I'm going on vacation tomorrow! I am so excited and it doesn't feel real yet. I'm visiting my bro in CA for a whole week! I'm going to see my nephew and niece...not to mention their dog. I can't wait. I haven't been on a vacation in nearly a year, which is probably why it seems so surreal. I won't mind the nice weather either!

224 Mon, 23 Nov 2009 15:25:50 EST Workout buddy I've never had a workout buddy and I think it would be really nice. I just posted to the Massachusetts Sparklers team, which I joined yesterday, to see if anyone belongs to Planet Fitness, specifically in Somerville and/or Malden since those are the ones I've been to.

Do you have a workout buddy? What are the pros and cons? I'm not 100% sure how it would work and if I'd like it, but I want to try it and I can't seem to find one.

Advice? Thu, 19 Nov 2009 13:56:54 EST Feeling less stressed today Despite being so unfocused yesterday, I did get a lot done at work. I had a terrible headache most of the day, with my left eye feeling like it was going to fall out because of the pain. It was watering too, and making my left nostril run. Last night I finally took some pain medication and my bf said it sounded like a sinus headache based on it being on just one side and also the part of my head that hurt. I felt better later last night, and I don't have the pain at all today, which is great.... Wed, 18 Nov 2009 11:13:57 EST Stressed out I have a ton going on at work lately, and I am having a difficult time concentrating and focusing. I keep skipping around from one thing to another, and then the next thing I know it's time for a meeting or someone's asking me a question, and then I REALLY lose focus. I'm getting my work done, but I'm getting stressed out over small things that wouldn't normally stress me out. I'm not sure of the exact root of the problem but I'm working on it...

198 Tue, 17 Nov 2009 16:55:20 EST Long story short (kind of) I now weigh more than when I started tracking. I started out hyperthyroid, then took treatment, which made me hypothyroid. I could not do vigorous exercise for several months while taking a beta blocker, since my heart rate was so high from the hyperthyroidism that it would have been dangerous.

In the last month I gained 18 pounds. This has obviously been a shock to my body. Now that I'm hypothyroid, I'm off the beta blocker and taking a thyroid hormone supplement to bring me back ... Thu, 5 Nov 2009 16:13:58 EST More temptations Once again, I'm proud of myself. What a good feeling.

30

Aside from the large bowl of candy still on the kitchen table at work (of which I have not partaken), there is now a pie of pepperoni pizza there as well. It's almost like a game to me now to see what temptations I can avoid. I know it's only going to be more numerous in the next few months, what with Halloween candy and cookies, etc. for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukkah, New Year's, Valentine's Day...... Thu, 8 Oct 2009 13:33:21 EST Bowl of candy Continuing my bragging... :)

Several weeks ago I blogged about how someone at work had brought in a 2-pound carton of goldfish crackers, which I didn't touch. Then, about a week later someone else brought in a container of cookies, which I also didn't touch. THEN, someone else brought in a box of chocolate covered hazelnuts, which, guess what, I didn't touch. Now sitting on the kitchen table is an enormous bowl of assorted fun-size candy bars. Have I had any? No! It's interesting t... Wed, 7 Oct 2009 15:57:57 EST Which is "easier"? I just read some people's blogs about losing 60, 100, 140 pounds, etc. For me, I've never been in the same boat. The most overweight I've been is about 20-30 pounds, depending on what my "ideal" weight is. I've had doctors tell me to lose a little weight or to exercise more, but it's never been a life or death sort of thing (or overwhelming risk of diabetes, blood pressure, etc. sort of thing).

So, I started wondering: for people who are considered obese, is it "easier" to jump rig... Tue, 6 Oct 2009 14:35:01 EST Lots of vivid dreams lately I've been having lots of vivid dreams lately. The only thing I can think of that's causing this is that I've been sleeping really well. In general, I always sleep well, which I know is fortunate. Anyway, the people, places, and activities in my dreams have been varied. There have been a few more blatant symbols that I've recognized and checked out in these two books I have about dreams. Well, it's interesting at least. I love it when I can remember my dreams!

102 Tue, 29 Sep 2009 11:33:33 EST Feeling content I had such a great weekend, and last week was great too, just in terms of my relationship with my bf and my general level of contentment. It's hard to believe that just a couple weeks ago I was feeling down and I didn't even know why. Today I feel full of energy, happy, productive, and thoughtful.

224 Mon, 28 Sep 2009 17:51:02 EST They're engaged All weekend long I've been focusing on engaging my abs. I feel a slight ache in them at this point because of how much I've been doing this. I can't believe it's made such an impact already. I'm using better posture and it feels really good!

32
(I think it's funny that there's an emoticon with a mullet, but there isn't one that says "Good luck." If there is one that I'm missing, let me know!)

246 Sun, 27 Sep 2009 18:48:24 EST Great day! Today has been great and it's not over yet. My boyfriend and I went out for breakfast to one of our favorite places. We love getting up early on the weekends and going out for breakfast. Then we played mini golf, air hockey, skeeball, and arcade games, and had ice cream at the same place that has the mini golf. Then we went to a park and played basketball. It was so much fun! We just finished an early dinner and now we're going to relax with some TV or a movie and a mojito. This is a great da... Sat, 26 Sep 2009 17:51:51 EST No cookies for me :) I wrote a blog last week in which I said that I didn't eat any of the 2-pound container of goldfish crackers that someone brought into work. Well, guess what...someone brought in chocolate chocolate chip mint cookies today and not only have I not had any, but I'm not even tempted! What's going on here?!

104 Thu, 24 Sep 2009 15:42:10 EST 1 in 4 Chance Food Labels are Wrong?! I am dismayed. I was told to expect to gain some weight when I took my treatment for hyperthyroidism about 2 months ago. Up until now I hadn't, but it was inevitable. I know the treatment was necessary and I wouldn't go back and not take it or anything like that. But it's definitely disheartening to have lost weight over last year just to put most of it back on. I didn't have much to lose, and as we all know, those last 10-15 pounds seem to be the hard... Tue, 22 Sep 2009 13:31:51 EST Bleh I need to go grocery shopping after work today. I knew putting it off from yesterday would not be fun!

198 Mon, 21 Sep 2009 15:34:42 EST I love playing sports I've always loved playing sports. Give me basketball, tennis, softball, floor hockey, name it, I'm game! (Pun intended.) So this weekend I lucked out. I played softball on Friday with my work team. Too bad it was the last game of the season, but it was my first season and I'm glad I did it. It was so fun. Then, yesterday I played tennis with my boyfriend. I'm no pro, but he's...shall we say...less experienced than I am. He said afterwards that he kept hitting the ball out of ... Sun, 20 Sep 2009 17:47:49 EST 2 Pounds of Goldfish Someone at work brought in a 2-pound container of Goldfish (you know, those little crackers kids always eat). They're cheddar, but ah, they're whole grain so they're healthy. (Right.) Anyway, they're on the table in our little kitchenette, which is right next to my cubicle. I will have you know that I haven't touched 'em! They've been there for at least a week now and I haven't even had 1. I checked the nutritional info one day and saw that it's got 140 calories per serving (I think). It's no... Fri, 18 Sep 2009 16:16:07 EST Confession So, I live with my boyfriend and he has a class tonight after work. For a very long time I felt like I had a food addiction or eating compulsion or something of the sort. Whenever I knew I'd have the place to myself for the night, I'd plan what I was going to eat. Most of the time I'd get fast food on the way home and make sure I had something sweet for dessert/evening snack, and I'd pretty much go home, change, watch TV, and eat. So, like I said, my bf has class tonight so I'll have the plac... Wed, 16 Sep 2009 16:44:08 EST I must remember: DO NOT WEIGH MYSELF DURING MY PERIOD. DO NOT WEIGH MYSELF DURING MY PERIOD. It's still one of my favorite movies.

Yep, today I had a stomachache and a headache, and I was lethargic and feelng down. Guess who came to visit!

46 Sun, 13 Sep 2009 20:43:37 EST Rained out Once again, it's Friday and it's raining! My softball game was canceled. It's so fun when we actually get to play but we've had so many cancelations, it's really annoying!

46 Fri, 11 Sep 2009 21:54:16 EST Dying for weight loss? I just read this terrible story about a woman who used an "extreme crash diet" to lose weight before her wedding, and ended up dying. One strategy of the diet is to eat under 500 calories per day, which I would hope people know is unhealthy. I don't want to vilify this poor woman; I think it's terrible that she died and perhaps more terrible that she felt the need to do something so extreme to the detriment of her health. However, it seems that when people do these sorts of things, there's so... Thu, 10 Sep 2009 15:41:08 EST Calories yesterday were very low So, my calories (as well as some other items) were very low yesterday. I didn't try to make them that low, which is the weird part. I know my breakfast was pitiful. All I ate was a granola bar. That was circumstantial, because I had a 9:30 doctor appointment, so I just went straight from home. Usually I eat breakfast at work, but in this case I wasn't going to get to work until after 10 at the earliest, so I just ate the granola bar while I got ready at home. I purposely ate a True Delights o... Wed, 9 Sep 2009 13:46:27 EST Met lots of nutritional goals yesterday! Fri, 4 Sep 2009 11:45:25 EST Help? All my life I stayed up late and got up late whenever I could. I was always a night owl. It just felt natural to me. Now, the last couple of years I've started going to bed earlier and having an easier time waking up earlier. It's great on the weekends, when I wake up naturally before 8 usually, and feel like I have a long day ahead of me. Some people would say that's not that early, but to me it's incredibly early to wake up without an alarm on a weekend! Also, I've been going to bed earlier... Thu, 3 Sep 2009 17:07:35 EST New purchase I bought a bike rack for my car today. I cannot wait to ride my bike! I took it out yesterday for about 10 minutes just around my neighborhood (urban, narrow streets, hills: not a very safe place to ride). Before that I hadn't ridden in at least 2 years. Yay, I can't wait!

224 Mon, 31 Aug 2009 20:11:42 EST Fun end to busy week Tonight I'm finally going to get to play softball! I'm in the league at work and we're supposed to play every Friday but we had a bunch of cancelations due to rain or wet fields. Also, I missed two games in a row because I was under the weather with an allergic reaction to my thyroid medication that I was taking at the time. So, between my absences, cancelations, and no game on July 3 for the holiday, the last time I actually played was June 5! Wow, I knew it had been a while but I just looke... Fri, 7 Aug 2009 15:38:31 EST Busy few days I've been so busy at work the last few days. It's good because the day goes by faster, but otherwise...not so good. I haven't been that stressed, per se, but just running around like a chicken without a head. I even have three meetings tomorrow, and Fridays are usually slower. Anyway, I've been noticing a huge difference lately in my appetite. It is so cool! I used to be ravenous all the time...or at least that's how I felt. But now I can go hours without even thinking of snacking, and other ... Thu, 6 Aug 2009 16:36:31 EST How rude I usually wait for inspiration before writing my blog post. This one just fell in my lap.

I was just finishing lunch at my desk when a coworker came over to ask me a question. I just met her a couple of months ago when she became part of my department. She said something like, "Oh am I interrupting your lunch?" As I started to respond with "That's OK," she said, "Looks really healthy" in a sarcastic tone. I think it's rude to put your nose in other people's business, including to c... Tue, 4 Aug 2009 12:26:35 EST Peer pressure! Last night I went out to dinner with my bf and his family. It was his mom's birthday a few days ago and she chose Olive Garden. I did my homework and stuck to my first. I ordered the herb-grilled salmon, which comes with steamed broccoli. It was very tasty and pretty low calorie, etc. I did have a breadstick but just one, and I had some salad. All I drank was water...

My bf's father, who I was sitting next to, asked if I was going to order dessert. I said I didn't know an... Mon, 3 Aug 2009 17:08:22 EST Good week! I had a pretty good week in terms of food and eating. Two nights this week I didn't have anything to eat after dinner! This is pretty huge for me...very rare in the past. Perhaps it's a new trend.

224 Fri, 31 Jul 2009 16:02:37 EST Workday lunch I almost always bring my lunch to work, and I almost always have a balanced, healthy sandwich. I have a multi-grain or rye sandwich thin, lots of Boston lettuce, about a teaspoon of mustard, 1 slice of low sodium cheese (various kinds), and 2-3 slices of low sodium cold cuts (various kinds). For a while I was eating it along with a snack bag of pretzels, baked chips, baked cheetos, etc. A few days ago I started eating a clementine in place of the snack bag. I've cut my lunch down about 100 ca... Thu, 30 Jul 2009 15:36:57 EST Dealing with other people's perspectives So...last night, I brushed my teeth and I was getting ready for bed. My boyfriend came in and we were talking for a bit, but he wasn't going to bed yet. I said something about how I didn't have any snacks or dessert that night after dinner. I was proud of myself because eating late-night or after dinner snacks has been one of my downfalls for a very long time. It's sort of a big thing when I don't, for me. However, from his perspective, this isn't a big deal because it's not something he's st... Wed, 29 Jul 2009 12:11:13 EST The weather is affecting my nutritional intake Yesterday, it was so hot and humid that my boyfriend and I could not cook or even eat in our apartment, so we went to Applebee's. We didn't even care where we went, but we just had to go somewhere with air conditioning! We do have AC but only in our bedroom, and we have fans in every other room. My dinner last night was pretty horrific. To be honest, I know I had the option to eat more healthily but I didn't. That's my own fault. But damn, the humidity is killing me!

18 Tue, 28 Jul 2009 16:17:02 EST My weekend I had such a great weekend! I was both productive and relaxed. I both spent a lot of time with my boyfriend and alone. It was basically a perfect weekend!

30 Mon, 27 Jul 2009 12:57:46 EST Back to playing softball! Provided it doesn't rain anymore, I'm going to play softball tonight for the first time in several weeks! The first few weeks were because we couldn't play because it was either raining or the fields were drenched. But the last two weeks, I haven't been able to play because of my allergic reaction to my thyroid medication, which caused itchiness, hives, and joint pain. Yesterday was the first day I didn't have any joint pain in weeks. Before that I had pain in my shoulders, neck, back, left a... Fri, 24 Jul 2009 14:49:49 EST Blogging I'm not someone who's regularly kept a journal or blog before. I sort of like it. It's just a way to get my thoughts out in a coherent way. I took a trip to New Zealand a few years ago, and I kept an excellent journal every single day. I knew I'd want to be able to remember everything I did and everywhere I went, and also match it up with my photos. It wasn't always easy but I wrote everything in that journal. I did it because I knew I'd want it in the future. It was a goal. I want to start t... Tue, 21 Jul 2009 11:31:25 EST Monday again This weekend kind of sped by. Saturday seemed pretty long but yesterday seemed too short. Maybe that's just because it was Sunday and I knew today was coming. It's not that I even dislike coming to work. I've just always had an issue with things ending. I used to stay up so late when I was younger (until pretty recently actually), even if I was tired. I just couldn't bare having the day be over if I didn't feel like it was satisfactory enough. It took me a little while to understand why I fel... Mon, 20 Jul 2009 11:53:01 EST Feeling fine I had my iodine treatment yesterday, which is a drink flavored with strawberry Kool-Aid. I don't feel any different, but I'm now radioactive for the next three months. I only have restrictions for the next week though. I have to sleep alone for 3 days, wash my clothes separately for 7 days, use separate dishes and utensils for 7 days, etc. The restrictions aren't terrible, and I'm just glad to have had the treatment sooner rather than later, which would have been September. Sat, 18 Jul 2009 12:29:58 EST Quick update So, I went for my thyroid uptake and scan yesterday, which was done promptly. Unfortunately, I then waited for 1.5 hours. When the secretary finally called me up, she said that the technician had actually forgotten to bring up my iodine drink (treatment) from the lab, so could I come back tomorrow. I was in disbelief. But what can I do? I said yes and I'm going back today at 1:30 to meet with the doctor and take the treatment.

Ahhhhhhhhh, frustration!

24 Fri, 17 Jul 2009 08:49:53 EST Big couple of days So, I was diagnosed with Grave's Disease (one type of hyperthyroidism) about 2 months ago. I saw an endocrinologist right away, who said my condition was "very severe" and I started on medication that night. My pulse was extremely fast (~140) and he said that if I were 50 or 60 years old, he would be concerned that I'd have a heart attack! (I'm turning 30 next month.)

Long story short, the beta blocker is working great. My pulse is normal and I feel better in a lot of ways. But, I ... Thu, 16 Jul 2009 14:16:19 EST I did it! After weeks of not using SP much, and not tracking my food specifically, I've been using the food tracker about 75% of the time for the last 2 weeks. Yesterday, for the first time since then, I tracked every single thing that passed my lips AND went under my calorie maximum! Yes! I rule!

244 Fri, 5 Jun 2009 13:23:12 EST Day after Yes! I'm proud to say I didn't over-indulge at dinner yesterday! I ended up not eating any of the bread and butter; for some weird reason I wasn't even in the mood! I ate my entire salad as planned. There were no low fat or low sodium alternatives for dressing, and I forgot to ask for it on the side, but I got what sounded like the least bad option, which was zinfandel vinaigrette. For my entrée, I resisted the chicken parm with pasta, or another such saucy, cheesy meal. Instead I had angel h... Wed, 6 May 2009 15:05:44 EST Dinner tonight So, my boyfriend's parents are in town and they asked to meet us for dinner at an Italian restaurant known for it's humongous portions! I've been there once, and I had chicken parm (the size of my head), salad, and bread. Now, I'm all for not depriving oneself, but I know it's going to be hard to resist stuffing my face. So, my plan is to have one piece of bread, the entire salad (with dressing on the side and fat-free or low sodium if available), some (maybe half?) of my entree, and only wat... Tue, 5 May 2009 16:06:40 EST Monday Monday You know that song? It's in my head but I don't really know what it's about. Anyway, my weekend was crazy because after playing softball on Friday, I was SO sore. I could not believe it, but then again, I haven't played in about 6 years. I was the catcher, so I did a lot of half-squatting and throwing. It was really fun though and I know I won't be as sore the more I play. It was really good exercise too. The team is all guys except for me, which was interesting. They've all played together f... Mon, 4 May 2009 16:00:58 EST Friday :) Who doesn't get happy at the word, "Friday"? Well, OK, I know there are people who work on the weekends. I used to be one of them. I worked on Sundays for years. Anyway, it's Friday and the week went by pretty fast, considering I didn't have much work to do. I really hope my softball game doesn't get canceled. It's the first one of the season and it's my first season playing. Wish me luck! Fri, 1 May 2009 15:07:25 EST Good choices I'm proud of myself. About an hour after I ate my healthy lunch, I was feeling in the mood for chocolate or something else sweet. I decided to have a no sugar added hot chocolate, which has only 60 calories. It also has a lot of calcium, AND it was free because they supply them here at my office. It did the trick and suppressed my craving. I'm patting myself on the back. 30 Thu, 30 Apr 2009 14:29:13 EST Good workout yesterday I went to the gym after work yesterday. I was hoping it wouldn't be too crowded, since the weather was so "nice" out. (Yes, I like the sun and clear skies, but not 90+ degrees!) I was right...I got a good elliptical (working TV, the brand I like, but no movable arms), and I didn't have to wait for it at all. Then, I did my nautilus circuit of 6 machines. I felt great afterwards. Today I'm a tiny bit sore in my pecs (I have pecs?) but nothing bad at all. :) I'm excited because my first softbal... Wed, 29 Apr 2009 14:39:03 EST
