ALDEBARANIAN's SparkPeople Blog ALDEBARANIAN's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Gold Beach In a little cabin at Gold Beach for a couple of days. Stopped at a little german sausage shop on the way down the coast, so I have some very nice food.

Just on a whim drove down a little road headed toward the beach. Found some poor guy stuck down there. His battery died. He'd been there since the day before. Seemed pretty happy to get a jump. It was nice to walk along the beach. Tue, 29 Oct 2013 02:06:23 EST After Halloween? Maybe tv fare will get better after Halloween, if they don't launch right into awful Christmas specials.

Offered to move to a different room at the motel to free mine up for another family (the place I was had an upstairs with 2 more beds). They put me in a one bed room (king). It also happens to be one of the nicest rooms they have. Still all the same amenities, but much newer, bigger, and nicer. Then at the last minute the other family canceled. Oh well.

I'm a little s... Fri, 25 Oct 2013 20:36:25 EST Blah Day The Red Sox lost.

I wish there were more cheerful tv shows on. Fri, 25 Oct 2013 01:23:12 EST On And On I guess I should be good and say something.

I left Garibaldi a few days ago. Drove up and inland to see Crater Lake. It was open, sort of. The rangers seemed a little grumpier than the ones I've gotten used to. The lake was beautiful, but over half the rim road was closed, including the campground, won't be open again til spring.

By the time I left it was a longer drive than I wanted to take to a motel, so just camped out in the National Forest.

Moved back to ... Wed, 23 Oct 2013 22:12:23 EST Garibaldi, OR Garibaldi is a small fishing town, not much to look at. Lots of boat charters.

I'm staying at The Garibaldi House. Far from the most expensive place I've seen, nicer than most of the places I've stayed. The guy who runs this place is amazing. I came in and said I was thinking of going fishing. He promptly gave me fliers for a couple of guys, invited me to free breakfast, even though I hadn't checked in yet, and recommended the best charter.

Turns out a couple of the fish... Fri, 18 Oct 2013 02:55:29 EST Ohhh, That Feels Good! This bad boy was scratching his back against the stop sign right across the road from me.

Where I'd camped the day before (see other blog) there were relatively tame buffalo that came right up to the campground. This was further down the road. He wasn't tame. Sat, 12 Oct 2013 16:46:04 EST A Photo Experiment I'll try to post a few pictures from my phone. Hope it works.

I think these first few are from The Badlands in South Dakota.

This is in Sage Creek Campground in The Badlands

<img src=" Sat, 12 Oct 2013 15:39:42 EST Why I Don't Always Know Where I Am Actually, now that my phone has caught up with my gps, my car, and the local signposts, I'm in Redmond, OR.

I've found out that I need to shut off and restart my phone and wifi hotspot to reconnect and find new satellites or something. Now I know.

How about that? 24 Thu, 10 Oct 2013 11:06:18 EST Oregon, At Last Actually, I got into Oregon two days ago. When I left Challis, I drove all the way to Ontario. Ontario, Oregon, that is. It's just over the line. And it was a beautiful drive through all the mountain passes, up and up winding roads, then down and down twisting roads.

There were a couple of construction hold-ups. They try to clean up a lot of the rock falls before another winter starts. They have those concrete barricades along the road in places, and some of them look like they've ... Wed, 9 Oct 2013 20:34:07 EST Idaho Had a real nice drive west out of Jackson. Crossed the continental divide, I think that was yesterday. Climbed up, up and over 2 high passes today, about 10,000 and 7,000 feet - a 10% grade, and a 6% grade respectively. Poor old car was doing a little panting. Glad I checked the oil and put in high test gas before I started out.

Got stopped by a roadside sign announcing the South Fork of the Snake River. Pulled in there quick as Dean Martin pulling into a bar. There's a boat launch... Sun, 6 Oct 2013 19:06:59 EST Jackson Hole, WY Wellup, I left out of Casper relatively bright and early this morning. Hoped it would be late enough that the sun would have taken the ice off the road west, and it almost had. Car behaved itself quite well.

Was thinking I'd like to drive up through the Tetons into Montana, but that road's closed. There was a whole gaggle of rangers there guarding it, and I didn't think I should try to shoot my way through.

It would have been a longer drive than I wanted to take in one d... Sat, 5 Oct 2013 22:16:54 EST Weathering The Snowstorm It occurred to me to turn on the heat in my motel room this morning. I guess it didn't cool off enough for me to think of it before. :)

Electricity went out for about an hour. Took the opportunity to go out and clear the snow off of my car - about 8 or 10 inches. Pretty heavy snow. Expect more later in the day.

Did some errands yesterday. Replaced some worn-out bluejeans, restocked some supplies. Kitchenette in motel room, fixing my own meals. Feels better than eating ou... Fri, 4 Oct 2013 14:10:29 EST Bear Lodge Spent some time camping at Bear Lodge (aka Devils Tower). I like the Indian name better. I could sit in my campsite and gaze up at it. I walked around it on a couple of different trails. I sat for hours watching people climbing on the Tower. Some even climbed it after dark using lights. Of course it's a great place to do a little star gazing too. I'd planned on two more walks, but the gov't shutdown intervened, and we all got kicked out.

Had a running joke going with one of the ran... Thu, 3 Oct 2013 02:11:43 EST Wind Cave Went through one of the Wind Cave tours yesterday. It was great, except for the couple of people who kept flash, flash, flashing their cameras.

Of course, I realize people like to record their travels with pictures, and it's good to share them with your friends. But stopping every ten steps to flash 5 pictures is ridiculous. Some people need to stop seeing life through a camera lens. What's so wrong with looking and remembering? Sometimes you just have to move a little farther awa... Sat, 28 Sep 2013 05:25:26 EST South Dakota Badlands Very interesting day today.

Got out of my motel in good time to visit the WALL DRUGSTORE for a little breakfast, then head out to drive through the Badlands National Park. Turned out it costs $15 for a pass, but it's good for 7 days. So I had a nice drive, enjoyed the shapes the erosion made. When I got to the other end I went into the visitor's center to nose around a little.

I found out you can get a year-long pass good for all national parks for just $80, and they tak... Thu, 26 Sep 2013 19:33:41 EST Ipswich, SD I'm told there's an old woman here who can make all your dreams come true.

She's known as the Ipswich Wish Witch.

Ipswich is a very nice small town. People are friendly. I was a little confused when I pulled up to the motel. It looks a lot like a health clinic, or rehab center. In fact, it used to be. The rooms are very clean and nice, but the shower's down the hall. One shower for about 4 rooms.

I bet most of you don't have a shower that nice in your home. I ... Tue, 24 Sep 2013 21:59:37 EST Short Drive Today Had a failure of my CPAP headgear yesterday. Didn't show up 'til I was going to bed. Didn't sleep very long or well. Between helpful people at the hotel, my CPAP supplier, and a local medical supply store I was able to get a replacement (thank you all). But when I found my head nodding while driving down the road I decided to call a halt and try out my new headgear.

Drive gently my friends. Mon, 23 Sep 2013 15:09:30 EST Long Day Drove a couple of hours longer than I'd intended today. Apparently a most of the few motels in this area get full of gamblers patronizing the casinos on the weekends. Oh well, life happens. Sat, 21 Sep 2013 21:44:14 EST In Paradise 323 Started the day with a kettlebell. Drove way up north to the U P. Found a nice flight of steps right by Lake Superior. Enjoying making some fruit and veggie drinks in my blender, avoiding the local fast food places.

Actually watched a little bit of a ball game on tv tonight. Haven't done that for a long time. Mon, 16 Sep 2013 23:21:12 EST Into Michigan Day started out well. Got a little messed up at the end.

Had a good, light breakfast at the motel. Drove up to Rome City for a tour of Gene Stratton Porter's house there. When I read her books I never realized just how well off they were. She and her husband were both very wealthy. She built a beautiful house there in Rome City when the Limberlost Swamp was destroyed in the early 1900's.

Left the historic site there in Rome City and headed east and north to get a taste o... Sun, 15 Sep 2013 21:15:33 EST Geneva, IN In Temple Grandin's movie about autism, she mentions doors as symbols of transition. Some psychologists have studied why we forget what we came for when we enter a room. They say the brain may "reset" itself when we go through the door, kind of like resetting your computer. Enjoyed dipping into the dressing instead of dumping. Tastes better.

Lots of Angel Tears on the windshield today. Had the wipers going off and on all day.

Was eating breakfast, a guy came in needing to jump his battery. His car was right next to mine. I almost signed out and forgot to post a blog.

I'm at a small, blue collar motel in the western PA town of Mercer. It was almost empty when I got here. The whole family that runs it came out to see who was checking in in the middle of the week.

Pretty soon the place filled up with a work crew of some kind. These are the kind of young men who drive pickups, have families of their own, and go to bed by 9:30. I pity any fool that might want to start any trouble ... Unfortunately her secretary lost track of what day it is, so now I have to wait until next Tues. to take care of that end of things.

Right now i'm sitting on my friend's porch enjoying the thunder storm. My solar panels pretty much stopped their output when the rain started, but there's plenty of power stored up to keep enjoying t... Wed, 28 Aug 2013 15:50:27 EST Another Saturday Night Light exercise today. Pleasantly tired after yesterday's efforts, but not overly sore.

I got what was probably the most important and demanding of the business chores done. Just filling out some govt. paperwork online. They made it easy to do, but it still left me mentally exhausted. Felt a little better when I woke up. Decided to move around a little to start the day.

Put on a little music, started out with a little basic dumb moving around the bedroom, walking, marching, dancing like a fat, old bear shambling around.

Felt ok, so picked up the 20# kettlebell. Swung that around a little, slow and easy like. Felt ok, so picked up the pace a little. Ended up doing old guy interval training for ab... Mon, 12 Aug 2013 22:19:35 EST A Lousy Day Don't know what the deal was today. Woke up angry and out of sorts, no energy. Felt foggy and vaguely confused most of the day. Did a few chores in the morning, slept most of the afternoon.

According to my UPS tracking number, my electrical supply equipment should be here on Monday. Should be on my way shortly after that.

First stop will be in my old stomping grounds in PA. to give some paintings to a historical society, then head west. Sat, 10 Aug 2013 23:29:31 EST Fun And Rest Been enjoying playing with the kettlebells the last couple of days, also my little walks. Found that today is a rest and rebuilding day - just a few little lifts, and some errands down in the "big town."

Expecting the Lifeline Jungle Gym to arrive tomorrow, and the Goal Zero equipment Friday or Monday.

Used the portable wifi hotspot with the computer and phone this evening. It's faster than my friend's link. Wed, 7 Aug 2013 22:30:32 EST Some Kettlebell Progress I've added a couple more exercises, halos, and figure eights, to my basic swing and clean/press moves.

I've also moved up to 10 clean and presses with both arms. It's only a 20# kettlebell so far, but with that damaged left shoulder, it's encouraging to me. The swings, figure eights, and halos especially feel good on the shoulders.

I got better quality k/b's a few days ago to be ready to move up, a 30#, and a 40#. They feel real nice in my hands, but they sure are heavy.... Mon, 5 Aug 2013 21:14:27 EST No News Geraldine Largay not even mentioned in the news anymore. :(

Found out that when I walk to the post office, around the block, and back, it's just one mile. Fri, 2 Aug 2013 22:58:44 EST No More News Drove a couple of A/T hikers back out to the trail this afternoon. There was a ranger sitting there at the crossing. Took a few minutes to talk with him. No more news about Ms Largay. It was very clear from the way he questioned the hikers that the search is now including gathering information about anyone who may have been on the trail in that area recently.

We're far enough from where she went missing, and there's a bigger road crossing between here and there, that it's thought p... Mon, 29 Jul 2013 19:30:55 EST Middle Of The Night Woke up at midnight thirty (had gone to bed about 7:30). Have been checking the recent news about a missing hiker. A woman went missing along the Appalachian Trail just a few miles up the way from here last week.

Basically, she dropped out of sight between last Monday and Tuesday. It's a busy time of year for the A/T around here, and there's a big ski slope/recreation area where she was. I've worked up there a little, and everyone I met was kind and helpful. There were over 130 peo... Mon, 29 Jul 2013 02:39:39 EST A Curious Day I set out this morning to pick up a few samples of Mountain House dehydrated camping meals to try out for my travels. Also to look for a kettlebell to have transportable fitness. That was successful, got the meals, got a 40# kettlebell.

Swung the kettlebell around a little and got more winded than I expected. Oh well, it's a new exercise. Thinking of switching back and forth between kettlebells, a TRX, and walking for travel fitness. Actually, enjoyed the kettlebell quite a lot; se... Sat, 27 Jul 2013 21:59:43 EST Some General Stuff In spite of the heat and humidity, I've been exercising just a little more the past week or so, and my weight is beginning to slowly drop again. Just a few pounds, but it's a victory for me. Been walking a little more, cutting down on the food a little, getting on the cardioglide for a few minutes when I get out of bed.

Last night was pretty tough. We lost power for about 5 hrs, and the backup power kit for my CPAP isn't here yet. It was also very hot and muggy in the house with th... Sat, 20 Jul 2013 21:58:03 EST About the computer Since I'm going on the road, I wanted a laptop, but also a very good computer that wouldn't stutter when I do more demanding things. I also wanted one that would match well with my cell phone.

What I ended up with is a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 for a cell, and a Samsung Gamer for the laptop. When I switch the laptop into turbo mode, everything goes into overdrive, and nothing I've tried yet can bog it down.

I'm having a lot of trouble dealing with the combination of Win 8, a... Tue, 9 Jul 2013 22:05:21 EST New Computer! WooHoo!

The new computer came in today. Working hard getting it set up the way I want, and learning to handle the new controls. :) Mon, 8 Jul 2013 22:41:13 EST Travel plans progress Today I completed the last of the major purchases for my travel plans.

Obviously, the most expensive was a new used car. I'll be traveling in a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan.

Next came my new computer, a Samsung laptop to go with my Samsung Note 2 phone.

Today's large purchase was a Goal Zero Yeti 1250 power pack kit to supply power to this stuff, and my CPAP, when I'm not staying indoors.

I already have a nice backpackers stove kit and Garmin gps.
... Thu, 4 Jul 2013 14:44:00 EST House Sale Finalized Closed on the sale of the house today. Sorry to admit, I dozed off in the middle of some of the paper signings - some of the ones the buyer had to do.

Picked up my new cell phone, will get the car tomorrow, and deliver my old one to a guy who needs it.

The guy I'm staying with is out of town for the weekend, so I'm house and dog and cat sitting. Besides doing a few errands, I suspect much sleeping is going to happen. Fri, 21 Jun 2013 21:18:27 EST Not Hardly Sore At All I was a little sore here and there when I woke, not much. But there it was. So I just climbed on, functionated around on it a little. No more sore. It's a gentle machine, seems good for an old fart like me.

It was his wife's. She passed away from cancer, it must be over a year ago now. Complicated grieving, hence my presence in his house for now. Cleaning, talking, hanging out.

She loved it. This evening I dug an odd looking thing out of the junk in the room I sleep in at my friend's house. Turns out it's something called a CardioFit, or CardioGlider. Anyway, I turned it around to face my computer monitor so I can functionate on it while I watch my NetFlix. I'm already sweating and panting.

Maybe I should see if I can watch "Batteries Not Included." Tue, 11 Jun 2013 21:54:32 EST Not At Home Well, I told my buyers to move in early. The water pump in the house they rent broke. I found out they've been carrying water from the stream in buckets. Three small children, one a wee babe. They're all so excited, they've been working all out for the past 3 days.

I've moved in with a friend who's needing a little help and companionship.
