BOVEY63's SparkPeople Blog BOVEY63's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Death, Getting Healthier and Menopause This past Saturday was a full day. A friend and I went to a “Gathering of Family and Friends” to honor the life of a friend gone too soon.
39
Rich passed away at the age of 55. Rich was one of the nicest people I have known. He always had a smile, could make anyone laugh and had a heart of gold. He also had a demon in his life. That demon was alcohol. Officially, alcohol was not the cause of death but I believe alcohol was at the root of it.

I had been going... Fri, 2 Feb 2018 16:30:46 EST A Fun Day with Lots of Exercise This past Friday my youngest son (age 20) and I took off on a trip up Lake Superior’s North Shore Drive to Split Rock Lighthouse and Gooseberry Falls.

It was -25F when we woke up that morning, but temperatures were expected to climb to 7F by the time we reached our destination – approximately 130 miles. We packed warmer jackets and gloves, foot warmers to put in our boots, ice cleats, etc. After this trip, I highly recommend foot warmers.

We reached the lighthouse and f... Wed, 10 Jan 2018 16:23:13 EST Making 2018 the best it can be With too much time away from Sparking, eating healthy and regular exercise, I am making a commitment to getting back on right track.

After a scare with high blood pressure, and not wanting to continue on prescribed medicine, Mike researched natural ways to bring the numbers down to a normal range. He has done an amazing job, and his numbers are in the normal range (he checks his blood pressure a couple times a day now). Together, we are working on meal plans, exercise we can do tog... Fri, 29 Dec 2017 17:11:46 EST Things are looking up My last blog was pretty depressing. I was feeling down in the dumps, and needed to get it out of my system.

Thank you to all for the wonderfully supportive comments.

The past year has been so busy. A year ago this week, Mike and I moved into the house his parents built and where they raised their family. He inherited the house in February 2016 and we spent 10 months renovating nearly everything. Nothing had been updated since the 1970s, so carpets, tiling, cabinets, pane... Fri, 22 Dec 2017 16:59:32 EST How do I get back up on the track and learn to like myself? I wish I could figure out why I can’t seem to get back on track with healthy eating and exercise.

Life, overall is very good right now. I am going on five years with a man who loves me for me; and for the first time in my life, my relationship continues to grow rather than wane as time goes by. With Mike I have found that home is not a building, but rather any place we are together.

My sons are doing well. The oldest is working in his chosen field, traveling throughout... Wed, 15 Nov 2017 14:45:42 EST My Revelation Upon my return to Spark, I reached out to many friends and came to a revelation. Spark is such a big part of the happiness I have found, and yet I somehow let spark slip away.
I joined Spark in May 2009, a time when I was at my lowest point both mentally and physically. I had left my marriage in November 2008 and moved into my own home. Questions and uncertainties filled my days. Did I do the right thing for me, for my boys, for my family, etc.?
Sometime during 2012 I was finally fe... Fri, 19 Feb 2016 17:25:00 EST I have been away too long Good Afternoon Spark Friends,

It has been a long time since I have posted a blog, or really done any activity on Spark. After a few friends reached out to me, I realized how much I miss them and others I have gotten to know over the past several years.

I have been extremely busy, but that is not a good excuse. It just seems that after being away for a month or two, and then three or four, I stayed away. Maybe guilt for not being there for others, that I had fallen pretty... Wed, 10 Feb 2016 16:35:07 EST Where does the time go? I knew it had been a long time since I last blogged, but I really didn’t think it has been almost six weeks.

Where did those six weeks go?

The second week of May was an eventful one – my oldest son graduated from college that Friday. Mike, my youngest son Troy and I drove to the ceremony (only a little over an hour away), and I knew I was in emotional trouble when just seeing his name in the program brought tears to my eyes. It was a nice, although quite long, ceremony ... Fri, 19 Jun 2015 17:34:09 EST Catching up and trying to Re-Spark Hello fellow Sparkers! It has been a long time since I have written anything – I believe the longest absence since joining May 26, 2009.

Life and work are going very well, but the healthy lifestyle not so much.

Mike and I are still very much in love, and although there are times he can test my patience, I wouldn’t trade our life together for anything.

My boys are going awesome! Tyler will graduate with a double major – Geographical Information Systems and B... Fri, 1 May 2015 17:34:28 EST A short Hello Just a short hello to say that I am doing well, and keeping so very busy.

Things are gearing up for the summer months at work, meaning a lot of plant and seed ordering, making sure all equipment is in running order and it is calving season - 13 born already, including a set of twins! I have been taking lots of pictures and just enjoying being able to watch them frolic about. On top of everything else, I was responsible for setting up of the meal for a meeting and planning of a staf... Fri, 6 Mar 2015 17:27:06 EST Two months since my last blog I don’t think I have gone this long without blogging since joining SP back in May 2009. I could blame it on the holidays, but mine were actually pretty quiet this year. I could blame it on work, but with the hiring of an Administration Assistant and account in our department, things have eased tremendously. I have been able to work on projects that had been pushed to the back burner such as developing a weekly office newsletter, working with the boss on technology upgrades and remodeling of o... Thu, 8 Jan 2015 17:27:37 EST Things are looking up

In the 15 days since my last blog, things are looking brighter and I am once again feeling like my usual optimistic self.

I am still grieving the loss of my friend Ellen, worrying about my mom and have yet to communicate with my nephew, my roof is still unfinished and winter is nearing, but I am trying to focus on the positives.

I was so lucky to have Ellen as a friend and have many treasured... Tue, 4 Nov 2014 14:37:01 EST My Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day No, it’s not a comedy like the Alexander movie that is currently showing. Sunday was one of my worst days in a very long time.

It started out okay – coffee and conversation with Mike, a little house cleaning and laundry.

In the early afternoon I went to see the couple who operated the daycare my oldest son attended. Over the years they have become a second set of parents to me, grandparents to my sons (who still call them Grandma and Grandpa) and their six children anoth... Tue, 21 Oct 2014 17:25:35 EST Trying to enjoy fall while dealing with Mom’s anxiety Fall is my favorite time of the year – leaves changing colors, cooler temps and no mosquitoes. I can sit on the deck in the morning, enjoying a cup of coffee or in the evening with a glass of wine or water and my favorite guys. The air smells amazing, the Northern Lights put on a show some evenings and a huge harvest moon is always a welcome sight.

I had planned to accomplish so much outside this past weekend – emptying flower pots, cutting back perennials, and putting up my fall d... Tue, 30 Sep 2014 15:44:58 EST Allergies, work reclassification and life in general This week has found me plagued with allergies. I am allergic to dust mites and they were out in full force after we had to turn on the furnace when temperatures dipped into the 30s and reached high in the upper 40s and low 50s. Dust that had settled in the vents all summer long was blown all over the house and I am certain that every mite found its way to my eyes, nose and throat.

I was miserable throughout the weekend and stayed home from work Monday. I am feeling much better toda... Fri, 19 Sep 2014 17:17:34 EST Crazy days It has been quite a while since I blogged or been able to correspond much with my Spark Family. Summer is the busiest time at work, and there has been a lot going on in my personal life too.

This afternoon we are holding an open house in our horticulture department. There will be wagon tours, bus tours to the apple orchard and grape high tunnel, and guest speakers in entomology and tree planting in high tunnels. It is a perfect day to be outside (for us Minnesotans anyway) with tem... Wed, 27 Aug 2014 13:26:28 EST A short update It has been a while since I blogged. My time has been full of family, work at home and insanity at work.

Last week I took vacation Monday-Wednesday to spend with Mike’s son, DIL and two grandsons (ages 1 & 3), who were visiting from Illinois. We had a wonderful, although way to short, time together. The boys are so adorable and once again brought some of my heart back home with them. They informed us that Mike will be a grandpa for the third time in January. Sure wish we lived clos... Fri, 1 Aug 2014 17:31:10 EST It's no wonder girls and women feel fat. Several times over the past few days I have come across the following story online.

'Plus-sized' model Robyn Lawley posts unedited, makeup-free bikini selfies

My question is: "How the heck is she considered 'plus sized'? It's no wonder girls and women are starving themselves. Sat, 26 Jul 2014 14:06:10 EST Random pictures and one for CODEMAULER I forgot to add a picture for my Spark friend CODEMAULER yesterday so here it is plus a few random ones from my picture folder.

CODEMAULER: I can picture you and the hubster camping in this tent!

Blueberries starting to ripen at work.

A favorit... Fri, 18 Jul 2014 12:11:39 EST Catching up with old friends and family, fun and possible promotion at work, and roof troubles I am finding hard to believe that summer is about half over (according to my son’s school schedule anyway). It feels like only yesterday we were still shivering in the cold temperatures. But wait a minute – it did get down into the lower 40F degrees the other night. And, no I did not turn on the furnace!

Catching up with friends and family is common this time of the year. My hometown always holds a big 4th of July celebration, and reunions are typically planned around it. A cousin,... Thu, 17 Jul 2014 17:10:11 EST Wonderful weekend The weather didn’t cooperate as well as I had hoped this past weekend, but it sure didn’t dampen the wonderful time I had. In fact, my youngest son and I embraced it and had a fun experience yesterday.

Mike, my son Troy and I spent a quiet Friday evening at home – light, easy dinner after work followed by a movie and early bedtime.

Mike had a meeting and then mowing at his mom’s, and Troy had to work until 3 p.m. on Saturday. I caught up with some friends via the phone, ... Mon, 23 Jun 2014 16:25:03 EST Sanity may be on its way I almost hate to jinx things, but it finally feels like a little sanity may be coming my way. My phone rang at 6:45 a.m. on a Saturday morning (nearly two weeks ago). Mike was already up and came in to see what the call was about. It was the hospital calling to say my mom had been brought in by ambulance at 3:30 a.m. with another anxiety attack – she had gone in with one just two days before. He lay down beside me, and I told him that he was my sanity these days, but then I said “No, Sandy (a... Fri, 20 Jun 2014 17:19:39 EST A living nightmare – ACCOUNTING! As a student I liked, and was good at math, but that certainly didn’t mean I was destined to become an accountant. I preferred art, photography and writing so I chose to pursue a career in Graphic Communications. After earning my degree, I was hired at a local photography studio to print graduation, wedding and other professional photos, waitressed for a few years, and then was hired as a graphic artist at my hometown newspaper. After three years, I became the editor and a year later the publ... Fri, 30 May 2014 17:54:12 EST Sparking before doing a deposit Sparking before doing a deposit

I am on my lunch break at work and realized this may be the only time I have to write a long-overdue blog.

Life continues to be a rollercoaster ride – high, lows, moving too fast and sometimes crashing to a stop. Overall, though, the ride has been quite good.

I may have said it before, but I have definitely had my fill of funerals – went to one last Friday and have another tomorrow. I think that makes about 17 since April 2012. ... Fri, 23 May 2014 14:52:49 EST Life in the Super Fast Lane I am finally getting the chance to sit down and do some Sparking. Life has been so hectic the past few weeks, and tonight I am home alone for a while - so now taking some "me" time.

What I have been up to:
1. Working on an auction at work (being held this Friday and Saturday), plus all the every day work that needs to get done. A co-worker and I also sorted through boxes of papers and took a pickup truck load to be shred.
2. Two weekends of taking pictures of children wit... Wed, 23 Apr 2014 20:42:09 EST Flashlight tour, a cold and sprained ankle This past Saturday a friend and I travelled to Duluth (yes, I go there whenever possible) and went on a Flashlight Tour of Glensheen (Congdon) Mansion (if you want more information about Glensheen, go online to We have been on several tours of the mansion and the grounds over the years. The Flashlight Tour was introduced this month and the schedule was limited – with most spots reserved quickly.

The tour was led by a guide and usher (who followed behind the grou... Thu, 27 Mar 2014 16:13:25 EST Trying to overcome insults from the past “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” How many times did we say these words in our childhood and try to convince ourselves that we really did believe them?

I did my best trying to bury hurtful words and keep my chin up. Years later, I now see the negative affect those words have had in my life. In this blog, I will focus on words in regards to my weight.

Like most children, I had some baby fat, shed some and kept some. Neither the school ... Mon, 17 Mar 2014 17:11:25 EST Calving time at work As a reminder, I work in the administration department at a research and outreach center. Several areas of research are conducted here - Agronomy, Animal Science, Biotechnology. Forestry, Forest Biology, Horticulture and Wild Rice.

Public awareness is a big part of my job - designing brochures, website updating, news articles, etc. This also means that I get paid to partake in one of my most favorite hobbies - photography. With calving season beginning a couple weeks ago, calves ar... Wed, 12 Mar 2014 17:30:34 EST Exploring Lake Superior's Ice Caves After seeing several pictures of Lake Superior's Ice Caves posted on friends' facebook pages, I knew I had to see them. My youngest son was just as enthusiastic about them, so we set out yesterday morning for the 3-hour drive to Apostle Island on the Wisconsin side of Lake Superior.

We arrived about 2 p.m., took a shuttle to end of the entrance road and walked about two blocks to the lake. Once on the lake, there was a 1.1 miles walk (more like a snow hike) to the Ice Caves. Temper... Mon, 10 Mar 2014 17:00:52 EST Winter Beauty Mother Nature may have been brutal this winter, and yet she has left so much beauty. The following pictures are from Lake Superior. I can't take credit for them - they were shared by friends on facebook. I am hoping to get there soon and see it for myself.

This is a picture of the Great Lakes taken from space by NASA, showing the astonishing extent of the ice cover. In keeping with this promise, I am sharing pictures from friends' facebook pages.

Outside a friend's door last night.

Looking out a girlfriend's living room window.

Yes, there ... Fri, 21 Feb 2014 13:11:48 EST Done whining about the weather Over the past few months I have complained a lot about the weather. It’s definitely not great here today, but I am okay with that.

Have I gone crazy or did my brain finally freeze? No (well crazy maybe, but not due to the weather).
100
The reason I am no longer going to complain is that so many areas in our country are getting blasted with freezing rain and heavy, wet snow – areas that are not accustomed to it.

Yes, Minnesota has gone through a re... Thu, 13 Feb 2014 13:45:23 EST Fun and Inspiring I was browsing through facebook on my break and came across a funny weight loss picture and an inspirational one. Fri, 24 Jan 2014 17:43:04 EST My Spark is a little brighter First of all I want to than everyone for the awesome comments and support on my last blog. You are amazing!!!
223 220 247 223
Yesterday I was texting with a Spark Friend and she has been trying to get the Spark burning bright again too. We realized that we have put ourselves on the back burner once again and need to put ourselves back in front. Having grown up being told to always put others first, this isn't always easy for me. But I... Thu, 23 Jan 2014 17:22:42 EST Trying to relocate my Spark I know it’s there – somewhere buried within. It hasn’t gone out completely – there I days I feel a slight burn. For the first two plus years it was shining brightly, then fizzled a little when my job was reduced to part time, and over the past year and a half it seems as though it has gone into hiding. What puzzles me most is that it burned more brightly when I was at my lowest point. Now that I am happier than I have been in a very long time, it is barely visible.

I will be on the... Fri, 27 Dec 2013 17:11:16 EST Winter has arrived I knew it would come. I just didn't know it would start with such a vengeance!

Winter is most definitely here. When I left for work Tuesday morning, it was a pretty much normal December day - cool, a little snow on the ground. By the afternoon a mix of snow and freezing drizzle had started. I went from work to help a friend paint winter scenery for display at a local landmark. It was 10 p.m. when I was on the road home. The roads weren't too bad.

The weather deteriorated... Thu, 5 Dec 2013 17:36:03 EST Family time The past week has been full of wonderful family time.

Friday my oldest son and I drove to St. Paul to see Elton John in concert, and we had such a great time. We talked the entire 3.5 hour trip down, he took me out to an Italian restaurant for dinner, Elton was AWESOME and we talked all the way back home - arriving at 2:30 a.m. It was such a special time with my son and I will cherish it always!

Tyler and... Wed, 27 Nov 2013 17:27:55 EST A quick hello I have been absent from SP since last Friday, due to a very busy schedule.

It is supposed to be our slow time at work but being one person short in our department (typically three people) and our boss being here on a part-time basis (he is director of two facilities) the work never seems to end. Our plan was to leave Thursday, visit his son, daughter-in-law and two grandsons Friday in Illinois, attend my niece’s wedding on Saturday in Ohio and head back to Minnesota Sunday.

Thursday we drove the 80 miles to Superior and headed south through Wisconsin. I have determined that Wisconsin could be called the “3-Cs State” – corn, cows and cheese! It was a beautiful drive. We arrived in Illinois lat... Thu, 19 Sep 2013 16:46:41 EST Horticulture Day, a funeral and a wedding I haven’t been present on Spark much until today, and sure hope I was able to catch up with most of you. Work and life have kept me pretty darn busy and I am hoping for a relatively quiet weekend.

Wednesday, August 28 was out annual Horticulture Day at work. This is a day set aside for the public to stop by and take tours of our gardens and apple orchard. It takes months of planning and keeping fingers crossed that Mother Nature cooperates - not only that day but throughout the gro... Fri, 6 Sep 2013 16:46:12 EST Playing catch up I am trying to play catch up with my Sparking today, and it looks like you will get a short blog with lots of pictures.

Work has been very busy, which is typical during the summer months due to much of our research being outdoors. In Minnesota this means "Strike while the snow is gone!" Next week is our annual Horticulture Day where the public is invited to go on tours and ask questions from staff, Horticulture researchers and professors, and master gardeners. This means a lot of b... Mon, 19 Aug 2013 17:35:59 EST Happy Busy The title says it all - I am happy and busy.

So often I begin writing a blog only to be interrupted by one thing or another. I am writing this one from work (Ssshhh, don't tell anyone LOL!). It is very quiet and most of the staff has left early to get an early start to the weekend. I am one of two people who has to stay until the automatic locks go on, and the other person is one of those who left early. Due to the quiet, I have accomplished a lot and am now able to take a little ... Fri, 2 Aug 2013 17:24:24 EST Love, family, friends and gardening The title pretty much describes my life, aside from work, these days. Love continues to blossom along with the flowers, shrubs and trees that now decorate my yard and deck; and I have been able to spend quite a bit of time with family and friends. I am finding the motivation to continue my journey to a healthy body and mind; as well as improving my surroundings by doing little improvements over time.

My relationship with Mike has brought me more love and joy than I have ever known ...
