ARW715's SparkPeople Blog ARW715's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Day 8 : A little bummed First of all, I did something great this week. I tracked all my food. It is my goal for the rest of October and I succeeded. :)

I also made time to exercise. I did Bikram yoga twice, went to the Y, did 30 day shred, and took a walk in our neighborhood.

I was very excited to weigh in this morning. The problem: I didn't lose any weight.

There is nothing to say about this, I guess. I am bummed. But I did what I set out to do, I made better choices, I... Sat, 18 Oct 2014 08:12:13 EST Here I am again Tap, tap, is this thing still on?

Where to begin? I started SP in August 2012 and lost about 57 lbs in 11 months while tracking food intake and exercising (primarily walking and jogging and bikram yoga). I went from 254 to 197. My 40th birthday was in July 2013. After my birthday (a fabulous trip to New York with my husband) I was never able to get back on track. I gain much of the weight back, slowly, over the last year. I tried several different things (Jenny craig, intuiti... Sat, 11 Oct 2014 13:43:46 EST mellow mushroom pizza is my favorite We have a couple of mellow mushrooms in my town and I love their pizza. We used to go almost every Saturday to have mellow mushroom pizza. One of the MM is decorated with a space theme and the girls call it Pizza Planet (from Toy Story.)

We haven't gone since i started JC and yesterday was the day. It was Emmy's last day of preschool and I was wanting to commemorate it somehow. It was a sweet day, perfect weather, a great time. The girls loved it and the pizza was delicious. I... Wed, 21 May 2014 09:16:27 EST My fat pants are fat pants once again! + WI I started this journey at 254 lbs in August 2012 and was able to get down to 197 lbs by my 40th birthday (July 2013). When I was at my heaviest, I was doing a job that required I wear jeans every day. I didn't have any jeans that fit, so I went out and bought 2 new pair. When I lost weight, and my "fat clothes" didn't fit anymore, I gave most of them away, but I kept those 2 pairs of jeans so I could judge just how far I have come.

This past winter, as the pounds were piling on... Mon, 19 May 2014 09:16:30 EST Feeling disconnected There is so much stress at work, morale is low, I am feeling disconnected from pretty much everything and every one. This week I will be living by my calendar as I run around and try to get all the last week of school stuff done. The following week the kids go to their grandma's house and I will have a week to play catch up before I leave for a month. So, in short, still crazy around these parts.

There as a tragic car accident in my town last week and a child was killed and 2 ot... Sat, 17 May 2014 21:54:27 EST Still here, still crazy I hate this time of year. You guys might call this spring, I call it proposal season. It is a time when work gets insane.

I have been very happy to have my jenny craig "grab and go" options for lunch and dinner these days. I still have to do a little prep work. For lunch, I take a big tupperware with 1-2 cups of lettuce in it and a cucumber and knife. I cut up the cucumber at work, toss it with dressing I already have at work.

For dinner, I have to make my veggi... Tue, 13 May 2014 23:35:32 EST fruit pizza Today is my mom's birthday and she requested fruit pizza instead of cake. Fruit pizza (the way we make it) is a sugar cookie base with cream cheese icing and fruit on top. So good. I splurged and had a big piece. I tracked everything and wasn't over too bad.

I always feel bad for mom because her birthday is always right around mother's day so it is hard to take her to dinner. She wanted to go to outback but both outbacks in our town were completely booked all night. We went t... Sat, 10 May 2014 20:43:58 EST Diabetes, Diabetes! Do you guys remember the song "Rock me Amadeus"? The chorus starts with "Amadeus, Amadeus! Amadeus!" 80s music at its height.

When I crave something that I don't want to eat, I sing this song to myself replacing Amadeus with Diabetes. My big motivator for losing weight is to not get diabetes.

My brother, 1 year older than me, has diabetes now. He is taking oral meds. My mom has it, my aunts and uncles, my grandparents (before they died). I had gestational diabet... Sat, 10 May 2014 08:39:14 EST Ordered more food I am supposed to be out of JC food this week, but due to taking some meals off here and there and traveling, I have enough to go an extra week or so. I counted up everything today and realized I should go ahead and order (it takes ~5 days to arrive). I used their website and just ordered the meals that I have liked plus a few that I haven't tried yet and didn't get in my first two shipments.

When I first started JC, I didn't want to eat their desserts or snacks, instead opting ... Thu, 8 May 2014 19:14:29 EST Four more Jenny Craig food reviews I have tried four more new things.

Lunch:
DON"T LIKE
Chipotle Chicken - This was spicy in a bad way. It wasn't inedible (I finished it) but I wouldn't choose to have it again.

Dinner:
LIKE:
Cheese Ravioli - this was a very saucy dish. It is "shelf staple" (doesn't have to be frozen) which is a little weird. The taste was ok and there was enough sauce to mix all my veggies in there too.

OK:
Chicken Pasta Parmesan - This was a froze... Thu, 8 May 2014 09:32:51 EST Roasted eggplant - it's whats for dinner! For the last several days I have roasted and eaten an entire eggplant for dinner. I made my husband stop at the grocery store yesterday and get an eggplant for me (he came home with two - smart man!) because I ran out from my shopping trip this weekend. I just cut it up (leaving the peel on), throw in on a pan sprayed with cooking spray, salt and pepper, then cook on 450 for 30 minutes. I can't seem to get enough of it.

I should add, I am also eating my jenny craig meal for dinn... Wed, 7 May 2014 22:49:38 EST Reality smacking me in the face Summer. Theoretically, I love summer. Vacation. Beach. Lovely weather. This summer, not so much. I tried on my shorts from last year and they are either inappropriate-to-be-warn-in-public tight or do not zip up at all. Great.

Last summer, the summer of my 40th, I was in such a good place both emotionally and physically. I ran my first 5k, took several great vacations with the family and my husband, and, most importantly for this blog post, bought a bunch of new clothes an... Tue, 6 May 2014 13:16:14 EST New challenge and more food reviews I have been on travel for the last three days and I did not make good decisions with my diet. :( Getting back on the bandwagon now that I am back.

I have 1 month until my next trip and I am going to try to make the most of it. I am going to do a 30 day challenge of 1 mile walk/day plus some planned ST. I am also back on Jenny Craig and had JC lunch and dinner.

Here is an update on what I have liked since my last blog entry. Luckily I have liked everything I tried si... Sat, 3 May 2014 22:10:46 EST Jenny Craig Food Review I have finished up 2 weeks on Jenny Craig and got my second shipment of food today. I thought I would record for posterity (and my own future reference if I decide to order food again) what I have liked and hated.

I haven't tried everything yet by a long shot, but so far I have several that I really like and one complete clunker. I find this encouraging. Here is the run down.

(Caveat - I don't generally like frozen food, particularly frozen meat. Your mileage may v... Fri, 25 Apr 2014 22:53:09 EST Trying Jenny Craig I am still here, quietly tracking and plugging along. Life has taken a turn for the crazier than normal, crazier than I can remember in a long time. As a result, I have decided to try Jenny Craig. I wanted something easy, that I could just grab and go. I have been doing it about 10 days now and like it ok so far. Some of the food is pretty tasty (better than your average lean cuisine) while other meals aren't. They basically sent me one of everything and I am working my way through all ... Tue, 22 Apr 2014 18:16:42 EST Restart + 2 weeks : Weigh in I weighed in this morning and was very happy to see a loss of 2.2 lbs (was 236.6, now 234.4). I had a good week, but I know that sometimes, even after a good week and especially after a big drop, I don't see weight loss. Even though I was ok with food this week, I was very sedentary as work was crazy.

Seeing the number go down is encouraging, but I am not focusing on the number too much. When I took some time off the scale, I put it in my laundry room. I have left it there so... Sat, 15 Mar 2014 09:44:55 EST 10 day streak! I am really proud of myself, I have been tracking for 10 days straight. It hasn't been a perfect 10 days, but I have tracked the imperfections.

A few months ago, I read Potatoes Not Prozac and it recommends having a very high protein breakfast and eating 3 meals a day with no snacks. I have been doing both, for the most part. The breakfast I settled on is 2 eggs, a bowl of berries with a few spoonfuls of greek yogurt on top. It has 22 grams of protein. I have also cut back on ... Wed, 12 Mar 2014 19:18:04 EST Weigh in It has been a good week! I have tracked my food daily and stayed right in the range of calories. I only did formal exercise once, but I got lots of steps and did a lot of standing. Work this week was very stressful, I am planning on working this weekend too.

Last week I weighed in at 243. I didn't even want to post this number because I knew most of it was water retention, I was so swollen from my flight from Norway. My feet were huge and achy, my whole body felt like a balloo... Sat, 8 Mar 2014 07:22:28 EST Finding my mojo In February, I gave myself a break from the scales, the counting, the food obsession. I needed that. It was a welcome break, though I had lots of real world distractions with trips home, deadlines at work and a European trip.

March is here and I found my mojo! When I was on the plane home from Europe, I decided to recommit to tracking and get back on track exercising. I weighed in this morning, stocked the fridge, tracked all day. I took a long walk yesterday and today I we... Mon, 3 Mar 2014 19:01:13 EST Back from snowpocalypse I went back to TN to take care of my mom during her second surgery. The surgery was on Tuesday and I was hosting a retirement party on Saturday. I live in the south and we had a bad snow storm in between Tuesday and Saturday. It was very stressful to have to get back home. I got back 2 days later than I planned and only had 1 day to prep for the party.

The party was last night and went great. I think the retiree really enjoyed it. It was a lot of work but I am glad i did it. ... Sun, 16 Feb 2014 09:49:41 EST Feeling happier Friends, about a week ago I wrote a blog post about how I was taking a break from nutritional tracking and the scale. I needed time to let myself be and not be obsessed (in a good or destructive way) about the numbers.

Today, a week later, I am feeling a lot happier. When I am making a decision to eat something, I am not thinking "how many calories are in it?" I get to ask myself "Do I want to eat it? Would I rather have something else? Is this the best option?" I can actually... Mon, 10 Feb 2014 08:26:52 EST Bad # 3 Yesterday our wall oven blew. It has broken twice before, recently, and after it broke this time, we decided to bite the bullet and replace it. I was frankly concerned the problem was in the electrical system because this time there was a foul odor when the heating element was turned on (the heating element never even got hot). Even more, we decided to take out the built in microwave (above it) and get a double oven. A double wall oven is not cheap, it will probably cost around $2000 and ... Tue, 4 Feb 2014 17:39:07 EST February Fitness Goal I have been really inspired by SAWYERPATTI (she is an extremely cool chic, go check her out). She started climbing stairs last year. At first, she really struggled with it and now she is doing 1000 flights a month. I decided to make a stair goal for February. I didn't think I could do 1000, but I thought I could handle 300, roughly 10 flights a day.

I went to the gym for the first time on Sunday; it was the first time I had exercised in a while, since Christmas at least. I g... Mon, 3 Feb 2014 21:51:06 EST Giving up (but not on myself) I am slowly getting better from the cold I caught at my mom's house. Last night was the first night in a week I didn't take Nyquil. I didn't sleep very well, but that Nyquil was making my loopy.

I have been reading a lot of books lately that have really influenced how I look at myself and this journey I am on. I am very educated on what are healthy choices and not so healthy choices, how many calories are in a bowl of soup vs bag of chips, and how long I have to exercise to wo... Sun, 2 Feb 2014 09:13:11 EST chia seed update I started adding chia seeds to my cold oats for breakfast and I really like them. The only downside is that they absorb liquid so they make the oats/yogurt/milk combo denser but otherwise they have no flavor. I think I have settled on my high protein breakfast now:
2 eggs
cold oats:
- 0.25 cups of old-fashioned oats
- 0.25 cups of milk
- 6 ounces vanilla chobani 0% yogurt
- 1 TBSP chia seeds
- handful of blackberries and raspberries (or other fruit)
Sun, 26 Jan 2014 09:44:04 EST Back home, bad mood The week at my mom's was pretty rough. My mom's surgery went ok, but then my daughter became violently ill with a rotovirus and I got a bad head cold. In the midst, I succumbed to the chocolate in the house.

We came home a couple of days after the surgery through a snow storm. I was happy to be home, but the sink was piled high with dishes, there were several loads of dirty laundry, there wasn't anything in the fridge, and I was way behind at work. I feel like the maid, the c... Sat, 25 Jan 2014 19:17:22 EST Life at Mom's - Day 4 Things continue to be ok. So far, I have avoided the "candy mines" all around her house. We did go out for ice cream last night, but I tracked everything. I think I am getting a cold (that or my sinuses and throat are super dry from the heat). The upside is that I am drinking a ton of water and sleeping a lot.

It is supposed to be nice today, then cold again the rest of the week. I would like to take a walk today, I brought my new garmin to try out (I got it for Christmas).... Mon, 20 Jan 2014 08:46:47 EST Life at mom's - sweetspalooza I arrived at my mom's house on Friday night and quickly realized why all my children love to visit Grandma's house - there are sweets *everywhere* here. There was a huge open bag of peanut M&Ms, a big bag of mixed minature candy (like you give out at halloween), another bag of full sized snicker bars. If that wasn't enough, she had just bought a valentine's pack of kitkats. There was box of entemann's donuts on the table, ice cream sandwiches and popsicles in the freezer. (Did I mention m... Sun, 19 Jan 2014 09:35:28 EST Weigh in, fitbit I weighed in at 230.2, -3.8 from my last weigh in (about 11 days ago).

After much searching, I found my fitbit yesterday. I am wearing it now.

I am leaving this afternoon to go to my mom's house for the week. She is having surgery next week, I am just there to drive and take care of her. I hope to keep my diet in check while there. Fri, 17 Jan 2014 08:33:18 EST Food journal and Flax vs Chia? Step 2 of the PNP program is to keep a food journal, not for calorie counting (I am doing that here) but for what you eat, the time you eat, and how you feel before/after/during both physically and emotionally. I originally thought about keeping it online or on my ipad, but I really wanted sometime tactile, so I bought a journal yesterday, one that would fit in the side pocket of my purse. I chose a leather bound one with micky mouse embossed on the cover. It seemed a strange choice, even ... Tue, 14 Jan 2014 09:23:52 EST New breakfast Wowza! I am in love! I tried "cold oats" this morning and it was wonderful. I made it with greek yogurt and added blackberries and raspberries. The recipes said to add milk too, I will do that tonight because the result of just yogurt was a little too thick. It was just like a yogurt parfait with some chewy oats mixed in. Yum!

If you guys have any other (high protein) breakfast ideas, let me know!

Though I am still working on Step 1, I am going to start doing Step... Mon, 13 Jan 2014 08:17:08 EST Trying something new I found a lot of success last year going no sugar/no flour, but then in the summer over our vacations, I started eating sugar/flour again. I haven't been able to get back off of it and I have gained weight and feel like a slug. So I am taking a new approach.

I read the book potatoes not prozac over vacation and decided to try her (very slow) approach to removing sugar from my diet. There are 7 steps to the program and you are encouraged to take as long as you need on each step... Sun, 12 Jan 2014 09:31:49 EST Bikram : Hate to love it I love Bikram yoga. I love being done with Bikram yoga. I love feeling strong while I am doing Bikram yoga. But I hate that I love it. I would much rather be anywhere else than in a 105 degree room exercising.

After a long absence, I finally made it back to yoga on Sunday afternoon. The first class was hard, I left defeated. At no other time did I realize just how far I set myself back having a 3 month vacation from my healthy lifestyle. Not only was I not at the same plac... Wed, 30 Oct 2013 09:40:51 EST An on-track day! Yesterday was the first time in a while that I have been within my calorie goal. Though I have been tracking now for a couple of weeks, I have been over my calorie range daily, sometimes just 100 calories over, more often 400+ calories over. I was eating healthy stuff, just too much of it, so I wasn't stressing about it.

Anyway, happy to finally be within calorie goal. It was mainly because I had a late lunch and didn't snack in the afternoon. Dinner was a big meal, but light, ... Tue, 29 Oct 2013 10:04:50 EST New goal I changed my goal in sparkpeople to be 199 by Jan 1. I did this without thinking about the time I have left to reach the goal. It is about 9 weeks to Jan 1, with three big trips and two big holidays. Perhaps trying to lose 17 lbs in 9 weeks is setting myself up for failure. I am not changing my goal, just realizing it might not be realizable.

The big trips:
1) I am going to spend 10 days in Japan in November. I have been to Japan many times for work and I struggle every ... Sun, 27 Oct 2013 11:24:59 EST Saturday Farmer's Market We have a great fruit and veggie stand about 30 minutes away from where I live. It is an orchard that also sells vegetables and herbs. I follow them on facebook and on Friday they announced they had pink lady apples. Pink ladies are my favorite so I knew I would be making the 30 minutes drive this Saturday morning. I took my youngest daughter with me and we made a nice morning of it. We bought the apples, some pears, turnips, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes.

On the way home we pa... Sun, 27 Oct 2013 11:00:35 EST working vs not working I feel strange even bringing this up. I am not trying to offend anyone.

I work. I have worked full time my entire adults life. I love my job and I went to school many years to have this job. I wouldn't give it up without a really good reason.

When I had kids, I really considered not working. We had difficulties conceiving. It took use over a year to get pregnant with my first child and 2.5 years to get pregnant with our second. (The third was a very happy surpris... Sat, 26 Oct 2013 08:47:01 EST Loving the middle ground I have been going through my spark email for the last few weeks, email I have been studiously avoiding. I found a link to this featured blog article:

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=5507580

which spoke to me. I feel like I spent the first 9 months of this journey in the sweet spot (and lost 58 lbs) then 3 months in the pit of despair (and regained 23 lbs). Now I am happy to be back in the middle ground. Fri, 25 Oct 2013 17:14:07 EST Friday weigh in My second week getting back on track - woop woop! I am definitely getting back into the groove. My desire to save money and not eat out for lunch is definitely helping. I ate my lunch at work 3 times this week and we ate in every night. I am going to eat lunch out today. Tonight I am making a new dinner.

So, the weigh in. I am now at 216, down 0.8 lbs from last week. :) Down 4 lbs from my weight two weeks ago.

Fri, 25 Oct 2013 07:16:19 EST Opposite of NS victory Well, damn.

Last Christmas I got a pair of jeans from my mom. At the time I got them, they were too tight. I remember the day, a couple of months later, when the fit, it was such a good day. I tried them on today. No fit. :(

Oh well! Another goal.

The clothes issue is a big one because I am back to having only a few things in my closet that fit me and now I need to go back to winter clothes.

I am tracking my breakfast and lunch, but not my... Thu, 24 Oct 2013 09:47:55 EST Mood On the new sparkpeople front page, they have a mood rating so every time I log in, I am asking myself "What is my mood?"

Right now my mood is fantastic. I just found out my daughter, who struggles to make Cs, made a 96 on a test. We were studying for that test for a week. What a great accomplishment.

I had a great lunch - leftovers from last night. I made eggplant componata which I have never had but sounded good. It has eggplant, raisins, cocoa, tomato paste, and... Tue, 22 Oct 2013 13:12:44 EST Lunch made! Goal acheived! While I was furloughed, we had to dip into our savings to pay our bills. What I realized was that our savings were not as deep as they need to be. Luckily, my husband wasn't furloughed this last time, but he is a government contractor and could be in the future. So we decided to make a concerted effort to build up our savings in case this happens again anytime soon.

One of our goals - stop eating out so much. Mike and I both eat out for lunch each day which runs about $500 a ... Mon, 21 Oct 2013 09:22:33 EST Sunday = Crazy After a relaxing Saturday, it makes sense that Sunday would be particularly crazy. This morning I took the kids to get their halloween costumes. I hate halloween costumes for girls. They are all basically the same costume (a little dress) with different colors. For instance, one of my girls wanted to be Hello Kittie and the Hello Kittie costume was a poorly made, too short, too expensive dress with Hello Kittie on the front. Nope. I would rather go to target and spend $15 on a real hell... Sun, 20 Oct 2013 21:54:23 EST I love Saturday Today was just a great fall day. I slept in, a rare occurrence. We took the girls to a movie and out to a burrito place for lunch. We sat outside and it was the perfect temperature with our jackets on. We came home and I did laundry and made a late dinner. I made a caprese salad and roast veggies. I just threw all the veggies I hadn't cooked this week into a roasting pan and tossed with garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper. It was so good.

We tried two new veggies this week, a... Sat, 19 Oct 2013 20:25:08 EST A good week I have had a good week!

+ I lost 3.2 lbs! I went from feeling swollen to feeling more normal. I really upped my water this week and reduced processed food so I attribute that to my deflating.

+ This week i worked on improving my diet. Maybe next week I will add exercise or maybe not. I am taking it slow and trying to focus on simple goals.

+ I was very excited to try some new recipes from Vegucation of Robin. All of them were good, my favorites were g... Fri, 18 Oct 2013 07:15:28 EST Hello again I have had a crazy month.

First of all, as I think I have mentioned before, we had a flood at the beginning of August. It was 2 months till they fixed the damage. It was finally done the first week of October. During the last few days when they were replacing the flooring, we stayed in a hotel. Our lives were very displaced. Now that we are back in the house, we still haven't figured out where everything is/was.

Second of all, I am a furloughed government employee... Sat, 12 Oct 2013 08:56:17 EST Cleaning the house, clearing the head When life overwhelms me, I let everything go. I put on blinders and do what has to be done, and only what has to be done. I focus. Even in there is down time in the middle of a stressful situation, I remain focused, reading a book in 2 days or watching every episode of a TV show back to back.

When life eases up a bit and I take stock of the things around me, usually the first thing I do is clean my house. I am not a good house keeper in the best of times and in the worst of tim... Mon, 23 Sep 2013 10:34:46 EST the truth I am really struggling here guys. I come back to SP and have a good day or week, then go off and binge. I am depressed, stressed, apathetic. I thought fall would bring a routine with school and I would be able to use that to my advantage, but it has just brought more stress. I feel like I have let go and I can't grab back on. Fri, 13 Sep 2013 10:12:19 EST weigh in + quick update I weighed in this morning at 210.4, -4.2 from last week, WooHoo!

My legs must have been swollen because I went from not being able to comfortably cross my legs to being able to so that felt like a NSV right away.

My week has been good on nutrition, except for Wednesday when we did a group dinner at Mellow Mushroom (my work group). I have done 30 day shred three times, but not in the last 2 days. I am running around like a crazy person because we are going to a reunion ... Fri, 30 Aug 2013 07:31:18 EST Day 3 done! Whew, 30 day shred is kicking my behind. My quads are still killing me, I went to bed with a hot pad last night. But doing every day feels like it is working it out a little bit. Plus I took a 1 mile walk with the family. We are trying to get our kids to take a walk every day (with us). They used to really complain about the hilly 1 mile loop through our neighborhood, but it is growing on them. They have started racing each other to the next mailbox, taking turns walking the dog, telli... Tue, 27 Aug 2013 21:48:54 EST
