls as a training run for the half marathon we have there in November. T... Sun, 16 Sep 2012 11:25:40 EST Overcoming My Fear – Part 2 – The Why I have a HUGE fear of water but it hasn’t always been that way. When I was little, my parents signed me up for tons of swim lessons. I never actually learned to do any of the swim strokes but I could float on my back for hours. I enjoyed being in the water and spent most of the summers during my high school years floating on inner tubes in the creeks of Kentucky. After I moved to California, I loved going to the beach or sailing with my boyfriend every weekend. I always thought that being at ... Tue, 11 Sep 2012 07:41:22 EST Overcoming My Fear – Part 1 – The How I have a HUGE fear of water – to the point that I once went 22 years without setting foot in a pool, lake or ocean. I would break out in hives just thinking about getting into water. The first day of trying to get in the pool at my local gym resulted in the gym owner approaching me to make sure I was alright (and probably to make sure I didn’t have anything that was contagious!). I was an absolute mess! The Why of the fear is Part 2 of this blog.

Three years ago, I decided to try ... Tue, 11 Sep 2012 07:39:21 EST I did my first Muddy Buddy! This morning, I did the Muddy Buddy with AKASHELLY as Team Hot Mess! We had a blast!! We did every obstacle as a team except for the rope climb where we were able to get to the top knot but not all the way up to ring the bell. Other than that, we completed the Over/Under/Over, the Team Traverse Wall, the Diamond Balance Beams, the Reverse Walls, the Tunnels, the Not So Low Walls, the Cargo Climb, the Spider Web , the Slide for Your Life, the Buddy Blockade, the Slippery Mountain and ended wit... Sun, 19 Aug 2012 22:58:37 EST How Bad Do I Want It? I've been struggling with motivation lately. I'm still running and eating relatively well but I can't seem to push myself to do that little "extra" bit that will make me really successful. I'm not sure why I'm okay with "good enough."

I watched a video the other night that asked "How Bad Do You Want it?". It was really inspiring and I'm hoping that it will help me to do the things I need to in order to get better and not settle for good enough. I think my bigger problem is actually... Wed, 8 Aug 2012 22:04:27 EST Get Out Of My Way It's time to get out of my own way.

I was slowly gaining weight by making excuses for my poor eating choices and saying that I would start eating better "tomorrow". I was slowly hurting my body by doing what I wanted to do (or not do) as far as exercise goes rather than listening to my trainer. I use a great trainer who is helping me to overcome some of my physical weaknesses but I was refusing to listen to him out of sheer stubbornness.

I finally decided to start liste... Sun, 13 May 2012 09:45:33 EST It's Actually Working... I had decided in February to go back to old (good) habits after realizing that I was slowly creeping back up to my old weight. I returned to logging all of my food - no major restrictions other than to log EVERYTHING that I ate. My laziness of not wanting to get up and put the food into my log outweighed my desire to eat something. I often mistake boredom for hunger and this is a really helpful way for me to recognize the difference.

The other benefit of returning to what had worke... Fri, 13 Apr 2012 09:47:56 EST Back To Old Habits My frustration has finally reached its limit. I am going back to what allowed me to lose weight three years ago. I have regained 20 of the 30 pounds that I had lost.

I will log ALL of my food and do strength training twice a week. I have the added advantage that I am now a runner, which I wasn't three years ago. Logging my food is my goal for Lent, I have to do the ST to keep my hip strong after an injury and I love running so that one is easy for me.

I eat out of bored... Fri, 24 Feb 2012 10:18:20 EST It's About Time...No, It's Not. I am a runner. I love being able to say that. I have now run five half-marathons and I continue to be surprised by the fact that I can run at all. I was told in college that I should never do anything more strenuous than walking due to a heart issue. After years of doing everything I could to deal with the problem, I was finally given clearance to start leading a more active life. I started with a three mile fitness walk in 2009, then progressed to doing 5K races (running a little more of eac... Thu, 8 Dec 2011 15:33:40 EST
