CLUMBOY's SparkPeople Blog CLUMBOY's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community tuesday--carved pots good morning! hallelujah! it's actually sort of warm here! the snow is melting and will continue to do so for a few days. the cold will return, but this is a blessed break from it all. after I do total gym this morning I hope to take ralphie to the park--he has major cabin fever. but with his little feet and the sub-zero cold, walks outdoors were out of the question for awhile.
dorijane is in the crate--she seems to have hurt something--I can't really even tell what. 5 days on a... Tue, 9 Jan 2018 08:37:56 EST thursday in the frozen north good morning! the temps have moderated a little--it's pretty much bearable to go outside. rob is working from home today and tomorrow--right now he's out shoveling since we are in the midst of another lake effect event. I think we got about 4 inches overnight and it's still snowing.
didn't do much yesterday except take dorijane to the vet for a blood draw and stop at the feed store for chicken food on the way home. wasn't feeling quite 100 percent so I just took it easy. planning to... Thu, 4 Jan 2018 08:24:38 EST tuesday--2018 is upon us and it's minus 16 degrees outside! good morning! as you can see by my header--its freaking cold around here. no trips to the park for ralphie. I venture out to feed and water the chickens and fill the bird feeder and that's about it. the barn with all it's insulation was still about 26 degrees above zero this morning--which is actually pretty good. I have my paint ready, but don't want to work out there until it's a little warmer. we brought the paint up to the house since it's latex--don't want 200 dollars worth of pai... Tue, 2 Jan 2018 11:11:19 EST low carb Christmas hi everybody--hope you all had a wonderful holiday. I was really occupied right beforehand getting a lot of new pottery done--Phyllis had a little event for me in the kitchen store on the Saturday before the holiday, and I was glazing and running my kiln like a crazy person all week. the event was very nice--sold 10 pieces in 2 hours--mostly to my friends. but it was great to see everyone, and for the most part my hard work paid off. at the end of the event, Phyllis bought everything I br... Wed, 27 Dec 2017 07:48:38 EST thursday--sleepless in walkerton hi all--hope everybody is well. we are having some sleepless nights around here. dorijane started on thyroid medication, and it can have some profound effects. her main one has been that she awakens about midnight-2 am and is AWAKE. wants her breakfast. paces, whines and barks. poor rob has to get some sleep so he can get to work, so I have been taking her in the living room and keeping her with me until she conks out again (usually about 4 and then it's time to get up around 5. I talk... Thu, 14 Dec 2017 07:43:23 EST thursday--firing the kiln etc hi all! finally sitting down to blog. my cold is much better--still some residual gunk but I am being diligent about keeping it moving so it's getting better each day. today was just a big frustration in the morning, but it all calmed down later. ran to nancy's to take her paycheck to her for working the open house. had a nice visit. nancy is a very skilled seamstress and well versed in all the needle arts. she showed me some antique quilt tops she wants to assemble and hand quilt and ... Thu, 7 Dec 2017 20:18:26 EST monday hi all--it's Monday afternoon and rob and I have been working in the barn. got the floor trim down. the wainscot trim is painted and ready to go up, but I need to get paint for the walls first. I have figured out where my heated clay storage closet will be, and we got some drywall patches put up where we installed the windows. one more wall needs some drywall. it's getting closer to completion and looking better all the time. it will always be a rough space, but it can be clean and neat... Mon, 4 Dec 2017 16:09:30 EST friday--open house recuperation! good morning! well the kitchen store open house is done--happened last Saturday. as always it was a huge undertaking and a great success for Phyllis, despite the chaos that reigned in the food tent. the customers didn't see it--and I spent the entire day madly racing around putting out fires, and so did a couple other people. had a long talk with Phyllis yesterday and she understands that what I was trying to do is NOT a job for one person. she has already talked to sherri about helping ... Fri, 1 Dec 2017 11:20:37 EST tuesday good morning. was thinking for awhile it was Monday--this time of year rob has a lot of time off and so my "day clock" gets more messed up than usual.
barn work continues--the insulation along the ceiling line is done, and we have just 2 more panels to complete the ceiling. it would only be one but somehow one got cut to the wrong width. we tried to mount it and then piece a fix but it's not right. we had just enough of the insulation board to cut a piece to replace it. I am painting... Tue, 21 Nov 2017 08:02:43 EST thursday--going dark good morning! well--as I planned yesterday I "went dark" on the kitchen store open house. I didn't work on it or talk to Phyllis at all. I actually spent more time throwing clay than I ever have. not a great success overall, but I finished the day better than I started. went down about 10:30 and threw a nice bottle. then a bottle with a couple issues, but still okay. then 4 bottles in succession that failed. by this time it was after 1 pm so I came up and ate lunch. I was determined ... Thu, 16 Nov 2017 08:25:56 EST wednesday--dorijane update and other stuff good morning! dorijane had her monthly visit with the chiro vet. she has been tolerating her new diet and the thyroid medicine well. in fact--as would be expected, the thyroid med. has made her a little more alert and energized, which is nice to see. it's kind of sad though--her spirit is still so willing and full of life and movement, but her body just can't keep up anymore. but she moves around quite well and can still do her walks at the park and loves to go--so for her age I am happy... Wed, 15 Nov 2017 08:11:36 EST saturday--the self confidence roller coaster good morning! well the barn roof is as done as it's going to be for this year. Wednesday I got up there and put sealer on the front side--at the end of that I was pretty much "done" crawling around, fighting the tree branches and trying not to slip. so rob got on the ladder and did the back side--with the extension pole he got almost to the peak. he doesn't like actually going onto the roof so he stays on the ladder. despite the chilly temps--when he checked it the next day it had formed... Sat, 11 Nov 2017 06:55:44 EST tuesday--sweeping the roof hi! hope everyone is having a good day. yes--I did say sweeping the roof. last night when rob got home I went up on the barn roof with a broom. our barn is under a very very old Norway spruce, and there was a deep layer of needles on one section. that part does not leak, so we had planned to just leave it. but when I went up there to sweep so I could patch the last leak, the depth of the layer concerned me--so we swept the whole thing. I only hope this doesn't reveal more leaks that w... Tue, 7 Nov 2017 07:17:18 EST monday--catching up hi! haven't blogged in a few days. let's see--all three brie bakers are done and I have switched back to cylindrical forms now--throwing bottles. I was very pleased I was able to look at a couple pictures and throw forms that were a pretty close match to what I saw. I like bottles. bottles and pitchers I think are my favorite forms.
dorijane had an odd event that happened one day--may have been some really mild seizures caused by a medicine. she is fine, but I had a big panic att... Mon, 6 Nov 2017 06:37:46 EST tuesday good morning. for some reason I was thinking it was Wednesday. probably because rob usually works from home on Tuesdays, but he went in today. said he will work from here on Friday.
got the last brie baker trimmed and handled--tried an experiment that didn't work--but I think I can make it work if I just plan better when I start. the lid of the baker is basically a bowl, and I like the idea of it being a functional bowl as well as a lid. this can't happen when you put a handle on ... Tue, 31 Oct 2017 08:06:37 EST monday brie bakers etc. good morning! hope everyone had a good weekend. we got a little bit done on the barn--cleaned all the stuff out of the rafters and temporarily relocated it . now we are ready to do the ceiling--which will be a bit of a slog--working overhead in a large space. the space is coming together and I am getting excited about moving into it. quite a lot left to do, but I can see how it's going to come together now. we are going to build a large closet in one corner that is insulated separately.... Mon, 30 Oct 2017 07:41:01 EST friday--tv shoot good morning! yesterday I participated in a film shoot for a tv commercial. first time ever for that. Phyllis emailed me in the morning to ask if I could come be a "shopper" in the store. it was all kind of last minute--the production company contacted her because they were coming to the area to film for another local business, and offered to film for her too at a reduced rate since they were in the area anyway. there were about 6 of us in the store, pretending to shop--she also had me f... Fri, 27 Oct 2017 07:47:36 EST wednesday good morning! rob worked from home yesterday so the computer was occupied all day. he is working from home one day a week--usually Tuesdays. I think he wants to transition to two days at some point. I really like it when he works from home--the whole day has a much more relaxed feel. I sleep in a little, make breakfast a little later, and I have the time to make something that may take a little longer. we have lunch together too. and since he usually starts working between 5 and 6 am (... Wed, 25 Oct 2017 07:30:55 EST monday--rob enters Onederland. as for me--not so much good morning! Friday at his weigh in, rob was below 200--he was so happy and I am very happy for him. this means he has lost about 40 pounds since early july.
this morning I got on the scale and the very slight weight loss I had registered for last month was gone. so I have some things to think about.
first off--we ate out yesterday--something we almost never do anymore. and at a place that is kind of notorious. I tried to be very careful, and make what were the best menu cho... Mon, 23 Oct 2017 07:50:56 EST thursday--car gets an upgrade hi! just thought I would post these two pictures of the car we DIDN'T trade for the Subaru. our initial thought was to trade our Toyota sienna since it's the older car--but it's much easier for the clumbers to get in and out of, so we kept it and traded the prius. then we decided to upgrade the van and make it a little nicer for driving. we removed the center seats years ago, and made a sort of "floor" out of the extruded foam sheet insulation to cover up the brackets where the seats fit-... Thu, 19 Oct 2017 08:07:31 EST wednesday--vet visits and roof painting good morning. two vet visits yesterday--dorijane for her monthly chiro tuneup, and a quick trip for ralphie to get his kennel cough vaccine. it's so nice--they are given orally now--no more sloshing them down their nostrils. with his short face--that was really uncomfortable for him.
started painting the barn roof--we are using this aluminum based paint. stirring it was a total adventure. I used the heavy duty corded drill and a mixing paddle. needless to say, with my weak hands th... Wed, 18 Oct 2017 09:13:30 EST sunday--killing time hi everybody. sitting here in the morning killing time. rob is on the phone with work. second time this weekend. yesterday the mess got fixed fairly early in the morning. we spent most of the day working in the barn and got almost all of the back wall insulated. the job was complicated by the fact that on that wall my dad had shoved a bunch of old pink insulation in at ground level, which had become a habitat for mice and was a damp, stinky mess. so we donned our masks and pulled it ou... Sun, 15 Oct 2017 08:54:02 EST friday--chicken tragedy good morning. we lost a chicken yesterday. a hawk made it past my fish line barrier (hawks have extremely keen eyesight and they see the fishline and won't fly into it) and got one of the bielefelder hens. so last night when rob got home we stretched shade cloth over the whole enclosure. the hawk could still fly into it, but the result would be not a good one for it. hopefully this will fix the problem once and for all. we will have to revisit this and brace it better before it snows, b... Fri, 13 Oct 2017 08:16:26 EST thursday good morning. this morning I am TIRED. yesterday too--I have not been sleeping well the last few days and i'm feeling it. probably need to take Benadryl for a couple nights to help. did a second glaze firing--kiln should be ready to open in a couple hours. first firing went fairly well--had two pieces I am REALLY happy with.
I would say these are the best finished things to come out of my ki... Thu, 12 Oct 2017 08:22:27 EST internet recipes--AGGGGHHHH!!!! okay--so I have to rant here because I can't leave feedback on the recipe site. atkins has a website with a lot of recipes. found one for granola and decided we would try it tomorrow, so I made it tonight. coconut oil, peanut butter, nuts and unsweetened coconut--lots of nice ingredients. stand over a hot stove stirring constantly for 10 min. bake ate 350 for (according to the recipe) 20 minutes. it seemed like an awful long time to me, but I set the timer and got distracted. at about m... Mon, 9 Oct 2017 20:52:06 EST monday--new air fryer etc. good morning! hope everyone had a good weekend. we had a weekend that deviated from our normal routine. didn't work in the barn at all--although sunday evening we called menards to lock in the price for the 20 sheets of 2 inch thick insulation board--it was on sale and we ended up saving about 130 dollars over the regular price on it. I am going to paint the sheets with a combination of ceiling flat and drywall mud to help it stick, and then we are going to screw it to the cross members t... Mon, 9 Oct 2017 08:21:32 EST friday--APPLESAUCE my parents used to tell us we were "full of applesauce" when we acted silly or naughty. yesterday I was just full of applesauce regardless. I had bought a big bag (about 22 pounds) of northern spy apples. this was a bad year for apples here, according to the orchardist. a late frost decimated their early harvest (including my beloved Zestars--which are what I prefer to use) and punched big holes in their late crop too--no (NONE--WAHHHHHH) jonagolds, no wolf river, no winesap. northern sp... Fri, 6 Oct 2017 08:19:30 EST wednesday good morning! didn't post yesterday because rob was working from home and had the puter tied up all day. we got a storage shed in a box from Costco and it was delivered yesterday--I like to have him home when truck freight shipments come in. as it was the driver was very nice and helped him unload the boxes (technically they only have to get it on to the lift gate and down to the ground). later we went out and used the tractor to muscle the boxes up on a pallet and cover them. chances ar... Wed, 4 Oct 2017 07:14:36 EST the new car hi all--well--our lovely new car is home. the dealership experience was somewhat excruciating--took FOUR. HOURS. a large part of that time was spent listening to phone muzak of the pink panther while we waited for someone to answer and give the dealer the payoff for our prius. this is the first time we have ever traded a car that we still owed money on, so maybe this is normal. and the dealer did a Carfax on the prius and found a recall we had not acted upon (rob and recalls is a whole 'n... Sun, 1 Oct 2017 05:09:39 EST friday--new car day! good morning! today is the day we pick up the new car. we have spent the last few days cleaning up the prius for trade in. it's in actually very nice shape except that rob left the hatch up one time and backed out of the garage, which ripped off the non functional plastic spoiler on the hatch. a 400 dollar part that serves no actual function at all. he has been trying madly to find a used one that we could replace it with (the mounting pins all tore off) and apparently we own the only pr... Fri, 29 Sep 2017 07:58:59 EST thursday good morning. spent yesterday glazing--got a couple sets in progress and a new set of bisque ready to go. I should be able to finish the two sets i'm working on and get started on the new set. planning to throw tomorrow--I need to make some apple bakers.
last night we began cleaning the prius to take to trade in. more left to do, but the process is started. rob is taking Friday afternoon off and we may go to pick the car up then. that would be nicer because then we would have all... Thu, 28 Sep 2017 07:02:24 EST wednesday--fun with GFs and stuff good morning! well yesterday I had a very nice day out with my dear friends. we went to rural king of all places. if you have never been to one, rural king is a huge "country" store. they usually go into old k-mart buildings and do little or no renovation. most of them allow dogs in the store--but the one we went to didn't. apparently Michigan law forbids it. I swear they carry at least one of every type of merchandise you would go to the store for--all with a rural tone to it. clothe... Wed, 27 Sep 2017 08:28:38 EST tuesday good morning. not sure what i'm doing that is causing the double posts. oh well--must have hit the enter key twice or something.
day out with dearest friends today. not sure where we are going, but I know we are on the hunt for a weeping spruce. looking forward to catching up with these special gals.
car pickup is set for Saturday. rob is very excited about it. I hope it all comes off without a hitch.
did some more glazing yesterday--I had a group of pots that I needed ... Tue, 26 Sep 2017 07:26:34 EST monday--new car maybe? barn reno continues good morning! hope everyone had a great weekend. it was hot and miserable here--I think it is going to be hot here until next weekend. managed to get our sunday dog walk in during the early morning so the pooches were happy.
spent our time over the weekend working in the barn (hot and sweaty work). we are in the process of insulating the walls right now. my dad put drywall up in there years ago--so three of the walls and part of the forth had drywall on them. when we tore half the... Mon, 25 Sep 2017 07:36:47 EST monday--new car maybe? barn reno continues good morning! hope everyone had a great weekend. it was hot and miserable here--I think it is going to be hot here until next weekend. managed to get our sunday dog walk in during the early morning so the pooches were happy.
spent our time over the weekend working in the barn (hot and sweaty work). we are in the process of insulating the walls right now. my dad put drywall up in there years ago--so three of the walls and part of the forth had drywall on them. when we tore half the... Mon, 25 Sep 2017 07:36:45 EST friday--ipod struggle continues good morning! well rob tackled the ipod last night, still to no avail. he has determined that our computer is not seeing it properly as a device--and is treating it like it's a zip drive. we can't get it to sync up when we add new music. we tried making a whole new file--didn't work. he spent quite awhile trying to find a solution on line, but so far came up empty. oh well--I have music on it that I can listen to, but i'm getting kind of tired of the same mixes all the time.
and he... Fri, 22 Sep 2017 07:44:46 EST thursday--a bittersweet day good morning! yesterday I spent some time with my friend, Kathy, and made a new friend in the form of Kathy's friend, Darlene. Darlene is not a potter, but she spent many years working with clay as a production former and decorator of slab pieces that were made into refrig. magnets sold through a drugstore chain in California. she also learned china painting and painted and sold decorated porcelain slips. earlier this year she GAVE me 500 pounds of boxed clay that I can reclaim, and yeste... Thu, 21 Sep 2017 07:45:15 EST tuesday shambles turns 10! birthday pic good morning! yesterday was dorijane's monthly chiro visit. she has been a little sore of late, but the dr. didn't find anything unusual. so he adjusted her back and gave her an adequan shot (her monthly dose) and set 12 acupuncture needles. she acts like she feels better today. the weather broke last night and we had thunderstorms, so I am guessing that helped her too.
decided I am spending this entire week working on glazing. I have GOT to get a routine down for this--I am reason... Tue, 19 Sep 2017 07:36:23 EST monday good morning! hope everyone had a good weekend. time to get dressed and take ralphie to the park. have a great Monday!
and yes--rob lost another two pounds this week! added legumes this week--fingers crossed that I can tolerate them. Mon, 18 Sep 2017 08:08:30 EST monday good morning! hope everyone had a good weekend. time to get dressed and take ralphie to the park. have a great Monday!
and yes--rob lost another two pounds this week! added legumes this week--fingers crossed that I can tolerate them. Mon, 18 Sep 2017 08:08:29 EST friday good morning! got my pitchers handled and a tea bowl carved with little turtles. here are some pics of my last few days work. first are some little bottles I did while working on learning to "belly out". I still haven't mastered this very rounded shape, but these are better. at least they stayed together and didn't collapse.

next are mugs, and mugs and pitchers. I tried one of each for... Fri, 15 Sep 2017 08:00:20 EST thursday hi-posting later than normal--I had a 7 am dentist appt. which means I have to get up at 5-ish and leave the house at 6. which then means that I wake up at TWO and keep checking the clock until 5 (I hate alarm clocks). anyway--all was well even though I had to drive the hour it takes to get there through really dense fog. I know the way very well, but managed to almost miss 2 different turns because I couldn't see them coming!
mr. Wilson the rooster is better--I had a little hen who I... Thu, 14 Sep 2017 11:50:56 EST tuesday good morning! waiting for a delivery truck to arrive--have no idea of when it's supposed to get here. and this morning I went to let the chickens out and mr. Wilson, my big rooster is wheezing away. never had this happen before. so I caught him and put him by himself in the small henhouse. going to give him some vitamin water and hope whatever it is isn't catching. I called rob to see if he could stop someplace on his lunch and get some antibiotics. I have never had any kind of respira... Tue, 12 Sep 2017 10:29:32 EST monday--vacation is over good morning! rob went back to work yesterday, he had a nice vacation--we took a little time off and hit the artisan fair in st. joe Michigan, shopped for cars and went to noa noa one night for dinner. the rest of the time we worked on two things--building another work surface for the office--he is planning to work from home more, which is great. I love it when he works from home--the day is so much more relaxed and so is he. I rearranged some stuff, moved the elliptical trainer into my ... Mon, 11 Sep 2017 07:47:45 EST friday hi! quick entry--we worked all day yesterday and the third window is UP!!!! rob did a wonderful job on it. today we cut and replace the metal panels all around it.
have a lovely Friday! Fri, 8 Sep 2017 06:50:49 EST wednesday--back on the scale good morning! rob is on vacation this week, so i'm not checking in every day. Saturday we took ralphie and went to St. Joe Michigan. they had their artisan fair going on--so we milled around in the crowd. unlike the art festival which has become too snooty--the artisan fair welcomes dogs (it's the same site--a bluff overlooking silver beach and lake Michigan) and ralphie saw lots of doggies--one even (a Chihuahua) was smaller than he was! all the dogs are well behaved and everybody acted ... Wed, 6 Sep 2017 09:15:00 EST monday hope everyone is having a fine labor day holiday! Mon, 4 Sep 2017 15:03:38 EST friday good morning--well on his weigh in, rob was down another two pounds! very pleased for him. I am still not using the scale, but the mirror is telling me I am getting smaller, and my clothes are confirming it. interestingly, I have reached a place that I have encountered many times before--a strange anxiety that I am not loosing but gaining weight. its a weird phenomenon, in the past it has actually brought on panic episodes. for some reason my mind becomes convinced that my weight loss ha... Fri, 1 Sep 2017 07:54:31 EST thursday good morning! yesterday was a pretty good day--the weather was lovely and I actually did a little work on the weeds. since I have decided that I am not selling daylilies anymore, I have neglected that area and it's very weedy. I am going to relocate all my plants into borders, so there really isn't any reason to weed the rows now--so I have just let the majority of it go--and it looks pretty wild out there. but I did some tidying and it's a bit less crazy now.
got handles on my platt... Thu, 31 Aug 2017 07:59:02 EST wednesday good morning. well--pottery was on my agenda yesterday, but it didn't happen. cindy had some free time and came by for a visit. it's been ages since I have seen her, and it was wonderful to catch up. she was very ill with pneumonia over the winter and I was really worried about her. but she's all well now, and back into her very busy schedule with Dwayne. they finished all the construction at the big vet clinic and are now working at home to get a couple barns repaired and battened down...
