AMYNYNJ's SparkPeople Blog AMYNYNJ's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Bad girl! BF parents are visiting and we decided to take a long weekend road trip. everyday I'm at the whim of their terrible eating habits. They don't eat lunch and we're on the road so I can't stop if they don't want to. So every night has been a pig out fest. All you can eat breakfast, Surf and turf, pasta, beer, wine, shots... It's total insanity. At least there is a gym in the hotel, so we've been getting up early to work out. I've been going over my calories every day so I know I gained back 5 lb... Sat, 26 May 2012 23:10:10 EST 9 weeks post knee surgery Well I'm doing about 90% better since I had my knee surgery 9 weeks ago. I'm still not walking down the stairs properly but it's mostly better. I'm exercising regularly now and trying to do as much as I am allowed to do every day. My physical therapist says I can start running again next week, I'm just not sure what she means by running. I was never a treadmill person, in fact I hate them and feel very insecure on them. I like to run outside, but pavement is usually too hard on the knees. So ... Mon, 14 May 2012 23:10:45 EST Progress not perfection Well I just keep pigging out on chocolate lately. It seems like every day there is some kind of calorie bomb being offered. It is very hard to resist when it's right in front of you. On a positive note, usually fruit is also offered. I'm tracking every bite, so that's half the battle. On a positive note I have been exercising regularly, so the net effect is I haven't gained or lost. It's not a bad thing considering I can't do any major cardio right now. I was looking over my charts and saw my... Tue, 8 May 2012 23:36:57 EST House hunting So we're planning to move into bigger place this year and have started searching on-line for the house we will live in for the next 20+ years. There is this great channel here in the US called HGTV (home and garden television). I must say I've become quite the addict. I really want to win one of those backyard make overs or even just make over any room. That would be so much fun! Mon, 30 Apr 2012 23:52:19 EST Health Insurance So most of you know me already but here's a little background. I had ACL surgery 7 weeks ago and have now been recovering and going to Physical therapy 3 times per week. So I just found out from my bastard health insurance company that they only approved 20 PT visits. My physical therapist is fighting for more visits, but she said it's a common occurrence. So I look it up on-line and sure enough 1000's of on-line complaints of insurance companies not giving enough PT visits post op. Well the ... Sun, 29 Apr 2012 23:16:43 EST Running In four more weeks I'm allowed to run again. I can't believe it has been 6 weeks since my knee surgery. I still don't feel 100 percent, but that is to be expected. I wonder what my physical therapist is going to have me do this week. Whatever it is I'm ready. I really want to get back to where I was. Anyway have a good week my spark friends. Sun, 22 Apr 2012 23:56:40 EST New school First day at my new job. It was very quiet today. I still don't have computer access so I had to sit around all day. I occupied my time with trade magazines and papers. The new place has an awesome cafeteria with a great salad bar, so there is no need for me to bring lunch to stay healthy. I'm going to try it for a couple of days to see if it's cost effective. If I can save money by bringing in lunch I think I will do that, but I also don't want to be anti social with my coworkers. Sometimes ... Mon, 9 Apr 2012 23:44:41 EST Work So tomorrow is my last day at my old job. I'm looking forward to starting my new job, but I will miss my coworkers. They're all good people and it was a good place to work but it's time to move on. Thu, 5 Apr 2012 23:20:36 EST Day 22 Post op I'm walking without the crutches at home, but with the crutches outside. It's more of a protection rather than a need. I'm limping a little but it's very quickly going away. It depends how well rested I am. For example this morning I wasn't limping at all, but in the afternoon it gets worse and my muscles get sore. Still doing PT 3x per week. It's kind of a grueling schedule, but I have to do it. They put me on the exercise bike last week for 10 mins each PT session with no resistance. I was... Tue, 3 Apr 2012 22:40:41 EST Making Progress Slowly starting to walk without crutches, but only at home and in the Physical Therapists office. It's such a great feeling making progress. As far as my diet is concerned, I've been really good through all this. I've maintained my current weight, which is all I can hope for without being able to do cardio. So I view this as success. Fri, 30 Mar 2012 08:33:55 EST Woo hoo! I finally started walking on my bum leg, slowly with a little bit of weight bearing exercise. So this means I will be off the crutches soon. And I got to go on the exercise bike for 10 minutes today at the physical therapist office. The pain in my leg is almost gone to the point where I don't need the heavy pain killers anymore. I finally feel like I'm making progress and recovering. Thank you all for your support during this tough time. SP has really helped me to stay on track. Wed, 28 Mar 2012 00:20:15 EST First day back to work I'm exhausted! Well it was back to work for me today. My leg is feeling much better. I won't need the pain meds at all soon. The only thing that really stunk today was taking getting to work on crutches. My commute is basically 3 blocks to the subway, into manhattan, 1 change of trains and then a 3 block walk to my office. What normally takes me about 35 minutes took an hour and 10 minutes today! It is definitely slow going on the crutches. Plus the only elevator is when I change trains half ... Mon, 26 Mar 2012 21:52:39 EST Sunday What a great weekend! I'm finally starting to feel better and spring is finally here. Have great start to the week everyone. Sun, 25 Mar 2012 18:31:02 EST Saturday So it's been 12 days since my ACL surgery and today I'm venturing out into Manhattan for the first time since. I am feeling better everyday and I feel pretty strong with a moderate, bearable level of pain, so I think I'll be ok. If I get too tired we will come home early. In a way this is a practice run for when I return to work on Monday. I will need to take the subways, so now I get to take the subway with crutches and less people on it to see how it goes. We're only going out for a few hou... Sat, 24 Mar 2012 15:35:20 EST Friday So today is my last day home from work. I don't really want to go back, but i have to. I did my exercises today. I'm way under my calories for today and trying to figure out what to eat. Any good snack ideas? Fri, 23 Mar 2012 17:41:04 EST Good day I feel much better today than I did yesterday so I know I'm getting better. Didn't sleep much at all last night, but I woke up to beautiful weather today. Went to PT did all my exercises. Stuck with my nutritional plan and had a good day overall. Thu, 22 Mar 2012 16:25:16 EST Day 9 post op hmmm. Starting to get a little frustrated with the pain in my leg. I asked the physical therapist how long it takes for the pain to subside and she said she can't say because everyone is different. Said for some people it takes up to 6 weeks! Then when she saw the look on my face she said not to get discouraged because I'm doing really well and she thinks it won't take that long. She said for some people the pain the leg pain post op is so bad they cry when bending and straightening. So I gue... Wed, 21 Mar 2012 22:13:03 EST Day8 Getting better and better. I can switch to Advil once my pain meds run out, so that's progress. Slept in today. Ate a healthy breakfast, spent the whole morning on the phone catching up with friends and family. Finally did my exercises at 2. A little stir crazy given the nice weather. But I can fill up my time catching up with chores. Have good healthy day all. Tue, 20 Mar 2012 14:07:58 EST Day 7 post op Slowly getting better. I still can't walk without crutches but bending and straightening is getting better, still very painful, but getting better. PT shouldn't be called physical therapy but pain and torture. The therapist is the nicest girl and really good but it's still very intensely painful. I think the pain is getting less and less, but it's hard to tell. I'm doing my exercises everyday as I'm prescribed and hopefully I'll be able to start putting weight on my leg by the end of the week... Mon, 19 Mar 2012 21:02:30 EST Day 5 post op Getting better little by little. Good day. Not as much pain in the middle of the night, was finally able to sleep mostly. I woke up around 5 and watched a little tv, suddenly i heard a car crash outside. Called 911 and watched from the window, i hope the driver is ok. Went back to sleep until 10:30ish. Then I did my exercises, had breakfast, filed my taxes and made a bunch of family and friends phone calls. Napped on the couch for an hour. We decided to go out to dinner, so we met up with our... Sun, 18 Mar 2012 00:00:10 EST Day 4 post op Today was rough. I had a job interview on crutches, then I went to physical therapy. My friend drove me to the interview and it was just draining talking to her in the car to and from my appointments. In total I was out a total of 6 hours today and it was painful. I'm really looking forward to staying home tomorrow. I will do my exercises of course but at least I don't have to go anywhere. Fri, 16 Mar 2012 23:55:19 EST Good - no great - day! Tough day today but very rewarding. Day3 post-op, went to my doctor for a followup exam. I still had some major fluid around the knee so the doc drained to take some of the pressure off. Then we did some exercises, straightening and flexing my leg, it was tough, painful in fact but felt good after. Then after the orthopedist I went to the physical therapist for the first appointment. That was also really painful but gradually felt better toward the end of the session. The best was the last 15... Thu, 15 Mar 2012 17:20:52 EST Self sufficiency Getting better little by little. Yesterday I could not lift my leg on my own, now I'm slowly starting to get muscle strength back. The pain killers were really helpful for taking the edge off. I got a ton of phone calls today. My coworkers sent me cookies and fruit. I have great friends and coworkers. Tue, 13 Mar 2012 20:51:42 EST One way to get a good workout Well I'm home from the hospital. I did amazingly well on the crutches, but it sure takes a lot of effort. I had to go up 4 flights on crutches. I'm exhausted! Mon, 12 Mar 2012 18:39:49 EST Surgery Well tomorrow is the big day. Surgery to repair my torn meniscus and ACL. I think the worst part of it will be getting home from the hospital. I live in a 4th floor apartment with no elevator. Plus we have a loft bedroom. So they told me I will have to go up the stairs on my butt. I'm going to sleep on the couch in the living room until I can get up the stairs to the bedroom. The couch is not the most comfortable but I guess it's better than being stuck up in the bed and not being able to get... Sun, 11 Mar 2012 10:56:28 EST Jobs and the economy Well it appears the economy is getting better, because I'm getting interviews left and right. There are jobs out there for me but they all seem to be paying lower. We were discussing this at work today... The economy is getting better, companies are hiring again but the salaries are lower than they were and there are still so many unemployed people that the companies won't go up even if they like you. I will prob hang on to my existing job for a bit because at least I have it and you never kn... Fri, 9 Mar 2012 14:53:27 EST Spreading the Spark I've been having Chris Downie moments... Some cute things have happened to me recently. My boss is trying to loose weight for a special event and came to me asking about "that website you do". Then my other coworker who sits directly next to me has been making an effort to loose and eat healthier. She hinted that I inspired her to do it. And thirdly I was working at the receptionist desk the other day. Since it's mostly private and unseen by everyone except when you first come in I decided to... Wed, 7 Mar 2012 23:55:07 EST March Madness I can't wait to get back to running. Sitting around waiting for my surgery is really annoying, but on a positive note I've found some strength exercises I can do: leg adduction, abduction, extensions, leg curls, leg raises, calf rocking and of course any abs and arms are safe for me to do. I'm not really into strength training, I rather run 5 miles, but at least it's something. Tue, 6 Mar 2012 15:28:34 EST Whining I'm a little freaked out by my upcoming surgery. Think I'm reading too many negative reviews on the Internet. A lot of folks saying their knee was never the same or had pain. Has anyone had a successful ACL surgery?
I did find a few interesting medical websites. My trainer says I should stop reading stuff on the Internet because I know everything I need to know about the surgery already and reading any more will just freak me out. Mon, 5 Mar 2012 23:35:22 EST Lazy I am so lazy this weekend. I've been sitting around all weekend doing nothing. I don't feel like doing anything, and my poor bf is getting cabin fever. Sometimes I just feel like doing nothing and now that I can't exercise the way I want to do I just feel like being lazy. Sun, 4 Mar 2012 13:05:48 EST Surgery My MRI results came back and I definitely will have to get surgery to repair my ACL (ligament in my left leg). Sat, 3 Mar 2012 18:52:35 EST Interviewing New haircut - done
New suit - done
Now to work on how to say things in a way so accentuate my best features. I think my problem is I'm too honest and let it all hang out. I really need to hold back more and be reserved. Wed, 29 Feb 2012 22:08:49 EST Oscars Billy Crystal did a good job this year, I thought it was enjoyable with no major controversies. Angelina Jolie looked particularly skinny borderline anorexic. Cirque Du Soleil was amazing. Overall it was fun to watch while I was cooking all my meals for the week. Good night all. Sun, 26 Feb 2012 23:56:12 EST Comments about your weight? What is the worst comment people have made to you since you lost weight about how you looked before?
Don't get me wrong I like hearing from people that I look great and lost so much weight. I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth but some comments are just totally over the line of normal and some are in fact harmful. For example...
I really hate it when my family or anyone else makes additional comments. Both my aunts, my mother and my dad believe they are helping when they m... Fri, 24 Feb 2012 11:52:36 EST Winter? Where did it go? I'm thinking I should already go to the garden center to get my veggie seeds started for the season. Punxsutawney Phil is a big fat liar! Thu, 23 Feb 2012 23:25:01 EST Opera My boss is really cool, invited me to the Opera tonight. So I'm off to see Madame Butterfly. I love NY! Wed, 22 Feb 2012 18:21:35 EST Mardi Gras Seriously!? I think I need to avoid holidays centered around eating and drinking from now on. I got seriously fat on fat Tuesday! At least i worked out for 30 minutes. Tomorrow is a new day and I've already made my healthy lunch and snacks for tomorrow. Tue, 21 Feb 2012 22:20:57 EST Party girl I've been out almost every night this week. It's Karneval season. Karneval is the German version of Mardi gras. It's basically a non stop halloween party thursday before the catholic holiday of Ash Wednesday and ends this Tuesday. People dress up in wild costumes some political and some funny. So my friends and I get dressed up too and go to a couple of German bars in manhattan that are having Karneval parties. It's a lot of fun but it's really bad for my diet - too much beer. Sun, 19 Feb 2012 16:43:38 EST ACL Injury update So I went to my Doc yesterday and he says he's not a 100% sure but thinks I won't need surgery after all. He said he doesn't think my ACL is completely torn and I may have only a torn some cartilage, which may require a minor surgery but it's not as bad as a complete torn ACL. I definitely feel better (sometimes). Yesterday I felt really good almost 100%, but the day before and today I'm limping a little again. I have noticed though when I get a good nights sleep I definitely feel better so I... Fri, 17 Feb 2012 14:42:54 EST Drs. I'm actually looking forward to seeing the doc tomorrow. My leg has really been in pain lately. I managed to muster up the guts to ask for a seat on the train this evening. I just couldn't stand anymore. But then sitting all day is also uncomfortable. I can't get into a comfortable position when I eat, sleep, work, watch tv or anything. so I'm looking forward to seeing if he has some ideas on how to make me feel better. Wed, 15 Feb 2012 22:56:05 EST If I had to choose Between skiing and running I would choose skiing over running any day. But running had really increased my endurance and skiing ability by a factor of 10 it seems. But now I'm going to have to find something else to get passionate about for a little while it seems. I just don't get as much of a thrill from the machines at the gym as getting fresh air and being outside. I hope I can maintain my focus and drive until I can get my running legs back on. Sun, 12 Feb 2012 14:20:35 EST Feeling better So it's been almost a week since I injured my ACL ligament, and like clockwork I am feling much better. I can finally walk without crutches. I went to the pharmacy to get a different knee brace to get around everyday with. I'm not sure what to do about taking the subways to work. I don't really need the crutches but I will need to sit if my leg is feeling uncomfortable. It's not really obvious I'm injured unless I bring the crutches. I don't like to ask people to give up their seats, so I'm n... Sat, 11 Feb 2012 15:16:34 EST ACL surgery I'm definitely going to need ACL reconstructive surgery. I've been hearing/reading it can take anywhere from 3 months to a year to recover. Anybody here have this done? What were your experiences? Wed, 8 Feb 2012 16:44:43 EST ACL injury This sucks! 2 days into my 1 week ski vacation I injured myself badly. I was coming around a turn taking short stop and my left ski turned the wrong direction and twisted my knee. I heard and felt a little pop, excruciating pain for about 30 seconds and that was that. Ski season and marathon training is now over for me for at least 2 months. The ski patrol took me down to the emergency clinic and the doctor says I have torn my ACL and it's the most common ski injury. I will probably need surg... Mon, 6 Feb 2012 13:33:29 EST Airport I hate airports and I hate traveling. Everything is a major inconvenience all for the sake of a false sense of security. I like being safe as much as the next person but some of the safety measures are complete overkill. Like water bottles for example, I think it's obvious if I bring an unopened bottle of water it's just water. Last year I had to throw out a lotion because it was .5 oz over the stupid limit. I wish they would just use some common sense! Thu, 2 Feb 2012 22:52:47 EST Vacation Only 2.5 more days until my ski vacation. I can hardly wait. We have a few bosses visiting from our head office, but I'm totally distracted and focused on vacation. I keep trying ot remember everything I need to bring and what else I need to do to get things done this week. Even though I'm distracted, at least I'm being productive and getting things done. Wed, 1 Feb 2012 14:22:28 EST Superbowl Not that I have a huge interest in Superbowl, the only football I watch is the european kind 131 , except for the superbowl once a year. But like many I only watch it for the commercials. Usually I pick a team to root for and participate in the office pool. This year creates an interesting dynamic for me. I'm a New Yorker that grew up in New England, I'm rooting for the Giants. But on Facebook I'm not saying a word because my friends are generally split 50/50, Giants/Patriots. Since... Tue, 31 Jan 2012 14:26:52 EST 1/2 Marathon Training Schedule - suggestions wanted I need to write this all out and put it in my calendar so I can stick to my plan to complete my first 1/2 marathon on April 1st. Below is my training schedule. If anyone has any tips or suggestions for changes please let me know:

Sat 1/28 - (Saturday is the long run day) 8 miles - done Notes: 40-45F clear, A few bites of fruit salad and crustless quiche before, slow pace 11-13 min/mi good energy 8 miles completed walked an additional 1/2 mile, started with 20 oz of water finished a... Mon, 30 Jan 2012 14:53:03 EST Saturday What an awesome day. I ran 8.5 miles no problem. I bought a new pair of jeans from American Eagle to fit my new skinny sexy body. Got the laundry and grocery shopping done. And we rewarded ourselves with meal out for a change. Life is good. 334 Sat, 28 Jan 2012 23:49:14 EST 1/2 Marathon training I'm running my first 1/2 marathon on April fools day. I've been running about 15-20 miles per week (5 miles 3-4x per week) since about August. I stopped road running for the last few weeks due to pain in my knees. I still did cross training and a few shorter distances on the treadmill at the gym which I hated, but I thought the treadmill would be better on my knees. Anyhow I finally went to the doctor last week and got diagnosed with patella tendonitits. He suggested I order patella tendoniti... Fri, 27 Jan 2012 15:14:24 EST
