CAMSEDGE's SparkPeople Blog CAMSEDGE's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Sunday January 19, 2014 ahhh...another year arrives. Winter is getting old as usual with the occasional perks of a bit of green peaking up from a dried pot and off and on sunny, mild days. I got through the worst cold spell and was able to supply buckets of warm water to the ponies and heat their food but when the pipes finally froze and thawed the handle popped off the wash bay faucet and left me with a huge unpleasant mess. Just one more unpleasant memory and I have a responsible man to help me sort it all out soo... Sun, 19 Jan 2014 17:37:13 EST The Day after Christmas Laundry finishing. Animals fed. Trailer out. Mom is on her way home from my brother's home. Ready for getting back to normalcy. Thu, 26 Dec 2013 13:20:27 EST November 16, 2013 So far this Fall has been rumbling along in a good rhythm...two sets of white twin lambs. I enlisted my friends at work to come up with names this time. Hansel and Gretel, Sandie and Andy and now I have a colorful ewe lamb out of Patches...half brown, half white, star on the head, a sock and a bolero jacket...bouncy and curious.
Mom is coming up on her 90th birthday and my sister is to arrive from Germany in a couple of days. I am excited and hopeful that the visit will be good. I have n... Sat, 16 Nov 2013 00:46:01 EST November 1 Good morning. Halloween past...not much activity out our way...dark country road. The town had a celebration downtown and Mom and I went to the gym for a good work out. Bright and sunny out this way...dew glittering and vapors rising from ponds...time change is around the corner.
In the evenings I get a bit amused as Mom's poodle, Bubbles come to get me in the office to lift her into mom's lap on the 13 Bubbles just doesn't have the umph to jump up there anymore...and Mom ... Fri, 1 Nov 2013 10:42:51 EST one more note of amusement If I am going to have to get up every few hours with elderly dogs experiencing degrees of renal and cardiac disease at least I can be entertained by the content of some of my the one where I am so enthralled that I reach out to touch the brush strokes of a masterpiece painting and in horror realize the paint is wet and I begin to smooth it with my finger to make the smudge blend and only make the situation worse...and knowing that there is bound to be a camera recording my majo... Fri, 25 Oct 2013 21:40:55 EST October 25, 2013 This has been an interesting night and two days...feeding animals after work on Wednesday I saw something kind of odd hanging in the rafter above...some twenty to thirty feet up. Upon hearing a blood curdling cry and a bit of fluttering I decided to get my strong flashlight...just as Mom called asking me what I was doing...I was peering at two fat coils of snake wrapped around a plump bird...the snakes thin head reaching out in space in offence of the light...I told Mom everything was ok and ... Fri, 25 Oct 2013 21:31:42 EST October 22, 2013 Seems odd to be in one place for awhile...get comfortable and then just fade a bit...lose attention and get a bit off track...seems like an eternity but just a I am back and needing to gain some focus.
I have been getting to the gym three times a week...thanks to Mom's nudging. I know I need to get her there to keep her stronger and more mobile. Just seems like I can't get caught up and have enough energy left over to get everything done. The schedule changes at work a bit and... Tue, 22 Oct 2013 20:54:04 EST Sept 23...late Awake with a bothersome knee...flared up and better with Tylenol but going to try Aspirin now after a cup of warm cocoa. I suspect I was up on it too much today at work. Slow days are the worst because I tend to run myself ragged finding things to get done that can never be gotten to on busy days. Tue, 24 Sep 2013 00:23:14 EST September 22...Fall reprieve Really happy that the temps are pleasant. The animals are feisty and well. Mom is listening to sermons and I have placed four shrubs and planted one...getting a start on a north wind bread on the arena side of my barn. Blue skies, Sun, 22 Sep 2013 13:08:37 EST August 31...Tale of a Bunny Saturday, Aug 24 at the hay barn ..just past dark early. Sandy the half Sharpei dropped her squealing protester on the dirt floor. On closer scrutiny the tiny objector appeared to be an infant bunny...eyes and ears still tightly closed but clearly aware something was amiss. I plucked him from the ground and rubbed his wet coat dry...pondering my Cracker Jack surprise. I found a bottle of empty ear medicine with a dropper just right...made formula and coaxed my new ward to take it drop by drop... Sat, 31 Aug 2013 12:31:51 EST August a blue moon...happy blue I am so thankful for my day at home. Work is very intense this time of year and longer days as we scramble to get everything asked of us done. I slept in rejoicing in the ability to go back to bed after getting up to take dogs out and feed at 3:40am...then I realized after a reminder that the dogs were due at the groomers and family was coming out...which was fine...just a little more scrambling. Again, really thankful to have found my first cup of coffee without any bugs doing a backstroke i... Wed, 21 Aug 2013 15:36:13 EST Sunday, Aug 17, 2013 I was pleasantly surprised to see that the very anemic ram lamb I have been treating with B complex, honey water and a dose of Ivermectin is still alive this morning. He was disinterested in food and hay yesterday morning on and very lackluster. The ewe lamb in the pen with him is rallying nicely. He had a brighter eye this morning though he did not get up for hay or grain. He got another Bcomplex injection and drench with honey water. I had to get him strong enough to take the dewormer befor... Sun, 11 Aug 2013 11:33:36 EST Saturday, Aug 10 The smell of sweet, fresh hay was apparent even with the truck window up and A/C on as I rolled into the big barn. Getting out of the truck, Sandy, the half Sharpei danced up...all happy...and wet. "There is nothing so friendlier than a wet dog", I have heard the comment made...true...shaking, slapping, rubbing up against can't help get lost in such enthusiasm. Heading home I was acutely aware of my slightly leaning load on the twisty road as I gathered about 6 vehicles behind me in ... Sat, 10 Aug 2013 18:54:27 EST August 8 Charlies dentistry went great yesterday. The Rockwall Equine Center are excellent at handling my ponies. I feel very confident that this will give Charlie an edge at his training. He was comfortable after ...grabbing a mouthful of grass on our walk back to the trailer in his mildly drunken state. Another good thing about this pony is that he is very good to get in and out of a trailer...a huge plus. I am placing him with an experienced trainer in Houston to train him to be a riding pony. He h... Thu, 8 Aug 2013 13:29:39 EST August...already? The weekend zipped by...avoiding the heat and keeping water buckets full. The animals are handling the heat well enough...grazing and seeking out shade to, pretty much the same. I spent some time going through book shelves and picking a few books to give to the library to free up space. Then I read and picked out recipes to try in the following week.
Note to self...putting together a recipe when I am just home from work and tired is not really a good idea. I did manage a reaso... Mon, 5 Aug 2013 22:46:45 EST Wednesday, July 31, 2013 As usual the week is smoothing out the wrinkles of a day. The mower started fine on Mon evening after work so I spent an hour grinding down the overgrown brush on the parkway.
The morning was a little rough. Bunnie had relapsed the night before, went down in a seizure (encephalitis is a tough one)..and died. I had to move her 150 plus pounds out of the barn and 300 feet away by wheelbarrow in the dark before I left for work that morning. I am thankful for the hour long drive to allow me... Wed, 31 Jul 2013 12:08:07 EST July 28, 2013 Good afternoon. Life continues on. I have a few things going...have to lose 10 lbs in the next month...just for insurance stuff at work...which would only have been 8 if I hadn't bounced up a's to
Meanwhile back at the farm...Bunnie is continueing to improve. She is able to get up to her feet by herself and is eating and drinking on her own. She misses having company but she is still slow and stumbly and not able to compete with healthier sheep at the feed trough... Sun, 28 Jul 2013 14:47:36 EST Monday July 22 Well...I did get to the gym with Mom and we had a good work out. The ability to set the machines for myself and others and the way to go about their use is coming back to me. A friend who was very serious about working out taught me a lot about 10 years ago.
I am working with a sick ewe for almost a week now. What presented as a balance problem has now defined itself as Listerosis...infection with Listeria, a form of bacteria sometimes found in fermented grains. We had a pleasant bout of... Mon, 22 Jul 2013 22:49:18 EST Saturday Morning chores to observe some driving lessons at another ranch with friends...then back to work and to the gym tonight with Mom. Sat, 20 Jul 2013 10:10:17 EST Friday, July 19 Greetings. For the past week life has been just basically summertime busy. We were blessed to have some cooler weather preceded with the pastures are growing and the parasites are rearing their ugly little heads. The fleas are coming under control but the soft bodied ear ticks and internal parasites are wrecking havoc with the sheep. I have been wrestling with one of my more mature ewes...a very good producer who has a balance problem probably secondary to the ear ticks. This has be... Fri, 19 Jul 2013 23:39:58 EST Thursday July something... When summer gets here all the days start running together. Bright strained something so he has the next month off and tighter confinement. We drove his younger brother, Captain today for a couple o f hours...time to get myself in gear and put more work on him.Lady the mini did wonderful. Thu, 11 Jul 2013 22:02:28 EST Sunday, July 7, 2013 Sunny Sunday...serendipitous appearance of Cypress vine complete with bright red flowers and Mom dressed in crisp white linen with vibrant red scarf and just seems to be the color of the day as she drives away in her burgundy red Grand Prix on the way to Church.
I spent the morning tending animals...watering, feeding, turnout..and working fence into a more permanent configuration...that's going to take some time so I came in and had fruit salad and coffee for breakfast...and... Sun, 7 Jul 2013 13:05:24 EST July 4th 2013 Pleasant out this way...breeze, lower humidity and lower temperature. The fields are looking good. I have been mowing them over the past week. I had to stop yesterday as I literally mowed out of a tire so a friend took that for repair. That's a one of my main stresses...when stuff breaks down and I can't finish a task...along with when my body gets too sore, overheated or just tired. I kind of have a mantra about how things will be better...usually after a night's rest. Today is good. I mowed... Thu, 4 Jul 2013 11:27:02 EST Sunday June 30, 2013 Dr. Jeffress spoke on Pride and Humility this morning. Excellent lesson...hard to
Mom and I had a most excellent evening. We went into Rockwall and found the table cloth protectors, shower mat and scented soaps for a friend's Christmas present. Afterwards we got her car ready for the week..washed and filled and took in a wonderful dinner at our towns newest restaurant, Tuscan Slice...wood fired Italian cuisine...We shared a scrumptious steak, potatoes and Tuscan Spring salad... Sun, 30 Jun 2013 10:10:41 EST june 29...enjoy your grapes and eat them, too At 5 something the thought of gathering stuff and going anywhere did not bring me joy. By 800arm with cart, harness, brushes, water, hay and pony loaded I was feeling more adventuesome....after all I had removed 3wasp nest and established order once again to the barn.
What. a beautiful morning..sunny with blue sky snd northerly breeze. Horses ran to did Ephrain, the llama. Dos barreled out of dog doors and children approached shyly...stroking the ponies noses and tsking pictur... Sat, 29 Jun 2013 23:10:35 EST June 28...Yay for Friday...and no problems on the horizon With my brother's help I have discovered that Verizon limits how much energy one can draw on the system. For years my brother has added all sorts of devices for Mom and we have a multitude of phones and such. After a storm that took out a router I suddenly had all sorts of problems getting just phones to work and with those knocked out so was the internet and Mom's emergency button. After repairmen and continued problems with no sources located big brother figured the situation. It involved j... Fri, 28 Jun 2013 22:20:33 EST June 27...surfacing Electrical, phone and internet service have been troublesome for the last couple of weeks...counted the 97th dead rat. No current activity noted, rodentwise. The ponies, dogs, cat, sheep and Mom are all well. I am beginning to catch up with mowing and mucking out. I am counting my blessings here. The electrician just left for the second time. It seems so long as I don't plug a phone in the computer room I can have my internet...will have to use portables or cell. Big brother will come hook up... Thu, 27 Jun 2013 14:38:32 EST Happy Fathers Day To all good Father's and men of great can never know how far reaching is your influence. Thu, 13 Jun 2013 22:45:01 EST My second weekend This month I have a schedule I can remember with the same days off a full month in a row. I am playing with boundaries for the livestock, again. When I decide I will hammer in more permanent T post and adhere the cattle panels. The animals just look at me like "she's at it again". The last three bottle lambs are weaned but still much underfoot. The original bottle lamb of 8 years ago has decided to live on the barnside of the 200+pounds he is a bit of pain to work about but has been... Tue, 11 Jun 2013 22:41:35 EST Weekend that packs a punch Ok...planning is good but sometimes not is just as good. Even tho I was disappointed at not getting to drive at Black Star on Saturday...fixing the commuter car tire had to be a work, no play. That was done efficiently and I got some more cleaning and a little mowing done. That evening my new "permanent" neighbors came to the fence at greeting. I waded through my excited and milling sheep...feeding time...and had a very good visit. Family of 8 buying the home on my west. Homesch... Sun, 9 Jun 2013 13:57:12 EST Saturday Hmm...a few days slip by and that seems an eternity. While I was not happy for the piece of metal the size of a small butterknife piercing my tire...I did get the situation resolved and I am home today where much needs to be done and I can go at my own pace.
Yesterday morning and last night I was uneasily aware that my big dog was not coming around for dinner...I thought I heard his tags under the house. Sun, 2 Jun 2013 23:11:28 EST Saturday mid day...accomplishments and plans The 120ft by 320ft dressage arena is walk behind mower...yes, self propelled but I have to propel myself and direct the mower and by calculations I have done roughly 7000 steps for my 5' 2" frame...approx. 50 lines of 125 plus steps...and an aside to finish mowing the croquet field (wonderful for big circles...esp with the mini horse)...I coaxed myself by saying "I will take a break when it runs out of gasoline"...ha, it still hasn't run out of gas. Sat, 1 Jun 2013 11:01:13 EST Friday may 31 2013 Just a couple of hours left of this month...watching weather news. I have to shake my head at how I forget jow little control we have and how ephemeral our existence. Also glad I didn't have to feed in it is I wade thru a sea of jumping up to try to get her head in the bucket while another taps me on the butt in a hurry up gesture. That done my attention is turned to ponies...Lady sweetly nickering, Charlie's throaty plea and Captain banging on a gate in excitement , onl... Fri, 31 May 2013 23:12:18 EST Wednesday, May 29, 2013 Breezy, cloudy, humid day. Everything has gone well. The commercial mower is running after the winter spell. One lone guinea complained til I dug out his feeder and replaced it...where I had mowed. The lambs are tucked safely in a stall with enough feed for an elephant and ponies are all turned out. The flock is down front most of the day and then lounging on the west. I was happily zipping off grass and weeds that would have taken me much time and effort with the walk behind mower around McG... Wed, 29 May 2013 19:20:34 EST towards evening The humidity is thick. After lunch and a nap I headed out to the barn and being easily distracted I started trimming hedges and rose branches off of the path and tidying up the front beds. The path to the water faucet was really overgrown and needed much work so I used hedge trimmers first to get the fluffy stuff out of the way and then got a good look at the thick rose branches obliterating my view. The trunks were two inches and more in diameter. As I cut the last one a buddy called...whew.... Wed, 22 May 2013 13:21:30 EST Surfacing again on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 Some days I feel like 48 hours occurs in 24 or vice versa...this is the end of a second workday and with call ins and heavy workloads I am thankful to have my recovery time. I know I am missed when I am gone because the voice in my head quips off..."Are you Kidding???"when I am doing major multi tasking and others are literally hiding from work. The up side is that whatever happens I can usually land on my feet. I know where all sorts of stuff and places are that no one else knows exists. Tod... Sun, 19 May 2013 16:01:27 EST Friday, May 17, 2013 The air is heating up and the humidity is climbing...time to get batteries into that water spritzer, fan thingy from wal mart before we hit 100. The car A/C hasn't worked in 3 years so I just figure out how to get around it. I am thinking a neck wrap I can put in the freezer at work for the drive home will come in handy and usually a jug of water to drink driving across. This is a really nice old car...overly engineered to where fixing stuff gets way too pricey so I just hang on til it doesn'... In the meanwhile I will entertain myself reinforcing and putting up new fencelines. Fri, 10 May 2013 22:24:41 EST thursday done Hmm..stepped on scales and even with all the stress and distraction I haven't gained...yay for forming habits.
