While there wasn't that much climbing in the 100.65 miles (1,959), the wind was a real challenge and of course the heat topped out at106 degrees farenheit. I couldn't help but see the SAG wagons full of riders who didn't want to continue. It's too bad. It appears that tomorrow's ride will go along with its title since it's forecasted to be in the 100's.This will be my 8th time doing the ride. It is my favorite ride simply because of its magnitude and of course, the challenge that it offers those crazy enough to try it. While many start, only "the Studs" complete it. Boy, hit's been a very busy and super enjoyable time. First odd, I did RAGBRAI and met up with some friends and made some new ones along the way. After 7 days of cycling, I did 480+ miles. While washing the tires I noticed a large slash on the rear tire. Considering that we've ridden over 4,000 miles on these tires, I went ahead and retired these puppies. I'm at the bottom of the hill and turning around to what is an uphill return home. It is at that point that I realize where the noise was coming from. The wires that controls my rear derailleur shifting has broken off. This means that I'm at the most challenging gear with no chance of being able to shift. Next, I was on the bike suffering on the hills. Did 2200' of climbing in 3.5 hours, followed by some resistance training. In the afternoon, gave the doggies a long 36 minute walk. All told, 4.5+ hours of fitness. The nutrition was right on. With the amount of exercise, the program allowed me 4,000+ calories. I consumed way less than that. So, over all, a magnificent day.
