CAROLEE1945's SparkPeople Blog http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal.asp?id=CAROLEE1945 CAROLEE1945's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community SparkPeople.com http://assets2.sparkpeople.com/assets/nav/logo_spark.gif http://www.sparkpeople.com/ Getting back http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5662506 I want to get back to using Spark to get fit and to lose a bit of weight. Luckily, it is only ten pounds, but that can be very tricky. More important is doing the ball exercises to strengthen my quads to help my knee arthritis. And I feel very sad about my thumb arthritis, I don't know what I can do about it, except not use my hand. Wed, 2 Apr 2014 10:14:12 EST MARCH 30, 2014 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5660014 WELL, Last blog was two years ago. Since that time, I have developed knee arthritis and I wonder if all the hill walking I did back then aggravated it. I did another blog on a place called Wordpress. So, I did continue writing for these last two years. I would like to get back to Sparkpeople, but continue with Wordpress. Sun, 30 Mar 2014 12:15:18 EST Oatmeal http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5142595 1/2 cup of dry oatmeal is 150 calories. I love muesli, and turning the 1/2 cup of dry oatmeal into 1/2 cup of muesli, can make it anywhere from 200 to 300 or even more calories. I have computed various combinations using the spark recipe maker doo-dad. Actually, a fun thing to do!!!

Well, I do think the muesli sticks with a person, preventing the 11 am starvation routine. Amazing how those nuts and seeds, and raisins up the ante, both caloric wise, but also filling wise. Wed, 21 Nov 2012 13:01:55 EST Popcorn http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5139171 Yesterday I found milk to be very interesting, today it is popcorn.

I had a yen for popcorn around 4pm, my "bad" time of day. I do not like air popped or microwave, but like the old fashioned popped in oil stuff.

On my shelf I found two types of popcorn in identical looking containers, one is Safeway, called "Corn to be Wild", the other is Orville Redenbacher's original, costing twice as much.

For fun, I decided to pop both of them for comparison, experimenta... Sun, 18 Nov 2012 10:20:50 EST Milk http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5138364 I love milk.

When I enter it on my tracker, I dutifully record one cup of 3.25% milk. But I did not get the .25%!!!

So, I decided to research this 3.25% milk business. It turned out this milk was only 140 calories. I went to the items added by spark people, and almost all of them had a cup of whole milk at 150 calories. I looked on my milk carton and it said 160!!! So, I had to scroll and scroll and finally found Lucerne whole milk at 160 calories and added it to my ... Sat, 17 Nov 2012 11:59:19 EST A bit of fun http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5095124 I find it fun to measure everything to 100 grams, even milk. Some items have to be 50 grams, and some 200. If they are 200, I will enter it twice.

What this 100 gram plan does is force me to be conscious of how much I am putting on my plate or bowl. Also, I am teaching myself grams and ounces. I toggle between the two on my scale, trying to guess. I am still not sure how many ounces 100 grams is.

This is good for my aging brain. Do not need to get one of those brain... Thu, 11 Oct 2012 10:43:47 EST 100 Gram Plan http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5093995 It is very important to keep changing how we use Spark, to keep it fresh and alive. My new plan is to list everything in 100 gram increments, since most of the foods on Spark are listed that way. Also, it will force me to weigh things.

I think sharing a food tracker with another Spark member is the absolute best thing a person can do to lose weight.

But I admit, for my personality and background, tracking is easy. I was a teacher, so I was always tracking the kids prog... Wed, 10 Oct 2012 12:34:25 EST What do you do when you do hurt yourself exercising? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5092534 I was so proud of myself to do Coach Nicole's 7 minute exercise band routine. The first exercise, where you raise the band over your head, she warns you just to go as high as you can comfortably. Well, I overdid it, and now I have a little pain in my chest, not a big one, but enough to make me swear off exercise!!! I mean, any little excuse, right??? Tue, 9 Oct 2012 11:02:55 EST Another great excuse!!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5091637 I made a three bean salad for myself, chock full of all that fiberosity we are supposed to eat. I used a lot of garlic, because I love it. However, the taste in my mouth was just too strong, so I had to eat a yoplait and a half for dessert, trying to get the taste out. I actually felt stuffed, and absolutely would not have eat the yoplait except for this.

How do people get the taste of garlic out???? Mon, 8 Oct 2012 17:17:38 EST Tossed two chocolate chip cookies http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5091077 Saturday night I was all alone for dinner. I had just gotten home from a babysitting stint at my daughter's, and I was too tired to cook. So, first I thought I would have yogurt, bananas, and strawberries. A healthy dinner, right? But halfway through, I just couldn't stick it anymore, and so I made a big batch of popcorn with butter so I could watch a DVD on my new big screen tv. Popcorn goes with a soda, right? So, I happened to have a bottle of gourmet root beer that I had bought for a... Mon, 8 Oct 2012 10:07:40 EST Julia http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5089898 I am really enjoying the book, Julie and Julia. I got out my old copy of Mastering the Art of French Cooking. I have the same edition that Julie "stole" from her mother. I can look up the recipes she talks about.

In addition, I took out a biography about Julia Child that is fascinating and dovetails with the movie and the book. Now, I would like to view some old videos of her cooking show.

Yes, indeed, the thing about a public blog like this is that you cannot write ab... Sun, 7 Oct 2012 11:18:13 EST Back to blogging http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5088771 The gal in the Julie and Julia movie inspired me to get back to my own blog!!! I got the book from the library, and I am looking forward to reading it. We will see, I am a very picky reader.

I tracked all my foods yesterday, they are all my shared tracker on my spark page. I was not hungry and the calories were under 1800 and I do not understand how I did it!!!

I bought myself a new top to wear and two people told me I looked thinner. So, it really matters what we ... Sat, 6 Oct 2012 09:14:31 EST Julie and Julia http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5087680 I seem to have taken a long break from Spark, and didn't even realize how long it had been until I looked at the date on this blog. September 26????

I watched Julie and Julia for the second time last night, and so I am inspired to get back to the blog. That is an absolutely wonderful movie from so many angles. The food photography is fantastic, the weaving in of the two stories is creative, and the acting superb. To see a positive take on marriage in a movie is highly unusual. <... Fri, 5 Oct 2012 10:04:57 EST Restaurant Blues!!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5075488 Here I am again. I did really well yesterday until going to a restaurant for dinner. Why is it so hard to make good choices at that time??

It is very foggy here, wet and horrible, and so walking is not appealing. Wed, 26 Sep 2012 09:19:53 EST My Fitness Plan http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5070745 How odd I missed the blog yesterday. And almost today, too. I am doing the foods on Spark and then just entering the calories on My Fitness Plan. I hope this works for me.

Pros: I was very hungry by 11 am and ate a hard boiled egg, and then was not even hungry for lunch.

A piece of my tooth came off, so I couldn't really eat, and so I had a smoothie. Yogurt, fruit, nonfat milk, pretty good. Still the good old cal.s add up!!! Sat, 22 Sep 2012 19:54:36 EST How do we keep from feeling starved? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5067549 This is my conundrum!!! I know Spark has ideas. I will look a few up after I finish this blog.

I have slacked off on my strength exercises, and I want to get back to them. It is so hard to establish a habit like that, isn't it? I have no excuse. I am retired, I have plenty of time!!!

I give myself credit for consistency. It is nice that spark has those little awards.

Edit: 7:30 am -- Just did coach nicole 7 minute exercise band routine. FELT SO GOOD. Now h... Thu, 20 Sep 2012 09:23:05 EST My Fitness Pal http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5066335 I really like the clean, clean interface of My Fitness Pal. Nothing to distract you. However, I also like Spark. So, here is how I can do both. I am going to Spark first thing in the morning, doing the trivia and the blog, and the trackers. With Fitness Pal I will either just enter the calories, or if it was a simple meal, enter the foods. My Fitness Pal makes it easier to enter foods that you eat all the time.

I love Coach Nicole and her exercises. I think I can use both we... Wed, 19 Sep 2012 12:20:08 EST Yay, Tues-Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5064641 Okay, I am laughing at myself, and that is Good.

Here I am: upstairs (computer is downstairs)....I go downstairs to enter my foods in my Spark tracker....I get on the computer.....I go to about ten different websites....read email....go back upstairs.....realize I have not entered the foods on Spark!!!

Spark is my priority!!! Yet, how does this happen? I purposely go downstairs with the intention to enter the calories on Spark, and totally forget about it within five se... Tue, 18 Sep 2012 10:02:51 EST I love Monday!!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5062837 Of course, when I worked, Mondays were not any fun at all. Now, it is wonderful to be able to feel fresh and starting all over again. I am going to start a jewelry making class, and I plan to walk to it!!! It will take about 45 minutes. I may take the bus back.

Also, for today I plan to measure all food items, and eat simply. When you eat those dishes with everything mixed up, it is so hard to really know how many calories you have had. Mon, 17 Sep 2012 09:27:39 EST Both Spark and Fitness Pal http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5061554 So far, it has been pretty easy to do both Spark and My Fitness Pal. I can be more specific with Spark, and then just enter a shortened version on the other website, and get the immediate feedback. The interface is much cleaner and I think just doing something new is motivating. I am not going to weigh myself until I think I have finally lost a few lbs. We will see. Sun, 16 Sep 2012 12:39:23 EST My Fitness Pal http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5059019 I don't think My Fitness Pal is as accurate as Spark, but I have been only doing it, along with Spark, for a week. I am desperate for some motivation, and I find it motivating. Spark has such a huge range of entries, way more than My Fitness Pal. I appreciate that they have all the Costco and Trader Joe items. But My Fitness Pal may be easier to use on a vacation. (although who counts calories on a vacation???) Still, gaining 3 lbs on the cruise after having a stable weight for 3 years re... Fri, 14 Sep 2012 11:48:12 EST Morning again.... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5057742 Morning comes again. Wonderful morning. A time to start over. I am going to continue with Spark, but also do My Fitness Pal. The interface is cleaner and it motivates me. I am not going to do the 5% challenge because I did three and did not lose any weight. Not their fault, of course. Very hard to find a system for oneself that works!!!

Spark has so many distractions on it, it is easy to get lost playing games and taking quizzes instead of just getting out there and walking!!!... Thu, 13 Sep 2012 14:17:05 EST Blogs http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5055915 Blogging really does help me. I did a journal my entire life off and on, so it is rather easy for me. Of course, I think it is more therapeutic to write by hand. I read Julia Cameron's book, The Artist Way, and she has very good reasons as to why a person should journal that way.

But then this is just a quick blog, not a soul searching piece of writing.

Goal for today: continue to record calories. Try to limit breakfast and lunch so that can have a regular dinner. Pro... Wed, 12 Sep 2012 11:23:47 EST Spark Analysis http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5054203 I am analyzing which parts of Spark help me and which are just me wasting time.

1. Entering the foods I eat and measuring.

2. Entering the exercise time and looking to see if I am meeting my goal of 1000 minutes a month.

3. The trivia game takes very little time and puts a dot of awareness into my head. Tue, 11 Sep 2012 10:40:03 EST Another way to enter calories http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5052614 I found another app, this one called My Fitness Pal. I am going to try to do both Spark and this one. It had advantages over spark, but many disadvantages. Maybe if I have to enter my calories twice, I will really get it in my head not to have so many!!! Mon, 10 Sep 2012 13:43:19 EST Do I really and truly want that potato chip? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5048781 I bought a bag of potato chips, because they were two for the price of one. Now, if I can be sucked into that type of trap, what about other people in the United States, who have a lot less Spark Education than I have???

Yesterday, I had about an ounce (170 calories) and they just tasted so yummy (with beer)

Today, I had another ounce with lunch, and they did not taste yummy. (with tuna sandwich)

Now, I actually just ate a few and even tossed the rest out. Ha... Fri, 7 Sep 2012 16:17:15 EST Feel better http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5048605 I feel better so I finally went for a walk after a two week hiatus. I see the pattern now. I am slowly getting better, my mouth still feel burned, but only slightly, not as bad as a few days ago. My eye still feels dry, but is not hurting. And my energy is coming back. I wonder if drinking a lot of water really helped. I better try again today. The only problem is the excessive bathroom time, and my body is not good about holding urine when I sneeze!!! Fri, 7 Sep 2012 13:36:27 EST Lazy http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5047519 I feel lazy for some reason, not up to par as normal. My usual activities do not interest me today. Well, now tomorrow is Friday again!!! Another week gone....scary.... Thu, 6 Sep 2012 18:57:34 EST Illness not a good way to lose weight. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5045750 For the last 3 days, I have had this feeling as if my mouth were burned, and my right eye really hurts on the right side of it. That feeling like when you were a kid and got a sty in your eye. But no sty. I am also so tired at night that nothing interests me. Wierd for me.

Made the mistake of looking up symptoms on the internet, and there is this strange syndrome some women over 50 tend to get. Wed, 5 Sep 2012 15:18:21 EST Sunday Already? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5040955 How can this be? I was just commenting on how great it was to start over on Monday, and now I see tomorrow is another Monday????

Another "self talk" I am initiating is when I am about to reach for candy, I ask myself, "Do I really really want this?" Often, the answer is no. I am reaching out of habit or boredom. If I am really badly craving chocolate, then it is okay for me to have it.

Note: As I have aged, I do not have the intense chocolate cravings I used to have... Sun, 2 Sep 2012 09:40:06 EST 140 or Bust!!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5038520 Do not want my bust to be 140, just my weight.

A busy day yesterday, forgot to check back.

Will continue with my plan: before I choose what to eat, or before I put things into my mouth, I will repeat to myself: scale to read 140, scale to read 140.

Report 10:30 am -- I just cut butter up into half tablespoon pats and put in the refrigerator. Do not deprive yourself of something you love, but just limit it. Fri, 31 Aug 2012 09:03:54 EST Another day, today!!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5037163 I love each fresh new morning. It just makes me feel so good.

Going to try my mental awareness plan today, again. I went over my calories yesterday, but that was okay, because I had a really special dinner. I did very well up to dinner time, and that is better than nothing!!!

So, I know I am going out for lunch, but it is with a skinny person who never eats much, and so that part will be easy.

The main thing is controlling dinner portions. I am having my m... Thu, 30 Aug 2012 09:36:42 EST New Plan http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5035861 I actually am a rather sloppy person. I do not coil up the hose after I use it. I leave the washcloth all crunched up instead of neatly squeezing it out and spreading it on the rack so it will dry. Awhile back, I decided to change these habits. It is all about slowing down. (I have a natural tendency to do everything fast. My mom and daughter do too) So, what I did was, when I was about to just leave a mess, I would say to myself, "re-training, re-training" sort of like the GPS says, "re-... Wed, 29 Aug 2012 10:17:46 EST Not a happy camper http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5034536 I am not a happy camper right now. I feel like it is impossible to lose any weight. Maybe this is my natural weight, and I should just forget about it all.

It is really hard not to see any progress. However, if I look at my calorie intake, why should I be surprised???? Duh.....

Everyone is different, and a system that works for one person does not work for another. Tue, 28 Aug 2012 11:19:14 EST Blah http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5026248 Another grey, cold, wet morning, and I am very unmotivated. I put on my Coach Nicole strength workout after doing the trivia quiz and being reminded about how important strength training is. But I quit after 3 minutes.

My weight was stable for two years and I joined Spark to lose ten pounds, and now, instead, I gained three pounds (on the cruise) and I just cannot get it off. It is seeming like cruise was not worth it, if this is the result.

I know for a fact I am eat... Wed, 22 Aug 2012 11:23:28 EST Dry Mouth Woes http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5024584 For the last ten years or so, I have had an uncomfortable dry mouth--I even wake up in the middle of the night with it, dying with the drying!!

I find myself obnoxious to be always chewing gum (sugarless) which does help. Today I went to a website to find out if there was anything else I could do about it. The first recommendation was the gum because it stimulates saliva, but get this, Spark people, they recommend and I quote:

Sip water or other sugar-free juices frequ... Tue, 21 Aug 2012 09:09:15 EST Blue Moon Beer http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5024012 I did take the Blue Moon beer to my brother's birthday party, and it was a huge hit!!! I did not realize it is some special beer people like, and one person even said, "have you ever tried it with a slice of orange?" (I think that is what he said)

Taste is a funny thing. It did not taste as good the second time I tried it.

Mon, 20 Aug 2012 21:13:52 EST I get an A + today. Or an F???? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5022050 Okay, the bad news is my weight is up two more pounds. (well 1.5)

The good news is all this week I was able to break my snacking -on-chocolate-chips habit.

Is the glass half full or half empty, Spark-wise? Sun, 19 Aug 2012 16:41:32 EST Beer, as a snack?? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5021623 Can you even believe that yesterday I had beer as a snack?

Here is the reason: I have seen four great movies this summer and all of them had this very enticing ad for Blue Moon beer, a beverage that I had never tasted before. So, I bought a 12-can carton on the pretext that I would be taking it to a barbeque for my brother's birthday. Then, I decided it did not matter if I just took one out, instead of bringing the entire carton. They won't notice, will they? Sun, 19 Aug 2012 10:11:40 EST Sugar Rule (rather than Sugar Rules!!) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5019743 On and upwards with my self-training to get control of a sugar addiction. I am making a rule for myself. Only have cookies, cake, pie if you are eating it with someone else. There is no person lonelier that the pie-eating solitary woman. Fri, 17 Aug 2012 16:58:46 EST Training, training http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5018411 I am re-training myself right now, as regards sugar items. Whenever I have a desire for candy or something sugary, I say to myself, "training, training". I am training myself to not respond to these cues. I am not eliminating sugar entirely. It is okay if it is in a cornmeal muffin that I am having with a chile dinner. I had a chai latte with sugar for breakfast this morning; that is okay. I think it is when a person gets extreme and tries to go off sugar entirely, that there is a backlas... Thu, 16 Aug 2012 17:15:19 EST Two Good Days http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5016308 I have had two good days since my vacation blow-out. Not only do I feel mad at myself for eating three cookies instead of just one at the bed and breakfast place 3 days in a row, for buying 3 big slabs of chocolate at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory instead of one, having a dessert every night that I didn't even enjoy that much. To top it off, I also over-did it on spending money and left quit... Mon, 13 Aug 2012 09:51:48 EST Tracking habit http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4999255 This is funny. I was going to take some time off tracking, and I found I couldn't do it!!! Even though I slacked off on measuring, I still felt compelled to track my foods, even though I know it is not really accurate. So, I know I will get back to measuring again. I am eating way too much now. I bought some Italian hazelnut chocolate chips that were "on sale" at a gourmet grocery store. I do not think I need to explain what is happening with those little gems.
