This move has been tougher than I thought and the proof is in the weight gain. It could have been worse, but it's still a little defeating to realize that what one maintains for several years is gone in several months. Sigh. To make it a little worse, I keep gaining and losing what seems like the same two pounds. It's a circle... lose it, gain it, lose it, gain it. Overall, I'm down about 2 pounds. Not much, but I'll take it.

When I ... Sun, 3 May 2015 17:00:38 EST Questions - response Another SP'er posted these questions a little while ago and I thought I'd take up the challenge. So, here goes.

Do you like dogs or cats?
I like both, but have a cat. I love on other people's dogs whenever the opportunity presents itself and miss walking a friends dog, but we now live several states apart. My cat is my first and we'll soon celebrate 15 years together.

Do you read mysteries or romance?
Mostly mysteries, but some Chick Lit, which can be c... Sun, 8 Mar 2015 20:55:00 EST It's a new year! I'm back! Well, I've been here, but doing one day at at a time. I'm trying to start the new year off right - tracking food, exercising, and hopefully eating better.

One of my goals is more fruit. Last week was a success - right at three fruits a day. I forget how much I like fruit because I just don't eat it. I know that sounds weird, but there it is. Now, I'm taking it to work and that what's available. Turns out making it easier is a good trick. One of my favorites is fre... Sat, 24 Jan 2015 21:07:20 EST It's been a while... Yes, I'm still here, though my Sparking has been erratic at best. I can't believe it's been over a year since I blogged. A lot has changed.

I made peace with my Georgia town and work did get better. I hired some great people, some also turned out to be friends. That's good. However, interview after interview for a manager failed (not by those of us in the department, but by higher ups). I still have no idea what they were looking for or if they even know what they were lookin... Sat, 13 Sep 2014 21:59:12 EST Getting back to cooking... It's been ages since I checked in. Things are going well. I'm trying to get more time in the evening, which means my computer time in general in curtailed. In fact, I consider it a victory of sorts when I don't fire up the computer in the evening. I'm still trying to get my exercise groove back -- I have good weeks and bad weeks. I recently failed a "stress test" of sorts at my doctor's office and I didn't realize I was stressed. That's given me a little more motivation for at least a 30... Sat, 27 Jul 2013 22:10:50 EST Ooops... Well, it's not like I didn't see this coming, but seeing it on the scale is a little depressing. Yes, I've gained weight. Since November, when I'd gained a bit. It could be worse, but I know I'm on a path to just keep gaining weight and well, after successfully keeping 25 pounds off for almost 3 years, I'm not willing to just slide back to where I was.

It's almost like starting over, but I'm going to have to use all the Spark tools I can. I know part of this is that the for t... Sun, 31 Mar 2013 16:43:10 EST Laid low... I know I've kind of dropped off the radar, but hopefully I'll be back soon.

The move went well, but was harder than I thought it would be. While I love the peace of this place, the limited closets and storage have proved to be challenging. Adding to all of this, I'm not quite done. Super positive though is Kitty has done no hiding whatsoever in this new place.

The day my Mom left, I worked a full day (on a Sunday) and then took that Monday off. Well, that Sunday ... Sat, 16 Mar 2013 18:05:32 EST Moving... I have been sporadic here on SP lately and I miss it. I have a good reason though -- next Sunday I'm moving. About six miles up the road. Still that entails packing, which is just something I hate to do. Almost with a passion. It's weird. One can be totally psyched about a new place, but still the thought of what is involved in getting there is a little daunting. This weekend, I'm starting the packing process, but expect that I'll be pushing it up till the last minute. The saving grace... Sat, 16 Feb 2013 21:32:42 EST Year in Review... 2012 Tomorrow we'll welcome 2013. This has made me a bit reflective. It's been quite a year for me, both good and bad.

The good -- I accepted what has turned out to be a good job opportunity. I attended not one, but two, very good professional conferences, one in Austin, one in Anaheim (which made me a bit nostalgic for the days I lived in central CA). I got to make one more trip make to tiny town in Illinois, and stay one last time in my father's childhood home, before we sold it. ... Mon, 31 Dec 2012 19:57:36 EST Figuring things out... It's been a while and Thanksgiving is almost here. I've decided not to move. A variety of reasons, but I just didn't want to give up the open floor plan as it's just me, I didn't want to take trash to a dumpster at the end of the street, and I wasn't sure what to do with no outside storage. There was another one that had all of those things, but in the end I just couldn't gear up to move again. I also did the math and in the end, with the purchase of a fridge and moving, I would actually n... Sun, 18 Nov 2012 19:03:08 EST Decisions... It seems hard to believe, but I've been at my new job for six months. For the most part, it's going okay. I'm finding that I enjoy the management aspect, though it does have it's downside. But, that's part of working and life.

The decision though has to do with my apartment. There are things that I like and things that I don't. For the most part, the space is okay. I'm very used to living in a smaller space and kind of like it. However, I'm not liking the carpet or the split... Sat, 13 Oct 2012 22:58:01 EST My baking drought is over... I haven't baked since I moved back in April. Which is sad, because not only do I enjoy the results of my labor, I enjoy the process of baking as well. However, it's always hard to get used to a new kitchen and new appliances and really get a cooking/baking groove in any new place. My Mom figures it's because in the beginning, it's not "my" kitchen.

But, things happen and in my case I baked out of a little bit of desperation. I'm having a lot of stomach problems as well as a r... Sun, 7 Oct 2012 14:48:21 EST Recharging the batteries... I got back on Sunday from my last trip to tiny village in Southern IL. I added a day to the trip (using all but one of my vacation days), but it was worth it.

The picture here is an interesting tree as viewed from the porch of the house I stayed at -- the house where my Dad was born and raised. We figure it's been in the family for about 90 years. And, as of next Tuesday, if all goes as planned, it will no lo... Sat, 28 Jul 2012 22:14:58 EST Try a new recipe challenge - Couscous & veggie saute So, I'm finally trying to get back in cooking mode and started out with what turns out to be a tasty and easy recipe to do -- Couscous and Summer Veggie Saute from the My Recipes website,

mmer-vegetable-saut-10000001087044/
(found via Pinterest).

I'll admit, my past experience with couscous is from a box. This was better. I've also not done a lot with zucchini, but found the shredding part easy and I do like it in the cousc... Sun, 8 Jul 2012 12:48:23 EST On a positive note...
I hope my US friends are enjoying the 4th of July. Again, I want to thank everyone for all of their kind words and support. It got to me thinking that it can't all be negative... and it's not. I'm enjoying having my own washer and dryer. I'm liking that my laundry hamper is in my bathroom (1st time ever). I'm liking the extra drawer space in the kitchen. I have a lovely balcony with a tree right outside. So far, t... Wed, 4 Jul 2012 15:19:23 EST Muddling through.... First, thanks to everyone for their kind words of support.

Well, it's been a little over a month with the new job. The more I learn about this organization as a whole, the more I know this is not an organization I want to work for long term. So, I'm coming up with a game plan and hope to be outta here after a year or so. Until then, I still don't really care for the city, but I can manage until I can come up with a better place to live. For me, anyway. The city itself isn't ... Sat, 9 Jun 2012 21:24:44 EST A short rant & update on my car... Today was a fairly good day. I was able to successfully test drive where I'm going on Monday. I did learn today after looking at the new employer's portal that they do not give Memorial Day as a holiday. This bugs me on so many levels. I had asked about holidays when I interviewed and was told they gave "Federal" holidays. Memorial Day honors our veterans and to not acknowledge that holiday, well, let's just say several years ago it was one of the reasons I didn't accept a position that ... Sat, 5 May 2012 19:39:55 EST So, the Move.... It has been almost two weeks now since I moved to my new city in Georgia. It has not been an easy move. Big lesson learned - House Hunt! If I had, I probably wouldn't have moved.

I moved into my apartment a week ago this past Friday. It wasn't easy to find an apartment with a days notice and this one does not feel like my home. I have never felt this disconnected with any place that I have lived in. It's a nice apartment yet I simply don't like it. I don't really "match" my... Sun, 29 Apr 2012 19:19:06 EST Craziness... Well, it's almost "M" day. The movers come Monday to pack and I wouldn't be surprised if some or all of the loading was also done.

I've spent the past week clearing out stuff and freecyling a lot. My last day at work was literally the last day of the week. The conference in Austin was a ton of fun (with many vegetarian restaurants and just plain good food). However, I flew through Dallas and got a "bonus" day in Austin due to the tornados that hit there. I was all in a tizzy... Sat, 14 Apr 2012 22:06:52 EST Looks like I'm moving... It's been a crazy couple of weeks, but the end result was that last Tuesday I was officially offered the job and I officially accepted it on Wednesday. So, I'm moving to Georgia! A return to the South. The offer came in a little higher than I expected and it also includes relocation, which I hadn't dared to even consider. My past couple of job moves have been at my expense. Naturally, there's an agreement to sign, but I'm cool with that cause it will make moving so much easier.
<... Mon, 5 Mar 2012 18:38:08 EST The interview... The flights were good. I actually enjoy flying at night as I like seeing the cities all lit up, it's just not ideal when one is interviewing the next day. However, they were on time and on the way there, the added blessing was that I did not have to change terminals in Atlanta (I hate those escalators). Unfortunately, I wasn't able to sleep on any of the flights, which I normally can do, so I didn't get any extra sleep while in the air.

The "hotel" was actually more like a B&B ... Mon, 20 Feb 2012 18:00:15 EST Surprised & a little frustrated... Nothing to do with weight loss, though it is something that's just driving me to distraction.

A couple of months ago I was approached by a recruiter for a job that I thought maybe I didn't quite meet what they were looking for as it is a management position. I talked to her anyway and was intrigued. From there we went to application to phone interview to Skype interview to an invitation to interview in person. This was last Friday.

The job is in a different city (s... Wed, 8 Feb 2012 21:12:26 EST Baking just makes everything better... So, I participate in a challenge to try 3 new recipes per month. My first one for this month was banana bread! Yum.

A couple of weeks ago, I ran across the Whole Wheat & Millet Banana Bread recipe,

and-millet-banana-bread/
on Joy the Baker's blog,
, and knew I had to try it. Maybe it was the pictures or that it used millet seed or maybe it was the fact that it makes two loaves (I'm good at... Mon, 6 Feb 2012 18:55:39 EST Past & Present... Happy New Year everyone! I sorta started the New Year with a walk down memory lane. I've been meaning for a while now to stop by the Goodwill store and pick up a few extra teaspoons, for scooping wet cat food, and a few extra forks, for taking to work since I take my lunch pretty much every day. I've also realized that with cooking more, one uses more utensils. As a single woman, I don't run the dishwasher every day, so I figured some extras would be useful.

I mentioned this to my... Sun, 1 Jan 2012 18:58:03 EST Post surgery and the Holidays Tomorrow marks five weeks since my surgery. I am finally almost back to my old self. The biopsy (gallbladder surgery) came back chronic inflammation. So, while I doubt I'll ever be 100% sure about the surgery, with that and the fact that a lot of my problems are gone, I'm going with it was the right thing to do.

I talked with a lot of people who had this surgery. Some were fine after a few days and really didn't think much of it. One friend said minimum of two weeks. Others w... Mon, 19 Dec 2011 19:52:19 EST Soup I'm finally feeling almost like me again, after the surgery. I'm trying not to overdue, but a girl's gotta eat. I'd hoped to do this before the surgery, but now is just as good. Today, I made Split Pea-Sweet Potato Soup from a Whole Foods recipe,

0
.

I'm happy to say, I was very pleased with the results. I did halve the recipe and I used veggie stock in place of half of the water. It's one tasty soup and I'll make it ag... Sun, 27 Nov 2011 15:56:53 EST Happy Thanksgiving! This was a particularly good day for me - it was my second outing since the surgery. I ventured out to a local restaurant with a friend for Thanksgiving dinner. I'm the kind of person that expects everything right away. Healing from the surgery has been a little slower than I wanted and quite frankly, I think my expectations were set a little too high by the Doctor in regards to recovery. However, today I'm doing much better.

The restaurant this year was no buffet (last year's ... Thu, 24 Nov 2011 19:26:00 EST Gearing up for November... Well, I came really close to my 1000 exercise minutes for November but not quite. Not surprised as I had one or two bad days this past week, which meant light or no exercise. November will be worse. But, good.

I'm headed to a conference on Tuesday that I'm looking forward to. It's a really good one, but works you from morning to night. I'm not big on doing dinners, so I think I can keep my food under control, especially with the gallbladder issues. That's Tuesday through Satu... Sun, 30 Oct 2011 18:39:05 EST A different approach... So, while I had grand ideas about doing Power 90 to it's completion it simply lacked variety, which is a killer for me. The really big positive was that it got me back to strength training, which I really enjoyed and am enjoying. So, the new program for me is ChaLean Extreme -- another 90 day Beachbody program. I started it a week ago Saturday and am enjoying it. This is a weight lifting program. She aims for fatigue at 10-12 reps, which means I'm lifting heavier weights than I thought I... Tue, 4 Oct 2011 19:15:38 EST Streaking... Spark style Well, this week has ended well... I'm down almost three pounds! I'm giving credit to the weight training, which I've been aiming to do at least twice a week. I'm still doing the Power 90 and like that the sculpt (strength) does upper and lower body at the same time, so that gives me an opportunity to mix in my Ellen Barrett dvds (pilates, some dance, some yoga, some calisthenics), yoga and other cardio, such as Walk Away the Pounds, into the mix. I've also got a couple of other strength vi... Sun, 18 Sep 2011 16:22:37 EST Crazy couple of weeks... Well, it's been crazy these past couple of weeks - earthquakes and hurricanes, oh my. The earthquake was just strange. I think I was more stressed by the really stressed kitty than I was the earthquake. Then spent the rest of the week gearing up for Hurricane Irene, which did let her presence be known starting about mid-day that Saturday till early Sunday afternoon. I lost power about 7:30 on Sunday morning. I was lucky as I got it back early evening. A friend wasn't so lucky. She didn... Mon, 5 Sep 2011 15:19:05 EST I'm doing something wrong... First, thanks to everyone who commented on the blog post about my probable gallbladder problems. It's very much appreciated.

Almost a month ago, I set out to exercise more and track my food. The goal is to at least lose those pesky few pounds I'd gained over the past several months. I weighed this morning -- up .6 pounds. That might not sound like a lot, but it all adds up and trust me, it's adding up! Now, it's been three weeks since I last weighed and when that's the case ... Sun, 21 Aug 2011 19:04:29 EST Apparently, it's my gallbladder.... Well, I went to the doctor about my stomach issues, what I thought was most likely acid reflux. It's not. Apparently, it's my gallbladder. Several months ago, a back x-ray showed the possibility of a gallstone, but I thought it wasn't symptomatic. An ultrasound last week confirmed a lot of gallstones. The Doc said I was a breeding ground for them. While nothing is urgent at this time, apparently with the number of them, the chances of something getting blocked are fairly high. I've bee... Wed, 17 Aug 2011 20:22:25 EST Updates....exercise & Diet Coke reduction plan Things are going well both on the exercise and Diet Coke fronts.

First, the exercise. Today was Day 18 of Power 90. I had one week where I had 2 days off, but last week I made up for a missed day by combining the cardio with strength. It worked well for me. On most strength days, I try to do another form of cardio or yoga in addition to the Power 90. Sundays, though, I do the cardio and yoga because I have the time and I'm finding I'm really enjoying spending almost 80 minutes... Sun, 7 Aug 2011 18:47:23 EST Me and my Diet Coke.... Diet Coke is probably my favorite drink. I, at times, drink it like some drink iced tea. I've been getting the feeling for awhile now that it's time for me to cut back. I read all the articles and I know it's not good for me. I also know that I enjoy it with a good burger, pizza, and mexican food. I don't drink alcohol, so I'm not planning on totally giving up Diet Coke. I am planning to drastically reduce my intake and take it from something I drink almost by rote, like some people smo... Tue, 2 Aug 2011 20:51:44 EST Trying a different tact.... Well, my goal since May, maybe even April, has been to get more strength training and some type of routine going. It hasn't been happening. I have a couple of dvds that do good circuit training, but I'm sporadic at best. For some reason, I just can't get the routine established.

A friend had very good luck with Beachbody so I checked out their offerings. Price wise, I was surprised. Not as expensive as I thought it would be. P90X just kind of scares and really, right now prob... Sun, 24 Jul 2011 16:21:02 EST Vacation... of sorts... I got back last Wednesday night from my yearly jaunt to middle of nowhere Southern IL with my Mom. This trip was different. Her driving for about 10 hours from her house to there by herself bothers me, so this time I flew into my hometown and then we left from the airport to go to IL. About two days travel time. We stayed overnight in a lovely little hotel in Arkansas and arrived at our destination the following afternoon.

The town is a bedroom community and is exceedingly peac... Sat, 9 Jul 2011 16:14:15 EST Of being flaky and other things.... I have been wanting to blog since Memorial Day, but it seems like work got crazy and then other stuff and well, I guess that's life.

Among other things going on, one has thrown me for a loop. My back. I did something and it apparently affected the sciatic nerve somehow, because there are days sitting is something that's hard to do and then I think exercise will help and yeah, it doesn't, not really. So, I've been watching what I do, but that means that I'm not exercising like... Mon, 27 Jun 2011 18:43:56 EST The person I don't want to be... And, it's got nothing to do with weight. I'm slowly getting there. It has to do with being an "angry" person, which really isn't who I am. However, work has been getting to me lately as have some of the people I work with. Today a friend and co-worker gently told me that I seem angrier. It was something I had already realized. It's a place I don't want to go.

We have a new director coming in in August and a lot of decisions are being put on hold. The interim director wasn'... Thu, 12 May 2011 19:37:16 EST Pondering changes.... The last couple of weeks have been busy, but I have been getting to the gym and have sampled a variety of classes. Right now, it looks like the ones I'll be sticking with are step and yoga, both of which I'm very much enjoying. My weight loss is still really stalled. I realized that my strength training had pretty much flown out the window, so today, I started that back up. Between SP, some videos and (of all places), I'm trying to come up with a couple of routines to give me so... Sun, 8 May 2011 16:21:27 EST Trying to jumpstart.... Or to just get re-started. I've stalled on the weight loss. I play with a couple of pounds, but nothing is really happening. Plus, I get home from work and am just not in the mood to exercise, so I stall on the workout.

After the issue with the back, I decided I needed to something more active. So, I checked out the fitness center right up the street from my apartment. It's literally within walking distance (1.1 miles round trip to be exact, which is a nice bonus for added e... Sun, 17 Apr 2011 19:20:27 EST Yikes! Recently, I decided I needed to talk to a doctor about a couple of ongoing problems. One is with constant sinus problems - I'm stuffed up a lot and decided that taking decongestants on a routine basis is not what I want to do unless, of course, that's what I need to do. I also wanted to make sure I was managing the bursitis in my hip the way I should as it's been hanging on for a while and makes sleeping a fairly miserable experience at times.

First, I had to find a decent docto... Tue, 29 Mar 2011 17:58:06 EST DVD Review: The Pursuit of Happy Hips (All Downhill) This is my third yoga DVD from Eionn Finn, who is one of my favorite yoga instructors. This DVD contains 4 workouts ranging from 43 minutes to 79 minutes and varying in levels of intensity. This review is for All Downhill, which incorporates some sun salutations in addition to standing poses (side bend, triangle), balance poses (standing pigeon) and floor poses. This DVD does focus on opening the hips, which is what I need at times. The other two DVDs I have (Power Yoga for Happiness I and... Sat, 19 Mar 2011 17:34:16 EST DVD Review: 3 Mile Weight Loss Walk This was the first walking DVD I ever got and it’s still one of my favorites. Done in 2007, it will probably be timeless. As the title says, it’s a 3 mile walk, broken into three segments of about 15 minutes each. The last segment and part of the first segment us light weights. One to three pounds recommended.

What I like.
* She has several people doing the routine with her and they are not all skinny. They are average folk and include one guy.
* The second seg... Sun, 13 Mar 2011 19:59:38 EST Exercise.... My goals for exercise each month are 12 cardio workouts and 8 yoga workouts. Spark doesn't allow me to set goals by the month, so I translated this to 3 cardio workouts per week and 2 yoga sessions per week. Last month, even though it was a short month, I met the cardio goal (12/12), but fell short of the yoga goal (7/8).

Since I'm stalled right now on the weight loss and am not sure why, I invested in a new Heart Rate monitor - one with a chest strap. I went middle of the road ... Sun, 13 Mar 2011 19:51:55 EST Cooking for One.... It's been almost five months since I gave up frozen dinners and began cooking more. It's been a learning experience. I seemed to be a little off track, so a week ago, I joined the Spark Healthy Cooking Challenge team. So far, not much that I hadn't already learned, but it's always good to have the reminders and kind of start over.

This week though brings me to a pet peeve when it comes to cooking and singles. Batch cooking. Good in theory, but for a lot of single people, ugh... Mon, 21 Feb 2011 18:01:04 EST All is good... The eyes are basically good. There are two nodules on my left eye (the technical name is Salzmann's Nodular Degeneration, which is scarier than it sounds). Right now, one is not big at all. The other on is larger, but they are not affecting my vision. They would affect contact lens wear, but with the severe dryness, I'm not going there again. For now, they will just monitor them to make sure they don't get any bigger.

The big surprise, was yes, it is severe dry eye and proba... Sat, 12 Feb 2011 18:28:46 EST Not what I expected.... For several years, I've had dry eyes. Probably over the past 6 months (give or take), it's gotten much worse. Burning, itching, for most of the time. Normal drops stopped really having any affect. So, when I got new glasses at the end of last year (I get a pair a year with my vision plan) I talked about it with the Optometrist. He recommended a different OTC eye drop to try for a month and then return and see how it was doing. I'm trying to avoid Restasis, but I've reached the point whe... Sat, 29 Jan 2011 19:54:19 EST Milestone... of sorts About a week or so ago, I made tuna cakes. I'd had tuna in mind and decided to make the cakes. Pleasant surprise was that they left overed very well and made for a good lunch. I got four cakes out of what I made and that wasn't too much to get tired over, especially since I don't mind the same lunch for a few days in a row.

I also tried making macaroni and cheese last week. Less successful and too much. Maybe I'll poke around SP for a better recipe. Maybe not. I've lost co... Sat, 22 Jan 2011 16:54:53 EST Welcome 2011 As many have read, I had problems flying out on Christmas Day as planned due to Delta canceling over 500 flights due to expected weather. For whatever reason, I waited until Christmas Day to see how the weather here would do and I slept in. What I realized when I woke up is that Delta could have made their morning flights (and it appeared that my flight out of Atlanta that morning was on time, which just made me cranky). Realizing that I ran a very big risk of not flying out the next day, I c... Sat, 1 Jan 2011 16:28:28 EST
