It was definitely harder and my body protested in little fits and starts about having to do the work. It's definitely easier rowing. I decided I liked the idea of running with no GPS, etc but I tried a compromise. I'm pretty disciplined so I wore my garmin but just turned it on to time my run because I didn't want to map my run afterward to see how far and fast I went. It sort of worked. I put my GPS on, but then it said the battery was low, so I took it off, and my heart rate monitor, and just headed out. It was pretty good, and there were some new breakfast choices, which was nice, although neither of us would order the dishes that we had again. Afterward we walked around Lake Merrit, about 3 miles. I had a nice 3 minute warm up, then about a 13 minute run. I stopped at the exercise station in the park and did some of the exercises, then walked to the next station and did a few more. The BART station finally opened a few minutes after 6, and then the first train didn't arrive until 6:35, so all of us sat around in the chill morning air for half an hour. It was pretty chilly on my upwind leg, which I did first. But of course I warmed up and by the time I was headed back to the gym I was pretty hot and wishing it was all upwind. Well today made two runs in a week for the first time in many months. I clocked in between 2.5-3 miles. A bit slower than I used to go, but I am trying to ramp up a bit more slowly. I got a little headachey at the end so I walked the last few minutes. I was a little slower than I have been but it still felt good, and after all, I haven't been running that much. So I'm off to physical therapy, with my first appointment for evaluation on the 23rd. Meantime I went to aikido last night and although my shoulder felt a bit fragile I trained with no issues. Today I cranked the rowing machine back up and had a good row. Since nothing I do seems to change the way my shoulder feels I decided to stop babying it. I don't get the sense I am hurting it any. I've done something to my shoulder (dr. appt today) so I only spent 15 minutes on the rowing machine at a lowered resistance because I didn't want to stress anything. I couldn't face the recumbent after that so I decided to try a run on the treadmill, which I've never done. I made it 25 minutes, which was longer than I expected to be able to run. Apparently my weigh in the other day was a blooper because this morning I decided to check in with the scale and I was at 151.4 again. I know I didn't lose that much weight this week so I guess I was just retaining water that day. Can't say that isn't a bit of a relief. I was trying to decide whether I should get back at the diet and work out for a week and then weigh in, or whether the reality dose would be more helpful. I went with the reality dose. 154.6. I'd like to be between 145 and 150, ideally around 145 but my body seems to really like 147-148 and I think I can live with that. Sat, 23 Nov 2013 12:55:59 EST Day one at the gym Well after a month of barely a lick of exercise while resting my achilles and doing the kitchen remodel, DH and I finally joined a gym. It was with much excitement (more than I have ever had for a gym) that Friday morning at 6:00am I headed out the door for my work out. I did 20 minutes on an elliptical and 20 minutes on a bike. I thought about doing some weights but decided since it was the hardest I had worked in a month already to give that a pass. I also want someone to go over the machin... I've gotten in a few short walks on my lunch hour but basically have barely had a lick of exercise in a month. Mon, 2 Sep 2013 13:35:50 EST Run #210 San Leandro Summer Breeze 5K Yesterday morning was the Summer Breeze 5K. I had a really good run. When I was done I thought I had set a PR, but it turns out maybe not. I ran it in 36:25, which was an 11:45 pace. The day was perfect for it, overcast and cool, probably still in the high 50's so being too hot was definitely not a concern for me. I took the hydration belt with the two water bottles though, and I did drink them both. My see Jane Run for 2013 was 35:50, and in 2012 I ran that in 35:52. So it seems that SJR th... Sun, 4 Aug 2013 12:17:56 EST Run # 209 Malfunctions... I went to go for a walk last night with my Garmin, and it locked up on me. I couldn't even get it to shut off so I could reset it. This morning it was still frozen, so I left it hoping the battery would run down and then maybe when I plugged it in it might come back to life. So I ran with just my watch. I didn't worry so much about speed, thought I wasn't that much slower than normal, just distance. Considering I got only about 4 hours of sleep last night I think I did pretty well clocking in at 40 minutes. That counts my warm up walking. And I did walk a block here and there. Mon, 17 Jun 2013 15:03:59 EST Run #201 Hard to get going I had a hard time crawling out of bed this morning... and then a hard time getting out for my run. I decided to really work at going slower and not doing my max effort the whole run. I did about 2.5 miles at about 4.8 instead of 5-5.2. Made about a whopping 50 calories difference so maybe all that extra hard exertion isn't worth it. I need to start turning in a bit more mileage to get ready for the next 5K in August--need to get more 3+ mile runs going regularly. I think I will try for some ... I managed 30 minutes but it was huff and puff all the way and definitely slower. I'm guessing I did about two miles. About 2.6 miles. I was a little slower than normal; I was a little tired still but the weekend out of town was really refreshing, especially for DH. All in all, I think I'm back to normal. <em>244</em> Mon, 13 May 2013 22:15:03 EST Run# 192 First run in 6 days I went out in my traditional runners this morning and covered 2.7 miles. It's the longest I've gone in a while since I have been trying to break in my Merrells. I'm feeling pretty good. When I first started out my left heel was chafing a little, adjusting to all that shoe again I think, but after a bit of walking it all settled in. I have a little soreness in my right forefoot, but I have this periodically and I think it is actually a result of my gait that I am still working on correcting. E... I am not in any continuous or even intermittent pain. But I think my left ankle is slightly swollen and I don't know why. It did this once before for no apparent reason, so it may have nothing to do with the shoes. But my feet have these occasional twinges. And I find little sore spots if I feel them, but they are hard to localise or find again. And the achilles te... Sun, 5 May 2013 12:54:27 EST Run # 191 Still analyzing the feet and shoes Well the ankle pain seems to be mostly resolved. They are feeling pretty good so maybe it was the sitting not the running. My left ankle felt a little sore as soon as I started to put my shoe on, but in a way that made me think of chafe. So I loosened both my shoes. They were still really comfortable and they stayed on. Go figure <em>20</em> So the ankles seem pretty happy but today my forefeet felt sore after I had been running a while. It got gradually a little worse but never really bad.... Fri, 3 May 2013 13:31:32 EST Run# 190 Feeling some foot/ankle pain Yesterday as I was putting my shoes on I noticed my left achilles seemed rather tender. It stayed stiff the first part of the run, but then seemed to feel better after. I also noticed during my run that my forefeet seemed a little sore. All day after I noticed some discomfort in both feet and ankles. I am not sure what to attribute this too. I suppose it could be some damage from the new shoes that is finally accumulating enough to notice, which would mean I've probably increased my milage to... As I was doing it this morning it really felt like I kind of need the recovery day! My right foot hurt a little in the beginning. My left calf felt kind of tight and knotted. I settled for about two miles, and probably ran 1.2-1.5 of that. I've done better. But I am also trying to give muscles, feet, etc time to adjust to my shoes.
