It is the Summer-to-Spring Trip Walking Challenge. And since I am doing a virtual hike on my Germany team already, I just love to join this one!!

I live in Frankfurt, which is almost in the middle of Germany, so tons of nice goals to pick. The challenge lasts from March 20 til June 21... 92 days. And I go for 5 km a day, which means 460 km by beginning of summer.

Some of you might know that I lived in Mi... Thu, 21 Mar 2013 11:44:32 EST BarbaraSch lost 70 kg with Sparkpeople... ... if only!!!

I see this lately on my Sparkfeed about once a week. Every time I update my current weight.
I have linked my SP to my FitBit account and when I sync the data to update my daily steps, my weight (128 kg) is getting transfered to FitBit and somehow interpreted as lbs and and transfered back to Sparkpeople and I end up weighing only half of what I do (approx.).

I already contacted SP support AND FitBit support, but nobody could help me. This is gettin... Thu, 14 Mar 2013 06:20:41 EST new habit ... what else? Today was the worst day in the last day re/ my "new" sleeping pattern. The only 6 hours sleep a night took their toll. My alarm clock went off at 7.30 am and somehow I ended up waking up at 9.30 am 40
I didn't even get breakfast in and was at work at 10.20 ... great, just great! I just hope I can stick to my "new" rhythm over the weekend. This is really harder than I thought.. Fri, 8 Mar 2013 10:34:03 EST new habit - what can be improved?? everything!!! lol...

@Beltonwalker66: thanks for the concern about my health, that is really sweet, but I don't really have a sleep issue. I can sleep, if I go to bed later and get out of bed later, too. I have a total different rhythm than my surrounding.

I talked to my Dad on the phone 2 days ago while on my way to work. He told me that he already tried in the office, and I replied that would be way too early for me, he should know that (it was 9.30 am). He just chuc... Wed, 6 Mar 2013 04:54:42 EST new habit - day by day geeze, I am tired!!
It is 3.30 pm over here and I almost fall asleep. Not really a good idea with a telefon conference coming up in 30 minutes, I have to prepare myself for ;)

I went to bed at 11.30 pm last night, but again not falling asleep til abt. 1 am. Reading is not an option. I cannot turn down the book and end up with staying up til 4 am. I put some meditation routine on my iPad to listen to. Maybe that helps.. Tue, 5 Mar 2013 09:33:04 EST new habit-- how did it go? Well, I went to bed yesterday shortly before midnight. Turning off everything 15 minutes before: TV, laptop, music.. did my bedtime routine (bathroom) and off I went.
But I didn't fall asleep til around 1 am I guess, tossing around. I woke up at 7 something, my alarm clock was set to 7.30 am. So I had some minutes to cuddle in my blankets ;)
But still I didn't make it out of the door til 9.10, making it to work by 9.30.
Well.. I have 2 problems: my work schedule AND my wor... Mon, 4 Mar 2013 06:48:13 EST my plan for the new habit Okay, here is the plan:
starting today, I will move my weekend schedule towards my week schedule. Slightly in the beginning, 30 minutes per week. That means, going to bed at the weekends latest at 1 am, during the weeks latest at midnight. I need to get to work earlier in the morning.. although we (as a company) promote flexible hours, my boss is a huge fan of 9 to 5.. not that I make 10 to 8.. but who cares. It looks like, it is more important to be there when he can see me instead of ... Sun, 3 Mar 2013 09:14:07 EST 5% challenge - a new habit One habit I definetly need is a new sleep pattern. I am a night person. My problem is, my boss doesn't really like that ;)
Normally he would expect me at work around 9 am. I already managed to get him to 10 am. But just with a lot of cautious looks if I really stay longer. So my alarm clock rings at 8 am. I go to bed between midnight and 2 am. I just cannot make myself go to bed early.
So I get abt. 6-7 hours of sleep per night. Way too few hours.. and I catch up on the weekends. ... Sat, 2 Mar 2013 15:55:19 EST January 28, 2013 - I am a bit proud I was really lazy last week, bad eating and I didn’t go to the gym at all. So I decided that on Monday I will go no matter what. But what should I tell you? I didn’t WANT to.. I wanted to go home.. cuddling on the couch. The weather was horrible.. raining the whole day. And to top that I received a very interesting email shortly before I left the office for the gym.
I am into genealogy for abt. 20 years now… some times more active than others and right now I have a very active phase ;) ... Wed, 30 Jan 2013 09:30:01 EST 2013 Winter 5% challenge So, here they are .... the reasons why I joined the challenge and why I am doing this journey.

My always No 1: I want to make a long distance flight without getting squeezed.. that is really keeping me from going to Australia!

What do I want to change? I want "activity" to be a part of my normal life. So far "working out" is more a job to me. I do it, and normally I like it once I am on it, but it is nothing, I scream "here" about. I want to do cross country skiing, but... Sun, 27 Jan 2013 14:26:33 EST Change of habit My first blog in weeks and what is it about??? Shopping!! But not the girly shopping of shoes or clothes... no, grocery shopping!!
I realized something yesterday and although it might not have a meaning for most of the people, it really means a lot to me.
My habit of doing grocery shopping totally changed in the last.. well, I would say, 2 months. I totally avoid ALDI, my discount store of choice for the last 39 years. That's where I "learned" how to get a bargain, how to shop for... Tue, 6 Nov 2012 05:43:25 EST Reasons and Rainbows Okay, here it is.. the blog Nix challenged us to write for the Red Hot Heartbreaker Challenge. Why are we doing this? Why am I changing my life, why did I take on this challenge for a healthy lifestyle?

The first one which is always coming to my mind is: I want to make a transatlantic flight without getting squeezed ;))

And here are the other ones...

2. I want to fit into my Karate-Gi again
3. I want to cross my legs without getting sore muscles ;) <B... Mon, 30 Jul 2012 09:57:45 EST Never Quit Pledge I'm joining the "Never Quit Pledge" will you?

Taken from theshelbster's blog

I have added my name to the bottom of the list.

Never Quit Pledge

Sunday, April 29, 2012
Today, I promise I will not quit.
I pledge that no matter, how many ups and downs I pass through, I will continue on my journey.
I pledge to make a NEW START today, and forgive myself for my past, and to stop being so critical of myself.
I pledge to take cont... Sun, 24 Jun 2012 08:10:13 EST I'm totally exhausted... and loving it OMG!!! Today I went to my first Step Aerobic class in more than 10 years!! I am totally exhausted.. had to keep on marching once in a while, my heartrate was never below 150 (well, more up to 180.. lol) and I sweated like heck but it was soooo much fun!! In the second half of the hour, I had some problems with the steps, but really because I was so tired.. I could barely lift my feet ;))
After the class the instructor gave me a huge smile and asked why I am not coming more often. She sa... Wed, 20 Jun 2012 15:44:36 EST TV CAN be an inspiration.. lol Don't ever say that watching TV is only bad for you ;) Watching the "I used to be fat" break on MTV today really inspired me for an intense workout and some healthy batch cooking. Seeing those teenagers working on changing their life and loosing weight was emotional AND inspiring. I could so much relate to what they are going through.. and seeing them made me really proud although I don't even know these people...isn't that odd?
So I put on my gym clothes, turned up the music and did 50... Sun, 17 Jun 2012 12:24:56 EST 5% challenge assignment #3 Our assignment #3 for the 5% challenge is the question: "Why do you want to loose weight"

Plain and simple? Because I want to look good. That's it. No health reasons, no blood pressure, no nothing. I have to say, I don't really care about it. I was healthy like a fish in the water up until 3 years ago when it hit me hard. Since then I have to take tons of medication and I do my very best to listen to the doctors to live a "healthy" life.. whatever that is.

But my reas... Mon, 11 Jun 2012 08:51:00 EST Now I know why!! Now I know why this whole loosing pound game wasn’t working for me in the last months. I mean, I was working out, tracking my food, staying within the ranges and did everything “right” and nothing happened.
Why? Because I cheated!! Well.. to be honest, wasn’t me who cheated but anyway. When I entered my cardio I started using the numbers SP provided me with. I entered my time and my workout and thought “wooow.. those are way too much calories I am supposed to have burnt.. no way!” So I ... Tue, 12 Jul 2011 05:08:50 EST Countdown to Summer - Assignment #3 Here we go. Why do I take part in the Summer 5% Challenge? Well, apart from the fact that a challenge is like a kick-start, I have more "physical" reasons.

1. I love to travel and I love flying, but I hate to ask the flight attendance for an extra belt. And I don't want to be squeezed anymore between the seats. I never want to be in the situation that I finally got a seat in the emergency exit aisle and in the end I have to exchange it with another passenger because I wouldn't fit... Fri, 8 Jul 2011 05:28:28 EST it's been a while.. since I was here the last time.

I was on sick leave the last 6 weeks, stayed with my parents. Almost no internet access. My mom was cute really helping me, cutting my food, helping me getting dressed. But I have to say, I fell way back into the bad old times with my eating. Well, Mom and Dad cooked and I've seen that especially my Mom has some really bad eating habits... never realized that. Tons of fat, sugar and salt..
What shall I say? I gained 5 kg in those 6 weeks. Too ... Wed, 25 May 2011 08:21:38 EST Fast Day 13 til 19 March 21 til 27:
nothing new.. still going strong ;-) It is actually getting more and more easy to skip the meat. But I am looking forward to a ribeye on Easter Sunday.. lol Sun, 27 Mar 2011 11:34:10 EST Fast Day 9 til 12 March 17 til 20:

As you can see, the periods I mention in my blogs keep getting bigger ;-) That just means, that nothing is really worthwile mentioning... it's going great!! I even got through the boxing fight without munching. Well, maybe because Vitali knocked Solis out in the first round... lol Sun, 20 Mar 2011 19:58:38 EST Fast Day 6 til 8 March 14 til 16:
I actually don't have a lot to tell. All is going well so far. No sweets, no alcohol, no meat.
But I have to say, I could have punched my sister yesterday. She had an info event after her hip surgery regarding workout: what can she do, what should she do, etc. And she came home telling me: Barbara, this guy was great, you see, you have to do strength training, and diets are really nonsense.. and you need strength training. I just replied.. well, that's what I am t... Thu, 17 Mar 2011 12:10:03 EST Fast - Day 4 & 5 March 12 & 13:

Saturday was hard to survive the fast. I went home by car (abt. a 5 hour drive up north) and normally I pull out for a break and grab something to eat. I really had a habit of eating fast food when I am driving long distances. I am working on breaking this habit now for half a year.. doing well so far. And I did great on Saturday. No candy bars, no burger, no nothing.. I had some tomatos for snacking ;-)

I will stay with my sister and my niece for the n... Sun, 13 Mar 2011 18:55:24 EST Fast - Day 2 & 3 March 10 & 11: not really much to say. Both days went great. No alcohol, no meat, no sweets. Tons of work, I really had to resist the cake, my colleague brought into office yesterday, but I did it ;-)
Fri, 11 Mar 2011 17:33:51 EST Fast - Day 1 Yesterday was the first day of my fast til Easter: no alcohol, no sweets (and salty snacking like chips etc.) and no meat!

How did it go? Well, I slipped twice.. the first time, without even realizing it. It was at the coffee vending machine, before I could glimpse, I held the sugar sprinkler in my hand, putting a serving of sugar into my coffee. I was actually thinking of throwing the coffee away, I didn't want to fail at the first day. But I am not really into throwing food away... Thu, 10 Mar 2011 10:05:42 EST Seven weeks without ... this is how we call the fast between ash wednesday and easter. And tomorrow it starts again. I didn't grow up in an active christian household but I am baptized and confirmed and being born and raised in Germany, of course I know about the traditions. But since my parents weren't really actively religious I never came in touch with the fast. Until a couple of years ago.. maybe 7 or 8, I cannot really remember. There was this day that I decided to take those "7 weeks without" in the very s... Tue, 8 Mar 2011 13:41:29 EST Reset I reset my goals. Actually almost everything, the only things I kept were my teams and my food groupings.
I realised lately that I was a lot more effective, successful and full of energy when I actively used Sparkpeople following their lead. When I started to do my own stuff (workout, food plans) I lost control piece by piece. Here a bit .. and there a drop.. here just one pound and there one cm, it all came back and I am as lazy and dull and sluggish as before.
So 2 days ago, I re... Wed, 8 Dec 2010 06:09:40 EST Gain and gain and gain That's what I am doing for the last week. 2 pounds per DAY!!! My doctor warned me, that this could happen, if the medication I take against the Grave's disease would start to take effect, but nevertheless, it is frustrating! I didn't change anything: still working out, still controlling my food-intake (and beverages) And I gained 10 lbs. last week!! And to top this, I FEEL FAT!! Thu, 11 Nov 2010 11:26:23 EST 48 48?? I checked the pants again.. yes.. oh my god, I'm wearing a size 48!!! Coming from a 54 that means I dropped 3 sizes. (THREE to avoid misunderstandings.. lol)

I have been home for the weekend visiting my Mom and Dad. My mom is working in a tiny little boutique directly at the waterfront and I asked her if she has some black pants in store. As I got there it was so warm and I was sweating like heck so I didn't want to try. She said no problem, I'll bring it home tonight. Across... Mon, 5 Jul 2010 05:42:21 EST What a mistake! geeeze... bad mistake.. bad bad bad mistake!! I had some fruit, muesli and a yogurt for breakfast and had my batchcooking for lunch. I am working on my portion size with my coach right now and had a "normal" portion with me, which for me was of course way to small. And I made the mistake of not taking something extra.. some fruit, carrot sticks or something else healthy. So you guessed it, one hour after lunch I got hungry.. and not just hungry like in "i could eat something" but HUUUNNNGGRRY... Mon, 28 Jun 2010 09:32:15 EST Next round in my nutrition class I had my third nutrition class this wednesday. The homework from 2 weeks ago was 5 servings of fruits and veggies per day. "Piece of cake" was my thought. I didn't track lately on SP and I was soooo sure, that I would make it to 5 servings and more. I mean, I love fruits and veggies, how can I fail?

Well, what should I say: I failed. Big time.. When I really looked at it, I realized, that when I don't cook my own food, I even have days I don't eat ONE serving per day. Shocking!! <... Fri, 28 May 2010 07:49:58 EST Experiences with a pro ... fessional nutrition coach ;-)
Last weeks session was all about if and how food is interacting with the medication we are taking. She did some researching and now I feel a lot better with my green vegetables and the blood thinner I am taking. There was a lot of "I guess.." or "I think... " so far. Even with some doctors, I have to say.
We discussed getting in motion. How can we do that throughout the day? I mean, I have a sitting office job and work on 11th floor. 18th floor st... Mon, 3 May 2010 10:38:29 EST My first week in the new healthstudio Hey, I invented a new word: "Healthstudio".. and I like it. This describes best the new gym I am going to, because there I also attend my nutrition class. I had my first week there, the fitness test, the consultation of the supporting doctor who gave me the GO. It may have been an advantage that he also was my doctor when I was in the clinic.. he was actually the one recommending the gym. And he said, yes cardio is the most important for me but not to forget strength training. I need muscles.... Tue, 27 Apr 2010 16:13:57 EST Nutrition class When I was in the hospital in January guess what the docs there recommended??? To loose weight!! Ah yes.. I didn't know.. totally new for me!! ;-)
Well, they also recommended a gym which had been founded by some of the docs there and is specialised on workout for patients with heart or lung problems, who are overweight, have some other physical problems. I joined the gym 2 weeks ago and I was really impressed by the way the whole thing starts. You have your talk with one of the supporti... Wed, 21 Apr 2010 16:14:37 EST 35 and counting Hey guys, this weekend was a great weigh-in for me. I am officially DONE with 35 lbs since I started with Sparkpeople!!
That was one reason for me to sort out my closet that last weekend. Another one was my favourite pair of Jeans.. geeze I loved it, it really gave me a great sexy butt ;-) And I refused to sort them out for the last year, I wore them with a belt, pulling them tight (my butt didn’t look great anymore, not even talking about sexy) and last Friday I put them on again just ... Mon, 12 Apr 2010 09:33:57 EST last 2 months Hi there,
the last 2 month were really tough for me. In and out of the hospital, I am sick again at home. But it helped me a lot to prioritise my life. Health first, then family and friend and the job is way back ;-)
And slowly everything turns out okay.. my trip to Vancouver to the Olympics 2010 is settled, and I am looking soooo much forward to it. I am really getting excited.

And then today I measured myself and since the last time I lost a lot of centimetres ;-) ... Tue, 26 Jan 2010 16:14:47 EST again???? again!!! I had a rough time lately. Starting September/October I didn’t really feel well and in early November my sister’s neighbour had to call the ambulance. I was lying on the couch hyperventilating. I felt like I couldn’t get enough oxygen into my lungs. They took me into the ER and diagnosed a thrombus in my right leg… but it had travelled and plugged my lung artery. Later on, after returning home from the hospital I realised how close it was to not coming back home again. And I was so surprised ... Tue, 5 Jan 2010 11:10:25 EST I did it!!! Well, I wouldn't go as far as saying "today is the first day of the rest of my life" but I have to admit, I AM a bit proud of me... *g*

A couple of days ago, I signed up again for our company gym. Nothing fancy, but they have a special cardio cross section. Really good equipment including your personal set-up with a trainer, if you want to. And no, it is not for free.. lol.. my employer is great on benefits but not THAT great ;-)

So I packed my gym bag yesterday.. very... Wed, 1 Jul 2009 07:40:03 EST Back to Zero Back to zero. I have gained almost everything I have lost since I joined Sparkpeople. 10 lbs are left from my 20 which is a bit frustrating to be honest.

I was/am a bit overwhelmed with the changes in my life.. with this status of being in between. Eating fast food since I don't want to go grocery shopping for those temporary housing time. All those excuses I had my whole life.. my move from Italy to Germany was a desaster, my home looks like after an invasion. Time after work is ... Tue, 5 May 2009 10:26:22 EST Between Heaven and Hell I don`t know what is going on right now inside my body.. something must be very turbulent in there. My mood is ranging between Heaven and Hell!!
I am so happy to move and to have a new start and all this but of course there has to be something dragging me down: my weight!

I was so glad to finally move into the right direction at the end of last week with loosing 1.1 lbs. And this morning I stepped on the scale again and I gained!! And not only a pound or two, but almost 5 (i... Mon, 30 Mar 2009 06:47:41 EST for a quiet moment Some people come into your life for a lifetime and some come for a season.
You have to know which is which. I put everybody that comes into my life in the category of a tree. Some people are leaves on a tree. The wind blows, they go to the left. The wind blows from the other way, they go to the right. They are just unstable. You can't count on them for nothing.

All they ever do is take from that tree. What you need to understand about a leaf is that it has a season. It'll wi... Wed, 25 Mar 2009 10:15:24 EST Just one of these days... Do you know those days when you get more and more fed up with every minute passing? Yes? Well, today is one of these days for me.

Nothing is working out, people calling me to send them documents I have delivered three times now... "yes, but Barbara, I cannot find them in my mailbox chaos, I know you have them at hand, would you be so nice..?" - Do I have a sign on my forehead saying "seggretaria?"

Daily monthend TelCons are held, although 90% of the participants object... Tue, 24 Mar 2009 10:24:03 EST Oh my God, I have a collarbone When I am concentrating on something or think something through, I tend to put my hand at the lower end of my throat covering the upper part of my decollete and kind of massaging the throat with thumb and indexfinger.

Yesterday my fingers sensed something hard underneath all that fat and skin. I was thinking "What the heck..." and then I realized, THAT is my collarbone!!

The 2 of us didn`t really have a close relationship during the last 20 years. He didn`t really show... Wed, 11 Mar 2009 08:36:55 EST What is BBC thinking? Harry Potter??? BBC reckons most people have only read 6 of the following 100 books. Put an X after the books you have read.

[] 1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
[] 2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien
[] 3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
[] 4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling
[] 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
[x] 6 The Bible
[] 7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
[] 8 Nineteen Eighty Four - George Orwell
[] 9 His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman
[] ... Sun, 1 Mar 2009 17:58:16 EST Friendship - sorry, got very long I am taking off a day from my Rome blog, because I have something else which is circling in my mind and I cannot ged rid off it.

I have this friend here in Milan. I met her maybe a year ago. Normally I am not so fast with calling people “friends” but with her it was somehow an instant bonding, like we knew each other for years. She is American from Italian origin (her parents emigrated to the States) living here in Italy for maybe a year before we met. Everything was fine, we had ... Fri, 27 Feb 2009 07:32:20 EST Rome Day 3 part 1 Rome Day 3

On our third day in Rome we were just exploring the city walking, taking the buses and the metro. Our tourbus ticket wasn`t valid anymore, so we took the metro to “Piazza della Spagna” that is where the Spanish steps are. I should have known that this was an omen for the day. It was steps up and steps down the whole day (oddly more steps up.. lol). Those steps are really like you see them on pictures or on TV. Ending in a cute little piazza with (of course) a fountain. T... Thu, 26 Feb 2009 06:50:15 EST Rome Day 2 - Part 2 After exiting the Sistine Chapel we filled our waterbottles at one of the public fountains and prepared for St. Pietro. That is the good thing in Rome, there are fountains with drinking water all over the city. If it is not mentioned otherwise, you can drink it without any concerns. Still a heritage of the aqueducts of the Roman Empire. Can you imagine?

We entered St. Pietro via the catacombs. After seeing the long queue we were again happy that we took the tour. And again in the ... Tue, 24 Feb 2009 09:37:45 EST Rome Day 2 Rome Day 2

So, after a good night sleep and a not so hot shower in the morning (my sister swore that she too had not really hot water while showering for 20 minutes before me) we made our first experience with the so called “breakfast” in this hotel. Therefore you have to know, that a normal breakfast in Italy is a caffe (espresso) and a cigarette ;-)) Just softies add a brioche, which is kind of a croissant.

So this breakfast was a buffet consisting of some varieties ... Mon, 23 Feb 2009 05:35:37 EST Rome Day 1 So, here it is.. the start of my trip report for Rome. I will add day by day.. sometimes take out incidents..just as I have time to write. I will post those also in my blog and there I will add some pictures:

Rome! At last!!

Since the day I moved to Italy, Rome was a city way top on my list of cities I want to visit. I have done a couple others first, but Rome never slipped my mind. And last weekend the day was finally there. My sister came down from Munich by car on T... Fri, 20 Feb 2009 17:15:39 EST Am I the only one? Okay people.. honest now, but am I the only one who is totally overwhelmed by the BSS challenge?
Coming back after 4 days I am totally lost. You shouldn`t think, that I work in numbers because this whole way of calculating the points is just too complicated (or it just sounds like that and I am too lazy to think more deeply about it ;-)).

But one point that is really bothering me, is this sending goodies for the sake of getting points. That is just not my mentality. I send ... Tue, 17 Feb 2009 06:17:36 EST
