BILL60's SparkPeople Blog BILL60's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community A Challenging Month and a Surprise May is turning out to be a very difficult month. Between the very bad allergies and the constant rain, it's becoming difficult to put in some miles. Hopes it clears up soon. On another positive note, I found out that I'm officially a great grandfather. My grandson and his lovely bride made it possible today, Which means that I'll be getting into my car next week to visit the little "crumb-snatcher" in Tucson. HOOAAA!! Tue, 12 May 2015 20:23:55 EST Very Nice Ride Well, we did our first century of the year. Almost 4,000 feet of climbing and plenty of wind. But, the body hung tough and I did my fastest 100-miler ever. Seems that I get stronger as the ride gets longer. Many young studs were passed by this beat-up old man and I Loved it. Normally, after finishing a 100-miler, I'm pretty beat up and do nothing but recover. This time around, I showered and quickly took my puppy out for some agility training. Now, If I could drop some serious weight, I'd be ... Mon, 27 Apr 2015 06:46:51 EST Super Week To lead the active life that I lead, I must be and am retired. This past week I cycled 297+ miles and 1,537 minutes of exercise (walking/training dogs, lifting, and cycling). Folks, I'm a beat up 70 year old that's not supposed to be able to do that much. And the best part is that I'm ready for another long ride tomorrow. While I've always been very active, lately I've done more than ever. I'm gonna give it some more time and if it continues, I'll let you in on my little secret. Don't like to... Sat, 18 Apr 2015 22:43:35 EST A Great Month Now that the weather has opened up in South Texas, I am taking advantage of the opportunity and logging some cycling miles. So far this month I've logged 396 miles. I must admit that luck has played a part in this accomplishment. It's been raining pretty hard here, but I've been able to ride in between the rains and get away with it. Hopefully, this will continue as next week some major rains are forecast. Would love to log 1,000 miles this month, but that's a dream. I've never logged 1,000 m... Sun, 12 Apr 2015 19:27:02 EST An Organized Ride Was Had I expected the worst and ended up doing well. The weather was cloudy and winds were screaming at 22 MPH with gusts upwards into the 30's. The long ride was a 60-miler and not too many folks joined in the "FUN". The beginning 20 miles was bearable and the next 20 miles were totally unbearable. But, as luck would have it, the last 20 miles had nothing but tailwinds. It was incredible. My average after 20 miles was 16; after 40 miles, 15.2; after 50.12 miles......17.4. Not too shabby for a beat-... Sat, 4 Apr 2015 23:31:47 EST Perhaps a Wet Ride I have an organized bike ride tomorrow and the forecast is for rain during most of the day. Depending on other conditions, I may be a wet noodle by the time I finish the 100K ride. I don't mind being wet, but I do mind being wet and cold. So, hopefully the temperatures will cooperate. HOOAAA!! Fri, 3 Apr 2015 05:45:43 EST A Super Celebration So, Saturday was my big "70" birthday. My very best buddy and wife told me that she had planned a get-together with family on Sunday. So, I was really looking forward to seeing the Gang. When Sunday afternoon came, Surprise, surprise...sister-in-law with hubby arrived. They were totally unexpected (I thought). Next came my very good friend and Best Man at our wedding. Totally unexpected. And so it went with unexpected friends and family showing up. In the end, there were over 45 folks at the ... Mon, 23 Feb 2015 19:50:19 EST The Coolest Thing I have been training my Aussie in agility for a bit more than a year. My current trainer told me that I needed to exercise my dog more so as to allow him to have more endurance. So, I began researching those attachments to the bike that allow the dog to safely exercise while you ride. After much research and discussion, I settled on "The Bike Tow Leash". While it costs more than all the rest, I wanted a hassle-free experience. Today that"puppy" arrived. Couldn't wait to read the instruction a... Tue, 17 Feb 2015 19:58:56 EST Accountability Took out my wallet and signed up for 5 organized rides ranging in distance between 62 and 100 miles. We'll add some more later in the year. I try to do at least 12 organized rides each year. Great way to meet folks and have a great time. One of the five rides is RAGBRAI and I'm really looking forward to meeting up with the super folks there. Another ride is the Hotter than Hell 100. That's probably my favorite ride. It's very well organized and challenges you with its high temperatures (100+)... Sun, 15 Feb 2015 09:33:49 EST Accountability The weather has been real bike friendly lately. In the 70's the last 3 days. Thoroughly enjoyed my rides. If only those temperatures held for a while. On the nutritional front, we're doing good. With RAGBRAI coming up, have to get lean and mean. Am switching agility trainers for the doggie and I. We needed the change. The new lady is full of energy and is really well informed. She's an active competitor who wins big. Hopefully, she'll share some of her winning techniques. HOOAAA!! Fri, 30 Jan 2015 07:56:54 EST RAGBRAI For the past 4 years, I have come out and invited whomever is interested in a challenge, to come out and join the thousands other who come out to Iowa and traverse the state in 7 days. This year's route was announced Saturday and it looks very doable. What makes RAGBRAI (and other multi-day rides) is that for 7 days all you do is ride your bike, visit towns, and pal around with some wonderful folks (and sip a bit of beer). To me, it just doesn't get any better. If you can make it, join us. H... Wed, 28 Jan 2015 19:52:39 EST Real Crazy! So far, January has been one nutty month. The temperatures have been vacillating between 30 degrees one day and 75 degrees the next. Additionally, the rains and wind have made cycling a real challenge. But, we must continue to "Do It. While it may be a bit nutty, I sure would not want to be in New York/New Jersy/Pennsylvania/Massachusetts right now. So, we're OK in comparison. HOOAAA!! Mon, 26 Jan 2015 21:25:52 EST Acountability For South Texas, it has been on crazy winter. It's been unseasonably cold, rainy , and windy. I could not ride for 3 days, then was able to ride for 3. Today, unable to ride. It's reay frustrating. But, I should not complain cause the folks in the Midwest will not see their bikes until some time in March. Nonetheless, I'm used to being on the bike much more often. I'll hope for the best and hang tough. HOOAAA!! Wed, 14 Jan 2015 22:16:59 EST Accountability It was indeed very cold yesterday. I pondered as to wether or not to bike and decided to go out there and give it a try. After 2+ hours on the bike and many weird looks from my neighbors and friends, I survived the ride and felt real good at the end. It feels so good to know that you're the only "NUT" out there in 20+ degree weather. I guess my passion for cycling at times overcomes plain old common sense. HOOAAA!! Fri, 9 Jan 2015 08:38:47 EST Accountability Well, the weatherman says that it's 26 degrees, down to 20 wind chill. The question is, will I ride my bike or not. Stay tuned as I think about the wind and the cold and my bod freezing. I must be nuts to even consider biking today. But, who ever said I was sane?? HOOAAA!! Thu, 8 Jan 2015 09:25:31 EST Accountability It was cold and very windy today. Felt like I was going uphill most of the 2+ hour ride. A real challenge. My puppy is really coming along with the agility training. It's been 11 months since we started and he's really pick it up quickly. World Championship, here we come (LOL). We work out just about every day in my bak yard, where I have several obstacles set up (jumps, tunnel, tire, see-saw, and chute). He's mastered all and now needs to understand exactly where I want him to go. HOOAAA!! Wed, 7 Jan 2015 19:12:58 EST Accountability It has been a very busy day. Rode my bike for 2+ hours, shopped at Costco, trained the puppy, mowed the lawn, stacked a zillion leaves into piles. I am totally beat. Will sleep like a baby. HOOAAA!! Tue, 6 Jan 2015 20:32:18 EST Accountability I'm back into my groove. Got on my bike and did it, in spite of high winds and cold. Sure felt good. While the speed was slow, the ride was heavenly. On the consumption side, all was good. HOOAAA!! Sun, 4 Jan 2015 21:02:42 EST Accountability Finally, after 7 days I was able to get on my bike and do a tiny little ride. It felt so good. After the ride, I cleaned my Cervelo up and made it look like a new bike. So, not only was I able to ride my bike, but was also able to train the puppy. Had a complete day and was ever so careful with what I ate. Overall, a super day. HOOAAA!! Sat, 3 Jan 2015 20:58:27 EST New Year Well, 2015 is finally here. I'm really looking forward to a great year. Instead of duplicating last year/year before's goals, I'm going to deviate somewhat from my normal goals.
Goal No. 1 - Stay away from peanut butter. I love PB, but since I'm not good at regulating its intake, I'll just drop it. I'm already about 6 weeks into this goal.
Goal No. 2 - No chocolate until I reach a pre-determined weight goal. When I do, just a bit of intake only.
Goal No. 3 - Forget the cookies... Thu, 1 Jan 2015 15:14:39 EST Accountability It hasn't been a great Holiday Season, so far. Been laid up in bed going on 4 days with a bad cold and unable to get outside of the house. Bones ache, head is splitting, and cough is constant. Perhaps tomorrow we'll see a change. HOOAAA!! Mon, 29 Dec 2014 20:19:09 EST Accountability I'm struggling to keep my self-discipline on target. With so much food and so many other temptations. I will probably not do well. Guess the holidays are controlling me. HOOAAA!! Mon, 22 Dec 2014 23:18:13 EST Accountability It's been a real slow day today. Woke up with some heavy raining outside. Decided to skip the biking and get my wheel looked at. It apparently needed an inner cleaning. My good spare Zipp 101 real wheel has developed some bad cracks. The latter means replacing the rear wheel. Saw and bid on a wheel in E-Bay for $150. That's a real deal. They're about $600, new. If I wing the bid, I'll go back to riding the 101's and saving the 303's for special events. HOOAAA!! Fri, 19 Dec 2014 18:18:49 EST Christmas Cards Had to put it all (or almost all) to the back burner yesterday. Primary mission: do the Christmas cards. It took hours to address the envelopes by hand (Apple doesn't have a program that I can use to have labels), stuff the envelopes with the card, and separate the cards (overseers/local). Finally at 9:25 PM the mission was accomplished except for address questions for the Boss lady. In all, there were "87" Christmas cards. My fingers hurt. HOOAAA!! Thu, 18 Dec 2014 08:45:09 EST Accountability It was indeed a beautiful day yesterday. Temperatures in the 70's and the sun was out. A great day for a bike ride. Am attempting to eliminate peanut butter from my diet. It's very habit forming, for me. I just can't seem to hold back my desires to have more and more. On Sunday I finished it off and don't plan on buying more for a long while. Sure bona miss that deliciously nasty stuff. HOOAAA!! Tue, 16 Dec 2014 07:11:14 EST Accountability Had a bike ride scheduled yesterday, but another flat spoiled the fun. Decided to switch wheels and put in some really heavy and longer lasting inner tubes. Discovered that what was causing some of the flats was a rear on the side of my almost new tire. Anyway, it took a while to switch wheels, cassettes and inner tubes. When finished, I was not in any mood to ride the bike so, I gave it a real good cleaning. HOOAAA!! Mon, 15 Dec 2014 08:40:04 EST Accountability It's Saturday morning and a very dreary day. There's fog in the air so, visibility is not too good. Dangerous for cyclists. Especially me cause I don't have lights in the front of the bike. So, I'll just have to wait until it clears up a bit. But cycle I will do. HOOAAA!! Sat, 13 Dec 2014 09:15:48 EST Christmas Shopping I detest shopping in crowded places. It is for that reason that I shop at nice stores and avoid the K-mart/Walmarts of the world. In our house, the shopping for presents is mostly done by the Boss Lady. While she dislikes shopping, she doesn't trust me to pick presents that are reasonably priced. This year she did most of her Christmas shopping on-line at Macy's. Apparently, the latter had a nice sale and she spent $600+ that would normally have cost her over $1,400. I found that impressive. ... Fri, 12 Dec 2014 09:02:27 EST Accountability It's been an interestg December 2015, so far. While I haven't been real bad with my nutritional choices, it has not been real pretty. Thand God that the only thing that's on course, so far, is my cycling. If it weren't for that, I'd be in deep trouble. HOOAAA!! Wed, 10 Dec 2014 08:28:43 EST Accountability Have you had one of those where you just don't feel like doing it?? Today was my day. Just didn't want to get with the program. I persevered and did what I was supposed to do. Sure felt good. HOOAAA!! Tue, 9 Dec 2014 22:12:47 EST Oh Christmas Tree So, yesterday was the day to put up our Christmas tree. My wonderful wife has a thing about lights. She LOVES those little goodies. Every year we put oodles of lights on the tree. It's a major undertaking. This year I decided to count how many lights we put on the tree. Guess...........................2,100 miniature lights. To me, that's a bit excessive. But, she's in charge of the decorations so, no arguing cause she the boss applesauce. HOOAAA!! Mon, 8 Dec 2014 08:33:54 EST Accountability Pretty physically active day yesterday. Walked/trained the dogs; cycled for 2.5+ hours; and put up outside christmas lights. Would somebody please give me an AMEN?? HOOAAA!! Sat, 6 Dec 2014 09:13:59 EST Tires Two weeks ago while riding in West Texas (City of Alpine), on very rough roads, I noticed that my, rear tire was getting flat. Sure enough, a flat tire (#1). Today I took off for what would have been a challenging long hill repeat workout. As I was completing 13 miles, I heard the now familiar sound of a blow-out (#2). I apparently went over something sharp and penetrating. Luckily, it was close to home and I was able to walk it. After fixing the flat, I got on my bike and was ready to contin... Fri, 5 Dec 2014 08:49:04 EST Age I see it, I read it, I deplore it. So often we limit our performance simply because of our age. I hear such things as: "People my age just don't exercise that way"; "That's way too strenuous"; "At my age, I should be on the couch watching a good movie, instead of going outside and hurting myself exercising"; "Those days of exercising are over"; and "You heart just can't handle exercise". Once in a while I have folks tell me that one of these days I'll drop dead with a heart attack due to my... Thu, 4 Dec 2014 08:37:52 EST Accountability This AM looks like a perfect day for a ride. Temperatures in the 50's and very little wind. Just love those days. Just got my power meter calibrated so, hope that a;; works out well with the data gathering. I find that power meters are the real steady measure of your effort. You can't measure effort by speed or distance because the weather and course elevation dictate. However, power is a reliable form of effort measurement . If you can afford it, I highly;y recommend getting one. Hang tough.... Wed, 3 Dec 2014 08:28:52 EST Accountability It was indeed a chilly day. Wind chill brought temperatures into the mid-30's. The schedule called for 6 long hill climbs. The ride stopped before it began. I had a flat tire. Five minutes later, we were on the road. The climbs were challenging and the wind was ever-present, but we hung tough and "Did It". HOOAAA!! Tue, 2 Dec 2014 21:39:29 EST Accountability Back hone and back to the exercise regimen. To be perfectly honest, I was not a very good boy over the Thanksgiving Holiday. Too many sweets and to much of the wrong foods. So, today we get back into the healthy routine. But, it sure was nice getting together with family and enjoying some great times. HOOAAA!! Mon, 1 Dec 2014 07:02:57 EST El Tour de Tucson We arrived in Tucson on Thursday, after an 8-hour drive from Alpine, Tx. We stayed at a local Marriott (wife works for Marriott so, we get great rates there) until our Timeshare was ready on Friday. Had very nice supper at Pinnacle Peak with grandson and wife, followed by a good night's sleep. On Friday we went to the Convention Center and picked up my ride packet and gave the Special Olympics folks the $1,000 that I scrounged up from my family and friends. Boy, they were really appreciative ... Mon, 24 Nov 2014 09:47:02 EST Accountability Not much to report that's different from previous blogs. The doggie is doing super. Last class attended, he did incredibly well. One lady indicated that we were ready for competition. I remarked that one more year and we would be totally ready. The cycling continues, in spite of the frigid weather. Other than my normal Sunday off, I've been religious about getting on the bike. Today through Friday, I'll be taking a break in preparation for Saturday's Tour de Tucson, a 100+ mile ride. We will ... Wed, 19 Nov 2014 08:27:19 EST Accountability Last week Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday were frigid. In particular, Friday was really a challenge. While I'm passionate about cycling, there's a limit to the madness. And folks, the limit.....................has not been reached. I dug deep, gave myself some choice words about not being a jive wimp and got on the Momma bike. We hung tough and DID IT. Boy do I feel like Tarzan, Rocky, Brady, Manning, and Alberto Contador. I'm just a super stud. And to top it all off, I rode today w... Mon, 17 Nov 2014 18:51:29 EST The Weather I love cycling and it takes bunches to make me Not get on my bike. Day before yesterday, the temperatures dipped into the low 30's (wind chill brought it into the 20's) with extremely high winds. We toughed it out and cycled a bit. Yesterday, the same with a bit more wind and lower temps. There again, we toughed it out and cycled a bit. Today, in the 20's and high teens with the wind chill. Don't know if this Puerto Rican "Bod" will make it on the bike. Will see if the temps climb just a bit.... Fri, 14 Nov 2014 08:45:09 EST Gotta Love It Some of us have a tendency to make up for not being good on the nutritional intake by really kicking butt on the exercise regimen. As was pointed out by my good buddy GHK1962, after doing not so good last weekend, I would make up for it by going hard on the bike. Well, that is just what happened. Being somewhat of a data freak, I have Personal Bests for different cycling challenges. Some of these challenges include power wattage for different times such as: 5 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 20 ... Sat, 8 Nov 2014 07:21:35 EST Accountability I believe it's human nature to report the good stuff and not want to report the not-so-good stuff. Lately, I had been reporting my successes and feeling really good about it. But, to be thoroughly honest, not all is success and am here to own up. This past weekend was a total disaster. My wife's gang came over and stayed overnight. In an effort at making it special, my Cuchi prepared some really delicious Mexican food on both days. I could have controlled the urges, but did not. The result, ... Wed, 5 Nov 2014 08:03:16 EST Accountability What a great way to start the month. First off, not one candy was had by this person last night. The temptations were there, but I hung tough. Secondly, I went to the course to test out the 12.6 mile Senior Games Course. Two weeks ago I amazed myself with the results. Today, I kicked butt big time. Previous best time power wattage was 186. Today's number was 204 with an average MPH of 19.7. You gotta love it. In no time I'll be in the 20's. HOOAAA!! Sat, 1 Nov 2014 20:26:40 EST Accountability I'm continuing the "Fast Track" program and doing really well with it. Tomorrow will tell the story after my weigh-in. It's been 6 days on the fast track. The next 7 days should be a real challenge as we will have company over the weekend and Halloween with its candy temptations. War is hell and I'm in the trenches. HOOAAA!! Fri, 31 Oct 2014 09:19:53 EST Acountability Third day of the 10-week Fast Start program and all is well: Fat 22% and protein 28%. The ride was a bit long, but nice. Along the way I set a new 5 minute power number, 229 watts. Very happy with that. My Aussie did real well on all obstacles. His only mistakes were caused by the dummy "Handler". Gonna have to put myself in Time Out. All together, I was able to log over 3 hours of exercise today. Not bad for a beat up old man. HOOAAA!!
Wed, 29 Oct 2014 19:37:06 EST Successful Day My principal goal for today was to stay within the nutritional guidelines in the "
Racing Weight's" fast track. The latter recommended higher than normal protein and lower fat %. Happy with myself for having accomplished that goal. Results: 15.6% fat and 32.4% protein. The fat % would have been lower, but I just could not do without my peanut butter. Additionally, I walked and trained the dogs and rode my bike. Bottom line: 1,000+ caloric deficit. HOOAAA!! Tue, 28 Oct 2014 08:25:10 EST Super Weekend It was indeed a great weekend. On Saturday, I did my ride on a beautiful South Texas day, preceded by some doggie training. That night, I went on a hot date with the boss lady. On Sunday, I thanked the "Big Guy" for all the good in my life. Also trained the doggie and took a walk with wife and the dogs at the park. Later in the day, I watched some All-American football and was happy to see my Team kick butt (New England Patriots). I like those kinds of weekends. HOOAAA!! Mon, 27 Oct 2014 08:24:19 EST 10 Weeks to go So, now that I bought and read Matt Fitzgerald's "Racing Weight", I will start what he describes as Fast Track, tomorrow and for 10 weeks. It's a way to reduce your weight prior to commencing the Performance portion. So, I'm supposed to be at a 300 to 500 calorie deficit daily. Of course, your workouts cannot be high intensity due to the lower nutritional consumption. I'll start Performance cycling the first week of January. It's a pretty neat book that's well organized and makes sense. We'll... Sun, 26 Oct 2014 09:37:55 EST Accountability It has been a beautiful day. Just the kind of day that begs a nice bike ride. And so it was, a nice bike ride through the countryside. Enjoyed the fall colors and the leaves falling. Will not enjoy having to rake those puppies later on. Tonight I'm on a hot date with my Cuchi-Cuchi to our favorite Mexican restaurant. The puppy is on target with the agility training. He's really impressive. At this pace, we'll be the world agility champs in less that 2 years. HOOAAA!! Sat, 25 Oct 2014 17:46:04 EST
