CLUMBOY's SparkPeople Blog CLUMBOY's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community tuesday--gonna be a HOT day! good morning everybody! today the temp is supposed to get up to around 90--planning to grout my birdhouses today, and work on my daylilies a little. its kettlebells day, so my workout is indoor. got my 3 miles done yesterday, and wed. its supposed to be cooler. trying to decide whether I want to do 3 or 4 miles tomorrow. my goal is to do 2 on sunday--then 2-3 mile days and a 4 mile day each week. I usually do the two 3 mile days on mon. and wed. but since wed. seems to be my best runnin... Tue, 22 Jul 2014 07:06:06 EST monday--great visit from a friend good morning everyone! the weekend was a full and busy one. Saturday a very dear friend I haven't seen in awhile stopped by for a visit. hayden is young--I think he just recently turned 20--and about a year ago he left this area to take a floral design job in Chicago. he basically closed his eyes and stepped off into the unknown all by himself since he doesn't have a very good support net in his family.
seeing him Saturday made my heart so glad--he is so confident and happy--loves ... Mon, 21 Jul 2014 06:56:02 EST friday--whew! good morning--didn't realize I haven't blogged since Tuesday. not even sure what happened to Wednesday. hopefully I logged my running miles--will have to check. did my fastest mile ever on wed. 10:38!!!! today the plan is to do 4 miles--but I am so bone tired we'll have to see. think I will shoot for3 and see where I go from there.
yesterday I had the first of two garden groups here--it was a small group (6 people) from a nearby retirement place. what a lovely group they were! ... Fri, 18 Jul 2014 07:25:18 EST tuesday good morning everybody! its a beautiful cool morning here--we missed the rain yesterday so I will have to water today. rob came home and mowed--so the garden is tidied up for the garden tour Thursday. its a group from a retirement home coming out to see the flowers. thinking I may call Patrick to see if he wants to come help with serving and hosting. if he can't rosie might be willing.
had to buy some sugar free cookies--since I don't have any sugar substitute and I wouldn't be sure... Tue, 15 Jul 2014 06:52:00 EST monday good morning everyone. got my running clothes on--going to (hopefully) run mon, tues and wed to get caught up for this week. 2 miles today then 3 and 3. 4 on Friday.
had some old customers stop by that I didn't see last year. a mom and her two boys--probably 10 and 6. the oldest is very interested in plants and flowers--he and I walk around and talk daylilies while little brother teddy talked to rob as he worked on the train. teddy is a train aficionado--had a nice layout of his o... Mon, 14 Jul 2014 06:59:32 EST cutest puppy EVER hi everyone--yesterday was a long and very fun day. the drive to springfield and back took about 10 hours total. we spent another couple hours at the breeder's house too.
very glad we took the route a friend of sherri's recommended--it was a very easy drive except for the very VERY heavy rain we were in for about 45 minutes. slowed down to about 45 and drove with emergency flashers on for most of that time.
and we got lost a couple times, and had a puppy poo event in the car, ... Sun, 13 Jul 2014 20:10:09 EST friday good morning everybody! today is going to be cool and lovely. going to run my 3 miles and then its home for weeding, watering etc. I have a whole slew of rubeckia "cherry brandy" and "chim chiminee" that have been patiently waiting in the cold frame to be planted--hopefylly I can make some headway on that front.
yesterday my work plans got somewhat derailed--there are days when everybody in the world decides to stop by for a visit, and yesterday was one of those days. I did have on... Fri, 11 Jul 2014 06:57:33 EST thursday good morning--hope everyone is having a great day. gardening on the agenda for today--got more weeding done, and even a little hybridizing.
gearing up for the big road trip--Saturday I am going with my friend, sherri, to pick up her new puppy in Illinois. we will be gone all day. rob is going to have to mind the store, but I think its going to be rainy, so he shouldn't be too busy.
hope its a wonderful Thursday! Thu, 10 Jul 2014 06:40:02 EST THE CAT CAME BACK hi everyone--well--I am relieved to say the cat came back! late this morning I was out looking over my flowers and there under a clump of daylilies was blabby--fine and fit. she came out and rubbed on my legs and I picked her up and gave her a good cuddle. then we went off to find little so they could say hi to each other.
here is the best version of the old song if you want a giggle:

z4
rained yesterday off and on all day. its ... Wed, 9 Jul 2014 07:08:57 EST whew--what a week! finally catching up hi everybody! sorry I didn't respond to anyone last week--I couldn't. rob was on vacation and looking forward to having some down time to relax and he was planning to start working on our greenhouse. mother nature had other ideas. Monday night a series of storms blew through and what appears to have been 11 tornadoes were a part of it. I am pretty sure one of them skated over us--we woke Tuesday morning to no power, 2 big branches down on the garden train, and the huge poplar tree down o... Tue, 8 Jul 2014 07:00:14 EST friday good morning--well the Japanese place was okay--it was nice to see Carl (rob's co worker whose birthday it was) and meet his girlfriend. a few others showed up, so we were 7 at the grill-side. this was a soho grill--its definitely part of a chain--looks like kind of the applebees version of Japanese food. our chef was kind of bored by the whole affair--he did a competent job but it was clear he would have rather been someplace else. what made it much more fun was watching the two large pa... Fri, 27 Jun 2014 07:09:16 EST thursday good morning--well its not raining--kind of misty and foggy but its supposed to break in awhile and be sunny the rest of the day. tonight we are going to some Japanese restaurant for rob's co-workers birthday. never had Japanese food before that I am aware of. should be interesting.
ran 4 miles yesterday--the humidity made it really tough going. going to do a shorter run today--I can't run on Friday--so today is the day. our next 5K race is on sunday--so that will give me two days ... Thu, 26 Jun 2014 06:59:12 EST poison ivy! hi! well its time for my somewhat biennial reunion with poison ivy, so i thought that while i am itching i would pass along what i have learned over the years about this very effective and terribly annoying plant. the botanic name poison ivy carries is a highly descriptive one--Toxicodendron radicans. it is a member of the mango family, and the cashew family, and some people can also have a reaction to these two items, since they both also have a version of the toxic oil--urushiol.
... Wed, 25 Jun 2014 07:30:21 EST tuesday--rain rain rain good morning! well--we are not in the midst of a drought right now--thats for sure! woke up to rain. yesterday was rain. its nice not to have to water, and the plants are all getting good long drinks of water.
yesterday i got dressed and headed to the park. intended to run, weed, run to a nearby store for a few essentials and get several outdoor chores done. halfway to the park it began to sprinkle--no problem--i can run in that. then i spotted a squall line right about in line ... Tue, 24 Jun 2014 07:09:32 EST monday--productive weekend good morning everybody! well its a cloudy, muggy morning. have to go run and then get a section weeded before the rain shows up.
the weekend was a hardworking, outside kind of weekend--my favorite kind. had a couple customers on Saturday--some lovely people that come from a nearby city to see me each year. they bought a few plants and we visited. rob worked on the outdoor train--the stream has been loosing water badly--so he lifted and relaid a large section of the stone, raising the... Mon, 23 Jun 2014 07:16:56 EST friday--so much for an easy run hi everyone. well--i went out yesterday in the fog intending to do a nice easy run. at .88 miles my forerunner ran out of juice and switched off. so i thought--well--if i go to this point i know that is 2 miles back to where i started so i'll do that (my intent was to do 3 miles). one thing led to another--and when i finally got in my car to drive my track and find out how far i actually went--i had run 5.3 miles. i think my pace was good too--i was at about 11:30 min mile before the for... Fri, 20 Jun 2014 07:11:05 EST thursday--wednesday disappeared! good morning--back in the swing after a lost day. started really with Tuesday--early trip to the vet. dorijane is having trouble with another disc in her back. couple of x rays, some nsaids and crate rest in the hope we can heal it and avoid another surgery. at least we know a wonderful surgeon now--so that takes that anxiety factor out of the equation--but its not fun to see my sweet girl confined in a crate and not her usual happy self. so sleepless Monday night, no exercise Tuesday mo... Thu, 19 Jun 2014 07:56:35 EST monday--a visit from a friend hi everybody--hope your weekend was great! ours was busy and productive--rob finally finished the incredible block terrace he has been building--this was needed because of the huge amount of fill that had to be brought in for our garage. it essentially ended up being built on a hill--so the terraces were needed to help stabilize the whole thing. rob has an uncanny gift for rock and block--he just talks to it somehow. no one has ever shown him how to do this--he has never read a book or an... Mon, 16 Jun 2014 07:49:59 EST friday--the entrepreneurial spirit good morning! guess I didn't blog yesterday--was kind of a different day. felt kind of off in the morning so I didn't exercise per se--took the dogs to the park and then went in search of some plants. I have some charming little "planters" I got at this crazy store that has all kinds of weird stuff. its like six little buckets fused together in a circle. the buckets are nice sizes and the whole circle has a handle. they ... Fri, 13 Jun 2014 07:27:49 EST wednesday hi everyone--yesterday was a long and busy day. got my morning kettlebells done and took the girls for a quick walk at the park--didn't stay long, the skeeters were awful. got home, cleaned up and then headed up to collect my mom for her appt. with the second surgeon. he was very nice, explained the procedure and told her she is a very good candidate for the laparoscopic procedure to insert a stent in her abdominal aorta. also said she does have some time to get things arranged for my dad... Wed, 11 Jun 2014 07:23:03 EST monday--busy weekend and mystery SOLVED! hi folks--hope everyone had a great weekend. we were busy here. Saturday I worked at the new kitchen store's annual event. Phyllis pulls out all the stops to put on a wonderful event for her customers. this year the theme was Scotland--and she had 4 bagpipers, a celtic society booth. a local scot's /irish restaurant did the food and there were samples and activities galore. rosie, nancy, Marianne and I were in charge of the food sample tent. was a bit on the disorganized side, but we ma... Mon, 9 Jun 2014 07:30:36 EST friday--big job DONE. hi everyone--well yesterday I spent the bulk of my day on one job--getting the baby chickens moved OUT OF THE HOUSE. we came up with a temporary way for them to share quarters with the older girls without anyone getting hurt so out they went. it was a big, nasty job and I am so glad to have my workroom cleaned up and free of dust. I am working on a big sign to hang on the little house right now--so I needed my workroom.
didn't have any customers here yesterday--until the daylilies b... Fri, 6 Jun 2014 07:09:07 EST thursday good morning everyone--well I managed to get my run in yesterday before the rain hit. I am currently running 3 miles and working on my speed. the first mile and a half I run at 172 bpm--which on a good day works out to about a 10:40 minute mile for me. yesterday I wasn't moving as well, so it was more like 11:20--but that's still a lot faster than the 12 min. mile that was my original goal. I would like to get into 10 min. mile territory--at least for a 5K distance--so I won't be at the b... Thu, 5 Jun 2014 07:00:56 EST wednesday hi everyone. this is Siberian iris, "Ships are Sailing"--I love siberian iris. they are difficult to sell because they really pout when you pot them up or try to move them. refuse to bloom for at least a year. so my inventory of unsellables just lives here and makes me happy instead!
suuposed to start raining here--we need the moisture so that's a good thing. trying to decide if I want to take a chance running at th... Wed, 4 Jun 2014 07:08:33 EST open for business! good morning--well its after june 1 so I am officially open. rob had last week off and he really did a heroic amount of work to help me get ready.
here is a shot of my beeyoutiful new retail area--still needs a little work--fenceposts need to be cut and capped--but it's absolutely exactly what I was hoping for :

and a day and a half of backbreaking work got my little house cleaned up and ready for visitors: <... Tue, 3 Jun 2014 06:57:55 EST catching up hi everyone! been away this week--rob was on vacation so we have been working like mad around here. he has really been busting his rump to help me get ready for opening day--not everything will be done, but a lot of it is. took it easy this week--after you run a race you are supposed to rest or take easy exercise for the same number of days as miles in the race. today I am planning to go to an easy 3 miles--did two on wed.
of course we cant seem to make it through a week without a ... Fri, 30 May 2014 07:28:16 EST saturday--second 10K hi everyone--hope you are having a great weekend! the weather was absolutely lovely here and my second 10K run is now history. this is a real journey I am going on--unlike anything else I have ever done. I only hope I learn the right lessons from it.
this race began in a very pretty park in between two rivers--in fact the name of the race is "two rivers meet". there were probably a couple hundred people participating--there was a children's fun race first, followed by a 10, 15 and ... Sun, 25 May 2014 00:33:00 EST friday--adventures in horse poo good morning! well--we have our first trailer load of horse poo from Dwayne and cindy. we need to get it unloaded and go back for a second helping. I have hurt my back so we are giving it a couple days to rest and a couple days for the poo to dry out so it's lighter--we don't have a loader here, so its our two backs and a pair of shovels.
it's funny how becoming a gardener changes what you get excited about isn't it? horse poo, chopped leaves and big rocks send me into orbit for da... Fri, 23 May 2014 07:11:30 EST my workload! good morning! thought I would show you my "work in progress". this is the bulk of what I want to get done by june first (ain't gonna happen, but at least I know what I am working towards).

this section is pretty much done--some spot weeding to do.

this section needs some weeding--not a whole lot though.

<img src="http://phot... Thu, 22 May 2014 06:58:26 EST wednesday--GREAT cooking class!!!! (and a recipe) hi everyone! we had so much fun at the cooking class last night! the menu was Spanish food, which I knew nothing about. the class was completely full--every seat taken and chef brad and his assistant jordi (a simply adorable high school senior who originally hailed from England) were so entertaining and instructive. we had scallops with green sauce, mushrooms in garlic sauce, tortilla (which is the Spanish version of frittata) with potatoes and chocolate flan.
I didn't try the mush... Wed, 21 May 2014 07:26:39 EST tuesday--book recommendation hi everyone--well Monday went by in a blur for a number of reasons. I left the house at 7--wanted to get a 5 mile run in. I have added a 2 mile run to my sunday--so I am now running 4 days a week. my 10 K race is this Saturday--wanted to do 5 miles Monday and about 3 on wed. then rest thurs and Friday. will probably just walk on those days. don't think my speed will be a whole lot better--I am steadily improving, but I don't wan't to push it. mainly just want to participate and do the r... Tue, 20 May 2014 07:20:08 EST friday good morning! going to wait until 8 to go run. very chilly here--some areas had frost--looks like we might have escaped it.
everyone have a lovely Friday! Fri, 16 May 2014 07:11:32 EST thursday--dinner with friends hi everyone! its funny how every year in the spring I connect with all my friends again. it must be because we are all gardeners, and spend the winter holed up waiting for the sun and green again.
yesterday I did a 4 mile run, then came home to check my rhubarb inventory. we had been invited to Patrick's for dinner and I planned to make a rhubarb crunch. didn't have enough so I called Marianne and went over--she harvested me a nice armload of fresh rhubarb and we visited--was wonderf... Thu, 15 May 2014 07:01:22 EST plant nursery photos! hi everyone! well--we had a BLAST yesterday. it was so fun to take sherri to my favorite nursery. she really loved it and we spent a very long time there. to top it all off--they were having a new event--"taste of Tuesday" and they had food samples set up and live music. it was ever so fun. got a couple wonderful recipes during the tasting (a DELISH garbanzo bean salad and minted pears that I would have poured the entire serving tray in my mouth if no one had been looking).
In a... Wed, 14 May 2014 07:30:01 EST tuesday--ready for the fun day trip! good morning! another super busy day yesterday. did level 4 of the stairstep mix. let me tell you--running at 180 beats per minute is TOUGH. the interval only lasted 6 minutes, and i was able to sustain it, but i was working hard--not impossible but hard. that's the kind of work that makes you grow. i was really pleased to be able to make it through that interval mix.
back home, quick shower, let the chickens out and checked the baby chicks. on to the grocery store, with a coupl... Tue, 13 May 2014 07:17:25 EST monday good morning! we had a lovely rain last night. capped off a nice productive weekend. the weather was flawless both days. we got the front fountain going, a lot of wood hauled out, more weeding done, cold frames disassembled, potting mix made up--a whole bunch of small jobs. we are still a long way from done, but there is a bit of a dent in the workload showing now.
got a run in on sunday--I want to add a 4th running day each week--just did 2 miles, but my pace is slowly speeding up ... Mon, 12 May 2014 07:31:27 EST shambles strikes again! (thursday into friday) hi everyone! well yesterday was a very VERY eventful day--capped off by miss shambles--the queen of disarrangement.

thursday day started off BUSY--did kettlebells, which were briefly interrupted by Dwayne dropping of a huge load of hosta that cindy didn't want anymore. finished that, took the girls to the park. got home and then I had to run to town to stop at the drugstore, stop by the license branch to talk to ... Fri, 9 May 2014 20:13:10 EST thursday--the changing of the drawers good morning everybody! no, I don't mean my undies--I mean that wonderful day that should really be a national holiday--time to put the sweatshirts and sweaters away and bring out the sleeveless tops and shorts. my summer uniform is a cheap sleeveless top from Wal-Mart and really ratty, torn up jeans with the bottoms rolled up almost to my knees. crocs on my feet or barefoot--depending on the job I am working on. yesterday for the first time this year I got to suit up--it was WONDERFUL. ... Thu, 8 May 2014 07:27:55 EST wednesday--how your body adapts to exercise good morning everyone! think its going to be another lovely day here. trying to decide on my run--right now I am doing a stairstep mix--I am on the third interval (there are 4 total) and the fastest segment is 175 beats per minute. with my stride that equates to about a 10 minute mile pace. the intervals last 6 minutes and alternate with 3 minutes of brisk walking. the next interval set starts at 170 bpm and the highest is 180. I am not sure I am ready for that high of a pace--175 feels... Wed, 7 May 2014 07:19:31 EST tuesday--score one for me! hi everyone--well this morning was very good. first of all I took frank the hateful rooster to the livestock auction yesterday-so my hens are now much happier and calmer and I don't have to put on riot gear to enter the henhouse. that was a whole experience in and of itself--but I got the job done!
but today was a real victory. I have been following a plan of diet and exercise to lower my cholesterol--last time when I was in for my physical the dr. brought up the subject of statins in... Tue, 6 May 2014 11:56:03 EST article well worth reading about nutritional "guidelines" hi everyone! sorry I can't find a link that will just take you to this article. you will have to just cut and paste the link. believe me--its worth your time.

00142405270230367840457953376076048148
6?mg=reno64-wsj&url=http%3A%2F%2Fonlin

303678404579533760760481486.html Mon, 5 May 2014 07:26:52 EST friday--mom's birthday etc hi everybody! yesterday was my mom's birthday, so after I got my run done I went up there. she wanted to go out with just herself and me (I had left it up to her whether she wanted dad and alex, the caregiver, to go along) and she asked to go to a new flea market. we bombed around in there for awhile, then I took her to this little tiny place downtown in the town where we were. its a wonderful little place--only about 10 tables and the menu has a distinct southern flair. they have muffal... Fri, 2 May 2014 06:59:19 EST wednesday--a good day with friends good morning! yesterday was a very nice day. got a 4.5 mile run in--started in very dense fog but ended up the hour in glorious sunshine. so much so that when I got home I threw my work clothes on and spent an hour weeding. some assorted other chores later and then it was time to go to Marianne's. she watches her 4 grandkids most days and called me the other day to say she is desperate for adult conversation. so I put the word out and Patrick, nancy, rosie, mary ann and I convened at h... Wed, 30 Apr 2014 07:10:26 EST mother lode at the goodwill hi everyone. hope your Monday was good. mine was a bit hectic, but in a good way. I always do my grocery shopping on Monday and the goodwill store is right on my way. they haven't had much of interest to me recently, so I almost didn't go in. there has been a common theme at most of the area stores lately--they have raised their prices and the fun "finds" seem to have all been sent someplace else. but yesterday was different in a huge way. it looks like they have a new manager and mayb... Tue, 29 Apr 2014 07:13:52 EST monday--neuroplasticity hi everyone--I would write about my aching back--(moved concrete block and raked and unloaded my 6 cold frames over the weekend) but I just finished a book that was so interesting I want to tell you about it.
the name of the book is "the brain that changed itself" by dr. norman doidge. he is a psychiatrist. this is a wonderful book written for laypeople that explains the history of the scientific idea of neuroplasticity, and explains where the research is today. if you watch tv at all... Mon, 28 Apr 2014 07:09:13 EST friday good morning! well its raining here, but supposed to clear off later this morning. have lots of little puttery jobs to do until that happens--then I can go run. this week because I am on a rest week just doing a stairstep mix that stays at a pretty low pace. did it wed. and it felt fine.
and now I am in a technological episode--trying to figure out how to use the heart monitor that goes with my garmin. everything was going along quite well--but for some reason it won't show my hea... Fri, 25 Apr 2014 06:50:36 EST thursday--flexing old (very old) brain muscles good morning everybody! yesterday was a good day. got dinner (tuna salad and cauliflower potato salad) made early, rubbed down a pork shoulder to bake today (I now know ONE way to make pork shoulder--fortunately rob really likes it) did a gentle run and worked in the yard. then I did something I haven't done since I was a sophomore in college (during the Pleistocene). I wrote a press release.
my friend, Phyllis, who operates the wonderful kitchen store, is having an event in June. s... Thu, 24 Apr 2014 07:19:40 EST wednesday--mealtime havoc hi everyone--had a fun day yesterday with cindy and Patrick. we stopped at a plant nursery on the way and then hit the big antique mall first. cindy is a power shopper and very detail oriented. we went in every booth and looked at everything. lots of fun. cindy collects antique childrens tea sets of a specific kind (acro agate I think is what they are called) and there were several of them throughout the mall. I found a very nice small red poppy plate and a celery dish that I liked very... Tue, 22 Apr 2014 06:43:11 EST 10 K DONE!!! how good it feels to be next to last! hi everyone--well--my very first TEN K RACE is in the can! it was such a great experience. I wasn't dead last, I finished second to last. but as far as I am concerned I won the big prize. I made the decision to ask this of myself. then I took action and finally carried through with my idea and achieved my goal. this was a very small race--less than 100 runners. and I think I was probably one of the few over 40 runners there as well as being one of only two over 50 women running the 10 ...
