BILL60's SparkPeople Blog BILL60's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Dog Agility Competition This past weekend, Wonder Dog and I packed our goodies and headed for a Dog Agility Competition. We're relatively new to this and I did not expect much. While we train almost daily, my dog and I don't have the experience competing in a big venue with many people watching. But, after 3 days, that little DUDE performed like a Pro. We qualified in 4 events and brought home 8 ribbons. I am so proud of my Aussie. Next competition is in mid December and we're gonna work hard to make it a great one.... Wed, 18 Nov 2015 07:18:38 EST In Sync I was just about finished with my blog and suddenly it disappeared. So, I'm starting again. So far this month I'm a bit ahead of schedule with my goal of 1,000 cycling miles. All systems are go and hopefully, I'll make it by the end of the month. In th last 3 weeks I've added some strength exercises so as to keep the total body in shape. I do chin-ups, crunches and weights, Mon thru Fri. I'm averaging over 3 hours of cardio daily and the body is OK with it, so far. Additionally, I do some agi... Tue, 15 Sep 2015 07:03:45 EST A Record Breaker So, today I rode in my 9th "Hotter than Hell 100" Bike Ride. Prior to today, my very best was 17.2 miles per hour for the total ride. Today, I was feeling real good at the start. The first hour had my average at 18.1. The second hour was at 19.1. The third was at 19.3. The fourth at 19.4 and the 5th at 19.41. I feel so good about breaking my personal best. It's important to note that the previous PR was in 2011, at my ripe old age of 66. Not only am I getting more handsome, but now I'm gettin... Sat, 29 Aug 2015 16:54:04 EST Lost While doing RAGBRAI, I was hearing this god-awful sound coming from my bike when going uphill. It turned out to be bad bearings, according to my mechanic. I turned my bike in for repair yesterday hoping to get it back right away. Unfortunately, no bearings available. They have to be ordered and won't be coming until today, at best. Thsat means another day without riding. I'm totally mis-oriented. I need my back in order to be complete. HOOAAA!! Wed, 29 Jul 2015 06:26:39 EST RAGBRAI This was my 4th time doing this incredible ride. I arrived at the Iowa town of Davenport on Thursday and took a shuttle bus across Iowa to the start town of Sioux City. Upon arriving, we put up out tents and met up with old friends. Tat night there came a tornado warning and many who were tenting ran to the hotels for cover. Some of the not so bright (me included) stayed in the tents and weathered what was incredible winds, thunder, and heavy rains. At around 2 in the morning, it all stopped.... Sun, 26 Jul 2015 19:52:09 EST Just an Update In my last blog I described my very first experience with dog agility competition. My puppy ended up kicking butt and placing first. Two weeks later we competed again and this time took 2 first places. Boy am I proud of my "Blue". Now, we must take a break as I head to Iowa for my annual 7-day bike ride across Iowa. I'm really looking forward to the ride. I will meet up with old friends and ride my bike for 7 glorious days. Life just does not get any better. I'm currently in Joplin, Mo., read... Thu, 16 Jul 2015 07:16:36 EST Victory Yesterday and today we will skip cycling. The reason..........for 1.5 years my doggie and I have been training almost daily, learning the business of agility. We've had to learn how to maneuver different obstacles and more importantly, build a bond of trust. Yesterday was the first time that we competed in an agility ring. The latter had many people and many dogs. The barking, almost constantly. It was in that environment that we lined up at the starting line. The night before. I was like a c... Sun, 14 Jun 2015 06:42:52 EST Accountability It's getting hot in South Texas. The avg temp for today's ride was 92.6. It just keeps you honest. Worked on hills, walked/trained the dogs, and did some house cleaning. Great day to stay busy. HOOAAA!! Thu, 11 Jun 2015 19:26:43 EST Accountability All continues well, in spite of temperatures hovering in the 90's. Worked on some hills, which is always so much fun (NOT). The body is hanging tough. After the ride, I mowed, trimmed, vaccuumed, and made my bike pretty. I svn did 2 training sessions with the dogs. Not bad for a beat up old Dude. HOOAAA!! Tue, 9 Jun 2015 19:03:56 EST Accountability All went well on Saturday and Sunday. Overall, it turned out to be a wonderful week. We ended up with 267+ miles of cycling from 6/1-6/7. So, I'm on target for my goal of 1,000 miles. HOOAAA!! Mon, 8 Jun 2015 16:49:52 EST Accountability We wrapped up the first seven days of June nicely. Was Happy with having logged 267+ miles. So, I'm still on track for a 1,000 miles month. This week we put the final touches to Dog Training. This Saturday and Sunday is our very first Agility Competition. While I feel confident of my dog's ability, the many distractions at the site is something that he hasn't been exposed to. Hopefuly he'll just go out there and make me proud. HOOAAA!! Mon, 8 Jun 2015 07:24:34 EST Accountability Pretty hot day today, but we hung tough and ended up with a nice fast ride. Covered 43.21 miles in 2.5+ hours. I went to the Air Force Base and did some lifting before the ride. Additionally, I trained the dogs twice and took them for a small walk. All told, I covered 208 minutes of exercise. HOOAAA!!

Miles Cycled So Far: 173.47
Goal: 1,000 Fri, 5 Jun 2015 18:43:03 EST Accountability Good workout day, in spite of temperatures in the 90's. Today was hill day and boy was it challenging. It's so good for you, but hurts bunches. Worked the dog a bit and took them both for a late afternoon long walk. They'll definitely sleep well (and so will I). So far, this month is going weill. HO)AAA!!

Miles cycled so far: 130.23
Goal: 1,000
Thu, 4 Jun 2015 18:42:18 EST Accountability Another great day of exercise. Went to Air Force base and lifted weights . by some relatively fast cycling. Did 2 sessions of agility training with the puppy. Need to get him ready for our first 2 agility competitions (6/13 and 7/3). He's enjoying the chicken treats bunches. HOOAAA!!

Miles Cycled So Far: 99.76
Goal: 1,000 Wed, 3 Jun 2015 19:07:41 EST Accountability Another great and very active day. In the morning I walked and trained my dogs and did a nice bike ride, with particular attention to hills. In the afternoon I mowed, trimmed, spread fertilizer, and sprayed the weeds. Finally, I took the dogs for a long walk. Sleepig will be goos today.

Miles Cycled: 65.93
Goal: 1,000
Tue, 2 Jun 2015 19:23:34 EST Accountability Nice start to the month. Did a 2+ hour ride, walked and trained the dogs, and lifted some weights. Feeling good and hoping for a great cycling month. RAGBRAI is right around the corner (July19) so, Hill training has to start. The plan is to do hills Tues and Thur with long ride on the weekend. Mon, Wed, And Fri will be a shorter ride, with weight lifting thrown into the equation. Goal is: 1,000 miles for the month. HOOAAA!! Tue, 2 Jun 2015 07:06:38 EST End of the Month I just looked at my month's journal and realized that this month I've done the least amount of riding since I started seriously riding 9 years ago. Between the Texas rains and my trip to Tucson and Vegas, I will have ridden just 12 days in May. Well, we'll have to fix that for June. Goals for June: ride at least 27 days, log at least 4,000 minutes of exercise, eat healthy, and enjoy the trip. HOOAAA!! Sun, 31 May 2015 07:16:17 EST I'm Back Took 2+ weeks off in order to visit my new great granddaughter and my sisters. Just before my trip began, I was hit with a leaky passenger side leak in my '09 Volvo. I'd already had to pay over $2,500 for various repairs and this one was over $3,000. Needless to say, I retired my trusty, but expensive car and bought a new Subaru CrossTeck. There was no time to put in the bike racks so, no cycling during my trip. First stop was Tucson where I met my beautiful new member of the family. I held h... Tue, 26 May 2015 07:07:46 EST A Challenging Month and a Surprise May is turning out to be a very difficult month. Between the very bad allergies and the constant rain, it's becoming difficult to put in some miles. Hopes it clears up soon. On another positive note, I found out that I'm officially a great grandfather. My grandson and his lovely bride made it possible today, Which means that I'll be getting into my car next week to visit the little "crumb-snatcher" in Tucson. HOOAAA!! Tue, 12 May 2015 20:23:55 EST Very Nice Ride Well, we did our first century of the year. Almost 4,000 feet of climbing and plenty of wind. But, the body hung tough and I did my fastest 100-miler ever. Seems that I get stronger as the ride gets longer. Many young studs were passed by this beat-up old man and I Loved it. Normally, after finishing a 100-miler, I'm pretty beat up and do nothing but recover. This time around, I showered and quickly took my puppy out for some agility training. Now, If I could drop some serious weight, I'd be ... Mon, 27 Apr 2015 06:46:51 EST Super Week To lead the active life that I lead, I must be and am retired. This past week I cycled 297+ miles and 1,537 minutes of exercise (walking/training dogs, lifting, and cycling). Folks, I'm a beat up 70 year old that's not supposed to be able to do that much. And the best part is that I'm ready for another long ride tomorrow. While I've always been very active, lately I've done more than ever. I'm gonna give it some more time and if it continues, I'll let you in on my little secret. Don't like to... Sat, 18 Apr 2015 22:43:35 EST A Great Month Now that the weather has opened up in South Texas, I am taking advantage of the opportunity and logging some cycling miles. So far this month I've logged 396 miles. I must admit that luck has played a part in this accomplishment. It's been raining pretty hard here, but I've been able to ride in between the rains and get away with it. Hopefully, this will continue as next week some major rains are forecast. Would love to log 1,000 miles this month, but that's a dream. I've never logged 1,000 m... Sun, 12 Apr 2015 19:27:02 EST An Organized Ride Was Had I expected the worst and ended up doing well. The weather was cloudy and winds were screaming at 22 MPH with gusts upwards into the 30's. The long ride was a 60-miler and not too many folks joined in the "FUN". The beginning 20 miles was bearable and the next 20 miles were totally unbearable. But, as luck would have it, the last 20 miles had nothing but tailwinds. It was incredible. My average after 20 miles was 16; after 40 miles, 15.2; after 50.12 miles......17.4. Not too shabby for a beat-... Sat, 4 Apr 2015 23:31:47 EST Perhaps a Wet Ride I have an organized bike ride tomorrow and the forecast is for rain during most of the day. Depending on other conditions, I may be a wet noodle by the time I finish the 100K ride. I don't mind being wet, but I do mind being wet and cold. So, hopefully the temperatures will cooperate. HOOAAA!! Fri, 3 Apr 2015 05:45:43 EST A Super Celebration So, Saturday was my big "70" birthday. My very best buddy and wife told me that she had planned a get-together with family on Sunday. So, I was really looking forward to seeing the Gang. When Sunday afternoon came, Surprise, surprise...sister-in-law with hubby arrived. They were totally unexpected (I thought). Next came my very good friend and Best Man at our wedding. Totally unexpected. And so it went with unexpected friends and family showing up. In the end, there were over 45 folks at the ... Mon, 23 Feb 2015 19:50:19 EST The Coolest Thing I have been training my Aussie in agility for a bit more than a year. My current trainer told me that I needed to exercise my dog more so as to allow him to have more endurance. So, I began researching those attachments to the bike that allow the dog to safely exercise while you ride. After much research and discussion, I settled on "The Bike Tow Leash". While it costs more than all the rest, I wanted a hassle-free experience. Today that"puppy" arrived. Couldn't wait to read the instruction a... Tue, 17 Feb 2015 19:58:56 EST Accountability Took out my wallet and signed up for 5 organized rides ranging in distance between 62 and 100 miles. We'll add some more later in the year. I try to do at least 12 organized rides each year. Great way to meet folks and have a great time. One of the five rides is RAGBRAI and I'm really looking forward to meeting up with the super folks there. Another ride is the Hotter than Hell 100. That's probably my favorite ride. It's very well organized and challenges you with its high temperatures (100+)... Sun, 15 Feb 2015 09:33:49 EST Accountability The weather has been real bike friendly lately. In the 70's the last 3 days. Thoroughly enjoyed my rides. If only those temperatures held for a while. On the nutritional front, we're doing good. With RAGBRAI coming up, have to get lean and mean. Am switching agility trainers for the doggie and I. We needed the change. The new lady is full of energy and is really well informed. She's an active competitor who wins big. Hopefully, she'll share some of her winning techniques. HOOAAA!! Fri, 30 Jan 2015 07:56:54 EST RAGBRAI For the past 4 years, I have come out and invited whomever is interested in a challenge, to come out and join the thousands other who come out to Iowa and traverse the state in 7 days. This year's route was announced Saturday and it looks very doable. What makes RAGBRAI (and other multi-day rides) is that for 7 days all you do is ride your bike, visit towns, and pal around with some wonderful folks (and sip a bit of beer). To me, it just doesn't get any better. If you can make it, join us. H... Wed, 28 Jan 2015 19:52:39 EST Real Crazy! So far, January has been one nutty month. The temperatures have been vacillating between 30 degrees one day and 75 degrees the next. Additionally, the rains and wind have made cycling a real challenge. But, we must continue to "Do It. While it may be a bit nutty, I sure would not want to be in New York/New Jersy/Pennsylvania/Massachusetts right now. So, we're OK in comparison. HOOAAA!! Mon, 26 Jan 2015 21:25:52 EST Acountability For South Texas, it has been on crazy winter. It's been unseasonably cold, rainy , and windy. I could not ride for 3 days, then was able to ride for 3. Today, unable to ride. It's reay frustrating. But, I should not complain cause the folks in the Midwest will not see their bikes until some time in March. Nonetheless, I'm used to being on the bike much more often. I'll hope for the best and hang tough. HOOAAA!! Wed, 14 Jan 2015 22:16:59 EST Accountability It was indeed very cold yesterday. I pondered as to wether or not to bike and decided to go out there and give it a try. After 2+ hours on the bike and many weird looks from my neighbors and friends, I survived the ride and felt real good at the end. It feels so good to know that you're the only "NUT" out there in 20+ degree weather. I guess my passion for cycling at times overcomes plain old common sense. HOOAAA!! Fri, 9 Jan 2015 08:38:47 EST Accountability Well, the weatherman says that it's 26 degrees, down to 20 wind chill. The question is, will I ride my bike or not. Stay tuned as I think about the wind and the cold and my bod freezing. I must be nuts to even consider biking today. But, who ever said I was sane?? HOOAAA!! Thu, 8 Jan 2015 09:25:31 EST Accountability It was cold and very windy today. Felt like I was going uphill most of the 2+ hour ride. A real challenge. My puppy is really coming along with the agility training. It's been 11 months since we started and he's really pick it up quickly. World Championship, here we come (LOL). We work out just about every day in my bak yard, where I have several obstacles set up (jumps, tunnel, tire, see-saw, and chute). He's mastered all and now needs to understand exactly where I want him to go. HOOAAA!! Wed, 7 Jan 2015 19:12:58 EST Accountability It has been a very busy day. Rode my bike for 2+ hours, shopped at Costco, trained the puppy, mowed the lawn, stacked a zillion leaves into piles. I am totally beat. Will sleep like a baby. HOOAAA!! Tue, 6 Jan 2015 20:32:18 EST Accountability I'm back into my groove. Got on my bike and did it, in spite of high winds and cold. Sure felt good. While the speed was slow, the ride was heavenly. On the consumption side, all was good. HOOAAA!! Sun, 4 Jan 2015 21:02:42 EST Accountability Finally, after 7 days I was able to get on my bike and do a tiny little ride. It felt so good. After the ride, I cleaned my Cervelo up and made it look like a new bike. So, not only was I able to ride my bike, but was also able to train the puppy. Had a complete day and was ever so careful with what I ate. Overall, a super day. HOOAAA!! Sat, 3 Jan 2015 20:58:27 EST New Year Well, 2015 is finally here. I'm really looking forward to a great year. Instead of duplicating last year/year before's goals, I'm going to deviate somewhat from my normal goals.
Goal No. 1 - Stay away from peanut butter. I love PB, but since I'm not good at regulating its intake, I'll just drop it. I'm already about 6 weeks into this goal.
Goal No. 2 - No chocolate until I reach a pre-determined weight goal. When I do, just a bit of intake only.
Goal No. 3 - Forget the cookies... Thu, 1 Jan 2015 15:14:39 EST Accountability It hasn't been a great Holiday Season, so far. Been laid up in bed going on 4 days with a bad cold and unable to get outside of the house. Bones ache, head is splitting, and cough is constant. Perhaps tomorrow we'll see a change. HOOAAA!! Mon, 29 Dec 2014 20:19:09 EST Accountability I'm struggling to keep my self-discipline on target. With so much food and so many other temptations. I will probably not do well. Guess the holidays are controlling me. HOOAAA!! Mon, 22 Dec 2014 23:18:13 EST Accountability It's been a real slow day today. Woke up with some heavy raining outside. Decided to skip the biking and get my wheel looked at. It apparently needed an inner cleaning. My good spare Zipp 101 real wheel has developed some bad cracks. The latter means replacing the rear wheel. Saw and bid on a wheel in E-Bay for $150. That's a real deal. They're about $600, new. If I wing the bid, I'll go back to riding the 101's and saving the 303's for special events. HOOAAA!! Fri, 19 Dec 2014 18:18:49 EST Christmas Cards Had to put it all (or almost all) to the back burner yesterday. Primary mission: do the Christmas cards. It took hours to address the envelopes by hand (Apple doesn't have a program that I can use to have labels), stuff the envelopes with the card, and separate the cards (overseers/local). Finally at 9:25 PM the mission was accomplished except for address questions for the Boss lady. In all, there were "87" Christmas cards. My fingers hurt. HOOAAA!! Thu, 18 Dec 2014 08:45:09 EST Accountability It was indeed a beautiful day yesterday. Temperatures in the 70's and the sun was out. A great day for a bike ride. Am attempting to eliminate peanut butter from my diet. It's very habit forming, for me. I just can't seem to hold back my desires to have more and more. On Sunday I finished it off and don't plan on buying more for a long while. Sure bona miss that deliciously nasty stuff. HOOAAA!! Tue, 16 Dec 2014 07:11:14 EST Accountability Had a bike ride scheduled yesterday, but another flat spoiled the fun. Decided to switch wheels and put in some really heavy and longer lasting inner tubes. Discovered that what was causing some of the flats was a rear on the side of my almost new tire. Anyway, it took a while to switch wheels, cassettes and inner tubes. When finished, I was not in any mood to ride the bike so, I gave it a real good cleaning. HOOAAA!! Mon, 15 Dec 2014 08:40:04 EST Accountability It's Saturday morning and a very dreary day. There's fog in the air so, visibility is not too good. Dangerous for cyclists. Especially me cause I don't have lights in the front of the bike. So, I'll just have to wait until it clears up a bit. But cycle I will do. HOOAAA!! Sat, 13 Dec 2014 09:15:48 EST Christmas Shopping I detest shopping in crowded places. It is for that reason that I shop at nice stores and avoid the K-mart/Walmarts of the world. In our house, the shopping for presents is mostly done by the Boss Lady. While she dislikes shopping, she doesn't trust me to pick presents that are reasonably priced. This year she did most of her Christmas shopping on-line at Macy's. Apparently, the latter had a nice sale and she spent $600+ that would normally have cost her over $1,400. I found that impressive. ... Fri, 12 Dec 2014 09:02:27 EST Accountability It's been an interestg December 2015, so far. While I haven't been real bad with my nutritional choices, it has not been real pretty. Thand God that the only thing that's on course, so far, is my cycling. If it weren't for that, I'd be in deep trouble. HOOAAA!! Wed, 10 Dec 2014 08:28:43 EST Accountability Have you had one of those where you just don't feel like doing it?? Today was my day. Just didn't want to get with the program. I persevered and did what I was supposed to do. Sure felt good. HOOAAA!! Tue, 9 Dec 2014 22:12:47 EST Oh Christmas Tree So, yesterday was the day to put up our Christmas tree. My wonderful wife has a thing about lights. She LOVES those little goodies. Every year we put oodles of lights on the tree. It's a major undertaking. This year I decided to count how many lights we put on the tree. Guess...........................2,100 miniature lights. To me, that's a bit excessive. But, she's in charge of the decorations so, no arguing cause she the boss applesauce. HOOAAA!! Mon, 8 Dec 2014 08:33:54 EST Accountability Pretty physically active day yesterday. Walked/trained the dogs; cycled for 2.5+ hours; and put up outside christmas lights. Would somebody please give me an AMEN?? HOOAAA!! Sat, 6 Dec 2014 09:13:59 EST
