UPDATE: on a minor surgery that I had this morning. An oral surgeon took off a very small growth from my tongue and another one from my soft palate. I have one or two small stitches on the tongue. The Dr. cauterized the little hole which was the size of a pea that was left in my palate. He felt I might bleed from either the tongue or palate because he wanted me to stay on the Aspirin that I normally take daily. He said the bleeding would only last the first 24 hours. I have "hay fever" and asthma and right now I have either both or a cold. Sometimes I can not tell the difference. With Spring in the air though, I think my runny, stuffy nose and my cough are related to allergies. My nose is stuffed and I have been unable to use my CPAP for very long tonight as I am a nose breather. I do have my asthma medicine along with me on this trip.... but that has not stopped my symptoms, just maybe slowed them down.

527

I'm really ... CPAP IS "CONTINUOUS POSITIVE AIRWAY PRESSURE". I wear a mask and humidified air is blown into the mask. I breath in this forced air through my nose and it has enough pressure to make sure that my airway stays open. It had been closing off or partially closing off. Some people use a nose mask but I do better with a full mask, even though I do not generally mouth breath.

During the sleep test I had 24-25 times EVERY HOUR w... A photo was taken of the area and it had not changed from last month. The dentist thinks it might be medicine induced. I may have had a cut or something that got inflamed by my Asthma spray. It does not look like any classic "disease". I have an appointment for another cleaning in April. If it gets larger before then, I need to contact her. If it doesn't disappear before then, she will then... Tue, 17 Feb 2015 05:12:48 EST Back to the Dentist!

Last month when I was at the dentist a bump/sore was found on the roof of my mouth. Omaha was part of this weekend snowstorm that went towards New England. We had 5-8 inches. I'm not sure how many in my neighborhood. Here is a photo taken Saturday from my balcony and another one taken Sunday. Tue, 3 Feb 2015 16:17:06 EST Apnea verses Hypopnea! Yesterday I received a phone call from my Doctor's office with some information from the Sleep Study that I took last week. I'm waiting for the whole report to be mailed to me but this is what I did learn. I only had 5 periods of apnea during the night. BUT I had 91 periods of Hypopnea during the night.

Here is the difference that I have found:

OBSTRUCTIVE APNEA (OA)= cessation of airflow for 10 seconds or greater.
HYPOPNEA = more than 50% decrease in airflow (shal... Sat, 31 Jan 2015 19:46:14 EST No Cancer! On Friday I had a breast biopsy done at the Radiology department. I was pretty sure I had sleep apnea and the test confirmed that I do. My oxygen level dropped down quite a lot and I was put on a CPAP machine for the rest of the night. Now I need to wait until my doctor calls to tell me that I "flunked" my sleep study and need to sleep with CPAP.

Today I had a biopsy which followed last week's mammogram and ultrasound. It was done in the radiology (Xray) department and was not too uncomfortable. Now I need to ... Fri, 23 Jan 2015 18:41:22 EST Weather! I'm not a fan of winter. I lived on the equator in Africa for over 37 years but I am now in Omaha, NE for retirement. When I am in the States for winter I prefer cold over snow so this winter has been a good one. It has not snowed more than an inch or less at a time and right now the snow is gone and temperature unusually high for January. YES!!!!

Today's Positives:
1. Today the weather is supposed to be in the 50s F.
2. A friend is coming from Lincoln to spend the day. W... Mon, 19 Jan 2015 05:40:22 EST Dr. Checkups! Since I was overseas for the past two years, I'm having lots of Dr. Checkups now. This week I had a bone scan, a thyroid scan (for my goiter) and a mammogram.

My bone scan indicated that I have Osteopenia (weak bones) rather than Osteoporosis (weaker bones) so that is GOOD. In 2009 I had Osteoporosis. Then in December 2011 it had improved to Osteopenia. BUT in 2012 I broke my left knee and wrist which would have thrown my bones into Osteoporosis again. I'm glad that the past two ye... Fri, 16 Jan 2015 19:55:28 EST Good Day! Today was good. Most of my morning was taken up with checkups at the hospital: mammogram, dexascan of my bones and scan of my goiter. All exams that have been done before but just doing a "checkup".
After the trip to the hospital I went to Big Lots to buy a few things, to lunch, to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription and home. This evening I worked in my kitchen, did office type stuff and watched some TV.
Today was good.

Today's Positives:
1. All three of my test... Mon, 12 Jan 2015 23:14:35 EST Five plus Two = Seven! Yesterday I had my 507 plus 504 SparkVersary!

I joined SparkPeople on January 7, 2008. That's the reason for my SparkName, Carolyn0107.

I have learned a lot through SparkPeople and I've made lots of SparkFriends. BUT, I weigh more now than when I started to Spark. This year, 2015, I plan to change that... and actually lose weight!!

Today's Positives:
1. I finally got my couch delivered to my home from storage on Tuesday. Here is ... Thu, 8 Jan 2015 19:44:23 EST Good News! Yesterday morning I went to my Doctor for a routine physical. Someone from the office called today to say that my blood work was all normal. YES!!! No diabetes, nor high cholesterol, etc.!!! What good news.

Next Monday I have a Mammogram, a Dexa-scan of my bones and a scan of my thyroid (goiter). Then I should be all checked out for now.

The luncheon for Seniors I was supposed to speak at today was canceled because of cold weather. Some of the Srs had started to cancel s... Tue, 6 Jan 2015 17:05:51 EST 15% in 2015! Can you believe I joined such a challenge? Drop 15% in 2015! Well, I did. I'm not making that my resolution but at least I'll be accountable to others on the challenge. I weighed 266 yesterday, having dropped 4 pounds since I arrived in the States!! Mind you, it's a different scale. 15% of 266 pounds is 39.9 pounds or I'll call it 40 pounds. 266 pounds minus 40 pounds is 226 pounds. Since joining SparkPeople I have had my goal at losing 10% of my weight but I have not seriously tried to do so... Sun, 4 Jan 2015 06:51:38 EST "Settling In" but items missing! I finally moved most of the way into my new apartment. The process started Monday and ended Wednesday. BUT it's not ended. I still have a few things at Mom's house that I will get on Monday. Two items that are missing so far are hangars and my pots and pans. I don't think they are at Mom's so that is still a mystery for me. I have a microwave and an electric "grill" so I'm doing ok but I'm still on the search of my pots and pans. I'll have to buy some hangars.

<img src="http://pho... Fri, 2 Jan 2015 16:23:18 EST Changes! Change seems to be my theme... as I transition from living in Africa to living in the States.

I had a man with a truck who was going to help with his truck plus get some college students to help move my stuff to my apartment on Tuesday but now I just heard that he had a death in his wife's family and that the funeral is on Tuesday. I have his telephone number so will try to get hold of him to figure out another day, or I'll find the help of others to move my stuff. My bed and recl... Sun, 28 Dec 2014 04:26:05 EST Phone Camera Use.... Ugh I sold my camera to someone in Africa before I moved back to the States. The only camera that I have now is on my phone. I have not been happy with the photos I've taken this month so I do plan to buy a camera... soon! Here is one of me on Christmas Eve. I think it adds many pounds to what I have. I should have stood for the photo instead of sat down.

Does anyone use their phone camera as their main ca... Fri, 26 Dec 2014 09:06:31 EST Merry Christmas to my SparkFriends! Tomorrow is Christmas EVE and then it will be Christmas. I did not have many presents to buy this year and all is bought. I was told I did not need to bring anything but I do have a hostess gift to give. Christmas Day I will spend with my StepMother. We are going out to a restaurant for dinner. I h... Tue, 23 Dec 2014 18:26:49 EST My Knee Bend! Many of you followed my blog when I broke my knee back in 2012. My left knee was broken in March 2012, repaired and then needed a replacement in June 2012. I had what was considered a "catastrophic" injury since my artery in my knee also tore and I needed to have a cardiovascular surgeon take a vein, clean it out, turn it upside down and sew it in to replace the torn artery.

In December of that year I returned to Africa where I had worked since 1977. Three weeks ago I returned to ... Sun, 21 Dec 2014 05:21:42 EST I Found it AGAIN! On December 6th I wrote that I had found an apartment. This week I learned that the apartment was no longer available. Long story. Anyway, yesterday I went out looking at apartments and I found one again. This time I paid down a deposit and decided not to pick up the key until December 29th, after Christmas. No one can help me move before Christmas anyway. I'm so glad that decision is made.

Today there is a small amount of snow on the ground. I think not more than an inch. I will b... Thu, 18 Dec 2014 04:36:26 EST I Lost It! It's a long story but I lost the apartment that I was trying to get into so now I'm again out looking for an apartment. Not fun.

I don't like the snow and ice when I am a "fall risk". I have osteoporosis and with my bad leg, an orthopedic surgeon told me to "never fall". It's dry out today but perhaps some snow will come tonight. I need to go out tomorrow morning.

Today's Positives:
1. I have a home to stay in until I find my apartment.
2. My new car is fun to... Wed, 17 Dec 2014 08:28:12 EST I Got It! The TOPS members were glad to see me after a two year absence. I was pleased that my weight at TOPS was the same as it had been weeks ago at my home in Africa. I had not weighed in and had not paid much attention to what I was eating but now I know that I did not gain weight! I've been attending this same TOPS club every time I'm in the States since 2001. After the TOPS meeting some of us went out to eat.

After TOPS I went to Nebraska Furniture Mart, the largest Funiture store in ... Thu, 11 Dec 2014 21:06:58 EST Complications! I found out the apartment that I want will take much more time to get the financial paperwork done so I won't be able to move right in.
I called the Dr. nurse to have a prescription sent to one of the pharmacies for me and she sent it to the wrong one.
Otherwise.......

My computer which was at the Geeks, is back and repaired. I started an online search months ago but I found it this week! Yes, I found a two bedroom apartment to rent. I moved back to the States on Saturday. This time it is a permanent move as I will be officially retiring next summer. I will not be returning to work in Africa. Yesterday I started all the paperwork for living in an apartment complex which is for those who are ages 55+. I do not know when the paperwork process will end and the day I will receive the key but I imagine that it will be ... Sat, 6 Dec 2014 02:53:54 EST I made it! Yes, I made it to Omaha on Saturday. BUT Friday before I flew I checked on my tickets online but they were not there. It took a couple of hours and phone calls before Air France reissued my three tickets from Africa through Paris, to Atlanta and then on to Omaha. My flights went well.

Since arriving in Omaha I have been busy with our family Thanksgiving meal on Sunday, a church luncheon on Tuesday, looking for an apartment, a car and a phone. I finally did buy a phone yesterday and... Thu, 4 Dec 2014 17:47:47 EST My First Flying Experience!
