AUNTB63's SparkPeople Blog AUNTB63's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community One day at a time I've been "muddling" through my days. I know I said I would be back Sparking, but I haven't been doing that. I know I am in a funk....normal/natural under the circumstances, but I don't like where I am at. I was so used to being "in control" and now my emotions have taken over (not all of the time). Been reading articles/books on grieving, looking for some guidance. This is helping. Tried to get back into my scheduled lifestyle....found that my/our schedule is not the way to go....Got to find... Sat, 15 Mar 2014 12:46:56 EST My need to come back As some of you know, on Jan. 7 my beloved DH was diagnosed with stage 4 lung/liver cancer. Our God had/has a plan and He received Chet back into His heavenly fold on Jan. 18. I feel Chet's presence everyday. He will always be my Special Angel.

This has been a difficult journey, but I know if I continue to take one day at a time with the grace of God, I will have the strength and courage to continue.

On my Spark page I have a part of the Serenity prayer. I would like to s... Sun, 9 Feb 2014 09:15:15 EST Laurie/Fund raiser updates Laurie had her third chemo treatment this past week and like too many before her, she shaved her head wearing this as a badge of courage and hope. She has good days and better days, but through it all she is staying strong in her convictions and believes; courageous and so inspiring.

The fund raiser brought out hundreds of supporters. There were two venues going on that day. $6100 was raised at one and still don't know the total from the second one.
Needless to say it was an e... Mon, 9 Dec 2013 11:08:39 EST An update on Laurie I posted this on a AAU team thread and realized my many friends on other teams would like an update

For those who don't know the story, here is a short recap. During a routine gall bladder surgery, Laurie was diagnosed with a rare ovarian type cancer. Since than she has had surgery to remove abdominal cancer cells along with a small section of her small intestine.
She needed to wait approximately 28 days (to let her small intestine heal a bit) before starting chemo. T... Sun, 17 Nov 2013 09:44:19 EST Getting back to old "new" habits Now that it's getting colder outside I'm remembering how difficult it was for me that first winter on SP. Trying to get in 8+ glasses of water (it's easy when it's hot outside), having to change my breakfasts (cold cereal with fruit) and my lunches (sandwich, salad, fruit). I made these changes: drank 16 oz of water with each meal and snack; made oatmeal or English muffin & egg plus fruit for breakfast; and lunches were comforting soups (with lots of veggies) plus fruit.

It's time ... Tue, 29 Oct 2013 10:43:29 EST A little bit of this and that. The past few weeks have been an emotional roller coaster, but I am a survivor so I am doing just fine. Had quite a few days of not tracking anything....of not keeping in touch with YOU my spark friends. I know you all understand, but I want you all to know without your on going support with comments and goodies my days would have been much more bleak. I did check in everyday, but at the end of the day I was just emotionally drained. I am getting back to some "me" time and getting ready for wh... Mon, 21 Oct 2013 19:21:48 EST It's been a long day, but outcome good. Just got home from the hospital. Laurie's surgery which was rescheduled from Sunday to today went better than expected. Because of an emergency her 2 o'clock surgery didn't get started until 5:30. Once it got started it went very well. The doctor said with confidence that they got 99% of the disease. He never uses 100% because you just don't know....but he is looking at a good recovery. They took out everything they said they would including a small section of her small intestine, which they ... Tue, 15 Oct 2013 23:56:24 EST We need prayers and positive vibes. As some of you know my niece was diagnosed with cancer (found when having her gall bladder removed). Originally we were told it was a non aggressive slow growing type of cancer, but there are numerous tumors. Because this is a "rare" type of cancer the doctors here sent her test results to John Hopkins for a consult. They apparently have dealt with this type of cancer. Yesterday we found out that although this type of cancer is "rare" it has been classified as an aggressive ovarian related ca... Fri, 4 Oct 2013 21:16:18 EST Gave myself "permission"..... On this journey I have used "everything is moderation" as a way of thinking - it works for me. Yesterday I gave myself permission to think out of that box.
I planned (tracked) for a high calorie day - right at the top of my maintenance range.
Had a taste for a pumpkin square so I took a ride to what used to be my favorite bakery. They didn't have the pumpkin squares so I settled for a cinnamon roll with frosting and nuts on top. As my mid morning snack I cut the said roll in half a... Mon, 30 Sep 2013 11:20:51 EST NSV? - "taste buds" again :) I'm trying to keep my mind busy today so here goes another "taste buds" changing since SP.

I really like popcorn as a snack. I used to eat a big bowl of buttered popcorn without any thought what so ever. Than I made popcorn eating a "mindful" eating experience. I made a smaller bowl of those kernels and ate one at a time. I also liked "trio" popcorn (plain, cheese and carmel mixed together). I found a place that bagged this heavenly concoction in single servings, so before our vaca... Tue, 17 Sep 2013 10:05:54 EST A year later and an "atta girl" About a year ago I started a downward spiral that took hold for a 10# gain. It started when we took our yearly vacation - too much eating, not enough exercise and an attitude of "I'm on vacation. I'll get back on track when I return home"....Right !? It took a few months to turn this spiral around. Like so many of us I felt shame and anger after having done so well for so long on this journey. With many self talks and a few swift kicks I did get back on track. Lost the 10 unwanted pounds and... Sun, 8 Sep 2013 09:17:09 EST At GOAL 7/28/2013 As I've stated in a previous blog, I am ready for the maintenance phase of my journey. Today I am doing just that. Reached my goal 60 pounds and am changing my tracker.

I've taken the past few weeks working on this transition, especially the mind set it will take to maintain. I'm sure there will be some stumbles along the way, but I will not let them take me away from my long term goal of maintaining this weight loss. Of course I will take this this part of my journey with "baby st... Sun, 28 Jul 2013 09:15:02 EST Big Boy Seasoning When I was growing up there were a chain of "Big Boy" restaurants around town. I believe there are still some around down South. Anyways, it was always a treat to go this restaurant because they had the best "Big Boy" burgers (sort of like Big Mac's from McDonalds) but they had this "Big Boy" seasoning you could put on it and Yum it was oh so good. They also had the best fresh strawberry pie you could sink your teeth into, but that could be another story. Back to the burgers. After a number o... Thu, 25 Jul 2013 19:59:42 EST My taste "buds" certainly have changed Year ago I came across "Miss Meringue" cookies. At the time you could only get them on line. Now I find them in some stores. These were like an answer to a prayer. I bought the minis and you could have 12 of these sweet treats for 120 calories with no fat. I was in one of my yo-yo diet phases so whenever I "needed" a sweet to eat I would have some of these (sometimes all 12).
I still keep them in my cupboard mostly because I really like them.
So today I was preparing lunch and decid... Mon, 15 Jul 2013 16:51:36 EST Yesterday's dilemma... So yesterday started like a normal day. Menu done, ST done, a few chores done. While taking a shower I noticed a light flicker and thought the bulb was going.....than I noticed all three lights were flickering...oh oh ...could be a power outage. Jumped out to turn off the lights and quickly finished my shower. While drying off I heard the TV so I figured the power was back on. Boy was I wrong. We, along with most of our neighbors had a partial power outage....some lights on some not. I checke... Mon, 8 Jul 2013 09:48:00 EST Good thing I learned how to be flexible:) Had my 4th of July menu planned out. Breakfast (check) that's where it ends. After breakfast and doing a couple of things DH announces he is taking me out for Mexican food for a late lunch (which means supper would be leftovers from lunch). I had planned on a chicken avocado sandwich with a side of cucumbers and an orange for lunch and for dinner it was going to be grilled salmon and asparagus.
I can say that the Mexican food was exceptionally good and I stayed within my calorie range, b... Thu, 4 Jul 2013 19:17:45 EST Am I ready? I think so. OK so yesterday I made the bold statement of "transitioning to maintenance...soon".
Exciting? Yes...Scary? Yes... Like so many, I have a history of yo-yo dieting, but this time somethings are very different.
1 - I have been in a "dress rehearsal" for 3 years
2 - I've learned how to listen to my body, especially when in diverse situations.
3 - I've learned how to make healthier food choices at least 90% of the time
4 - I've learned how to portion control (yes I still w... Tue, 2 Jul 2013 17:11:51 EST I did survive the weekend :) Well if you read my last blog you know my son surprised me and came home from Portland OR for the weekend. Every year we have a family/friend party usually in June. We were concerned about the weather (getting into the high 80's), we had a nice breeze most of the day so all went well. Had tons of food (some healthy, some not so healthy) I snacked my way through the day and drank twice as much water than normal for me. Never once did I feel hungry or unenergized. Between the watermelon and veg... Tue, 25 Jun 2013 08:23:53 EST I was blown away :) So I haven't been around much the past couple of days getting ready for a get together that we are having tomorrow. I just knew that I wouldn't get off the computer if I did more than the minimum on Spark. I love my Spark Friends and don't mean to "ignore" them, but my list of things to do just kept growing instead of shrinking. Not as organized as I should have been.
Well, yesterday DH offered to take me out for breakfast, so off we went. Shortly after that DH had some things to do so h... Sat, 22 Jun 2013 08:21:53 EST Spark Coach 6/16/2013 So today's SC challenge for me put a smile on my face. The challenge was to eat at the high end of my calorie range. I felt like I got a free hall pass. LOL I usually eat at the low to mid range with an occasional high range. Well today I was "told" to eat at that higher range. This fit in perfect for the day. We were going out to Applebee's for a late lunch (DH choice) and I pre decided to have a Bourbon Street steak (something I remember eating a lot). So I did order the steak with a salad... Sun, 16 Jun 2013 21:36:15 EST Flag Day ... a bit of history.
Poster commemorating the 140th Flag Day on June 14, 1917.

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.[1] The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus ... Fri, 14 Jun 2013 10:31:10 EST Extra Strawberries? Try this... Got my Prevention magazine and saw this recipe and decided to give it a try. 4 Yumm.....and simple to make.

Strawberry Custard Cake

1. Heat oven to 375 F. Coat shallow (1 1/2") baking dish (2 qt.) with baking spray. Hull and slice 1/2 lb. strawberries. Arrange in dish.

2. Beat 4 lg. eggs and 1/3 cup sugar on low until smooth, 2 minutes. Stir in 1 cup of 2% milk, 3 TBSP each whole wheat and all-purpose flours, 1 tsp. each vanilla extract and lemon z... Sun, 9 Jun 2013 08:26:02 EST Another year has gone by This week marked three years since I found SP and started my journey to a healthier lifestyle. I had lost 50 lbs., put 10 back on and now have a total weight loss of 52.5 lbs. My goal now is to toss a total of 58-60 lbs. to the curb....that's my way of saying losing the weight and not finding it again.
This journey still amazes me. Learning how to eat and exercise so I don't feel like I'm on a diet or burning myself out with exercises that I just don't like to do. I'm happy with my progr... Wed, 29 May 2013 19:48:57 EST Another week on my journey. So today's weigh in showed no loss, no gain. Before SP I would have been terribly disappointed after having a good week of healthy eating and fitness. But today I just accepted reality. I am more than that number on the scale.
I am 11 pounds from my ultimate (new) goal with the dreaded last 10 pounds right around the corner.
Today I switched my Spark Coach program to "plateau busting". So for the next 4 weeks I will listen to new tips and ideas. I really like the Spark Coach... I... Sun, 14 Apr 2013 10:09:13 EST I want I want I want
Saw this on another blog (MILLISMA) who found on another blog and just needed to pass it on for others to read. Have a good day! Hugs! Wed, 10 Apr 2013 15:07:19 EST 7 weeks back on track
I lost my way, like so many, and I came back also like so many. I'm almost back to the old "new" me. My energy level is up. My motivation is high (most of the time). My food choices are back to 95% healthy. My fitness needs some tweaking, but I am working on that. For the past 3 weeks I had to curtail my exercise due to an awful cough, however, that is getting better every day.
I have integrated a new Spark recipe every week to broaden my menus. I have been working on the April cha... Sun, 7 Apr 2013 10:25:14 EST Worth looking at Thu, 28 Feb 2013 17:51:25 EST Note to self... Today's Spark Coach for me was about moderation. I know this is the way to go. Whether it is in food intake or exercise and with my attitude. I believe this was part of my down fall. I took that all or nothing attitude instead of everything in moderation. I will work at keeping this "moderation" attitude in the front lobe of my brain and continue moving forward on my journey. Let's all keep this in mind and we will be successful. A happy, healthy Monday to all....HUGS!! Mon, 25 Feb 2013 10:38:19 EST First week back. This journey never ceases to amaze me. Only one week back and so many of the ideas/tricks and words of wisdom from Sparkers just started flowing back into my brain. Or maybe I should say "out of the files tucked in the back of the brain, these learned habits came forward again".
It wasn't an easy week, but it wasn't all that difficult either. Planning and tracking my food made portion control easy. Getting back to regular exercise made sitting for extended periods of time impossible. (en... Sun, 24 Feb 2013 12:32:43 EST Coming "home".... Been spiraling downward long enough. Now is not the time to speak of the past, but rather the present/future.
Will work on getting back on track, starting with portion control, consistent exercise program and drinking that oh so important water.
Thanks to all who kept sending supportive comments. I'm getting my spark back...ONE day at a time.
Sometimes life "sucks", but it's how we handle these times, no matter how long it takes, that will make the difference.....I DO BELIEVE !... Sun, 17 Feb 2013 10:25:50 EST I need to "own" my plan After a couple of years of working with my plan trying to balance healthy eating and exercise, tweaking it when things weren't going well. I did reach my goal. Now I am again back to trying to balance healthy eating and exercise on a different level. Sometimes it gets frustrating with numbers going up and down, but I know these are like growing pains. Each "pain" needs to be addressed and tweaked as I go along.

These past couple of weeks I have come to the conclusion that what I ne... Mon, 8 Oct 2012 09:29:28 EST New things from today.... So DH had a touch of the flu (so I think) today. He wanted a couple of "comfort foods" which would be off limits for I did some running around and three stores later I found all of them and was on my merry way home. While shopping I did come across a three good finds for me. I don't grocery shop at Target, but today I found Yoplait light Pumpkin pie yogurt.....was pretty good. Think I will add some pumpkin pie spice to the next one. The second item was Archer Farms reduced fat Smok... Tue, 2 Oct 2012 20:13:51 EST So much has been going on .... I never expected to be gone for a month, yet I was. Our days are getting better.
Even though I didn't comment on Spark I did check in every once in awhile and you will never know just how much your love and support helped us get through this time of mourning. DH is doing well (so am I). This is a time when one would think the family would rally and put aside any differences, not so in this case, but we WILL move forward from here.

On a lighter friend Mary has finally... Sun, 16 Sep 2012 17:49:17 EST May be away from SP for a few days My Mother-in Law passed away unexpectedly Thursday night. Will be spending time with family for the next few days. Please say an extra prayer today for her soul and for the family. Still processing this. Thank you, Barb Sat, 18 Aug 2012 08:34:52 EST Three weeks into maintenance So it's been three weeks that I have been working the maintenance phase of my journey. Feeling a little bit more relaxed with the whole idea. Have to admit I was a little scared (not what I expected to feel like). I am taking those baby steps, like in the beginning of this journey. One day at a time for me. Today when I weighed in I actually lost 1/2 pound....think that was do to all the walking at the fair on Thursday. Been trying to add 100-200 calories a day....which after two years of eat... Sun, 5 Aug 2012 11:20:15 EST So yesterday was the big DAY....Harley and state fair. As most of you know on my bucket list was riding on a Harley. My "baby" brother and I had plans to go to our state fair and he suggested taking his Harley as parking would be so much easier/cheaper and I said yes. Never have been a "rider" on a Harley I was a little apprehensive. But thanks to my friends, SP and others, I was given great advice and was very calm about the whole idea. He arrived at 7:45 AM and we were on our way... Fri, 3 Aug 2012 18:53:49 EST Bucket list....Harley ride.... a little help...Please?
So far I have a short "bucket list"...still working on it. However, riding on a the back of a Harley is on that list.
My "baby" brother (50+) and I have plans to go to our state fair this year....neither of our mates get into going to the fair.
DBB has a Harley, and has for many years.....he suggested using this as our transportation for the day. Of course I said OK.
Now anyone out there who might have some tips for me....would greatly appreciate them. Like easiest way ge... Fri, 27 Jul 2012 11:31:23 EST For any one on maintenance. I am starting my maintenance phase today. Looking for any advice. How was your transition to maintenance? What was the easiest thing for you to do? What was the most difficult?
I have read most of the articles on maintaining weight from SP (good info) ......looking for some real life experiences...
Thanks for stopping by and helping a fellow "Sparker".....Hugs to all who read this. Sun, 15 Jul 2012 09:35:08 EST WooHoo....I reached goal today! Although I am doing THE happy dance and my SMILE will be big all day, I will admit this is only a milestone in this journey. some say, "now the hard part begins"....I say I'm up for the challenge.....I have been able to change a number of old habits into healthy lifestyle choices. My plan is to continue on the course. Remembering the ups and downs that got me here, along with those learning experiences. Using them as stepping stones to what lies ahead...Today is my normal "rest" day from m... Sun, 15 Jul 2012 09:30:11 EST Just a few thoughts...... I haven't written a blog in awhile so I thought I'd put down just a few thoughts.
: the heat wave we've been having has ceased for a couple of days....our winter was a mild one and June's temps were more like August's usually are...can't wait to see what's in store for the rest of the summer. Who said "there is no global warming" ?

: trying to stay creative in the kitchen, here's a couple of examples.
- for a treat/dessert yesterday I took 1/2 cup strawberries ... Tue, 10 Jul 2012 16:05:23 EST Harmonica at Carnegie Hall Some one sent this to us and it is too good not to pass along...Enjoy!

If you can't get it directly from here it is worth it to copy and paste it.

335 Tue, 26 Jun 2012 18:10:08 EST What size plate do you use? About a year and a half ago I got a "tip" from SP about using a smaller plate. You know what they used to call a salad or sandwich plate...that's what came to my mind. So I thought if I'm going to portion control my food maybe a smaller plate would help with that. So I started to use that size plate for all my meals at home. I believe my mind always visualized a plate full of food. So using a smaller plate and portion control my mind still"saw" a plate full of food. As time past I rummaged fo... Wed, 20 Jun 2012 16:34:52 EST He's home (sigh!) and I'm back to sparking As some of you are aware our son came in from Portland late last Wednesday.
So good to see him (been a couple of years). He put on a little weight, but looks healthy. He loves to cook and take anything in the kitchen and make it into a feast. He also is into healthy eating with lots of veggies and fruits. We were able to spend 2 1/2 days together catching up and just "hanging" out. I knew he wanted to spend time with some friends also while he was in town. We did manage to get the family... Tue, 12 Jun 2012 08:57:55 EST Two Year SparkVersay..... Two years ago today I joined the SP site. Today I call this my extended family.
YOU have been here for me through thick and thin (no pun intended). The most important thing I have learned: it is the journey not the destination that is truly important.
Replacing old habits with new ones is not easy. After all the old habits had many years to develop and the new ones only a couple, but putting these new habits in place has been enlightening. Although I could eye ball the food I put ... Sun, 27 May 2012 10:10:55 EST No weigh in today/ they "got me"... I have used Sundays for my weigh in day since starting SP two years ago, because weekends were always difficult for me. I decided this would "teach" me to embrace this journey 7 days a week and it has worked for me.
Today I will not weigh in.....yesterday DH and I were to another couple for a late lunch at a Mexican restaurant (had my meal planned out and knew if I stayed away from the guacamole I would be on track). Well, we met up with the couple and I thought we were going to our tabl... Sun, 20 May 2012 09:52:18 EST Update on my friend Mary... Prayers once again prevail. What was a very difficult night is turning into an optimistic outlook today. Mary's surgery went well. The surgeon put 7 coils into the aneurysm (this is to keep it from rupturing again. He also said (hence the good outlook) when Mary is stronger and her vitals a better he will go back in and put clamps in. With the research that I did the coils are less invasive and the clamps are more permanent. She has moved both her hands and opens her eyes every once in a whi... Fri, 11 May 2012 17:19:14 EST Work in progress" turns into: Since this is the second week in a row where that pesky scale is sending "raspberries" my way, I decided to take this opportunity to "train" for least in my mind. That way I won't look at the "no loss", but rather just continue on my merry way. I joined the "Spring Challenge" (working on week 2) mainly to change up my exercise routine. I'm also going to add some dancing to my daily routine: this is to practice that Happy dance when I do reach my goal.....Onward and Forward... Sun, 6 May 2012 10:48:14 EST It was a good week, even though.... I didn't lose weight this week. I am OK with that because on this journey I have learned that if I do my best.....THAT is what counts. Not a number on my pesky scale. I have been fortunate with mostly weekly weight losses. Now that I am heading to the last stretch of meeting my main goal I know I will step things up a notch and be grateful for all that I continue to learn here on SP. I know I will get to goal....does it matter when (?) to me ...not really. Should I have a date for this goal (... Sun, 29 Apr 2012 12:20:36 EST Met my second middle of the road goal. So yesterday I spun double 7's and asked if this could be a "lucky" sign. Some of you suggested I buy a lottery ticket.....well I did. Spent $8 and got back $30...this is pretty good for me as I usually don't come out even.
Now for the best news. Last week at weigh in went up 2#'s. Sigh! This week down 4#'s. Woo Hoo! Since January 1 I have been losing 1# a for me and my plan. With the gain and then loss I still am losing 1# a week so I am doing a happy dance and shouting ou... Sun, 22 Apr 2012 08:23:26 EST Update on email notification problems I was ready to blog (vent) on my frustrations this morning as I was choosing to let this get to me. But than my Guardian Angel told me to look further into this problem. So that's what I did. I went back to the "technical" message board and came across another "email" problem. There the answer included info about SBCGlobal/Att blocking some SP emails. A light went off in my head....I have Att internet so I went to their support site. After some time (I am not the most literate computer person... Sun, 15 Apr 2012 11:50:27 EST
