ACHICKPEA's SparkPeople Blog ACHICKPEA's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community again and again and again I'm still on my weight loss, getting fit journey. For the last two years I have divided my time between my house and my daughter's. I spend half of every week at my daughter's house watching my grandkids. I've tried to stay active (I've discovered the Eire Canal path and just love it for nice long walks) but haven't always succeeded. I also have far less control over the food available to me both at home and my daughter's. My other three children did the menu planning and shopping while while... Sat, 30 May 2015 06:28:54 EST Back So much has happened in the last month. A good friend passed away unexpectedly. Three of my children moved (and we helped each one with packing, moving and settling in). Two daughters and my son-in-law started new jobs. I finished up a ministry position I had been doing for three years. I started a new "job" watching my grandson three days a week. I spent almost two weeks with very little Internet access.

I've got an entirely new schedule. I am splitting my time between home and m... Sat, 10 Aug 2013 12:06:16 EST WOOT! I did it!

After the last fail on trying week seven c25k on my road, I went to the park to run again. It was my husband's day off and he gave me a lift there and back. I did the 25min run and went nearly 2.5 miles. It was hard (very) but I did it.

But he doesn't have another day off until Sunday, which is too late to wait to get my next run in. So I worked on figuring out a way to do it without the car.

Today I started at my house and began to walk west down m... Thu, 11 Jul 2013 09:11:23 EST Nope, I can't do that! I was away for the long weekend. We went up north to the Adirondacks to visit (I grew up there) but mostly to move my 21yo son into his summer dorm. He's doing a field school (archeological dig). We left him my car because the place he's staying is pretty far from both the dig and the nearest stores and so forth.

That means I'm without a car until early August. My husband's got a car but he drives it to work each day. I've been doing my run in the mornings at a local park. We live... Mon, 8 Jul 2013 10:19:26 EST I did it! Today was the last day of week six of c25k. warm up walk for 5 min and then run 22min. I set the timer as I began to run and then put the iPod in my pocket. I just focused on a steady pace. Just whenn I thought I couldn't continue, I was red faced and puffing hard, I pulled the iPod out and discovered I only has 43 seconds left of the 22min! I finished up those 43 seconds, walked for 5min to cool down and was done. It felt so much better than last time. I even tried to keep track of how far I... Wed, 3 Jul 2013 09:22:21 EST Hard! I got out for a run ( to use the term loosely) in a lull in the rain. It was Day two of week six of c25k. This is the last day there are intervals at all. Warm up, run 10 min. walk three min, run 10 min. From here on in no more walking breaks in the middle. We got a taste of that last week when day three was simply run 20 min!

It was so hard! I've been doing this with my daughter. She'd been staying here for most of June. But she's gone back to NJ to pack up her apartment. She has... Mon, 1 Jul 2013 11:37:49 EST Still here! It's been a whirlwind month or so. My daughter and grandson have been here most of the month of June. That's a joy, but having a one year old in the house is busy, busy, busy! My daughter is candidating at churches trying to find the church that God is calling here to pastor. That means weekend long interviews and writing interview and practicing interview sermons. Her husband has been mostly away for business so I've helped out all I can by watching the little guy (no hardship there!)
... Fri, 28 Jun 2013 06:14:22 EST Hike 5 I went on a hike with my kiddos today. All four of my kids and my grandson joined us on the first leg. We hiked up to see some huge old hemlock trees. Three of the kiddos and the grand baby then returned to the picnic area to hang out while my son and I went on a much longer and harder hike. It felt so good to be out in the woods on a beautiful day. We found a meadow full of wild strawberries and the creek was icy cold, but r... Thu, 20 Jun 2013 15:11:18 EST Hike 4 3 miles plus the 2 I walked/jogged today makes the total 49

On our trip to Mordor we've reached stock brook. This is where the hobbits were on day three in the morning. This is pretty soon after they look back and see a black rider on the hill crest where they had camped. Fri, 31 May 2013 16:39:59 EST OK so that didn't work My seventeen year old son (my younget kiddo) has expressed interest in running. He's pretty inactive in the cold weather. He's in front of his computer a lot. He does not work out. he has no interest in sports. he doesn't like to walk or hike with me (unlike his older brother). He does carpentry and does a lot of repairs around the house and has been helping the grandparents of a friend do home renovations. During the growing season he works on a farm 2-4 days a week. That's hard, physical l... Fri, 31 May 2013 10:25:11 EST Hike 3 Went for a nice hike with my son today. We spent a couple hours in the woods at one of our favorite local parks (salt springs in PA). We only walked about four miles (our pace is so much slower on trails instead of pavement) but it felt like a real hike this time instead of just a quick walk in the woods!

Total on our way to Mordor: 44 miles. Thu, 30 May 2013 16:10:16 EST Hike 2-mile 40 (goal update) Despite starting much earlier we just are not getting many hikes in. I think it has to do with my son's schedule, guests, and the weather. we did seize the opportunity today to get out into the woods. it rained early this morning and we are supposed to have possibly severe thunderstorms later today, but for the last hour or so it's been Ok. We only went a couple miles, but it was something! It's hot and muggy out. Yuck so it was slow going and felt harder than it should have!

So ... Wed, 29 May 2013 12:52:29 EST Family my youngest kiddo (17yo) bought a pair of running shoes. He wants to start running with me. So that means both my daughter and my son will be doing the c25k with me. my older son walks and hikes with me as often as we can manage. so if I can figure out something my oldest daughter would like to do I could have all four involved in being active with me.

Alas I'm afraid that there is little chance I'll get my bookish, grad student/writer out running or hiking. and the only sport she... Wed, 29 May 2013 09:08:08 EST ISO the perfect c25k playlist! I ran again today. I had done the three c25k days for the week but I wanted to go out again today so I did. it felt great.mI used a different podcast
wnloads/ I used the classic rock version. it was pretty good. There was nothing I hated. I've looked at the playlists for the next few weeks though and am pretty sure I won't like them as well. I think I may try to make mine own if I can figure out how to do it.

BTW I'm writing this while ... Tue, 28 May 2013 10:48:59 EST C25k I've been doing couch to 5k with my daughter. She has the app and I just follow her. But she went back to NJ for 5 days so I'm on my own until she comes back. I tried a couple year's ago to follow the plan with just a stopwatch, but it was awkward and I gave up on it. I don't have a smartphone so I can't get the app. I really wanted to stay on top of this so I found a couple podcasts with voice cues indicating when to run and when to walk. They work pretty well, but some of the music is drivi... Mon, 27 May 2013 12:26:24 EST Five pounds! I lost another couple pounds, bringing my total to five. It's slow but coming off.

My daughter and I plan to go out this morning and do day two C25K. Then I'm on my own for the week as she and her family will be back in NJ for a week. She will be back after a week and be here for the most part of June. Since she's trying to lose weight as well it's been nice having buddy.

Today is my youngest kiddo's 17 birthday. I'm going to try to avoid the cake! Sun, 26 May 2013 06:06:53 EST C25k Day one, week one. We left the baby with my son in law and my daughter and I went to the park and did the first of our couch to 5k. My daughter is overweight as well but 22 years younger. I was worried about keeping up. But it turned out we were well matched and kept each other going. It was cold, cold cold and windy out but the park was pretty empty so we didn't have to huff and puff in front of a large audience!

We can do this! Sat, 25 May 2013 10:36:16 EST BUSY! I was away last weekend. My daughter was graduating with her MDiv so the whole family went down to Princeton. My oldest met us there and it was busy, noisy and joyful! After graduation my daughter and my grandson as well as my oldest daughter came home with us. So I have all four of my kiddos home as well as my grand baby. My son in law has to work so he stayed in NJ but will visit for the long weekend. There will be nine folks here over the weekend! My daughters and grand baby will be here f... Fri, 24 May 2013 07:03:45 EST Hike My son is in the middle of frantically writing end of the semester papers and studying for finals, but he took time off today to go on a hike with me. It was sunny but a bit chilly and WET! but it was do nice to spend some time in the woods with my kiddo.

We only went about 3.5 miles ( he needed to get back to the books!) but it was a bit towards our goal of 50 hikes in the year and walking to Mordor!

Sun, 12 May 2013 14:22:13 EST Brighter I am fat. When I catch sight of myself in a mirror (which I avoid) I am shocked. None of my clothes fit. But I am starting to feel like myself again. Part of what happens to me is stress, but I think a large part is depression. Long, cold, dreary winters are hard on me.

With spring I start to come alive again. I was full of energy yesterday. I worked out and then hooped and then got on the exercise bike and did some more. I stuck to my calorie goal and it didn't seem too hard. I al... Fri, 10 May 2013 06:38:51 EST Flowers! The semester is winding up for three of my kiddos. One daughter graduates on the 18th. We will travel down to Princeton to see her receive her MDiv. My other daughter will meet us there and come home with us for a few months. The weather is warm and lovely. I put in a flower bed along the back steps and potted up flowers for the porch today. I can sit out on the porch and enjoy the weather.

I'm feeling hopeful and more cheerful than I've been in a while. Tue, 7 May 2013 14:45:07 EST Slow going I've been heavy almost all my life. Over and over again I lose weight, get trim, feel great and then put it all back on. I've been dieting since middle school. I always am too strict, eating the bare minimum and beat myself up if I eat too much or miss a day of exercise. I can get obsessive. When I was younger my diets were really borderline (if not full fledged) eating disorders. When I start to gain I give up everything and gain it all back in months.

this time I wanted it to b... Sun, 5 May 2013 06:56:38 EST Still here! Last weekend was as hard as I feared. I was a guest in a church member's home and then the church put out a HUGE potluck mid day meal for us. I tried to choose wisely but was unable to dodge the sweet little old ladies pushing far too large helpings on me. To top it off I was on the road at supper time and ate junk. Blah. . . .

But Monday I was back to logging and watching what I ate. I've managed to get at least some exercise every day and haven't been too bad as far as food. I'... Thu, 2 May 2013 15:36:19 EST Long week It has been a long week. I've been more or less successful in staying at least close to my calorie goal and got a bit of exercise most days, but I didn't do great. I couldn't log at my moms and I don't think the scales will show any good change this week.

My Mom's surgery went well. She coming home from the hospital and will stay with my brother for a while. I'm thankful it went as well as it did.

I'm on the road today and tomorrow. I travel quite a bit for my ministry w... Sat, 27 Apr 2013 07:24:15 EST Sunny but cold Sunday I got out for a walk yesterday. My oldest son is my usual walking companion, but he was away for the weekend (with my car) so I ended up going for a nice long walk with my husband. He had to pick up our fresh eggs from the farm and we stopped at the park on the way to walk. I'm up to thirteen miles. Still in the shire, not yet to the first night's camping spot.

The weather is lovely but cold. I'm ready for some nice warm spring days. We had three and then winter came back! I love... Mon, 22 Apr 2013 07:41:52 EST Sweater This weight has been gained quickly. Last summer I weighed what my goal weight is now. I've been this heavy before and I was almost this heavy several times in the last five years, but this last six months I have gained back 30 pounds that I had lost the winter before. That means not only do none of my clothes fit but the sweater I was knitting for myself is the wrong size. I have a lovely sweater on the needles right now. I started it for myself last fall. I chose a size that would fit me th... Sun, 21 Apr 2013 07:06:29 EST Hard couple days My mom is getting frailer. She has Alzheimer's and we all know that even with lots of support it's only a matter of time before she will need more care then she can get living alone. But during her last check up the Dr found something troubling . She was sent to an oncologist on Thursday. Evidently it's a very large mass. she goes for surgery on Wednesday. If all goes well and it is benign she will be in the hospital three days and then come here to recover. If it isn't benign we will need to... Sat, 20 Apr 2013 06:55:58 EST Homeschool's end On our long walk yesterday we talked about a lot of things, but mostly my youngest son's plans for next year. Like all his older sibs he's been homeschooled since kindergarten. He will be seventeen in a few weeks and is finishing up 11th grade. My 20 year old (who lives at home and commutes to a local university) started at the community college while in high school. He did his senior year of high school as a full time community college student. It gave him a head start and he's recommending ... Thu, 18 Apr 2013 07:05:26 EST Walking through Hobbiton It was a beautiful sunny day AND we had free time to enjoy it. I went on a nice walk with both of my sons. I have two kiddos still living at home, one 20 year old son and my youngest who is 17. My youngest doesn't usually join us when we walk so it was especially nice that he came along

We walked about 4 miles. That brings our total to nine. On our way to Mordor we haven't even left the shire yet! our first main goal is: BAG END TO RIVENDELL (458 miles). Frodo and company walked ... Wed, 17 Apr 2013 17:54:38 EST Hoop I am feeling really good about hooping. I am still pretty lame by most standards I think, but I've managed to get to the point I can keep the hoop up and going for 2-3 minutes at a time at least occasionally:) After less than 24 hours. Considering I am a 48 yo short, round person. I'm happy with this.

But more importantly I want to practice. I work from home as a reading tutor. My students all have lessons late afternoon and evening (they are in school all day!) So my mornings and... Tue, 16 Apr 2013 07:17:31 EST Fun! This time around I'm trying to emphasize getting exercIse in fun, playful ways. I love to walk especially with my kids, so I'm going to try to do more of that. I love to hike with my son so we plan on doing more of that. I like to swim. Last summer I bought a bathing suit and swam for the first time in years and it was wonderful. So I'll look for more opportunities for that.

I know someone who makes hula hoops. I just asked her to make one for me and I may have it as soon as this... Sun, 14 Apr 2013 07:48:08 EST Snacking I slipped up yesterday. I knew I was going to need to be on the road from late afternoon to eightish. I'd be driving through my normal supper time. I didn't want to be tempted to stop and grab something unhealthy on the road so I ate all my calories before I set out in hopes that I would be full and satisfied during the trip. The last hour and a half were torture as I almost stopped at every road side ice cream place, fast food place or grocery store I passed. I didn't stop. But by the time ... Sat, 13 Apr 2013 07:36:21 EST Weather! Spring was it seems only three days long here in upstate NY. The cold rainy weather has returned and according to the forecast this morning will remain all week. I am disappointed as my son and I had just resolved to get out for more walks and hikes. He could use the exercise as well. He's a college student and spends too much time at his desk with books and a computer. He does have some active hobbies though and trims down and tones up quickly once warm weather comes and he's outside more.... Fri, 12 Apr 2013 08:20:39 EST New goals For the past couple of years my son and I have set a goals for the number of hikes we will go on. Unfortunately we've done it both years in august when we had relatively few hiking days left (he's a college student so when he goes back to school in the fall we need to cut back our hiking by a lot). This year we set it today! Fifty hikes this year (now to April 2014). We've also set a walking goal. The hikes will count toward it but so will our frequent walks in the park. that goal is more am...
