CLUMBOY's SparkPeople Blog CLUMBOY's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community friday--ipod struggle continues good morning! well rob tackled the ipod last night, still to no avail. he has determined that our computer is not seeing it properly as a device--and is treating it like it's a zip drive. we can't get it to sync up when we add new music. we tried making a whole new file--didn't work. he spent quite awhile trying to find a solution on line, but so far came up empty. oh well--I have music on it that I can listen to, but i'm getting kind of tired of the same mixes all the time.
and he... Fri, 22 Sep 2017 07:44:46 EST thursday--a bittersweet day good morning! yesterday I spent some time with my friend, Kathy, and made a new friend in the form of Kathy's friend, Darlene. Darlene is not a potter, but she spent many years working with clay as a production former and decorator of slab pieces that were made into refrig. magnets sold through a drugstore chain in California. she also learned china painting and painted and sold decorated porcelain slips. earlier this year she GAVE me 500 pounds of boxed clay that I can reclaim, and yeste... Thu, 21 Sep 2017 07:45:15 EST tuesday shambles turns 10! birthday pic good morning! yesterday was dorijane's monthly chiro visit. she has been a little sore of late, but the dr. didn't find anything unusual. so he adjusted her back and gave her an adequan shot (her monthly dose) and set 12 acupuncture needles. she acts like she feels better today. the weather broke last night and we had thunderstorms, so I am guessing that helped her too.
decided I am spending this entire week working on glazing. I have GOT to get a routine down for this--I am reason... Tue, 19 Sep 2017 07:36:23 EST monday good morning! hope everyone had a good weekend. time to get dressed and take ralphie to the park. have a great Monday!
and yes--rob lost another two pounds this week! added legumes this week--fingers crossed that I can tolerate them. Mon, 18 Sep 2017 08:08:30 EST monday good morning! hope everyone had a good weekend. time to get dressed and take ralphie to the park. have a great Monday!
and yes--rob lost another two pounds this week! added legumes this week--fingers crossed that I can tolerate them. Mon, 18 Sep 2017 08:08:29 EST friday good morning! got my pitchers handled and a tea bowl carved with little turtles. here are some pics of my last few days work. first are some little bottles I did while working on learning to "belly out". I still haven't mastered this very rounded shape, but these are better. at least they stayed together and didn't collapse.

next are mugs, and mugs and pitchers. I tried one of each for... Fri, 15 Sep 2017 08:00:20 EST thursday hi-posting later than normal--I had a 7 am dentist appt. which means I have to get up at 5-ish and leave the house at 6. which then means that I wake up at TWO and keep checking the clock until 5 (I hate alarm clocks). anyway--all was well even though I had to drive the hour it takes to get there through really dense fog. I know the way very well, but managed to almost miss 2 different turns because I couldn't see them coming!
mr. Wilson the rooster is better--I had a little hen who I... Thu, 14 Sep 2017 11:50:56 EST tuesday good morning! waiting for a delivery truck to arrive--have no idea of when it's supposed to get here. and this morning I went to let the chickens out and mr. Wilson, my big rooster is wheezing away. never had this happen before. so I caught him and put him by himself in the small henhouse. going to give him some vitamin water and hope whatever it is isn't catching. I called rob to see if he could stop someplace on his lunch and get some antibiotics. I have never had any kind of respira... Tue, 12 Sep 2017 10:29:32 EST monday--vacation is over good morning! rob went back to work yesterday, he had a nice vacation--we took a little time off and hit the artisan fair in st. joe Michigan, shopped for cars and went to noa noa one night for dinner. the rest of the time we worked on two things--building another work surface for the office--he is planning to work from home more, which is great. I love it when he works from home--the day is so much more relaxed and so is he. I rearranged some stuff, moved the elliptical trainer into my ... Mon, 11 Sep 2017 07:47:45 EST friday hi! quick entry--we worked all day yesterday and the third window is UP!!!! rob did a wonderful job on it. today we cut and replace the metal panels all around it.
have a lovely Friday! Fri, 8 Sep 2017 06:50:49 EST wednesday--back on the scale good morning! rob is on vacation this week, so i'm not checking in every day. Saturday we took ralphie and went to St. Joe Michigan. they had their artisan fair going on--so we milled around in the crowd. unlike the art festival which has become too snooty--the artisan fair welcomes dogs (it's the same site--a bluff overlooking silver beach and lake Michigan) and ralphie saw lots of doggies--one even (a Chihuahua) was smaller than he was! all the dogs are well behaved and everybody acted ... Wed, 6 Sep 2017 09:15:00 EST monday hope everyone is having a fine labor day holiday! Mon, 4 Sep 2017 15:03:38 EST friday good morning--well on his weigh in, rob was down another two pounds! very pleased for him. I am still not using the scale, but the mirror is telling me I am getting smaller, and my clothes are confirming it. interestingly, I have reached a place that I have encountered many times before--a strange anxiety that I am not loosing but gaining weight. its a weird phenomenon, in the past it has actually brought on panic episodes. for some reason my mind becomes convinced that my weight loss ha... Fri, 1 Sep 2017 07:54:31 EST thursday good morning! yesterday was a pretty good day--the weather was lovely and I actually did a little work on the weeds. since I have decided that I am not selling daylilies anymore, I have neglected that area and it's very weedy. I am going to relocate all my plants into borders, so there really isn't any reason to weed the rows now--so I have just let the majority of it go--and it looks pretty wild out there. but I did some tidying and it's a bit less crazy now.
got handles on my platt... Thu, 31 Aug 2017 07:59:02 EST wednesday good morning. well--pottery was on my agenda yesterday, but it didn't happen. cindy had some free time and came by for a visit. it's been ages since I have seen her, and it was wonderful to catch up. she was very ill with pneumonia over the winter and I was really worried about her. but she's all well now, and back into her very busy schedule with Dwayne. they finished all the construction at the big vet clinic and are now working at home to get a couple barns repaired and battened down... Wed, 30 Aug 2017 08:14:58 EST tuesday good morning! grocery store yesterday managed a little throwing but it was SO BAD. I was tired and in a rush, did manage to end up with one platter out of the three I tried. decided to quit there because I could tell things were not going to get better. rob was tired too when he got home--we were both just kind of "out of it" for the evening.
today working on thinning my cookbook herd, and roasted red peppers for the freezer.
have a great Tuesday! Tue, 29 Aug 2017 07:50:53 EST monday--lots of sweat and reclaim lumber and dinner at NOA NOA!! good morning! well it's Monday and the second of three windows is now installed in the barn! it took about a day and a half to frame in the opening and put in the window and then cover the outside with the old metal, but it's done and rob did a great job! this old barn is the remaining half of the pole barn that we de-constructed last year. I think it's about 30 x 30 (I am lousy at estimating sizes, however, so don't quote me) with a concrete floor, old drywall and a leaky roof. but it i... Mon, 28 Aug 2017 08:48:47 EST forgetting to eat good morning! did the park yesterday with ralphie and shambles, 20 min. of total gym, made 5 more little plates, got some glazing done. a good day all in all. and in a very interesting twist, I forgot to eat.
this isn't unusual for some people. it is nearly unheard of for me. I was raised by a mom who ate 3 squares a day, and made sure we grew up with 3 balanced meals each day. I have always been this way--I can tell if I have missed a meal, and will eat 3 meals a day, even if the... Fri, 25 Aug 2017 07:54:55 EST thursday--the elusive atkins "edge" good morning! well--ardene came by and got her shelving--she was thrilled with it. she is organizing a big narrow closet in her new sewing room for her fabrics, and this unit will be ideal. its a wall mount system of white coated wire--and the brackets have a groove in them that accepts a wire basket, and a wire shelf that tops each basket. I think we had 8 or 10 shelf/basket combos in all, and the mounting brackets that she can cut down and reconfigure to fit the space. I am so glad I t... Thu, 24 Aug 2017 07:58:16 EST wednesday--pots and more pots good morning! well I did my little driveabout yesterday--didn't find anything earth shaking, but I did go into kohls and try on a few clothes. actually found a top I liked (rare event) but I didn't buy it. whoever designs the current fashions today never talked to me about what I like to wear. here's what I hate:
filmy fabric
fussy detail
uneven hems
dorky sleeves
scoopy, deep v, square necklines
gathers and smocking
get the picture? basically almost eve... Wed, 23 Aug 2017 08:01:30 EST tuesday good morning! its raining here--a nice steady soaker. we badly need it. decided I am going to make a change of pace for myself and go into town for a little shopping. don't really need anything other than a change. i am in a serious emotional rut here lately--the only thing i can think is that its some kind of mild depression hanging on after the loss of my folks. hoping that the fact that i recognize it is the first stage of throwing it off. i am keeping busy but have just sort of rem... Tue, 22 Aug 2017 08:10:39 EST monday--darkness at midday good afternoon. couldn't post earlier, rob worked from home today. I don't know why I was worried about the eclipse, but I was, and he can work from home almost as easily as going in, so he opted to stay here so I wouldn't be worried about him all day. we didn't get totality where we are--about 85 percent--it just looked like twilight for a little while, and the crickets started singing. I was down struggling on my wheel during most of it--apparently a solar eclipse is NOT a good time to ... Mon, 21 Aug 2017 18:57:25 EST friday/saturday good morning--its very early on Saturday morning--woke up about 2 to the sound of a thunderstorm--now it's approaching 5 am and I haven't been back to sleep--my usual pattern.
felt a lot better yesterday--and got a lot done. dorijane to the chiropractor--she was doing pretty well--he adjusted her back and gave her the adequan shot and acupuncture, and recommended some eye lubricant (genteal). stopped by the drug store on the way home and grabbed some so I could start her on it right a... Sat, 19 Aug 2017 04:55:58 EST thursday--tomatoes finally done! good morning! we finished the tomatoes last night--14 pints.

reloaded the kiln and carved a pot yesterday.

the purple you see is wax--the leather hard clay is covered with underglaze, then waxed, then carved back through. not sure how I will glaze this at the end--a lot depends on what i... Thu, 17 Aug 2017 10:54:10 EST cooking chorizo good morning! okay--this morning for breakfast I had to cook rob some chorizo. he found a recipe in one of the new cookbooks he wanted to try. he loves breakfast sausage (isn't fond of it any other time, strangely enough) and this was a sort of scramble with eggs, green pepper, onion and chorizo. he had never had chorizo, so we got a half pound from the meat counter and this morning I had to cook about half of it.
you have to understand, I can NOT handle the smell of cooking meat. ... Wed, 16 Aug 2017 08:47:23 EST tuesday-- dutch baby pancake and other stories good morning! clouding up here--might get some rain, which would be welcome.
this morning I tried making a dutch baby pancake out of one of the new cookbooks. heated up the cast iron pan in the oven and poured the batter in. it turned out fine--kind of like a giant crepe. rob adored it, so I can see I will be making them more in the future. yesterday we had the orange Julius thing again and I tried a keto recipe for a minute muffin. her recipe was quite different--used a fair amo... Tue, 15 Aug 2017 07:21:54 EST monday--reflecting good morning! hope everyone had a good weekend. we got some outside work done and groceries and stuff. I have about another 12# of tomatoes sitting here--going to just can crushed tomatoes this time--probably today. our upper patio is roughed out--the retaining wall is done and I have been filling the 3 ft. border that surrounds it with daylily seedlings. rob extended the electric line over to the spot where he intends to build a small outdoor kitchen, so now we are at the point of level... Mon, 14 Aug 2017 08:04:36 EST thursday--just one of those days yes--Thursday was a day that just went off the rails. not so much in a bad way--but I was frustrated and upset by the end of it. got ralphie to the park, and chickens taken care of in the morning, and was getting around to the chore I had chosen--sponging and tidying my greenware so I could bisque fire it. that's a long, fiddley job but it needs to be done before firing, since the clay is much easier to clean up before it's fired. then my friend sherri dropped in--she had knee surgery rec... Fri, 11 Aug 2017 08:21:08 EST thursday--more pottery adventures and a longer run good morning! yesterday I made ralphie upset--I left him at home and ran at the park by myself. sometimes I just want to concentrate on my run and not have to keep tabs on him too. I started using my ipod touch again--for some reason now I want to listen to the paced music again. found out that 168 beats a minute is my sweet spot--that puts me between a 12 and 13 min. mile--a little lower if I really stretch my short legs out. it's funny--I have never thought about it before--I am a pret... Thu, 10 Aug 2017 08:40:33 EST wednesday--pottery misadventures good morning. the pottery lurches ever forward--my practice time has been quite sketchy of late, so when I sit down at the wheel it's always a crapshoot. first off--yesterday out of curiousity I watched a youtube clip of the pottery scene from "ghost". I had never seen it, but some potters who throw in public put out a tip jar and "charge" 5.00 for any reference made by spectators to the scene. it was about what I expected--the part where he touches the clay and collapses it is particular... Wed, 9 Aug 2017 08:46:39 EST tuesday good morning! blueberries yesterday, strawberries today. so far, so good. and rob is ecstatic because I figured out how to make his favorite dessert in the world that I bet I haven't made for 25 years. it's just the old fashioned jello with whipped cream mixed in--but I was reading in my atkins book and came across it--lo and behold, it is a non-carb dessert if you use sugar free jello! so I whipped up a batch and we ate it over several days last week. we don't eat it every day, and cert... Tue, 8 Aug 2017 08:18:42 EST sunday--food all day--nothing but food. okay--no--I didn't eat all day long. was supposed to be rainy, and we were kind of in a " don't want to work outside" mood, so first we went to Costco, then finished the grocery shopping at our regular store. by the time that was all done, we were starving, so we hit a local salad bar and had a nice carb conscious salad for lunch. on home to putting all the groceries away, then time to start canning. we had decided to use up some of our tomatoes (you can only dehydrate so many--and we did... Sun, 6 Aug 2017 19:47:35 EST friday--sink is fixed! good morning! well the sink is all fine now. very nice plumber came out in the early afternoon and by 3 pm it was all done. he rerouted everything to correct some plumbing mistakes that rob had made when we first plumbed it (this was one of the first jobs he ever did in this house and had no idea what he was doing--the fact that it lasted 20-plus years is testament to the fact that he can pretty much muddle through anything and get a decent result). moved the disposal from one side to the... Fri, 4 Aug 2017 08:09:33 EST thursday good morning. rob is working from home today because our kitchen sink drain sprang a leak--so far he hasn't been able to fix it after struggling for several hours last night. hope for better results today. Thu, 3 Aug 2017 08:26:25 EST Wednesday--wild weather and breakfast shake success! good morning! last night everything was calm and then this mad thunderstorm just developed right over our area. it was quite small, but pretty strong and it just sat here for about an hour. guessing we got more than an inch of rain--for an extended period of time it was raining so hard I think the visibility was probably close to zero. I would have hated to be trying to drive in it. then the hail started--probably dime size--but it went ON and ON and ON. bouncing off the windows and mak... Wed, 2 Aug 2017 07:44:47 EST tuesday good morning! spinning clay today, total gym and shambles and ralphie to the park. also have to put a load of tomatoes in the dehydrator.
ran yesterday and dug out another load of daylilies. we finished the lower patio earlier this summer and rob is on a roll now to do the upper one. stage one is a block wall, so we spent the weekend hauling block. here is our lovely lower patio--at the beginning of the spring it was a total wreck--not at all what it looks like now. rob redid all t... Tue, 1 Aug 2017 08:16:03 EST hi everybody! hi folks! been thinking about you all. for some reason I fell away from here, once again as sometimes happens. I can't explain why--it's just the way I am. haven't been sparking exactly, but rob and I started atkins a month ago and it's going pretty well. of course he is blowing me right out of the water with his results, but I expected that. the good news is he is VERY committed to the idea, and ... Mon, 31 Jul 2017 08:05:40 EST hi everybody! hi folks! been thinking about you all. for some reason I fell away from here, once again as sometimes happens. I can't explain why--it's just the way I am. haven't been sparking exactly, but rob and I started atkins a month ago and it's going pretty well. of course he is blowing me right out of the water with his results, but I expected that. the good news is he is VERY committed to the idea, and it's paying off big time for him--to the tune of nearly 20 pounds. my aversion to the scal... Mon, 31 Jul 2017 08:05:36 EST monday--total gym recap good morning! thought today i would finally update on the total gym challenge i did and record my experience.
i have seen the challenge on the infomercials and figured out that the exercise routine is on a vimeo clip, so i decided to give it a shot. since i didn't have any kind of written protocol i made up my own. since it is 14 workouts in 19 days, i decided to do three days on and one rest day. made a little sheet to cross off and keep track of the days.
first off--let me tel... Mon, 6 Feb 2017 07:46:04 EST wednesday--regaining sanity??? maybe???? good morning! well last night i think i actually slept for a period of hours without interruption. we are sleeping in the living room and i sacked out on the couch instead of the floor. dorijane and ralphie joined me, rob snuggled into his recliner and shambles settled on her floor mat, with her cone on. about 4:30 i woke up and remembered i had forgotten to cover the pots i had thrown tuesday, so i went to the basement and did that and a little glazing. came back up and popped a pottery... Wed, 1 Feb 2017 07:14:04 EST geez--what day is it? okay--i have drifted away again--last tuesday shambles swallowed a rock--by wednesday afternoon it was apparent that she was going to need surgery. again. third time.
i was at the underwater treadmill with dorijane when rob got home and found she had been barfing all over the place--the sure indication that something is stuck. so he loaded her up and took her over while i was driving home from the treadmill. we waited by the phone until 10 pm and called the emergency clinic--they had... Tue, 31 Jan 2017 16:47:22 EST wednesday good morning! well--my computer crashed out twice trying to do this--so I am just going to say hi and quit. have a lovely day! Wed, 25 Jan 2017 08:00:02 EST tuesday good morning. yesterday was okay--dorijane's vet appt. went well--she goes to see her chiropractor vet once a month, and she has been doing quite well lately. he was concerned that her weight has slid up--and since we have made the switch off prednisone and back to the nsaids, he wants me to have a blood chem. done on her. all three of them are going friday to their regular vet so i will have it done then. trying to consolidate some of these vet things so i am not constantly driving aroun... Tue, 24 Jan 2017 07:03:55 EST monday good morning. hope everybody had a good weekend. we are unseasonably warm here and took advantage of it by cleaning the henhouses. all the little kids are able to go out into their respective yards, so they all got a good dose of fresh air. the sun shone most of the day and it was beautiful. we went up to michigan antiquing and did a quick pass of the ice sculpture festival--which was having some problems since the temp. was in the low 60's.
yesterday was still warm, but very foggy... Mon, 23 Jan 2017 06:51:01 EST thursday good morning! first of all, if you haven't read karen's (livedaily) blog on perseverance and consistency--i recommend it. karen doesn't blog a lot, but when she does, it's always worth reading.
yesterday was a better day. clay went so much better--working on learning to make galleries and lids (the gallery is the slot a lid fits into) and actually had a good learning session. whew. nothing like a really bad day to make you wonder if you will ever be able to do something again. al... Thu, 19 Jan 2017 05:51:25 EST wednesday good morning! here's hoping today will be a better day. it started off fine--i was busy all day, but around noon when i went down to throw clay it all fell apart. i think that was the worst session ever--i threw about 12 pounds of clay and found new and exciting ways to collapse it, loose the center, shear it right off the wheel, trim it crooked and bend the edges--i ended up with two small containers with lids that as of this morning don't fit properly. the remaining 10 or so pounds of c... Wed, 18 Jan 2017 08:08:25 EST tuesday good morning! yesterday was gloomy, wet and generally UGH. rob had the day off and we did a few putzy chores around the house and went out to lunch. pretty uneventful overall. we are trying to decide if we want to attend beekeeping school for beginners in february, and we had a brief conversation about my latest brainwave--i want to get the barn further cleaned out and reorganized and able to have a source of heat for winter so i can move EVERYTHING out there and have a whole, intact stud... Tue, 17 Jan 2017 09:23:30 EST pics of pots hi all--just thought i would post some pics of my current crop of pots. i have been working on a carving technique that is sort of like inlay but not exactly--i think its a sort of simplified version of it. you coat leather hard clay with several coats of underglaze, which ends up being basically opaque. then you wax over the underglaze and while the clay is still soft you carve back through the wax and underglaze. then you put a second underglaze color over the top and wipe the excess aw... Mon, 16 Jan 2017 14:41:36 EST friday--sore back, more clay good morning! nursing a sore back this morning--fairly certain i overused some muscles on the total gym. i have pain in my lats and upper back--not major, but enough to get my attention. yesterday was a rest day, so rest i did, and today i will do the workout but at a lower intensity. i have thrown pots three days this week, so i think that is bothering it too. plan to throw again today because i have made a breakthrough of sorts over the last couple days and i want to continue committing... Fri, 13 Jan 2017 08:11:26 EST a thunderstorm--in january--REALLY???? good morning! yes there is lightning and thunder outside. in northern indiana. in january.
i guess i'm glad it's not snow--but i like snowstorms in their proper time and thunderstorms in theirs.
yesterday i took dorijane to the treadmill--she has developed a reluctance to walk down her ramp out of the car. i can't lift her without fear of harming her back, so i just have to be patient and coax her with food. i had some lovely (to her) pressure cooked mushy chicken with me. ... Thu, 12 Jan 2017 07:13:20 EST
