BLESSEDLOSER's SparkPeople Blog BLESSEDLOSER's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Notes for my 16-year-old self Karen, if you only knew what lay ahead for you, I know you would be much more confident! Know that God is walking with you every step of the way no matter what you do, and is ready for you to turn to Him for comfort, guidance, and security. You are healthy and at a good weight now, but the cigarettes and other bad choices have got to go! Find activities you enjoy that keep you moving, and be mindful of what you put in your mouth. Don't let Mom's legacy of a bad relationship with food be yo... Fri, 25 Jan 2013 18:18:35 EST BLC Summer Break Plan Since I am about to start a major renovation of my kitchen, I've been hesitant to post a plan, due to the uncertainty of how much time I'll have to work out (it's been very, very limited as I've been preparing to pack up 4 rooms worth of STUFF) or what I'll be able to cook with the limited prep area and tools that I'll have available. However, failing to plan means planning to fail, so here's what I'm going to endeavor to do to protect myself from falling into the trap that I did during the ... Mon, 16 Jul 2012 19:24:00 EST Freggie Dare Veggie Recipe #1: Mock Guacamole As promised in my BINGO blackout post, here is my recipe for Mock Guac, the perfect recipe for those who love guacamole (but not the fat), and/or hate asparagus (but want to check off that box on the BINGO card!):

24 asparagus spears, trimmed and halved (or try canned asparagus, but fresh is best!)
1/2 cup salsa
1 Tbsp cilantro leaves (optional)
2 garlic cloves
1 Tbsp lemon juice
Dash of salt
1/2 cup fat free ricotta (as corrected)
4 scallions, th... Sat, 19 May 2012 14:02:47 EST BLC19 S.M.A.R.T. Plan I've never been good at coming up with good plans that would fit the "S.M.A.R.T." parameters (at least that I've been able to stick to), but in the interest of getting full points for this weekend's challenge, here is my shot at a plan that I should be able to succeed at:

1. Track my food daily, making an effort to stay in range and control sweets, and follow the Herbalife plan that my DS has started me on
2. Drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day
3. Work towards ... Mon, 30 Apr 2012 14:22:17 EST 2012: Transformation Time As part of my BLC-18 team's weekend challenge that ends tonight, I'm offering this blog to discuss my transformation in health/fitness/wellness.

I've been struggling with my weight for years, especially recently as I've hit menopause, have thyroid issues, and now am dealing with arthritis. I've even been on SP before, but never joined actively in any teams, and kept falling off the wagon as far as tracking my nutrition and fitness. But my DS Ferne (1TRULYBLESSED) inspired me to t... Mon, 30 Jan 2012 21:58:36 EST Recovering From My First Stumble of the Year I've been really pumped about getting a fresh start on SP in 2012, keeping up with the January Jumpstart Challenge, and joining a BLC-18 group next week. I've been tracking my food and fitness carefully, and have been very conscious of everything I'm doing in light of my goals to get in shape.

Then I made a dumb mistake. I stayed up too late last night. My daughter came home very late to visit while I was on the phone with my sister-in-law, and by the time I got off the phone, s... Wed, 4 Jan 2012 17:22:48 EST Keeping Things In Perspective So, my official WI yesterday yielded a .8 weight gain :-( -- Not exactly what I was hoping for only a couple of weeks into my renewed Spark journey. However, with my thyroid issues and menopause wreaking havoc over the last several years, I can't say I'm terribly surprised. I'm hoping that my activity on SP will help me to persevere in spite of the difficulties I have getting the weight off, and to develop better habits along the way.

The other thing that is leaving me philosoph... Tue, 5 Jul 2011 15:57:16 EST Variety is Helping I've had a good variety of workouts this week, and I think it's been a good thing for my body. Since starting back on SP almost two weeks ago, I've been getting in 3 or more interval-style 3-mile walk/runs each week. I've also started doing water aerobics, which is a nice antidote to the heavy pounding on the joints that the jogging does (though I still find other spots that start aching after a session in the water!).

Yesterday I also worked out with my trainer, who is always ch... Sat, 2 Jul 2011 00:56:46 EST Staying Upbeat After a real upbeat day yesterday (I got the dream job!), this morning I woke up with a major migraine, and felt awful all day long. Thank goodness my new job involves working part-time hours at home! I managed to get the little bit of work done that I needed to do, but never got any errands done. I just kind of laid low, and never did even get any kind of workout in. However, due to my queasiness most of the day, I didn't eat a whole lot, and stuck with pretty healthy, bland stuff.
... Thu, 30 Jun 2011 00:57:20 EST Adapting to Life's Curveballs What a rollercoaster ride today! I got up, showered for my interview, only to get out of the shower and find out that my interview had to be postponed -- maybe for later in the day, maybe for tomorrow. So I adjusted by doing my usual morning 3-mile run/walk instead, even though I had just showered (after DH calmly pointed out that it IS possible to run after showering!). Next, I weighed in (officially today), and actually was down exactly 2 lbs. my first week -- woo hoo! Wrote some emails... Mon, 27 Jun 2011 23:56:39 EST Day of Rest -- Good for the Soul! Today I took it easy. Went to church, had lunch, read the paper, talked to a friend about our Guatemala trip, and watched some tv while I worked on decorating some Christmas bags for our Prison Ministry (yes, we have to work on this in the summer in order to have the bags ready to fill up come December!). What a nice way to spend the Lord's day!

I kept up with my tracking (before eating, yeay me!), but am still feeling hungry after hitting the upper end of my calorie range (okay,... Mon, 27 Jun 2011 00:20:27 EST Baby Steps You may have noticed that my SparkPage shows only a 10-lb weight loss goal. Trust me, I have a lot more to go than 10 lbs! One of the things I decided after reading the Spark was that I needed to break down my goals into smaller, more readily achievable "baby" steps. Since I'm leaving for a mission trip to Guatemala on Aug. 3rd, I decided that 10 lbs by Aug. 3rd would be an achievable goal that would keep me going during these first couple of months of my fresh start on SP. So far so good... Sat, 25 Jun 2011 17:54:02 EST Feeling Positive Today! No, I haven't gotten organized yet (still haven't touched my office cleanup like I had planned) , but I had an excellent telephone interview yesterday afternoon, and met with the employment agency today, which also was an excellent experience. I have an in-person interview with this potential employer on Monday morning, and I'm praying that this is going to work out!

After 6 months of working for someone who was always criticizing, demanding, swearing, and generally making like mis... Fri, 24 Jun 2011 21:21:59 EST Getting my life organized I had a lot to get done today, but only accomplished a small portion of it. It's funny how working out can end up taking up the whole morning! I'm in the middle of a job hunt, so that took up a good chunk of my day -- but at least there was some promising movement in that area. Then there was the time spent on SP! However, between those three activities (plus reading the paper, preparing and eating meals, and choir practice), I never did get to the grocery store, and didn't even get start... Thu, 23 Jun 2011 01:11:51 EST Getting out of my head, and onto SparkPeople Probably my biggest challenge in succeeding in this fresh start that I've embarked on is to realize that I can't do this on my own. The ongoing commentary going on inside my head during all these years of trying to lose weight on my own has always dragged me down. I've always been intensely private when it comes to online postings, but seeing my sister's success after 3 months of actively blogging and participating in Spark teams has inspired me to be brave and step out into this semi-publi... Tue, 21 Jun 2011 22:54:35 EST Making a Fresh Start Today I am taking the plunge, re-starting on SP with a new dedication after 4 years of occasional dabbling. I'm at a turning point in my life (suddenly looking for a new job), and decided this would be a good time to re-evaluate my approach to my health while I'm re-evaluating other areas of my life.

I successfully completed Day 1 by meeting all of my self-set short-term daily goals (except for getting to bed by 11:30!). I tracked my food (and kept almost within budget!); walked/j... Tue, 21 Jun 2011 00:40:17 EST
