ADRIENALINE's SparkPeople Blog ADRIENALINE's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Gratitude 2/18/2017 I love our infrastructure and I'm so grateful for it. California is struggling with unprecedented rains. They create mudslides, flooded roadways, and downed trees all over my neighborhood. Last night I drove home from work with traffic cones all over the place since the street I have to drive down was flooded. On the radio, the news reported a downed tree on the highway. I knew that someone was out all over putting cones down on flooded streets and that a team of folks was out diverting traff... Sat, 18 Feb 2017 15:30:38 EST Gratitude 2/17/2017 I had my annual physical this AM, I checked out pretty much okay. I have been going to the same doctor for 20 years and I really like her. I am so grateful that I found someone who really gets me. She is up on every study. I can ask any question and get a plausible answer. She always explains things to me and takes the time to really find out what ails me. Usually, it's nothing. I am an incredibly healthy 65-year-old but she is so far away from where I live and work and traffic is getting so ... Fri, 17 Feb 2017 17:07:20 EST 2/16/2017 Gratitude Once again I'm grateful for SparkPeople. I read a blog about setting goals and they talked about fitness goals being one of the best ways to lose. Set a goal to get faster, more steps, lift more, stretch more or anything that you don't do well and want to improve. It is such a good way to get healthier and such a better goal than focusing on the scale that is so capricious. Even better, when you accomplish that fitness goal you can always make it a new one that's bigger faster or longer, heav... Thu, 16 Feb 2017 15:45:38 EST 2/14/2017 Gratitude For Valentine's Day, I am intensely grateful for my husband. We hold that celebrating our love of 43 years on Valentine's Day is only for amateurs. This came about in the 70's when we went to one of our favorite restaurants for Valentine's Day and they had a mega-reduced menu and didn't have any of our favorites. Right then and there we decided to move Valentine's Day to the February weekend of our choice. This year it is Feb 18.

My husband's card this morning said to my wife who's... Tue, 14 Feb 2017 13:50:49 EST 2/13/2017 Gratitude We had the appointment with our tax guy last week and our finance guy today. I am grateful that we started our 401K savings 25 years ago and always put in the max. It was hard when we started but now that retirement is so near it was worth every penny pinched! Mon, 13 Feb 2017 17:16:54 EST 2/12/2017 Gratitude Our 5% challenge Living the good life activity this week is to slow down and enjoy our meals. My husband has always been a very fast eater and always teases me about how long it takes me to finish eating. I guess I love food and I love spending time enjoying it so when this activity came up I knew I'd have no trouble accomplishing it. When I really overeat my stomach lets me know I'm screwing up almost every time! I'm grateful that I eat slowly naturally. Sun, 12 Feb 2017 14:57:29 EST Gratitude 2/10/17 Today I volunteered in my grandsons preschool. It was so much fun I think I'll work into my schedule on a regular basis. I'm grateful to my son and grandson for giving me this opportunity. Fri, 10 Feb 2017 15:56:35 EST 2/7/2017 Gratitude I am grateful for the rain and when it stops. I got a great run in today carrying my umbrella the whole time. This morning it poured and we still need the rain in California and it's pouring right now but I'm warm and dry. I managed to find an hour during the day to get out and move. I'm grateful that I'm lucky. Tue, 7 Feb 2017 19:19:49 EST Gratitude 2/5/17 I'm grateful that it seems to be easier to keep friends when they are people that you really know then when you communicate purely online. Today I pissed a Sparkfriend off. I have a Spark trivia team that I lead. We share answers, and results and generally have a pretty low-key way of earning points by liking each daily status and posting results. At the end of the month, I award the folks who had 100% right all month and posted their results with a gold medal goody. Last month, one of the me... Sun, 5 Feb 2017 18:20:08 EST Gratitude 2/3/2017 Today I am grateful for our friends. We are going out to dinner with them and I'm glad. My creativity has left me and I was very stressed because I couldn't find any recipe that looked appealing and I really didn't know what to make for dinner. I just got an email from husband asking if I wanted to go out with Trina and Lance. It is so nice when things come together! Fri, 3 Feb 2017 19:04:35 EST Gratitude 2/2/2017 Today I'm grateful for AAUW
, my great group of women friends. AAUW is an advocacy group for women and girls. Right now I'm involved in planning for a lego group for girls called "Girl Powered Engineering Using Lego" that we're partnering with Microsoft and PlayWell TEKnologies
to put on. It will be a whole afternoon of creating motorized lego creatures, just for girls.

Growing up in New York City I went to an all girls Jr Hi... Thu, 2 Feb 2017 15:19:13 EST Gratitude 2/1 2017 Today I am abundantly grateful for great technical support. I have blogged before about the great program my company runs regarding fitness which incentivizes us to be active with health dollars that can be used to pay for insurance deductibles and copayments. Well in order to take advantage of this program, I have to have a working pedometer that syncs to the computer.

Last night my beloved Fitbit stopped syncing and nothing I did helped to get it fixed. This morning I called Fi... Tue, 31 Jan 2017 19:49:17 EST Gratitude 1/30/2017 I'm grateful for my fitbit. It gets me up to move every hour and that makes me feel more healthy! Mon, 30 Jan 2017 16:51:22 EST Gratitude 1/26/2017 We went to a birthday dinner last weekend and the host encouraged me to take home generous helpings up leftover pork and fruit salad. I also have way too many greens at home from our CSA so I sauteed some onion and garlic, added some chard and kale and continued sauteing then some fat free chicken broth to allow the vegetables to braise. I added a can of tomatoes, the leftover pork roast, a can of green chilis, a can of tomatoes and a can of cannellini beans and heated it all through. It turn... Thu, 26 Jan 2017 13:53:06 EST Gratitude 1/25/17 Once again I'm grateful for my company, Lockheed Martin. They reserved a theater yesterday and invited anyone who wanted to, to come and see "Hidden Figures" It was awesome. The only question I have is why did they wait so long to tell the story of these valiant women of color at a time when the Virginia government had its head up its butt. The story takes place at Nasa in Langley.

This movie is a must see. This was a story of a few dozen women of color who changed the course of A... Wed, 25 Jan 2017 15:59:43 EST Gratitude 1/24/17 We went to a dear friend's birthday party this weekend. It was in Fresno which is 165 miles away. To get there you have to drive over the Pacheco Pass through the mountains. For some reason when the road gets really windy and steep the sky opened up. It was a horrible storm and then it did again on our way home when I was driving. The wind buffets your car back and forth and the rain was so heavy the highway was puddling. It was scary driving and I am very grateful to have dodged any accident... Mon, 23 Jan 2017 16:50:38 EST Gratitude 1/20/2017 I'm so grateful that I love water. I gave up soda when I was 19, 46 years ago. I've had soda 3-4 times since then but I can say I have stuck to this goal because I love water. I have always preferred water over soda and juice and now that I'm in the throes of maintenance this is one of the things I am most proud.

Spark Coach wants us to identify a goal for 5 or 10 years from now. When I am 75 I'd like to be financially and healthfully fit enough to continue to travel and walk every... Fri, 20 Jan 2017 15:32:20 EST Back to gratitude 1/19/2017 I am grateful that I love to walk. I feel awful if I can't get in 10,000 steps a day. This morning was a trial though. I typically park about a 3/4 mile from my building. Today was no exception. The forecast called for rain but it was pretty clear when I got out of my car to get to my building. Suddenly the sky opened up and it poured. Then it hailed. My parking lot turned into a river. My sneakers and pants got drenched.

I'm so glad that I keep a backup pair of shoes at the offic... I fall asleep okay but I always wake up at least once every night and sometimes I can't fall back to sleep no matter how many tips I try from chamomile tea to melatonin. Nothing works! Well last night I had a great night's sleep and it changes my whole demeanor. I am so grateful when that happens. Fri, 6 Jan 2017 19:48:28 EST Gratitude 1/5/2017 Today is sunny and I'm grateful for that too. I get to walk on the beautiful SF Bay today and we expect to get another drenching tomorrow and I'm grateful for that too. Thu, 5 Jan 2017 15:38:58 EST Gratitude for 1/4/2017 I am grateful that we are getting some rain. I'm also grateful for my NPR podcasts that make using a treadmill almost as much fun as walking outside. Wed, 4 Jan 2017 15:17:51 EST Gratitude for 1/3/2017 I'm so grateful I have a fitness center at work and that it's free. It's raining today and a walk will be difficult. Tue, 3 Jan 2017 16:50:46 EST Gratitude 1/2/17 I am grateful for my sight! We were up at our cabin in the sierras with the family, about to celebrate the 7th night of Chanukkah when my left eye developed a spider web pattern in front of it. Our place is over 50 minutes from the closest medical facility. I had this problem a while ago and it is a symptom of a torn retna. I know that speed is important to treatment so we left the family to celebrate on their own and hopped in the car to Sonora
<img src=" Mon, 2 Jan 2017 18:33:34 EST Gratitude for Day 4 Hobee's is a local chain that serves fabulous breakfasts. Mon, 26 Dec 2016 19:43:04 EST Gratitude for today 1 Today I read an article about the benefits of positivity. I try to be positive most of the time but I'm seen too much anger at frustration creeping into my days. I didn't know that gratitude was part of positivity so I'm going to try this by blogging.

I am grateful for my huusband of 43 years! Sun, 25 Dec 2016 15:12:14 EST Dec 23 I'm happy to say this has been a pretty easy Christmas season for me. There have been several people who don't assume that I celebrate Christmas and have said either Happy Hanukkah or Happy holiday instead. I really appreciate that and I'm thrilled to live in a place where people really seem to care about each other's feelings. The news that I hear about people insulting or attacking that wear a hijab makes me profoundly sad and afraid for what this country seems to be becoming, but at least ... Fri, 23 Dec 2016 18:39:43 EST Friday Yesterday it poured. I still managed to take my brisk walk. Even though I got pretty soaked. I went to my book group and we each brought lyrics to two Bib Dylan songs and discussed his poetry, activism and life. it was pretty good. He is an awesome story teller, poet and smart guy. We had a pot luck too. More over eating. I'll be happy when this month is over. We also had a gift exchange. I brought an atomic lantern that we had gotten a while ago and never used. It got stolen three times. Dri... Fri, 16 Dec 2016 14:09:32 EST Today it's raining! Dinner last night was delicious. The restaurant was picked by the couple we went with and serves Singapore (Malaysian food) Boy I love Roti and peanut sauce and all of those mango dishes. I have no idea how many calories but it was delicious and this morning I was only up 1/10 of a pound.

Now I'm going to bundle up and walk in the rain! While I keep telling myself, it's only water. Thu, 15 Dec 2016 16:18:25 EST Happy Wednesday Yesterday, I went to the meeting of the Board for our local senior community. My parents lived there for almost thirty years after they moved closer to me from New York. I have been on the board there since my rabbi asked me to serve 6 years ago. I've seen many ups and downs and I'm proud of the residence we provide to local folks who live on a fixed income in our crazy real estate market. It is a warm and welcoming community and the board has managed to make a number improvements. Last night... Wed, 14 Dec 2016 17:27:19 EST Hurray its Friday Yesterday we went to an annual Christmas party at an Italian restaurant. I had Shrimp Scampi since it came with roasted vegetables and I love Shrimp Scampi, one glass of wine and split chocolate cake with 6 people. This restaurant does post nutritional facts. I picked Shrimp Scampi from Red Lobster when tracking and it came up with just 236 calories. I'm sure there were more calories in my portion but this was the best I could do. We had a great time and when we got home we walked around the... Fri, 9 Dec 2016 15:25:58 EST Latest status Yesterday we went to the King and I in San Francisco. It was a great production and very enjoyable. We went to BJ's for dinner. I picked well out of the low-calorie menu and only ate half of my grilled Ahi Salad but we ordered one of their cookie and ice cream things and I ate my share. I was stuffed when dessert plates were taken away but it was so good! The other couple we went with insisted on parking very close to the theater. My husband and I took a long walk around the neighborhood when... Thu, 8 Dec 2016 15:59:23 EST Typical December Crazies The City Council meeting we went to sounds great. We will get a new theater and an organic market plus a very nice pedestrian lane and some more townhomes. I'm pretty happy with the plans. We went to the library also and found the DVD Laura an old noir detective story that was created from the book my mystery book group read this month. People in the group said the movie was better but I'm enjoying the book. The movie had a baby Vincent Price, Gene Turney and Dana Andrews it was fun to watch.... It had been raining all day and I thought it had stopped but there was still a drizzle. I decided to power thru it and walk on the Bay which is a little risky because there is no shelter and not too any exits to shelter but positive thinking wills out. The rain cleared and the bird population was out in droves. There were ducks, geese and cranes. ... Well, this long weekend has been crazy busy. I haven't maintained my step goals or my eating and tracking goals but as we know life upsets the apple cart so I can start fresh and pick up where I left off back on Wednesday. I did take two long brisk walks yesterday, which shows I'm getting back together even though we've been trying to get the fridge emptied of leftovers so low calorie hasn't been the priority. I understand that sometimes it just can't be.

Some days it's just nice t... Mon, 28 Nov 2016 16:06:20 EST Tomorrow's my birthday. I don't feel old! 7 + 2 - Tomorrow is my birthday. I'll be 65. This feels like an enormous milestone but I have a plan. I know exactly what a healthy diet is and I'm going to continue to embrace it for the rest of my life. I have made 21,953,620 steps since 2011 and I truly believe that if I take a brisk walk every day and do my planks, squats, and curls every day, then I'll be able to keep doing them until I leave this earth. I got an email from Marie Callendars that they had a free piece of pie waiting for me, so on Friday we went out to eat there. My favorite dish for dinner is Chicken Pie. The mini version of it is 1,736 calories so with great willpower I skipped it and got the Salmon dinner which 607 calories and had pumpkin pie for my free dessert and shared it with my husband and no whipped cream.
