But I told myself I could do better than that, and changed I think I can like the little engine that could...and my next intervals were 10 and 12, so all things considered not so bad, but I did have to keep up a steady stream of pep talk to myself. So much is in your head! I was a little slow... I focused on just sustaining not necessarily going fast, but rather just being able to keep going. My average pace was 4.4. I managed a 10 minute interval, a 4 minute interval, and a 13 minute interval at the end, so more running than walking, hooray! Last week I managed 4 days in a row of exercise. I was hoping for 5 but Friday morning I was just wiped. Perhaps going from no exercise in months to 5 days in a row was a bit ambitious for week one, LOL. 521</em... Mon, 22 Feb 2016 12:07:59 EST Run #256 The screw it run... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6098180 Woke up at 5:30 this morning as the wind was howling, and it howled for two hours, then it stopped. I was secretly hoping it would rain by 7:300 because I didn't really want to go for a run, but told myself I shouldn't blow it this soon trying to get back on it. So I got up and went. It wasn't great, but it was ok. It just felt like a lot of work. My average speed was about 4.1 and I went out for about 30 minutes. I had fewer and shorter run intervals but probably ended up half walking and ha... Wed, 17 Feb 2016 12:51:39 EST Run #255 Staying on it http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6096457 Today's run was better. Go figure my mp3 player battery died 9 minutes in, so it was just me and the pavement and my breath, and that made it a little harder. My average speed was up from 4.2 to 4.4, and I managed some longer intervals, longest was 6-7 minutes, and I think I ran more than I walke today. Came back a nasty sweaty mess. Feeling good. Mon, 15 Feb 2016 12:28:58 EST Bad weigh in....ugh http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6095020 Well after I lost 35 pounds...starting back around 2009...I vowed that my new max weight ever would be 160. I've been hovering around 160-162 for months. This morning I weighed in at 166.2. And I got 4 days of exercise this week, having decided to start up again. And I actually ate mostly well. Oh dear oh dear oh dear. Guess I have more than one wagon to get back on. Ugh. I'm so annoyed with myself for having to do all this work again. I DON"T WANT TO! Why did I let myself get here?! Gosh dar... Sat, 13 Feb 2016 12:49:26 EST Run # 254 Stayin on the wagon http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6092650 Another run this morning, 3 miles, 43 minutes. The walking intervals were a bit longer than Monday's, but so were the running intervals so it all came out about even. Overall pace 4.2. I'm ok with this come back so far. Wed, 10 Feb 2016 11:33:48 EST Run #253 Gettin back on the wagon http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6090875 Second run since I quit work. It was not a great run as I have not been out since November. I did intervals of 2 minutes running and 1 minute walking. It's a start again anyway. Got to pay for all that down time, LOL. 20 Mon, 8 Feb 2016 11:31:18 EST Run 252 First sabbatical run http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6037740 Last Friday I finally got out for a run, the first since I quit my job and started what I am calling my sabbatical. It was not a great run, but it was not horrible considering the amount of time that has passed with no exercise in my life. I ran for three minutes than walked for two, for 40 minutes of exercise. Then I went home and did my strength training, which went surprisingly well and I was quite happy. The funny thing about going for a run is the other night we were at the gas station f... Wed, 25 Nov 2015 13:53:07 EST Run 251 Gettin' it back http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6008216 Well I got out again Monday and managed two 9 minute intervals. Pretty pleased with that. Wednesday was month end hell though, and today I was tired and the hubby had a migraine that got us up, so only one run this week in the end. But hopefully back at it Monday. Fri, 2 Oct 2015 20:48:41 EST Run 249 & 250 Workin' hard http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6004907 Well, the exercise went to heck again after August 3, and I finally got out for two runs this week, Wednesday and Friday. The time off sure didn't do me any favors. They were hard, but it was good to get back out and exercise, and I know I will improve again. I sure can't run 3 miles right now though. Actually I can't even run a full one. But I kept my speed up and averaged 4.2 on Wednesday and 4.4 on Friday. I think Friday I did more walking that running so not sure how that worked out, but... Sun, 27 Sep 2015 11:39:38 EST Run #248 Back to the work out http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5971308 I've barely gotten a lick of exercise in the last two weeks because I have been so down and exhausted I was not in the mental frame of mind. I just wanted to sit home and drink and eat cake and not care. In the back of my head I knew I did care, but I couldn't make my self do anything about it. I was beginning to think the fog would never lift. But we were away for the weekend last weekend, and it was so wonderful, and Monday I went to work in a good mood, and stayed in a good mood...and it l... Mon, 3 Aug 2015 10:08:55 EST Run #247 Nothin' but time http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5951482 I put my Garmin on the charger last night but I guess it didn't make a good connection as this morning it reported a low battery. So I went for a run with just my watch and my tunes. It was a nice morning, and cool, but as soon as I started running I realized it was really humid. Today was really a bit of a slog. One of those days where two minutes into your run you are wondering how soon you can turn around and go home, and you never really get past that. So it was a short run but I stuck to... Fri, 26 Jun 2015 20:00:09 EST Run #246 Getting acclimated http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5944094 Turned in just under 3 miles today in 37 minutes at an average speed of 4.5. The only walk breaks I took were when I was crossing the main thoroughfares in town, so I am definitely getting back in the swing again. Yay! Nice feel good run. 244 Fri, 12 Jun 2015 16:14:19 EST Run #245 Slow and steady http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5942097 Today felt like a bit of a slog but I'm still getting back into it and my average speed was a little over 4.5. I amused myself by doing circles in the park, which has several paths that essentially make a small, medium, and large loop. So I did the loops clockwise and then counterclockwise. Total distance came in at 3 miles. Tue, 9 Jun 2015 00:41:47 EST Runs 243 & 244 getting better again http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5939068 I ran last Wednesday and again this morning. I am definitely improving my speed and stamina. Today I averaged 4.5 mph for my run again, so I am acclimating again and enjoying it. It is nice to be outside and not at the gym. I am seriously thinking of dropping the gym now and putting the money back in my pocket now that I am not injured and the weather is nicer. Wed, 3 Jun 2015 12:44:16 EST Run #242 around the town http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5932614 Clocked another 45 minute run this morning. Not breaking any speed records but enjoying being outside. Had to yell at myself to go work out this morning. Could not face the gym...but outside was nice. I zig zagged through town going up one block and across the next, and so forth, til I'd been about a mile and a half, then came mostly straight back for a total of just over 3 miles. Good to blow off steam. Little tired now but feeling good. Fri, 22 May 2015 15:42:53 EST Run #241 Feeling hella good http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5932271 Skipped the gym yesterday and just got up and went for a run. 50 minutes at about 4.5 average. Haven't been for a run that long in a while. I've been faster, but I haven't been running that much lately. It felt great. No soreness yesterday or today for that matter. Sure did wear me out yesterday, but in a good way and it improved my mood greatly, which got me through a pretty crap work day. Yay! Thu, 21 May 2015 23:46:27 EST Runs 238-239-40 Outside inside outside http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5927662 Three more runs. Two outside and one inside. There really is a big difference between the treadmill and the road. Outside the scenery is much nicer and the air is fresher. On the treadmill it is easier to hold your pace, as the machine helps you. On the road it was harder because my muscles were trying to cramp a little. Also I discovered I have a definite groove when running outside, and it is very hard to go slower no matter what my legs say. But I expected to hurt afterward, and was pleasa... Wed, 13 May 2015 18:57:27 EST Run #237 Yet more treadmill http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5923315 Yesterday I did beginner speed work out 3 again. I modified it again to fit me. The difference between workout 2 and 3 is amazing. They really need a workout 2A or something. Workout two tops out at like 4 mph, and workout 3 goes to 6.2. Seriously?! So Friday I topped out at 5mph on workout 3, and Monday (yesterday) I was able to do 5.2. I was unsure I was going to finish all the time...I thought about getting off at the half way point and going to the rowing machine, but I didn't.
<BR... My blood pressure is borderline high and my weight is up 10lbs I don't want, so it is time for the crack down. Cracking down and so far feeling like I'm going nowhere...

I did two more "runs" on the treadmill, beginner speed 3 work out again. I don't really think of it as running, but I guess it is. Wed, 29 Apr 2015 22:51:09 EST Bwaaaaaa.....the blob..... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5902670 Ugh. I just topped 160 again this week....the weight I said I never wanted to go over again (still less than what I started at. It's my new "max" weight). I'm 10 pounds up from where I want to maintain, and have been for quite a while, yo yo-ing between 155-160. I work my butt off. I try and be good and make good choices and not eat to much. I nearly starved myself one week (well, ok, I ate so little I was hungry all the time and grumpy, and I lost 2.5 pounds, but I was a near raving bitch.) ... Tue, 31 Mar 2015 00:38:05 EST Run # 233 & 234 More treadmill http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5892332 I've been doing more speed work outs on the tread mill, beginner 2 or beginner three, depending on how I feel in the morning when I get there. I've been really tired and kind of stressed lately so my performance has not always been up to par I don't think, but I'm still working out anyway. Fri, 13 Mar 2015 14:42:28 EST Run 232 More treadmill speed work http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5882193 Today I went and did the third beginners speed work out again, but I modified it so it didn't wipe me out so badly. I kept my top speed a 6.0, which felt quite challenging enough. I kept the incline settings the same as the machine wanted, I just slowed it down once it started going over 6mph. It was still a great and challenging workout, without the worry of getting dizzy, or flying off the machine. When it was over I still had some of me left with which to do my strength training and stretc... Wed, 25 Feb 2015 00:18:06 EST Run #231 I meet my match on the treadmill http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5879364 So today I went for beginner speed workout number 3 on the treadmill, 25 minutes. It topped out at 6.5. I topped out at 6.2, LOL. It was tough, but I did most of it, except for having to slow the machine down some and reduce the incline some on the second interval of 6.5. That was just a bit much for me. Even 6.2 was really hard, and I think I may have been pushing a bit harder than I should have. Then although the machine said it was a 25 minute work out, it ended it at about 23:50, so I sta... So I decided to try out the treadmill, because it really does hurt less afterward on the treadmill vs road running, even though being outside is far preferable. So last Wednesday I did the beginner speed work out one. It went well and was a nice workout, but kid of easy. So today I did beginner speed work out... Wed, 18 Feb 2015 20:54:19 EST Run #228 Another two months pass http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5870333 Wow, no run since December 1! Still been going to the gym and rowing and biking. The trouble is, I'd rather run but if I don't go to the gym I don't get my physical therapy exercises in the keep my neck in shape and not painful. Right now I haven't done my exercises in about 3 weeks and I can feel myself starting to pay for that. Also, running sure is hard on the body. Recovery from a row or a bike is nearly painless. Of course, when I was running 3x a week that recovery was pretty painless ... Thu, 5 Feb 2015 22:03:30 EST Run #227 In the outdoor gym http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5825834 Today is supposed to be the only day this week with no rain, so I figured if I wanted to go for a run any time soon, it should be today. It was a fabulous morning. I left in a sweatshirt but it turned out I did not really need it. It was around my waist within a block. The run went pretty well. It was a little slow, but I was focusing on just going slow and steady since I hadn't been for a run since August. I did 5k in about 45 minutes, which didn't feel too shabby all things considered. It w... Mon, 1 Dec 2014 13:44:08 EST Wow! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5812552 Really? I haven't been for a run since August 29? Got to fix that! Monday was pretty good, Wednesday again was tougher. I had several walking intervals, not very long though. Monday I just ran city streets. Wednesday I headed for the waterfront park. It has some fitness stations that I stopped and used. One of the exercises was pretty tough on the arms and they are still a bit stiff. That's not so bad, feels like the good workout kind of pain, but it also really got t... Fri, 29 Aug 2014 10:47:06 EST Run #224 Two runs in a week http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5764363 I haven't done two runs in a week in a while. It was definitely harder and my body protested in little fits and starts about having to do the work. It's definitely easier rowing. I decided I liked the idea of running with no GPS, etc but I tried a compromise. I'm pretty disciplined so I wore my garmin but just turned it on to time my run because I didn't want to map my run afterward to see how far and fast I went. It sort of worked. I didn't really look at it, but it was very tempting because... Thu, 21 Aug 2014 15:54:40 EST Run #223 A good run http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5762174 Today I almost didn't get out of bed to work out, but then my mind started churning and I figured for my sanity I needed to hit the pavement. I put my GPS on, but then it said the battery was low, so I took it off, and my heart rate monitor, and just headed out. I just focused on having an enjoyable run at a pace that felt good, and just running until I was done. What they say about taking the GPS and all that crap off once in a while is true. It was liberating. I had a nice run. Nothing to s... It was pretty good, and there were some new breakfast choices, which was nice, although neither of us would order the dishes that we had again. Afterward we walked around Lake Merrit, about 3 miles. In fact, it wasn't much of a run. I did far more walking. I had a nice 3 minute warm up, then about a 13 minute run. I stopped at the exercise station in the park and did some of the exercises, then walked to the next station and did a few more. Then walked back to the first one for round two...then ran to the other little park, then pretty much walked home from there. I kept telling myself I could do it...but my head just couldn... Wed, 23 Jul 2014 12:45:33 EST Run #221 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5740652 I went for a run on Monday and it was pretty good. I ran from home through the park, and broke up my run some by using the exercise stations they have in the park. For the run part I didn't push myself to try and run x number of minutes continuously, or to do I certain pace. I just focused on enjoying it. It was nice. Being out in the fresh air and in the park felt great. The gym isn't really that fun though it is convenient to have all the workout equipment and the shower in one place. And t... This past week we were on vacation at Yosemite. It was hot and my allergies were raging. They were better when I got home, but I still woke up really snarfy this morning. ( I don't think snarfy is a real word but I like it.) Considering I haven't gotten much exercise in the last week an a half and my allergies have been out of control it was a pretty decent run. I was ple... Sun, 22 Jun 2014 14:55:27 EST Run # 219 Bay to Breakers http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5700590 I crawled out of bed at 5:20, ate a bowl of cereal and headed to BART, which they claimed was starting trains at 6:00. I didn't need to be downtown until 7:15 but I was worried about getting the car parked. The BART station finally opened a few minutes after 6, and then the first train didn't arrive until 6:35, so all of us sat around in the chill morning air for half an hour. I was still in the city by 7:00. People were trickling in, but my corral was pretty empty. My start wasn't until 8:25... I dragged myself to the gym...I debated rowing instead of running because I just felt like such a slug, but I opted for the outdoor time since the day was beautiful an supposed to be really hot later. I came in just shy of 3 miles at 40 minutes. A little slow and a few walk breaks, but a great work out an I feel a bit more energetic now.

In other news, I signed up with DH to do Bay to Breakers this weekend. The weather report said the wind yesterday was 3 mph but I cry foul. It was pretty chilly on my upwind leg, which I did first. But of course I warmed up and by the time I was headed back to the gym I was pretty hot and wishing it was all upwind. This run was a little faster than the last. I did turn in and under 12 minute mile, but over all still a bit slow. I waffled on whether I was going to do a short run complemented by more rowing or just run. When I felt myself ... Thu, 8 May 2014 09:25:35 EST Run #216 Two runs in a week! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5685937 Well today made two runs in a week for the first time in many months. I clocked in between 2.5-3 miles. A bit slower than I used to go, but I am trying to ramp up a bit more slowly. Averaged around 4.5 mph for the trip. I know some people walk that fast but they must have long legs 211
Anyway it is nice to be getting back into it and nice to be outside on days like this. I finally figured out how to shut my heart rate monitor up...I set it so the high alarm goes off at 200. ... Fri, 2 May 2014 17:27:43 EST Run # 215 Me and the little black skirt http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5684070 Well I finally got out for another run today, about 40 minutes, most of it running. I got a little headachey at the end so I walked the last few minutes. I was a little slower than I have been but it still felt good, and after all, I haven't been running that much. I need to start increasing the frequency of my runs for my upcoming 5K. The really nice thing was to be out on such a fantastic morning, and to get to spend 40 minutes outside. What with the time commuting and working in the office... I took my new shoes out for I think their third run, and I'm really happy with them. Also I have wanted a running skirt for ages; I don't know why because I'm not really a skirt gal...but anyway I bought one and it was dying to go for a run. I LOVE IT! Part of it is because we have to drop everything and bail out to music lessons at 3:30. Yesterday I worked from home, but that didn't really help any. Wednesdays are just hard. So last night I was just stressed and exhausted and I had stress to dump, but I was too tired to do anything. All I could think about was going for a run this morning. So as soon as it got light I laced up and headed out for a half hour. I managed a 10 mi... I was out for about 40 minutes, and ran 4 segments of 5 minutes each. Bit exhausting but I am totally exhilarated now. I'm not really disappointed because it's only my second run since August, and the last one was about a month ago. I have new shoes on order, and I'm looking forward to easing my way back into running a couple days a week. Meantime DH and I have signed up for Bay to Breakers, woo hoo! So I'm off to physical therapy, with my first appointment for evaluation on the 23rd. Meantime I went to aikido last night and although my shoulder felt a bit fragile I trained with no issues. Today I cranked the rowing machine back up and had a good row. Since nothing I do seems to change the way my shoulder feels I decided to stop babying it. I don't get the sense I am hurting it any. I've done something to my shoulder (dr. appt today) so I only spent 15 minutes on the rowing machine at a lowered resistance because I didn't want to stress anything. I couldn't face the recumbent after that so I decided to try a run on the treadmill, which I've never done. I made it 25 minutes, which was longer than I expected to be able to run. I was slower than before but it went much better than I expected. It turns out to be... Tue, 7 Jan 2014 09:26:46 EST Scale and misc... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5582109 Apparently my weigh in the other day was a blooper because this morning I decided to check in with the scale and I was at 151.4 again. I know I didn't lose that much weight this week so I guess I was just retaining water that day. Can't say that isn't a bit of a relief. It seems also that now I have done something to my shoulder so I need to go get that looked at. This aging isn't for sissies.... Sat, 4 Jan 2014 17:29:26 EST Good bye 2013, Hello 2014 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5577895 I was on the fence about weighing in this morning because I knew I would be unhappy with the number. I was trying to decide whether I should get back at the diet and work out for a week and then weigh in, or whether the reality dose would be more helpful. I went with the reality dose. 154.6. I'd like to be between 145 and 150, ideally around 145 but my body seems to really like 147-148 and I think I can live with that. So back to work.

Year end at work was really horrid this year--... Wed, 1 Jan 2014 12:59:59 EST 2 months at the gym! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5550305 I just realized I've been going to the gym for about two months now. Cool! That has to be my longest running gym success already. I'm really loving the rowing machine and going to the gym is starting to feel more natural. I've been having fantasies about going for a run though. The weather has been awesome for it. I may have to try a run one of these days. I think the achilles is pretty good. Mon, 25 Nov 2013 22:50:07 EST Sleep and hunger http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5548433 Thursday night we had a wind storm and I couldn't sleep--I got about 3 hour sleep total. Friday I was ravenous. I know there is a connection but it is the first time I've really seen it in myself. My day looked something like this:

chobani mini bite (typical)
mocha mocha and two eggs (typical)
3 clemintines (typical)
3 cups coffee, chocolate chip cookie, sugar cookie with icing (very abnormal)
salad and lasagne (slightly larger than normal but not completely ou... Sat, 23 Nov 2013 12:55:59 EST Day one at the gym http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5492763 Well after a month of barely a lick of exercise while resting my achilles and doing the kitchen remodel, DH and I finally joined a gym. It was with much excitement (more than I have ever had for a gym) that Friday morning at 6:00am I headed out the door for my work out. I did 20 minutes on an elliptical and 20 minutes on a bike. I thought about doing some weights but decided since it was the hardest I had worked in a month already to give that a pass. I also want someone to go over the machin... Sun, 22 Sep 2013 12:29:57 EST
