CAMDENCYCLIST's SparkPeople Blog CAMDENCYCLIST's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Class presentation: Take 2 In August I had to present a mock lesson to my fellow TA grad students. It was terrible. There's a blog about it here somewhere (

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=4446407
).

Tomorrow, I get to do it again. Yay. Can't you just feel my enthusiasm oozing through the monitor at you?

Hopefully, I have prepared something that addresses the issues from my last failure. It is short, silly, and very specific. As long as I remembe... Sun, 16 Oct 2011 22:12:12 EST I seem fine I started going to talk therapy last week. I have a history of depression and anxiety, and this semester has presented me with some stress-producing situations. I thought it best to head off any issues that may arise, so I decided to find a therapist. She's very nice, and she seems smart and capable. She said something today, though, that sums up my troubles nicely. She told me I seem to make healthy decisions and that I seem to be level headed. She basically said I seem fine.

But ... Wed, 28 Sep 2011 22:00:52 EST Lots of grading to do I NEED to spend today grading. But it's such a daunting task that seems to never end. So I put it off and put it off. I always have so much to do though! I know I just have to do it, but it feels like I'm always doing it and never making a dent. UGH! Wed, 21 Sep 2011 10:13:21 EST I just said "You ROCK!" to myself in the mirror Cuz I am back down to 232, where I was last fall when the numbers stopped going down and started going back up. GOOD BYE 23 pounds I regained in the last year. I made it so much harder than it had to be! I ate whatever I wanted while I continued to exercise. At least I kept exercising. But I took in fried food, refined sugar, meat, copious amounts of beer, all for no reason! Since last June, I lost 63 pounds. 40 lost, then 23 gained, then 23 lost again. Why do I do this to myself? It's becaus... Sun, 18 Sep 2011 11:58:46 EST Trying to do too much? We had some projects to do for the kid's room, so we decided to do one of them. It went really well, so we decided to do another one. That one was a piece of cake so we said, "We're on a roll! What's next?" Project number three was a failure in multiple ways. We left frustrated and angry with barely a sense of accomplishment.

The moral of the story, if you plan to do something and you do it well, accept your accomplishment, pat yourself on the back, and walk out of the room. Plan t... Sat, 17 Sep 2011 21:41:40 EST This inspired me today
Fri, 16 Sep 2011 16:19:27 EST Picture day! I got my little man all dressed up for picture day today. I can't wait to get his school pics! He even let me brush his hair (quite a feat considering how much of it he has and how curly it is!). Now I feel ready to pass out again. Still knocked out with ragweed. But I will persevere and do grading, laundry, and maybe some vacuuming? I dunno, let's not get ahead of ourselves, shall we? Fri, 16 Sep 2011 13:50:27 EST Down with ragweed! I feel like crap and it's all thanks to ragweed. Fall will be here soon. Fall will be here soon. Fall will be here soon!

Wed, 14 Sep 2011 09:43:13 EST First day of soccer I'm starting to feel like a good mom. Today was the first day of soccer practice for the kiddo. As an aside, 8 teams of kindergartners in one township boggles my mind! So, now my kid is in real school finally (and seems to like it so far), on the soccer team, and taking piano lessons (AND practicing almost daily). Add that to his consistent early bedtime, strictly limited tv watching/video game playing, healthy diet, nightly bedtime stories, and of course all the love and affection I give, an... Sat, 10 Sep 2011 12:30:09 EST So tired! I think the added stress of teaching and school is causing me to sleep less soundly and to feel more stress-induced exhaustion during the day. As I sit here writing this, I feel like I could collapse onto my keyboard. I exercise every day and I've been drinking lots of water, eating freggies, and taking a food-derived multivitamin. Anyone have anymore tips for me? Meditation and yoga would probably help alleviate stress. I need to find somewhere to go and do it though. My dogs are annoyingly ... Wed, 7 Sep 2011 10:54:22 EST Fixies are scary!! My freewheel was clanking so I took it into the shop to get replaced. While I was there, I asked them to flip the flipflop hub over so I could try the bike out as a fixie. I went to pick it up on Sunday with the intention of riding it home. Then I took it for a spin in the parking lot.

Then I went down the hill in the parking lot.

Did you know that when the wheels turn on a fixie, the pedals move?
Did you know that when you go down a hill, the wheels turn really fas... Tue, 6 Sep 2011 17:38:05 EST Dominos? Ok, I'm generally a locavore, and I usually try to avoid chains, but have you seen this?

It's pretty much the awesomest thing I have ever saw with regards to pizza and healthy eating.

Yes, I said PIZZA AND HEALTHY EATING.

I'm getting a medium hand-tossed pizza, light on the sauce, with pineapple and onions. Aaron and I am going to SPLIT it. And I will stay within my daily calories! Oh yeah. Sat, 3 Sep 2011 15:47:07 EST First day I taught two classes. It was not a disaster. I think it went well. Time will tell I suppose! I will hopefully write more tomorrow but right now I'm too tired! Thu, 1 Sep 2011 23:11:04 EST Eggplant disaster So last night I decided to make my delicious, rapidly becoming famous, Low-fat Eggplant Parmesan. I sliced all the eggplant, as well as all the zucchini and summer squash. I laid the eggplant on paper towels, sprinkled with kosher salt, and laid more towels on top to draw the bitter water out of the slices. Then I lovingly floured, egg-washed, and breaded each piece, carefully arranging them on cookie sheets. I say lovingly with some sarcasm, as that is the part I despise, the part that takes... Wed, 31 Aug 2011 09:43:50 EST My last weekend One weekend before school and I blew it on a hurricane. A dud of a hurricane at that! At least around here, it was more like a thunderstorm followed by a windy day. Over-estimation was to be expected, I suppose, in light of the earthquake. I'm sure many believe these events are linked and representative of the end times. But the hurricane was slightly less apocalyptic than predicted, to say the least.

Actually, I got a bit done, now that I think about it. Grocery shopping, farmers ... Mon, 29 Aug 2011 08:03:50 EST Stay the course! Had a good day today. It was an easy orientation day. I watched other people muddle through their lesson plans in the morning and the afternoon was an informational session on an online course application that I'm already familiar with.

I ate a power breakfast, I skipped the cookies and pasta salad and soda at our working lunch and went for the half pita filled with veggies, and I had a lovely balanced dinner. I was so low on calories by the end of the day, I had to eat a fourth me... Thu, 25 Aug 2011 22:34:20 EST If at first you dont succeed, youre running about average. Failing is hard.
Failing is not fun.
Failing is not the end of the world... as long as you get back up and keep trying to succeed.

My lesson plan was not good today. I ran out of time three-quarters of the way through part one of a four part lesson. My lesson made no sense as a result.

I learned a lot from my failure and I'm doing my best not to let it get me down. Most of the other lessons were really great, and I learned from the other TA's as a result.
... Wed, 24 Aug 2011 18:11:09 EST Tired but accomplished. Just a quick post to pat myself on the back. I need to go to sleep now at 1am, but I should sleep well because I think I created a solid lesson plan for tomorrow. In the morning I will be giving a mock lesson to my fellow TA's and my boss. I have been terrified about this, and I hope that my work was sufficient! Wish me luck and send me positive energy. Hopefully I knock this one outta the park!
300

Edit: As I'm laying here in bed, it occurred to me that my rest is,... Wed, 24 Aug 2011 01:06:48 EST Teaching is hard I don't wanna do it.

That is all. Mon, 22 Aug 2011 23:10:45 EST Pizza Rehab My 5 y/o is a pain when it comes to dinner. He will eat exactly three things. Spaghetti. Tacos. Pizza. That is all. Eggplant parm? Fuggedaboutit. Ratatouille? Puhleeze. Curried vegetable stew? Cha right. And my stuff is tasty. Really! I swear!

But tonight? VICTORY!!!

How did I do it? you ask in wonder. I'll tell you how. My new attack strategy: make one new meal every week. My manual: the kid-friendly vegetarian cookbook Peas and Thank You. Tonight's meal: Seitan Lettuce... Sun, 21 Aug 2011 22:12:15 EST BBQ temptation So I went to a BBQ today and there were very little healthy foodstuffs around. I thought about indulging, but then I remembered my concrete selfish goals and decided it wasn't worth it. I had some fruit and some wholewheat pasta salad. When I got home I had lots of calories left over so I made myself my own BBQ. Amy's Cheddar Veggie Burger with fat free cheese and bib lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, onions, French stone ground mustard and low fat mayo on a wholewheat sandwich thin. It was delicio... Sat, 20 Aug 2011 21:52:24 EST Will a new bike help me lose weight? Maybe not. Actually, I rode it home from D&Q today (7.35 miles in 40 min. There were stoplights, ok?), and it seems faster and easier to ride than my mountain bike, so there will probably be less calorie burn. But it's light and fun and easy to carry, so chances are I will be more likely to take it to the city and other places. Plus it's a single speed so I'm gonna have to mash some hills. And I plan to flip the hub and make it a fixie, which means if the wheels move, my legs move. No coastin... Fri, 19 Aug 2011 19:47:12 EST Why do I want to be thin? I have been reading The Spark and Chris says that you should be really specific about your goals. Why do you want what you want? How do you plan to get it? So I have been thinking about this a lot. Because losing weight is really important to me, yet I have been unsuccessful in the past. Even when I have lost weight, I have gained it back. Perhaps this lack of success is tied to a lack of planning and a lack of concrete goals. Sure it would be great to wear a sexy outfit to the club with my g... Thu, 18 Aug 2011 14:07:27 EST The BRUTAL truth. JUSTCIVVY motivated me to join her in posting progress pics. It takes guts and humility to post pics like these. Kudos to everyone who has ever been brave enough to do it! Here are mine from this morning. Looking at the pics as compared to last year when I was 5 lbs lighter, I can see my gut still remains. I didn't work to cover up my flabs with my bra and shorts in this year's picture, and I moved my arm out of the way so you could see my love handles :) But one thing I notice that's differe... Wed, 17 Aug 2011 09:56:52 EST Staying motivated! So... I excitedly pulled out the scale this morning. I had a stellar week with exercise and excellent eating habits. I drank more water, tracked my calories, and really amped up the healthful stuff. But when I stepped on the scale, I had gained a pound. (Actually two pounds if you count the number when I cheated midweek and checked my weight and I had dropped a pound, but I'm pretending that didn't happen) I know factors like water retention and such can affect the number on the scale, but it... Tue, 16 Aug 2011 09:46:42 EST Recommitting myself What a year. I lost a lot of weight last year (40 lbs) and then spent the last 7 months packing it back on. I was still cycling, though not as often, and I kept a lot of my healthy changes, but I left many of them in the dust. I tried to get back to it here and there, but my efforts were only half-hearted. I did add some other healthy changes, like going to the gym with a friend, drinking green tea instead of coffee, and continuing to cut back on my meat intake. But what really killed my effo... Mon, 15 Aug 2011 11:31:10 EST School starts tomorrow! Granted I haven't had much of a break. I took 3 classes this summer. This fall, I will be taking 3 lit classes (one of them a graduate class, because I'm awesome like that!) and 1 independent study on Truman Capote's life and works. In case you're wondering, yes, I am crazy. 4 lit classes will mean I will be reading non stop. Note to self: must figure out a way to read on the bike!

I made a commitment to myself to NOT drive to school a single time this semester. I will be riding th... Tue, 31 Aug 2010 12:52:45 EST First Month Re-Cap So, at the end of my first month, I have lost TWENTY POUNDS. I have learned the importance of keeping myself accountable on my goals, both big and small, especially when it comes to tracking food and fitness.

Using the goal tracker, I've been able to see how well I've been doing with all my little changes. For instance, I have only slipped up with smoking one time in the last month. I had one half of one cigarette, then I put it out and garbage disposaled the remaining cigs in the ... Mon, 30 Aug 2010 13:03:22 EST Enjoying the weather I just love fall. Bright blue skies, cozy sweaters, swirling leaves. We've had some fall-preview weather lately. It's been wonderful. I miss it now that the hot weather has returned. Saturday was great, though. I got up early, made a lovely breakfast for everyone, then rode 3miles to the farmers' market. I loaded up my bike with some amazing veggies.

My spoils, including organic cut flowers, fresh baked bread from an artisan who mills his own flour, giant zucchini, acorn squash, ch... Mon, 30 Aug 2010 07:50:00 EST A busy weekend! Friday night: the pool, with packed dinner for our neighbors and us. Sauteed chicken and sweet peppers in four-cheese tomato sauce over pasta.

Saturday: Bike to farmers market #1 at 8am, take family to farmers market #2 at 10am, healthy lunch, followed by cooking all day for dinner with grandparents. A veritable feast of organic free range chicken roasted with walnut oil and garlic, blue and red potatoes, baby carrots, and asian pears; thai long beans with red onions in olive oil; ... Mon, 23 Aug 2010 16:17:39 EST Another Farmers' Market?? I love the farmers' market. I am blessed to have not one, not two, but THREE within short riding distance. Every Saturday, I make myself a to-go cup of organic french press with soy and stevia, grab my reusable cooler bags and ride off to the blissful bounty of one of my farmers' markets. Heirloom vegetables in every color, fresh croissants, and exquisite flowers surround me as I say my hellos to my favorite vendors. I try to savor the experience and hold on to the feeling it brings for the r... Wed, 18 Aug 2010 23:29:27 EST A summer break! I just took my final exam in Earth Science last night and I'm pretty sure I got an "A" for the course. Thank you, study group! Now I have a lovely break until fall semester, which starts Sept 1st. I thought I would be blissfully energized to have my time to myself today, but so far, it has been a fairly lazy day. Sure, I walked the kid to school (1.46 mile round-trip), per usual, and I jogged most of the way back. But, my knees were bothering me, so I didn't push it. Also, my mood has been in... Wed, 18 Aug 2010 15:08:28 EST It doesn't get more local than this! My son and I went fruit picking today. Boy did it feel great to reach up and grab that perfect peach right from the tree. As the sun filtered through the leaves and danced on my face, I understood the importance of getting as close as possible to my food. We picked pears and peaches, and I got some grapes, corn, honey, and preserves from the market on the farm. The grapes were HANDS DOWN the best grapes I have ever tasted. We haven't had any grapes since we started buying local produce only. ... Fri, 13 Aug 2010 23:42:20 EST Motivate me! I've had a lot of successes lately. I've been doing really well with exercise and healthy eating. As a result, I've had lots of extra energy. However, I still can't seem to motivate myself to study and practice for school and classes. Especially guitar. Every week I put it off til the last minute. Then my lack of progress is really obvious when I go to my class. I spend the day feeling guilty and embarrassed because of this area of laziness. I don't get it. I am on top of all sorts of things ... Thu, 12 Aug 2010 13:12:36 EST Yet another small change... As some of you are aware, the most important part of MY program is my SMALL CHANGE goal. I make one small change for the better every week. Well, last week, my "small" change was joining And I just wanna say...

WOW.

Small? SparkPeople is ENORMOUS! And I dove in headfirst. I love everything about SparkPeople and by making this "small" change, the changes for the week have snowballed! I am now tracking my food daily, a chore that I have avoided for 6 years... Wed, 4 Aug 2010 11:46:07 EST Keeping momentum At the beginning of the summer semester, I started biking to school. The 11 mile round trip was fun and challenging. But, now my summer class is at night and biking to school at night is not safe at all. So I'm finding it difficult to keep up my routine. I still exercise daily, but I'm not getting in an 11 mile bike ride, that's for sure. I'm one of those people who needs to DO something for exercise. Walking or biking around aimlessly is just not for me. And workout videos? Blech. I do all m... Sun, 1 Aug 2010 15:36:26 EST
