While at conference some of us took a tour of the Schweitzer Hospital. It continues to function today but the old buildings are now a museum. I remember studying Albert Schweitzer in grade school but I kept getting him mixed up with David Livingston. Well, since 1977 when I moved to Africa and first got to tour the Schweitzer Hospital, I will not get them mixed up again!
Here are a few photos:

Dr. Schweitzer's home plus nurses' dining hall(now a museum), piano (no I was not t... Tue, 19 Aug 2014 15:44:08 EST Blowout! On my way to the conference I just attended my car had a blowout! I was able to control the car ok. I can no longer bend my knee enough to change a tire. Friends started to help to change the tire but those tires are SO heavy so everyone was glad when a man in a passing car stopped and did the actual tire change. We drove about a half hour to a town where I could buy a new tire before we headed on our way.

<BR... Mon, 18 Aug 2014 00:12:45 EST Passing a MILESTONE! I did lose a pound this week but it's one of those that just keeps coming back and going away. I do plan for losing more weight this week though.

So where is my progress being made? In getting ready for my August 2nd garage sale. It will actually not be held in the garage but in my house, in two rooms. I had a teenager here today to help me. Sat, 5 Jul 2014 10:14:46 EST Trip PHOTOS + Today's Positives! Thursday til Saturday I took a trip to a town about two hours from where I work at the Hospital. A family went with me. We had a good time. I had been to this town many times but they had never been there so I showed them around. That way they can go back again when they need a break, and they can tell others where to stay, where to eat out, about the market, etc. We drove out to a small lake that was close to town too. The Hotel where we stayed was named after "Blue Lake", a lake that was ve... Sun, 29 Jun 2014 03:41:34 EST Moving Day is Coming! My neighbor (also a Sparkperson) and I sometimes put together jigsaw puzzles on my dining room table. When (not if) I have company over for a meal I first put a plastic table cloth on the table, then a cloth one. My company do not even know that I have a puzzle hiding underneath. This past week of my vacation we finished this puzzle that had been "in hiding". Putting together puzzles is supposed to be good for the br... Mon, 23 Jun 2014 14:01:17 EST Baby Shower! Mon, 16 Jun 2014 02:29:43 EST 10 Year Ovarian Cancer Survivor! Ten years ago today, June 15, I had a total hysterectomy. When the laboratory report came back it showed that I had a rare type of OVARIAN CANCER called Granulosa Thecoma. There were two types of cancer mixed together. Slow growing cancer that produces the hormone Estrogen so I was actually having symptoms. Most women with ovarian cancer do not have symptoms so the cancer is found in a late stage. Since I DID have symptoms, my cancer was found in the 1st Stage. After surgery I did not have to... Sun, 15 Jun 2014 11:25:26 EST A Divided Class! Yep, these past weeks the Nursing Class has been divided in two for Bible Studies. Each Friday half of the class was with professor Terry and half with me. My group is the second photo. This past month it was a joy for me to study verses in Philippians. All classes, including our Bible Studies, are over now for the summer. Students have final exams this week.

<img src=" Mon, 9 Jun 2014 23:01:33 EST Holiday Time and Summer Plans! I met Louise over 30 years ago in a distant village where I went once a month to encourage those in her Church. She was in my Bible Study for those years I visited there. As our hospital grew, Louise would come periodically to us to have a baby or get other care.

One time I had a piece of material that I took to a tailor for a dress. When I went to pick it up he proudly handed me Two DRESSES of different models. Since there had been more material than he needed for the dress that ... Fri, 6 Jun 2014 16:37:10 EST On Antibiotics! This afternoon I gave a final exam in Nutrition class. It was the first of two exams, the other one being next week. I decided to give two final exams so that they would be able to restudy after having done the first. I have not yet checked out their work to know if everyone passed.

I've developed a small boil under my left arm so yesterday I was started on an Antibiotic. About ten days ago I had some funny looking spots that looked like infected bug bites but they went away fine..... Tue, 3 Jun 2014 13:59:43 EST Sewing in a Palaver house! In my last blog I showed two nursing students weighing babies in a village scene. They did that in a "palaver house". That is hangar built with the purpose of people gathering to chat or to discuss "issues". There are palaver houses scattered throughout the village but usually always near where the chiefs live.

While the Nursing students were weighing babies a man was also sewing a dress. He had wired up electricity to his palaver house as a makeshift tailor's shop. I am sure it w... Mon, 2 Jun 2014 12:34:25 EST Weighing with a Meat Scale? Yesterday I accompanied the Student Nurses to a village for their Public Health class. There are 16 students and I drove eight of them to the far end of the village. They were divided in groups of two. It was my turn to observe Larissa and Albert and their teaching for the day was that of weighing babies and preschoolers and then giving a nutrition lesson to the adults who were there. They had prepared food which they used to demonstrate how to make a nutritious puree for babies then gave out... Fri, 30 May 2014 12:45:45 EST Cooking over an Open Fire! How are you at cooking over an open fire? Take the fire here, put a couple of big rocks around it close enough together to hold your big pot and there you have it. I've never tried but I'm sure that I would not be a good cook and likely would have a problem keeping the fire going but these women here in Africa where I live fix some great meals by using only an open fire!!

Today's Positives:
1. I hav... Wed, 28 May 2014 09:07:59 EST More Nursing Students in Photo! Here are a few photos that I took this Thursday during the Nursing School trip to the village for Health Teaching. Fri, 23 May 2014 00:30:33 EST Quickie with most recent photo! Our Internet here at the hospital and our homes has been terrible for the past few days. It was mostly OFF today from early morning until a few minutes ago so here I am trying to do a blog entry and do a bit of Sparking!
Here is my most recent photo taken on Thursday afternoon when I helped drive our Nursing Students to the village so that they could do some Public Health teaching. I'll blog with more photos another time, when I know the Internet will be around for awhile.

<i... Sat, 17 May 2014 13:28:20 EST Evaluating how to Prioritize my Time! With only about six months left in Africa before moving back to Omaha, NE for eventual retirement, I am now evaluating how to prioritize the time I have left. One thing I must do is cut back on the time I am on SparkPeople. I do plan to continue to be here, and to blog but I need to spend less time Sparking. I just stepped down from leading the SparkOMAHA team, even though I have enjoyed helping out the team. I just need to set my priorities so I can get everything done that I need to do to m... I have visited most of the students in their hospital departments. I will finish a bit later. For now I am in the AM Radio Station room doing some program changes. First a song. Now Scripture. Then a couple of songs before putting on a pre programmed Hospital Radio cd. That cd goes about 5 hours and then starts over. It has a variety of short programs on Bible, health, music, etc. It is in French and comes from Trans World Radio out of Cote d'Ivoire. The Hospital Radio has bee... Fri, 2 May 2014 04:42:29 EST New Restaurant in Town! Although I am in a village of about 10,000 people, there are hardly any restaurants and definitely no familiar chain restaurants. The ones that are here are usually run by one or two people. About a week ago, I got invited to a new restaurant in town. It is run by a woman from the local church plus another woman who she hired to help. Although the menu did mention chicken, when asked what was available, it was fish done about three ways. I had a whole fish cooked with a tomato sauce and on to... Tue, 29 Apr 2014 14:40:30 EST Photo of the JUNGLE and MORE! I often say that I live on the Equator in the jungle but this photo will give you a better view of my house. It is the long white duplex next to the brick home, overlooking a river leading the the waterfall. I can hear the water rushing over the waterfall from my home and sometimes I have to really listen carefully to know if it is RAIN I hear or the WATERFALL. Rain can really be loud in the "tin" roof of my home, even though the attic mutes it. I have no glass in my windows, just screens, wo... Mon, 21 Apr 2014 04:20:51 EST He is ALIVE! JESUS is ALIVE. Too Funny!!!

Today's Positive:
1. It's too early to be up (before 4am) and I'm going back to bed.
2. So why would I be staying away from the Nursing School? I've still been going down to the hospital to check on half of the students who continue to work, even though the other half are on vacation. BUT, the nursing school itself is getting a make over. It has had bats living in the attic for YEARS so this week all the ceilings are coming down and new ceilings going up. The holes in the attic screens were patched so the bats can't get back in. I'm allergic to bat dirt so I'm staying clear. I... Tue, 15 Apr 2014 06:51:20 EST Past and Present Photo! I have been sorting through all my digital photos. Here's one that I scanned in from an old photo. It is my High School Graduation photo which was taken probably in the fall of 1966. Graduation was in 1967.

I don't look like that any more but then again, that photo was taken nearly 48 years ago! Here is one of me taken this week. Years ago I was on a Walking with Leslie Sansone team but in recent years I have not been walking inside. Of course I've been a nurse. But I have also taught, done bookkeeping, driven my car as an ambulance, as a hearse, been in charge of supplies, ordered the drugs for the hospital, etc. I can not list all that I have done over the years, but I am now in the mode to get rid of the hats I have recently had. One recent hat that has come off is that of administrator of the hospital website. The hospital website administration... Thu, 20 Mar 2014 00:26:11 EST Starting Over!
