AMAZONRUNNER's SparkPeople Blog AMAZONRUNNER's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Day 32: First Month in Review Well, I just took my measurements and in one month I've lost one inch off my upper arms, 2 off my chest, 1 off my waist and 3 off my hips. My thighs stayed the same for a total of 8 inches lost.

My garden and landscaping have been neglected the past few years, so tackling that has become my primary source of exercise as I'm eager to plant organic veggies this year and to get the property looking prettier. I'm out there every other weekday and part of the weekend (the days I'm not ... Thu, 11 Apr 2013 00:39:52 EST Day 27: Gardening marathon It was a gorgeous day here in CT so I spent it in the garden! What a work-out! I spent 8-plus hours raking, bending, digging and lifting heavy bags of mulch and garden soil. My back is killing me and I am exhausted----yet elated that I was able to do it.

Just a few short weeks ago, I could not have spent even one hour gardening. Even though I had to take periodic breaks, there's a dramatic difference in my stamina AND my pants kept falling down, so I changed into an old pair of... Sat, 6 Apr 2013 01:23:44 EST DAY 26: Family Crisis I care for my 8-year old grand daughter and her father still has custody of a toddler. He recently called saying he couldn't care for the baby anymore and begged me to take him. I already care for two kids and can't handle anymore, so I got the family together and found another of my sons willing to take the baby.

This is an 18-hour drive to get the baby so it took several emotional days to prepare for the baby (crib, etc) and arrange to drive down there, the day we were suppos... Thu, 4 Apr 2013 21:35:50 EST Day nineteen: Spents 12-hours Gardening OMG, I spent 12-hours in the garden. I cleaned out the beds along the fence line where I plan to put in raspberries and blueberries. Then there was weeding and weeding and weeding...

I'm exhausted and my back isn't speaking to me! LOL I'll post photos over the weekend. Thu, 28 Mar 2013 22:07:38 EST Day Eighteen: Finally! Spring weather! Today was just another ordinary day. I watched Audra, my 21 month old grand daughter while the 8-year old,Nevaeh, was in school. Wednesday is a busy day as Nevaeh has gymnastics. There's just enough time to help her with her homework before racing off to gymastics. Then back home to make dinner. I would have loved some time in the garden today as it was beautiful out--but Wednesdays are impossible.

Tomorrow, I don't have the baby and Nevaeh will be in school all day. It's suppo... Wed, 27 Mar 2013 21:38:59 EST Day Seventeen: Weigh In Weigh in--good news bad news. The bad news is, my starting weight was actually higher than I remembered. The good news is, I weigh 375 now, so no matter how you slice it, I've lost weight!

I am exhausted. I didn't have to babysit for my toddler grand daughter today, so while the 8-yr old was in school, I spent all day clearing garden beds, pruning, and getting my garden ornaments out of the garage.

Then I went to Lowes and bought ten bags of mulch and, lemme tell ... Tue, 26 Mar 2013 23:01:30 EST Day Sixteen: Finally Feelin' Fantastic! I began clean, gluton-free eating about a month ago and officially started DDP yoga one week ago. I wanted to feel immediately and miraculously better right away--- but I didn't. When I was younger, if I started eating carefully and exercising I would bounce back quickly. Not so now--probably due to my age and health conditions.

I have been somewhat low energy most days and finding it difficult to exercise. I have been alternating between being afraid to hope that exercise and ... Mon, 25 Mar 2013 22:03:13 EST Day Fifteen: Back to normal My DH has been home from work since October, recovering from knee surgery. Between that, becoming custodial grandparents to an 8-yr old, and providing childcare for a baby--free time, privacy and peace & quiet have been rare treats.

DH is returning to work tomorrow, which will afford me some privacy (and control of the TV) while my grand daughter is in school and he's at work. I've basically had no "alone time" for 6 months and it's made me cuckoo for cocopuffs--literally! LOL <... Sun, 24 Mar 2013 21:26:07 EST Day Fourteen: Walk at the Beach

The visiting relatives had us a tad stressed out, so Jeff and I sneaked out to take a walk on the beach. Above is a photo of the beach and boardwalk here in West Haven, Connecticut. I LOVE walking here! The approaching figure in the red jacket is my husband and you can barely make out our loyal hound---Zeke!

Whole Foods sel... Sat, 23 Mar 2013 23:35:31 EST Day Thirteen: Yoga at sunrise I woke up at 5:30 and couldn't go back to sleep, so I did a DDP Yoga session!

My son and 20-month old grandson are visiting from Tennessee. I am exhausted. But just had to post a check-in. Fri, 22 Mar 2013 21:50:40 EST Day twelve: Feeling Groovy Today makes 3 1/2 weeks of clean, grain-free eating. While I've been feeling better, I wouldn't say that I felt great------until today!!!!!

Today I woke up more energetic than I've felt in years. We're having out-of-town guests for the weekend and I set about cleaning the guest room and my kitchen and living room with more vigor than I've felt in a long while. I'm still shocked by how much I got done! Then I made DH and I a great dinner of oven roasted veggies and grilled salmo... Thu, 21 Mar 2013 21:25:39 EST Day Eleven: Being a "fat head" One thing that I struggle with -- and I know other overweight people who have admitted to the same thing --- is an irrational fear that I won't be able to take the weight off no matter what I do.

Hey, intellectually, I know this is not true. Mentally, I know it's irrational! But that doesn't stop negative thoughts from bubbling up from my subconscious--thoughts that include, "You'll never lose weight so why bother;" or "You're post-menopausal with hypothyroid issues, this is a los... Wed, 20 Mar 2013 23:05:20 EST Day Ten: DDP Yoga Today, was my official day one doing the DDP yoga program. I did the diamond dozen and energy. Because of my high starting weight I had to modify some poses but it was inspiring to get started. My body is a bit sore, but in a good way!

I had an appointment with my PA today for a blood pressure check but they called and rescheduled it for next Tuesday. I was soooooo disappointed as I went grain-free 3 weeks ago and I feel so much better! I was dying to know how much weight I'v... Tue, 19 Mar 2013 21:36:28 EST Day Nine: Excited about weigh-in tomorrow! I have an appointment to see my PA for a blood pressure check to tomorrow and I'll be able to see how much weight I've lost since I was last there three weeks ago.

I have to say that I feel a bit better each day and my blood pressure seems to slowly but surely be trending lower and lower. Perhaps there's hope that I can get off all the meds one day or at least radically reduce them.

I'm tired, but made a commitment to myself to try to post every day for the first thirty... Mon, 18 Mar 2013 23:17:30 EST Day Eight: Gluten I have been reading about gluten in relation to overall health, but more specifically in relation to thyroid issues and asthma, both of which I have, so I am committed to eating gluten-free for at least 6-months, not merely for weight loss, but to see how my health improves. I've been eating a grain-free diet for 3 weeks. I have to see my PA for a blood pressure check on Tuesday and I'll see how much weight I've lost so far. Sun, 17 Mar 2013 23:40:31 EST Day 7: Reading a book SLOW, FAT TRIATHLETE I just bought SLOW, FAT TRIATHLETE by Jayne Williams.

One thing I realized years ago is that thinness and fitness do not necessarily go hand-in-hand. Plenty of normal weight people do not eat right, don't exercise enough, are stressed out and are not in good health.

Anyway, during a conversation with a neighbor about this subject, this book was recommended to me. I just started it, so it's too soon for a review, but so far, it's looking good. It's basically about a... Sat, 16 Mar 2013 00:13:28 EST Day 6: Ordered a Fitbit scale and some other stuff! Physically and mentally, I've had better days. I did not sleep well last night so I felt kinda "draggy" all day. I stayed on my food plan and got some stuff done around the house but it was like I was moving in slow motion.

Our income tax refund came so I went online and ordered a Fitbit scale, the DDP Yoga program, a yoga mat and some other odds and ends. Also made a nice dinner of grass-fed organic beef and a veggie stir fry.

Hoping for a good night's sleep tonight ... Wed, 13 Mar 2013 22:34:52 EST Day Five: Mall Walking & resolution of some issues I didn't have to care for my 20-month old grand daughter today, so it would have been a great day to take a walk while the 8-year old was at school--- except it rained cats and dogs all day--such a downpour that even an umbrella wouldn't have helped.

DH came up with the idea of a mall walk this afternoon and I jumped on that! I could only do about a mile and at the end I was dripping sweat, my heart was pounding and it was all I could do to finish. But I am glad that I did!
... Tue, 12 Mar 2013 21:20:04 EST Day Four: Oh,baby!

My 20-month old grand daughter, whom I was caring for today, decided to have one melt-down after another. Honestly, I barely made it through the day. If it were just today, I may have coped better but school was cancelled Friday because of the snow so I had both girls all day.

Then the baby spent the night here Saturday and wasn't picked up until mid-afternoon on Sunday; and was right back here at s... Mon, 11 Mar 2013 22:18:39 EST Day Three: My First Walk at the beach

Today I took my first walk----Woooo-hoooo! We took our grand daughter and our dog to the boardwalk at the West Haven beach. I was only able to do about a mile and that took me twenty minutes. But it was awesome! I arrived home exhausted, yet elated.

I had my DH take some "before" pics of me in a sports bra and pants. OMG, looking at those pics is like a slap in the face. My gut is huge! But I need... Sun, 10 Mar 2013 21:31:09 EST Day Two: Plotting My Course My long-term goal, besides the obvious weight loss, is to be able to run again. Right now, I can barely make it for a walk around the block, so my first objective is to get myself fit enough to start the Couch to 5k program and then take it from there.

My initial plan is to do a bit of light stretching every morning, walk at as brisk a pace as I can manage at least 3 days a week and do an exercise video at home on the alternate days. I provide childcare for my 20-month old grand ... Sat, 9 Mar 2013 23:38:48 EST My first post I’m a wife, mom of five grown sons (three of them triplets), and a grandma of nine. In October of 2012, we became custodians of our 8-year old grand daughter and we also provide childcare 3-4 days a week for a 20-month old grand daughter. Being unable to keep up with the kids is one of my motivations for getting fit and healthy.

I’m quite tall for a gal! I’m 6’3” with a large frame that puts on eith...
