Wed, 14 Feb 2018 15:26:53 EST Finally a Run! Tuesday morning we got another round of snow, about 2 inches on top of what we got last Friday. The previous snow/ice had not melted! This morning I was ready to get out of the house so I put on my running gear for single digit temperatures and got out for a walk. It has been one week since I last ran. I have been riding my bike and doing strength training but I was really missing running! I walked one mile being careful to watch where I put my foot down. After the one mile I thought I would ... Wed, 17 Jan 2018 15:59:21 EST 5th Day of No Running 😖 My last day to run outside was last Wednesday because of the weather! I do not have a treadmill and I have not been able to run outside because of ice and snow. That is not to say that I have been sitting on my rump not doing anything. I have ridden my bike on the trainer several days and I even attempted to run in the house one day. I finally gave up and went for a walk in the snow. I tried to imagine that I was walking on the beach but that was hard to do with a puffy coat and boots on! I h... Mon, 15 Jan 2018 09:29:34 EST What I discovered when I slowed my eating! Food has a taste! I usually scramble eggs in olive oil and this morning I discovered that you can really taste the olive oil. I don't like it, but I have been eating so fast that I had not noticed the taste before! My husband had made a comment one day months ago but I told him it was healthier. He has not complained since then. I owe him an apology! I like olives but not in my eggs! I am looking forward to finding out what other foods taste like! Tue, 5 Dec 2017 08:34:43 EST St. Jude Half-Marathon Report My 5th half-marathon is in the books. It is quite the experience running through the St. Jude campus during the half-marathon. The course was somewhat of a challenge. There were quite a few hills, some steep and some just long. I finished in 2:41:02. It wasn't my best time but I just wanted to run without regard to the time.

Back on track tomorrow with my eating and tracking food. Sat, 2 Dec 2017 21:52:44 EST Finally time for half-marathon! I registered for the St. Jude half-marathon in June! I have trained for 14 weeks and I am injury free, except for a few aches. Six months is a long time to wait and anticipate a race. Ready to join the corral tomorrow morning! Going to do it this time! 312 Fri, 1 Dec 2017 08:23:47 EST Compulsive Eating! I have been a member of Spark for almost 9 years. I started out really tracking my food and exercise but over the years I have faded. I made a feeble attempt to reconnect last spring but I was not committed so that too fell to the wayside. I recently had an opportunity to really take a look at myself and the steps to get my eating under control. I am a compulsive eater! I eat when I am hungry but I also eat when I am bored, stressed, upset, or just because the food is there. Not only do I eat... Wed, 29 Nov 2017 14:00:30 EST A small victory! We went to the beach last Thursday for 6 days, we got back on Tuesday. When I got on the scales Wednesday morning I was shocked at the weight I had gained, even with keeping up my running. Obviously my calories-in had exceeded my calories-out. So I immediately regrouped and fixed a healthy breakfast, and lunch to take to work with me. The rest of the week I really focused on eating fruits, veggies, and protein. I also made sure I got all of my runs in.

When I got on the scales yest... Mon, 17 Jun 2013 12:35:59 EST Knee and Elbow Have Road Rash! Well it has finally happened. This morning I was at mile 3 of a 4 mile run when I tripped on uneven concrete and fell. My left hand has a small place on it but my right knee and right elbow took the brunt of the fall. My hand-held water bottle protected my right hand. I also have a scratch on my right hip. As soon as I fell I jumped right up, waved off the young man who had stopped to help me, and kept right on going. Fortunately I had my water bottle to wash off my knee and elbow as I ran. I... Mon, 17 Jun 2013 12:22:42 EST St. Jude Half-Marathon Registration I have registered for the December 7 St. Jude Memphis Half-Marathon! I am so excited. Now I have to get registered for the Murfreesboro Middle Half-Marathon for October 12. Registration opens on June 1 and it will sell out quickly.

363 366 Fri, 3 May 2013 23:10:50 EST Struggling this month! This past month has really been a struggle with my eating. I have continued to run. I am training for a 10K race on May 11. But I have regained 7 pounds from my lowest point of 142. I am eating way beyond full and eating a lot of junk food. I know that I can't just rely on running to lose the weight, I have to get control of my eating. I have started today with paying more attention to what I am eating! I have 25 pounds left to lose and I have to get back in control!

24 Sun, 28 Apr 2013 16:47:27 EST Half-Marathon Race Results This morning I ran my second half-marathon, the first one was three years ago. I finished today with a time of 2:16:45 for a PR. I also came in 2nd in the 50 - 54 year old age group so I brought home a trophy. I was really surprised to get a trophy.

The temperatures were really warmer than what I have been training in. Two weeks ago I ran in a snow shower. Today it was 60 degrees. It was really windy too.

I really enjoyed the run and I am looking forward to my next race.... Sat, 16 Mar 2013 15:06:25 EST Headed out to run half-marathon! I am about to leave my house to go run my second half-marathon, first one in three years! Sat, 16 Mar 2013 07:31:23 EST A Look Back at February! My half marathon training plan is going great! I have run two long runs of 13.1 on two Saturdays this month. The half is two weeks from this Saturday and I have two long runs left on the schedule. I have been adding in some interval runs and speed work. I have reduced my time 30 minutes from my first half 3 years ago. I am also 20 pounds lighter than I was 3 years ago so that helps. I am holding my weight steady, within 3 pounds, and I don't think I will lose any more before the half marathon... Thu, 28 Feb 2013 20:16:05 EST Looking Back on January January has been a great month in regards to running but the weight loss has been slow and tedious. Two weeks ago I had a very stressful week and returned to stress eating. After the scales showed a gain of 3 pounds at the end of that week I knew it was time to pull in the reins! I had to put a stop to that. The last two weeks I have been in much better control with my eating. I lost the 3 pounds I gained and so far this week I am down an additional 2 pounds. I have not seen 143 on the scale... Wed, 30 Jan 2013 16:13:57 EST January 1, 2013 I started this year with a 5 mile run! Cool and damp but it felt great!

363 Tue, 1 Jan 2013 11:57:42 EST Last Day of 2012 Yesterday morning I had a 10 mile run on the half-marathon training schedule. I took my Garmin that I got for Christmas and a pair of my new shoes, and some warm clothes, and started my run. By mile 8 I was feeling really good so I thought I would just continue to run. I also had my GU and Gatorade so I was refueled. When I hit 11 miles I thought, well one more and I can finish 2012 with a 12 mile run! And I did! I felt great after my run. I stretched real well and used my foam roller. I have... Mon, 31 Dec 2012 11:51:09 EST Shoe Intervention! My favorite running shoes, Asics Kayano 18, have of course been upgraded for next year to the 19s. So the 18s are now on sale and with discounts for ordering on line I now have three pairs coming from two different places. My daughter and husband do not understand. They keep saying that I already have too many running shoes! They think I need an intervention. They are the crazy ones, they just don't understand that when you find the right running shoe you just can't have too many! Besides, th... Tue, 11 Dec 2012 08:35:54 EST Catching Up The last few weeks have been very hectic. I did run a 5K Turkey run on Thanksgiving Day. Had a lot of fun! I am on schedule to run a 10K Saturday morning. I hope the rain holds off until after the race.

This time of year is very difficult for me in regards to eating. I am really trying to stay focused on eating healthy. When I do give in to indulgence I stop myself before it gets out of control and the next few days I get back on track with eating food that is good for me. There ar... Thu, 6 Dec 2012 14:33:34 EST 10K Race Report I ran my second 10K, first one in two years, today! I ran a PR of 1:05:45. It is a well directed race so I really enjoy this one. They had a record number of runners this year. I enjoyed catching up with some runners I haven't seen in quite some time. My daughter was able to go with me to cheer me on. I think she is ready to start running too. She is recovering from a shoulder injury but when she is cleared by the doctor she wants to start running.

And tonight I am celebrating with... Sat, 10 Nov 2012 19:36:31 EST The Cost of Food in Junk Food Machines It has been several months since I wanted a snack in the afternoon and I had not brought something from home. But this afternoon I thought I would get a package of pretzels, thought this would do the least amount of damage. Well, was I shocked at the prices. The price of the chips and candy in the machine had jumped at least 10% since May 1. I could not believe that a candy bar cost $1.10. I was not planning to buy a candy bar but I definitely wouldn't when I saw the price. And I refused to p... Tue, 30 Oct 2012 16:29:22 EST Registered for a 10K today! I have registered for my second 10 K! I ran one two years ago. This one will be Nov. 10th and then I am going to run one on Dec. 8. I have decided to register for a local half-marathon in the spring!

Now I just have to train injury free!
Mon, 22 Oct 2012 21:27:53 EST Side Effects of Weight Loss As of today I have lost 48 pounds since May 1, 2012. I have noticed a few "side effects" of my weight loss the past few days. As I sit at my desk working at my computer, my butt hurts. I don't have as much padding on my butt so I am having some pressure points on the bones of which I am sitting. I noticed this also last Saturday when I was sitting on a plastic chair at an outdoor wedding. At least my office chair has some padding but I certainly can't sit very long, which I shouldn't do anywa... Fri, 19 Oct 2012 11:38:17 EST PR today at local 5K This morning I went to the Greenfield, TN Fire Prevention 5K. I prepared this week to try to run my best 5K race. I ate properly and timed my run schedule this week so I would be well rested this morning. My last PR was a little over 32 minutes. This morning I actually started out faster than I had intended to do but I felt really great. My one mile time was faster than what I have run in a long time. There were a couple of pretty good hills with one that was steep. By the time I was at the 3... Sat, 13 Oct 2012 12:41:16 EST End long week with long slow run! This has been a very long week. I am so thankful that I started running again back in June because it has been my major stress reliever. I found out on Tuesday when my official last day of work, which isn't until June 30, 2014 but it can really bring you down.

I got a flu shot on Thursday and I think it had an affect on my run this morning. My plan for this morning was 5 - 6 miles, slow run. When I started out it felt like my legs weren't connected to my upper body. I seemed to be ... Sat, 29 Sep 2012 09:54:46 EST Weekend full of food! Yesterday was a day of food. We went to a family reunion Saturday for lunch. A lot of food but I looked at the options before I put anything on my plate. Someone had brought a bowl of sliced home grown tomatoes. I loaded up my plate with those. I also had some broccoli salad and a little bit of bar - b- q. I also allowed myself to have two small squares of cake.

Last night we went to the wedding of a really close family friend. The reception included bar-b-q again and grilled chick... Sun, 16 Sep 2012 16:09:53 EST Really needed the distractions! Yesterday I was able to spend a few hours with my mother and sisters. We then when to a family cookout with my husband's side of the family. I really needed the distraction from my worries and concerns about my job being phased out.

This morning I got up just a little bit later but I did my usual Monday morning run. It was very hot and humid this morning but I was determined to finish my regular run. I was slower but I know a lot of that was because of the humidity. We had a few da... Mon, 3 Sep 2012 09:24:16 EST Stressfull Week! This morning I tried to run my usual Friday morning run and it was very difficult. It is amazing how much stress can have an effect on your body. I found out Wednesday afternoon that my program is being shut down and I have two years to work. We have to teach-out the students who are currently in the program so at least I have that time. This was a total shock to me. I was not expecting this at all. There were some personnel issues that were being investigated but it was not ever indicated th... Fri, 31 Aug 2012 17:51:26 EST Race Results - 5K Ran my first 5K race in two years this morning. My time was 33:45. I won 1st place in my age group of 50 - 59. I think there were 2 of us in that group but that is okay. It was great to see some of the runners from races before.

363 364 Sat, 25 Aug 2012 11:09:04 EST 6.1 miles this morning! This was my longest run to date this year, 6.1 miles. I really had to push myself mentally to finish. I wasn't tired it just seemed like it was a long run, 75 minutes. It has been a while since I ran that long so it will just take time to adjust. And the temperature was really nice in the low 60's. I am really ready for those kind of temps in the mornings!

I finally got my Amphipod reflective vest that I ordered last week. I tried it out Friday morning. I have ordered flashers also... Sat, 18 Aug 2012 10:18:49 EST Registered for 1st 5K in 2 Years! I have registered to run my first 5K in two years. It is next Saturday and the course is similar to my usual run. This morning I ran an 11 minute mile, I mixed in some intervals of faster pace and I did a sprint on the last 2 tenths of a mile. I am excited about doing the race. We have had some cooler temperatures in the mornings for the last few days so that helped. I hope we are not back into the upper 80s on the race morning!

I think I have decided on my next half-marathon for n... Wed, 15 Aug 2012 08:58:30 EST LSR of 5.2 miles! The temperature was perfect this morning for a long slow run, for me, of 5.2 miles. My longer runs on Saturdays have been between 4 and 4.4 miles so this morning I thought I would stretch that out a little more and try for 5 miles. I was definitely slow but I ran the entire time. I even finished strong on the hill.

My husband and I went out to eat with friends last night and I did great with paying attention to what I was eating. I can't believe that I ordered the grilled chicken w... Sat, 11 Aug 2012 09:17:14 EST Running with Purpose! This morning my mantra was "run with purpose!" I finally broke the 12 minute mile, ran an 11.8 min. mile this morning. I kept repeating to myself, "run with purpose." That and temps in the mid 60s helped to make my run great!

What a great way to start my day!

334 185 Wed, 8 Aug 2012 08:59:28 EST Monday Morning Run This morning I ran 3.3 miles in 40 minutes, which is a 12.12 minute mile pace. It is frustrating when the fitness tracker still calls it walking at a 13 minute mile when I ran the entire time and it was closer to a 12 minute mile than a 13 minute mile. I actually had an 11 minute mile pace at the one mile mark but I have one hill just past the 1 mile mark and another one at 2.7 mile mark.

I am determined that Wednesday morning I will run at a 12 minute mile pace. I plan to go to be... Mon, 6 Aug 2012 09:37:21 EST Stormy Morning! I had everything ready to get up and run this morning. When my alarm went off at 4:50 I also heard the crack of thunder and a lot of rain. The rain doesn't bother me but I don't want to run in a storm. It has cleared off throughout the day so I plan to do a short run this afternoon on the walking trail in the park. I will try again in the morning with an early, longer run before it heats up.

27 363 Fri, 3 Aug 2012 15:55:23 EST Great Weekend with Mindful Eating! I went to the wine tasting with my daughter on Saturday and had a great time. I really paid attention to how much I was tasting because I know the calories can add up fast.

We went to see my Mother on Sunday. We convinced her to let us bring lunch so my daughter fixed a gorgeous looking lasagna and I fixed a salad and low calorie Angel Lush dessert. I did great with lunch, I fixed me a salad and I had a little less than a cup of lasagna and less than 1/4 cup of the dessert. I didn... Mon, 30 Jul 2012 09:02:34 EST 30 minute run and more My plan this morning was an out and back 30 minute run. Well, I ran the 30 minutes without a walk break, which was just a little under 2.3 miles, but I was still over 1 1/2 miles from home. So I walked for 2 minutes while I sent a text to my son who is doing his check-ride for his Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument rating today. And then I started running again and ran for about 10 minutes, walked for 1 minute and ran again. I ended up running/walking 4.2 miles in a little less than 56 mi... Sat, 28 Jul 2012 08:55:16 EST More Run Than Walk! I have been doing intervals of running 14 minutes and walking 1 minute for three cycles. This morning when I started running I was feeling great. I thought, why not just see how long I can run. I am scheduled to run 30 minutes straight tomorrow morning but I thought I would just see how far I could run today. I ran for 29 minutes without taking a walk break. I would have kept going but I still had 1 mile to get back home so I took my 1 minute walk break and then ran 14 minutes to just a littl... Fri, 27 Jul 2012 08:44:18 EST Made It To My First Goal! I have met my first goal! I have lost 22 pounds since May 15. My goal was 20 pounds by August 1. I have averaged 2 pounds per week. So I have reset my goal for another 20 pounds by October 1.

I hope to meet another goal on Saturday and run for 30 minutes without taking a walk break. This morning was my second run/walk interval of 14/1 and I felt great.

Eating out was a problem for me but I am doing better with control and ordering wisely!

This is going to be ... Mon, 23 Jul 2012 08:54:11 EST Great Exercise Week! This has been a great week for getting in my run/walk intervals and some core work. I still need to spend more time on my core but I am getting there. This morning I completed a run/walk of 14/1 for 3.6 miles. My intention was for a 4 mile run but I was pooped by the time I had finished 3 cycles of the intervals. Part of my problem is that I have a hill near the end of my run and I was tired when I reached the top of it and 3.6 miles. If I had taken the 1 minute walk break and started running... Sat, 21 Jul 2012 08:26:29 EST Much Better Start to the Week! This week is going much better than the end of last week. I had a great run/walk yesterday with my run extended to 13 minutes and walk of 2 minutes. I finished 3.4 miles. I really look forward to pushing the running out to 30 minutes in the next couple of weeks. I am ready to just run.

I have been trying to find a 5K to run in the fall, October or November. When I get to where I can run for 30 minutes without stopping I am going to start training for a 5K. I miss the fun of running... Tue, 17 Jul 2012 12:28:50 EST Feeling Blah Today! I was supposed to run this morning but we were late getting to bed last night after a long day, so I turned the alarm clock off this morning. My son is moving into an unfurnished apartment this weekend so I have been trying to get some things together for him. Yesterday I ran several errands in addition to meeting my husband to take the truck in for some repairs before we take a load of furniture to Murfreesboro Saturday. It was almost 10:00 last night before I ate supper and I could feel it ... Fri, 13 Jul 2012 10:38:08 EST Running with my shadow! This morning was a little cooler with an awesome fog. As I was running under the street lights I noticed that my shadow was playing with me. As I got closer to the light my shadow was following close behind. As I was almost completely under the light it was running with me, and then as we ran out of the light it was ahead of me, pacing me. I imagined it saying, "come on, it is a great morning, move it!" I needed that pep talk the whole run, my butt was dragging this morning.

I not... Mon, 9 Jul 2012 09:10:51 EST Last Day of June I have had a great week and a great month. We went out of town Thursday night to attend a concert with my husband and daughter. We checked into the hotel and then went to get something to eat before going to the outdoor concert. With the temperature 105 degrees at that time I really didn't want much to eat anyway. I was very proud of myself for choosing a salad when my husband and daughter ordered juicy hamburgers and fries for her and onion rings for him. I was very satisfied with my salad a... Sat, 30 Jun 2012 09:00:35 EST Tempting Weekend but SURVIVED! I'm not sure why, because it wasn't a special weekend, but I wanted to eat everything in sight! I had to get out of the kitchen and just keep reminding myself that I am building healthier habits! It was worse on Saturday than Sunday. I did run just a little farther on Saturday morning, at 5:00 so the day seemed to be really long. I had my oatmeal and I even added an extra 1/2 cup of fruit to breakfast. Lunch was filling and healthy but I didn't eat my snack that I have gotten used to eating a... Mon, 25 Jun 2012 13:26:13 EST Early Run this Morning! I had the alarm set for 4:45 this morning but when it went off I hit the snooze button. However, at 5:00 I got myself up and put on my running stuff and headed out the door. It was a perfect temperature. And I had forgotten how beautiful the sunrise is during a run. It felt great to be out this morning.

There were a few of us out on the road. One gentleman came rapidly running past me as I started up the last hill of the run. He was up that hill in no time. Based on his haircut and... Mon, 18 Jun 2012 13:07:11 EST My Kids Are So Great! Yesterday when my kids were trying to decide where to take dad for lunch, they asked me about an Italian restaurant. They wanted to know if there was something there that I would be able to eat that was within my calorie limit and if it would be too much of a temptation. Turns out we couldn't get reservations at the Italian restaurant so we went to O'Charley's where I had the grilled salmon and a salad. My other side item was a baked potato plain but I boxed that up to send back with my son i... Mon, 18 Jun 2012 09:02:55 EST Calendar Full of Workouts It feels so good to look at my calendar for June and see so many days of workouts and of course, the days of rest. I don't want to experience an injury like I had before so I am really going to pay attention to those days.

With the thermometer consistently in the upper 80s and low 90s it is time to move my walk/runs to the early mornings. I have gotten up two days this week early enough to run but I am going to have to get up even earlier to beat the heat. This morning I was out o... Sat, 16 Jun 2012 09:36:02 EST Cholesterol Down! I went to the doctor yesterday for my 6 month check on my hypothyroidism and my hypertension. My blood pressure was great even though it goes up every time I walk into that clinic, I don't know why! Most importantly my cholesterol had dropped 50 points. It is well below 200 now. I am so thankful that I am able to control it with diet. My family history of heart disease has made me want to keep it under control.

And according to my chart from 6 months ago I had lost 1 pound. My pla... Fri, 8 Jun 2012 08:51:18 EST Ran 1/2 Mile Tonight! The last three weeks I have been working up to intervals of 4 minutes of walking and 2 minutes of running for 6 times. When it came to the last run I thought I would just see how far I could run. It wasn't fast, because I am a turtle, but I was able to run the 1/2 mile. When I stopped to walk I felt like I could have run more but I didn't want to push it too much!

Slowly but surely I will work my way back to running 30 minutes or more each run. My ultimate goal is to get back to ru... Tue, 5 Jun 2012 23:23:40 EST
