BILL60's SparkPeople Blog BILL60's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Results So, I did the Hotter"NHell 100 today and amazed myself at how well I did. While there wasn't that much climbing in the 100.65 miles (1,959), the wind was a real challenge and of course the heat topped out at106 degrees farenheit. I couldn't help but see the SAG wagons full of riders who didn't want to continue. It's too bad. Anyway, I hung tough and made Momma proud,
Sat, 23 Aug 2014 18:28:11 EST Hotter than Hell 100 Arrived at Wichita Falls, TX, yesterday in preparation for this year's HHH 100. It appears that tomorrow's ride will go along with its title since it's forecasted to be in the 100's.This will be my 8th time doing the ride. It is my favorite ride simply because of its magnitude and of course, the challenge that it offers those crazy enough to try it. While many start, only "the Studs" complete it. I consider myself one of those studs (LOL). HOOAAA!! Fri, 22 Aug 2014 11:00:22 EST Accountability Yesterday was the kind of day I'd like to have each and every day. The exercise was challenging and the nutrition was right on. On target for a super week. HOOAAA!! Thu, 14 Aug 2014 08:33:06 EST Accountability After 7 days and 480+ miles of cycling, as part of RAGBRAI, and 7 days of vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, I'm back to my normal days of cycling, training the dogs, watching my food intake, and loving life. Looking forward to my 9th "Hotter than Hell 10" bike ride in 2 weeks. HOOAAA!! Wed, 13 Aug 2014 07:51:06 EST I'm Back It's been a while since my last post. Boy, hit's been a very busy and super enjoyable time. First odd, I did RAGBRAI and met up with some friends and made some new ones along the way. After 7 days of cycling, I did 480+ miles. Day number 6 was the toughest ride OI had ever done. It was pouring down rain during the first 50 miles , with wind and hills added in. Saw many folks SAG in, but I was very determined not to allow the conditions to have me give in. After the ride, I visited family and ... Sun, 10 Aug 2014 08:49:27 EST Accountability Sure was a nice 4th of July weekend. Was able to enjoy it with my granddaughters and had a ball. Of course, after handing them off to the Moms I had to lay down and nap for 1.5 hours. No cycling while they were with us, but would not have been able to ride anyway. One of my tires had acrack and the new spares that I had saved for social rides, require brake adjustment. So, today I'll take care of that and do a hot afternoon ride. Hope that my Buds had a great weekend. HOOAAA!! Mon, 7 Jul 2014 07:12:54 EST Accountability June was a good month overall. However, for july I'm going to tone SPARkPEOPLE down a bit. I believe I'm spending way too much time getting callouses on my butt. So, the hope is to get more reading done and more household activities out of the way. Hang tough. HOOAAA!! Tue, 1 Jul 2014 06:39:20 EST Acountability For those that haven't kept up with my rambling, I'll share the fact that my Australian puppy (20 months) and I have been agility training since February. We go once weekly to a trainer and learn a bit more about the intricacies of the sport. On Thursday the 20' tunnel that I ordered arrived. Yesterday was the ist time that Blue had tried it. Between yesterday and today he's made amazing progress. I am really proud of him. Me, however, am having a tough time staying up with him. We have 8 jum... Sun, 29 Jun 2014 09:27:43 EST Accountability Nature is really getting even with me. Again, she pored on me. Never again will I say or allude to having gotten over on nature. Nonetheless, a very nice ride . The nutrition was good. I even had my Friday special, a Dirty Martini. Life is definitely good. HOOAAA!! Sat, 28 Jun 2014 19:21:40 EST Accountabiliy The other day I was so proud of myself for exercising when it looked like a downpour was coming in. Yesterday was much the same way so, I changed the duration of my ride and increased the intensity by doing hill intervals. Everything was going great until 3 miles from the end. It seemed that the sky wanted to get even with me for getting over the other day. It poured on me, but it felt good and refreshing. I still feel that life is good. HOOAAA!! Fri, 27 Jun 2014 07:42:15 EST Accountability Had a nice ride, but was a bit naughty with the nutrition. Some foods cause me great pleasure and at the same time, much consternation. Anyway, I'm a pride example of work in progress. Will continue to attempt to moderate, moderate, and moderate. HOOAAA!! Thu, 26 Jun 2014 21:16:32 EST Accountability The winds were high and the clouds were real dark. It looked like a real downpour. Was going to cancel my ride, but figured some miles are better than none. So I ventured out, but stayed close to home. After 5 miles it looked real threatening. After 15 miles, still very threatening. After 20 miles, the skies were clear and I was able to finish my planned duration. There is something about hanging tough. While neighbors kept telling me to get off the road. I just kept on trucking. Towards the ... Wed, 25 Jun 2014 08:24:40 EST Accountability A good day both physically and nutritionally. Worked out hard and was careful with what I ate. On the home front, my 20-year old college student was hired at a local Research Company, for the summer. He'll be making $16 an hour. Additionally, he's helping a NASA contractor and makes bunches of $$ there, as well. He's studying to be an electrical engineer and is gaining much experience along the way and earning some $$. Happy to say that he'd better not ask for spending or gasoline money durin... Tue, 24 Jun 2014 20:09:31 EST Accountability Sundays are recovery days for me. I go slow and short on my rides and try to reflect on the week's happening. So, the ride was nice and slow, with no rush at all. The day ended up being pretty awesome as the wife and I went to our favorite restaurant and enjoyed ourselves immensely. Overall, it was a great week and I'm looking forward to an even better week. HOOAAA!! Mon, 23 Jun 2014 08:03:13 EST Accountability It was hot. It was hilly. It was a long ride and we hung tough and completed almost 4 hours in the saddle. After a long rest, went out with the doggies for a 40-minute walk. Boy did I ever nap. It was a challenging yet rewarding fitness day. HOOAAA!! Sun, 22 Jun 2014 13:32:16 EST Accountability The ride was good. The resistance exercises challenging. But what made the day was the steak and potatoes that my son and I had for dinner. Killer end to a good day. HOOAAA!! Sat, 21 Jun 2014 15:52:55 EST Accountability Did all that I was supposed to do and then some. Starting to wake up way earlier than normal. Today I woke up at 3:00AM, wide awake. That afternoon nap will be a must today. HOOAAA!! Thu, 19 Jun 2014 07:45:45 EST Accountability The ride was not nearly as demanding as Monday. Got the bike fixed and rode it with a nice smile on my face. The shifting was right on. After riding, I gave the bike a thorough cleaning. While washing the tires I noticed a large slash on the rear tire. Considering that we've ridden over 4,000 miles on these tires, I went ahead and retired these puppies. So, life continues to be good all around. HOOAAA!! Wed, 18 Jun 2014 08:24:58 EST Accoutability So, I'm almost half way into my ride when I hear a funny sound coming from my bike. I'm at the bottom of the hill and turning around to what is an uphill return home. It is at that point that I realize where the noise was coming from. The wires that controls my rear derailleur shifting has broken off. This means that I'm at the most challenging gear with no chance of being able to shift. So, I end up having a very challenging uphill ride. My legs were jelly. But it's all good. HOOAAA!! Tue, 17 Jun 2014 08:28:08 EST Accountability Had a super Father's Day. Due to saddle sores, I skipped my bike ride and instead, walked and trained with my puppy. After, I went and saw a bit of an agility competition. The puppy and I are not ready to compete yet, but I sure learn a lot when I go to the competitions. When I got back home, the boss lady was preparing my feast of shrimp tacos. While I waited, she fixed some delicious bean dip with chips and a delicious drink. Together, we watched the San Antonio Spurs kick butt and win the ... Mon, 16 Jun 2014 06:47:38 EST Accountability I consider this past week a big success in terms of exercise intensity and Nutritional discipline. However, when I got on the scale yesterday, I was surprised to see an increase of albs. Disappointed....Yes, but eager to continue on the journey. Heck, I can lose those pounds in one day so, why sweat the small stuff. The goal for next week is to lose those 2 lbs. HOOAAA!! Sun, 15 Jun 2014 08:51:00 EST Accountability Friday turned out to be a nice day. Exercise and nutrition were right on and the focus was there. Lookig forward to the Dog Agility Competition this weekend. While we're not yet ready for competition, I learn a lot by observing. Tomorrow's cycling should be challenging, it's my long riding day. HOOAAA!! Sat, 14 Jun 2014 07:27:32 EST Accountability Who loves you baby? I love me bunches. So proud of myself for doing it lately. I have been kicking butt on the bike and hanging tough with the nutrition. Inches are coming off, slowly but surely. HOOAAA!! Fri, 13 Jun 2014 13:38:43 EST Accountability Went to the Air Force Base to cycle and it sure felt different. I've been doing a bunch of climbing and the Base is flat as a pancake. It was fun. Nutrition was good and overall, I'm doing well. HOOAAA!! Thu, 12 Jun 2014 16:52:55 EST Accountability What a day!! Just loved it. Started off walking and training the dogs. Next, I was on the bike suffering on the hills. Did 2200' of climbing in 3.5 hours, followed by some resistance training. In the afternoon, gave the doggies a long 36 minute walk. All told, 4.5+ hours of fitness. The nutrition was right on. With the amount of exercise, the program allowed me 4,000+ calories. I consumed way less than that. So, over all, a magnificent day. BTW, I slept like a baby. HOOAAA!! Wed, 11 Jun 2014 08:25:43 EST Accountability Yesterday was a great discovery day. Yes, I did my cycling and yes, I was pretty good with my nutrition. Now this is no big thing for most people, but for dinner last night I had: fat free cottage cheese, blueberries, and mango. Me, a chow hound that has to have his meat, chicken or fish with dinner. Surviving on cottage cheese? You have to be kidding. What's really amazing is that I kind of like it and may do it again (What is this world coming to?). Guess there may be hope for me, after all... Tue, 10 Jun 2014 08:05:00 EST Accountability The fitness goal yesterday was to bike 4+ hours. Unfortunately, the weather just didn't cooperate and I had to settle on close to 3.5 hours. Still, that's not bad for a beat up old man. Went to a graduation party and was really proud of myself. In the past, I would enter the home and head straight for the chow and communicate from there. Yesterday I walked around and chatted with folks first and almost didn't even eat. Life is getting better and better. HOOAAA!! Mon, 9 Jun 2014 08:16:23 EST Accountability Yesterday was a good day. The cycling was short, but relatively intense. The nutrition was not great, but not horrible either. Overall, a relaxing day. HOOAAA!!
Sun, 8 Jun 2014 08:18:50 EST Accountability Yesterday had a bit of good and a bit of bad added in. My exercise went very well, having done almost 3 hours on the bike, 1+ hours walking, and 1/2 hour lifting. Nutrition went well until the dirty martinis came into the equation. The Devil forced me to drink 3 of those puppies. Never ever again. Normally I limit myself to one, but yesterday, for whatever reason, I went over the edge. Guess we all make those silly mistakes once in a while. HOOAAA!! Sat, 7 Jun 2014 16:09:20 EST Accountability While I did exercise yesterday, I felt totally exhausted during the bike ride. Had to cut the ride short. The nutritional side was great. I ended the night with a big salad dinner. Felt real good about that. Now, looking forward to a super weekend. HOOAAA!! Fri, 6 Jun 2014 07:45:28 EST Accountability Very nice day. Of course, I did my bike thing; trained my doggies, and took them on a long walk. Additionally, I practiced putting my tent up, right after the bike ride, in preparation for RAGBRAI. I want to be able to breeze putting it up, in spite of being tired and in the 90's. HOOAAA!! Thu, 5 Jun 2014 07:00:38 EST Accountability A very tiring day yesterday. Walked and trained the dogs; rode my bike; mowed the lawn; took dogs on a long walk; trained the puppy; and slept like a baby. On the nutritional side, all was well. While I overdid it a bit with the chocolate, was way below the caloric guideline. HOOAAA!! Wed, 4 Jun 2014 07:56:30 EST Accountability I'm continuing to make progress. The bike ride was super. Took it nice and easy and felt good. On the nutritional front, so proud of myself for not having had any peanut butter for 2+ weeks. I love the stuff. Today I do the dreaded hill repeats. They make me feel so bad, but are so very good for you. HOOAAA!! Tue, 3 Jun 2014 08:00:00 EST Accountability The goals for this week are simple: Get ready for RAGBRAI and consume less fat. We'll get ready for RAGBRAI by cycling 17.5 hours this week. We'll eliminate some fat by having smoothies for lunch and being more conscious of what we consume. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. HOOAAA!! Mon, 2 Jun 2014 07:48:55 EST Accountability Average temperature for yesterday's long ride was 90 and it certainly felt like it. While it was hot, I was able to stay on my beautiful Cervelo for almost 4 hours. In view of the very successful week, I let it hang out a bit during a party. It's a small reward for hanging tough and looking good. Ought to be in Hollywood. HOOAAA!! Sun, 1 Jun 2014 09:27:16 EST Accountability All systems are a go. Had a nice ride, in spite of temperatures in the 90's. Nutrition was good with calories below the recommended. Attitude is good and love is in the air. HOOAAA!! Sat, 31 May 2014 08:36:22 EST Accountability The bike ride felt extra good yesterday, in spite of 90+ degrees. Nutrition was good. The doggies trained well and the Spurs won. Life is indeed good. HOOAAA!! Fri, 30 May 2014 08:21:00 EST Accountability It was a good day. Fitness was good and nutrition was good. Hopefully I can keep this up. It's been a great ride lately and I like it. HOOAAA!! Thu, 29 May 2014 07:55:22 EST Accountability Was finally able to get in a short ride. Te rain has been horrific. Hopefully tomorrow all will return to normal. The nutrition has been right on. I've added some strength exercises this week. HOOAAA!! Wed, 28 May 2014 09:04:27 EST Accountability It was the shortest bike ride that I can remember. 2+ miles. I started my ride hoping that, in spite of the rain, I would be able to complete 2 hours of riding. Guess it wasn't meant to be because the thunder and the pouring rain made the ride impossible. Luckily, I got my training walk in with my doggies. Something is something. HOOAAA!! Tue, 27 May 2014 07:12:22 EST Accountability Rain, Rain. We needed badly, but it sure messes up our exercise routine. Luckily, I was able to ride through it and complete my planned ride for the day. It's been real wet lately. HOOAAA!! Mon, 26 May 2014 08:29:31 EST Don't Ever Forget We enjoy more freedoms than any other country on earth. The principal reason is our Vets and those who gave up their lives defending those very freedoms. Let us never forget those contributions. Tomorrow take a couple of moments and thank the Almighty for our Veterans. HOOAAA!! Sun, 25 May 2014 05:57:40 EST Accountability Exercise - Check, Nutrition - Uncheck. Went to my buddies' Italian restaurant last night for dinner. His food is to die for, luckily, we sat at the bar and sort of snacked and had drinks. Not as bad as what you'd expect, but bad enough. Sure was great seeing him. He's a super guy. HOOAAA!! Sat, 24 May 2014 08:58:14 EST I Made It! May 22nd holds a special place in my heart. Some good stuff has happened on that day coupled with the bad. I was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on the 22nd, 1st Lieutenant on the 22nd, and Captain on the 22nd. Unfortunately, on the 22nd of May I got my butt shot up in Viet Nam. So, I keep a very low profile every year, on that date. Fortunately, I survived to live another day. HOOAAA!! Fri, 23 May 2014 09:31:01 EST Accountability Yesterday was another good day. Biked long and hard, trained my Aussie, took my nap, ready my book, and did things around the house. Life is definitely good. HOOAAA!! Thu, 22 May 2014 08:25:33 EST Acountability Guess I had a case of the "24 hr Bug". Had to cancel my biking and instead take the doggies for a long walk. The nutrition was excellent, since I didn't have much of an appetite. Hopefully, the bug has left and I can resume my normal regimen. HOOAAA!! Wed, 21 May 2014 08:37:45 EST Accountability It started off as a typical great day, but I caught something that forced me to cut short my ride and mope around the house all day. Hopefully, it's gone now. We'll soon find out. HOOAAA!! Tue, 20 May 2014 08:09:44 EST Accountabiliy Another great day. Did 3+ hours of fitness, ate smartly, and enjoyed a relaxing Sunday. Wish all days were like that. HOOAAA!! Mon, 19 May 2014 08:26:49 EST Accountability You know, I ask myself often, "Who Loves You?". I'm happy to report that 99.9% of the time I answer, "I LOVE ME". I love me because I have the self-discipline to stick to my fitness regimen on most the days. I love me because I just don't make excuses (too chilly outside, left toe hurts, my tummy aches, tried hard but gave up, and the all-time favorite: had to do things around the house). When I flounder, I admit it and quickly get over it. It is of that reason that I have little (if any ) ... Sun, 18 May 2014 08:06:46 EST Accountability The doggies cat and I fared well. While the nutrition was not up to par, I stayed way below my allowance. Felt a bit tired so, I took it easy on the bike. Overall, it was a good day. HOOAAA!! Sat, 17 May 2014 09:47:36 EST
