Thu, 31 Oct 2013 09:34:11 EST After the Biopsy On Monday I got the cysts on my left breast aspirated/biopsied with just a local anesthetic. Damn, that hurt really bad. Don't get me wrong, I knew it wouldn't be pleasant but I didn't expect to hurt nearly as bad as it did. Here it is Friday and its still tender.

Anyway, good news is I got called Wednesday with the "negative for malignancy" results. That indeed was wonderful news. I got this call on my way home from the hospital after having a D&C. I had this done to help ... Fri, 17 May 2013 08:52:12 EST Before the Biopsy I got called to come back in for a recheck after my mammogram. After what seemed like dozens of re-squeezes and an ultrasound they found what they were looking for. Apparently I have a a cluster of cysts. I'm scheduled for a fine needle aspiration/biopsy on Monday.

So far I've only told my husband and my boss and now you. Mon, 4 Feb 2013 10:20:46 EST Just When I Thought I Had No Goals... I've been floundering around because I haven't pinned down any goals for this year. Fitness goals, that is. I had pretty much tabled everything because I knew it was going to be a crazy busy year.

Then out of the blue, wham. One of my spin students who has just recently embarked on her own weight loss journey approached me after class. It started as typical after class banter. Then she asks if I watched The Biggest Loser last night. I did, of course. (I used to relate to t... Tue, 22 Jan 2013 09:27:54 EST Not Ready to Change I think I wore myself out yesterday. I got called to sub the spin class just before mine. I did it and immediately following that I did my class. I had a crazy busy day and ran out of the office to teach my cardio class at the school. I zipped home and made dinner and packed my crap for work and the gym, then settled down to browse the sale flyers and veg out. I was so tired I went to bed about 9:15. I woke from a very unsettling nightmare at 10 and it took a bit to get back to sleep be... Wed, 16 Jan 2013 09:01:17 EST A Better Place I wish I would have figured out sooner what was bothering me, because after having posted last week's blog, my mindless munching stopped. I mean COMPLETELY. I'm hoping I'll see a response from the scale in the next week or two, but I'm not concerned about it. I already feel better.

My son came home last night for his birthday. He's 20 and yes I was 9 when I had him, LOL! Mon, 14 Jan 2013 09:19:30 EST Feeding the Pain I've been on a slow and steady backslide with my eating habits for months now. In cold hard numbers, I've gained 7 pounds in 7 months. One of my ugly old habits has returned. Eating for absolutely no reason. I'm not hungry at all, I'm just eating. I was having a hard time putting my finger on it. It's not mindless munching, since I am fully cognizant that I'm eating and as I'm eating, I'm asking myself why I'm doing it and I don't have the answer yet I can't stop.

Why it's ... Tue, 8 Jan 2013 21:16:58 EST Resolutioners The gym was busy today, pretty much as a expected. It's the new session and it's the new year and there are new faces. There was one new face in the crossfit class and a couple in the spin class that I take. Hopefully they are all still here two or three weeks from now.

Tomorrow morning I'll teach my first spin class of the new year. I got my roster and it's all returning students and I have a waiting list for my class. Pretty excited about that. I've got my playlist all read... Mon, 7 Jan 2013 10:33:53 EST Peanut Butter Meltaways and the End of the World My arch nemesis is sitting on my desk calling my name. That smooth, creamy chocolate covered, peanut butter filled candy called the Peanut Butter Meltaway. I know it's a trigger food for me and if I eat even this tiny, tiny one, I will eat relentlessly for the rest of the evening.

I have actually just frightened myself with a mental rationalization that surfaced from my former life of obesity. I wish I were a better writer because I'd love to fluently convey to you how rewarding it has been to transfer my love of fitness to others by becoming an instructor.

My spin class at the YMCA is at 6am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and has doubled in size with each new registration session. Wed, 31 Oct 2012 10:01:41 EST I'm not a Freak! I just finished reading a blog (won't say who's) and they commented how they woke up at 4 and couldn't get back to sleep so they went to the gym. I'm thinking, "good for you!" then she proceeds to comment that the gym opens at 5 am and there are already 14 "freaks" standing outside waiting for it to open. Really? Freaks? It didn't read like it was a joke.

Call me what you will, but my YMCA opens at 5 am and I am one of 8 "freaks" standing at the door waiting to get in.
... Fri, 12 Oct 2012 09:16:04 EST Fitness by Ruth Apparently that is what they are calling the class that I'll be teaching at the local elementary school. It's scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the school year. The first class is October 23rd. The organizer told me this morning that they have 15 faculty members interested already.

I'm a little nervous about it. Ok, maybe... So I get into Crossfit this morning. You never know what the workout is going to be which gets my blood pumping before I even get there. Mon, 20 Aug 2012 10:17:47 EST I Lost My Brother It's been 11 days since my brother woke up and decided life wasn't worth living anymore.

His escape has caused such devastation and pain to so many people. I've gotten through the heart wrenching grief finally. The unanswered "Why? Why? WHY?" still sneaks up on me. Last year I ran the 1/2 at JASR and met all the sparkers at the Rose Barn and for dinner afterward but then went home. I knew after just that little bit of time that I had to plan for the entire weekend the following year. So I did just that.

Janice (2wheeler) and I planned to room together and I register for the half again. Sun, 1 Apr 2012 17:58:50 EST Facebook Sux... Has Facebook really replaced good old fashioned communication? I logged onto Facebook yesterday, something I do only 3 or 4 times a week. What did I find? A status update from my only brother "Rest in peace Aunt Erma". It was posted 17 hours earlier. Really??? I have to find out from Facebook that my aunt has died. I am upset on so many levels. I have 28 aunts and uncles, but this one in particular was one of 3 that I can say I had a real relationship with. So I am sad, even though h... Mon, 5 Mar 2012 10:57:43 EST A Fitness Instructor? Me??? Yep, who'da thunk it? I'm a member of the local YMCA and I was asked by the Fitness Director if I would be interested in becoming a certified YMCA Fitness Instructor. I didn't even hesitate. Yes, of course I would!
We're in the process of building a new YMCA building and will be expanding their fitness classes and need instructors. Thu, 9 Feb 2012 07:53:23 EST 3 Minutes, Motivation and 5% Walking down the hall at work yesterday, I was greeted in the hall by a coworker. "You've really been able to maintain your weight loss. How do you find the motivation to keep going?" It was a passing comment and didn't require anything more than the blythe response I gave. But it did put life to a question that's been in my head for months now.

Really, once all the fanfare of smaller numbers on the scale and smaller numbers in your pants wears off, where does that motivation ... Tue, 20 Sep 2011 12:27:28 EST Celebration... Shout out to Sheenadee for reminding me that yesterday was my 3rd Sparkiversary. So, how did I celebrate? An 18 mle run in the 20 mph wind on muddy roads while encountering 6, count 'em SIX dogs at four different houses with their hackles raised running out in the road to "greet" me. Less than a month till marathon #2. Next week is the 20 miler. I will be doing it on the trail that I know is dog-free and an added bonus...hill free. Sun, 17 Apr 2011 21:40:55 EST Another Monday Man did that alarm go off early this morning. Monday's are my spin class and I have to get up at 5 to get there by 6. There are only 5 of us, there's a lot of chit-chatting and I pretty much have to just push myself but I enjoy the class. After the 45 minute class I run across to Riverfront park and run the mile down and back along the river and under the bridge.
It was pretty dark this morning already and starting to mist. But it felt good.

After my shower I headed t... Mon, 27 Sep 2010 22:26:58 EST Black Death Saturday is the Wild Woman Adventure Challenge that I've been training for. It's a 12 mile bike ride, 5 mile run followed by an obstacle course. There is the optional Black Death challenge that can be done in place of the obstacle course for those who are more competitive. Up until today there were no details about what the Black Death would entail so I wasn't sure what exactly to train for.

Well, if I choose to do the Black Death, after I finish my 12 mile bike and 5 mile run,... Wed, 8 Sep 2010 08:12:01 EST A Constant Battle You would think that after taking 11 months to lose 80 pounds and keeping it off for over 2 years, things would be easy. Well, they're not.

I struggle with portion control, mindless munching, poor food choices, and the "I deserve a treat" mentality.

My saving graces are the fact that I always have a goal race or event that I am training for that keeps me accountable for my workouts. I know I would workout even without something to train for, but having that event in mi... Wed, 25 Aug 2010 23:03:06 EST I am a Wild Woman!!! Geez, I can't believe I haven't blogged at all this summer. Yea, sure, I've been busy but not that busy!

Well, since my last blog, I've recovered from my injury, got my mileage back up to 7 miles on my long run followed immediately by an 11 mile bike ride. That's right, people I am in training again. This time for the Wild Woman Adventure Challenge. It's an 12 mile bike ride, 5 mile run and then an obstacle course with an optional "Black Death" Challenge. My partner in athl... Fri, 20 Aug 2010 15:33:41 EST My first mile I went to yoga last night and got all stretched out and noodly. When I got home, I laced up my dusty running shoes, strapped on the MP3 and headed out for my first "purposeful" walk in over 3 weeks. I was alert to every tweak and pressure, cautious with every step. It turned out to be quite an emotional little stroll. I mourned the fact that I usually ran this route but was joyful that I was walking at all without pain.

I was a little surprised at how both legs were really ... Fri, 28 May 2010 11:35:13 EST Taking it Back Control. That is what I'm taking back.

I had my doctor appointment yesterday, and the doc re-evaulated my leg, asked more specific questions and reviewed the MRI. Official word....Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome, not torn meniscus as first suspected. No surgery!!!!

Here's where the control comes back in. For more than 3 weeks no... Thu, 27 May 2010 14:01:12 EST Eating Disorder - Compulsive Exercise I was doing a little on-line research about my injury, figuring out what causes it, how to treat it and how to prevent it. In my wanderings I kept coming across the same references or related articles about a different kind of eating disorder. It's compulsive exercise.

Some of the symptoms are scheduling your life around exercise, missing work or leaving work early to workout, getting depressed if you can't workout, not taking rest/recovery days
working out for hours at a ... Tue, 25 May 2010 10:08:37 EST Can't see the forest for the trees... I have been in such a bad place the last few weeks. I've started so many blogs only to quit and delete them before posting. I'm struggling because I've lost something that's become a huge part of my life. And to some degree, I've let it define who I am. Part of me has been hesitant to blog about it because in the grand scheme of life it's just a small thing and others struggle with much bigger and more important problems. But this is my blog and my life.

What I have lost is my... Fri, 21 May 2010 11:05:59 EST My First Marathon (really long)

I left home mid-morning Saturday, headed into Pittsburgh, found a parking spot and checked in at the Omni William Penn which was the Host hotel for the marathon.

Beautiful place, but the hallways reminded me of the hotel on "The Shining". What do you think?

<img src=" Mon, 3 May 2010 13:49:39 EST It just doesn't matter. Lately I am finishing a lot of internal conversations with this statement. It took me so long my husband actually came looking for me and picked me up about mile from my car and drove me back to... Wed, 28 Apr 2010 11:48:22 EST How many wrongs make an.... idiot? This could also be filed under "What Not To Do When Training For A Marathon".

Let's see...where did I start going wrong? Probably Wednesday last week, when I did a spin class in the morning, ran 3 hard fast miles after work and then went to my friends' house to do "Insanity" cardio intervals. Then only taking one rest day before my 1/2 marathon race on Saturday. I guess that would be 2 mistakes.

My marathon training plan called for a 12 mile run as part of the taper. ... Wed, 21 Apr 2010 10:12:03 EST Am I there yet? I'm tired and I want this to be over. Saturday is my last 20 mile training run and then it's taper time. I just want this whole marathon thing to be over with. I knew going in this would be hard, (obviously). It's been an investment of time and energy and it's been a sacrifice at times. I honestly don't know what keeps me getting up in the morning and pushing, pushing, pushing.

I didn't run yesterday. That was one of only 2 training runs I missed since November. I am so ... Fri, 9 Apr 2010 08:44:30 EST Cook Forest 1/2 Marathon Race Report. Yesterday was the Cook Forest 1/2 Marathon and my first race of the year. My marathon training schedule had me doing a 12 mile training run so the timing was good and I was really looking forward to running with people. The day started really, really cold and I stressed a little about what to wear with a starting temp of 32° and projected to maybe get up to 45°. I opted for the cold-gear leggings and sleeveless wicking shirt under a windbreaker. Turned out to be a good choice and perfect... Sun, 28 Mar 2010 19:54:06 EST This is Personal What was I thinking???? There are 43 days till the marathon. I'm facing a 20 mile training run in the morning. I did 20 miles 2 weeks ago and although I should just be happy to have completed the distance, I considered the run a disaster and that seems to be overshadowing tomorrow's run.

I find I keep asking myself why am I doing this? No one is making me do it. I don't have to prove anything to anyone. Frankly I even doubt if anyone cares if do it or not. Judging by the fa... Fri, 19 Mar 2010 14:35:19 EST Don't Put Off Till Tomorrow... I was supposed to run 10 miles today. Usually on a long-run day I get up at 5 am. Today I overslept, a LOT. It was 8:45 when I dragged my tired butt out of bed. I can't imagine why I was so tired. I napped for over an hour last night and still went to bed at 11:00. It snowed again and the prospect of running 10 miles on the dreadmill was less than appealing. So instead I whipped up some pancakes, sausage and eggs. The smell of cooking sausage woke the rest of the family in a hurry and... Sat, 27 Feb 2010 18:44:18 EST It's All About Me I've enjoyed reading everyone else's survey so I figured I'd put mine out there.

When's the last time you ran? A couple hours ago - 5 miles on the treadmill

Do your jeans have rips, tears, and holes in them? Only one pair does, I bought them that way. My teens say they are "cool". Tue, 23 Feb 2010 21:32:09 EST It's Out! I mentioned a while back that I was going to be in a magazine. Well, it's out. Look for this magazine at WalMart.

And for those of you who don't have (or shop) at Wal-Mart here's the teeny-tiny writeup.

Mon, 22 Feb 2010 21:42:20 EST I never cease to amaze me. I stressed pretty much all week about today's 16 mile run. Strangely enough, it wasn't the distance that had me stressed. My calendar said 16 miles and by god come hell or high water 16 miles would be run today. The weather refused to cooperate. The 30+ inches of snow ensured that the roads would not be safe because the berms were non-existent. The high school track was completely inaccessible with the mountains of snow plowed from the parking lots. The thought of 3+ hours on the trea... Sat, 13 Feb 2010 18:05:11 EST Listen to Your Body or Else! Well, it's officially less than 90 days until the marathon. I can hardly believe January is over. This is the first in a long time that I can say that a winter month flew by, but it really did. What is usually a long, cold dreary stretch was filled with spin classes, kickboxing, strength training and, of course, running.

I did the last two weeks' long runs outside on the track at the high school. One was a 12 miler with a starting temp of 17°. I got about a mile in when I got... Mon, 1 Feb 2010 10:21:56 EST Can I Top This? What a stellar year for me. First and foremost is the fact that I've maintained my 80 pound weight loss, fluctuating between 109 and 113 at any given time.

I've logged over 21000 fitness minutes this year.

I've ran 15 races including nine 5ks, one 5 miler, two 10ks and three 1/2 marathons. Heck, I even placed in my age group in 5 of the 5k's.

How do I top that?

Well, for starters, if you've been following my blogs, you know I will be running a m... Wed, 30 Dec 2009 09:20:49 EST An Old Flame Re-ignites Passion I love to read. I used to read to the exclusion of all else. Well, except for mindlessly eating and drinking while I lay virtually motionless, completely engulfed in the story. Life got in the way and I haven't read like that in a long time. And reading like that now goes against the grain of my new lifestyle. I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I wouldn't be able to without sinking back into old, bad habits.

Until...I got a link to a free audio book download... Sun, 6 Dec 2009 13:18:41 EST Need Opinions First a little background:

It took me 11 months of diet and exercise to lose 80 pounds. I've maintained that weightloss for 18 months. I've beeing going to a kickboxing class 2 nights a week for about 9 month.

Recently two different pairs of ladies have started coming to kickboxing 1 night a week. Fri, 4 Dec 2009 08:31:05 EST Double-Up I can't believe it's been 5 weeks since my last blog. I had just finished my 1/2 marathon
in that blog so I'll try to pick up where I left off without getting too long. Sorry in
advance if I do.

I had my last 5k of the season on Oct. 25th. Hoping to capitalize on my fitness from 1/2 marathon training, I wanted to really push it for this race. Wed, 25 Nov 2009 11:12:41 EST Buffalo Creek 1/2 Marathon I just got back from my 1/2 marathon. It was soooo awesome. Let me start at the beginning which was actually last night.

I went to my son's football game last night. They are undefeated so far and this team was supposed to be their toughest competition. My son's team won 35-13. We hurried home so I could get straight to bed. It was like 10 pm. Before I could even get my clothes changed, my son texts me from the school to say the athletic trainer thinks he broke his hand. I... Sat, 17 Oct 2009 14:02:56 EST Running, Racing and Raining Oops, I didn't realize it's been 10 days since my last blog. So much for twice a week....

Well to catch up, I didn't get 12 miles like I'd hoped. I used to get me a 12 route and I don't know what happened. I ran it, and frankly I didn't feel nearly as tired as I expected considering it's been months since I'd done 12 miles. So I jumped in the car and drove it off to find out it was only 9.75. Figures. I did get called for the power outage crap about 4 times, bu... Mon, 28 Sep 2009 16:12:58 EST Scrounging for Change I went to kickboxing Monday night as planned. Except when I got there, I forgot I gave what cash I had to my son so he could get gas in his car and get a haircut. Here I am in the parking lot 5 min. before the class and the nearest ATM is 5 miles away which really didn't matter because I couldn't find my ATM card. I started shaking the change in my purse down to the corner to come up with $5. I had to use quarters, dimes and nickels but I had enough. Since the class moved to it's new loc... Fri, 18 Sep 2009 11:17:01 EST An old dog can learn new tricks... I went to my son's football game Friday night, they won again 39-2. They're now 2-0. It was a miserable drizzling rain the entire time. Splurged and started to snack on a pack of swedish fish until I realized they were 200 empty useless calories. Yea, I knew they were empty calories when I got them, but didn't realize that many. I ate half and gave the rest away.

Saturday I had a 5k race, the 5th in the 6 race series and I was determined to get 3rd place in my age group beca... Sun, 13 Sep 2009 20:37:43 EST I'm gonna pound someone!! My daughter's volleyball coach for starters, but I'll get to that.

Tuesday I got my miles in...on the dreadmill. I wanted to do speedwork at the track, but couldn't due to a soccer game on the field and it was too dark to run any of my regular outside routes. Remember, I live just a few miles outside of nowhere, so there aren't little street lights, just cows. It was about 7:30 when I started, no one had the a/c on in the house so it was 80 degrees and I opted for hills since I ... Fri, 11 Sep 2009 14:34:07 EST
