CARPENSM's SparkPeople Blog CARPENSM's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community 100 lbs gone!! I can't believe it.

It's been almost 3 years (will be in March)... but today it snuck up on me.

I was hoping it would happen before the holidays but have learned to be very patient with the numbers on the scale over the last few years. My body doesn't like to move outside of it's own schedule so I focus on other indicators and wait, and it always catches up.

My 30th birthday is at the end of the month and all I knew was that I wanted to lose those last 2 lbs ... As many of you know I really don't like the word diet, its all about lifestyle change for me.

Week one is more like a diet and is designed to prime you for the rest of the lifestyle. I'm not sure if I buy into it but when my personal trainer suggested it she said "its just one week." So she was right, I'd give her just one week.

I'm not starting week 2+ which is exactly what you'd exp... Mon, 13 Jun 2011 08:04:57 EST Staring One-derland in the Face As many of you will know, I’ve been struggling with some plateaus for a while now. In the last year I’ve lost about 15 lbs. Yes that’s still movement but 15 lbs over a year is frustrating. I’ve increased my fitness ability and kept up (even improved) my healthy eating habits. Despite feeling discouraged at times, I’m very committed to eating healthy and being active so was able to stay on track. After all, even if I stayed where I’ve been that’s really not that bad. Sure its not ideal… ... Fri, 6 May 2011 15:05:15 EST How do you deal with a case of “Fat Head” Ok, I hate the F-word as much as the next person and really think it should be treated like the other f-word… or even worse because in my life the 3 letter F-word has probably been more damaging.

I’ve been “the fat girl” my whole life. I was a chubby kid, a chubby teen and then eventually… an obese adult. Its funny, people are resistant to use the O-word… I know it scared me for a long time.

At this point I’ve lost 81 lbs in my weight loss journey. I’m sitting at 203 l... Thu, 3 Feb 2011 10:36:51 EST My first 30 min Run!! I've been calling it my first 30 min interval but at this point I'm not sure I should still call them intervals! I really just went for a 40 min run with a 5 min walking break afer 30 min :P

I was on a different treadmill where I couldn't see the time. I had to choose between seeing the time or the distance so I was aiming for something else other than time. It worked great!

My legs are a little rubbery but I'm so happy!

I also decided today that I'm sign... Wed, 2 Feb 2011 21:33:41 EST 2 days out of town - I Missed my Kitchen! Tue, 1 Feb 2011 21:52:57 EST Some lessons from Sparkpeople I've never believed in hangover foods until today. I really don't drink very often at all. It goes along with the healthier lifestyle.

Anytime I'm feeling a little "under the weather" I usually eat light and safe. But today was a little different... it was worse. Tomorrow is my 29th birthday and there was some celebration going on.

Everytime I would think of foods this morning I wanted to throw up. I didn't luckily. But I did eat a burger and felt a lot better!! ... Sat, 29 Jan 2011 18:22:24 EST Plateau Busted! Well so far anyway...

I've been stuck on a plateau for some time now... bouncing around between 206 and 209.

The Christmas season was a little rough on my healthy lifestyle this year although I guess having the flexibility is what makes it a healthy lifestyle and not a diet.

I felt refreshed in the new year and started tracking my food again. I'd been doing a good job of intuitive eating but it seemed to only help me lose lbs for about a month and then I... Mon, 17 Jan 2011 19:26:37 EST I love a good workout surprise Today was a work at home day. Those can be bad at times for staying on track because one of my favourite ways to procrastinate is to snack! But I was super focused on task today, got a ton of work done, and did great with not snacking.

I even developed a brand new smoothie with a shot of protein in it:

I wanted a smoothie that packed a little more punch because I had breakfast late so had a lighter lunch a... Tue, 11 Jan 2011 20:51:21 EST Struggling with Some New Eating Habits Ok I realize that this isn’t a problem that most people struggle with (especially post holiday) but it’s been a concern of mine for a while.

I stopped tracking my food in September 2010 after 16 months of tracking on Sparkpeople. Let me preface this with saying: I truly believe in the power of tracking food and think its great! For me, however, I was starting to become more focused on the number than the nutrition and would always aim for the low end of my range and didn’t feel li... Tue, 4 Jan 2011 11:23:50 EST Recap of 2010 and on to 2011 So I’m going to start by saying that I’m really not a resolution type of person. I like to set more general goals and I don’t always think it’s a good idea to have a specific start date because it leads to doing the opposite before (i.e. I’m going to stop eating chocolate on January 1st so I’ll eat as much as I can over Christmas). That being said, I think this time of year is a great time to focus your goals and start thinking about what we want the next year to look like.

For m... Fri, 17 Dec 2010 11:06:48 EST The Love / Hate Relationship with Fitness I’m happy to say that I finally have a good relationship with fitness in my life. I genuinely enjoy it and if I go a few days without anything physical I start to crave it. I use it for fun and for a stress reliever.

That being said… I find I’m getting pickier about my fitness. 20 months ago when I started on SP (OMG has it really been that long?!?) I used to force myself to work out and go to the gym. I did 90% of my workouts at home and did the gym once a week because I kne... Thu, 16 Dec 2010 11:37:38 EST My First 5k Well so far its been a busy weekend! My Saturday started a little earlier than I usually like one to start but it was well worth it to run my very first 5k!

It was super cold and tons of people at the Santa Shuffle. Everyone was dressed in Santa hats or outfits. I had brought an elf hat to wear but it just wasn't keeping my head warm enough so I had to ditch it in favour of my hood.

So I thought I had to get a picture of my first 5k...

But...I can't believe ... Sun, 5 Dec 2010 11:53:16 EST Need some input from the runners out there! Last night was a weird night. I was planning on running / walking 5km on the treadmill to get a real sense of how long it would take me. I’m running a 5km on December 4th (read: OMG its so close I don’t have enough time… panic!!!). I’ve accepted the fact that I will not be able to run the entire race.

I haven’t had enough time to kick my own butt and my body just isn’t cooperating. I decided to do this with 4 weeks notice and instantly kicked myself from running once a week t... Tue, 23 Nov 2010 09:43:07 EST The Buckle Down Yup I’m buckling down. I have the pedal to the metal. I’m on board the motivation train.

I can’t think of any more cheesy metaphors :P

But all this to say I think I found my motivation this morning. It was hiding in my scale. I will admit I’m one of those people who weighs herself every morning. However you must know that I really don’t pay attention to what is says day to day. I know that it will go up and down day to day and week to week without fail and I accep... Thu, 18 Nov 2010 15:54:31 EST Trying to Stay Positive So I haven’t posted a blog on here in some time. Partly because things haven’t been going so well and partly because I’ve been posting a regular food / recipe blog on my own else where. For a while I was double posting but I find it such a pain to load pictures onto Sparkpeople so I’ve just been posting on my blog.

If you’d like to check it out:

m

But anyway ....

Lately I’ve been feeling c... Mon, 15 Nov 2010 11:36:58 EST The Good, Bad and Ugly of Running in 3 Degree Weather Ok 1st off for my American friends... 3 degrees C. is 37 F.

I was feeling stubborn tonight. I wanted to work out but didn't know what to do. I hadn't packed my running gear to run at the gym at work and I wasn't battling traffic to go back. So I sat down. Well first I put on my workout gear and then sat down to read some fitness blogs.

Today must have been the perfect storm for me to run in cold weather.

I've been wanting to run but have been nursing a cold... Fri, 5 Nov 2010 18:58:03 EST Fitness Aspirations So as many of you know I’ve been sick for the past 2 weeks (gah!). I find it so frustrating, especially since I’m never sick this long. Prior to falling ill I was having a killer month for fitness… to the point that even though I’ve been sick I’ve still worked out more days than not for the month. I do love working out and I always feel better when I have fitness in my life. So on top of being sick, I am frustrated that I haven’t been able get out my frustrations through working out.
... Sat, 30 Oct 2010 21:25:03 EST Measurments Update...HOLY CRAP! So today I did my measurements. I only do them once a month so I can notice a change and I measure the following things:

Neck
Upper Arm
Forearm
Chest
Under Chest (ie bra size)
Waist
Hips
Thigh
Calf

Well I was recording them in SP and thought I'd look at where I started many moons ago.

This is something I should look at more often... it made me feel better about my slow and steady wins the race progress. Many of them have been good…some of them not so much.

Getting some of my career woes solved has been one of the best things to happen… although it has shown me that my career stagnation wasn’t the only thing I wasn’t happy with in my life.

I wasn’t happy with me.

That’s r... Thu, 14 Oct 2010 11:17:13 EST How do you feel about cosmetic surgery post-weight loss?? A few months ago I was talking with a friend about my weight loss journey… most specifically I was talking about one of the negative side effects of my weight loss…skin.

This is the little thorn in my side. I try hard not to define myself by looks but this little devil has been making it hard to focus on all the positive changes to my body. This is something I thought about from the very beginning and even talked with my Doctor about it. My Doc felt that there was a good chanc... Tue, 12 Oct 2010 16:01:45 EST A quiet week with some realizations This has been a quiet week. A quiet week at the end of about 4-5 months of absolute insanity. This week ROCKED!!!

I have been house guest free, I was in town this weekend and free to do whatever with whom ever and even had time to clean my house, indulge in some lengthy workouts and cooks some super yummy meals.

Every night this week I have either done something low key or nothing at all! WOW this is cool So about a year ago I was toying with the idea of getting a Micoach. Its a running / cycling tool from Adidas. I heard about it from the Running Room and they were saying it was supposed to be like the Nike Pulse tool that fits in your shoe but better.

Well, due to $ tightness I didn't get it.

Last night while updating my blackberry I came across the free Micoach app for blackberry / iphone and mobile phones. Sat, 2 Oct 2010 15:44:05 EST Great run and Tiny Cookies I usually try to have a little snack before a run after work but don't always have time...especially if I run at the gym at work. Today I tried to run at work since it was dark and dreary but the odds were against me.

First I forgot my water bottle...but ok, I can run without water I do all the time when I run outdoors.

Then as I was getting changed I realized I forgot to pack socks. Thu, 23 Sep 2010 18:27:06 EST Lemon Pepper Penne Epiphany This is a little delayed but I hadn’t had time to post on Tuesday night. Tuesday I made one of my classic “wtf” type of dinners where I just threw some favourites together.

I was really craving my lemon pepper pasta and needed some protein and veg to go with it. I wanted to put some shredded zucchini in it but alas, there was none in the house and it was too late and I was too hungry to go to the store.

So here’s what ended up on my plate:

Lemon pepper penne... Thu, 16 Sep 2010 10:04:09 EST What I’ve learned from Eating by Intuition Eating by intuition – aka not tracking my food.

Well I’m happy to report that my 2 week experiment is going pretty well. I’ve been keeping a close eye on the scale to make sure I wasn’t making any errors in judgement and things are status quo. I will admit that after eating a few meals out this weekend I had gained 2 lbs, but as suspected, it was just the “too much sodium woes” and after a couple days of normal eating those lbs have hit the road.

I have stayed pretty... Wed, 15 Sep 2010 16:02:00 EST Monday Blues and Taco Salad Ok, so today kinda sucked.

I had a uber hard time getting out of bed as it was cold in my room and rainy outside and all I wanted to do was burrow down in the duvet. Then I got to was crazy...all day...CRAZY!

By the end of the day I had developed a pretty bad migraine, the kind where my teeth are aching and all the sounds around me made me want to bang my head against my desk.

I was also pretty sore from last night's strength training. A couple wee... Mon, 13 Sep 2010 20:39:07 EST Parental Frustrations! It’s quite possible that me changing my lifestyle to eat healthy and lose weight is taking a serious toll on my relationship with my parents.

My dad is super supportive. He used to weight about 340 lbs until his doctor told him he was heading to an early grave and over the course of 8 years he got down to 190-200 lbs. He also had a heart attack about 2 years ago and they also found that his one kidney had not been working in years and he has a cancerous tumor on his kidney 3x t... Sun, 12 Sep 2010 12:33:43 EST Dating on a Diet and a pic of my new yoga gear I didn’t think about this when I started eating healthy and exercising 17 months ago. Actually, the only thought I had was that it could only help. As I lost weight not only would I be more confident but that could only help me be more attractive right?

Well at this point diet and exercise have become such a part of my life that sometimes they get in the way and I’m not sure if I have a problem with that (which might be a bad sign honestly).

I’ve always had a bit of a... Thu, 9 Sep 2010 22:17:50 EST Intuitive eating cont and new running swag! I’m happy to report that my September experiment into intuitive eating (aka not having to track my calories to know that I’m eating properly) has been getting easier. As you may have read on my blog from Friday (Sept 3rd) I was struggling and had given in to some “woohoo I don’t have to write this down” temptation. Mind you I still felt obligated to blog my indiscretion (chocolate covered raisins for dinner!) so I guess that’s still accountability. But I’m happy to report the rest of the w... Wed, 8 Sep 2010 10:32:13 EST Not Tracking Calories...Day 2 Ok so I'll be honest... I'm not sure how this is going.

Also I'm exhausted right now and am partially writing this to stay awake. I have guests driving in from out of town and it looks like they won't be here until 12:30 am *note it is 10:45 as I write this and I'm barely able to focus on the screen I'm so f-ing tired... ! Perhaps my fatigue is effecting my (personal BS detector) positive outlook.

But anyway...about the weight loss journey...

I decided to stop... Fri, 3 Sep 2010 23:03:42 EST Turkey Burgers - from scratch! with pics! Making yummy sandwich type meals are probably one of my favourite things. They are tasty and easy on the stomach while allowing me to get carbs, protein and veggies all in one hand-held package.

A couple months ago (probably like 10-12 actually) I tried my hand at turkey burgers from scratch. I've been dying to try them again because there were a lot of changes I wanted to make and tonight was the night. I think they turned out really good...maybe a little thin but its a work in... Thu, 2 Sep 2010 20:43:50 EST Eating by intuition…day 1 So far so good.

It’s a strange feeling so far. My routine changed a little. Usually when I get to work I eat my breakfast while filling out what I packed for the day on the nutrition tracker and seeing what’s going on in Sparkville.

This morning I started working right away because I didn’t have the urgency to get on spark…then I realized I was getting hungry and had my yogurt and granola and saw what everyone else in sparkland was up to.

I started thinkin... Thu, 2 Sep 2010 13:35:27 EST Is September 2010 the Month I try Something New?? Well its officially September and I’ve been thinking about my progress, goals and the possibility of doing things differently.

Some thoughts…

I’m debating 2 strategies…either minimizing tracking my food but continuing to weigh myself daily as a strategy for ensuring nothing goes crazy OR continuing to track my food daily but only weighing in once a week or bi-weekly. I’ve been tracking my food daily since March of 2009…that’s right…it’s a long time. At this point on ... Wed, 1 Sep 2010 15:33:28 EST OMG Sandwich! Ok…I made the best sandwich yesterday! It could have been that I was out until 8:30pm and when I got home I was sooo hungry…it also could have been that I was starving all day and this was a good hearty sandwich…but I personally feel it had more to do with my sandwich making genius :D A friend of mine who is staying with me said “wow that looks really good…you just threw that together?” And I told her it was easy when I’d been day dreaming about a sandwich for about 3 hours!

Here’s... Tue, 31 Aug 2010 10:02:08 EST Bitter Bus... Party of 1? Ok here’s an admission…I’ve been feeling crappy lately. About a week and a half ago I was feeling really bummed and I tried really hard to chalk it up to the upcoming TOM and hormones…but alas that’s long gone and I’m feeling crappy lately. I think I’m just feeling a little out of sorts. I’m in a new city and not feeling particularly grounded. I have a good home and some good friends in the city but it’s not the same. When I was living in London I’ve been there for 5 years and had establ... Tue, 24 Aug 2010 12:01:13 EST Sunday Morning Crepes Oh the sweet joy that is Sunday mornings! My favourite thing to do on the weekends is to make a great breakfast that feels decadent. Were during the week my breaky is usually a good 300 cals... on the weekend I often hit 500 cals because I sleep in and eat a little later so have a lighter lunch or skip my am snack. I think its good to keep my metabolism on its toes so it doesn't ALWAYS know when the food is coming :)

So this Sunday I made Crepes. Its a super easy recipe and Sunday ... Tue, 24 Aug 2010 00:01:01 EST Purchased some motivation at Chapters - with Pics Hey everyone,

So if you follow my blog you'll know that I've been trying a lot of new things to keep my motivation up these days and break through the plateau.

I'm doing the following:

- trying new strength exercises
- doing the ones I hate (because they're plank) to challenge my body
- focusing on the end goal
- keeping a regular food blog (about eating with IBS and being Dairy free both while on a diet)

alifewith... Sun, 22 Aug 2010 14:51:28 EST Need Feedback…How do you feel about Personal Training? This is something I’ve been thinking about lately. I was watching some of my new favourite weight loss shows last night (I find them so motivating that I started doing squats behind my couch at 10:30pm even though I’d already for strength training earlier that night).

I’ve been in pretty much a plateau for about 3-4 months now. I’m being good and working hard but the lbs are coming off very very slowly. I know I should be and am happy that they’re moving at all…but still. I kno... Fri, 20 Aug 2010 09:54:15 EST A little before and after (pics) So on the last long weekend I was at a bbq with some friends and my friend just posted some pictures on Facebook...and for the first time EVER I didn't hate any of them! There is even one (which I will include below) that is really not the most flattering angle for anyone (which I remember thinking as she took it) and still I don't mind! So I thought I'd share it with another before pic I found on Facebook...not the worst photo out there of me but I'm not quite ready to share the worse one ... Tue, 10 Aug 2010 22:45:53 EST The power-talk gossip-walk lunch LOL…I thought of that title and couldn’t NOT blog.

Today at lunch I decided I wanted to chat with one of my girlfriends who I hadn’t talked to much lately and felt the need to vent to her and catch up on the boy news (she always has good boy news). So over lunch I took a bit of a power walk in the sun while chatting on the phone with my girlfriend! It was so much fun, like having here right there with me on the walk. I usually take my lunch walk as the one time I workout without ... Mon, 9 Aug 2010 13:09:08 EST A rock through my window and a couple too many drinks - TGIF? Last night I was supposed to go out to a Latin club for some killer sangria … however my plans were delayed because while parked downtown in front of a friends house someone through a rock through my passenger window to steal my lunch bag (which I can only assume they thought was a purse). Am I upset that I had to have my window replaced to the tune of $260? Hell yes! Is there a part of me that thinks its funny that some thief / juvenile delinquent went to the trouble of getting a rock, th... Sat, 7 Aug 2010 18:36:59 EST Binge it a girl thing?? On the weekend I made the drive back to Ottawa with a dear friend of mine…who also happens to be a boy and therefore has a different perspective on the whole eating thing from me. He was telling me earlier in the weekend that when he was growing up his mom never kept any food he liked in the house (ie sweets) and he always thought it was because he was a little chunky and his mom is a very health conscious woman. He told me that he only realized as an adult it was because if those types of ... Wed, 4 Aug 2010 16:27:20 EST The Mega Salad!! This time with a Picture!! I can't take credit for the Mega Salad at all! Thu, 29 Jul 2010 19:29:38 EST My Scale is not cooperating! Ok so I set a new goal for myself a couple weeks ago…kick my own butt and aim for losing 1 lb a week until Jan 30th (my 29th B-day…where if I lose 1 lb a week I will hit my 100 for my bday).

Well for the first couple weeks I was right on track. I started this goal at 215 lbs (5 of those being from the purchase of a new scale…eventually I’ll get over that and stop clarifying my weight :P). My last tracked weight was 212 (right on schedule) and the scale had said 211 the last tim... Thu, 29 Jul 2010 13:04:19 EST Winter Coat – YES I know its July Last night I was doing some more unpacking. I’m at that stage now where I have everything I need out so now its all about the little things I don’t really want to unpack right now :P Last night I got to my winter coat. When I bought it in the fall it was rather exciting…It was one of the first things I legitimately bought in a non-plus-size store. By legitimate I mean:

- It has no give, stretch, nylon, spandex etc etc in it. It is wool with a satin liner and if it fits it fits... Fri, 23 Jul 2010 11:05:09 EST
