Thu, 2 Jan 2014 21:15:02 EST Bread and Jam for Francis DH and I have made our own Jam for several years - ever since we decided we didn't like HFCS. So tonight I did my beginning of the summer inventory. In the past year we have eaten or given away 31 jars of jam, representing 316 oz.

I tried to paste the spreadsheet to the blog - but it didn't keep the table, and I couldn't figure out how to save as a picture to post it. The most frequently gifted flavor was marmalade, and we are almost out of cherry.

I hope the fruit is... Fri, 1 Jun 2012 20:27:00 EST Excuses vs. Reasons This was written by one of the participants on an Asperger's support group that I am on. I'm blogging it here to remember.

"Sometimes people get confused between an excuse and a reason. With an excuse, you are seeking to be excused from being responsible or learning or fixing whatever it is. With a 'reason' you can begin to explore how to work on changing things or providing appropriate modifications and tools. Just as an example, if you have a blind child would someone say "Oh th... Several of you responded to ask how he was doing, but the response was too long for a status update, so here it is (hope it's not TMI).

S was running to school while wearing his backpack, as he often does. On Thursday morning, he tripped and with his weak core and generally slow reaction times wasn't able to catch himself. So he landed face first... Fri, 4 Nov 2011 18:24:21 EST Muskmelon musings I like cantaloupe and other . But sometimes muskmelons have this "off" taste, almost oniony or garlicy. Does anyone know the science behind why cantaloupe sometimes tastes like that?

Is it -

a) Because it was stored near onions in the fridge and absorbed the odor from the onions?
b) Because wooden cutting boards retain onion flavored compounds and are generous?
c) Something to do with the exact mineral/nutrient balance of the soil they were grown in?
d) ... Fri, 12 Aug 2011 22:20:09 EST Planning for the 9 Days It's coming up on the 9 days before the Jewish Holiday of Tisha B'Av, which is a fast day commemorating the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. May communities have the tradition of not eating meat in the 9 days preceding the holiday as a symbol of mourning. With our current flexitarian tendencies, this is the 2nd year that I am planning for a meatless 9 days. Here's the current plan:

Sunday - Stuffed Zucchini

Monday - Mushroom Barley soup, salad, bread, and chees... Sun, 31 Jul 2011 09:54:19 EST Musing on Tracking As many of you know, I really joined Sparkpeople in hopes that I would be motivated to exercise more consistently rather than to lose weight. And while I took of 10 vanity pounds when I first joined, I've been very inconsistent on exercising since R stopped his skating lessons in February and they mostly crept back. So about a week ago, I started over at Stage 1. I'm back to logging, back to cutting down on 2nds, back to trying to tame the work-day snacking (my office ALWAYS has food out)... Wed, 27 Jul 2011 21:16:04 EST Cooking Frenzy Weekend Oh no! Ari is blogging about food again. I’m afraid I need to move my musings to locavore/flexitarian site instead since I always seem to be writing about cooking.

Anyway, we spent a rare summer weekend at home and I had a bursting refrigerator and a little bit of time. So I went to the farm market to buy fruit and odds and ends to supplement the CSA bounty and then came home and started cooking. Items with a * came from the CSA.

On Saturday, I made:
Apricot Jam... Over the next 40 years, Mendel’s 8 brothers and sisters, along with their 3 first cousins, all came to America. In 1986, over 200 descendents from this family held a reunion in the Catskills to celebrate 100 years in America. I was 16 at that reunion. The Borsht belt of the Catskills were starting to fade, but several of the hotels were still in decent shape.
... Mon, 20 Jun 2011 21:29:36 EST CSA Season We picked up our first box from the CSA this week. As expected, the contents were a little sparse, but I know that will pick up quickly.

Yummy goodness included:
4 heads of lettuce
Spinach
tiny turnips (tender enough to peel and eat raw)
mint

I haven't decided if I am going to repeat the weekly veggie inventory blogs like I did last year. I'm leaning against it - as just one more thing to do while already overly busy.

Tonight's dinner f... While we were walking we dodged the crew coaches on bicycles as the pedaled up and down timing the ra... Sun, 15 May 2011 10:45:18 EST Freezer inventory I'm still slowly putting my house back to rights after Passover and it had been several months since I updated the freezer inventory. So tonight, I took a few minutes and went through both the chest freezer and the one in our kitchen.

Oldest thing I knew about - the shredded zucchini from last summer's CSA season. We also still have 3 bags of cooked pumpkin.

Oldest thing I didn't remember we had - a small bag of boneless, skinless, chicken thighs.

Not sure... Fri, 13 May 2011 21:39:09 EST Happy Mother's Day Happy Mother's Day friends. I hope you both get some nice pampering and have a productive weekend.

Yesterday was a full day - we did a 30 minute family housework blitz in right after breakfast - the kids picked up their books and clothing in the living room, then swept their bedrooms, DH swiped the bathrooms and I repacked a box of Passover stuff to get it out of the dining room.

DS7 and I went off to his baseball game, then joined DH and DS8 at the track meet. Fri, 6 May 2011 21:55:39 EST Team Trials My older son, S, is running track this spring. He is the 2nd slowest of the 3rd graders. The problem is that the slowest kid in his age group is also noticeably slower than all of the 1st and 2nd graders. "Z" is a sweet kid and he and my S are becoming friends. I love that _every_ child is encouraged to run to the best of their ability (in fact, the team is chock full of mild ASD and ADHD kids pretty much like my S) and every child is urged to improve against their previous performance as ... Tue, 1 Feb 2011 13:58:58 EST 2011 goals I joined SparkPeople as motivation to become more fit. I got really gung-ho last January, participating in the beginning of the year bootcamp. Sat, 1 Jan 2011 23:15:33 EST I HAS FREEZER!!! DH just reported that he took delivery of my new freezer!!! After over a year of wanting to do so, but not being able to justify the cash flow, DH bought me a 7.0 cubic ft chest freezer during the CyberMonday sales. DH has been joking that he bought me the lamb sized freezer, but not the pig or cow sized one.

I'm happy - The new freezer should be big enough to relieve the crowding upstairs, allow me to preserve the extra produce from the CSA, buy small quantities of meat from t... Wed, 15 Dec 2010 14:50:21 EST Perfectly sized turkey There were only 5 of us this year for Thanksgiving, DH, MIL, my 2 kids and I. We got a perky 13 lb turkey. Wed, 13 Oct 2010 23:16:51 EST Financial Advisor? After failing to make sufficient time to actually carry through with setting up a savings and spending plan (I HATE the word budget) and consolidating the too many retirement accounts worth less than $10K, DH and I are seriously considering hiring a financial advisor.
