ADRIENALINE's SparkPeople Blog ADRIENALINE's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Today I'm exhausted Many years ago we lived in Yuma Az, wherein March they would start counting for the Century Day (which is the 100th straight Day that the temperature went over 100). I can remember when I felt I needed a sweater at night since it got down to 85.

Now I've lived in the beautiful SF Bay Area for the last 37 years and I believe my thin blood has thickened dramatically. We have had temperatures in the 90's for the last 4 days and I feel like it is getting really hard to go out for my w... Wed, 21 Jun 2017 15:06:49 EST My walk today I take a brisk walk every day during lunch M-F. I'm kind of limited where I can go but I'm lucky to have interesting choices. I often walk on the SF Bay trail and I can see lots of birds and be surrounding by the Bay on the one sides and a flood abatement lake on the other side. I typically walk on the Bay on Monday and Wednesday. Today and either Thursday or Friday I walk in the industrial park that is adjacent to my company's campus. Since I live in Silicon Valley the companies in this area... Tue, 20 Jun 2017 19:08:27 EST What a day yesterday Yesterday we went out with friends. The four of us have season tickets for the musicals that are shown in San Francisco. We initially bought them so we would be able to see Hamilton when it came around. It was awesome and very well worth getting season tickets since most of the performances are really top notch and well done. Yesterday we saw Roman Holiday. It was a musical interpretation of the movie done in 1953 starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. This time the musical had not played ... Thu, 15 Jun 2017 18:42:37 EST I love my walks Every day I try to spend about 90 minutes walking. 10 minutes in the morning walking the 3/4 of a mile walk from my car to my office. An hour to 75-minute walk at lunch time and the 3/4 mile walk back to my car. It usually adds up to about 12,000 a day. Today I walked on the Bay. I walk on the Bay trail twice a week and in the industrial park that my company is in twice a week. I have found that walking in the opposite direction usually makes it sort of like a different walk. The Bay walk is ... Thu, 8 Jun 2017 19:35:28 EST Summer 5% challenge Very soon we will be starting the Summer version of the 5% challenge. It doesn't really have much to do with losing 5% of your current weight but it is a chance to get some self-instilled accountability because you have to enter your weight loss progress every week and the number of minutes you spend on fitness every day as well as how well you do the "living a good life" activity that changes every week.

We have several teams that compete with each other to get the most fitness m... Tue, 6 Jun 2017 19:18:28 EST Best Grandma Day Today was a gorgeous day. It was hot but there was a great breeze coming from the Bay. My younger son, Jeff has a good friend whose daughter plays volleyball. Their team was selling As tickets as a fund raiser so he bought some and invited us to go see the As baseball team. It turned into a great game. We took BART up to the game and back which went very well. It was an awesome day . We had a ball and we... Sun, 4 Jun 2017 23:25:22 EST Beautiful day at our vacation house We had breakfast out as we usually do on Saturday. Then drive up to our place in the mountains. We thought we'd miss the traffic by leaving on Saturday but we were very wrong. The trip usually takes 2 1/2 hours took 4 hours. Traffic was brutal. We finally got here at 4:30. We hiked up around our house for about 90 minutes. We had a nice dinner at home. Then walked up to the intersection to get clear of the the trees and saw the most beautiful starry sky. I feel so grateful to get out of the c... Sun, 28 May 2017 02:24:51 EST My Tummy It looks like I have succumbed to diverticulitis. My poor tummy is almost always in heartburn mode. Tomorrow I start prepping for that dreaded diagnostic tool that internists use and Friday I will poked and prodded. I have spent this past year increasing the fiber rich foods in my diet. I guess I'll soon be told to limit them pretty soon. Why does it always seem that nature just won't let you just hum along? There always seems to be something to perturb the system!

I hope I can ret... Wed, 24 May 2017 14:33:23 EST Yesterday was the greatest Yesterday, my girlfriend Naomi and her husband David picked up my DH, Mike and I and we drove up to San Francisco to see Hamilton.

It was so most brilliantly staged, skillfully acted, beautifully sung and thought provoking musical I've ever seen. That is saying a lot since I grew up in Manhattan and I've seen lots of productions on Broadway. A couple of weeks ago I went to a... Thu, 18 May 2017 15:41:21 EST Slow cooker For the first time in a long time, I got it together to use my slow cooker. We had Ginger Orange Pork Roast. The recipe is from my Make it Fast, Cook it Slow cookbook. It was Pork with jerk seasoning, garlic, ginger, mandarin oranges, some leftover pineapple cubes and a pork tenderloin that I remembered to defrost the night before. We had it over brown rice with braised greens from our CSA.

I still have half of the tenderloin left. I have yoga today so my husband is planning dinner... Tue, 16 May 2017 16:17:31 EST Today has been a good spark day So far I am well with my calorie count
I had a great walk of over 10,000 steps. It was really windy but a beautiful day
I have had no negative self talk at all today
My son and grandson are on the way to my house to celebrate mother's day. Fri, 12 May 2017 19:22:19 EST Scared and grateful When I was younger I got asthma whenever I had sulfites (dried apricots, red wine etc) Before I figured it out I'd wheeze and when I took a breath it felt like I was getting less than a third of the oxygen in my breath than I usually could. It hasn't happened in a long time. Last night I dreamed that I was wheezing and when I woke up I was breathing so hard I had to consciously slow my breath down and take deep breaths. The ability to take deep solid breaths felt so great and I'm so grateful... Thu, 11 May 2017 15:18:38 EST 5/4 Not as hot today. I'm glad. Yesterday, I waited until 4:00 to do my lunchtime walk because that is when we get a good breeze coming from the Bay that cools everything off. It was still fairly warm but not like what it was at 12:00. Now that the heat has broken, I can walk whenever i want and the green hills won't turn brown so fast.

We've been suffering from CSA overload. It's been a long winter of Kale, collards, leeks and lots of leaves that I don't like the taste of. Last night... Thu, 4 May 2017 14:15:49 EST Today Wow, it's hot today. I just heard that we have 3 times the snow in the Sierras than we've had for the last 100 Years and they are afraid that when it all melts there may be flooding. We just can't win here in California. I got to get out and walk but it's so hot! At least I have yoga today so I'll be able to change my clothes. So I'm going!

Tue, 2 May 2017 16:41:15 EST Another feel good day Today we have a day in the 80's That is not a regular occurrence in this area. I was delaying going out for my walk because I didn't want to get my work clothes all sweaty. Then one of my colleagues came by and said that it was beautiful out with lovely breezes so I went. I did get a little sweaty but I'm so glad I went! Yesterday we went hiking near the Lexington reservoir. For years it has just been a bunch of cracked mud due to the drought but our unbelievably rainy season this year has tu... My daughter-in-law's folks were in town so we invited them too, making us a very lucky 13. We had Middle Eastern delicacies for appetizers. Chicken Soup with Matzo balls. Roast lamb and 5 yummy side dishes, including mashed potatoes, tons of wine and matzos and iced sorbet and coconut macaroons for dessert. As many people know 4 glasses of wine is typical at a seder. I had every one.

I cooked most of it and if you've ev... Mon, 17 Apr 2017 16:46:50 EST New healthy thing Yesterday I read in Spark that coffee shouldn't be the first thing you drink since it's a diuretic and when you wake up you really need to re-hydrate so yesterday I decided to start drinking 8 oz of water before my breakfast. As we all know water can fill you up and I a hard time finishing my usual breakfast. I really don't like a stuffed feeling but I know that a good breakfast s important so I managed.

Today I had to work from home so I had an almond butter and honey sandwich ins... Fri, 14 Apr 2017 16:21:29 EST Not so ideal Yesterday I had to go to an offsite yesterday at work.It was from 8:00-4:30 and it was pretty boring. I usually get to work after 9:00 so it was hard to get up early and sit and listen all morning. We weren't allowed to use our laptops during the presentations. I usually walk at lunchtime for 45 minutes then get back and spark for 15. Yesterday we only got 45 minutes for lunch. I had to choose between sparking and walking.
<img src=" Thu, 13 Apr 2017 15:39:42 EST The 5% challenge is almost starting Tomorrow the 5% challenge will start. Fri, 31 Mar 2017 16:36:58 EST Yesterday was a big day! Yesterday was my five-year anniversary at my goal weight. When I came home my husband was there and said he had to get more steps since he only had 5K so far. We always try to support each other. So off we went for an extended tour of our neighborhood. By the time I was done, I had over 19,000 steps and I lost 3/4 of a pound this morning. Woohoo! Sat, 25 Feb 2017 18:59:19 EST Gratitude 2/23/2017 As always I'm grateful to be alive but last night I started getting aches and pains. I had been sniffling all week but I thought it was just allergies. So I took some Nyquil last night and I feel like I could crawl back in bed and sleep for a week. I'm fighting it hard and right now I'm going to get up the energy to go out for my brisk walk. We went out to eat last night and I ordered cream of mushroom soup and eggplant parmesan and ate the whole thing. So some cardio has to be on the plan to... Thu, 23 Feb 2017 15:27:36 EST Gratitude 2/22/2017 California had been in a drought for four years. We had conserve water and we could be fined for watering our lawns on the wrong day and had to pay a premium on our water bill if we hadn't cut 2012 consumption by 35%. Now suddenly it won't stop raining. Mudslides are throwing houses into the sea. Highways have huge potholes and there is flooding in multiple parts of California. Our atmosphere moderates climates and the atmosphere is thinning due to the expansion of the greenhouse effect. <... Wed, 22 Feb 2017 16:17:02 EST Gratitude 2/18/2017 I love our infrastructure and I'm so grateful for it. California is struggling with unprecedented rains. They create mudslides, flooded roadways, and downed trees all over my neighborhood. Last night I drove home from work with traffic cones all over the place since the street I have to drive down was flooded. On the radio, the news reported a downed tree on the highway. I knew that someone was out all over putting cones down on flooded streets and that a team of folks was out diverting traff... Sat, 18 Feb 2017 15:30:38 EST Gratitude 2/17/2017 I had my annual physical this AM, I checked out pretty much okay. I have been going to the same doctor for 20 years and I really like her. I am so grateful that I found someone who really gets me. She is up on every study. I can ask any question and get a plausible answer. She always explains things to me and takes the time to really find out what ails me. Usually, it's nothing. I am an incredibly healthy 65-year-old but she is so far away from where I live and work and traffic is getting so ... Fri, 17 Feb 2017 17:07:20 EST 2/16/2017 Gratitude Once again I'm grateful for SparkPeople. I read a blog about setting goals and they talked about fitness goals being one of the best ways to lose. Set a goal to get faster, more steps, lift more, stretch more or anything that you don't do well and want to improve. It is such a good way to get healthier and such a better goal than focusing on the scale that is so capricious. Even better, when you accomplish that fitness goal you can always make it a new one that's bigger faster or longer, heav... Thu, 16 Feb 2017 15:45:38 EST 2/14/2017 Gratitude For Valentine's Day, I am intensely grateful for my husband. We hold that celebrating our love of 43 years on Valentine's Day is only for amateurs. This came about in the 70's when we went to one of our favorite restaurants for Valentine's Day and they had a mega-reduced menu and didn't have any of our favorites. Right then and there we decided to move Valentine's Day to the February weekend of our choice. This year it is Feb 18.

My husband's card this morning said to my wife who's... Tue, 14 Feb 2017 13:50:49 EST 2/13/2017 Gratitude We had the appointment with our tax guy last week and our finance guy today. I am grateful that we started our 401K savings 25 years ago and always put in the max. It was hard when we started but now that retirement is so near it was worth every penny pinched! Mon, 13 Feb 2017 17:16:54 EST 2/12/2017 Gratitude Our 5% challenge Living the good life activity this week is to slow down and enjoy our meals. My husband has always been a very fast eater and always teases me about how long it takes me to finish eating. I guess I love food and I love spending time enjoying it so when this activity came up I knew I'd have no trouble accomplishing it. When I really overeat my stomach lets me know I'm screwing up almost every time! I'm grateful that I eat slowly naturally. Sun, 12 Feb 2017 14:57:29 EST Gratitude 2/10/17 Today I volunteered in my grandsons preschool. It was so much fun I think I'll work into my schedule on a regular basis. I'm grateful to my son and grandson for giving me this opportunity. Fri, 10 Feb 2017 15:56:35 EST 2/7/2017 Gratitude I am grateful for the rain and when it stops. I got a great run in today carrying my umbrella the whole time. This morning it poured and we still need the rain in California and it's pouring right now but I'm warm and dry. I managed to find an hour during the day to get out and move. I'm grateful that I'm lucky. Tue, 7 Feb 2017 19:19:49 EST Gratitude 2/5/17 I'm grateful that it seems to be easier to keep friends when they are people that you really know then when you communicate purely online. Today I pissed a Sparkfriend off. I have a Spark trivia team that I lead. We share answers, and results and generally have a pretty low-key way of earning points by liking each daily status and posting results. At the end of the month, I award the folks who had 100% right all month and posted their results with a gold medal goody. Last month, one of the me... Sun, 5 Feb 2017 18:20:08 EST Gratitude 2/3/2017 Today I am grateful for our friends. We are going out to dinner with them and I'm glad. My creativity has left me and I was very stressed because I couldn't find any recipe that looked appealing and I really didn't know what to make for dinner. I just got an email from husband asking if I wanted to go out with Trina and Lance. It is so nice when things come together! Fri, 3 Feb 2017 19:04:35 EST Gratitude 2/2/2017 Today I'm grateful for AAUW
, my great group of women friends. AAUW is an advocacy group for women and girls. Right now I'm involved in planning for a lego group for girls called "Girl Powered Engineering Using Lego" that we're partnering with Microsoft and PlayWell TEKnologies
to put on. It will be a whole afternoon of creating motorized lego creatures, just for girls.

Growing up in New York City I went to an all girls Jr Hi... Thu, 2 Feb 2017 15:19:13 EST Gratitude 2/1 2017 Today I am abundantly grateful for great technical support. I have blogged before about the great program my company runs regarding fitness which incentivizes us to be active with health dollars that can be used to pay for insurance deductibles and copayments. Well in order to take advantage of this program, I have to have a working pedometer that syncs to the computer.

Last night my beloved Fitbit stopped syncing and nothing I did helped to get it fixed. This morning I called Fi... Tue, 31 Jan 2017 19:49:17 EST Gratitude 1/30/2017 I'm grateful for my fitbit. It gets me up to move every hour and that makes me feel more healthy! Mon, 30 Jan 2017 16:51:22 EST Gratitude 1/26/2017 We went to a birthday dinner last weekend and the host encouraged me to take home generous helpings up leftover pork and fruit salad. I also have way too many greens at home from our CSA so I sauteed some onion and garlic, added some chard and kale and continued sauteing then some fat free chicken broth to allow the vegetables to braise. I added a can of tomatoes, the leftover pork roast, a can of green chilis, a can of tomatoes and a can of cannellini beans and heated it all through. It turn... Thu, 26 Jan 2017 13:53:06 EST Gratitude 1/25/17 Once again I'm grateful for my company, Lockheed Martin. They reserved a theater yesterday and invited anyone who wanted to, to come and see "Hidden Figures" It was awesome. The only question I have is why did they wait so long to tell the story of these valiant women of color at a time when the Virginia government had its head up its butt. The story takes place at Nasa in Langley.

This movie is a must see. This was a story of a few dozen women of color who changed the course of A... Wed, 25 Jan 2017 15:59:43 EST Gratitude 1/24/17 We went to a dear friend's birthday party this weekend. It was in Fresno which is 165 miles away. To get there you have to drive over the Pacheco Pass through the mountains. For some reason when the road gets really windy and steep the sky opened up. It was a horrible storm and then it did again on our way home when I was driving. The wind buffets your car back and forth and the rain was so heavy the highway was puddling. It was scary driving and I am very grateful to have dodged any accident... Mon, 23 Jan 2017 16:50:38 EST Gratitude 1/20/2017 I'm so grateful that I love water. I gave up soda when I was 19, 46 years ago. I've had soda 3-4 times since then but I can say I have stuck to this goal because I love water. I have always preferred water over soda and juice and now that I'm in the throes of maintenance this is one of the things I am most proud.

Spark Coach wants us to identify a goal for 5 or 10 years from now. When I am 75 I'd like to be financially and healthfully fit enough to continue to travel and walk every... Fri, 20 Jan 2017 15:32:20 EST
