ADRIENALINE's SparkPeople Blog ADRIENALINE's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community My favorite part of SparkPeople I love the 5% challenges, I lost 55 lbs and have kept them off just because of these wonderful challenges The next one will be the 5% Winter Challenge and it will start in January. They are an 8-wk challenge and you post your exercise minutes and starting weight and get to do healthy activities called Living the Good Life points. I've been a member of the Teddy Bear team for a long time. The teams compete and get bonus points if they come in 1,2 or 3 for the week

2018 Winter 5% Ch... Thu, 14 Dec 2017 14:40:01 EST Today I had the first food pusher of the season Today, one of my teammates came by with a box of Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Mint pretzels. I tried to turn it down but she insisted. Then I tried only taking half of one and she pushed until I agreed to take the second half for later. Unfortunately, I couldn't resist and I ate the first half and they are much better than I thought so now polishing off the second one. Why do people do that to you? She is young, thin and quite pretty. I just don't know. I suspect that she brought them in and w... Wed, 13 Dec 2017 14:36:43 EST This season is a B*tch I had three cookie exchanges scheduled this week, a very caloric dinner for the last two nights and we are eating out tonite. None of this fits into my process and I'm competing in a Maintain Don't Gain" challenge at work. My last weigh in for the challenge (after the three cookie exchanges) was 129.4 That is 1 pound over my my last two weigh ins and 1 1/2 pound over my original weigh in. They allow for 2 pounds over the original but I'm getting awfully close plus Hanukkah is coming with the ... Thu, 7 Dec 2017 15:34:45 EST Walking is my go-to I love to walk and I don't usually ever have any trouble taking off during lunch for an hour to walk around. I know my fitbit enjoys the walk too.Today they gifted me with a trophy for 5000 miles

I only got my fitbit in 2014 so that's just 3 years for 5000 miles. I feel pretty accomplished. Now I'm off to the post office to mail off my property tax payments. Tue, 5 Dec 2017 15:06:09 EST Sunday's activities Sunday was a beautiful weather day. My DH and I walked to Costco after having breakfast of homemade whole wheat bread, almond butter and honey and our last lovely fruit salad of the season from now on it will persimmons, grapes, apples and a bunch of tropical fruits from far away.

I have a great wheeled ice chest that I got from my company quite a while ago. The walk to Costco comprise... Mon, 4 Dec 2017 20:13:34 EST Calorie Adjustment I've been using intuitive eating for some time which means for me that I might skip lunch because I'm not hungry or just grab a Kirkland nut bar at 3:00 and then go home to dinner. Because of this when I run my "Daily Nutrition Feedback Report" Sparkpeople admonishes me for going below my calorie threshold and sometimes I end up below some of the thresholds for Calcium or protein or something. So yesterday I used "Spark Premium" perks to email a coach. They agreed that my calorie threshold se... Thu, 30 Nov 2017 16:57:44 EST Challenges all over Not only are challenges a way of life on Spark. I joined a challenge at the Fitness Center here at work. They are running a Maintain Don't Gain Challenge from 11/17-1/15. You go there on 11/17 and get weighed, fat percentage BMI and Waist and Hip measurement. I typically weigh myself before I step into the shower so I got to learn what my winter clothes weigh. on Nov 17 I weighed (with a heavy sweater and jeans) 127.8 My fat percentage was 32.8 as measured by a highly inaccurate scale. My BMI... Wed, 29 Nov 2017 16:46:31 EST Monday, Monday Our trip to San Francisco on my birthday was great. The weather was amazing! We went to Alioto's for crab and sat outside. We had never heard of wharf style so we both tried it for the preparation for our crab. It was a seafood broth based garlicky, herby delight. We walked farther down the wharf to Ghiradelli. The Ice cream shop was way too crowded so we just bought a 60% cacao candy bar and walked back to the Bart station. Rode it back to our car and headed home. It was an 18,822 step Day. ... Mon, 27 Nov 2017 17:05:41 EST Today is my 66th birthday! What a great weekend. My daughter in law announced that she is pregnant, My Family had dinner for my birthday on Wednesday then we went to see the new Thor movie. Thor has always been my favorite super hero. Then we had an awesome TG dinner with the whole family. Jeff, Kelly and Emery stayed over. They cleaned up my kitchen sparkiling. Now my DH and I will take BART up to the city to have a stupendous crab dinner.

Life doesn't get better than this! Fri, 24 Nov 2017 15:47:18 EST Great week My company's fitness Center is running a Maintain Don't Gain challenge. It started last week and I go in to get weighed and measured. Lost 1/2 pound this week and got a raffle ticket. I also started strength training as my goal. Sparkpeople has some bench exercises that I can do on my daily walk MWF. I did them on Monday and Oh boy my inner thighs are killing me. Do you wait to do them again until you stop hurting?

Anyway, My son, Jeff and his wife Kelly are taking me to the Thor m... Wed, 22 Nov 2017 15:19:19 EST I've been black balled Yesterday someone posted a picture of their dog in the community feed. There were lots of comments about how cute he was. He was a bulldog or something and don't think they are particularly cute so I said I thought he was ugly.

Today someone posted this:

Everyone watch out for someone on here by the name of "ADRIENALINE". She posted on someone's picture of their dog yesterday and called them ugly. I don't think that kind of behavior should be tolerated, especially on Spa... Wed, 15 Nov 2017 14:20:03 EST Mahjongg Practise Our Mahjongg teacher asked us to observe a Mahjongg game so Lisa and I went to my friends game last night. There were 5 ladies that I knew there and they all felt that Lisa and I should try to play so Two of them (it's a four-person game) got up and had us sit down and play. I came within one tile of getting a Mahjongg but it was mostly my friends coaching not my strategy. There are about 45 combinations that will win on the 2017 card. A lot of the strategy is getting to know which games are ... Tue, 14 Nov 2017 19:51:47 EST Learn something new=Protect your brain This past Friday I had my first Mahjongg lesson. It's being taught by a private person who plays twice a week. She was a special ed teacher for many years. One of the hardest things about the game for me is to remember that it isn't Rummy or Rummio. In those games, there are four suits of 13 cards (in Rummio twice that) or tiles. in Mahjongg there are three suits of 9 tiles (times 4) and lots of other tiles. In Rummy, you can pick up a discard, in Mahjongg it is tightly scripted whether you c... Mon, 13 Nov 2017 18:26:58 EST Thursday 11/9 We had our work holiday potluck today. The company provided Turkey, gravy, stuffing and mashed potatoes. Everyone else pot lucked the rest. I brought Praline Yams. The only green stuff was salad so I filled half of my plate with it. There was also pumpkin Pie, of course, I had to have a piece. I'm stuffed since I also had my usual breakfast. Today I will walk to post office, 3 miles away to submit the paperwork for my pension that I am sooo thankful to have. I hope when I get back I'll feel l... Thu, 9 Nov 2017 15:54:51 EST Wednesday 11/8 I hope I didn't give anyone the impression that I'm too scared to be happy about retirement. I am a little apprehensive with all the concern about medical expense, taxes and the ACA but I am really looking forward to all I've planned for with AAUW, my position on the Senior Community Board of Directors and my membership in Olli.

Anyway back to Goals and challenges. Right now the 5% challenge Living the Good Life activities are Declutter your life and Eating a good breakfast. Both ... Wed, 8 Nov 2017 18:38:18 EST Retirement is on the horizon. There is no going back now Yesterday I started the process for retirement. I had a 1/2 hour phone conversation with my replacement and told our corporate service center that 1/31/2018 is the day. I'd love $20 word for something that sounds good, has been planned for, but scares me to death! If any of my literary Sparkfriends know one let me know.

Now all I have to do is collect the paperwork waiver my husband has to sign and get notarized.
Mail it to the corporate service center along with copies of our... Tue, 7 Nov 2017 15:44:36 EST Tuesday a better day It is amazing how much better you can feel when you have a good night's sleep. Anyhow, we went to see the SJ Sharks hockey team play the Toronto Maple Leafs. Last year the Sharks let their best player go, Patrick Marleau, to the Maple Leafs. Paddy, as he is called, wanted a three-year contract and the Sharks couldn't give that to him. Toronto could so off he went. They did a little ceremony before the game and Paddy got a standing ovation for like five minutes even though he is on the opposin... Tue, 31 Oct 2017 20:02:35 EST Monday Today I had Kashi Go Lean Crunch with flax and honey with Strawberries fro the farmers market. They said they were dry farmed. I'm not sure what that means but they were $3 a basket compared to $8 a basket across the way and they taste really good.I have the same bowl of cereal with either strawberries or blueberries every day at work when I get in.
It has 200 calories, 2.5 grams of monounsaturated fat and 2 grams of polyunsaturated fat with 8 grams of fiber and 9 grams of protein. Sun, 29 Oct 2017 15:24:26 EST Saturday-great day Every Saturday my husband and I go to a local breakfast resturant then I walk home from there 3.3 miles and heads off to play softball. I also then drove halfway to the supermarket and parked the car amile and ahlf from the supermarket and walked the rest of the way and then back to the car lugging my groceries in a backpack. giving me a total of 90 mintes of walking time. I had to get more fruit for our fruit salad tomorrow morning that we eat with home made bread.

This was a grea... Sat, 28 Oct 2017 20:35:36 EST Friday-I'm dragging Somedays, even though I get enough sleep, I'm still exhausted. Today is like that. My husband and I have a deal, if we haven't reached our step goal we'll walk together in the evening. My husband plays vintage softball on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. He also plays basketball on Friday. I walk every day but sometimes the system breaks down. He had a bye this Thursday so no softball.

I had no idea what I wanted to make for supper. I called home to tell my husband and he had a tho... Fri, 27 Oct 2017 15:17:43 EST Thursday = All good! Last night's dinner turned veggie. We had eggplant Parmesan. My husband said it is one of his favorite meals. We had it with a huge salad with carrots, bell peppers, cucumber, red leaf lettuce and cherry tomatoes. Everything except the cucumber came from our CSA so organic and picked locally and this week. Today for lunch I have leftovers of both the eggplant and the salad. I had strawberries with my Kashi cereal so 7 freggies is easy-peasy. I walked in my Industrial park 5 miles in 09 minut... Thu, 26 Oct 2017 15:53:56 EST New Goal My good friend GolfGMA has suggested that I use a Spark challenge for my next goal. I got a lot of good ideas from my friends here. Since I already love my 5% challenge. I'll track how I do on the two Living the Good Life things we have each week so it will rotate a little. Right now we are tracking all our food and eating up to 7 Freggies.

Right now it's only 3:30 here and so far I have had 2 servings of Strawberries in my cereal this morning, 1 serving of Thai Cabbage noodles and... Wed, 25 Oct 2017 15:37:34 EST I need new goals I suddenly realize that Candy is out of my life, I never drink coffee after breakfast and I have grown to love water so 64 ounces is nothing. I need something that has at least a little challenge to it. Gotta come up with something new. Any ideas?

Yesterday we walked the mile to the train station, took it one stop and then walked to Avaya Stadium to see the SJ Earthquakes beat the Minnesota United team so they could enter the Soccer finals for the first time since 2012. We had grea... Mon, 23 Oct 2017 17:53:40 EST Oct 19 Probably because I had such a bad night on Tuesday night I slept great last night. I feel pretty good today.

As far as goals go I was done with Coffee at 10:30 this morning
Candy was easy
Water from yesterday was over 64 ounces. Today is on track.

I heard the greatest STEM news today. Lego will make a whole set of women figures from Math and science. The sets will include Sally Ride, the first American woman in space; Mae Jemison, the first African-American wo... Thu, 19 Oct 2017 18:54:03 EST Oct 18 Back to goals All went well water, coffee and candy

It is amazing how many candy dishes there are around here but with a little mindfulness I'm able to cruise right by

Coffee done by 10:30

Water is on track 48 oz so far but I'll certainly get to 64 by the end of the day,

I fell asleep promptly last night but I woke up at 3:30 AM and just couldn't get back to sleep no matter what I did so I'm really dragging today. Maybe I'll catch a nap in the lounge later today... Wed, 18 Oct 2017 13:23:57 EST I love the 5% challenges I've been a member of the seasonal 5% challenges for years now. I believe they helped me to get to my goal weight and keep me there. Everyone tracks fitness, weight and living the good life (LTGL) points that include tracking your food, drinking water and stuff like that. There is a different one every week. They really keep you accountable. I credit my dear friend Jonnie (Jazzejr) for getting me involved.

These challenges just keep getting better and better. They have optionally s... Mon, 16 Oct 2017 17:32:46 EST Yesterday I was angry, today I'm depressed I had an ironclad commandment about speaking about political issues in public that I broke yesterday with my Sparkblog. I really appreciate that the supportive comments I got from some of my friends. I apologize if I offended you.

Yesterday, I listened to a podcast from NPR that talked about the record-breaking rainfall that Napa and Sonoma counties had this past rainy season. The rains brought weeds and brush that has sat in the hot sun all summer and has ignited so easily in thes... Fri, 13 Oct 2017 15:44:35 EST Can anyone doubt that climate change is happening? Yesterday and today the fires that are burning the California wine country have made the air quality where I live just awful. Napa and Sonoma do not get dry, 70 mile an hour winds like this. Scientists know for a fact that the raising of the ocean's water temperature has fueled the devasting hurricanes that have devastated Puerto Rico, the Carribean, Texas, and Florida. There seems to be a new American disaster every week.

We are the only Industrialized nation that isn't doing some... Thu, 12 Oct 2017 15:11:30 EST My sister Beth My sister was my best friend and nearly constant companion. We spoke nearly every day when she was alive and saw each at least once a week. She succumbed to lung cancer when she was only 54. Her 70th birthday would have been today. I wasn't thinking about her birthday until I brought up my work calendar this morning and it hit like a ton of bricks. It made me incredibly sad to see today's date probably because I wasn't prepared to see it.

I know a lot of us have lost people that w... Wed, 11 Oct 2017 19:10:48 EST Oct 10 Boy not eating sweets was easier than I thought. I'm doing great. Coffee has been easy to finish before lunchtime and I'm finding that keeping my water bottle filled is easier than I thought too. Life goes very well when you put your mind to it. I'm on a roll! Tue, 10 Oct 2017 16:55:52 EST Oct 5 and 6-Goals Oct 5

All went well water, coffee and candy

Oct 6
Slept late and had breakfast late so coffee lasted after 12:00

I decided on 12:00 since I have some trouble getting and staying asleep. The internet says that caffeine stays around 4-6 hours in your body but age can affect that. I'm going to raise my goal to 1:00 PM for caffeine and see how I sleep tonight. I'll talk about water and candy tomorrow Fri, 6 Oct 2017 16:52:58 EST Oct 4- Yesterday Yesterday was a terrific, exhausting day. We are season ticket holders for the Wednesday Matinee of San Fransisco Theater. We got up pretty early and my DH and I took a long walk around our neighborhood. I like to get dress decently for the theater so I wore clogs that have two-inch heels. I should have put on my walking shoes but my husband decided enroute that the walk should be longer than usual. By the time we got home my feet, calves and shoulders were hurting already. Our friends who we... Thu, 5 Oct 2017 17:38:07 EST Day 1 of goals Woohoo! No candy yesterday

Last cup of coffee at 10:00 AM

I'm doing great drinking water!

Life is sooo good! Tue, 3 Oct 2017 18:47:41 EST Sparkcoach wants three goals I have an awful sweet tooth. I find it hard to pass by my admin's desk within taking a Reese's mini or York peppermint patty. Sometimes it gets so bad a buy a whole candy bar on my way past the vending machine. So my first goal for this month is

*No candy

The next goal has to do with improving my sleep. I will be in bed every night by 10:30 and I will make sure that I don't have coffee after 12:00 noon.

*No coffee after 12:00 noon.

My last goal for ... Mon, 2 Oct 2017 20:06:15 EST Sparkcoach wants 3 accomplishments In keeping with small goals, I immediately thought about how I've maintained my weight between 120-130 for 5 years, mostly around 125.

Then I had to think a little and I realized that I'm doing pretty great in Spark trivia. I have a pretty consistent lifetime average of 96% correct.

I started wearing a pedometer back in 2010. When I started I often forgot to wear it and didn't think too much about exercise so my average the first year I wore it was somewhere around 450... Mon, 25 Sep 2017 15:45:54 EST Crazy thing Just about every day during lunchtime I walk either on the SF Bay trail or a figure eight through the Industrial park my company is in. I have to be pretty careful of my eyes since I have glaucoma so I make sure I wear sunglasses. Last week I lost my sunglasses so I bought another pair that I didn't really like very much but I had to have sunglasses.

Today it was on the Bay Trail.
<BR... Tue, 19 Sep 2017 19:14:11 EST Another great act. I love live music This weekend we went up to our house nestled in the beautiful Sierra Mountains. On Saturday we went to Ironstone winery to see Kenny G and George benson. Kenny G is a great performer. He play Saxaphone like it was attached to his mouth at birth.

He still plays with a guy he met in high school Robert Damper who is an awesome keyboard player.
<img src=" Wed, 13 Sep 2017 00:26:33 EST Last Night we saw a great act Last night we went out with some friends to the Mountain Winery, a concert venue near us to see one of the greatest unknown acts that I've seen in a long time, Trombone Shorty.

Almost everyone in the place was up and dancing including me. You can catch them on Youtube. I can't say enough good things about their performance. It was totally awesome! Wed, 23 Aug 2017 18:14:13 EST Best trip to Alaska ever. I am the luckiest person on the planet. I just got back from a cruise from Vancouver, Canada to Whittier, Alaska then a train trip to the town of Talkeetna, Alaska that is right across the river from the tallest mountain in North America, 20,320 ft high and then a bus trip to Denali National Park. We ended in Fairbanks and flew home from there We had awesome weather. In spots, it was even too hot. No rain at all. Denali, which we learned makes its own weather since it is so tall is usually sh... Tue, 15 Aug 2017 18:20:10 EST Packing, packing, packing I love to get dressed up when my DH and I go out and we both love to cruise and especially love the formal nights but packing for these things really gets me down. We are flying on three different airlines. They have different baggage fees. One charges 35 dollars for every bag you stow. Another gives you the first bag free and charges $200 for the 2nd. Carry-on dimensions are different. One airlines has 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches. Another has 7 inches x 15 inches x 21 inches so that mea... Thu, 27 Jul 2017 15:12:23 EST Great Camping weekend Just about every year my oldest son plans a camping trip for us. Sometimes it's with his wife's family too. This year it was just us, My son his wife and two kids, My Brother in law and nephew. My younger son couldn't come because his son came down with a virus on Thursday. Still, there was eight of us in two sites in Bodega Bay which is a little beach town about 2 hours up the coast from where we live. We each provided a meal for everyone and each cleaned up after someone else's meal. We spe... Mon, 17 Jul 2017 20:25:14 EST Today is an awesome day! Today I had my every 90-day checkup at our medical office. They check my cholesterol which was well into the healthy range at 168 down from the 203 in January. My blood pressure was quite low at 96/60 and they do a Tanita scale that checks your body fat and I was in the green zone for all 6 measurements that it takes. I feel super healthy!

I got the sad news that my favorite nurse and good friend put her house on the market yesterday and when it sells she is leaving my company and... Wed, 12 Jul 2017 19:23:24 EST Yesterday I really blew it but I'm back on track today There is something about summer, long weekends and great food that makes me lose resolve and completely overdo. Our weather has been awesome, I had last Friday, Monday, and Tuesday off from work and of course, we HAD to have the great American Barbeque yesterday to celebrate the fourth. We always have ribs on the fourth. I have an old recipe that has us marinate the ribs in onion and pickling spices and a little water. Simmering them on the stove and then throwing them on the grill with KC Ma... Wed, 5 Jul 2017 14:47:59 EST Today I've just got the slows So far I only have 4000 steps today. I had lunch with my son which was nice at Oren's hummus. It was quite good but pretty fatttening. Today may be a problem. Fri, 30 Jun 2017 19:04:00 EST Maybe I'm just jealous The prevailing comment around here is that Tech companies create arrogant employees. My aerospace company is surrounded by Yahoo, Google, Amazon, Go-Daddy, Net App, HP, and a few you probably haven't heard of. It seems like all of these employees have their head buried in their phone even when they are crossing the street with no regard for the line of cars that is backed up waiting for them to cross the street.

Their cafeterias have no cash registers because their meals are free. ... Mon, 26 Jun 2017 19:15:09 EST Today I'm exhausted Many years ago we lived in Yuma Az, wherein March they would start counting for the Century Day (which is the 100th straight Day that the temperature went over 100). I can remember when I felt I needed a sweater at night since it got down to 85.

Now I've lived in the beautiful SF Bay Area for the last 37 years and I believe my thin blood has thickened dramatically. We have had temperatures in the 90's for the last 4 days and I feel like it is getting really hard to go out for my w... Wed, 21 Jun 2017 15:06:49 EST My walk today I take a brisk walk every day during lunch M-F. I'm kind of limited where I can go but I'm lucky to have interesting choices. I often walk on the SF Bay trail and I can see lots of birds and be surrounding by the Bay on the one sides and a flood abatement lake on the other side. I typically walk on the Bay on Monday and Wednesday. Today and either Thursday or Friday I walk in the industrial park that is adjacent to my company's campus. Since I live in Silicon Valley the companies in this area... Tue, 20 Jun 2017 19:08:27 EST What a day yesterday Yesterday we went out with friends. The four of us have season tickets for the musicals that are shown in San Francisco. We initially bought them so we would be able to see Hamilton when it came around. It was awesome and very well worth getting season tickets since most of the performances are really top notch and well done. Yesterday we saw Roman Holiday. It was a musical interpretation of the movie done in 1953 starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. This time the musical had not played ... Thu, 15 Jun 2017 18:42:37 EST I love my walks Every day I try to spend about 90 minutes walking. 10 minutes in the morning walking the 3/4 of a mile walk from my car to my office. An hour to 75-minute walk at lunch time and the 3/4 mile walk back to my car. It usually adds up to about 12,000 a day. Today I walked on the Bay. I walk on the Bay trail twice a week and in the industrial park that my company is in twice a week. I have found that walking in the opposite direction usually makes it sort of like a different walk. The Bay walk is ... Thu, 8 Jun 2017 19:35:28 EST
