ADRIENALINE's SparkPeople Blog ADRIENALINE's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community My motivation is a little black disk Back in 2011, my company got into to the good health business by letting everybody have a little black pedometer and started tracking our steps on our computers. The first year my daily step average was 4,310 steps. There were days when the only time I left my chair was to go to the bathroom a few steps away. But even with this pitiful average they gave me $100 towards my health insurance deductible. I had finally accumulated enough steps for that on 12/30/2011 after my deductible had been us... Mon, 10 Nov 2014 19:17:07 EST Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its Trouble it empties today of its Strength! I should have that saying tattooed on my forehead. Yesterday I had a punctoplasty. It is a 10 minute out-patient thing where the surgeon dilates the opening in your eye that leads to your tear duct and snips a little bit to allow the opening to stretch. The worst part about it was that the local anesthetic, lidocaine, stings when it gets into your eye. It didn't even hurt when the local wore off.

But the anxiety that the anticipation caused me had me stressing so much.I couldn't sl... Thu, 2 Oct 2014 11:51:55 EST A little NSV for me Today I really feel old. I had two 70+ birthday parties to go to this weekend and for some reason that has really gotten to me. I have a goal to see my my three grandchildren (ages 6 1/2, 3 and 16 months) thru college. I don't just want to be there at their graduations. I want to be a fit, thin and with it grandma also. 209

Besides my healthy diet efforts and my increased fitness I'm trying to embrace, I know I need to keep working to make sure my mind stays sharp. To ... Tue, 30 Sep 2014 14:49:35 EST 5K today sweaty but super happy Today was the 17th annual fall classic fun run at my company. 363 This is the 4th one I have participated in. My sport is typically brisk walking. I don't like running because it's too much impact on my knees and hips so I walk as fast as I can. Most days I do about 14 minute miles and I'm proud I can walk so fast.

Today, I'm super thrilled. I was able to keep up a super rate and I managed to finish in 40:31 at a rate of 13 minutes 7 seconds per mile. This is the faste... Thu, 18 Sep 2014 16:56:43 EST Chocolate is my Fall 5% Challenge trigger I am a Chocoholic, plain & simple. Give me a nibble of chocolate 475 and there is no stopping me until the whole tray of brownies is gone.

Why oh why are there Hershey's chocolate almond bars 493 in our vending machine down the hall ?!?

Why is that school, my colleague's kid goes to, selling World's Finest chocolate bars as a fundraiser?

Why does the guy whose office is next door have to have a jar of Hershey miniatures on his desk?! ... Thu, 4 Sep 2014 16:13:40 EST Don't mean to complain For the first time in almost two years, my weight seems to be tipping up. Not much, but I ended the the Summer 5% challenge weighing more than I started with. I have to concentrate on the fact that my clothes still fit and I still feel great. But I also have to admit that the scale seems to mean more to me than it should. I have to concentrate on the fact that I am walking briskly more than I ever have before in my life and I've been able to get some running in too. I continue to go to Vinyas... Mon, 18 Aug 2014 14:15:53 EST Wow my spotlight day! I can't believe that Susan chose this day to make my Spotlight day. It happens to coincide with my 42nd wedding anniversary. My husband and I decided we can't celebrate until Thursday because we are both really busy but being in the spotlight is like a special anniversary present today for me. I love all of the people who come to visit my Sparkpage and being in the Spotlight brings the whole team here.

Woohoo. I'm a happy Teddy bear! Tue, 5 Aug 2014 15:28:25 EST I feel so secure! Today was my Weight Watcher meeting. My regular leader has been on vacation and the substitute is awesome! I have heard so many great ideas from her. The one I got today I just have to pass on!

She suggested that you choose some computer thing that you have to log into with username and password every day and set your password to a thought you have to remember. We all went around the room and suggested new passwords like:

Iamsk!nny - I am skinny
NoSw33ts - No sweets... Thu, 3 Jul 2014 17:29:44 EST Sabotage, over and over again The next 5% challenge starts this weekend so why did I do it?!? Last night was my yoga class' monthly eat dinner out evening. We went to the Rok Bistro in downtown Sunnyvale. This is NOT a place for a diet

My husband who is way more active than I am and has a huge appetite came with us this time and while the rest of my yoga buddies ordered just an entree my husband insisted on the Rok n Pot "A Three-Course option with your Entrée includes, Salad... Wed, 18 Jun 2014 14:56:32 EST Who knew we were trying to be healthy? Over 15 years ago we remodeled our kitchen. It really needed it (old appliances, avocado colored boomerang Formica and very dark cheap cabinetry). Why am I telling you about this now? Well 15 years ago I had no idea, I’d be eating a mostly, super healthy diet, being active every day and maintaining a healthy weight, but we knew we wanted to move my kitchen sink under the beautiful sunlit corner of my kitchen. The problem with that desire was that it left a huge pie-shaped area that was pretty... Mon, 9 Jun 2014 13:42:08 EST One more good bye for Dad Last night our synagogue engraved my Dad's name on our memorial wall in their beautiful memorial garden. It feels really great to have his name there since he wanted to be cremated, it's nice to have a place to go to see his name next to my Mom and sister. It was nice to have my whole family there too. I felt really supported. The only minorly bad issue is that my kids wanted to go to an old favorite Mexican restaurant and I ate way too much fattening stuff but since it was their favorite, it... Thu, 5 Jun 2014 19:02:51 EST I refuse to let the scale own me. I have been really bummed out for the last three weeks and I know why even though I'm having trouble admitting it. After over two years of maintaining a one pound range around my goal weight for some reason the scale has started to move in the wrong direction. In the last three weeks I've gained 3 pounds.

I know that doesn't sound like the end of the world but I am a person who really respects trends and I am trending upwards.

Logically, I know that this small increase ... Thu, 15 May 2014 13:58:54 EST Another spark of Joy As I've blogged before, I'm fortunate to work at a company that supports our good health. They offer cash incentives to use a pedometer and walk, walk, walk among other things. Today I went out for my usual Monday power walk-45 minutes of 15 minute miles and when I hooked my pedometer up to my work computer to log my steps I found that I topped 10 million steps and I reached level 4 which gets me the top cash incentive that my company offers. <img src=" Mon, 12 May 2014 17:26:14 EST Out from under the specter! I feel great. Today I've stayed within my calories, easily without feeling deprived. I power walked to Target 3 1/2 miles away and came back toting 15 pounds of groceries on my back.

This weekend will be an awesome Mother's day celebration as we spend the whole weekend with my gorgeous young grandchild.

I spent this week doling out all of the cash my dad designated in his will and I think I'm essentially done with being an executer.

I feel better than I have... Fri, 9 May 2014 18:40:46 EST Weekend glow! Just mailed off all of the little pieces for the Life Insurance company for my dad and it feels really good to have that out of the way. I discontinued my father's gas and electric on 4/2. I handed in the keys to his apartment on 3/31. On 4/20 I got an email that his closed account was overdrawn. So I called the bank and found out that PG & E had left the power on through 4/18 racking up a bill for almost $100 while his landlord spent my dad's security deposit to paint and put down new carpet etc. Now I have to talk ... I'm joining. They want us to do at least 10 minutes of fitness every day.

st=feel_better_and_get_fitter_by_spring
I'm pretty well past that but I'm terrible about strength training. Love the cardio hate the weights. So I'm going to do at least 10 minutes of strength training every other day for my challenge. Since I'm not into social media I'm going to blog eve... Fri, 28 Feb 2014 12:47:16 EST 2014 the year of the Cardio Walk Woohoo! I love my pedometer. I never realized how motivating it can be to keep track of your steps and watch them mount up faster. 363

My company signed up with Virgin Health Miles back in 2011 and gave every employee an opportunity to get a free pedometer. It's a pretty basic pedometer. It just counts steps and active minutes. Active minutes happen whenever you take more than 135 steps in one minute.

When I first got my pedometer I didn't really have much ... Thu, 9 Jan 2014 14:40:00 EST Could have been stressful, but wasn't I thought this would be the most stressful holiday season I've ever had with Hanukkah falling right on Thanksgiving along with my grandson's 6th birthday. For the 2nd year in a row I participated in my company's 5K race. It was an absolutely beautiful day. Perfect temperature, just the right amount of breeze. I invited one of my walking buddies to come along with me and she agreed. This meant that I wasn't going to finish too fast (last year I came in 2nd place in my age group) but we got a chance to really catch up with each other. We were able to chat most of the way and still finish in 46:47, fairly respectable 15 minute miles... Thu, 19 Sep 2013 18:50:24 EST Victory in the face of fatigue Last night I had to work really late and traffic coming home was awful. I was exhausted when I got home at 7:00. I had called my DH to tell him I'd be late in the hope that he'd make us a dinner. Instead he had taken all of the droopy vegetables from our fridge that we had collected from our CSA and dumped them on the counter. We had 2 heads of cabbage, 4 types of summer squash, some onions, a bunch of parsley. 2 bags of salad greens, some carrots, some peppers, and some tomatoes, in various... Mon, 22 Jul 2013 23:15:49 EST New way to start my day I've been thinking of new ways to add more activity to my life. I keep walking faster and longer and that has been good but I know too that it's a good thing to change things up a little. This is a challenge for me because there are so few exercisey things I like to do.

Anyhow, I was chatting with Lynn Marie, my yoga instructor and she suggested that I start my day with a couple of sun salutations. They are a series of 12 yoga positions that I already know and enjoy doing woven in... Wed, 10 Jul 2013 18:27:22 EST Maintenance is HARD!! but Sp makes it doable There is nothing like a warm California day to make you want a pint of ice cream. And oh boy this weekend I wanted it. During past summers when I was still losing I removed ice cream from my diet because I knew I had no self control once I got started.

But now I'm in maintenance mode and the weather is gorgeous. I walked over 13000 steps each day this weekend in temps in the high 70's and there seems to be a Baskin Robbins on every block. I just couldn't walk on by like I could wh... Wed, 24 Apr 2013 15:03:39 EST What is my peaceful "perfect" weight goal and WHY?? I have always been an analytical person and when I started down this road I set my sites on a weight that would put me smack in the middle of my healthy BMI range. Then my dearest SparkFriend Jonnie (JAZZEJR) suggested I go for a weight that will put me about 2-3 lbs past my goal so that I could have a buffer that would fit my life style. So that is what I aimed for. Crazy as it sounds when I reached that new goal I kept losing so now I sit about 4 lbs below Jonnie's suggested goal and I have... Mon, 1 Apr 2013 00:52:14 EST What helps the most I was asked to think about what helps me most in trying to stay healthy and I have to say that goal setting has always been my best way to make lifestyle changes. Ask for it!

What I love about this 5% challenge is the amazing willingness to offer support whenever it's needed. In any set of blog comments there is a real willingness to support and help. It is such a caring community and the Teddy Bear team is the most friendly and caring group of folks around. So far I am doing pretty well and I don't think I could ask for better motivation or support so I guess I can honestly say I'm doing fine, but if ... Thu, 7 Mar 2013 16:01:31 EST Today's assignment: How can I improve? How can I improve? Let me count the ways!

More strength building exercise
Eat more freggies
A second yoga class
More water
More iron
More fiber
Less fat

In my mind if you can't find something to improve on, you're just not trying. Wed, 6 Mar 2013 15:45:26 EST Today's answer to how I'm doing! So far so good. Smaller coffee pot bought and installed in the kitchen. My old 10 cup coffee pot is on a shelf in the utility room where I can get to it when we have guests.

Down to two cups is working great. I haven't lost any energy but I'm still pretty jittery so I guess next week when I got to one cup a day will be the test. Today I experimented with no equal just fat- free half and half and it was pretty good. I think I may lose the aspartame as well as cutting down. Tue, 5 Mar 2013 15:04:05 EST Step three of my coffee addiction challenge What are you doing to encourage yourself and keep on track?

Well yesterday's blog comments included a number of folks who think that since coffee is the #1 means for US citizens to get anti-oxidants this isn't the best choice to improve my health. In terms of anti-oxidants in beverages the stacking is:
White tea - #1
Green tea - #2
Black Tea - #3
Coffee - #4

Coffee makes the top of the list because so many US adults drink it so I still think that sw... I read about the one mile test on today's start page

_articles.asp?id=1496
and I haven't really checked my speed since last year when I was only at 19 minute miles which put me at the lower end of the fair verging to poor category.
