CLUMBOY's SparkPeople Blog CLUMBOY's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community monday--total gym recap good morning! thought today i would finally update on the total gym challenge i did and record my experience.
i have seen the challenge on the infomercials and figured out that the exercise routine is on a vimeo clip, so i decided to give it a shot. since i didn't have any kind of written protocol i made up my own. since it is 14 workouts in 19 days, i decided to do three days on and one rest day. made a little sheet to cross off and keep track of the days.
first off--let me tel... Mon, 6 Feb 2017 07:46:04 EST wednesday--regaining sanity??? maybe???? good morning! well last night i think i actually slept for a period of hours without interruption. we are sleeping in the living room and i sacked out on the couch instead of the floor. dorijane and ralphie joined me, rob snuggled into his recliner and shambles settled on her floor mat, with her cone on. about 4:30 i woke up and remembered i had forgotten to cover the pots i had thrown tuesday, so i went to the basement and did that and a little glazing. came back up and popped a pottery... Wed, 1 Feb 2017 07:14:04 EST geez--what day is it? okay--i have drifted away again--last tuesday shambles swallowed a rock--by wednesday afternoon it was apparent that she was going to need surgery. again. third time.
i was at the underwater treadmill with dorijane when rob got home and found she had been barfing all over the place--the sure indication that something is stuck. so he loaded her up and took her over while i was driving home from the treadmill. we waited by the phone until 10 pm and called the emergency clinic--they had... Tue, 31 Jan 2017 16:47:22 EST wednesday good morning! well--my computer crashed out twice trying to do this--so I am just going to say hi and quit. have a lovely day! Wed, 25 Jan 2017 08:00:02 EST tuesday good morning. yesterday was okay--dorijane's vet appt. went well--she goes to see her chiropractor vet once a month, and she has been doing quite well lately. he was concerned that her weight has slid up--and since we have made the switch off prednisone and back to the nsaids, he wants me to have a blood chem. done on her. all three of them are going friday to their regular vet so i will have it done then. trying to consolidate some of these vet things so i am not constantly driving aroun... Tue, 24 Jan 2017 07:03:55 EST monday good morning. hope everybody had a good weekend. we are unseasonably warm here and took advantage of it by cleaning the henhouses. all the little kids are able to go out into their respective yards, so they all got a good dose of fresh air. the sun shone most of the day and it was beautiful. we went up to michigan antiquing and did a quick pass of the ice sculpture festival--which was having some problems since the temp. was in the low 60's.
yesterday was still warm, but very foggy... Mon, 23 Jan 2017 06:51:01 EST thursday good morning! first of all, if you haven't read karen's (livedaily) blog on perseverance and consistency--i recommend it. karen doesn't blog a lot, but when she does, it's always worth reading.
yesterday was a better day. clay went so much better--working on learning to make galleries and lids (the gallery is the slot a lid fits into) and actually had a good learning session. whew. nothing like a really bad day to make you wonder if you will ever be able to do something again. al... Thu, 19 Jan 2017 05:51:25 EST wednesday good morning! here's hoping today will be a better day. it started off fine--i was busy all day, but around noon when i went down to throw clay it all fell apart. i think that was the worst session ever--i threw about 12 pounds of clay and found new and exciting ways to collapse it, loose the center, shear it right off the wheel, trim it crooked and bend the edges--i ended up with two small containers with lids that as of this morning don't fit properly. the remaining 10 or so pounds of c... Wed, 18 Jan 2017 08:08:25 EST tuesday good morning! yesterday was gloomy, wet and generally UGH. rob had the day off and we did a few putzy chores around the house and went out to lunch. pretty uneventful overall. we are trying to decide if we want to attend beekeeping school for beginners in february, and we had a brief conversation about my latest brainwave--i want to get the barn further cleaned out and reorganized and able to have a source of heat for winter so i can move EVERYTHING out there and have a whole, intact stud... Tue, 17 Jan 2017 09:23:30 EST pics of pots hi all--just thought i would post some pics of my current crop of pots. i have been working on a carving technique that is sort of like inlay but not exactly--i think its a sort of simplified version of it. you coat leather hard clay with several coats of underglaze, which ends up being basically opaque. then you wax over the underglaze and while the clay is still soft you carve back through the wax and underglaze. then you put a second underglaze color over the top and wipe the excess aw... Mon, 16 Jan 2017 14:41:36 EST friday--sore back, more clay good morning! nursing a sore back this morning--fairly certain i overused some muscles on the total gym. i have pain in my lats and upper back--not major, but enough to get my attention. yesterday was a rest day, so rest i did, and today i will do the workout but at a lower intensity. i have thrown pots three days this week, so i think that is bothering it too. plan to throw again today because i have made a breakthrough of sorts over the last couple days and i want to continue committing... Fri, 13 Jan 2017 08:11:26 EST a thunderstorm--in january--REALLY???? good morning! yes there is lightning and thunder outside. in northern indiana. in january.
i guess i'm glad it's not snow--but i like snowstorms in their proper time and thunderstorms in theirs.
yesterday i took dorijane to the treadmill--she has developed a reluctance to walk down her ramp out of the car. i can't lift her without fear of harming her back, so i just have to be patient and coax her with food. i had some lovely (to her) pressure cooked mushy chicken with me. ... Thu, 12 Jan 2017 07:13:20 EST tuesday good morning. busy day yesterday--vet for laser appt., grocery store, pottery carving, a little reading. today is a quiet day so will be a pottery throwing day.
have a lovely day! Tue, 10 Jan 2017 08:12:59 EST monday--book recommendation hi everybody. wanted to pass along a book title i am reading now--i actually came across the book on the spark website someplace.
"Why We Overeat and How to Stop" by Elizabeth Babcock.
she is a psychotherapist and explains the brain science behind the behavior of eating. it is a way of looking at things i have never encountered before. currently i have finished the part of the book that explains things and am about to begin reading the part that explains how to correct things th... Mon, 9 Jan 2017 07:35:31 EST friday ruminations good morning. since it's january and time to make decisions about the course 2017 will take, i find myself thinking about different things. do i want to adopt janet's idea and make a list of 17 things for 2017? i was going to go back and look at my 16 list and see how many things i hit--i kind of think i missed more than i hit.
for now--here is what i know:
i want to get back to doing a few races. i haven't been running at all--and i may not run, but just speed walk. i ran up ... Fri, 6 Jan 2017 08:03:10 EST thursday--the new (old) clay hi everyone! posting late today--the morning got away from me. spent a fair amount of time at the kitchen store talking to phyllis. she wants me to throw pottery that has multiple uses--like a bowl that can be a tea bowl, a cereal bowl, and with markings on it so it can be a measuring bowl too. things like that. any ideas?? she is trying to attract millenials to her store and seems to think that is a trend that they like. it makes sense to me--why gunk up your small apt. or dorm room wi... Thu, 5 Jan 2017 15:42:42 EST wednesday--little catchup good morning! thought i would give a little catchup on what's been going on around here--i've been gone so long i'm not sure where to start.
summer was fine--the very end of it was kind of a pain--we had over 10 inches of rain in 24 hours--we had no flooding, which was better than a lot of folks, but the mosquitoes hatched in epic proportions and continued until frost. it literally was like being snowed in but it was august. you could NOT go outside. we finally got some mosquito net ... Wed, 4 Jan 2017 07:39:50 EST quick words good morning! back at it for 2017. currently doing a 19 day challenge on the total gym and liking it a lot. recovering from a gut bug and figuring things out for the new year. hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and look forward to hearing from you and catching up. have a great tuesday! Tue, 3 Jan 2017 07:20:37 EST friday good morning! looking forward to the weekend. need to at least start getting my house cleaned since my little brother will be spending a couple nights here.
yesterday was a good day. got a lot done--almost everything i wanted to accomplish. laundry, longer walk with ralphie, minestrone in the crockpot, ground flour so i can bake bread next week, went to the orchard and got more apples so we can do applesauce this weekend, gassed up the car, vacuumed around my glazing table, and thr... Fri, 7 Oct 2016 08:06:06 EST wednesday good morning! well, opened the kiln late monday--not a disaster, but it overfired. i think the 10 minute hold was too long. a very pretty mug was perfect on one side and blistered badly on the other. and none of the tea bowls i was hoping to take to phyllis at the kitchen store turned out well enough. had some successes--i would rate this load at about 50/50. still a LOT of learning to do. but the pinholes were better, and some other things i tried were good, so i have moved a tiny bit... Wed, 5 Oct 2016 09:28:38 EST monday good morning! rain has stopped here and the week promises to be a nice one. i am taking ralphie to the park today, mosquitoes or no mosquitoes. i am sick of being confined to this house by the weather and the bugs.
saturday we went to goshen and got the paint for diane's house. my brother's paint store kindly donated it to her and she was so pleased and touched. we were going to cover the cost, but ended up not needing to.
and the kids in her class got their pots decorated--her... Mon, 3 Oct 2016 08:42:34 EST friday: hope you can find and read this.

hi there--been occupied the last couple days. got an emergency call from rosie thursday and had to run her and murphy to the vet. then yesterday i took marianne to the oral surgeon for 3 tooth extractions. ouch.
anyway--i am putting a link here to an editorial i came across on my yahoo newsfeed. hope it's okay to post it here--maybe there is a better way to link to it. the author is sarah florence. this was truly powerful for me because it completely resonated with my... Sat, 1 Oct 2016 02:58:16 EST POTTERY TOUR WAS FABULOUS!!!! good morning! well lets see--saturday we went on the pottery tour and was it ever great! will share some pics--i didn't take nearly enough, but you can get an idea. first off we stopped at goshen pottery supply--this looks like its all the young upstarts--lots of tattoos and body piercings. i think 6 vendors--5 men and one lady. the store owner and friend had just unloaded their wood kiln and were frantically trying to torch two pieces loose that had fused to a shelf. they were debating... Mon, 26 Sep 2016 08:26:03 EST friday good morning! well ralphie had a very nice birthday. i got up early and started baking because i wanted to take a birthday cookie box to the vet. made three batches of box cookies but tweaked them all to make them a little fancier. got done about 11 and hopped in the car with ralphie to deliver them. he had his picture taken with his best friend, jade (one of the receptionists) and lots of the staff came out to wish him a happy day. he sat on the bench beside me wearing his ribbon and b... Fri, 23 Sep 2016 07:27:30 EST thursday--ralphie is ONE today! (pic) Thu, 22 Sep 2016 13:34:05 EST wednesday good morning! lets see--dorijane's vet visit was good. her numbers were up a little--not a lot, but the vet said her gut instinct is that the red blood cells are not down because of autoimmune disease--rather it's a function of just her taking the prednisone and having some sort of issue going on--be it allergies or something else. she asked me if i wanted to drop the dose some more, and i said YES, so we took her down by 5 milligrams. recheck in a week. she seems to feel okay, and is ac... Wed, 21 Sep 2016 07:43:24 EST monday--candied jalapenos good morning! nice weekend--we got some stuff done around here and the weather was good. fired the kiln yesterday--haven't unloaded it yet, it was a small load of earthenware and it looks like it got slightly overfired. still learning this kiln--but each time i come to understand something better. i don't feel like i am competent at using it yet, and i have more "everyday" dishes coming out of it, but that's okay. i should develop the habit of using test tiles--but so far haven't done th... Mon, 19 Sep 2016 07:52:58 EST friday late in the day hi all--almost dinnertime here--had kind of a rough day. i didn't sleep last night--maybe three hours. spent most of the morning exhausted and trying to get into motion. by the end of the day i have the house cleaned for the most part--not as well as i planned, but done after a fashion. had a good day yesterday in pottery--tried throwing apple bakers and didn't do too bad for a first attempt. i found another youtube that has a process i like better, so i will try that. these first three... Fri, 16 Sep 2016 18:01:37 EST thursday good morning! well--i actually went for a run finally this morning! left ralphie at home and he was terribly upset--didn't want to go into his little crate--kept trying to take me to the hook where the leashes hang. but it has been a good 3 weeks since i last ran, i was breaking in new shoes and didn't know how bad the mosquitoes would be. decided that was enough variables for one run. i didn't pick up my 8K interval, rather i uploaded a bass 10 interval run. you run 10 and walk one--a ... Thu, 15 Sep 2016 10:40:40 EST wednesday good morning! think we are supposed to get rain today.
got a call from the vet in the early evening--she is concerned because while the platelets are up, another value is dropping. for now we are leaving her drugs the same and will recheck in a week, but i am worried about my girl. i lost a dog to immune mediated anemia many years ago, and whatever is going on with her, we don't have a handle on yet. i did find out that the specialty clinic near indianapolis has several internal me... Wed, 14 Sep 2016 07:21:57 EST tuesday pm good afternoon. running late today. had to catch up on my sleep this morning and didn't get moving until about 8. did treadmill--don't want to chance running at the park while the skeeters are still SO BAD. i took ralphie and shambles yesterday, and it was bearable as long as we stayed on the road and out in the sun. but there are more shaded than sunny places to run, and standing water everywhere. so this morning i hit the treadmill, made a batch of brown rice, worked on a bowl i am gl... Tue, 13 Sep 2016 16:48:59 EST well--where did summer go? hi all--back on line again. summer is over, the kids are boarding the bus next door, the mornings are cooler and fall is in the air sometimes now.
hope everyone had a good summer. i have missed everybody and will work on re-establishing my communication lines again.
the daylily season was quite less than stellar. sales were very flat. i think people are just used to me being here and very few stop anymore out of curiosity. the bloom was subdued too--we had a very heavy bloom ... Mon, 12 Sep 2016 07:27:30 EST friday hi! dropped shambles off to the groomer this morning--starting housework. finished the "quick" workout on the total gym dvd. I must say I like this gadget a lot.
went to patricks this week for his birthday and our annual piece of the deadliest chocolate cake on the planet. enjoyed it immensely and called it dinner.
hot as blazes today. have a great weekend! Fri, 22 Jul 2016 10:28:57 EST come for a virtual visit! (with chook pics) hi! thought you might enjoy seeing our place--I wanted to document a couple things for myself, and thought I would share with you.
first up--here is a shot of our new garden idea. we are gardening in stock tanks. so far it's working beautifully. easy to plant, weed, water and maintain. on this side of the garage are tomatoes and cukes. in the next pic are peppers, jalapenos and green beans. the peppers in particular like this idea, as you can see, but everything is doing well. <... Tue, 19 Jul 2016 13:50:19 EST monday--back again good morning! summer is such a hit and miss spark time for me. been so busy getting ready for my event that happened Saturday--I was part of a new event called the "eat local road trip". there were six stops on it and I was stop #1. mary was here with a flower tasting table and we had two talks--a master gardener talked about edible plants and a beekeeper and his grandson talked about bees. the day was very successful--lots of people out and about making the rounds. I think the most vis... Mon, 18 Jul 2016 07:54:37 EST kiln's unloaded! good morning! well, after a restless night waking up and wondering if I should go check the kiln temp to see if I can unload it yet, I got up about 5 and went down. the temp was down to just about 200 degrees--safe to open. slowly pulled the top up, prepared for disaster and was greeted with---pretty, shiny things! they are still pinging as they sit here on the desk. overall I am really pleased with this first attempt. not perfect by a long stretch, but nice enough to be encouraging, an... Fri, 1 Jul 2016 08:04:24 EST thursday--red letter day good morning! okay--after 3 bisque firings I am loading the kiln this morning for my first ever glaze firing. not a big load, and its a low fire clay. but I think it's time got take the plunge, so I am trying to go with an easy project first--we'll see how it all turns out.
tea tray is completely done--I changed the edge color--the contrast was too strong--it made me see the edge and not the interior more strongly. so I had some very pale blue/aqua chalk paint and tried that. it's s... Thu, 30 Jun 2016 07:15:11 EST tuesday--tea tray! good morning! here is the tea tray--I nearly killed myself yesterday working--starting at 6:30 am when I got up and dug a landscapers order of 15 plants. then a sweet lady who has been waiting to buy some Siberian iris came out and I had to dig a mammoth--3 foot across crown for her and divide into forths. I sat down to eat leftover cold pizza at some point in time for lunch, sat down at dinner, but basically I didn't stop moving until about 8:30 last night. my reward for all that hard wo... Tue, 28 Jun 2016 07:34:38 EST birdhouses done--update photo just a quick photo--the grout makes a lot of difference. on to my big tea tray---I am feeling in the mood to tackle it, finally!
Sun, 26 Jun 2016 17:10:39 EST friday--birdhouses on parade good morning! hope everybody had a good Thursday. it started out really humid here--took ralphie for a walk rather than a run. came home to see a really nice daylily seedling blooming--of course its right in the section of row where there are NO LABELS--so I don't know what the cross was. ugh. chuck arrived while I was down there hunting so we chatted for awhile. he is still hauling wood from the mammoth tree that fell.
did a few other odds and ends and came in to see a message f... Fri, 24 Jun 2016 07:29:06 EST thursday good morning! well after much fanfare we had rain last night. we didn't get a lot--probably the lowest amount in the county--but enough for a nice soak and I won't have to haul sprinklers today. the light show was spectacular--the sky to the north constantly flickered with the over 8000 lightning strikes that happened in a period of about 2.5 hours. we didn't loose power or have high winds. we were ready--I had filled the bathtub with water, run the dishwasher and did all the laundry in c... Thu, 23 Jun 2016 07:51:44 EST wednesday good morning! supposed to get rain and storms here today. I hope we get rain at least. judging by the radar this morning, its a good possibility.
ran yesterday morning--finished 2nd rotation on week 6 of the 8K interval program. one more to go then on to week 7. not my best run ever--what I thought was allergies seems to be a summer cold, so I am dragging a little. not too bad though.
had a meeting for the cemetery walk yesterday, I read my script and practiced with the mic... Wed, 22 Jun 2016 07:12:04 EST lets see-----tuesday??? yes--its Tuesday. got a little rain last night. not enough to do much good, but this morning is quite cool with a very heavy dew on everything. so the plants are getting some moisture.
pottery on the upswing--I am sticking with it and making some good strides. it's all about the body English. I lowered my stool one click and I think that was an improvement. made some more bottles--using stoneware this time because it's more stable and doesn't overhydrate as easily. getting some go... Tue, 21 Jun 2016 07:52:59 EST thursday--bad day in potteryland good morning. actually yesterday was a pretty good day overall--I worked outside for 2 hr. in the morning after taking ralphie to the park. it was miserably hot and humid, but I got a good amount of work done. by the time I came in I knew it was time for my body to stop.
started on mosaic project--3 little birdhouses. got the perches and half the roofs done. then I was determined I was going to wedge 6 pieces of red earthenware and work on bottles. it's been awhile since I did bo... Thu, 16 Jun 2016 07:25:27 EST wednesday good morning! woke this morning to a wet world--YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I heard thunder and hard rain through the night and was pleased to see this morning that I wasn't dreaming. possible rain later today too--and we need it! and a day where I don't have to haul sprinklers somewhere is always a good one.
yesterday was kind of disappointing--I was so tired--hadn't slept well. took a quick nap in the morning after rob left for work, and then did leslie for an hour. my intent was to throw ... Wed, 15 Jun 2016 07:48:35 EST tuesday good morning! yesterday was a good one--started off in a bad mood, but it lifted over the course of the day. after blogging I got ralphie into his little harness (a feat in and of itself). I lay it on the floor and say "step in" which apparently means "get all excited and run around the room barking and whining, with your feet nowhere NEAR your harness". eventually his little orbit brings him close enough that I can catch him and guide his feet into the harness. at that point he knows to... Tue, 14 Jun 2016 07:54:28 EST monday--catching up sort of good morning! hope everyone is well and had a good weekend. judging by the blogs, many of us are kind of in a momentary funk. but a huge thank you to andrea (adakara) for her blog. you never know when or where your words will reach out and hit their mark. I needed to read yours this morning--and dawnsuccess too. both of you really helped me this morning.
lets see--work continues apace around here--I spent Friday cleaning my house--didn't go run because I wasn't sure if I would hav... Mon, 13 Jun 2016 08:02:03 EST wednesday good morning! quick update before I load ralphie up for a run. this will be the final rotation in the 5th week interval of our 8K work. 5 more weeks to go. the kiln is running this morning--I started a slow bisque fire yesterday about 5:30--the cycle takes 24 hours and then the kiln can cool through the night and be unloaded hopefully Thursday morning. I want to get enough glazed so I can do my first glaze firing.
first official day open today--cleaned the little house yesterday-... Wed, 8 Jun 2016 07:33:21 EST what day is it, anyway??? good morning--well it appears to be Tuesday. rob was on vacation last week--and he took the Thursday before that off so we could go to the English toy spaniel national specialty show in Michigan, which was a blast. all those little ralphies in various colors and sizes. I saw a ruby puppy (solid red) that made me wish for another puppy like mad! ralphie was really good for his first show.
last week was a solid work week. we got all the ponds running, rob rewired a bunch of stuff, got... Tue, 7 Jun 2016 07:57:15 EST wednesday--a VERY busy tuesday good afternoon. I am posting this before I head out to take dorijane to the underwater treadmill--the only place I had to go today. I did take ralphie running at the park--finished the 4th week of my 8K rotation. things are going well on that score--not running fast by a long shot, but getting a nice run in and pushing ralphie the last half in the stroller adds a nice intensity to the last part. I ordered a cooling mat for him today--today was really quite warm so I stayed on the bike tra... Wed, 25 May 2016 15:30:08 EST
