BERNIE2952's SparkPeople Blog BERNIE2952's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Fabulous Birthday I had a great time this year with family and friends for my B'day. Of course the question of how old are you came up. I decided to knock ten years off my real age and see what happened. I was amazed how many people believed me. Friends Ive know for years "called" me on it but others just nodded in agreement. One of my older sisters actually said your still a baby! It was great fun but I don't feel the need to lie about my age for real. It is OK to be 64-now is that my real age or my pr... Sun, 1 Mar 2009 10:34:15 EST blurred vision is starting to...... focus and get off of the gloom and doom thoughts I have had lately. I realize that it is up to me to turn a frown into something better. To freely laugh and not be annoyed by silly things is a much better way to live.

Sometimes I have to slow down and take stock of self and surroundings. It is time to be thankful for the wonderful things in my life. I live in a comfortable house and I can still afford to heat it and pay taxes. Our newspapers are full of people out of work an... Sun, 8 Feb 2009 11:25:00 EST On going radiation treatment I finally realized I have not talked enough about how I feel about having breast cancer and the treatment. I started out with a positive feeling about my non invasive cancer, but as treatment goes on the daily reminder of yes I am being treated for brest cancer has worn me down a bit and I am depressed and my attitude in general has been kind of negative.

Each morning at 7:00 am I get a treatment. I have 12 more treatments to go. I am getting some skin burning and itching and h... Wed, 4 Feb 2009 10:09:28 EST February is a special month for me Well as we glide into Febuary I am not thinking Spring yet but my birthday and Valentines day. I already told DH I would like to go see a movie for heart day. Any good suggestions? I know it is not romantic but I hear Slum dog millionaire is really good. As for my b'day out to dinner at Charlie Browns and I visit with our daughter. I may get my hair done -it is past chin length and I think I need it shaped up. I am going to try a new place that is walk-in but they do more styling than ... Sun, 1 Feb 2009 12:02:08 EST first treadmill day I was encourage by some Sparks People who are doing daily treadmill time. Today at work I had free time so I used it for excercise instead of reading as aI normally do. I enjoyed the time I spent on the treadmill. It was not difficult but could become a little boring unless I bring music with me. I am devoting more to thinking of ways to add excerise to my days. I have also walk outside but it is kind of cold for that. I believe excercise is the answer for losing additional weight but I... Fri, 23 Jan 2009 17:22:04 EST Status quo I am staying in my calorie range but have not stepped up the excercise. I have turned down choc. cake at work and felt good about that. I eat more fruit then I did before. Small changes but I think they can make a big change in the long run.

I am mid way in my breast radiation and I feel OK. Treatments intterupt my day very little. Next step will be preventive meds. I feel very fortunate that I am doing well. I am thinking of doing a walk for fight for the cure for cancer. ... Thu, 22 Jan 2009 17:56:41 EST 10,000 steps The pedometer is really motivating me to keep moving around. I park farther away from stores. I volunteer to go get things or make copies which means going up stairs. I like the way if feel which means I have more energy and also rest better.

We will be going to relatives for dinner this week-end and then Sunday watching the Eagles-Cardinal play off game on Sunday. Thu, 15 Jan 2009 17:21:56 EST arobic Bernie Yeah I actually walked during my break at work for 25 min. I was really pleased with myself for working harder to get fit. I also plan on using the treadmill on the cold days this week. I feel like I am ready to invest more in my program now.

I am doing well with portion control and eating healthy so now I have to add some other things that complete the program for me. Tue, 13 Jan 2009 16:55:54 EST slow on computer Since Easy January challenge is my first attempt at a challenge, I found out I need to know my way around the SP site to keep up with excercise, food, and making entries on other member, etc etc.

So I may not have posted much but I have been trying to keep up with things. I have lost about a pound and I definitely am staying in my calorie range. Sun, 11 Jan 2009 21:00:12 EST January Challenge and more Much better than resolutions is a challenge especially when its with a group of great people. I have not put a #on the weight I would like to lose but I will be happy with any loss that I maintain. I have been on a plateau for a while so I know I have to dig deep to see a difference. My cholesterol readings are much better since I lost some weight so that is a really good motivator.

I had 3 abdominal surgeries so my middle is not exactly tight but I know it could firm up a bit... Sat, 3 Jan 2009 16:38:13 EST Really ready for the new year I am looking forward to a special year for me. I know I can stay motivated and at a regular pace lose weight. I am going to strive to do more excercise at home and look into a pilates class near by. I enjoy mild excersize but sometimes that isn't enough so I may need to jump back on the Jillian Micheals cd. If I could do mild excerise and the tape that would be awesome.

The things I mentioned are not New years resolutions but healthy plans for me to stay fit and enjoy life. ... Tue, 30 Dec 2008 10:33:32 EST Christmas I am enjoying my holiday very much by singing Christmas carols in the car and visiting new and old friends alike. The gifts this year were thoughtful and some were hand made.

I just found out my oldest sister has been in the hospital for a week. Marie is 83 and deaf and difficult to help. At first I was sad that a neighbor had to email me with the news and I had not been more diligent in keeping in touch with the neighbor. I have tried to help her in the past so I am just th... Thu, 25 Dec 2008 09:06:58 EST Gain a pound
I want to wish everyone a joyful holiday and a safe New year.

I have not been on SP much lately but I have been watching what I eat and sneaking in some excercise. I remember many diets that I quit after the holidays or started after the holidays but this time I am able to say I am not over doing it and feel that I may gain a lb. but that is easier to take off than say 5 lbs. 252 Tue, 23 Dec 2008 07:40:43 EST Blog Friends Dorene and Marty thank you for your thoughtful comments. I know breast cancer has touched many people in one way or another, but I believe that progress has been made.

I hope you are both planning a spectacular holiday. I will be with my daughter and friends of 30 years. Marty have you had time to decorate your new place? and Dorene what would be your favorite Christmas dinner to make? Bernie Thu, 11 Dec 2008 16:33:45 EST Christmas and Radiation treatment Hi all I am getting ready for the holiday. I have the tree up and out side decorations. Next I plan on baking cookies. I have the pizelles made and plan on doing short bread cookies and biscotti. I guess you can tell I don't like real sweet cookies. Anyone have a recipe I could try? I need something new.

In January I will start radiation and then go on an anti cancer drug like tamoxifin. I feel very lucky I am not scheduled for chemo. I realize that breast cancer is very ... Wed, 10 Dec 2008 17:17:59 EST Appts are made and referrals are taken care of. I have been reading on line and I better understand the need for a team of Drs. Bernie Tue, 25 Nov 2008 17:08:31 EST Same old same old Back to Dr. for results of breast surgery and she says all went well but I need to see oncologist and radiologist for next steps. Well I have made appts but feel as though they are dragging this thing out. I hope that cancer doc and radiologist agree I don't need radiation cause I'm thinking of saying "No thank you" Cause this is just unnecessary unless you can prove other wise to me. I was thinking Thanksgiving would be the end of this medical issue but looks like it will be closer to C... Mon, 17 Nov 2008 17:12:03 EST Feeling good I am pretty much back to my old self again. I did some light cleaning today and yesterday I went to my GP for a Med change. I had been taking 80 mg of simvastatin for cholostorol but it made my legs ache. Any way I totally stopped taking it and I was 1000% better in a week. Then I cut the pills in half so I was taking 40mg and felt fine. My Dr. just confirmed what I had done but it was good to know I'm on the right track. Anyone elsse have trouble with statins because they are know for... It meant a lot to me.

The Dr. told my DH that all had gone as expected with no surprises. We are both relieved. I have an appt with Dr. Nov. 20th. She gave me some percocet for the pain but I have only taken 2 so far. I took today and Friday off from work I am wearing an ace bandage to keep everthing in place. Thu, 13 Nov 2008 14:40:47 EST Today is the day It's 7AM and I am ready to go to the hospital for my lumpectomy. I have a local to my breast and then I go to mammagram and they place a wire to mark the location for the surgeon. Then they give me twlight drugs by IV and then the surgeon takes out the lump and marginal areas. I go to recovery and home same day with a lovely ace bandage and an ice pack.

I am alittle worried but I believe everthing will be OK. I will have this behind me soon I hope. Wed, 12 Nov 2008 07:19:14 EST JM CD rocks my butt OK so I am not doing the excerise cd every day but I am staying with it. I did it on Friday and again today Monday. I also saw an article in Women's Day that is simular plan as Jillian Micheals 3 min strength 2 min arobic and 1 min abs. This one is quick walk in place instead of jumping jacks which I am getting better at but this softer version will be great on days I am beat. I am finally in the zone when it comes to excercise and I am glad . I use to walk at least 1 and 1/2 miles 5 day... Mon, 10 Nov 2008 17:43:39 EST Movin on down I got weighed this morning and was hoping for at least 1 lb loss cause I have been at 175 for at least 2 wks. Good news I lost 2.5 lbs and I am as happy as can be. I am being successful and you guys have been a part of that success. Thanks for your support.

I look forward to lossing more weight and keeping it off. I will continue to excercise and make good eating choices and espicailly remember to like myself. Bernie 244 Sun, 9 Nov 2008 08:54:27 EST Friday workout I did my 20 min workout and was glad to get it in today. It may take me a little longer to "shred" with Jillian but I am in for the long haul.

At school today we had a bomb threat so we evacuated one of our building and the police and dog teams came to do a complete search--it took 2 hours. We went to our other buliding and did our best to keep the kids busy. School problems are so different than I remember but we kept all the kids safe.

This week end is get some ... Fri, 7 Nov 2008 17:31:33 EST working hard I got the lead out and did the 20min of level one again and I can feel the difference in my clothes from just these few work outs.

Today I came home from work and was really tired. I didn't do the tape but tommorrow is a must. I actually enjoy doing the tape and working up a sweat. This is something new for me and I like it! Bernie Thu, 6 Nov 2008 17:50:47 EST Benifits of excercise I have now been doing the J micheal's tape for 4 days and I am getting a little better at it. I can see that the intensity for 20 minutes does jack up my metabilism. So a short time but hard work is fine by me. I am sore but that's OK cause it means my muscles are working hard. I am really going to need a a pep talk often to keep this up for 30 days. I want to push on but will I? Tue, 4 Nov 2008 15:57:07 EST Jillian Micheals kicked my butt Well watching the tape was useless so I got going and did it I am not in good enough shape to even totally do level 1 but I know if I keep at it it will get easier. I plan on trying to do it as soon as I get home from work at 4:00 pm. Instead of vegging in a chair watching TV I will use that time better. I am psched. 104 Sat, 1 Nov 2008 17:03:27 EST Many thanks Many thanks for hanging in there with me on this issue. I am scheduled for the lumpectomy on Nov. 12th. Tortlove RodeoMom,Life's 2 short and Marty you have been solid supporters and I thank you. Please let me know how things have been going for you. Did you make it throught Halloween without too much candy anxiety??

I have been eating OK but have not used my new Jillian Micheals work out tape. I have to get with the program and make excercise a priority each day. I think if ... Fri, 31 Oct 2008 23:17:29 EST Doc. finally called Hello all, I talked to my doc. on weds. evening. She said I have a Duct carcinoma in situ. She told me it is non-invasive or contained in a milk duct. It is not life threatening but I should get a lumpectomy done for this pre cancer change in cells. I am happy that it appears to be a small problem and can be taken care of. She apologized for not getting to me sooner but she had looked at all my old records including the ones from another hospital and they all seem to jive as to location... Thu, 30 Oct 2008 20:47:53 EST still waiting Normally when something like waiting for results this long I would be feeding my face because I am the person who needs the information and no one seems to give a damn if I hear what's going on

Today after work I called radiology and they told me I needed to call my Dr. for any results. OK I call the surgical team and guess what my Dr. is off today and other Drs in practice only give their patients results. Now I have to make an appt with my Dr. to discuss results. I am sched... Tue, 28 Oct 2008 17:35:53 EST No results yet That's right this Monday will be 6 days and I'd like to hear something by then. In the mean time I managed to get a roaring urinary track infection. Thus. after work I called the Dr. and God was with me cause she had a cancelation and I could go right over. My temmp was 102 and the nurse said"no wonder you don't feel well. I gave them a sample and they said it was positive. Anyway I got a shot of antibotic in my butt and was given 2 advil. Doc gave me a script and said temp would probab... Sun, 26 Oct 2008 16:00:10 EST Needle Biopsy went very well I took myself to the appt. for the ultrasound guided needle biopsy. I was getting a bit edgy waiting for my turn but once they called me it was smooth sailing. The Dr was ace's. He explained what was going to happen and chatted with me while he prepared for the proceedure. He numbed my right breast and checked to see if I could feel the needle he would use. I was able to watch the whole thing with no discomfort. He took five samples for the lab and then placed a tytanium staple at the s... Wed, 22 Oct 2008 17:21:30 EST A fun time Saturday nite My DH and I went out with 2 other couples on SSaturday nite. We had a drink and some snacks at someone house and the went to the Olive Tree resterurant and enjoyed great Greek food. I had Striped Bass grilled and it was delicious. We also tried the octupus appetizer and were surprized how good it was. We went back to Maureen's house and played pool and had a few more drinks. I woke up with a headache the next day but wasn't sure if it was from my sinuses or drinking. Today was very loww... Sun, 19 Oct 2008 15:47:20 EST Set for needle biopsy OK so I had yet another sonogram of a small area on my right breast and they see "something" so the biopsy will be done with those pictures on Tuesday October 21 at 9AM It is a much easier procedure. They use lightocain to numb the area and take tiny sample out. Whole thing done in 1 hour.

I am not afraid. I have taken the day off even though she said people go to work. I plan on meeting my husband for lunch

Thanks to all who wrote about my job. I spent today doing... Wed, 15 Oct 2008 17:15:07 EST Job woes and health issues Well to day at work my boss told me he was approached by 2 separate people who said I have been seen doing crossword puzzles during the work day, reading email(work) and socializing in the teachers lounge. I thanked him for telling me but I also said these seemed rather nit picking. Of course the crossword puzzles will cease and I will read work emails at work but at a different time and the socializing will continue but in a limited way. Generally at work I fly below the radar so this sud... Tue, 14 Oct 2008 21:24:14 EST A work in progress Life is a journey that develops our character, emotional strength and our spiritual nature. The challenge is letting your goals be your guide and with free choice explore your possibilities. I have taken "the road less traveled" on some occasions.
