Thu, 7 Oct 2010 11:04:36 EST Walk Your Way Out of the Hospital Well, it's been a stressful week and I'm glad it's over. DH was hospitalized on Tuesday with extremely painful pancreatitis. I think I nearly killed him with the high fat Atkins diet. It probably wasn't a good choice for someone who doesn't have a gallbladder.

On the other hand, I'd like to credit his rapid recovery at least in part to the Wii I insisted on buying last year. It turned the couch potato into an exercise fiend.

By Thursday morning he was able to sit u... Sun, 28 Mar 2010 01:25:19 EST Senseless Tragedy My son-in-law's brother died Tuesday night by asphyxiation during a seizure. He was unemployed and had no medical insurance, so his sister did not take him to the ER. If he'd had medical treatment, he most likely would not have died. It makes me wonder, how many people die each day in this country because they have no medical coverage?

For the first time in my life, I'm facing the prospect of not having health insurance. My COBRA runs out at the end of the month, and due to pr... Wed, 3 Feb 2010 22:46:17 EST 1/23/10 Our grandson stayed up until 2:30 am this morning! He loved watching his grandfather dance to the Boogie game on the Wii. So I got up rather bleary-eyed this morning. I made whole grain pancakes and grandson devoured them to my surprise. After breakfast we played with trains, went for a short walk and then had a quick lunch before he collapsed for a 3 hour nap. Then it was time to say goodbye. We pretty much vegged out for a while and watched a movie. I see why Bangkok Dangerous only ... Sun, 24 Jan 2010 01:54:09 EST 1/22/10 What a day! Stayed up late last night and had to get up early to pick up our grandson. Took him to his first toy store and he loved Grand Rabbit. I had to bribe him with trucks to get him out of the store after an hour. We had brunch and went for an hour walk on a nature trail. There were many photo ops, but I forgot my camera! At least I got my cardio for the day.

After we got home, he slept for 2.5 hours, so now it's 11:30 pm, he's wide awake and I'm fading fast. I picke... Sat, 23 Jan 2010 01:34:58 EST 1/21/10 I looked ahead to see what the challenge is for tomorrow and it's do a fun and active Friday night activity. Our two year old grandson is coming in the morning and will be spending the night. By evening, I'm going to be dead on my feet and working on settling him down for the night! He's too young for bowling and the other more active Wii games. Sure wish I had a dance game, because he loves to dance. For my 30 minutes of cardio tomorrow, if the weather holds, we could walk to the local ... Fri, 22 Jan 2010 01:33:06 EST 1/20/10 I'm blogging tonight to complete today's bootcamp challenge and to keep my resolution to blog daily during the bootcamp. I also did the video and rode my exercise bike for 50 minutes.

Compared to last year's bootcamp, I'm doing much better. My back still acts up, but I haven't had to skip a workout. I really appreciate the effort the coaches have put in to offer us these bootcamps. Thanks! Thu, 21 Jan 2010 01:47:34 EST 1/19/10 Missed blogging yesterday because I waited until the last minute and the website was having problems. So guess what, it's 11:53 pm and here I am again at the last minute.

So why do I find it so difficult to work out earlier in the day? Mornings are really tough because my back takes forever to wake up. By the time I get the breakfast dishes and laundry done, it's time for lunch. By then the back is fully awake, but have to run errands before the sun sets and things get icy. ... Wed, 20 Jan 2010 01:56:47 EST 1/17/10 Starting week 3 of the bootcamp challenge and feel like I'm burning out! This was definitely a needed rest day. I cooked a meatloaf to eat in the coming week and barbecued an extra meal of chicken to satisfy today's challenge. Yesterday I cooked up a chuck steak in the crockpot and shredded it for even more meals this week. All I'll have to do is make some salads and cook a few veggies.

Completed today's video and didn't do anything else except cook and watch football games. Mon, 18 Jan 2010 01:34:35 EST 1/16/10 Went for a short walk for today's challenge. Then Wii bowled to warm up for circuit training. Focused on upper body since the bootcamp video covered core. By the time I finished, my knees were burning. I was able to complete the video though. Tomorrow will definitely be a rest day! Sun, 17 Jan 2010 01:46:57 EST 1/15/10 Tired today. So took it easy and spent 20 minutes free stepping on the Wii and then 15 minutes bowling to warm up for the bootcamp video. Did that and hopefully will complete the challenge with a good night's sleep. Sat, 16 Jan 2010 01:29:16 EST 1/14/10 Our sick DGS is no longer sick. It seemed like he had to make up for lost time today. We spent 30 minutes chasing a very fascinating trash truck with an articulated arm. We might have actually caught up to it, but each time it stopped to pick up a trash bin, we did too, so that he could stare in amazement. The things that impress a 2 year old! Then we had fun tossing foam balls at each other.

For something new, I tried out EA Active Sports for the Wii for 14 minutes. That pre... Fri, 15 Jan 2010 01:45:10 EST 1/13/10 DGS has strep so spent the day with us and will tomorrow as well. Poor little guy only drank apple juice all day and between the doctor's office and the pharmacy, he didn't get the antibiotics until 3:45 this afternoon. He was diagnosed at 9:30 am.

After he left, I did the bootcamp video and then worked out on the Wii. Got my fiber in, but with Atkins bars. I don't think that was what Coach Denise had in mind, but spending time with DGS was more important. We read lots of book... Wed, 13 Jan 2010 23:22:19 EST 1/12/10 Beautiful weather here in Colorado today. My knees kept me from getting out for a walk so I was glad to see an upper body workout in the bootcamp video. I did the video, the challenge and did 31 minutes of circuit training all while watching the horrendous devastation in Haiti on CNN. It leaves me speechless. Not a good way to end the day. My heart goes out to the people of Haiti tonight. Wed, 13 Jan 2010 00:54:11 EST 1/11/10 I can barely keep my eyes open tonight. Walked almost 4 miles today, cooked dinner, warmed up on the Wii for 10 minutes, did the bootcamp video and then the challenge. My legs feel like jelly and I'm heading off to get horizontal! Temps are supposed to be the 50's tomorrow! WooHoo! Tue, 12 Jan 2010 01:02:30 EST 1/10/10 Sunday and the start of a new week and week 2 of the bootcamp challenge. How did Coach Denise know that my kitchen table has been buried since Halloween and we've been eating in front of the tv? Well, it felt like a novel experience eating at the table and chatting tonight. Not sure if it will become a habit, but will work on it.

So completed the challenge, the video and took a 60 minute walk. Also found some new ab muscles that I didn't know I had, thanks to Coach Nichole's ab... Mon, 11 Jan 2010 01:14:43 EST 1/09/10 I'm amazed at the number of people who are joining Spark People. It's a flood and it's great!!! Now on to today's accomplishments. Completed the first week of bootcamp and I'm still walking, which means I'm in much better shape than I was last year at this time. Also managed a 30 minute walk, but did I do it while the temps were still in the 40's? No, I had to risk life and limb on the icy sidewalks as the sun was setting. Also did 16 minutes on the Wii and 16 minutes of circuit trainin... Sun, 10 Jan 2010 00:20:28 EST 1/08/10 Another cold and stressful day. Had a technical phone interview that I stressed about all morning, then it got moved out another hour. Afterward, I took out my frustrations on the Wii for 55 minutes and then did the bootcamp video. Also skipped a third cup of tea that might have made me sharper for the interview. So, I'm on track to finish out this week's bootcamp challenge successfully and we might make it into the 40's tomorrow! Sat, 9 Jan 2010 01:13:38 EST 1/07/10 Busy day. Started with a weigh-in at 138.4, so now 1.5 pounds to go to get back to where I was before the holidays. Boy, was it cold today! Went and took the Census test today and only got one wrong. With my 10 point veteran preference, I hope I did well enough to get hired.

Then I got home and shoveled snow for 12 minutes. It was too cold to be out for long, so I just did the sidewalk. Next, I did the bootcamp video, then 25 minutes of circuit training and finished up with t... Thu, 7 Jan 2010 22:51:28 EST 1/06/10 A cold and snowy day here and I was ravenous all day, craving comfort food. I finally caved at lunch and ate half a low carb bagel with cream cheese. Got my 3 veggies in with pork tenderloin fajitias for dinner, then pedaled the recumbent bike for 35 minutes and completed the bootcamp video. Couldn't hold the planks long enough, but I'd done planks yesterday and my back was sore along with my arms. It was an ok day and I'm tired. Tomorrow I have an interview, so should be a stressful day... Thu, 7 Jan 2010 00:53:37 EST 1/05/10 Day 3 of bootcamp and I warmed up with 56 minutes on the Wii Fit Plus before doing the boot camp video. After dinner did the pushup challenge and then some strength training. I started the day with a weight check - 139.4. Cutting carbs definitely got rid of a couple of pounds of water weight.

On the negative side, SIL got laid off today. DD is now the only one in the family with a job. Wed, 6 Jan 2010 00:49:39 EST 1/04/10 Started the day with a weigh in. I gained 4 pounds over the holidays. Before Sp, that would have put me over the edge and I'd have given up for months. This year I was really stressed out, so I gave myself permission to take a two week vacation. Perhaps not the best choice, but it worked for me. 2010 has started and I feel great. I'm energized and raring to go. For day 2 of bootcamp I completed the video and the challenge. Also did some kickboxing, but again, did not do as much exerci... Tue, 5 Jan 2010 00:49:42 EST 01/03/10 Day 1 of bootcamp and here I am posting a blog. That's one of my goals for the month, to blog daily on my fitness results. Today I did the cardio video and modified it to be low impact. Then I walked to Walgreens to pick up a prescription instead of getting in the car. It was snowing a bit, but that didn't stop me. I wanted to use the Wii Fit, but football games took precedence. Hopefully tomorrow will be a more productive day. Mon, 4 Jan 2010 00:06:44 EST I have a muscle! I flexed my arm and lo and behold, there's a muscle there! I also noticed that the underside isn't flapping in the breeze anymore. WooHoo! Strength training ROCKS!!! Fri, 11 Dec 2009 19:44:39 EST 11/30/09 Wow, what a way to end the month. I've been running a low grade fever for 8 straight days. Sure hope this ends soon. I lost a pound this month. That's 4 sticks of butter that I don't have to stuff in my jeans! Actually my jeans are getting pretty baggy and I have only one hole left in my favorite belt. I can't wait to shake this virus and get back to exercising. Mon, 30 Nov 2009 23:50:32 EST 11/22/09 Yesterday was our Thanksgiving and it was a perfect day. I got all of my food cooked for the party and still managed to do 20 minutes on the Nordic track and 30 minutes of strength training. We were an hour late, but everyone else was later! DH made sure that I didn't forget the pies this year. So we had a fantastic array of delicious food, excellent wine and outstanding friends and family.

I didn't quite stay on plan carb-wise, but stayed in my calorie range and for the first ... Sun, 22 Nov 2009 19:41:45 EST 11/19/09 It was a beautiful day here in Colorado. The sun was shining brightly and it was on the cool side. My husband and grandson are both doing better too. I got out for a walk. It was just too nice to stay inside. Then I had a good strength training session. If I can get all of my cooking done for Saturday's party tomorrow, then I'll have time to strength train on Saturday before the party. It's been months since I've strength trained 3 times in one week. It would also be a first for me to... Fri, 20 Nov 2009 00:01:38 EST 11/18/09 Busy day today. Grandson was too sick to go to daycare and husband still down with a virus. Played with my grandson all day and didn't get to work out until late tonight again. Watched Biggest Loser and rode my exercise bike for 45 minutes. For some reason, I didn't have the energy to ride for a full hour. Hopefully tomorrow will be a more normal day. Thu, 19 Nov 2009 01:39:50 EST 11/17/09 Wow, I can barely keep my eyes open. Had a very busy day and finished it off by spending 20 minutes on the Nordic track. Stretched out and now I'm off to bed!!! Wed, 18 Nov 2009 01:23:23 EST 11/16/09 WooHoo! Back is much improved. Rode my exercise bike for 35 minutes and did 30 minutes of circuit training. It feels great to be able to exercise again and my back feels even better than it did this morning. I hope this is the start of a good week! Tue, 17 Nov 2009 01:13:33 EST 11/15/09 Still resting back and taking lots of ibuprofen. We only got about 6" of snow and it melted on the streets and sidewalk so I didn't have to shovel. Tomorrow should be even warmer, so must get out for a walk. Loaded the dishwasher tonight and that was about all my back could tolerate, so I skipped the bike ride. I'm getting very impatient to get back to exercising. Happy Monday everyone. Let's make it a good one. Mon, 16 Nov 2009 00:28:04 EST 11/14/09 It's snowing. At least I got in a 3 mile walk before the weather got bad. Unfortunately my back is still a problem, so I'll just have to keep walking for now. That and taking lots of ibuprofen. DH installed a new heater in the hot tub, but it's still not working. Looks like the wiring from the house to the tub is bad. If it weren't for bad luck, we'd have no luck at all! LOL!!! Sat, 14 Nov 2009 22:25:35 EST 11/13/09 I survived Friday the 13th. Historically Friday the 13th is a really bad day for me. Today I only popped my back out, and not enough to land me in bed. I made it a rest day to avoid further damage to the back. Very annoying though, because it's throwing off my exercise schedule. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day!!! Sat, 14 Nov 2009 01:55:12 EST 11/11/09 What a day. Stepped up into my truck this morning and felt like I got stabbed in the butt, left side fortunately, so was able to accelerate and brake with my right. Had to drive the 1 ton dualie all day because my car has a clutch. Went with DGS to the pediatrician, where he got H1N1 mist and a flu shot. Poor little guy was feeling pretty miserable for a while. I then made a 40 mile wasted trip to the gyn. Wrong day! Went to Applebee's for the free Veteran's meal and my sister-in-law'... Thu, 12 Nov 2009 02:07:35 EST 11/10/09 Another day, some good, some bad. 20 minutes of Biggest Loser on Wii, 20 minutes of circuit training and 30 minutes on the exercise bike. There were negatives though. Planned to keep calories around 1132, but hit 1214. Worse, sodium was at 2,012. It would help if I took the time to plan out my meals in advance. So why don't I do that? Probably because I'm home all the time, so I'm not under pressure to plan. Right now getting more consistent with fitness is a higher priority.
... Wed, 11 Nov 2009 00:15:22 EST 11/9/09 Pretty good day today. Did two 25 minute sessions with Biggest Loser on the Wii. Stayed in calorie range, 9 glasses of water, but only got 8,000 steps. Pulled an ab muscle, so skipped strength training tonight. Hot tub heater arrived today, so hopefully will have a working hot tub by the weekend. Tue, 10 Nov 2009 00:02:43 EST 1 year anniversary It's been a year and I'm still here. Didn't come close to meeting my weight loss goal, only lost 10 pounds. So why am I still here? I'm a failure. At least that's what I would have thought before I joined Spark People. Now I focus on taking each day as it comes. If I have a bad week, I don't start over. I continue on with a new lesson learned.

I have achieved some of my goals this year. I now drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, I walk further than I ever thought I wo... Fri, 23 Oct 2009 01:53:52 EST The Huddle Wall I just realized today that the Huddle Wall is more closely linked to how I feel than I realized. Sometimes is seems like a chore to get 5 points, sometimes it's a way to check on friends and then for a while, most of my comments were Make It Happen. This week it's WooHoo! What changed? I hurt my back and gained back most of the weight I lost while taking 3200 mg of ibuprofen a day for months. I never stopped logging on even though I was becoming very discouraged. And I kept adding Make ... Wed, 29 Jul 2009 21:21:56 EST Happy Earth Day! Beautiful weather for Earth Day. Walked to the pharmacy to save a car trip and didn't eat any meat today. I also didn't get enough protein today, so a vegetarian lifestyle would require a lot more work on my part. I'm just not ready for any more change in my life, but it is something to strive for.

Currently watching Jacques Cousteau on Oprah and he says whales are getting breast cancer now due to all of the contaminants in the ocean. There is a huge floating garbage pile twice... Thu, 23 Apr 2009 01:04:03 EST Over medicated Got sick and felt awful for about a week. But then I just couldn't seem to get my energy back and I craved chocolate. I wasn't depressed, just lethargic. Finally I decided to cut back on Lexapro, an antidepressant. Wow, what a difference. I have energy again. Prescription drugs can be a double edged sword. As I improve my health, my goal is to eliminate as many as possible. Wish me luck! Sat, 4 Apr 2009 14:55:04 EST Bootcamp Progress I'm amazed that I've been able to do all of the bootcamp workouts without breaking anything. I'm incredibly stronger too. My doctor was very impressed when I saw him on Monday. He told me to keep up the good work and that's what I'm doing. You can bet I'll sign up for the next bootcamp! Thu, 22 Jan 2009 00:12:49 EST New You Bootcamp I currently weigh 144.4. My weight goal for the month is to lose 5 pounds to 139.4.

My fitness goal is to improve flexibility so that I can comfortably touch my toes.

A final personal goal is to develop an exercise plan that allows flexibility but also focuses on consistency.
