So, a while ago, I decided, for whatever reason, to try and make my own Kombucha at home. For those of you who don't know, Kombucha is basically fermented tea, and it contains a lot of probiotics, so it is excellent for gut health. It is very low in sugar, and is fizzy, so its kind of like drinking pop. The downside, is that it runs $4-5 for a 500ml bottle. I decided that I could make it for a lot cheaper at home. In order to make Kombucha, you first have to have a SCOBY (Symbiotic Colony of ... Sat, 10 Jun 2017 13:19:30 EST Camping On Tuesday, we got back from a 5 day camping trip. My eating was certainly not stellar, but its definitely a step up from what my previous camping fare was, usually lots of marshmallows, hot dogs, bread, chips, and other junk food. This time, I ate a lot of meat, eggs, and popcorn, but most of the meat and eggs were organic. I also snacked on nuts and dried fruit, while not the healthiest, its better than chips for sure. I also got a lot of steps in. Sam and I went for a 5Km hike one day, so ... Thu, 8 Jun 2017 23:56:45 EST SUGAR! So, I've found that when it comes to accepting new information from other people, I'm a bit of a skeptic. I have to do the research and hear the facts for myself before I'll buy into what they're saying. Case in point: sugar. My mom found out that she had "pre-hypothyroidism" last time she went to the doctor and so she has been trying to change her diet in hopes that her numbers will be better at her next appointment. I'm not sure how I feel about trying to cure hypothyroid through diet. I'm ... Wed, 31 May 2017 00:57:45 EST Changes I was just reading my last blog posts on here - almost a year ago! I haven't lost weight since my last blog - 230 pounds. My weight went up to a high of 242, and is now about 235. It's been a very busy year, mostly with school. I had my first full time clinical placement in the fall, and it was certainly a crazy ride. The clinical itself was a full-time job +, and I was also trying to work and volunteer. Clinical was much harder than I anticipated, and my confidence plummeted. Instead of rel... Fri, 26 May 2017 13:32:16 EST Some Small Victories I've been counting calories now for almost a week, and I'm actually kind of liking it! This time, I'm doing things a bit differently. Instead of picking a low number, and putting pressure on myself to stick to it, I'm simply tracking what it eat. No pressure, no goal number. It's helping me to see like "Whoa, the portion size of that food I eat all the time is waaay too big". My calorie range has varied a lot, from about 1700-2600.
On Saturday, I worked 8-430. (I work at Starbucks). I f... Tue, 19 Apr 2016 11:41:43 EST Counting Calories? :( I used to count calories. In fact, I can remember counting when I was 14. I was very uninformed then and would try to limit myself to 600-800 calories a day. And I would fail, of course. I definitely did not have an eating disorder, I just logically thought that the less I ate, the more I would lose. Anyway, over the next many years, calorie counting continued to be my method of choice to try to lose weight. But it never worked. It always came with a sense of restriction that I couldn't keep ... Wed, 13 Apr 2016 11:10:52 EST Breakfast I used to absolutely LOVE breakfast, and I would have no problem eating anything in the morning, as soon as I got up. Lately, however, for some reason, I can't stomach much besides plain, bland carbs. Toast with butter, cereal and milk, or a sweet pastry like a muffin. Those aren't the most nutritious or filling breakfasts, so I'm trying to eat a bit more, and more nutritious foods.

Today's Breakfast:
-Navel Orange, 60 calories
-Activia Yogurt Cup, 100 calories
-Tur... Tue, 12 Apr 2016 11:19:16 EST Busyness! This weekend has been super busy. I have final exams this week, four of them. My plan was to study all day Friday and Saturday, until 5/6 pm. We had Youth on Friday night, and Young Adults on Saturday night.
On Friday, Sam called me around 2:30 pm. His car had broken down, and I had to go pick him up. We spent the rest of the afternoon until youth working on the car with my parents, so dinner was eating out. At least it was Tim's, not super unhealthy. The youth even that night was a tra... Mon, 11 Apr 2016 10:52:46 EST 85 Pounds At my lowest weight, in 2013, I was 145 pounds. Since then, I have gained 85 pounds. It's hard to say, and what exactly caused me to gain weight, but I think it was a lot of factors.
-It began, I think, when I started to feel more relaxed about my weight, thinking, "A little treat here won't make a difference", but too many treats DO make a difference.
-I also slowly stopped exercising
-In 2014, I started dating Sam. As a result, I started eating out more, or e... Thu, 7 Apr 2016 11:25:16 EST Another Doctor, More Tests So, I saw an internist today. He was a very nice doctor. He thinks that nothing serious is wrong with me, and that I have a simple case of IBS. However, he is sending me for a blood test to look for celiac or inflammation, as well as an occult blood test (blood in the stool that can't be seen to the naked eye). He said that if the tests come back clear, then I should experiment with my diet to see if any particular foods are bothering me. If my symptoms get worse, then I should come back to s... Sat, 21 Dec 2013 21:46:56 EST Running :D So, I've stopped running for a few months because of my knee issues; but I've literally been CRAVING a run. So I ran a slow mile on the treadmill yesterday. It was AMAZING! And no knee pain!!! :D However, the inner hip pain I've been having that I've been having seemingly in connection to my pelvic/ovary pain got REALLY bad, and my leg above my knee was achy, and the hip pain lasted all day, in addition to the onset of the worst pelvic pain yet. So, I'm kind of scared to run again. The pelvic... Tue, 17 Dec 2013 12:46:42 EST A New Week and Soy Eggnog So, soy eggnog is basically the best thing ever made. I've been able to find Silk Noel Nog at one grocery store, and it's amazingggggg! I don't understand why it only come in 1 L bottles LOL It's also waaaaay lower in fat and calories than traditional eggnog. Not as rich and creamy, of course, but still with the same delicious flavor. NOMMMMM!

I weighed today and am still the same weight as last week (maybe something to do with soy eggnog? lol). Frustrating, but better than going u... Mon, 2 Dec 2013 14:13:27 EST Drink Calories O.O So, over the past couple months at Starbucks, I've gotten into the habit of drinking a lot of sugary drinks, as well as the leftovers of frappuccinos. I wasn't tracking the calories, but I'm sure it was a lot. Today, I drank what I felt like was a lot less than I have been. I added up all the calories. While the numbers on my tracker were OK, my calories just from drinks were over 700!! Whaaaaaat?! Time to chill out on the drinks lol. My calorie total today is still going to be around 1900 or... Wed, 27 Nov 2013 18:35:53 EST Decisions, Decisions! So, I'm starting nursing school in January (yippee!!) and my school offers lunch hour fitness classes. I want to take full advantage of these since I have to pay the gym membership fee anyway as part of my tuition; also, I have no classes from 11-2, so I have three hours to kill. The hard part is deciding which classes to take.

Here's the choices:

Monday: Muscle Mania, Spin and Core, Aqua Karate, or Cardio Combo

Tuesday: Tabata, Sweat and Sculpt, Deep Water F... Mon, 25 Nov 2013 13:57:42 EST Migraine :( I was supposed to work 8-4:30 today, but I had to leave at one because I had a migraine so bad I couldn't function. It was one of the worst ones I've had. I came home, took a hot bath, ran a hot shower for the steam (that always seems to help for some reason), took a bunch of advil, and a shot of espresso (caffeine also seems to help somewhat) and laid. It gradually went away over the afternoon. It was definitely a migraine, and not just my "normal" constant headache. I don't know what trigge... Sat, 23 Nov 2013 23:03:15 EST A Better Day Today was a better day. Breakfast was oatmeal with berries, maple syrup, and peanut butter and a piece of gingerbread loaf. It was my day off and I went to the mall with Mom and Grandma to buy some much needed winter clothes. We went to Starbucks, and I managed to avoid high calorie sugary drinks, and just ordered an Americano with soy milk. We ate lunch in the food court, but I was able to find a healthy option: Extreme Pita. I had a falafel pita, which is just a small whole wheat pita with ... Thu, 21 Nov 2013 21:52:25 EST Focus on the Positive So, me eating today, at least at work, wasn't that good. And I didn't exercise. But I want to focus on the positive instead of being down about myself.

~I ate a healthy breakfast
~I ate a healthy dinner
~I drank a moderate amount of water
~My job is walking, moving, lifting, on my feet for 7 hours, so I definitely wasn't sedentary today

Gonna keep moving forward. One decision, one day at a time. :)
Thu, 21 Nov 2013 00:32:02 EST A Year Has Gone By So, it's been almost a year since my last post. I had several goals for this year, and because of a lot of circumstances they mostly haven't been met. I wanted to lose 10-15 more pounds, run a lot, and become more balanced in my healthy lifestyle. I have in fact, gained 10 pounds from my lowest of 145. I am now at 155 which is about the same as this time last year. So while I am bummed that I haven't yet reached my goal weight, I am happy that I didn't net any weight gain this year. I have be... Mon, 18 Nov 2013 14:50:58 EST Thomas Edison, GMOs, and Vietnamese Food "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration."

So says Thomas Edison.

Meh. I beg to differ, at least with myself. For me, a huge part of this healthy lifestyle is mental. Like, huge. Once I win the mental battles, the rest is so much easier, although I will admit that they require a lot of perspiration. And the proof of a mental victory is in the perspiration. There are days when I go through the whole day debating as to whether or not I should exercise or if I should... Mon, 7 Jan 2013 14:01:15 EST Goals for 2013 So, let's see...last time I blogged I weighed in at 160 and the lowest I had been down to was 158. I think my weight may be up around 160 right now, but mostly just because I've eaten poorly the last couple day, have eaten a lot of sodium, not much water, I'm sick, etc. I went on a 5 day juice fast with Tyler just before Christmas. He's home from college for the holidays and wanted to do a fast. I got down to an all time low of 153!! My goal was to be down to 155 by the end of this year, and... Sun, 30 Dec 2012 15:41:52 EST My First 5K and Other Things On Saturday, I ran in my first 5K race, the Santa Shuffle. I definitely didn't come in first with a time of 48:32, but I wasn't the last one either. A lot of the people that finished in a similar time to me were either doing running/walking intervals, or started off running and ended up walking. I ran very slowly, but I ran through the whole thing, so I'm happy about that. The race was hard! Part of the problem was that I started off too fast, due to adreniline, and just being surrounded by o... Tue, 11 Dec 2012 14:57:19 EST It's Been a While... So, it's been almost a month since I've posted a blog and it's time to update!

I ended my juice fast about a month ago at Day 32. Since then I've eaten 90% healthy and vegan, with the occasional treat or animal product. I gained five pounds after ending the fast, which I expected due to food being in the system, etc. However, I became really frustrated as I realized that I was not losing any weight. I wasn't gaining past the quick initial 5 pound gain, but I wasn't losing. I didn't... Thu, 29 Nov 2012 16:24:59 EST A Marathon? Me? So, yes, I have somehow got it in my head that I want to run a marathon. I think I'm officially crazy. I decided yesterday that I want to run in the New York City Marathon (the day before the 2012 marathon was canceled, ironically). I researched it and discovered that it is an achievable goal. A person who has a running base of being able to run 3 miles can do a marathon training program in 16-20 weeks. Today, Mom and I went to the second hand store and I found a book called "Run Your First M... Fri, 2 Nov 2012 22:21:43 EST New Goals and What I ate Today So, today is the first day back to eating solid food. Like I've said before, I'm following Dr.Fuhrman's 6 week plan from his book "Eat to Live". It is a very strict diet, meant to encourage weight loss. There are several reasons I'm following this plan.
1.) The foods will be the best and easiest for my body to digest after a long fast
2.) High fat foods like nuts, avocados, and oils, and well as ALL dried fruit, dairy, and meat are severely limited or not allowed; this will help m... Thu, 1 Nov 2012 21:54:13 EST The End of Juicing Well, we are on vacation. Sort of, anyway LOL.

We are in a city about 4 hours away from home. We got here on Monday and are leaving on Saturday. Dad is here taking a course for work, and I had a facial therapist appointment on Tuesday. Because apparently there's no facial therapists where I live (!?!?!). (Note to self: become a facial therapist and make lots of $$$). Anyway, the facial therapist was very pleased with my progress at 4 months post-op. I have a significant amount of ... Thu, 1 Nov 2012 12:08:19 EST Juicing Day 28: Cooking and Juicing Today is Day 27. Our cooking class on Wednesday was canceled. So, I had to give in to my inner chef today and cooked some soup. Mom mentioned that we had a squash in the pantry if I felt like cooking today. (When do I NOT feel like cooking? LOL) I originally thought about making a simple pureed soup with roasted garlic, onion, and squash. However, I started getting more ideas, and made a hearty southwestern-flavored soup with lentils, black beans, salsa, and corn. I tried the broth and it was... Sat, 27 Oct 2012 21:37:41 EST Juice Fasting: Day 27 Today is Day 27. Still juicing.

I haven't done any runs or really much of any exercising for the past week and a half. I did some treadmill and elliptical yesterday, as well as an ab workout, which I'm feeling today LOL. Today, I went for a one mile run outside and it was COLD. There was a thin layer of snow on the sidewalk, but no ice so it wasn't a problem. I took my earbuds out and enjoyed hearing the crunch of snow underneath my feet. :) I had to bundle up in layers, hats, and... Fri, 26 Oct 2012 14:58:37 EST Juice Fasting: Day 25 Highest Weight (June 2012):203
Weight Beginning Juice Fast: 179
Current Weight: 162
Total Weight Lost: 41 lbs

Well, it's been a little while since my last post. I've been fairly busy this past week and a half. Juicing is still going well. I'm almost at the half-way point. It's hard for me to believe that I've gone 25 days without eating solid food. Yikes! I've started drinking a little bit of caffeine here and there. Also, I made some vegetable broth and added some ... Wed, 24 Oct 2012 17:22:47 EST Juice Fasting: Day 15 SW:179
CW:168

Today is Day 15. First day of week 3 and 1/4 of the way done.

Mom and Dad have both started a 30 day juice fast today. Yay!! So our fridge is going to be full of fruits, veggies, and juice, and not much else for the next month LOL.

Down 11 pounds since starting this fast, and a total of 35 pounds since the beginning of June! Whoo :) Sun, 14 Oct 2012 16:00:16 EST Juice Fasting: Day 14 SW: 179
CW:169

So, today is Day 14. It's kind of hard to believe I've gone two weeks without eating solid food. Yikes! Things are going good. I'm feeling generally very good. I still have the headaches, as per normal. No change there. I'm not nearly as hungry anymore which is great. We bought a new juicer, and Omega VRT350. I like it a lot, although it has pros and cons. One big pro is that it doesn't oxidize the juice nearly as much, so that means it stays fresh and nutrient ... Sat, 13 Oct 2012 13:18:19 EST Juice Fasting:Days 6 & 7 I will write more about the fast later, as I don't have a lot of time right now. I just wanted to say that I RAN 3.1 MILES/5K WITHOUT STOPPING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sat, 6 Oct 2012 15:05:20 EST Juice Fasting: Day 5 SW:179
CW:174
Total weight lost: 5 pounds

It's Day 5. I woke up this morning with bad cramps - it's that TOM. :( Unfortunately, I have to work today, so I took Advil, even though the juicing purists would say that's taboo. If I could just stay at home all day I may have tried to suck it up. Anyway, I was hoping that taking Advil on an "empty" (juice filled) stomach wouldn't be a problem, and thankfully it wasn't.

Juices for today: Green Juice, of course. I also... Thu, 4 Oct 2012 14:03:13 EST Juice Fasting: Day 4 - Two Mile Run!! :) SW: 179
CW: 174
Total Weight Lost: 5 pounds

So, today is Day 4.

I went for my C25K run this morning, week 5, day 2. I was supposed to run 3/4 mile, walk 1/2 mile, and run 3/4 mile. But I felt like I could run farther so I ended up doing a solid 2 mile run!! No stopping! The farthest I've ever done was the one mile run a couple weeks ago! Whoo hoo!! =D I ran quite slow, of course, but I didn't stop! That's about 2/3 of the distance of the 5K.

I'm st... Wed, 3 Oct 2012 15:59:23 EST Juice Fasting: Day 3 Starting Weight: 179
Current Weight: 175
Total Weight Lost: 4 pounds

So, today is Day 3. I went for a 30 minute swim this morning. It wasn't as intense as I normally swim, but I didn't want to do too much. Since I'm only consuming juice, I want to make sure that I don't over exert myself.

I'm feeling much better physically today than the past two days. My headache is continuing to improve, although it's definitely still there. However, MUCH better than Sunday. ... Tue, 2 Oct 2012 18:46:47 EST Juice Fasting: Days 1 and 2 So, I have decided to begin a juice fast, hoping to go for 60 days. This is something I've wanted to do for a while, but I just didn't feel comfortable doing it while I was recovering from surgery. I've decided that now is a good time to do it, especially with my weight being so stubborn.

My goals for the fast:
1.) Lose weight. I would like to lose 30 pounds on this fast; however, I know that I may lose less than that, and I'm OK with that. I know that weight loss is not the ... Mon, 1 Oct 2012 20:58:40 EST The Grand Canyon On Saturday my parents and flew off to Colorado to visit my brother who is on internship there. On Sunday after attending church, and seeing several friends and classmates from Summit, we left for alberqueque. On Monday we drove to Flagstaff, Arizona, and yesterday we visited the Grand Canyon. It was a spectacular sight; however if you plan to visit for more than half a day, you definitely need some activities planned like hiking, biking, or rafting.

Eating on this trip has been fa... Wed, 26 Sep 2012 11:02:33 EST I Ran a Mile!!! So this week, my motivation has almost disappeared. It's a mind battle just to get myself to exercise and my eating has not been great. I know I've been emotionally eating because of stress, frustration, loneliness, or being tired. Today is Wednesday, a C25K day. The last thing I wanted to do was "torture" myself with running. I went back and forth in my mind all morning, "yes, no, yes, no, yes, no". Finally I just did it. I chose a different path to run on today for a change of scenery. This... Wed, 19 Sep 2012 19:32:43 EST My Crazy Life This past week has been a bit crazy! My uncle went in for surgery on Tuesday morning. The previous night I had closed at work, which means I worked until 10:30 PM. I got up at 4:00 am to go to the hospital with him, my mom, my aunt, and my grandma. His surgery went fine, despite the apprehensions of the anesthesiologist because of his weak lungs. I then went to work to close again so I worked until 10:30. I hadn't prepared any kind of food at all for the day, so my eating wasn't very good. I ... Fri, 14 Sep 2012 22:26:50 EST On the Road to Becoming a Runner :) So on Friday, I don't know what got into me, but I did 2 hours of working out!! I went to the pool to swim, intending to just swim 300 M and see how long it took me because that is the swimming distance of the Tri-it Triathlon. I ended up swimming for an hour and going 900 M. I took rests between laps, so I don't think I actually burned the 500 calories Spark told me I burned, but it was still great! I love swimming so much :) My mom got me into swimming lessons literally when I was still a b... Tue, 11 Sep 2012 13:34:35 EST The Scale FINALLY Moved So yesterday, it moved to 179.5 - half a pound below what it's been fluctuating (180-182). Today it was 178.5. Whoo-hoo!!!!!! I'm so happy about that. It will probably keep fluctuating like it seems to enjoy doing, but it's lower than it's been for two years!! I joined Spark in May 2010 and got down to 178 in June 2010, and it's been up hill from there. So it's so great to finally be down again.

I did my C25K workout yesterday - it was Week 3, Day 2. It was a great day for running... Thu, 6 Sep 2012 14:32:17 EST Back from Vacation So we got back from our vacation yesterday. We got home around 5pm and I was tired, but I went immediately to do my C25K workout. It was Day 1 of Week 3. This week I begin running by either distance OR time, whereas the first two weeks were strictly time. I decided to run by distance and walk by time. In other words, I ran 200 meters (about 90 seconds), walked 90 seconds, ran 400 meters (about 3 minutes) and then walked 3 minutes, then repeated the whole thing. I was finished both rounds at 2... Tue, 4 Sep 2012 12:12:52 EST This Change is Real Something this vacation has shown me is that this change is real and it's a lifestyle change. So often in the past, when I was on a "diet", going on vacation would be the time to indulge and let go. But not this time. This time, my parents and I are sticking to our lifestyle change. but we're having fun while we do it. Instead of stuffing ourselves with greasy food, we went out to a vegetarian restaurant, ate healthy food, and didn't stuff ourselves. Today we went on an hour bike ride on a pa... Sun, 2 Sep 2012 15:59:00 EST I Want to Enter a Triathlon Not a long one. Not even a sprint triathlon. A "tri-it" triathlon. I have no idea what put this in my head today. But as I was reading about "tri-it" triathlons, I began to realize, "hey, this is something I could do with some training, after my 5K." The distances for a try-it triathlon vary, but generally, it's a 300M swim, 2.5K run, and 10K bike ride. I've swam at least that distance before. I'm training for a 5K, so 2.5K will be easy. And I rode my bike 8K last week, so that won't be very ... Sun, 2 Sep 2012 00:39:14 EST Vacationnnn!!! =D We're going to the mountains tomorrow for four days! I'm so excited. I've decided that I'm not going to count calories on the trip. We're bringing all of our food with us - whole wheat macaroni, beans, tofu, fruit, veggies, salad ingredients, nuts, soy and almond milk, protein powder, frozen fruit. We're planning to eat out once at a vegetarian restaurant I found on Happy Cow to celebrate Dad's birthday. It's the first vegetarian restaurant any of us have ever been to, so I'm excited about th... Thu, 30 Aug 2012 23:37:59 EST Sushi and Exercise So, on Sunday, I went for a walk...I ended up walking for just over an hour - 5.5 KM!! So at least now I know I can walk a 5K even if I can't run it yet LOL. I did Day 1 of week 2 for the C25K on Monday. It was harder than Friday since the running time was increased; but it was definitely better than last Monday's workout where I almost felt sick. It was hard, but it felt so good to be able to push through and come home with the good-tired-sweaty feeling. YAY :) Today, I went for a bike ride,... Tue, 28 Aug 2012 14:41:21 EST Good and Bad Day So, today was a bad day as far as eating goes. The thing is, I expected it to be bad. I was tired and didn't have any food made to take to work. All I could find in the morning was a bit of leftover avocado-potato salad leftovers. I took that and some cherry tomatoes. Not too bad, but not a lot of food. I worked from 7:30-4:00. For breakfast before leaving, I didn't feel like my normal smoothie, so I had a bowl of corn bran cereal with soy milk, almonds, and dried cranberries. Slightly health... Fri, 24 Aug 2012 20:31:05 EST Progress So, today i did day 2 of the C25K program. It was hard, but not nearly as hard as Monday was. This could be because I'm becoming more fit. Also i made things easier on myself than last time: last time i started in the field since it's better for joints. Lol i sound likely old person talking about my joints; but my knees are already slightly messed up- my left kneecap pops out sometimes my right knee has something floating around in it from when i had a really nasty bruise from falling. My ri... Wed, 22 Aug 2012 17:23:16 EST I Signed Up for a 5K 0.0 So, yesterday, I paid $30 and signed up for a 5K run on November 16. I'm not sure what possessed me to do that. I'm out of shape and overweight. But I'm excited. I have just under three months to prepare. I decided to use the Couch to 5K program to help me get in shape and build up my stamina and endurance.

I did Week 1 Day 1 today. I decided to do it outside. I've started the C25K program twice in the past, and always used a treadmill (except when I was on vacation). However, my ... Mon, 20 Aug 2012 14:17:41 EST Something to Aim For So, I was reading through a thread on the message boards about "starvation mode". Spark Coach Dean had an excellent, very long and informative response. Basically, what I took away from his response was that I should figure out what some my age, height, goal weight, and activity level I can live with long term, would burn and eat that many calories, or slightly less.
SO,
Goal Weight:140 pounds
BMR:1466
Activity Level:1.55 { Moderately active (moderate exercise 3-5 days/we... Sun, 19 Aug 2012 18:09:32 EST I Actually Like Working Out!! The scale's not moving. And right at this moment, I don't care. I'm going to forget about it for a bit.

I can work out. That's exciting. After my surgery, when I finally got the energy to exercise, it seemed like anything that raised my heart rate, also triggered migraine headaches. So I stuck to walking at a moderate, non-heart rate raising pace. But I wanted to sweat. To feel the pain of sore muscles. To feel the rush as endorphins rushed through my body. I CRAVED exercise. I th... Fri, 17 Aug 2012 00:19:49 EST
