This has been one long week. A few weeks ago, we were still enjoying unseasonably warm winter weather (thank you, global warming). But then I had to go and state my claim that I was walking for exercise again. The bottom dropped out of the thermometer. And work picked up exponentially.

One thing I have definitely learned from FitBit is that I AM A SLUG. Yep. It was a terrible realization that my job is a majority contribut... Fri, 1 Feb 2013 23:01:26 EST South Beach Day 24 First, it was arctic cold sweeping through town. Now, a layer of snow has fallen. And I can't forget the blizzard of work that has dropped on me this week. My number of steps on the Fitbit totally reflect all three issues.

That said, I really need to find a pair of good walking boots so that I can increase my activity level. Fifteen minutes wouldn't be too much to ask of myself. Happily, my eating has stayed within my ranges, and I'm still 10 lbs down.

Unfortunately, w... Fri, 25 Jan 2013 09:48:08 EST South Beach Day 20: 1 Year SparkPeople Anniversary A year ago today I re-joined SparkPeople after a long hiatus. I used to be CarolineChicago--but decided to start completely over as ChicagoCaroline. Unfortunately, I had another hiatus from June through this Jan. 2. Life can really suck sometimes. Stuff happens. But I'm back and happy to be here. I'm making better progress out of the gate this time around. I think I just hit a serious mental breaking point at the end of December. Even at the end of pregnancy #3, I never weighed as much as I d... Mon, 21 Jan 2013 23:32:55 EST South Beach Day 17: Oops Today was the first time in 2013 that I blew my calories. No, it wasn't a disaster. I didn't even break 2,000. But I did go over my range. And after more than 2 weeks of 1,000 or less calorie days, it feels like quite a bit. I know what I did. I know where the calories went--but one lunch out with my DD (a high school sophomore) was worth it. And I tried really hard--I didn't touch the fried rice on my plate. I just ate the cashew shrimp and my hot and sour soup. Alas, cashew shrimp, accordin... Fri, 18 Jan 2013 23:05:53 EST South Beach Day 16: Phase 1.5 Well, I did decide to try my own Phase 1.5. Basically, I'm allowing myself either 1 serving of steel cut oatmeal in the morning or the warm Kashi GoLean cereal. Lots of fiber to bring down the net carbs. I'm also allowing myself one piece/serving of fruit per day. Today, I'm going to have one half of a grapefruit. However, I'm keeping away from bananas, melon, mango, papaya, etc. for now. I'm going to allow myself 1/2 sweet potato twice a week and two alcoholic beverages per week (red wine or... Thu, 17 Jan 2013 09:12:08 EST South Beach Day 13: Phase 1.5? So, 13 days into South Beach and I'm down 8 pounds. The important decision to mull over tomorrow is whether or not to begin Phase 2 on Wednesday. I am in no hurry to add any flour-based/wheat-based or simple carbs back into my life, and I have a lot of weight left to lose. However, I would like 1/2 of a grapefruit or one other serving of Phase 2 fruit once a day. And maybe 1/2 of a sweet potato once a week. I'm thinking of calling it Phase 1.5. The question just is: Do I implement on day 15 o... Mon, 14 Jan 2013 22:44:14 EST South Beach Day 11: Lobsterfest Hey! Did anyone else know that lobster is very low in calories & carbs? Lobsterfest should be 365 days a year!

Great dinner out tonight with DH and our best friends at a local seafood restaurant that is currently celebrating lobsterfest. Love going out with such supportive friends--they even built a small wall around the bread basket out of condiments, so I didn't have to look at the homemade bread. They promised, with a wink, the homemade potato chips "aren't any good." And they ... Sun, 13 Jan 2013 00:00:02 EST South Beach Day 9: Hitting the Wall I knew this is coming. I remember this from several years ago when I did South Beach. I've hit the wall. Ricotta Creme, almonds, cottage cheese, spinach, string cheese, eggs--I'm getting sick of them. But if I can make it through the next few days, I should be good to go. If I remember right, I really began losing weight in the 2nd week of South Beach. I'm down 5 pounds and have lost that bloated look.

41 I can do this! 41

I should have blogged ... Thu, 10 Jan 2013 21:20:49 EST South Beach Day 7 A bit of weight loss again today--but didn't do an official weigh in. Will do so in the morning. Other than that, this was a seriously crappy day.

I'm sure if anyone stumbles on this blog, they will immediately leave after that wonderfully inspiring intro.

Sorry. Day 7 and I could really use a drink--but all I've got is water or decaf coffee. Husband and Mom are proud, so I must continue on.

Dealing with more of DD's 504 accommodations for her bipolar. No offi... Tue, 8 Jan 2013 21:33:55 EST South Beach Day 6 Wow, this was a crapper of a day. At least I dropped .5 lbs. Could really use a drink but am settling for my vanilla ricotta creme. Pistachios, almonds, and ricotta. The South Beach trinity. We did have some nice flounder tonite. I also did not get my walk into my schedule--but perhaps tomorrow after Thing 1's 504 plan meeting and before my Calif. conference call. Blech. Time to turn in and read for a bit.

To remember for later:
Dear God,
Please untie the knots that are... Mon, 7 Jan 2013 22:26:36 EST South Beach Day 4 No miraculous 4-pound loss over night. But am ready for day 4. Plan on a 30-minute walk before lunch. Struggling with what to have for breakfast. Probably a scrambled egg and spinach. Maybe a tomato, too.

I've been analyzing my feedback at the end of the day here as well as on South Beach's site. I definitely have a salt problem. So, over the next few days, I plan to focus on keeping my salt in recommended ranges and see if that helps.

Lunch today will be a turkey bacon... Sat, 5 Jan 2013 11:16:05 EST South Beach Day 3 9:45 am
Scale says: 183! Yay! Got rid of the holiday bloat! Nothing like the scale showing downward movement to motivate me to continue through Day 3. Challenge today will be going out to eat with friends. Fri, 4 Jan 2013 10:55:10 EST South Beach Day 2 I made it through the 2nd day without any problems. Am not missing the evening wine at all--yet. If I remember right, that happens next week. However, I am also trying to shake up my evening routine, as well. I do wish I could eat those baby carrots sitting in the fridge. Tomorrow, it is off to the grocery for Phase 1-friendly foods. Turkey bacon, eggs, refried beans, low-fat cheese, spinach . . . Thu, 3 Jan 2013 23:42:50 EST South Beach Day 1 Here I am again. Back to South Beach. It helped seven years ago. Let's see if it helps this time around. South Beach/Atkins/Calorie Counting. The combo is sure to do something.

Today's goal is 1200 calories tops and to start Phase One of South Beach. I bought the Nook book, since I got rid of my hard cover years ago.

40 bounds by Oct. 1. I can DO this.

---------------------------
9:01pm

Ooof. I forgot how limiting the first phase of South Beac... Wed, 2 Jan 2013 10:49:38 EST The Ripple Effect: Getting Healthy is Like Fixing a 60-Year-Old House Our house is about to turn 60--and if you live in an older home, I'm sure you understand that dreaded ripple effect of either improving or fixing anything in your house. For instance, if you want to install recessed lighting, you may find yourself having to upgrade your electrical service. In order to upgrade your electrical service, some (of course, not all) out-dated wiring will need to be replaced. This requires patching and new paint. The Ripple Effect (also similar to the Mouse and Muffi... Sat, 19 May 2012 11:42:57 EST
