BIGGIRL2082010's SparkPeople Blog BIGGIRL2082010's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Come on in - the water's fine! I have to admit, I'm feeling *much* better now. I may still *look* like a lump, but I feel stupendous!

It took a bit of doing to break the pattern of the last several months, but I am slowly getting back into the swing of the healthy lifestyle.

For the first few days, I simply made it a point to do *something* healthy each day - cook something delicious and yet healthy, walk maybe 20 minutes, get more sleep. That last one is a BIG one for me - I hadn't realised how terri... Sat, 20 Oct 2012 09:14:47 EST Feeling like a lump Yep.

It's been another couple of months since I got my bike and my Pace Gloves. Which should have been a couple of months of getting in some regular exercise and healthy eating.

Sadly, I gave in to the usual: work overload.

Which means I sit here two months later without much to show for it. I feel healthier because I *have* been eating much better. But my exercise has been close to zero except for the few times (maybe once a week? Sometimes less) that I rode ... Tue, 9 Oct 2012 10:57:19 EST TMTS? No, IMHO. LOL. Serious acronym overload, hunh? Sorry - couldn't resist!

So my friend thinks it's a case of TMTS (too much, too soon) as to my feet hurting after walking home the other day.

I will admit that I do tend to jump right in, head first, etc., into anything that I am enjoying. When they were handing out patience? I was probably line hopping, looking for something more interesting. Patience has *never* been one of my virtues.

Persistence has. :)

However, ... Fri, 24 Aug 2012 12:22:17 EST Tender tootsies? So, I'd planned to bike to work yesterday, right?

Well, I stayed playing on my computer until it was late enough that I decided to just take the streetcar instead. Wearing my fun new sandals.

Wore them all day at work, again immensely annoying my pals at work by constantly telling them how *comfy* my feet were. My pals tend to wear pretty shoes, heeled and otherwise, that occasionally pinch their feet ...

But, as I said, I felt like I was walking on air all d... Thu, 23 Aug 2012 05:44:24 EST Love at first step! Did anyone know there's a whole "barefoot" trend in shoes?

I didn't.

Well, I'd seen the Vibram Five Finger shoes, but dismissed them as a fad - one that I'd love to try, but still a fad.

My regular shoes (a few-months old pair of Merrells) have been, quite simply hurting my feet - giving me two painful callouses, one on each foot. The callouses have been pretty much a part of my life since about 3 days into wearing the shoes, and my previous shoes had given m... Wed, 22 Aug 2012 06:33:01 EST Overuse ... and navel gazing Did you know you can get an overuse injury within 2 short weeks?

Well, DUH!

That's what ALL the exercise blogs and fitness experts warn you about: doing too much too soon!

So, there I was, with my brand-new bike, determined to make good use of it.

I did.

5 miles to work, 5 miles back.

Every day.

Within two *days*, my elbows were hurting, rather badly. I could feel the tendonitis planning an attack. (No, I've not act... Sat, 18 Aug 2012 10:37:31 EST Having fun! Yep.

Me and my bike.

Did I mention it's yellow?

It actually is.

There were other options, of course, but who wouldn't fall in love with a buttery yellow bike?

And my helmet almost coordinates (slightly different shade of yellow, but hey, there's a whole body between helmet and bike).

So this morning, after much hemming and hawing ("It's HOT out! And... Mon, 16 Jul 2012 22:23:45 EST Instant Gratification That's pretty much my favourite thing - instant gratification.

In all aspects of life.

So it's not really surprising that I gain weight rather easily ... for me, gratification seems to come from eating, not from feeling virtuous about not giving in to temptation.

This past 2 weeks, though?

I've managed to set aside the instant gratification I get from eating for smaller pleasures ...noticing that my pants aren't choking me at the waist, for instanc... Mon, 16 Jul 2012 03:58:30 EST Pressing the RESET button Yep.

You got it.

Another few months have passed, and it's now officially the second half of the year.

The first half? It was great in many, *many* ways.

Let's just say it might have been a little TOO great in some, hmm?

Like, of course, eating.

Because I don't believe in "BAD FOODS", I tend to allow pretty much everything in my diet. Usually, I try to stay aware of the items that are calorie dense. However, for the past couple ... Mon, 2 Jul 2012 11:31:45 EST FEBRUARY????? Really? Sigh.

Not just February, but almost Valentine's Day - which means to say almost half the month of February is over! That's almost 1/10th of the year GONE!

Heh.

Just after I wrote my last blog, I was visited by the world's worst cough - which soon turned into the world's worst cough-and-cold, and then retreated into just being the world's worst cold.

So there I was, barely able to breathe without hacking up half a lung.

What do you think ... Sun, 12 Feb 2012 10:45:16 EST HAPPY NEW YEAR! That's pretty much it! Hope you're all having a fabulous start to 2012!

I've just completed 5 weeks of Insanity. And am realising that THAT was the easy bit.

This week, the workouts get TOUGH. Longer, for one: averaging an hour instead of 40 minutes or less. And tougher mentally from the looks of it.

Oh, well, it is what it is. There are only two possibilities: do the workouts or don't do them.

Right now, I am in a "DO them" mood, so that's the pl... Mon, 2 Jan 2012 07:26:42 EST Week 3 of Insanity: Complete Busy again, so just a quick update here.

I've managed to stick with the Insanity workouts for another whole week. Yay! That leaves just 6 weeks to go.

Of course, the last time I tried Insanity, I only GOT to about day 2 of week 4 ... That's not happening this time, though, I plan to keep going and going until the bitter end.

Food wise, I am still eating like there's no tomorrow ... my moderation phase didn't last very long. However, the workouts are intense, a... Sat, 17 Dec 2011 16:13:58 EST July to December - no change?

I have been off SP for ages now, mostly because of work pressures (12 hour days like everyone else), but also because I just moved into a new condo and have been procrastinating on all sorts of move-related issues. :)

Status? Pretty much status quo, I think. I've not been doing much, so had gained a bit more over July, but for the past two weeks I've been watching what goes into my mouth (it's not pretty... Sat, 10 Dec 2011 07:09:09 EST Prioritising me Yes, that is what I am trying to do these days.

I did say "trying".

That means I'm not there 100% yet.

I am working on it.

So far, it's meant paying attention to what I am doing.

And you ask, "what exactly *is* that?"

Oh, let me see.

I've been eating everything in sight. Emotional eating? Not so much. It's more of a conditioned reflex. You know - see food, eat it. See more food, eat that, too. Think about food: go o... Fri, 15 Jul 2011 05:53:47 EST Excuses That's all they are, folks.

Yes, I've been busy.

"Too busy" to cook.

"Too busy" to work out.

And I have a long commute.

None of that has stopped me from making the time to eat out a couple of times this week (actually sitting in the restaurant at lunch time) and it's only Wednesday. :)

So, I say, excuses.

I could make time to do the healthy stuff.

I am choosing not to, mostly because I am buying into my ow... Wed, 1 Jun 2011 22:08:38 EST Busy That's pretty much it.

Thought the worst was behind me, but I guess I'm going to have to just deal with "busy" as a way of life for the next few months. :)

Trying to get in my exercise - not doing that makes me antsy.

Enjoy your spring and summer! Fri, 20 May 2011 06:46:57 EST Should overweight/obesity carry a stigma? I was reading another blog here on SP. One that points out the growing stigma against overweight/obese/plain-old-fat people. And urges all readers to take a kinder, more compassionate view of the larger people they may encounter all too frequently, especially in North America.

That made me think.

**************************
*** Warning: Many readers are likely to get mad at me and this blog. Go right ahead. ***
**************************

Hmm.
<B... Sun, 8 May 2011 09:26:31 EST Insanity Day 24: Cardio Power and Resistance So.

Taking a week off from Insanity, no matter the reason?

A bad idea.

I was terrified that I'd be horribly out-of-shape when I did the workouts again, and Monday was ultra-busy, so I didn't start with Day 22 on Monday. Forced myself to do it yesterday - that was Pure Cardio plus the Cardio Abs workout. Tough workout, but I actually felt strong and did ALL the exercises (maybe to prove something to myself!) without any breaks (Pure Cardio takes no breaks, jus... Wed, 27 Apr 2011 07:20:26 EST Life + work = A break from Insanity Yep. Really. I've not done a single Insanity workout this week. Waaah.

And yet, that's perfectly okay by me.

Work was crazy busy - or at least *I* was crazy busy with work. :) Add to that a 2 to 2.5-hour commute each way, and you'll understand why I decided it simply wasn't worth the stress of trying to figure out when to fit in a workout and still manage to eat healthy, get enough sleep, etc.

So I've taken the whole week off - hadn't meant to, but one day rol... Sun, 24 Apr 2011 18:00:32 EST Anatomy of a PURR-fect day! Insanity, Tim Burton and a movie, too! 240

That's what yesterday was - totally PURR-fect!

I took a mental-health day off from work - I keep working long hours on regular weekdays, which means I rarely accomplish all the non-work related things that can only be done Monday through Friday, 9 to 5. And yesterday was my target day for doing a zillion things!

The day started early, as mine always does - up by 4:30, lazed around for a half hour and then rushed to get into my workout clothes an... Sat, 16 Apr 2011 09:58:16 EST Insanity Day 20: Cardio Power and Resistance Another fun one. Even managed to keep up during the floor work.

Yay.

20 days done. Just 40 to go. Fri, 15 Apr 2011 08:03:58 EST Insanity Day 19: Cardio Recovery 248

This one gets more fun each time I do it. But those sustained lunges and squats are KILLER!

Looking forward to the day when I can stay low through that entire section (not yet!)

20 40

19 days done. Just 41 to go! :) Thu, 14 Apr 2011 06:58:25 EST Insanity Day 18: Pure Cardio AND Cardio Abs Okay, finally a double workout.

Did them both.

Forgot that Pure Cardio takes ZERO breaks after the warm-up and stretch.

Yiiii.

Worked HARD! Had to strip off my T-shirt halfway through, because it was sopping wet! Gah. My abs look NOTHING like the abs on those chicks in the DVDs. :D

But hey, I was comfortable (more comfortable, anyway, than with wet, sticky T-shirt hugging me. :)

The ab work? Hmmmm. NOT as intense as P90X's Ab... Wed, 13 Apr 2011 07:12:07 EST Insanity Day 17: Plyometric Cardio Circuit The workouts continue to work.

And so do I.

I'm now taking almost no breaks - just a couple on the hardest parts of the floor work.

Today, I found myself able to do several of the "Level 1 drill" - burpee, pushups, plank runs, repeat, and several side-back-side ski jumps and then several plank-in-out jumps, too.

And for the first time, my heart rate stayed at 160 to 175 throughout the workout - I guess that until now all the breaks were why I stay... Tue, 12 Apr 2011 06:35:58 EST Insanity Day 16: Second Fit Test After 3 whole rest days (never mind - I had a real pain in the neck!) I was really thinking my Fit Test today would be awful.

Here are the results:

Date 03/27/11 04/11/11
Switch Kicks 80 114
Power Jacks 36 47
Power Knees 75 64
Power Jumps 37 37
Globe jumps 7 19
Suicide Jumps 8 9
Push-up Jacks 18 20
Low Plank Obliques 54 56

Wheee.

Not awful at all.

I improve... Mon, 11 Apr 2011 07:26:38 EST Don't look over your shoulder! No.

I am not being philosophical and telling you to live in the present.

That's a note to myself to not look over my left shoulder.

Somehow, while asleep Friday night, I pulled something in my upper back that ONLY hurts when I twist my neck to look over my left shoulder. Yesterday, it hurt BADLY, so I decided discretion was the better part of valour, and didn't do the Insanity workout.

Injury is NOT a good thing to push.

Today, though, ... Sun, 10 Apr 2011 08:17:32 EST One dinner = 7,000 calories? 40 Really? 40

Because, yesterday morning, the Wii Snot put my weight two whole pounds higher than the day before.

See, on Thursday, I went out to dinner with my friend. Knowing I was going to do that, lunch was light and healthy.

Still, dinner was a BIG bowl of pho (no noodles - just the meat and the broth) and some deadly spring rolls. I could have not eaten the spring rolls, but I did. I left half the meat in the bowl, but drank almos... Sat, 9 Apr 2011 07:31:06 EST Breaking the streak Yep. Skipped Insanity today. Got home late after work last night, was tired, but too wired to fall asleep - wound up awake till almost midnight.

And then, wouldn't you know it, my internal alarm wakes me up at 4:30 again. I was just too exhausted to work out (or at least I convinced myself I was) and so I just stayed in bed and read a book and then headed off to work.

The current plan is to either double up on workouts tomorrow (far from ideal) or to do today's workout t... Fri, 8 Apr 2011 20:58:42 EST Insanity Day 11: Cardio Recovery! Whee!

I always dread this one going in (always??? I've done it exactly ONE time before today!), and initially it totally justifies that dread (lots and lots of staying in low squat position - MAJOR burn), but then the last 6 or seven minutes of stretches make it totally worth the workout - it's just such a soothing way to end the workout!

Thirty minutes only. But a good, sweaty 30 minutes!

248

49 days to go! :) Thu, 7 Apr 2011 06:10:25 EST Insanity Day 10: Plyometric Cardio Circuit 248

Did this workout this morning, then got swamped with the usual routine and was completely swamped at work, too. Busy is good, but it's also great to have a few minutes to just breathe.

The workouts are definitely getting to feel more familiar. I completed most of this one without breaks, but every single time I *took* a break, I was sweating like crazy and breathing hard.

Another feel-good workout. I love that for the first month, the workouts a... Wed, 6 Apr 2011 21:45:01 EST Insanity Day 9: Pure Cardio 248

Yiii!

How did I forget how tough this one is? This time through the workout, I took *very* few breaks - just two, I think, one during the floor work (the crazy burpee, pushups, plank runs routine still exhausts me almost immediately) and then again during the pushup jacks.

Wait - BOTH of those are the floor work segments - I guess that is where I need to work harder so I can build my endurance for that kind of exercise!

Oh, and beca... Tue, 5 Apr 2011 06:53:14 EST Insanity Day 8: Cardio Power and Resistance My second time through this workout.

Again, as I find myself more familiar with the moves, I'm able to go just a little harder on each exercise.

This time, I actually did several of the moving pushups (like the pushup jacks, but "just" a step to the side each time) before my knees hit the ground. And in the final set, I did *all* the plank runs! Whee!

My core is definitely getting stronger. Not enough that I have any visible abs, but at least I feel stronger. ... Mon, 4 Apr 2011 06:44:55 EST Insanity Day 7: Rest day! Whee! Today is a day off from the workouts.

No, that doesn't mean I stay in bed all day (well, maybe it does). I'll probably wind up walking either one mile to go to the grocery store near home, or 3 if I head for the further away, has-*good*-produce one. :)

I'm kinda weird that way - if I'm getting root veggies, I'll go with any old store, because I just make stew-like things from those, but if I'm making stir-fries, or eating the veggies in salads, then I want the pret... Sun, 3 Apr 2011 05:49:11 EST Insanity Day 6: Plyometric Cardio Circuit Yep. 248

Just as I remembered, this one is a killer workout. All the jumping is probably doing something good for me - all I know I was spent, used up, wasted, exhausted by the time this one ended.

And it's not even like I did every exercise for as long as they did - I just tried to keep up, but the floor work is still too tough for me.

Let's see, the circuit goes something like this:
Insane burpees (jump up, squat down, jump back into plank,... Sat, 2 Apr 2011 07:20:18 EST Insanity Day 5: Pure Cardio Hmmmm.

This is weird.

My body hasn't changed physically. I am NOT leaner.

But just the 2 weeks of doing P90X made me stronger (I can *definitely* feel *that*), and now, just 5 days into Insanity, things are again getting easier.

Don't get me wrong, this is a TOUGH workout.

But I find that I am already able to actually complete most of it without taking breaks.

So either my cardio-vascular abilities have improved vastly in just... Fri, 1 Apr 2011 06:03:59 EST Insanity Day 4: Cardio Recovery Hmm - remember how cynical I was yesterday, expecting today to be another killer workout?

I kid you not - today was comparatively a breeze!

Lots of stretching, loads and loads of it. And I guess the few days I did Yoga X in P90X really helped my flexibility.

Dang. I wish there were more hours in the day, I'd be doing both P90X and Insanity - they each have their strengths!

But for now, I'm sticking with Insanity. Mostly because it's just plain old F... Thu, 31 Mar 2011 21:42:51 EST Insanity Day 3: Cardio Power and Resistance This one, amazingly, didn't feel as tough as Monday's workout. I was just as sweaty when I ended, but maybe this one used more moves that I am familiar with.

I can totally see how these workouts would stress you and push your limits, no matter HOW fit you are, because you are going to your own personal max in each of these circuits.

This is WHY interval training is so effective, because there is *always* room for improvement.

Wiped, but happy.

Now... Wed, 30 Mar 2011 07:07:11 EST Insanity interrupted! No particular reason. I overslept, woke up, went back to sleep AGAIN! :)

And then didn't have the time when I woke up the second time.

So. No Insanity today. Drat!

Tomorrow.

I know, manana! And what's wrong with that? :)

Today was a bright, sunshiny day here in Toronto, which just lifted *everyone's* spirits - it was SUCH a great day to be alive! We really love sunshine here, because of the huge number of overcast days.

Would ... Tue, 29 Mar 2011 20:18:31 EST Insanity Day 2: Plyometric Cardio Circuit As expected, this was a tough workout.

15 minutes of brutal warm up and stretching, twenty minutes of intense cardio, 5 minutes of cooldown.

It was insane, all right. 40 minutes of GO-GO-GO cardio.

Can *you* do burpees to exhaustion? I cannot.

20

I did as many as I could with good form, took short breaks (10 seconds or less) and modified when I couldn't keep good form any more. That was what I did for a whole lot of the actu... Mon, 28 Mar 2011 08:45:19 EST Insanity Day 1: Fit Test 248

PHEW!

Switch Kicks 80
Power Jacks 36
Power Knees 75
Power Jumps 37
Globe jumps 8
Suicide Jumps 7
Push-up Jacks 18
Low Plank Obliques 54

My numbers are not stellar (I think they may have been counting one left+one right as ONE rep in the low-plank obliques, which means MY number is really only 27, which sounds more appropriate, given how fit the two in the DVD are.

Also, I guess I cheated and took a... Sun, 27 Mar 2011 10:42:37 EST P90X Day 14: REST! Last week, on Day 7, I did the X Stretch, and it felt great.

This week, though, I am not sure why - either I "brung it" more, or I didn't stretch quite enough each day - but I wound up feeling really wasted yesterday after the Kenpo X and the Ab Ripper X. Not right after, but late in the day.

So I decided that for this week, today, REST would be a great idea.

Today, I did NOTHING.

Absolutely nothing.

(Well, okay, the laundry ...)
<B... Sat, 26 Mar 2011 16:07:11 EST Revisiting Rewards 189

I was pondering some stuff about how "acting as if" something is already true often makes it true. For me, that actually works.

Anyway, somehow that whole train of thought got me thinking. And after a couple of wild leaps of association (I have NO clue what those were), I think I had a light bulb moment.

Wait.

189

See, I think I've been thinking about rewards all wrong.

Rewards need to be something (ot... Fri, 25 Mar 2011 13:54:11 EST P90X Day 13: Kenpo X and Ab Ripper X Oh, BOY! What a fun workout!

Yesterday, someone on the P90X team said how they felt if they didn't really push out and hyperextend the punches and kicks, they're not feeling like they really bring it. So today I paid close attention to what I was doing.

And realised that that was exactly why I had found the workout way easier than expected last Friday - today, when I really focused, twisted at the waist with every punch, moved my feet/ankles as the demonstrators were doi... Fri, 25 Mar 2011 11:59:40 EST P90X Day 12: Legs and Back No. I didn't skip a day of the P90X. I just didn't feel like blogging twice in ONE day. :)

Yesterday, I did Yoga X and today I did the Legs and Back workout. I'll admit - I didn't do the Ab Ripper X today.

Why not? Because after yesterday's blog, I got myself tied up in knots internally, so decided (knowing it was a bad idea) to eat. And eat.

I am just about done with that, but my tummy obviously isn't feeling nice and light. :) So I promise - Ab Ripper X tomo... Thu, 24 Mar 2011 15:38:46 EST Why do I need to WORK for approval? Heh.

Doing a bit of soul-searching here.

I was just listening to Dimitra (ANEPANALIPTI) on her vlog from yesterday

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=4111714
(To really get where she's coming from, you probably need to have been following her blogs for a while - but even with just this blog, there is some really powerful insight there!)

Here is the thing.

I think most of us feel "unworthy" in som... Wed, 23 Mar 2011 08:00:53 EST P90X Day 10: Shoulders & Arms; Ab Ripper X Yep.

248

One more day completed.

Yesterday and today, I awoke late, got hungry and ate breakfast, and then couldn't bring myself to workout until later in the day.

You know what? That doesn't work so well for me. I am a morning person. I need to get done the important stuff ASAP when I wake up, otherwise procrastination really makes it difficult to get out of whatever inertia-inducing thing I've latched on to for the day.

So, ... Tue, 22 Mar 2011 16:11:07 EST P90X: I goofed. 20

Hah.

Turns out the routine outlined in the P90X Lean Program is actually intended to be a *second* workout each day, on TOP of the original P90X Classic program.

D-UH.

That will teach me to rush through the instruction manual, huh?

Okay.

I did complete what I thought was Day 9, the Cardio X workout.

I will evaluate whether I want to start over completely from scratch, or whether, perhaps, I just want t... Mon, 21 Mar 2011 15:34:29 EST P90X Day 8: Core Synergistics Today is the first day of Week 2 of the Lean Program of P90X.

This week will be a repeat of last week, but hopefully with better form on the moves, more control.

Today felt a LOT tougher than the first time I did this Core Synergistics workout.
