I put my GPS on, but then it said the battery was low, so I took it off, and my heart rate monitor, and just headed out. I just focused on having an enjoyable run at a pace that felt good, and just running until I was done. What they say about taking the GPS and all that crap off once in a while is true. It was liberating. I had a nice run. Nothing to s... Mon, 18 Aug 2014 13:52:49 EST Lazin' on a Sunny Sunday afternoon http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5747606 DH and I went for a nice breakfast with a friend at a new place he wanted to introduce us to. It was pretty good, and there were some new breakfast choices, which was nice, although neither of us would order the dishes that we had again. Afterward we walked around Lake Merrit, about 3 miles. The sun was well out by then and it had gotten quite warm, and I really sweated it out in my jeans...

DH weighed in this morning and is down 2 pounds in the 14 days we have been on our new diet... Sun, 27 Jul 2014 15:43:41 EST Run # 222 Bad run, good workout http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5744964 Today's run was just the crappiest run I've had in a long time. In fact, it wasn't much of a run. I did far more walking. I had a nice 3 minute warm up, then about a 13 minute run. I stopped at the exercise station in the park and did some of the exercises, then walked to the next station and did a few more. Then walked back to the first one for round two...then ran to the other little park, then pretty much walked home from there. I kept telling myself I could do it...but my head just couldn... Wed, 23 Jul 2014 12:45:33 EST Run #221 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5740652 I went for a run on Monday and it was pretty good. I ran from home through the park, and broke up my run some by using the exercise stations they have in the park. For the run part I didn't push myself to try and run x number of minutes continuously, or to do I certain pace. I just focused on enjoying it. It was nice. Being out in the fresh air and in the park felt great. The gym isn't really that fun though it is convenient to have all the workout equipment and the shower in one place. And t... This past week we were on vacation at Yosemite. It was hot and my allergies were raging. They were better when I got home, but I still woke up really snarfy this morning. ( I don't think snarfy is a real word but I like it.) Considering I haven't gotten much exercise in the last week an a half and my allergies have been out of control it was a pretty decent run. I was ple... Sun, 22 Jun 2014 14:55:27 EST Run # 219 Bay to Breakers http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5700590 I crawled out of bed at 5:20, ate a bowl of cereal and headed to BART, which they claimed was starting trains at 6:00. I didn't need to be downtown until 7:15 but I was worried about getting the car parked. The BART station finally opened a few minutes after 6, and then the first train didn't arrive until 6:35, so all of us sat around in the chill morning air for half an hour. I was still in the city by 7:00. People were trickling in, but my corral was pretty empty. My start wasn't until 8:25... Thu, 22 May 2014 09:13:59 EST Run #218 Sluggy, Bay to Breakers, & a bum knee for DH http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5694982 Man this morning everything just felt like a slog! I dragged myself to the gym...I debated rowing instead of running because I just felt like such a slug, but I opted for the outdoor time since the day was beautiful an supposed to be really hot later. I came in just shy of 3 miles at 40 minutes. A little slow and a few walk breaks, but a great work out an I feel a bit more energetic now.

In other news, I signed up with DH to do Bay to Breakers this weekend. I put us in the walking ... The weather report said the wind yesterday was 3 mph but I cry foul. It was pretty chilly on my upwind leg, which I did first. But of course I warmed up and by the time I was headed back to the gym I was pretty hot and wishing it was all upwind. This run was a little faster than the last. I did turn in and under 12 minute mile, but over all still a bit slow. I waffled on whether I was going to do a short run complemented by more rowing or just run. When I felt myself ... Thu, 8 May 2014 09:25:35 EST Run #216 Two runs in a week! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5685937 Well today made two runs in a week for the first time in many months. I clocked in between 2.5-3 miles. A bit slower than I used to go, but I am trying to ramp up a bit more slowly. Averaged around 4.5 mph for the trip. I know some people walk that fast but they must have long legs 211
Anyway it is nice to be getting back into it and nice to be outside on days like this. I finally figured out how to shut my heart rate monitor up...I set it so the high alarm goes off at 200. ... Fri, 2 May 2014 17:27:43 EST Run # 215 Me and the little black skirt http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5684070 Well I finally got out for another run today, about 40 minutes, most of it running. I got a little headachey at the end so I walked the last few minutes. I was a little slower than I have been but it still felt good, and after all, I haven't been running that much. I need to start increasing the frequency of my runs for my upcoming 5K. The really nice thing was to be out on such a fantastic morning, and to get to spend 40 minutes outside. What with the time commuting and working in the office... Wed, 30 Apr 2014 13:33:20 EST Run # 214 Rockin' the running skirt! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5668243 Today I decided I really wanted to go for a run instead of rowing, and I need to get back into it because I have a 5K in June. I took my new shoes out for I think their third run, and I'm really happy with them. Also I have wanted a running skirt for ages; I don't know why because I'm not really a skirt gal...but anyway I bought one and it was dying to go for a run. I LOVE IT! It was light and comfortable and moved great and I felt so free....definitely more of these in my future. Plus it is ... Wed, 9 Apr 2014 12:51:13 EST Run #213 Chasing sanity http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5629358 It turns out Wednesdays are really stressful for both me and DH. Part of it is because we have to drop everything and bail out to music lessons at 3:30. Yesterday I worked from home, but that didn't really help any. Wednesdays are just hard. So last night I was just stressed and exhausted and I had stress to dump, but I was too tired to do anything. All I could think about was going for a run this morning. So as soon as it got light I laced up and headed out for a half hour. I managed a 10 mi... Thu, 20 Feb 2014 15:12:37 EST Run #212 Wowee... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5621732 Decided to go for a run after work today. It was tough. I was out for about 40 minutes, and ran 4 segments of 5 minutes each. Bit exhausting but I am totally exhilarated now. I'm not really disappointed because it's only my second run since August, and the last one was about a month ago. I have new shoes on order, and I'm looking forward to easing my way back into running a couple days a week. Meantime DH and I have signed up for Bay to Breakers, woo hoo! I put us in the walking corral but I'... Tue, 11 Feb 2014 20:40:50 EST Sore shoulder... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5589243 My shoulder xray didn't reveal anything. I'm not surprised. So I'm off to physical therapy, with my first appointment for evaluation on the 23rd. Meantime I went to aikido last night and although my shoulder felt a bit fragile I trained with no issues. Today I cranked the rowing machine back up and had a good row. Since nothing I do seems to change the way my shoulder feels I decided to stop babying it. I don't get the sense I am hurting it any. It is just hurting me. Activity seems to help s... Fri, 10 Jan 2014 13:07:12 EST Run # 211 First Run since August 3 2013, Woot! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5585374 Yesterday I made it back to the gym for the first time in 2014. I've done something to my shoulder (dr. appt today) so I only spent 15 minutes on the rowing machine at a lowered resistance because I didn't want to stress anything. I couldn't face the recumbent after that so I decided to try a run on the treadmill, which I've never done. I made it 25 minutes, which was longer than I expected to be able to run. I was slower than before but it went much better than I expected. It turns out to be... Tue, 7 Jan 2014 09:26:46 EST Scale and misc... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5582109 Apparently my weigh in the other day was a blooper because this morning I decided to check in with the scale and I was at 151.4 again. I know I didn't lose that much weight this week so I guess I was just retaining water that day. Can't say that isn't a bit of a relief. It seems also that now I have done something to my shoulder so I need to go get that looked at. This aging isn't for sissies.... Sat, 4 Jan 2014 17:29:26 EST Good bye 2013, Hello 2014 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5577895 I was on the fence about weighing in this morning because I knew I would be unhappy with the number. I was trying to decide whether I should get back at the diet and work out for a week and then weigh in, or whether the reality dose would be more helpful. I went with the reality dose. 154.6. I'd like to be between 145 and 150, ideally around 145 but my body seems to really like 147-148 and I think I can live with that. So back to work.

Year end at work was really horrid this year--... Wed, 1 Jan 2014 12:59:59 EST 2 months at the gym! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5550305 I just realized I've been going to the gym for about two months now. Cool! That has to be my longest running gym success already. I'm really loving the rowing machine and going to the gym is starting to feel more natural. I've been having fantasies about going for a run though. The weather has been awesome for it. I may have to try a run one of these days. I think the achilles is pretty good. Mon, 25 Nov 2013 22:50:07 EST Sleep and hunger http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5548433 Thursday night we had a wind storm and I couldn't sleep--I got about 3 hour sleep total. Friday I was ravenous. I know there is a connection but it is the first time I've really seen it in myself. My day looked something like this:

chobani mini bite (typical)
mocha mocha and two eggs (typical)
3 clemintines (typical)
3 cups coffee, chocolate chip cookie, sugar cookie with icing (very abnormal)
salad and lasagne (slightly larger than normal but not completely ou... Sat, 23 Nov 2013 12:55:59 EST Day one at the gym http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5492763 Well after a month of barely a lick of exercise while resting my achilles and doing the kitchen remodel, DH and I finally joined a gym. It was with much excitement (more than I have ever had for a gym) that Friday morning at 6:00am I headed out the door for my work out. I did 20 minutes on an elliptical and 20 minutes on a bike. I thought about doing some weights but decided since it was the hardest I had worked in a month already to give that a pass. I also want someone to go over the machin... Sun, 22 Sep 2013 12:29:57 EST Oh my aching scale... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5473557 Well, I haven't been for a run since the 5K. I've been giving my Achilles tendon a break. I've gotten in a few short walks on my lunch hour but basically have barely had a lick of exercise in a month. Then there has been the ongoing great galley remodel, nearly continuous eating out, work, etc. I am planning to join a gym but haven't had time to tour more than one yet. All that to say this morning the scale said 151.4. Not pretty. I suppose it could have been worse. I've gotten pretty good at... Mon, 2 Sep 2013 13:35:50 EST Run #210 San Leandro Summer Breeze 5K http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5444152 Yesterday morning was the Summer Breeze 5K. I had a really good run. When I was done I thought I had set a PR, but it turns out maybe not. I ran it in 36:25, which was an 11:45 pace. The day was perfect for it, overcast and cool, probably still in the high 50's so being too hot was definitely not a concern for me. I took the hydration belt with the two water bottles though, and I did drink them both. My see Jane Run for 2013 was 35:50, and in 2012 I ran that in 35:52. So it seems that SJR th... Sun, 4 Aug 2013 12:17:56 EST Run # 209 Malfunctions... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5437747 I went to go for a walk last night with my Garmin, and it locked up on me. I couldn't even get it to shut off so I could reset it. This morning it was still frozen, so I left it hoping the battery would run down and then maybe when I plugged it in it might come back to life. So I ran with just my watch. I did a shorter run, still having a little trouble getting going again. I think I need to shake up my routine. I have to admit it just hasn't been much fun lately. I'm never sorry I've gone fo... Mon, 29 Jul 2013 19:25:24 EST Run #208 Walk and sprint http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5434575 Still feeling a little sluggish but I decided I needed to bust out a little from the same old thing. On my outbound leg I walked a block then sprinted a block, etc. It went pretty well I think. Then on the way back I just focused on a nice steady pace. I guess it was good to do something different. It certainly kept me focused on my run.! Fri, 26 Jul 2013 19:37:06 EST Run #207 Give a gal a break http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5431679 Well, I was all set to be a bit hard on myself today as my run didn't seem to be going very well again...then I remembered, I lost over 2 weeks of training. Who do I think I am, wonder woman? LOL. So I just pressed on. I had some walking intervals. Then just to prove a point to myself and to make myself feel better I threw in some sprints. Overall it wasn't such a bad run in the end, still a bit slow this summer, but coming along. 224 Wed, 24 Jul 2013 10:16:34 EST Run # 206 Slow going http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5429796 Well, I don't know if today counts as a run...but I tried. I averaged 4.5 mph for my run, pretty slow for this turtle. I had a few intervals of walking, only a block or so at at time...but today I just felt winded. Anyway I got in 40 minutes of exercise and it felt good. I would have thought it would have been better than Friday, my first run in 17 days...but no, today was worse! I guess not every run can be a good one.
Mon, 22 Jul 2013 20:07:58 EST Run # 205 Of remodeling, birthdays, and running... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5426283 Today was my first run since 7/2. SEVENTEEN days! That was not in the plans. We started a kitchen remodel around July 1 that has dragged on. What with trying to get in all my work hours and finish the remodel I've been exhausted. Then my Dad turned 70 on July 12, and I flew back east to surprise him. No running there but I did get on the exercise bike twice. When I got back it was back to work and remodeling and jet lag. Last night I decided that life just had to go on hold today while I went... Fri, 19 Jul 2013 10:15:34 EST Run #204 out before it heats up http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5408893 I got out yesterday for a run at 6:30 before it got hot. It felt like I was pushing to do 3 miles when I hadn't run in a week, but I did it. A bit slower than usual but to get out running felt good. Tue, 2 Jul 2013 19:19:05 EST Run # 203 Out and about http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5398277 Wednesday I went for another run. I felt pretty sluggish but managed to turn in about 2.3 miles. My running blog seems to be running out of steam, as I am writing this on Saturday. Work has been piled on and I've really been trying to focus and not surf at work. Next Friday is month and and I am planning on taking Wednesday the 26th off, as that is my 20th wedding anniversary. It's terrible timing but I know I will not regret spending this special day with my husband instead of my co-workers.... Sat, 22 Jun 2013 12:48:37 EST Run # 202 5k http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5392181 I figured I need to start turning in more 5K runs leading up to August 3, so I did 5K today. I didn't worry so much about speed, thought I wasn't that much slower than normal, just distance. Considering I got only about 4 hours of sleep last night I think I did pretty well clocking in at 40 minutes. That counts my warm up walking. And I did walk a block here and there. But overall I'm pretty pleased. I want to do 5K at least once a week between now and the San Leandro Summer Breeze in August... Mon, 17 Jun 2013 15:03:59 EST Run #201 Hard to get going http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5389273 I had a hard time crawling out of bed this morning... and then a hard time getting out for my run. I decided to really work at going slower and not doing my max effort the whole run. I did about 2.5 miles at about 4.8 instead of 5-5.2. Made about a whopping 50 calories difference so maybe all that extra hard exertion isn't worth it. I need to start turning in a bit more mileage to get ready for the next 5K in August--need to get more 3+ mile runs going regularly. I think I will try for some ... Fri, 14 Jun 2013 16:37:41 EST Run #200 Kind of a non event.... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5389266 Well I'd like to say there was something special about run #200 on Wednesday. But really there wasn't. I was still kind of tired from the 5K. Chalked up about another 2.2 miles and called it good. But as I have said and told myself many times before, any run is better than no run. Fri, 14 Jun 2013 16:34:06 EST Run # 199 See Jane Run 5K http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5384786 I completed another 5K, but no PR. I really wanted too...but it just wasn't in the cards. I nearly tied last year but was a bit slower. Still, it was fun and good. DH got a great spot for photos and I saw him so I hammed it up a bit, and we got some nice photos. So, what were the issues?

1) the tummy bug that took me down for two weeks so I lost two weeks of training. I hadn't actually run a full 5K in a while.
2) heat. The day turned out pretty warm. Normally I run early and... Friday I took off as it was the day before See Jane Run. Not much noteworthy to report on these I guess as I forgot to blog them. Mon, 10 Jun 2013 16:10:23 EST Run # 196 On the road again! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5373502 Taking two weeks off due to a bad stomach bug this close to the See Jane Run 5k next weekend was definitely not part of my training plan, but oh well. I got out on the road today. I did about 2.3 miles at my normal pace. It was a little tough but not too bad. Felt good to be out in the cool morning air with the sunshine. Fri, 31 May 2013 10:18:03 EST Run #195 5K the slow way http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5359413 Well I did 5K today. I haven't run that far in a while and with See Jane Run coming up in two weeks I was getting a little stressed about it. So I decided today was the day, and I ran 3.1 miles. Not my greatest run. My garmin is working again and it took me 41 minutes. My average speed was around 4.8 instead of my usual 5-5.2. But I realized early in my run it was another huff and puff day, and decided not to worry about how fast I did the 3.1 miles, but just to be satisfied with completing i... Fri, 17 May 2013 14:21:30 EST Run # 194 Nothing but time http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5359408 Wed when I was ready to head out for my run I discovered my forerunner screen had blanked out and I couldn't get it back....so I put my watch on and headed out. I managed 30 minutes but it was huff and puff all the way and definitely slower. I'm guessing I did about two miles. It was not a terribly rewarding run, but I got it done and any run is better than no run. 198 Fri, 17 May 2013 14:17:49 EST Run #193 All systems go http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5355689 I had a good run in my traditional shoes this morning. About 2.6 miles. I was a little slower than normal; I was a little tired still but the weekend out of town was really refreshing, especially for DH. I didn't have any surprise aches or pains, etc. I did some sprints, and I need to get my mileage up again for See Jane Run. All in all, I think I'm back to normal. 244 Mon, 13 May 2013 22:15:03 EST Run# 192 First run in 6 days http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5351995 I went out in my traditional runners this morning and covered 2.7 miles. It's the longest I've gone in a while since I have been trying to break in my Merrells. I'm feeling pretty good. When I first started out my left heel was chafing a little, adjusting to all that shoe again I think, but after a bit of walking it all settled in. I have a little soreness in my right forefoot, but I have this periodically and I think it is actually a result of my gait that I am still working on correcting. E... Thu, 9 May 2013 17:14:53 EST Taking a few days off http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5346259 Well my Friday run was pretty good but I still have an uneasy sense that things just aren't quite right with the feet and ankles. I am not in any continuous or even intermittent pain. But I think my left ankle is slightly swollen and I don't know why. It did this once before for no apparent reason, so it may have nothing to do with the shoes. But my feet have these occasional twinges. And I find little sore spots if I feel them, but they are hard to localise or find again. And the achilles te... Sun, 5 May 2013 12:54:27 EST Run # 191 Still analyzing the feet and shoes http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5344435 Well the ankle pain seems to be mostly resolved. They are feeling pretty good so maybe it was the sitting not the running. My left ankle felt a little sore as soon as I started to put my shoe on, but in a way that made me think of chafe. So I loosened both my shoes. They were still really comfortable and they stayed on. Go figure 20 So the ankles seem pretty happy but today my forefeet felt sore after I had been running a while. It got gradually a little worse but never really bad.... It stayed stiff the first part of the run, but then seemed to feel better after. I also noticed during my run that my forefeet seemed a little sore. All day after I noticed some discomfort in both feet and ankles. I am not sure what to attribute this too. I suppose it could be some damage from the new shoes that is finally accumulating enough to notice, which would mean I've probably increased my milage to... Wed, 24 Apr 2013 23:09:41 EST Run #188 Two miles in the minimalist shoes http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5331807 Today I did two miles in my Merrills. My left calf felt a little cramped during the run but no other issues and I stretched after and everything feels fine now. Will try for another two on Wednesday. Ran in shorts this morning for the first time. Weather has been fantastic! Mon, 22 Apr 2013 13:27:07 EST Run #187 Two days in a row http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5329024 This is the first time I have run two days in a row. As I was doing it this morning it really felt like I kind of need the recovery day! My right foot hurt a little in the beginning. My left calf felt kind of tight and knotted. I settled for about two miles, and probably ran 1.2-1.5 of that. I've done better. But I am also trying to give muscles, feet, etc time to adjust to my shoes. And I think I am getting a bit faster, which is cool. I have definitely pushed a little harder the last few ru... Fri, 19 Apr 2013 19:45:38 EST Run #186 Afternoon Escape http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5328032 I missed my run yesterday. I just didn't really feel like it. I've been rather tired lately. But at the end of the day I felt like it had been a lousy day that would have been better if I had gone for a run. I vowed to get out today somehow. I decided to work in the early morning and go when I got home, and I did. It was harder because I am just not used to afternoon runs. But it was good. I did two miles, which I feel okay about. I'm trying to get my speed and cadence up a little too, so tha... I ran for 1.75 miles in my new minimalist shoes. I am continuing to build up slowly and am not having any issues so far. My left calf was a little sore during my run, but feels fine now. I have not had any particular pains or aches that I can say are due to the new shoes. So far I am really liking them. In the shower I noticed a little bruise on the outside of my left big toe. I was not aware of any chafing or pain during my run so I don't know what it is from. I noticed some calf pain that lingered through this morning. It wasn't totally unexpected. I don't know for sure that it was from running in the shoes because Tuesday night I was really stiff and I stretched, maybe a little too much. So my calves were actually hurting before the run. My... Fri, 12 Apr 2013 11:09:24 EST Run #182 A mile in my minimalist new shoes http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5316393 Well the wind is finally settling down so after I finished work I put my new Merrell pace glove minimalist shoes on and took them for a spin. I ran downwind, and timed it perfectly so that DH picked me up for the upwind leg home :-) It's still rough out there! All the experts say to take it easy at first in the shoes, so I did a mile, then talked DH into a lap around the housing complex while I cooled off. I didn't have any issue in the shoes while running or walking. (We went for a 3 mile wa... Mon, 8 Apr 2013 21:15:51 EST
