CAROLJ35's SparkPeople Blog CAROLJ35's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Reflection on Exercise No, I am not addicted to exercise. Sometimes I wish I were.
My favorite exercise is water aerobics and I really enjoy it when done with a group as when I am in Florida for the winter. In NC I use my son's pool in our backyard as long as the weather is conducive.
Our DIL put a new recumbent bike in our great room several years ago and I really enjoy riding it, but have to be careful as sometimes it aggravates the arthritis in my hip.
The same thing happens when walking. In FL... Sat, 12 Sep 2015 21:34:43 EST 1460 = 4 years Just happened to look at the days I have spun the wheel and thought 1460 was a neat number and when I checked it out, it was exactly 4 years. I have been on SP since 2008, lost 50 lbs. in 14 months, maintained very well until the past year when I re-gained about 13 lbs. because I just kind of had a "pity party". I'd get back down close to goal, then give up.
But now I have declared an "all-out war" to conquer these lbs. once again.
Sweets are my weakness so I have sworn off them ... Sun, 23 Aug 2015 08:12:46 EST SIX DAYS TO GO!!! In six days I will complete my second 100 Days with No Sweets!!!
Has it been difficult over the holidays?
No, not really.
Was I ever tempted to give in and eat some goodies?
Sure, I was tempted, especially when I made chocolate coated candies and some coconut macaroons which I hadn't made in 40 or more years.
Or how about when I served my homemade "Key Lime Pie"?
But I never even licked my finger!
What are the advantages?
I truly enjoyed the flavors o... Thu, 25 Dec 2014 21:20:49 EST CAN'T BELIEVE TODAY MARKS 100 DAYS 100 days ago I joined a Spark Team called 100 DAYS TO A NEW YOU. I had gotten to the place where I wanted too many sweets and my weight had crept up from maintenance some 15 lbs. so I decided to take the challenge of 100 days with NO SWEETS.
Someone befriended me and that was encouragement as they said it would get easier as time went on, and they were right!
You see, I love to cook and bake, especially for my three grandchildren who have to have gluten free foods. I never eat t... Sat, 6 Sep 2014 08:19:28 EST Our Wacky Red Male Cardinal He is beautiful!
He is bright red!
He is persistent!
He is wacky!!!
For 3 months this beautiful red cardinal has flown into our windows with all of his strength!
Not once a day! Not twice a day! But countless times a day!
Not one window! Not two windows! But almost every window in the house!
Not one house, but at least two as he goes next door to our son's and repeats his antics!
He wakens me at 6:15 as his beak hits windows numerous times!
Thi... Sun, 22 Jun 2014 21:51:26 EST MY APOLOGIES TO DR. OZ!!! Back in February I wrote a blog stating I had lost all respect for Dr. Oz because he was promoting this weight loss product which we all know is fake.
Well, today on the Noon News I heard that Dr. Oz was going to Washington this afternoon to do something about these companies who fictitiously use someone's name saying they endorse that program.
He never endorsed that weight loss product and wants to get back at the companies who put his name to their products.
I am glad to he... Tue, 17 Jun 2014 15:36:11 EST FINALLY!!! Finally got in a full hour of water aerobics - and I am very tired tonight. Going to bed early.
Grandson graduates tomorrow evening and service starts at 8 PM. Guess I'd better take a nap or I will never stay awake for it.
Hope I have time for pool again as the water if finally warm and beautiful.
Have an enjoyable Sunday! Sat, 7 Jun 2014 21:16:21 EST Day 5 / NO Sweets Did it! Only 95 more to go!!!
May have been a tad easier today, but find I am eating good solid food and ending at high end of calorie count. So now I will work on NO Sweets along with lighter snacks.

PS Got to talk to sister tonight and was good to hear her voice. She has a long way to go but sounded very upbeat! Tue, 3 Jun 2014 22:28:59 EST Days 3 & 4 Not really easy, but I have now completed two more days with NO sweets.

And to this I must add, my younger sister came through very serious surgery at Cleveland Clinic today, but there is a rough road ahead. She has a great faith and we are all praying for her. If you care to, please add Kathy to your prayer list. Mon, 2 Jun 2014 20:35:53 EST Days 1 & 2 Joined the 100 Day Team to help with my battle of eating sweets.
And I have just completed the first two days! Yay for me!
Baked for grandkids this morning, then baked for DH. Never even licked my fingers!

521 521 521 521 521 Sat, 31 May 2014 17:32:08 EST Why I Have Lost All Respect for Dr. Oz As I am trying to type this blog, up popped two pages of ads for Garcinia Cambogia. I am so sick of seeing those ads that don't even have an x for me to delete them. I have to go back to my ISP, bring up the page and get rid of it.
SPARK PEOPLE tells us there is no product out there to make us lose weight, yet Dr. Oz recommends this junk on our healthy website.
What is wrong with this picture??? Tue, 18 Feb 2014 20:07:35 EST DID YOU READ THIS MYTH? Recently I read this MYTH in the newspaper.
MYTH: The healthiest foods are fresh, not canned.
FACT: Canned or jarred foods can be more affordable sources of vitamins and minerals compared to their fresh or frozen counterparts, according to a 2012 study.
What's more, your body is better able to absorb some nutrients (like lycopene in tomatoes) after the cooking and canning process. Sat, 15 Feb 2014 14:23:26 EST WHAT KIND OF THINKER ARE YOU??? I read this in an office today and thought it was very good:

A NEGATIVE THINKER SEES A DIFFICULTY IN EVERY OPPORTUNITY

A POSITIVE THINKER SEES AN OPPORTUNITY IN EVERY DIFFICULTY

Sat, 7 Dec 2013 20:42:51 EST MY DELICIOUS "NO-SPAGHETTI" SPAGHETTI DINNER! It really tasted good to me and was loaded with vegetables!
I used Turkey Italian Sausages (very low fat) and split them lengthwise and browned them in a little EVOO. Took them out of pan and added chopped onion, garlic, multi-colored peppers, 2 zucchini, and all the herbs I use for spaghetti sauce with very little water and browned them well. Cut the sausages into bite sized pieces and put them back in pan with 1 1/2 qts. of Organic Tomato Basil Sauce I purchased at Aldi's. Simmered ... Tue, 8 Oct 2013 16:52:31 EST How did you make that oatmeal sooo good? That's what DH asked this morning after having it for two mornings.
I used 1 cup oatmeal, 2 1/2 cups water, 1 small McIntosh apple, chopped, little handful Craisins and a couple of shakes Cinnamon. Cooked until apples were soft. Then topped with brown sugar and milk. (I like chopped pecans, too.)
This made so much there was enough for 4 servings. (We reheat in microwave next day.)
I will put this into recipe calculator to get nutritional count.
Try it on a cool morning... Thu, 26 Sep 2013 11:01:57 EST ANYBODY WANT TO CRY WITH ME??? My husband asked me what was clunking in the washer this morning and I had no idea what it was and you can't stop these washers to find out.
When it was done, I found my 1 1/2 yr. old cell phone which one of our son's provides for us. I had left it in a pocket!!!
So we are headed to the Verizon store to look for a new one.
Please, either cry with me or for me!!! Mon, 26 Aug 2013 09:53:32 EST A Worthwhile Quote I just Received! "Today may there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others.
May you use the gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content with yourself just the way you are.
Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. Still no emails from Spark!!!
Still having busy days here on lake where weather is gorgeous!
Still preparing lots of good meals. Tonight is rib roast, mashed potatoes, cooked carrots, cooked cauliflower with cheese sauce, sauteed zucchini and summer squash with onions and red peppers. Probably a toss salad or maybe another fruit salad. Guess I had better cut the last very large pineapple, add strawberries and blueberries.
For breakfast we had cubed cantaloupe with blueberries. ... Sat, 6 Jul 2013 15:44:45 EST GLUTEN FREE BLUEBERRY MUFFINS This morning I made 24 gluten free blueberry muffins and by noon they were all gone along with 8 other blueberry muffins I make containing oatmeal. Guess everyone liked them! Thu, 4 Jul 2013 19:51:38 EST DINNER FOR 12 ON THE FOURTH!!! We didn't have the traditional grilled foods today. Had burgers yesterday and hot dogs another day and we have been eating "high off the hog". So today our dinner consisted of pulled pork (left from previous meal), a complete salad bar and baked potato bar. The many toppings could be used on either potatoes or salad. Also had some leftover macaroni salad and calico beans (4 kinds of beans with bacon and ground beef).
Lovely evening and some of us sat on deck since weather was great. ... Thu, 4 Jul 2013 19:48:11 EST Is It Fair??? Well, guess I lose my streak of at LEAST 5 fruits and veggies once again! Last time I lost it due to internet problems, now lose it because I can't eat anything today.
But I surely will boost the amount of liquids I have every day as I know I will have at least 20 before the day is over.
And I'M HUNGRY!!! No food from 8 PM Wed. until late Friday afternoon as I went ahead and took a 12:15 appointment just to get this colonoscopy over with!!!
But it is best to be cautious! So ... Thu, 30 May 2013 16:57:34 EST Do Our Kids Spoil Us??? For a change the sun shone most of the day. Took our friends to the Lake House (which belongs to son and wife) where we saw our new wing of house with a huge bedroom, very large bath, walk-in closet with one big area for computer table, etc. What a surprise!!! Gorgeous as it overlooks the lake!!! Our kids DO spoil us!!! Tue, 7 May 2013 22:02:08 EST A Day in The Life of A Senior!!! Got that exercise today! Both water aerobics and fruit picking as well as painting!
Started day at 6:30 AM and prepared food for Pot Luck Breakfast.
Chuck went to church breakfast with men while I went to Rainbow breakfast.
He stayed at church to paint in kitchen and I went in later to paint.
Went about noon to Eagle Lake (our friend's grove) to pick a couple of boxes of grapefruits, one for Gordon and one for our Chuckie.
Also went thru Bartow to get money from bank... Sat, 13 Apr 2013 21:43:58 EST EXERCISE ON A RAINY DAY!!! Usually we get a tropical rain shower here in FL, then the sun comes out and it is hot and humid. Not today! Rain started last evening with some through the night and when it started raining before 6 AM it never stopped all day. Just the kind of rain the drought areas need.
About 1 PM I suggested to DH that we go into the church and clean and it will be done for Sunday. (Many of us volunteer to do this in order to save the church money.) We swept and dusted for at least 2 1/2 hrs. U... Thu, 4 Apr 2013 19:45:10 EST How Easily Our Routine is Upset!!! I am supposed to be blogging about all the things I am doing to make improvements in my "healthy eating" and "healthy way of life" and I have not had very good days lately. Our son and wife flew in to see DH play ball and I have been cooking and getting ready for them. Then I try to eat while cooking breakfast and one of my goals is to sit down and eat my meals.
It is also very hard to measure all foods when there are guests at each meal.
Tonight I am very tired and must go to b... Fri, 8 Mar 2013 22:02:30 EST Always Room for Improvement!!! Who doesn't have room for improvement???
Seems as though we always have an area that needs worked on.
My blogs of the last three days still are where I need improvement:
1. Drinking water rather than tea.
2. Not tasting while cooking.
3. Measuring accurately everything I eat.

I will try to show improvement in these areas.
Wed, 6 Mar 2013 21:48:30 EST Join Me As I Measure More Accurately Tomorrow I will add one more detail to my program - one in which I have become lax - and that is measuring. I will say that in 5 years I have really learned to know how much to put on my plate. And I frequently do use the scales to measure foods.
But tomorrow I will measure more accurately and make that a regular part of this challenge!!!
Won't you join me??? Tue, 5 Mar 2013 21:02:35 EST Successful Today Appreciate all the encouraging words from Sparkers.
Today I was very successful with two issues. I ate nothing while standing, in other words, I did not taste while cooking.
I even dipped big strawberries in chocolate and made some other chocolate candies and did not lick my finger once and did not taste any of the goodies. Of course, I gave up sweets (my weakness) for Lent and I won't cheat on that!
Determination is what it takes!!! Mon, 4 Mar 2013 21:57:26 EST Tasting While Cooking I do real well on this for a while, then slip into my old, bad habit of tasting things while cooking. Every now and then I make a promise not to eat anything unless sitting and I have once again become very lax about that.
What will I do about it???
Starting tomorrow I will track the number of days I can go with eating nothing unless seated!!! Sun, 3 Mar 2013 23:11:40 EST WATER DRINKING - HARD FOR ME IN COLD WEATHER Yes, the weather has turned cold and windy in FL and I have a hard time drinking all water when it is cool. I always start the day with 1 1/2 cups hot water with freshly squeezed lemon juice.
I fill my 1 qt. drinking container but don't always drink it as plain water. I end up making it into decaf hot teas and I never go to bed without completing 8 cups of liquid, but not always plain water.
From what I have read, this is a very debatable thing as some experts say it should be wat... Sat, 2 Mar 2013 16:52:58 EST My Situation With SP After much thought I have decided I have to back off from SP. Next month will mark my 5th year on this site and I have rarely missed one day of posting.
But I get Spark messages for about 2 days, then none. Go to Start Page and it is marked to never send emails again. Correct it and maybe in a few days they start again.
SP says it is my ISP and my ISP blames Spark. I waste a lot of time with this and find it exasperating.
That is one problem! The other is my internet servi... Mon, 25 Feb 2013 20:15:44 EST A Busy Sunday
We had a very busy Sunday and ended up wearing our church clothes from 9 AM to 9 PM. First we had church, then a Southern Gospel Group sang at Rainbow (our resort) for one hour and they were followed by Carol Cline who sang gospel for the next hour.
We got home in time to answer one phone call and rush off to church to hear two sisters who sing religious songs. They write a lot of their own songs and were very good.
So we had a busy day.
Diet is going well, but scales are... Sun, 17 Feb 2013 22:07:14 EST MY VALENTINE TREAT Yes, I did treat myself with food this time. As I walked this morning I was wondering what I would have for breakfast and remembered I had been wanting waffles, a treat of once or twice a year. DH was off to exercise and then play tennis and I decided I was worth the extra work of making waffles, just for me.
So I had a 7 inch Belgian Waffle with a serving of Cool Whip and 1/2 cup fresh fruit salad on top and enjoyed my breakfast with a cup of tea.
HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO CAROL. ... Thu, 14 Feb 2013 22:24:16 EST MY HOME TOWN One team asked us to write about something going on in our home town, so I also wrote it as a blog.

Not a home town as we live in this resort for 6 winter months and hundreds of us call the people here "Our Rainbow Family" as the resort is named Rainbow. Kind of neat to have all the residents over 55 and have people who will do anything to help you out.
People play games and cards in the evening, tomorrow morning is a pancake breakfast along with a Blood Drive and Sunday after... Fri, 4 Jan 2013 20:58:02 EST CHRISTMAS SURPRISE!!! About 11 AM there was a rather loud knock on the sliding glass door. I dried my hands, went to door to see a man holding a lovely poinsettia in front of his face and the woman beside him. I thought that floral delivery guy knocked quite loudly. When I reached for the flower I saw our son from Ohio with his new wife standing there. What a shock!!!
They had driven all night, even through snowy southern OH where they saw many accidents!
They hid around wall and then totally surpris... Sat, 22 Dec 2012 15:20:42 EST No, We Didn't Get Depressed! My mother passed away unexpectedly one year on Dec. 23rd and we considered it blessed. It was the only day of the year when the obituaries were not on the front page. The cover page was religious with Silent Night and manger scenes and the kids were on their way home from college on a snowy night. The fireplace was burning, trees and house were lit for the holidays, the minister stopped by and it was a beautiful time. Hours were the day after Christmas and many friends thought it was too ... Mon, 26 Nov 2012 16:17:31 EST RENEWING MY VOWS!!! Yes, I am renewing my vows! Just arrived at winter home in FL on Friday afternoon, been busy unpacking, cleaning, and getting ready for the next 6 months. So I am renewing my vows in several areas:
Get 2 walks a day - or one 30 min. walk and ride recumbent bike for 30 min.
Weather permitting, get 60 min. of water aerobics.
Stick closely to food plan with lots of freggies.
Eat only when sitting - no sampling when cooking!
Resist foods I should avoid at parties and di... Sat, 27 Oct 2012 21:14:27 EST OMG!!! I Ate My Way Through The Columbus Convention Center!!! Gordon Foods Company had their big food show in Columbus today and since our new DIL is involved in dietary field we all attended the show. Arrived before 10 AM, stayed until 3 PM and did not resist the samples in front of me, some healthy, some not so healthy. Only good thing was I did a lot of walking, even walked briskly several blocks back to car a few times and walked perimeter of show at faster pace. But I don't want to look at the scales until I work all of this sodium out of my bod... Tue, 16 Oct 2012 21:49:52 EST I'LL NEVER WATCH JOY'S FIT CLUB AGAIN!!! She really makes me angry!!! She steals successful people from Spark People and acts as though they lost weight because she taught them how to do it. Never allows them to mention SP. I am proud of our members who are so successful they get on her show - kudos to Nell who was on today and to her husband who is doing so well also!!!
But I do think SP should be recognized!

192 192 192 Mon, 8 Oct 2012 10:54:49 EST CHERRY CRUMB UPSIDE DOWN PIE!!! I know this is Friday, but is it Friday, the 13th???
This morning I arose with lots of energy and had so many jobs started. Before house got too warm, I decided to make DH a cherry crumb pie. After all, I needed to use that one pie crust and finish up the crumb topping in fridge. Made a big pie with two cans of cherries and nice amount of crumbs. It baked beautifully and when it was boiling over all around, I knew it was time to take it out. The oven liner caught the excess. But I ... Fri, 5 Oct 2012 17:34:30 EST What Did We Do On Our 58th Wedding Anniversary??? It was a gorgeous day in NC, one that reminded us that Fall is just around the corner.
Was our 58th wedding anniversary and our son and wife's 18th. We all did the same thing - worked like fools!!! My husband worked hard outdoors cutting up tree that fell, power-washing the deck, and was busy from 7AM to 7 PM. I had plenty to do indoors, then got granddaughter at school to take to orthodontist. Washed hardwood floors when I got home. We had late dinner of leftovers, DH ate in one ro... Tue, 11 Sep 2012 22:35:44 EST MEETING SPARK FRIENDS Next Wednesday, Sept. 12, three Sparkers are meeting at the Durham Mall just off I-85.
QUADMOM is from Texas, ADEWYNN is from Durham, and CAROLJ35 is from Wake Forest and this is the third time we have met in person. So neat to have Spark Friends from around the world and great to meet some in person.
I am wondering if there are any other Sparkers in the area who would like to join us. Let us know if you can come along!

252 252 252 Wed, 5 Sep 2012 11:57:40 EST I Will Not Eat While Standing! I Will Not Eat............. Remember when the teacher used to make students write "I will not......." a hundred times???
That's what I need to do!!! Write "I will not eat while standing" over and over.
Beginning this morning I will put nothing in my mouth (except beverages) unless I am sitting down. I am adding extra calories every day by tasting too much. Fri, 31 Aug 2012 10:35:02 EST OOPS!!! Did I Forget The Meat??? Since DH and I had not had any pasta for some time we decided that would be a good Sunday evening dinner. So I sauteed 4 small (7 inch) zucchini with onion, garlic, lots of red, orange and yellow peppers, and plenty of herbs in a little olive oil. Had a lot so set half the veggies aside and added one quart spaghetti sauce to the other half.
Then cooked whole grain thin spaghetti, topped it with veggie sauce and shredded mozzarella cheese. It was delicious and we never missed the meat!... Sun, 12 Aug 2012 17:45:20 EST Time to Face the Truth!!! Company is all gone and now I must face reality as I have time to think in the quiet Lake House.
Very upset with myself as I have not been so far off my eating program since I started SP. I am extremely tired and must get on the ball to get rid of the excess fluid in my body, lose the weight I am sure I have gained and have a good standing at the end of the summer challenge which ends on Friday.
Haven't gotten exercise due to lack of time, but also because of sore toe which prevents... Sun, 12 Aug 2012 17:31:57 EST Water Zumba A Spark Friend said today she was doing Water Zumba and I thought that sounded great! Since I am in the pool several hours each day in this hot weather I decided to shake up my water aerobics and swimming with some zumba. Of course, I don't know what I am doing, but I try to shake it all. Nice when nobody else sees me!!! Sat, 28 Jul 2012 22:44:41 EST SUCH GOOD NEWS ON MY RECENT BLOOD WORK!!! The words at the bottom of results from blood work done last week are:
"Your cholesterol, hemoglobin A1c, thyroid and Vitamin D are all excellent".
Isn't that good for a woman 76 years of age???
I owe my thanks to Spark People and to all of my friends and other members who have encouraged me all along the way!!!
