BARBARASDIET's SparkPeople Blog BARBARASDIET's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community One of my many pet peeves People, seriously? Adding me as a friend when I have no clue who you are? I don't want to be on your page as a friend unless I have had some positive connection with you.

Maybe it shouldn't annoy me like this but it is one of those little things that gets under my skin somehow. Wed, 12 Mar 2014 17:04:34 EST This no wheat thing seems to work for me I don't like not eating bread, etc., but it does seem to work for me. I have lost weight--I have finally dipped below the plateau I was on for 3 years in addition to losing the 6 or more pounds I gained last year--plus my blood pressure is consistently on the lower side, where last fall it had risen to levels higher than it had been in 6 years. And as a little additional benefit, I have virtually no cravings!

Next week I am traveling out of town for a week for the first time si... Thu, 5 Sep 2013 16:25:02 EST I took a walk... Yesterday I took my car in for some repairs that I knew were going to be major. The garage is less than 2 miles from my house, so I took the opportunity to walk home, adn felt quite virtuous all day.

They had to keep it overnight, which meant that I couldn't make it to the gym this morning--my usual Tuesday exercise. So I decided to take a walk.

There is a Target not far from me, and I mapped it yesterday--it's only 1.6 miles. Hmmm, I had thought often of walking ther... Tue, 27 Aug 2013 13:57:59 EST Finally walked Last summer I drowned my beloved ipod in the laundry. As a result, I have not been able to get myself to just go for a walk--I get very, very bored without it.

I got a new ipod a little over a month ago, and have been trying to get myself out, with no success. This morning I finally got up and went for a 30 minute walk around the neighborhood. I don't enjoy walking by myself much, and I have lived here so long that the neighborhood is beyond boring, but I did it. Now the challe... Wed, 12 Jun 2013 14:44:57 EST Oh, how I hate to get up in the morning For 90% of my adult life, the minute the alarm went off, I had to jump out of bed and get going. And way too early.

After I became unemployed and with no children to take to school, I can get up when I want. On the days when I go to the gym, I get up around the same time pretty successfully. But there are a few days a week when what time I get up is immaterial. My errands can be done whenever, and those days are becoming a problem!! It is getting harder and harder to drag myse... Sun, 9 Jun 2013 14:02:09 EST So long since last I wrote Every once in a while I think about writing a blog and just never do but I have to write about this:

I think I slept through the night last night!! I don't remember waking up at all, I know that I didn't get up to go to the bathroom.

This is the first time in my life that I believe that I did this. I certainly haven't done it in my adulthood.

I only wish I had a clue as to why it happened, because I would love to replicate it!! Wed, 5 Jun 2013 16:32:45 EST February already! So my coffee drinking is pretty much remaining at my pre-2013 level. I'm ok with it, I like my coffee.

Had a lovely morning at the gym. I went on the treadmill next to a young man who I have seen there many times over the last couple of years. A long time ago, he paid me a compliment on his observation of my workout, and we talked for a few moments. He had had a serious accident which basically required that he learn to walk all over again, and the treadmill was continuing phys... Sat, 9 Feb 2013 18:15:47 EST Coffee Oh, sigh--Linda, sorry, but I needed more coffee this morning, so I had my usual. Back to the "resolution" tomorrow! Sat, 5 Jan 2013 15:45:10 EST 1/3/13 Drinking a little less coffee in the morning, can't say that it really matters, since I generally didn't finish my last cup anyway. Ok, as a resolution, maybe that makes it a cheat, but at least I can point and say--I am successful so far...

Once again, I feel as though I am on the right track to finally start losing again. Hopefully, I haven't just jinxed myself by saying that!!

A friend sent me a rabbit's foot for the NewYear---I rub it often! Thu, 3 Jan 2013 15:04:35 EST New Year! I haven't blogged in a while, but I decided I should weigh in once in a while in the new year.

Resolutions? I don't make them but this year I am starting out trying to cut back a little on my coffee consumption, and I will try again to lose that last 25 pounds that just doesn't want to go away! Tue, 1 Jan 2013 14:46:46 EST To Sleep Perchance to Dream No more Jillian Michaels dreams....

I have had a couple of nights of decent sleep (decent for me). And yet, I cannot get up in the morning!! Part of it is that it is still dark when I want to be getting up which makes my bedroom so nice and cozy--after we fall back this week, it is going to be even harder! Mon, 29 Oct 2012 16:55:50 EST Jillian Michaels dream I meant to post this a couple of days ago after I had the dream. I am one of those people who will dream and wake up remembering that I did but without much detail. Once in a while something sticks.

I had a dream and for some reason, Jillian was in it giving me exercise and weight loss advice (I don't remember anything she said). The crux of the dream was that I picked up some delicious looking chocolate, it looked a little peanut butter cups, and started to eat one, when she ... Mon, 22 Oct 2012 14:33:39 EST Home Again, Home Again I have been home a few hours now and there is so much to do to get re-settled, that I am being a bum!

Leaving my daughter, SIL and the Master of the Universe (my grandson, Vincent) was more than hard. I am already having a Vincent withdrawal. I haven't been away from home for this long in, well, years, and I was very ready to be home again. Can't have it both ways, unfortunately.

We got my computer set for video chats while I was there so hopefully, those will becom... Tue, 2 Oct 2012 18:59:16 EST going home soon I really hate to, but I do have to go home eventually. My son has been going over to my house to take of my (elderly) cats and it is an imposition on his time.

I have plane tickets for 10/2 and it is going to be flood of tears time in Virginia..... Sun, 23 Sep 2012 08:14:53 EST The best little boy My grandson, of course. Still loving him,and there is never enough time for me to hold him. He loves being held, and is now looking straight at me with his big eyes open as though he know who I am. I know, but it makes me feel good.

I am going to miss him so much... Fri, 21 Sep 2012 15:43:21 EST Grandma Duty My grandson came home from the hospital Monday afternoon. That night was pretty good but not so last night. My daughter tends to obsess and get herself worked up over things and that is exactly what happened. My SIL seems to be getting that I might have some good suggestions and be able to help, though. Last night when the baby was fussing, he listened when I suggested letting me hold him, and using the pacifier--and little Vincent slept with me for about 90 minutes.

When they ... Wed, 19 Sep 2012 07:31:54 EST Still struggling this summer I can finally hear although my ear is not completely cleared up. The ENT ruled out any sort of blockage or pressure issue just a viral thing that has to clear up on its own. Sigh.

Expensive to find it out.....

A very expensive summer, in fact, so I am somewhat stressed about money. August is a horrible month for me--home insurance, car insurance, now these doctor bills.

And I am having problems this weekend with eating. Sigh.

Enough! Suck it u... Sun, 5 Aug 2012 17:36:17 EST okay so I am a total mess this summer So the sinus infection cleared up but it left me with a clogged ear! I can't hear out of my right ear which is really beyond annoying. I'm on a second dose of medication hoping that it will clear up, the next step being the ENT and possibly tubes in my ear. Ugh.

And, as a result of the antibiotics for the sinus, I now have a UTI, something that I have had exactly once before in my life. So I am taking stuff for that. I should I am supposed to take something for that but I have... Thu, 12 Jul 2012 15:24:57 EST Sinus Infection clearing up I may have missed a step in here--after ten days of feeling miserable and not getting better, I finally went to the doctor. I had a raging (her words) sinus infection, so the good news is that she put me on antibiotics and I feel much better. Only problem is that my clogged ear still has not popped so I can't hear a thing on my right side. Very annoying.

The other negative is that, after foregoing exercise for such a long time, I am going to have to take it slow to get my stamin... Sun, 1 Jul 2012 16:14:01 EST Being sick is no fun So I took my rest from exercise which I think helped, got back to it, and then I got sick--for the first time in over 6 years. I have no idea where it came from, but I had a low grade fever, congestion, headache, and a sore throat. It started Thursday night and today, Wednesday, I finally feel somewhat normal.

I have not done any exercise since last Thursday and I am a little apprehensive abut going tomorrow. I plan to just use the elliptical at a completely easy pace and when I... Wed, 20 Jun 2012 13:49:35 EST Taking a Rest I have had some aches and pains int he last couple of weeks that are not getting better. I finally decided that I have to take a few days rest--complete rest--from exercise and see if it helps.

This morning it was really hard to not get up and go to the gym which is my usual routine, but I did it. Earlier in the week I had tried doing a less stressful workout but it didn't help any.

I plan to get back into it on Tuesday. Hopefully, myneck will be less stiff and my bac... Sat, 9 Jun 2012 15:22:54 EST I can't believe I wrote a blog about that-- but obviously, I was so annoyed about the circulars. Sometimes those little things just irk you more than major ones.

Fortunately, my ads have been delivered at the right time the last week, so I am in a better mood. Sun, 3 Jun 2012 16:07:09 EST Creature of Habit Living alone is interesting. The longer I do, the more set in my ways I find myself becoming. I like routine, and when you are living alone--and not working--it is very easy to establish routines and stick to them as if they are carved in stone.

I wish I had more incentive to break my routines more often, but that is another issue. Right now, something that I notice more and more is that I am so stuck in my rut, it suits me so well, that when little things change, it is so much ... Wed, 23 May 2012 11:16:39 EST Blah, blah, blah... I blog very infrequently because I lead a very quiet life, not altogether a bad thing.

Every now and then I feel as though I should contribute something, but what?

I am still struggling with not being able to lose despite my best efforts at eating and exercise. Seriously, I am exercising at least three times as much and as hard as I did a year ago, and I gained 5 pounds last year which will not come off.

Well, that's enough complaining, all I can do is keep... Tue, 22 May 2012 16:29:30 EST A Great Compliment Today At the gym this morning, on teh rowing machine--trying something new, and it is not my favorite. I realized that someone was trying to get my attention, so I took out the earbud and the lady said to me--I have been wanting to say something to you for a long time. I have seen you here a lot and you look great. You have really transformed yourself, congratulations!

Wow. I was dumbfounded--I thanked her profusely (never breaking stride on the rowing machine, mind you). Wow. I di... Sat, 28 Apr 2012 18:40:09 EST The English Language I am an English snob. I love the written word, the spoken word, all of it, and I am a stickler for proper usage and syntax. I cringe when language is used incorrectly.

Which brings me to my complaint. Folks, try reading what you write before you post it. I start to read posts and often have to stop because they make no sense. I can understand what the writer is trying to say but the way they express themselves is horrific.

I'm not trying to be mean or "uppity" and m... Wed, 11 Apr 2012 14:55:06 EST 5K second thought I was so proud of having done that 5K on the treadmill yesterday. Last night it suddenly occurred to me that I have been doing 4 miles or so three times a week on the elliptical! In fact, I did it this morning.

It's funny because I was and am sore from the treadmill yesterday but for some reason I don't get the same soreness from the elliptical. And yet, the elliptical supposedly burns more calories. Go Figure. Wed, 4 Apr 2012 16:54:05 EST 5K My gym got new treadmills and ellipticals at Christmas, but because of mysore fott I have been doing the elliptical since the beginning of December as my primary cardio. Lately I have been walking on the treadmill as a cool down.

This morning I decided to do the treadmill, because one bad habit of mine is to get settled on one routine. Anyway, the new treadmills have a program for 5K--so that's what I did!! It took an embarrassing length of time to complete since I was not pushi... Tue, 3 Apr 2012 15:50:21 EST Good quote today The quote for today i was something like (paraphrase because I didn't copy it down and I am lazy!) don't complain about what you haven't done, celebrate what you can do.

I like that--and it is so true. There are so many things that I haven't done that I want to, but wow--I have come so far in terms of what I CAN do now that I couldn't before. So I celebrate the success--and look forward to more of it!!

Sun, 1 Apr 2012 14:59:47 EST Been so long I keep writing blogs in my head and the minute I am on the computer, I forget about it completely.

Same old, same old. My foot still is iffy, although it doesn't hurt, but I feel it when I walk too much or too fast, so I don't know how long it will be before I am ready to attempt running again. I have become an elliptical person--and do an hour on it three to four times a week, using varying intervals, etc. Then I will just walk on the treadmill at a very moderate rate as kind o... Sun, 25 Mar 2012 15:45:23 EST Is it New Year's Already? Wow.

I went to the gym this morning and used the treadmill, really for the first time in a month. My foot hurt a little but then it seemed to loosen up or something and was pretty good. It still seems ok, the same amount of soreness in it as before the workout so I might be ok.

One of the benefits of the gym replacing all their ancient cardio equipment with new is that they haven't set the treadmills to a maximum time limit. I'm hoping that they don't--it was a thrill ... Thu, 29 Dec 2011 15:17:32 EST Almost a new year I am feeling successful today because I actually carried through with the plan I made myself last night. I do that every night--before I go to sleep, I pray for strength and guidance, and make a plan for the next day. Far too often, the plan gets sidetracked as the bed is just so comfortable and the house is so cold......

But this morning, I got up and did the housework which would have been done on Monday. Then a couple of errands. Due to the great water heater disaster of Chr... Wed, 28 Dec 2011 14:40:44 EST Bah, Humbug!! It is Christmas Eve. I got up nice and early, and let the house to go to the gym, When I went to get in my car, I noticed water in the garage....da, da, da! The water heater was leaking.....

I immediately called my regular plumber and got the answering service, left a request for an emergency, and went into the garage to move things out of the water. Back in the house, I discovered that they called back but I didn't hear the phone! Called back, left another request, waited, did... Sat, 24 Dec 2011 14:11:50 EST Latkes, Oy! First off, my foot is still bothering me so I have been doing the elliptical, and I miss the treadmill!!!

Ok, now for the latkes. Last night I made both regular potato and sweet potato latkes for Hannukah for my son and myself. Last year he was out of town the entire month of December so I never made them and it was nice to do it again. But--oh, my gosh--they are way too tasty and I love potatoes anyway! Sigh. so good.

And for lunch today, my mah jongg group is havi... Fri, 23 Dec 2011 13:22:55 EST December is starting out pretty badly So, adding to my weight gain problem, Thursday I did something to my foot on the treadmill, and it hurts! There is no evidence of anything--no swelling, redness, etc.--and it is a little better than it was, but it hurts when I walk on it or flex it, so I am assuming I pulled something in there. Of course, it means that I can't exercise, which is already driving me nuts! Knowing I wasn't going to the gym this morning as usual gave me the motivation to stay in bed a lot later than usual. An... Sat, 3 Dec 2011 14:53:21 EST Help me, Rhonda! So the fast was not a plan that worked. I was decent all day yesterday until evening. I did blow it--I can't even say it out loud. It could have been much, much worse, but in my current state, it was enough.

Mon, 28 Nov 2011 12:45:52 EST I didn't last at the fast! I have not fasted for a long time. I mean an all day fast. I don't consider it a fast if I stop eating at 8 and then start again at 9 the next morning....

Anyway, I decided after THanksgivings 1 and 2.0, I should "detox". I am not a believer in it per se--I just felt different because I had eaten things that I don't normally and I felt off.

So Saturday I planned on a liquid kind of day. I can't live without my morning coffee; then water all day; a mug of warm apple... Sun, 27 Nov 2011 16:16:36 EST Thanksgiving 1.0 My son and I were discussing T-G plans today. The "kids" (he and his friends) plan to coordinate the cooking, but his friend doesn't seem to have discussed the meal with her mother yet, so there is a definite lack of information on that side! I made a checklist and emailed it to my son because I figured it would help them discuss things if they had a list of what needs to be made.

A slight complexity is that his two friends (boyfriend and girlfriend) are vegetarians, so if my son... Sun, 13 Nov 2011 19:30:49 EST Thanksgiving 2.0 My son and I were invited to have Thanksgiving Dinner with the family of one of his best friends in the area. My son knows the family and likes them, so I was glad to accept.

Thanksgiving is my favorite meal to cook, far and away. For years, I would look forward to calling the Butterball Turkey Hotline a week or so before to ask a question, sometimes for some refinement. I finally got to the point that I had to give up the call much as I enjoyed it. I don't have turkey questi... Thu, 10 Nov 2011 15:26:38 EST Senior Moment Oh dear. As usual, I got up this morning and went off to the gym, intending to do a couple of errands afterwards.

When I got to the gym parking lot, I didn't have my housekeys! I never forget things like that....and I had a moment of panic. Checked my trunk and they weren't there, so I started to get back into the car and realized that I would have to go up to the gym to get my ticket validated. As I started upstairs, I thought of where the keys could be, and realized that they... Tue, 8 Nov 2011 16:34:58 EST The New Omron! My new pedometer came today, so tonight's project is to get it set up for tomorrow. Very exciting. I upgraded a little from my original Omron, which was the basic pedometer. This one has the ability to save data to my computer, and keeps 42 days worth of info in its memory. And it is a lovely sleek black..... Tue, 18 Oct 2011 17:32:31 EST Second day of mourning for my pedometer So last night I looked at it again, opened it and left it to dry out overnight. I tried it, even with a new battery, this morning and got no display. I won't give up just yet. I'm giving it the rest of the day to dry out and try again. I have a feeling that the display is just gone.

My little freebie backup pedometer is now in the garbage. I wore it to the gym this morning and when it had registered only 400 steps after 35 minutes on the treadmill, the inaccuracy was too out o... Tue, 11 Oct 2011 14:29:13 EST R.I.P. Omron my friend I love my pedometer. It goes on as soon as I get dressed in the morning and I take it off when I undress at night. I've had it for about 2 1/2 years and love it to death.

Well, to death is the operative phrase here. I got up this morning and dressed to do some chores. I showered, got dressed in clean clothes and threw a load in the laundry....went downstairs and felt my pocket for my pedometer as I always do and realized that I HAD NOT TAKEN IT OUT OF MY JEANS AND IT WAS NOW IN... Mon, 10 Oct 2011 14:54:50 EST It's a streak! Not a good one....

I have been craving chocolate and last night I fell--I made brownies and ate enough that I was sorry about it afterward. This morning I took the rest of them and packaged them into the freezer, so I have come to my senses.

This is obviously another example of my sabotaging myself. After a lifetime of being seriously overweight, the behaviors that got you (me) there can be lurking beneath the well-reasoned, rational surface, waiting for the opportunit... Fri, 16 Sep 2011 12:53:30 EST Oh me oh my Baaad last night. My son came over for dinner and the start of the new season of Survivor--one of our shared guilty pleasures--and he requested a dish that I used to make all the time. Since he moved out, I cook a lot less and this is a casserole that I haven't made in ages, it seems.

I made it--but instead of using ground turkey as I have, I made it with the original ground pork. To be fair to me, I found a package of pork in the freezer that had been in there a long time and... Thu, 15 Sep 2011 16:59:01 EST Dcotor part 2 My Doctor called yesterday afternoon with the results of my blood work. Everything was good, so at least that came out well.

Her advice about "shocking" my system--I looked at the Atkins and Dukan diets and I can't go a day without a vegetable......I did eat more protein than usual yesterday but I doubt it makes a diffeerence.

I think my body is just stubborn. I have done the high-low calorie thing (her advice was actually that just eating higher or lower calories pr... Fri, 2 Sep 2011 19:36:41 EST Complain, complain I had a doctor's appointment yesterday as a checkup so that she can refill my blood pressure prescription.

I have been seeing this doctor for about 5 years now and she is always great at making me feel that I am doing well. She is also always very rushed.

Yesterday was just a downer. I didn't get my atta girl, although she did make one comment about how my changed lifestyle has helped more than medication in improving my heart health. Still, it just seemed as though ... Thu, 1 Sep 2011 15:42:36 EST Senior Moment I just had one. I posted a blog all about my experience driving downtown yesterday, thinking all the while that it sounded familiar to me. It did--because I had already posted one!! Wed, 31 Aug 2011 14:23:41 EST The Best Laid Plans, etc. You all know that expression--the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry (slight updating of language from Burns' so don't yell, I know it).

My plans were not especially best laid but boy, they went awry!

I volunteered to work at an event for AARP taking place in September because I go can for free fi I do! Today there was an volunteer orientation in downtown Los Angeles. After a lot of internal conversations, I decided to try to take the metro line there rather... Tue, 30 Aug 2011 19:45:21 EST Skinny Cow Yesterday (Sunday) I went to an event here in Los Angeles, hosted by Skinny Cow. Skinny Cow offers a product line of lower calorie ice cream, candy. I had heard of them but never sampled their products until yesterday.

I had seen in invitation to attend this event and signed up because the drawing point was that they would measure you to see what your correct bra size is! The name of the event, by the way, was the Skinny Cow Perfect Cup.......oh, and if you did the measuring, yo... Mon, 29 Aug 2011 13:30:44 EST
