BEYONDLIMITS's SparkPeople Blog BEYONDLIMITS's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Removing obstacles Well, since my last post wherein I confessed to having slipped in my efforts to maintain my previous fitness goals, I have done a complete turnaround. Here are some of the things that helped make the change:

I read:

Infinite Possibilities by Mike Dooley

Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman, M.D.

I started chanting the mantra Om Gum Ganapatayei Namaha (Removing of Obstacles) with Deva Premal on Youtube:

Thu, 14 Jun 2012 11:48:40 EST OMG! Did I ever go off track I’m going to try to make this short because I don’t want to dwell on the negative, but these past five months have been truly difficult for me. Somewhere along the way I lost my mojo.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I gave up; I just started doing things without my spirit being there. I think it started when I decided I wasn’t going to train for any races. I’ve been financially pressed. I’m still looking for employment, have gone to the temp agencies, have talked to friends, have... Wed, 23 May 2012 11:47:31 EST I made it! I ran my first half marathon! That was yesterday. It was a chilly morning in Walnut Creek. As we drove to the location of the half marathon, we admired the lunar eclipse. It seemed auspicious that the eclipse would be taking place on the morning of my first half marathon.

Astrologist, Ralphee Finn, writes of the lunar eclipse: During a lunar eclipse, conscious concerns override unconscious ones. Eclipses tend to distort time, so put aside any expectations that any of your plans will go smoothly. (Then you can... Sun, 11 Dec 2011 11:06:33 EST Halloween Delights! I used to think the best thing about Halloween was the candy. So sweet and sugary my eyes would pulse from overindulging in so much sugar.

Now that I’m older though, the best part of Halloween is seeing how innovative people can get with putting together their costumes. I went to a parade this morning on Piedmont Avenue and I saw so many adults with their kids and their dogs dressed for the occasion, that it was a feast for the eyes. Here are some of my favorites

<img s... Sun, 30 Oct 2011 00:20:29 EST Trouble in Paradise I thought I had planned everything very well for the eleven days I would be dog sitting for my son while he and his fiancé were in Malaysia. It had been two months since I’d last done so at my place, but now I was staying at my son’s condo in San Francisco, watching Baguette again.

Well, you can plan and plan all you want but sometimes things have a way of turning out differently. Take for instance the... Wed, 14 Sep 2011 10:12:46 EST Ran my first 10K race today! Well, I ran my first 10K at 8:10 a.m. today. This was the Summer Breeze race in San Leandro, CA at Marina Park. It was the perfect morning for a race. The temperature at that hour was about 57 degrees. There were many runners since in addition to the 10K, there was a 5K, and a half marathon.

To train for the race, I was using the Galloway training for a 10K method which entails running for a period of time, and walking for a period of time. I was training at a run/walk of 2:1. Howe... Sat, 27 Aug 2011 20:34:41 EST August goals: My August goals are:

Run 55 miles this month

Complete weeks 10-13 Galloway 10K training

Run the Summer Breeze 10K on Aug. 27

Strength train 3x a week

Lose at least 2 pounds in August

Track my nutrition and fitness daily
Tue, 2 Aug 2011 16:53:49 EST Size 6, really?
The other day I went to J.C. Penney to check out their sales. I needed some new jeans because I noticed that the jeans I owned were starting to look a bit baggy. Plus, they were old.

Out of habit, I went to the size 10 jeans because that was the size of my old jeans. I got a pair that I liked, but then I went to the size 8 jeans and picked out a pair. Then my dream mind set in and I slid out a pair of size 6. I carried the fantasy to its end by taking all three pairs into th... Wed, 27 Jul 2011 10:48:37 EST One Way to Have a Great Weekend I’m all for boasting about having a great weekend and sharing the details. These moments are something to reflect upon when the chips are low. I had the opportunity to be treated by my best friend, Regina, to lunch at Rustic, located at the Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyserville, Sonoma County.

The lunch was tasty (pizza, mixed green salad, a glass of Director’s Cut Zinfandel 2007, lemon tart f... Mon, 25 Jul 2011 11:40:35 EST The Body You Always Wanted I love change, so I was happy to run across a recommendation on to check out Kelly Coffey-Meyer’s 30-Minutes to Fitness DVD. I liked her flat stomach on the cover. Something I have always dreamed of possessing but have never achieved.

I ordered the DVD last month and I’ve been using it three times a week since then. I noticed yesterday that I can now use 8 pound weights instead of t... Thu, 21 Jul 2011 12:12:27 EST Row, row, row your boat Last evening a very mild breeze wafting through my window caused me to look up then out. That’s when I noticed a nice hue to the sky. Instantly, I wanted to be outdoors, so I headed for the lake.

Lake Merritt is a ten minute walk away from my apartment. Its’ got a 3.1 mile walking and jogging path, and when I don’t have the time to walk the entire lake, I walk half way around. At the end of... Sun, 10 Jul 2011 21:26:26 EST Baguette is gone Baguette, my son's Irish Russell Terrier, was staying with me for two weeks but last night, he returned to his father's condo and I had to say my farewells to him.

It was hard because Baguette has such a warm and charming personality. He's the kind of puppy who when I took him to the dog park, dog owners forgot about their dogs and concentrated on Baguette.

<img src="http://... Mon, 4 Jul 2011 12:49:08 EST Lack of sleep - no 5K run I was supposed to run a 5K this a.m. but when my alarm clock went off, I succumbed to going back to sleep almost instantly.

Two hours later I awakened feeling good. I had been lacking sleep the last couple of days and I was feeling it in the way I was eating irrationally. Lots of starches, not enough protein.

Because I made up two hours of sleep this a.m. I'm hoping that I won't have trouble getting out of bed to do my 4 mile run tomorrow morning to keep up with my 10K ... Sun, 26 Jun 2011 21:43:00 EST Dining with Baguette

Baguette is the Irish Russell Terrier I’m watching for my son while he is on vacation. I enjoy my walks with him because he gets so much attention and it gives me a chance to engage with people who ordinarily wouldn’t pay me any mind.

Last week we went to the dog park. He had a great time with Bo, a dog that walked into a hous... Tue, 21 Jun 2011 11:22:06 EST Dog sitting and LOVING IT!

My son and his girlfriend are taking a trip to France so he asked if I would watch Baguette, his 6 month old Irish Russell Terrier. There wasn’t a chance in a million that I would say no. Baguette is irresistibly cute and so outgoing and playful that I would have to be made of stone to say no. Only problem is my apartment complex does not allow pets.

I’ve been living in this complex for over ten years. I... Wed, 15 Jun 2011 11:39:28 EST It didn't rain during my first 5K! It was the Lake Chabot Trail run in Castro Valley. It couldn't have been a more beautiful place to run at for my first 5K. The weatherman had predicted rain during the entire week, and it had rained yesterday. I was surprised, though, when I woke up this morning to silence. No rain drops, showers, or drips. It was overcast, but not one drop fell out of the sky while we ran. The gods seemed to be smiling down at us.

The terrain was hilly and I am not used to running on hills. This c... Sun, 5 Jun 2011 20:22:22 EST My first 5K is on Sunday and it might rain! I just found out yesterday after checking the weather report that there is a 60% chance that it will rain on Sunday, and it just happens to be the day that I will be running my first 5K.

The other piece of important information I learned is that the Lake Chabot trail run is hilly. Yikes! I thought I'd done enough research about the race site, I even drove there yesterday but it started pouring down rain and I didn't want to get out of my car to walk over to the trail to see what it... Wed, 1 Jun 2011 10:32:35 EST I lost another pound!!! I can't express how excited I am about seeing the needle move downward on the scale because for so long I was stuck on 137. I'd lose a half pound then gain a pound. This repetitive yo yo cycle haunted me. It wasn't until I joined Spark that now I have lost a total of 3 pounds since April 4 and that's the most I have lost in years.

For anyone who is having the same problem, I suggest that you don't give up. Get active, do the things you love to do for exercise and do it consistently... Thu, 26 May 2011 16:09:44 EST Does this ever happen to you? I am getting to know myself through and through by using the nutrition tracker as well as the fitness tracker. This is a good thing because the nutrition tracker forces me to be honest about what I’m eating, and I can’t deceive myself about the calorie count of a certain food in order to get away with eating twice the amount I should be eating.

One thing I’ve noticed lately is that I will eat at a certain hour simply because it’s the hour that I normally eat, whether I’m hungry or... Tue, 24 May 2011 22:54:58 EST Ahhhhh...magnificent sleep You know what it feels like. You awaken in the morning without that negative voice scolding you for what you did not accomplish yet, what you still need to do, what you did do that didn't work well, how you could have done something better, etc., etc. I call it the morning hag.

She turns up when I do not get enough sleep. However, last night I did, nine full hours of it. The difference with how I awakened this morning and the mornings when I don't get ample sleep is that the hag wa... Fri, 20 May 2011 15:06:16 EST Sleep Journal Slept 9 hours last night; however, I woke up at 2:30 a.m. to use the bathroom and couldn't get back to sleep for at least an hour.

Things I did:

Did my 40 minutes of strength training - for some reason I felt it more than the other times I did the same work out.

Vitamins taken: Folic Acid, Multi, calcium

Went to bed at 10:30.

I do have a lot on my mind in that I am looking for a new job, and that's what my mind lingered on while I attempt... My body is slightly sore, but I don't care because I'm getting my sleep. I slept 9 hours last night! 104 Thu, 5 May 2011 10:52:22 EST Sleep Journal - Day 9 Went to bed at 11 pm and awakened at 7 a.m. Slept for 8 hours. Felt great upon awakening

Last night, because I did the walk/run day 1 of the second week training for the 5K, I noticed that my glutes were really fired up. I could feel them aching.

I took a multivitamin and ate well yesterday. Wed, 4 May 2011 11:37:54 EST Sleep Journal - Day 8 Beyond a walk, I did not exercise yesterday. I took a multivitamin. Did not take Folic Acid because I took it with me when I spent the weekend at a friend's and couldn't find it anywhere when I got back home.

Long story short, I slept 8 hours. That sleep was much needed because I hadn't slept well the day before. Might have been the wine I drank at dinner, I don't know. Tue, 3 May 2011 15:38:07 EST Signed up for my first 5K It will be on June 5 at Lake Chabot Regional Park. I'm excited about it. Mon, 2 May 2011 00:02:01 EST Working out helps my sleep I've noticed that since I started working out, my sleep had improved from 6 hours a night to up to 10 hours a night! I feel so much calmer. I recommend working out to anyone having trouble sleeping. Fri, 29 Apr 2011 17:27:11 EST Sleep Journal - Day 5 Went to bed at 10 pm. Got up at 4:00 to go to the bathroom. Went back to bed and slept until 7:30. 10 hours sleep! Wed, 27 Apr 2011 11:25:16 EST Sleep Journal - Day 3 Went to bed at 10:00 p.m. Awakened at 1:30 to use the bathroom, then back to bed. Awakened at 8:15 a.m. Wow! I must have needed that sleep.

What I did different yesterday than the day before.

I took 2 Tylenol Allergy capsules.
Had pasta for dinner.
Strength trained for 30 minutes.

Tue, 26 Apr 2011 14:14:47 EST Sleep Journal - Day 2 Went to bed at 11:00 p.m. Woke up at 4:30 to use the bathroom. Went back to sleep and awakened at 6:30. I got a total of 7 hours sleep.

Yesterday, I did not take an hour long walk. I did take the folic acid, but not the Omega 3, multivitamin, or the calcium. I will do that today Mon, 25 Apr 2011 10:31:47 EST Sleep Journal - Day 1 I am starting this sleep journal to try to track when I am and am not sleeping well. About a week ago, before I read the article on sleep in SparkPeople, someone told me that taking folic acid might help me sleep better. I started taking it and almost immediately I was sleeping through the night and not waking up at 2:30 or 3:00 a.m. A month before that a friend told me that sometimes taking my multivitamin, calcium, and omega three capsule right before I went to bed could improve my sleep....
